sounds good but lets not lower ourselves to this man's standards (yet). john needs to make his decision on how he wasn't to handle this. in my youth i worked for a friend in a body shop and i do to this day have several friends who own shops or are body / paint men. would i have any of them do work on my chevelle? no ! ; i think not. even those with nice shops cannot seem to understand how to bid collector car work. I always ask about paint and body work and I can't say I have ever got a complete positive feedback on any question I have asked.

Ooh, I like!  If my 2800 CFM Black Magic can't handle the task for my 
Corvette, this really looks like the ticket, assuming it will fit the 
'63-'67 radiator.  4600 CFM should be able to handle anything you could 
install under a Chevelle hood.  At 16-28 Amps, you better make sure 
your alternator can handle the extra juice, and that your wallet is 
ready for the $370 or so that this will cost.

wonderful job keeping my 454 cool.  They aren't cheap at $150 or so
each.
I'm using a relay with a thermostatic switch and I also have a toggle
switch
under the dash to override the thermo switch when the A/C is running.

What is it that you want the car for?  Price appreciation, to cruise in, or to win trophies with?  It'd be an easy choice for me, as I want to drive all my cars.  I would sell the SS and keep the two fun cars.  Your logic will be different.  But if you sell the SS, it will bring in good money, and the others may not sell as easily.

But every time I see one "RAKED" I still think it looks so cl. Back in the 
'60's that was the thing to do. I can remember going to Hollywood Hot Rod shop 
to get the biggest risers that I could find to get that baby in the air, then 
cruising all the root beer stands with my buddies to show off. Crazy? Yes. Fun? 
You bet, and I have a lot of fond memories that keeps this 60 year old still 
skinning his knuckles on that '60 iron. It wasn't always just to fit bigger 
tires. I think mostly it was for the look. If it was raked you were hip. Dumb 
but hip. Hey, what's more important when your 17? Being smart or being cool. I 
remember my dad saying to me all the time "are you crazy" What have you done to 
your car? But dad, this is s cl. And the chicks dig it.
Boy, what would we do 
if we didn't have memories of our youth. For me, it keeps me young.

a "metallic luster" compared to the new oil, no 
pieces or chunks though.
Is that normal or do I have a serious problem 
here?

The Iola (WI) Old Car Show and Swap Meet, billed as the largest in the
Midwest, is this week. More than 4350 swap meet spaces (up about 150 since
last year), a Saturday car auction, a Car Corral, and acres of show cars.

That's funny. I just happened to go on their web site last
night and felt the same way. That line about how they give the best quality

I think that due to the nature of the rear axle what you are seeing is
normal.
Our race car has a F**D 9 icnch and we made a gear change with out any laps
on the oil and it had that same look you are talking about. We put same oil
back in since there was no laps on the oil. Have had no problems with the
rear end.

Oddly enough, Ron wrote me saying that he has been getting emails about my
car, and that most of them are favorable, and that when people see the
pictures they see that he did a good job. That's why I decided to post just
a few of the pictures that show the real story.

I am not going to sue Ron because he lives five and a half hours from me and
I can't have my time tied up running back and forth to court. The defendant
gets 2 chances to appear before there is a default, so he can basically
force me to go out there the first time for nothing. Also, there's a big
difference between winning a judgment and getting paid. Maybe I could put a
lien on his house but I couldn't force him to sell it.

Right now I would like to get my sway bar picked up, and even that seems to
be too much to ask for. I sent 3 separate emails last week asking when I
could have my sway bar picked up, and never got a straight answer.

The most ironic thing to me about that highest quality work for the lowest
possible price b.s. is that Ron will never, ever even estimate how much a
job will cost. Then he tells you that the reason it came out bad was because
you didn't spend enough money. Well, I spent the amount that he asked for.
Was I supposed to send more than that? The bottom line is that he did a
crappy job for a lot of money. Really the whole car should be done over and
I'm assuming that the brand new quarter panel I bought is likely to end up
in the garbage along with Ron's shabby floorboard patches, and the dust from
the paint job that will have to come off.

you. I noticed that you included a link to the chop, I mean shop that

 I have a set of four 16" rally wheels that are 8" wide. I had them on my 65 el camino and the rears are custom made to fit the stock small wheel well openings. Included with the wheels are 4 trim rings in stainless steel and 4 corvette small flat rally caps ( these are the best looking caps chev ever made} . The set also includes 2 like new rear Goodyear 235/60/16 tires mounted and balanced, and 2 good front Goodyear 225/60/16 tires mounted and balanced. Until now I've been quiet on this matter, but i think its kind of too easy money for 
Ron (If you go over to his shop he will be without his pants because he did laugh them 
of thinking about how he cheated you).

