If the vin number has a letter in the middle it is U.S. built so it is doubtful we would have any info unless it was originally sold in Canada. If the vin has the number 1 it is usually a Canadian built car and we should have info on it. If we have no info then there is no charge.

Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List Hey Tom I will have to agree with everyone that either a 3.31 or 3.55 gear would be great. Right now you could do the gears and then do the trans down the road. Valid point was brought up, what series carrier do you have now? If you are going to get the 3.31's you better start looking now as noone makes them new, you gotta reuse a GM set. On the note of the 700. Mom's car has 3.55's and just loves to cruise with the torque of the big block. Although we were all set to put a 3.31 in it when we found out the housing was an early one. So were just gonna save it for the 65 and stick with the gears she has now. We can talk about this more at the next meeting if ya want... later JJ On Wed, 23 Jan 2002 [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List I need a consensus here. Re: [Chevelle-List] Build Sheet
if you read further the info sheet also states that GM Canada may have information on US built cars sold in Canada ie they have info on the COPO 427 Cameros that were built in Baltimore but sold in Canada. The whole point is that you can't go wrong phoning the toll free number cause they will not charge you if they have no info. I believe that GM Canada would have kept the records and spec sheets for some of the cars they imported up from the US for sale here , it then becomes a matter of which cars they kept records for...I mean you don't think that the US shipped cars here in the 60's without any sort of build sheet info , options etc going along with the car, and that GM Canada just put these cars on the lot without knowing anything about them do you? It juststands to reasonthat GM Canada kept documentation on the vehicles they shipped to dealers including some that were imported from the USbefore distribution to various Canadian dealerships. I don't know this for a fact but it seems reasonable givin that they kept records of cars they made here . Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List I've been pretty set on having the SS hood stripes painted on my '69 Elky while I'm having it painted now. My understanding at this point is that the Elky's did not come with the SS stripes on the hood and I guess this means they were not an option like they were on the Chevelles. This leads me to think of leaving them off, even though I'm not doing a stock color for the paint. I also wanted to do the lower side in a two tone color like you could get on the non SS cars. Because the SS cars didn't have the lower side body molding, I was thinking of doing the SS stripe on the side instead. Anyone have the dimensions for this? I bought the Photofacts El Camino book to help me research this but it turned out to be a waste of money, not telling me what options were available for individual years and instead showing me some bogus pictures of used (modified paint) El Caminos for the '69 year and not factory schemes or paint options. So now, I'm thinking of the SS stripe on the side and probably the Chevelle SS stripes on the BB hood, just because I think it shows off the form of the hood better. So, does anyone have the dimensions of the hood stripes for the '69 model. Also, does anyone have an example of the lower side two tone without the lower body side molding? I guess I could have a pinstripe border between the two colors. And I need to decide SOON. The shop wants to paint next week. Keep the TH-400 and get a 3.73 gear set. Why not do the four speed?. You could get your 400 rebuilt and shift kitted twice before you could pay for the 700granted the 700 is a very good tranny, but it may be more expensive in the long run if you race it much. I think it's best to be at or less than 3K when cruising the highways. The 3.42 10 bolt is what all the G-body guys strive for, but If I could change my 3.08 tomorrow, I'd go 3.73. I drive the freeways about 40 miles a day and cruising at 80 runs 3k on the tach. Mileage? Who cares, I didn't buy my car to get good mileage, that's what TowRopers are for:) Kelly C. [Chevelle-List] 350 SB
Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List I am planning on building the 350SB with some longer term plans. The First stage would be to rebuild the current 350 so that it has some oomph. I am debating on the stroker in the beginning, but would like to stroke it in stage 2. I have read a few articles that claim stroking the motor is relatively inexpensive, since you can reuse many of the parts (heads, intake, cam, etc). Stage 3 would be to add a 6-71 to the 383. How feasible is this versus rebuilding to buying a BB? I am looking at some BB prices and wonder which would be cheaper v. performance. Any help is greatly appreciated! Kevin _ Do You Yahoo!? RE: [Chevelle-List] Rear End Ratios
Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List I have a 2.73 rear behind my small block and 700R4, and I can tell I need more. I do get about 24 mpg cruising on the highway, but I have been planning to upgrade to a mid-3 series gear as well. 3.31 is a 20% increase for me and was likely what I was thinking of as this get very close to the optimal factor I have seen where they say divide 10 by first gear ratio and you have a good rear ratio (10/3.06=3.27). But with the large step between first (3.06) and second (1.63) on the 700R4, it might be better to go to the high end of the scale: 3.06*2.73= 8.35 3.06*3.31=10.13 3.06*3.55=10.86 3.06*3.73=11.41 3.06*4.11=12.58 Also, I assume I need a new carrier. I thought that the 12 bolt mid range carrier took 3.07 to 3.90 gears, but I have also seen it listed as 3.73 and below, and 3.73 and up, so there seems to be confusion out there... Re: [Chevelle-List] 350 SB
Pick up the new CHPdollar for dollar the SC 383 and BB are the same price and virtually the same performance numbersif it were my choice though, I'd go BB. Kelly C. Re: [Chevelle-List] Rear End Ratios
If you have that kind of money to throw around, why not just install a built 4L80? All it is is a HD TH400 w/OD. Cheaper, strong, and less hassle. If it was my car,I wouldn't even go that far. If the car already had a TH400 installed, just install a set of 3.55's or something close. Add a decent torque converter and you're ready to go. For a pure street car,the difference between a 4.10 cog and a 3.55 is negligible, anyway. A big block can easily pull a tall gear and 28" tall tire. Ring gear spacers? In this day and age,I would not even consider using one. No offense,Larry. the only reason mine whines so loudly is because I didn;t set it up. i bought the rear done and just put it in the car. i should have taken it apart and checked it, but i didn;t, so now i'm paying for it now. The guy that did the rear set it up half ass b/c it was to be put in a drag car. I tried to fix it by setting the pinion depth where it was supposed to be and it made it worse. i put a 3.42 posi in my 86 Cutlass and its quiet as can be. Tom

[Chevelle-List] No help
Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List No offense but looking over the last couple of days, the only question I saw was about 68 Chevelle paint around 9:00pm Monday night. At least that's the date/time stamp on the copy I received. Maybe nobody has a 68 that's been on in the last couple of days. BTW, four of your responses were with the subject of Barrett-Jackson and one was of those was off subject talking about aluminum LS6's or LS7's - and I believe that was answered by a number of folks. I don't know how long you've been on the list but I know Clint has been here for quite a while off and on and has given some expert advise and qualified opinions. I've seen numerous replies to Tom and from Tom to things he probably knows about. Larry has also been a frequent contributor here both asking and answering questions. In less than 5 minutes you come back with your own thought to the question being asked about rear end ratios and not really an answer but an opinion. Remember, the thread started about what gear everybody was running. Are you running a 5:13 and plan on doing any highway driving? I know your response was probably in fun but didn't answer the question but quite a few hundred subscribers saw it, or will see it when they log back in. Sometimes it just takes a while for people to get to know you and respond quickly. Hang in there and don't get frustrated, OK? If anybody knows or has an educated guess, they'll be along to help. Now, anybody know if the lower body color on a 68 Chevelle wraps into the door jam and if so, how far?
