RE: Unsubscribe by Scott Stroz

2005-03-11 Thread Rick Faircloth
 From Scott Stroz:

 UNSUBSCRIBE

Scott,

I know you're probably unsubscribing because of the incivility
shown on this list in the last couple of days...and it has been bad.

However, there is a lot to be gained from monitoring and participating
in this list. I would never have been able to get a business based on
web design that utilizing Cold Fusion without it. It's not always this
bad...usually, it's quite civil.

Now, to speak the CF-Talk family...forgive my forwardness in speaking
to the group like this, but this little family has begun to act like too
many
real families. Unable to carry on conversation without argument, sometimes
profanity, undue criticism, etc. Many real families fall apart when it gets
like this...the same is true for online families and I think, if my
instinct is correct,
that Scott Stroz may be the first victim of this CF family's misbehavior.

We need to temper criticism of other people and, especially, their websites
and products. Criticism can be constructive and given in that light is
usually welcome
by the producers. But the kind of criticism, even lately of free products,
has been
quite over-the-top. I think some of us need a vacation, or at least more
sleep and
less caffeine!

In groups like this one, it's easy for the inner circle to become very
familiar with
each other and, like in all personal relationships, get a little too relaxed
with what
we say. People who sign up for the form, because of their interest in Cold
Fusion
and need for help, will quickly abandon this list, not get the help they
need, and
perhaps abandon Cold Fusion, itself. This doesn't help any of us in the
long run
and especially the person in need in the short run.

Notice, I'm not using capital letters, so I'm not yelling at anyone...this
is just a call
of encouragement for all of us to be careful in our conduct and etiquette on
this list.
There are constantly new people checking out what's going on that we never
know
are watching. We need to show them this is a place of help and comradery,
not of
heated criticism, petty sniping, and destructive argument. People show up
here
in need of help...not just with the code, but with the difficulty of dealing
with the
situations they're in which drove here in the first place.

Personally, I'm tough enough to stick out the troubled moments we have here
to
get the benefits from this list. But for the sake of those who won't stick
around long
enough to see what a great resource this list is, I encourage everyone to
play nice...

Thanks for indulging my concerns...

Rick

2005-03-11 Thread Jared Rypka-Hauer - CMG, LLC
Thanks, Rick...

Good words... good thoughts.

I'm always for the idea of getting more sleep, but I'm not sure
anybody wants to see what I'm like on less caffeine. It gets ugly. I
do appreciate the honesty around here, and there's little of the
backbiting that happens in so many communities after they've matured
enough to have an inner circle or regs as other communities call
them.

I think, honestly, that some of the sharper comments I've made lately
may have been mitigated by getting more sleep... and if I've
contributed to the discomfort of others by making those statements...
well... I'd feel bad. It's often very hard to discern the fine line
between calling a spade a spade and being unduly harsh... perhaps I
crossed a line along the way. If so, my apologies to all offended.

Thanks again, Rick, for the reminder that there's always *people*
behind these black-on-white lines of text.

Laterz,
J

Scott,

I enjoy the humor, *some* of the drama, and good-natured ribbing,
but some of it, profanity, abusive trashing other's works and sites,
criticism of someone who lets the community know of *free* tools
they've created and are inviting people to use and getting verbally
abused for it...a lot of that stuff needs to go...

It's not good for the list.

Glad you're sticking around :o)

I'd be interested in knowing how many people sign up for the list
and how many people unsubscribe by the month...any chance
Michael might share numbers or just maybe some insight into
how what goes on here affects subscriptions?

each other and, like in all personal relationships, get a little too
relaxed
 with what
we say. People who sign up for the form, because of their interest in
Cold
 Fusion
and need for help, will quickly abandon this list, not get the help they
 need, and
perhaps abandon Cold Fusion, itself. This doesn't help any of us in the
 long run
and especially the person in need in the short run.

Notice, I'm not using capital letters, so I'm not yelling at anyone...this
 is just a call
of encouragement for all of us to be careful in our conduct and etiquette
on
 this list.
There are constantly new people checking out what's going on that we never
 know
are watching. We need to show them this is a place of help and comradery,
 not of
heated criticism, petty sniping, and destructive argument. People show up
 here
in need of help...not just with the code, but with the difficulty of
dealing
 with the
situations they're in which drove here in the first place.