I dont know how much you earn or how solid your economy is overall, but I know for 
sure that I'm really far of coming even close to $ 9000 a month so I'll be willing to 
spend that time to get at least something out of him.
You say that you maybe wont get anything more than a lien on his house, but if he ever 
sells it he'll have to pay your $$$ before buying a new one, and he will have problems 
getting a loan (Now I speak of how it is in Norway).

And John, he blew your $ 9000 and you keep worrying about a $100 sway bar (that you 
probably could get new for $50 with your contacts)!?!?!

Dont you have an old school friend who is willing to pick up $1 from Ron to bring

 be too much to ask for. I sent 3 separate emails last week asking when I
 could have my sway bar picked up, and never got a straight answer.
 
 The most ironic thing to me about that highest quality work for the lowest
 possible price b.s. is that Ron will never, ever

 job will cost. Then he tells you that the reason it came out bad was because
 you didn't spend enough money. Well, I spent the amount that he asked for.
 Was I supposed to send more than that? The bottom line is that he did a
 crappy job for a lot of money. Really the whole car should be done over and
 I'm assuming that the brand new quarter panel I bought is likely to end up
 in the garbage along with Ron's shabby floorboard patches, and the dust from

been looking into replacing my washer pump also. Not sure if I have this all 
correct. First, there are two types of wiper systems. The hidden type has a 
motor that has a round "barrel" bottom (angled 45 degrees downward to the right 
when viewing the firewall from the front of the car). The non-hidden type has 
arectangular looking motor. Each motor type has a different washer pump. 
As far as I can tell, all SS models have the hidden type of windshield wipers. 
My non-SS 72 Elky has hidden wipers also.I also see mention of "Demand" 
wiper systems. This system uses the same motor but has an additional relay (i.e. 
read different wiring harness) and uses a switch on the shifter handle. I am not 
sure this was an option on Chevelles especially those that have floor 
shifters.

I'll fight it if I can get a lawyer to take the case on a contingency basis
(no fee unless damages are collected). Small claims court is not enough
money, and a lawyer for a real court case could cost more than any damages
that might ever be actually collected, which would just result in more time
and money out the window.

I know, I have thought to myself that by comparison it's kind of petty to
worry about the sway bar right now, but it would only cost me about $15 in
shipping to get it back and I can't buy one for that amount. It also belongs
to me and I don't see why Ron should get to keep it.

IIRC all
GM A-body cars had hidden wipers by 1970. I think 1969 was the last year for
the 2dr post cars. I could be wrong though. That's just from memory.

The first pump I got was the square modelbut 
I'm returning that one this week  will hopefully get the correct 
onenext time!?
The original washer pump I've got is based on a 
slightly "pear shaped" base plate with rounded corners.
Thepump I'm gettinghas a black carbon 
reinforced plastic pump which is stronger, withstand cold
much better  doesn't get brittle over 
timelike the original "white" pump. (I'm told)

all I have is the quarter trim panels- i need all the rest- how many diffrent pieces are there?? will the top fly up while driving without them?





The metal part that the plastic tabs attach to are stainless, about 16 gauge and about six inches long and an inch wide. I doubt that without them the top will fly up, especially if you have the top boot properly installed. Nobody I know of is repopping the metal part of the latch, so you'll probably have to find them in a junkyard or swap meet. Push comes to shove, you may be able to fab up a pair using the info I've just provided. If they're not perfect, who cares? They aren't visible with the top down anyway, and barely visible from the inside with the top up. Good luck finding or fabbing what you need.

What you need to do is find a young lawyer who just passed the Bar exam.
They are hungry for cases (and future referrals) and are more willing to
take cases that might only net then a few thousand dollars like yours.
Typical deals are 25%-33% of a settlement pre-trial, and 40%-50% once a
trial has started, all after taking out expenses.  I had a small deal
once with a deal similar to the above terms, and the lawyer was young.
He gave me very close to my 30% even after expenses.  He could have
taken far more, but since the settlement was only a few thousand dollars
he ate much of the costs in his fee to make me happy.

The way I found this guy was to talk to the lawyer I wanted.  He did not
want the case, but knew of this guy who might.  Try the same thing, or
maybe there is a local legal school or Bar exam school that might have
listings of new lawyers ready for a slam dunk case.

I think it depends heavily on the kind of wheels you have.  Both my cars
have RWLs-the Chevelle has Rally rims and my Camino has 80s Z-28 rims and
they both look fine (IMO) with RWLs.  However, if I had something like
Centerlines, I'd definitely go blackwall.

I don't know the old school tire sizes, but for 195-70-14, the 70 in the
modern tire size has nothing to do with width.

For your example, 195-75-14

195 = section width, in millimeters.  This is really the width designation.
A 205 is wider than 195, but narrower than a 215.

75 = section height.  This is the height of the sidewall, expressed as a
percentage of the section width.  In this case, our section height is 75% of
our width, 195. (which computes to  195 x .75 = 146.5mm section height)

14 = Rim Diameter.

