With that motor a 3.31 700R4 will boil the tires off be great

Hey Tom
I will have to agree with everyone that either a 3.31 or 3.55 gear would
be great. Right now you could do the gears and then do the trans down the
road. Valid point was brought up, what series carrier do you have now? If
you are going to get the 3.31's you better start looking now as noone
makes them new, you gotta reuse a GM set.

On the note of the 700. Mom's car has 3.55's and just loves to cruise with
the torque of the big block. Although we were all set to put a 3.31 in it
when we found out the housing was an early one. So were just gonna save it
for the 65 and stick with the gears she has now.

We can talk about this more at the next meeting if ya want...

if you read further the info sheet also states that
GM Canada may have information on US built cars sold in Canada ie they
have info on the COPO 427 Cameros that were built in Baltimore but sold in
Canada.

The whole point is that you can't go wrong phoning
the toll free number cause they will not charge you if they have no
info.

I believe that GM Canada would have kept the
records and spec sheets for some of the cars they imported up from the US for
sale here , it then becomes a matter of which cars they kept records
for...I mean you don't think that the US shipped cars here in the 60's
without any sort of build sheet info , options etc going along with the car,
and that GM Canada just put these cars on the lot without knowing anything
about them do you?

It juststands to reasonthat GM Canada
kept documentation on the vehicles they shipped to dealers including some that
were imported from the USbefore distribution to various Canadian
dealerships. I don't know this for a fact but it seems reasonable givin that
they kept records of cars they made here .

I've been pretty set on having the SS hood stripes painted on my '69 Elky
while I'm having it painted now. My understanding at this point is that
the
Elky's did not come with the SS stripes on the hood and I guess this means
they were not an option like they were on the Chevelles. This leads me to
think of leaving them off, even though I'm not doing a stock color for the
paint. I also wanted to do the lower side in a two tone color like you
could
get on the non SS cars. Because the SS cars didn't have the lower side
body
molding, I was thinking of doing the SS stripe on the side instead. Anyone
 have the dimensions for this?
I bought the Photofacts El Camino book to help me research this but it
turned
out to be a waste of money, not telling me what options were available for
individual years and instead showing me some bogus pictures of used
(modified
paint) El Caminos for the '69 year and not factory schemes or paint
options.
So now, I'm thinking of the SS stripe on the side and probably the
Chevelle
SS stripes on the BB hood, just because I think it shows off the form of
the
 hood better.
So, does anyone have the dimensions of the hood stripes for the '69 model.
Also, does anyone have an example of the lower side two tone without the
 lower body side molding?
I guess I could have a pinstripe border between the two colors.
And I need to decide SOON. The shop wants to paint next week.
 Thanks,
 David

OK here's the old hot rodder's take on rear axle ratios and trannys. Keep
the TH-400 and get a 3.73 gear set. Why not do the four speed?. You could
get your 400 rebuilt and shift kitted twice before you could pay for the
700granted the 700 is a very good tranny, but it may be more expensive
in the long run if you race it much. I think it's best to be at or less
than 3K when cruising the highways. The 3.42 10 bolt is what all the G-body
guys strive for, but If I could change my 3.08 tomorrow, I'd go 3.73. I
drive the freeways about 40 miles a day and cruising at 80 runs 3k on the
tach. Mileage? Who cares, I didn't buy my car to get good mileage, that's
what TowRopers are for:)

Jim, I wasn't talking about turning your bumper in for another. Take yours
to a plater and have them replate it for you. Most good platers can do
wonders with a bad bumper. Even fix rust holes. I had my Nova bumper
replated here in Mich. The car was hit in the rear and the bumper was dented
up pretty good. After they gave it back to me you would have to look at the
back side to tell it was repaired. It turned out better than new. COST..
$300.00 for both front and back. (1996). I'm sure prices have gone up.

After calling the usual catalog vendors over the weekend that we
usually do parts business with (Year One, OPG, The Paddock and
  NPD), I
found that only Year One will attend Carlisle and they will only
  be
taking orders there (not bringing any parts whatsoever).

I called Ausley's today (who we've never dealt with, but whom
  we've seen
at Carlisles the past few years we've come). know come to
  Carlisle). The
guy on the phone told me that they will indeed be at Carlisle this
  year
and that their bumper prices are now $209 (pretty much matching
  the
catalog prices of the other vendors we usually deal with). He
  said that
they'll bring 5 of each year's bumpers by default and that they
  will
bring extras labelled by customer name if requested at least 2
  weeks
   before the show.