Personally, I'm tough enough to stick out the troubled moments we have
here
 to
get the benefits from this list. But for the sake of those who won't
stick
 around long
enough to see what a great resource this list is, I encourage everyone to
 play nice...

 Thanks for indulging my concerns...

RE: Unsubscribe by Scott Stroz

2005-03-11 Thread Rick Faircloth
After a quite a few years of using software in various aspects of my
business... operating systems, video production software, database software,
and Cold Fusion, etc.,...I've learned that before I spend a penny on
software
I should find a place where the people that use that software gather to
discuss
it's use. I don't have to even participate to get an idea of the quality of
the
software and the community of users that I'll probably depend on to use it.

Based on the kind of comments, and potential assistance from lists like this
one,
I'll make a decision whether or not to invest in that software. With more
and more
companies becoming practically unapproachable for support without spending
lots
of dollars, it's important to know there are communities surrounding
products that
can help with issues that come up without entering a firestorm.

plug
I will put in a plug for one company, however...Linksys (Cisco)...I've used
their inexpensive
routers for several years now with good performance, but when I have a
problem,
I can call a free 800 number, and talk to technicians as long as I need to
and never
have to pay a dime. I'm not sure how they afford to offer that level of
support for free,
but I'll always be a customer because of it...
/plug

But, back to CF-Talk...this place has been like a gold mine for me...
and I want it to keep that polished sheen...

I think everyone is overreacting a little here... the list gets worked up
now and then but everything calms down in a couple hours or a couple days...
no big deal.

One other point.. A lot of potential employers have people on this list so
the more BS you partake in might come back to bite you in the ass if you

Personally, I'm tough enough to stick out the troubled moments we have here

 play nice...

RE: Unsubscribe by Scott Stroz

2005-03-11 Thread dave
It does get heated but thats also where a lot of the good info comes out that
otherwise wouldnt.

As far as employers and such, well I can see both sides of the argument but I
would want someone on my team that is a free thinker and not afraid to speak
his/her mind, it doesn't mean I have to always agree with them. After all most
businesses that do well are ones with at least a lil bit of friction in them,
it also pulls out more ideas, solutions.

If you think the friction here is bad, try working in an ER with ppl who
haven't slept in 3 days, this is nothing.

They probably will, when they're sure they won't be squashed
like a roach if they make an appearance and dare utter any
words which might draw the ire of some on this list...

I think everyone is overreacting a little here... the list gets worked up
now and then but everything calms down in a couple hours or a couple days...
no big deal.

One other point.. A lot of potential employers have people on this list so
the more BS you partake in might come back to bite you in the ass if you
find yourself looking for CF work and run into someone you didn't know on
here... but knows you! :-)

Basically, ask your question on one list.. Wait for a reply.. Then if
you do not get a reply, post it to another with the prefix that you
posted it to one list already with no response..

Nearly all of your posts has been requesting technical advice.

The CFTALK list is for technical advice, people sometimes occasionally
post a request for technical information on the CF-Community list, but
that isn't something that usual.

So you should stay connected to the CFTALK list, and NOT CF-Community..

You should read the bottom of every email that is posted for more
information on guidelines on what should be posted where, as well as
clear and concise information on how to subscribe and unsubscribe.

altered the link on bottom to go directly to the archives where the

The usual problem with people unsubscribing is that they are trying to
remove an address other than the one subscribed. When this doesn't work, I
get the emails directly. Then I just use the standard interface once they
give me the right one. :)

Re: Unsubscribe

2001-04-13 Thread David Hannum

Make sure that the email address you use to unsubscribe is the same as the
one you subscribed with. When most folks have trouble, it's when they've
changed email addresses since they subscribed last, and the system is
forwarding their old address. We had that problem here a lot when we went
to the new mail system. For example, my address went from
[EMAIL PROTECTED] to [EMAIL PROTECTED] But, the old address still
gets my mail to me.

I am totally fed up. If a list can't be responsibly managed, it should not
be published at all.

I have a large stack of reply emails saying it was successful but the
posting of this message is proof that it has **NOT** been successful.

I am hereby giving notice that I am tired of being polite. I will wait 48

Suffice it to say that threats against a community endeavor such as this
list are really frowned upon. Keep in mind that you may actually work with
or for someone on this list. It seems that in your frustration (which seems
warranted), you've hastily posted something that I would assume you don't
mean. Am I correct?