So, anyone out there have any positive or negative stories to tell
  about
Ausley's bumpers? I'm really hoping that they would bring one
  and let
me examine it before they run my credit card (as I'd really like
  to look
at the quality of any bumper before I commit to buying it), but
  maybe
   they won't do that.

Also, anyone have a phone number for the Bumper Boyz, as I'd like
  to talk
to them before Carlisle, too. Since we've never done business
  with them
*and* we've heard some negative things about them, I'm a bit wary
  to do
business with them (and there's no way I'm giving up my current
  bumper as
a core!), but I figure I shoudl at least try to get as much info
  on every
vendor that I can, since this is a piece fo the car that is going
  to be
   very visible!

As always, thank for any opinions in advance,

By the way, has anyone measured the thickness of an original NOS

against the ones of Ausley (or anyone else such as the Bumper

   that matter?

[Chevelle-List] 350 SB

2002-01-23 Thread Kevin M. Bowman

Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List

I am planning on building the 350SB with some longer term plans. The First
stage would be to rebuild the current 350 so that it has some oomph. I am
debating on the stroker in the beginning, but would like to stroke it in
stage 2. I have read a few articles that claim stroking the motor is
relatively inexpensive, since you can reuse many of the parts (heads,
intake, cam, etc).

Stage 3 would be to add a 6-71 to the 383. How feasible is this versus
rebuilding to buying a BB? I am looking at some BB prices and wonder which
would be cheaper v. performance.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

$209 w/o shipping) the Bumper Boyz today (they want $295 for one w/o
shipping), I'm inclined to look at one of Ausley's at Carlisle to see
what they look like then decide from there.

I suppose I could buy one from Ausley's and then think about getting my
original one chromed somewhere down the road once it is off the car and a
repro one on it

Jim, I wasn't talking about turning your bumper in for another. Take
 yours
to a plater and have them replate it for you. Most good platers can
 do
wonders with a bad bumper. Even fix rust holes. I had my Nova bumper
replated here in Mich. The car was hit in the rear and the bumper
 was dented
up pretty good. After they gave it back to me you would have to look
 at the
back side to tell it was repaired. It turned out better than new.
 COST..
$300.00 for both front and back. (1996). I'm sure prices have gone
 up.

Thanks for the phone number. The front bumper on my car
 currently is
WAY too good to hand over as a core, but yet it does have a couple
 of
small rust spots on it, so I'm not sure how well it would come out
replated (as well as I don't know what it would cost).

After calling the usual catalog vendors over the weekend
 that we
usually do parts business with (Year One, OPG, The Paddock and
   NPD), I
found that only Year One will attend Carlisle and they will
 only
   be
taking orders there (not bringing any parts whatsoever).

I called Ausley's today (who we've never dealt with, but whom
   we've seen
at Carlisles the past few years we've come). know come to
   Carlisle). The
guy on the phone told me that they will indeed be at Carlisle
 this
   year
and that their bumper prices are now $209 (pretty much
 matching
   the
catalog prices of the other vendors we usually deal with). He
   said that
they'll bring 5 of each year's bumpers by default and that
 they
   will
bring extras labelled by customer name if requested at least 2
   weeks
before the show.

So, anyone out there have any positive or negative stories to
 tell
   about
Ausley's bumpers? I'm really hoping that they would bring
 one
   and let
me examine it before they run my credit card (as I'd really
 like
   to look
at the quality of any bumper before I commit to buying it),
 but
   maybe
they won't do that.

Also, anyone have a phone number for the Bumper Boyz, as I'd
 like
   to talk
to them before Carlisle, too. Since we've never done business
   with them
*and* we've heard some negative things about them, I'm a bit
 wary
   to do
business with them (and there's no way I'm giving up my
 current
   bumper as
a core!), but I figure I shoudl at least try to get as much
 info
   on every
vendor that I can, since this is a piece fo the car that is
 going
   to be
very visible!

As always, thank for any opinions in advance,

Jim -69-SS396- H.

By the way, has anyone measured the thickness of an original
 NOS
   bumper
against the ones of Ausley (or anyone else such as the Bumper
   Boyz, for
that matter?