Have you tried contacting Michael Dinowitz directly? Are you sure that

RE: Unsubscribe

2000-06-30 Thread Dave Watts

I have logged over 37 emails trying to unsubscribe plus seven
trips to the web based administrator. What is uncivilized is
the total lack of response and uncivility from the list managers.

This is an unmoderated list, and there's only one list manager, who to the
best of my knowledge has a full-time job and runs this list as a service to
the community of CF programmers. There's not a whole lot he can do, unless
he learns the correct email address that was originally used to subscribe.
If you can look at the raw mail header of a message that you've received, it
should list the address to which the list sent the message.

Perhaps some of the responses you've received have annoyed you; I can
understand that. However, you have to understand their perspective. It's as
if you got on an airliner, realized after takeoff that you were on the wrong
one, and are now threatening to run up to the cabin and crash the plane.
Also, with a company name like "Internet Marketing Corporation", you should
expect that people might think you could be a spammer. It's not very
productive on your part to threaten to "implement large volume programmed
'posting" until [your] postings are no longer accepted", either.

My name is R. C. Horsch

Now what arer you going to do?

I'm going to advise you to try and figure out why you're unable to
unsubscribe. I know that the unsubscribe mechanism generally works, so it's
likely that there may be a problem on your end.

I suspect that you may have subscribed with an address other than
[EMAIL PROTECTED] Perhaps you used [EMAIL PROTECTED], since that's the one listed
in this email. You may have used an address in ivq.com, since mail for that
domain also goes to your mail server, and you're the owner of that domain.
Or, perhaps, you registered with an email address in art21.com; that's also
yours and also uses the same mail server.

Or, it could be an email account at museumofsex.net - that's yours too. Oh,
wait; there's no mail server record for that one. How about mosex.com. That
one's still active. It does point to a different mail server, but that mail
server could simply be forwarding to your regular mail account. Nice site,
by the way - like the restrained use of Flash, and the site itself looks
pretty interesting. Any site that can enlist Sandra Bernhard, Arianna
Huffington and Annie Sprinkle must have something going on.

I'm tired, so I'll just list some of the other possibilities:

shellymars.com
sexphanatic.com
erotogram.com
mosex.org
mosex.net

I'd focus on the ones using the mail server hosted by netaxs.com first -
that's your best bet. Finally, you have at least three NIC handles. That's
kind of overkill, don't you think?

I hope you find this helpful.

Re: Unsubscribe

2000-06-30 Thread allred

Mr. Horsch,

I apologize that things have apparently gotten out of hand. There's nothing
that most lists like better than to get hold of a spammer, although I'm not
convinced that that's what you have been. I can appreciate your difficulty
in unsubscribing. Many list members had difficulty during the early part of
this month. I have two suggestions:

1) issue the unsubscribe command using all email clients that you use. The
signup is tied to one email address, and if you don't issue commands from
that address, you'll get multiple automated messages back from the list,
but you won't get unsubscribed.

2) failing that, you could set up a mail filter to delete all incoming
messages from the list and just forget about it.

RE: Unsubscribe

2000-06-30 Thread Marcus

I suspect that you may have subscribed with an address other than
[EMAIL PROTECTED] Perhaps you used [EMAIL PROTECTED], since that's the
 one listed
in this email. You may have used an address in ivq.com, since
 mail for that
domain also goes to your mail server, and you're the owner of that domain.
 Or, perhaps, you registered with an email address in art21.com;
 that's also
yours and also uses the same mail server.

Or, it could be an email account at museumofsex.net - that's
 yours too. Oh,
wait; there's no mail server record for that one. How about
 mosex.com. That
one's still active. It does point to a different mail server, but
 that mail
server could simply be forwarding to your regular mail account. Nice site,
by the way - like the restrained use of Flash, and the site itself looks
pretty interesting.

2000-06-30 Thread Michael Dinowitz

Let me try this again. I've gone through the entire list of subscriber
(1700+) by hand and looked for ANYONE with ANY address that even looks
remotely like IVH.COM or IVQ.COM. There is nothing. What this means is that
you are on this list using an alias (i.e. a different email address than
what we see). If I don't know this address, I can't unsubscribe you. If you
want off of the list, then you should try and remember how you got on.
This is my last word on the subject and would like the topic dropped. Thank
you.

 Dear5 David...

I have exercised extreme dilligence in attempting to unsubscribe.

I am totally fed up. If a list can't be responsibly managed, it should not
 be published at all.

From my point of view, you have been flaming ME with several hundred
messages per day, day in and day out, week in and week out.

Think twice about your remark about "having my email address" --that's a
 really mature remark, too.

Oh, are you saying that [EMAIL PROTECTED] is NOT your email address (along with
any of the others in the header?) Well, therein lies your problem, not the
"list manager". You've got other problems! And remember, you're the one
who's been using vulgar language and making threats! This is one of the
very best lists on the web. Well behaved and well managed (considering the
number of hack attacks they suffer constantly). Chill out and let the guys
that know HELP you figure it out. You're not being SPAMMED or FLAMED

RE: Unsubscribe

2000-06-30 Thread Hoffman, Joe (CIT)

I know how you feel ... to paraphrase Leslie Neilson:
"Nothing frosts my butt like getting lots of email you don't want
and a snow cone three feet high"

Like I said in an earlier post

Veronica was the one signing her name to previous posts to the list
... have you talked to her to see what email address she used to
subscribed to the list?

The list manager certainly does NOT want to send you email if you
don't want it.

Please view the message header of any typical piece of email from
the list. Copy and paste it into an email to me ... I will be glad
to forward it on the list manager( [EMAIL PROTECTED] ) for you.

If you do not know how to view the message header, please tell us
on the list which email client you are using (Eudora, Outlook
Express v5, Outlook 2000) and we will be glad to help you with
detailed instructions to show you how.

This is a sincere request to help and I would expect a reply if your
intentions are to actually unsubscribe. Thanks.

2000-06-30 Thread paul smith

I ran across this little factoid in my email
accounts on my own Post.Office mail server.

Regardless of what I tell Eudora my return
email address is, some list servers won't allow
me to post to the list unless I subscribe
the "Primary E-Mail Address" as defined in the
Post.Office account setup.

I don't know if this is causing your problem,
but you might look and see what your "Primary E-Mail
Address" is for the account with an alias
[EMAIL PROTECTED] (if indeed this is an alias)

I used to blame Eudora. It only took me a few
years to kick over this rock... ;-)

you are on this list using an alias (i.e. a different email address than
what we see). If I don't know this address, I can't unsubscribe you. If
you
want off of the list, then you should try and remember how you got on.
This is my last word on the subject and would like the topic dropped.
Thank

  Dear5 David...

I have exercised extreme dilligence in attempting to unsubscribe.

I am totally fed up. If a list can't be responsibly managed, it should

Think twice about your remark about "having my email address" --that's a

Re: Unsubscribe

2000-06-30 Thread Jennifer

The list manager has responded and he let you know that the address that
you are trying to use to unsubscribe is not subscribed. Until you come up
with a subscribed address you can't be unsubscribed. He said this yesterday
after he came back into the country from teaching classes. As for your next
message, this is not spam because you (or someone at an equivalent address)
signed up for it. Spam is email that you didn't ask to receive and you
asked to receive this. There have been some problems with the unsubscribe
functions, but I have used them twice in the last month and they do work,
assuming that you have used them correctly. But instead of trying to
contact the list manager through the information on the website that
contains the unsubscribe function, you sent a threatening letter to people
who have no control over your subscription to the list. That is extremely
unprofessional, and considering the nature of this list, extremely
dangerous. There are people on this list who could easily take down your
website or hijack you email. Yes, that is illegal, but you may have already
noticed that not many people have been arrested for this recently in spite
of several high-profile cases pending. That's because it's easy for people
to cover their tracks if they know what they are doing. I suggest that the
next time you have a problem like this you handle it more appropriately.

At 02:40 AM 6/30/00 -0400, you wrote:

and uncivility from the list managers.

Are you sure that
you're putting in the right email address in the unsubscribe dialog box?

Dude,

You need to take a chill pill or something. Obviously you're not interested in
discussing ColdFusion related topics and frankly if you were I don't think anyone
would answer your questions after you threatened all of us for the past 2 days.

If you haven't got a clue what e-mail address you used to subscribe, then it's going
to be really tough to get you off this list.

Perhaps the list owner can send out subscription verifications to everyone so that way
the people who don't respond (such as yourself if you should happen to get the

Anyway. Rather than threatening us, why don't you simply have your

about 2 minutes to set up, and it's not nearly as hazardous to your health!