2002-01-23 Thread Brad Waller

I have a 2.73 rear behind my small block and 700R4, and I can tell I
need more. I do get about 24 mpg cruising on the highway, but I have
been planning to upgrade to a mid-3 series gear as well. 3.31 is a 20%
increase for me and was likely what I was thinking of as this get very
close to the optimal factor I have seen where they say divide 10 by
first gear ratio and you have a good rear ratio (10/3.06=3.27). But
with the large step between first (3.06) and second (1.63) on the 700R4,
it might be better to go to the high end of the scale:

3.06*2.73= 8.35
3.06*3.31=10.13
3.06*3.55=10.86
3.06*3.73=11.41
3.06*4.11=12.58

Also, I assume I need a new carrier. I thought that the 12 bolt mid
range carrier took 3.07 to 3.90 gears, but I have also seen it listed as
3.73 and below, and 3.73 and up, so there seems to be confusion out
there...

I agree with Clint. Behind the torque of a big block 3.31
 or 3.55 will
work nicely, especially with an OD.I have a s/b with
 700r4 and 3.31,
my seat of the pants feeling is for my combo 3.55 would be better.
Question though, if you drop lower than the 3.73, will you
 need a new

Pick up the new CHPdollar for dollar the SC 383 and BB are the same
price and virtually the same performance numbersif it were my choice
though, I'd go BB.

If you have that kind of money to throw around, why
not just install a built 4L80? All it is is a HD TH400 w/OD. Cheaper, strong, and
less hassle. If it was my car,I wouldn't even go that far. If the car already
had a TH400 installed,just install a set of 3.55's or something close. Add a
decent torque converter and you're ready to go. For a pure street car,the
difference between a 4.10 cog and a 3.55 is negligible,anyway. A big block can
easily pull a tall gear and 28" tall tire.
Ring gear spacers? In this day and age,I would not
even consider using one. No offense,Larry.

carrier with a ring spacer when going to 4 series gears. his does not have
that so he will have to change. my suggestion offline (tom and i are really
good buddies in spite the fact we live on opposite coasts) to tom was to keep
the th400, fix the gears (the reason he is changing them is they are howling)
and put a gear vendor over drive in. the gears are shot any old way you look
at i so figure them a wash. i say to change over to 700r4 probably total is
$1000.00 - 1250.00. to do the gear vendor you are looking at $2500.00. bottom
line is you get for $1250.00 -1500.00 more a stronger transmission with a
separate overdrive with six split speeds forward.the gear vendor is
rated for 1200 HP. simply unbolt rear housing of th400 , bolt over drive on,
shorten drive shaft and do a little wiring.you end up with a final drive of
  .75:1

No offense but looking over the last couple of days, the only question I saw
was about 68 Chevelle paint around 9:00pm Monday night. At least that's the
date/time stamp on the copy I received. Maybe nobody has a 68 that's been
on in the last couple of days. BTW, four of your responses were with the
subject of Barrett-Jackson and one was of those was off subject talking
about aluminum LS6's or LS7's - and I believe that was answered by a number
of folks.

I don't know how long you've been on the list but I know Clint has been here
for quite a while off and on and has given some expert advise and qualified
opinions. I've seen numerous replies to Tom and from Tom to things he
probably knows about. Larry has also been a frequent contributor here both
asking and answering questions.

In less than 5 minutes you come back with your own thought to the question
being asked about rear end ratios and not really an answer but an opinion.
Remember, the thread started about what gear everybody was running. Are you
running a 5:13 and plan on doing any highway driving? I know your response
was probably in fun but didn't answer the question but quite a few hundred
subscribers saw it, or will see it when they log back in.

Sometimes it just takes a while for people to get to know you and respond
quickly. Hang in there and don't get frustrated, OK? If anybody knows or
has an educated guess, they'll be along to help.

Now, anybody know if the lower body color on a 68 Chevelle wraps into the
door jam and if so, how far?

yes probably futher, i was not sure where he was the first time!
thanks for the comment on the nova, alot of people thought it was real
although it was candy red!!
but if they asked me i always said no not real
we hand painted on those stripes just from pictures, we thought it looked
nicer than the ones that yenko had high school kids putting on!!!
i'll bet if mr. Don Yenko would have known what he had he would have been
more meticulous.??

i have a chevelle with a worked 406 in it, the rear end is being narrowed and
the back half being done, it sports 455 horse on the dyno plus i plan to add
my nitrous to it (100-125hp) i asked the shop that was doing the work if the
car will pull the front tires off the ground, they said no! (im running a
worked th350) i would need to run a power glide for a deeper 1st gear. i
spoke to a trans shop who said this was not true the th350 or th400 would be
better- who is correct what should i do?? i will be doing some street
driving as well. i have not picked my rear end ratio yet. (ford 9)-but i
long to pull a wheelie!!