Personally I love this list! Excellent advice and information mixed with an
element of entertainment (thanks to you)!

Last thing. You are one person. Don't you think that if you really
launched an some automatic script to do whatever that there aren't several
hundred people on this list capable of doing the same to you? Not a smart
move.

Try to learn from this and don't do this to the next time you want to
unsubscribe.

RE: Unsubscribe

2000-06-29 Thread Hoffman, Joe (CIT)

On 6/22 you asked how to unsubscribe but did it under the subject thread
of "RE: List of tables in Access 97" and surprisingly had one person post
a reply.

In the past, the person posting messages to the list included her name
at the bottom of her email ... if you are not Veronica ... have you ever
thought of asking her what email address she used to subscribe to the list?

Michael Dinowitz at [EMAIL PROTECTED] is the person you need to contact
with the correct subscribed email address.

In you email header I found ppp93.blackbox1-mfs.netaxs.com Who is that?

From an email analyzer tool:
-
imc001.ivq.com received this from someone claiming
  to be imc003
This doesn't match the IP address in the headers, so this
may be a relay point. If so all headers below are probably
  forged.
  It really came from ppp93.blackbox1-mfs.netaxs.com
-

I am hereby giving notice that I am tired of being polite. I will wait 48

Yes ... we have email addresses too like [EMAIL PROTECTED]

http://www.netaxs.com/netaxs/userguide/rules.html

Failure to abide by these rules may result in immediate termination of your
account without refund.

7. Harass users (on Net Access or elsewhere). Sending email or real-time
messages to a user who has asked explicitly and unambiguously that you not
do this is harassment. In some cases, a harassing user may be warned against
engaging in similar behavior with other users as well. Publishing someone's
real-world data (phone number, address, social security number, etc.) in a
newsgroup or on the web, etc. in such a way as to cause the person trouble
or to incite others to do so (even if you don't do it yourself) is also
forbidden. (Establishing that the information you published is available,
say, in a phone book somewhere does not constitute a defense of this kind of
harassment.)

8. Abuse the services of a remote server, or violate a remote system's terms
of service while connected to that service from your Net Access account.

9. Send unsolicited mass mailings or unsolicited subscriptions with a
"negative option" for continuation. (The negative option is one where you
invite people who do not wish to receive further mailings to reply to you.)

To whom it may concern:

I have been trying to unsubscribe from this list both through the URL and
the email interface for over six weeks now.

I have a large stack of reply emails saying it was successful but the
posting of this message is proof that it has **NOT** been successful.

I am hereby giving notice that I am tired of being polite. I will wait 48
hours and if I am still on the list I will implement large volume
programmed "posting" until my postings are no longer accepted.

I have really had quite enough.

To avoid being unprofessional/tacky, I won't make any comments.

Fortunately, I'm both. The idiot in question is a spammer looking for any
excuse to ply his spineless trade; I simply can't force myself to believe
that one person could *really* be that stupid and continue breathing without
mechanical assistance.

He's either a startup or simply not very good at what he does, as AltaVista
only located one other reference to ivh.com:

http://www.xrt.upenn.edu/training/PResidents.html

...and I'm sure that has nothing to do with our anonymous, unwilling guest.

Either way, killfiling him is the surest option; it's not as if we'll be
missing anything - aside from entertainment on par with the primate house at
the local zoo.

 Draw your own conclusion.

Why, that's the best example of a business card I've seen on the net so far.
:)

Threatening to spam 1 to 2 thousand web developers (some who are fairly far
up the food chain) definately isn't I think the best way to start out the
week. But that's just my opinion of all this. :)

There's some amazing dynamic coding done behind the scenes on that site, I
bet. It's the stuff that you DON'T see happening that's the real magic.

RE: Unsubscribe

Last thing. You are one person. Don't you think that if you really
launched an some automatic script to do whatever that there aren't several
hundred people on this list capable of doing the same to you? Not a smart
 move.

Hmmm, how many of us could send a blitz to an email address, and if needs
be, vary the email address, subject, content etc.?

Or, to not break the law g How about how many Black Lists he can get on by
Spamming?

Real smart move... and how long do you think it'd take before it makes his
email address look like ILOVEYOU was a single email if he annoys enough of
us?