Actually, the sizes are usually published as such:  P195/75HR14
P= Passenger car

H = Speed rating.  There are 5 or 6 speed ratings.  I believe H is good for
up to 112 MPH or something like that. Some of the ratings are H S, V  Z.
Z-rated, the highest, are rated for over 150 MPH.

R = Radial construction

Going from a 195-75-14 to a 195-70-14 will NOT result in a wider tire, just
one with a slightly shorter sidewall (and therefore slightly smaller overall
diameter).  To get a wider tire, move up to a 205, 215, or 225. You'll  also
probably end up with a 65 or 60-series tire  to keep the overall diameter
from getting too tall.  It's not the most intuitive system in the world,.
There are lots of tirw size calculators on the net which will let you
plug-in a tire size and  spit out an overall height in inches.

When trying to come up with nearly-stock diameter tires for my '72 Camino, I
ended up using 235-60-15 tires.

My favorite tires have always been the old Eagle STs (goodyear), as far 
as looks go anyway.  

If you like the RWL, then go for it.  I think they look ok, depending 
on the rest of the car.

Oh man, aren't those really small?   I used to run 225/70 15s, and they 
fill the wheel well nicely. 

I tried on 3 sets for my front tires before I found the right size.   I 
can get the size to you tonight if you want?   They are 205/70 15s ( I 
think).  I wanted a skinnier wheel, but still need to fill up the wheel 
well.

215 70 14 is a good size to run with if you want to keep the currect rims.  
235 60 14 will fill it out a little more but you will need a at least a 7 wide 
rim.  I personally would dump the 14's and upgrade to a 15 x 7 inch rim all 
around.  Now depending on what you want (all 4 tires the same, or 1 size on the 
front, 1 on the back for a slightly raked look) is up to you.

aftermarket aluminum slot wheels on it and right now the plan is to keep

215 70 14 is a good size to run with if you want to keep the currect rims.
235 60 14 will fill it out a little more but you will need a at least a 7
wide
rim.  I personally would dump the 14's and upgrade to a 15 x 7 inch rim all
around.  Now depending on what you want (all 4 tires the same, or 1 size on
the
front, 1 on the back for a slightly raked look) is up to you.

overall
 diameter).  To get a wider tire, move up to a 205, 215, or 225. You'll
also
 probably end up with a 65 or 60-series tire  to keep the overall diameter
 from getting too tall.  It's not the most intuitive system in the world,.
 There are lots of tirw size calculators on the net which will let you
 plug-in a tire size and  spit out an overall height in inches.

 When trying to come up with nearly-stock diameter tires for my '72 Camino,
I
 ended up using 235-60-15 tires.

 I'm assuming that the brand new quarter panel I bought is likely to end up
 in the garbage along with Ron's shabby floorboard patches, and the dust

I've done bothblack or raised letters. I think the trend today is blackwall. BUT, your 69 would probably look good with raised letters. Do you have a friend with raised letters so you could "try" one side to see if you really do like it? 

If I ever get my LS6 back on the road, I planned on two sets of tires..originals ( if I can find them) for show, and probably whatever is the newest tire around for cruzin...

I've only had the occasion to put a lien on one item (a car in fact) in
my lifetime.  The client refused to pay the bill for agreed to work at
an agreed price.  After giving him sufficient time to raise the money, I
put a lien on the car.  He WAS forced to sell the car or give it up.  I
could sell the car (which I eventually did) for what was owed (the lien
amount) and if it sold for more than that amount, he would get the rest.
As it turned out, the car worth (read sellable) about what he owed
against it.  I got my money and he lost his car.  Unfortunate but better
him than me.

I think your problem might be construed as a matter of perception.  You
say shoddy work, he says not.  Unless there's an arbitrator to decide,
since no description of the quality was given, it would be up to the
arbitrator to determine if you got what you paid for.

In my case, I had parts receipts, shop receipts and a fair labor cost
(hours and rates by the accepted rate manual at the time) so I had proof
(if you will) of what was expected and what was done.

Either way, a bummer for sure.

I think it's just personal preference.  I like the RWL's, so I always do
white out.  I think it depends on the total look of the car too.  I
think it's more of an old school look.  I don't think I'd do it if I
had 17 wheels and small sidewalls, but with the 255/60/15's and
235/60/15's, I like the white out look.

I am going after the correctness look.  I don't care about traction with
these tires, I have other wider tires for that.  I wont be doing any slalom
or road courses.

My build sheet has option PM7 -  F60x15 w/raise... (mouse damage to the
rest of the line).

I drive the car around a bit, but not on long trips too often.  Because the
car is a cool old muscle car, I think I will accept it for what it is
(rougher ride maybe).  Also, it has a Pete Jackson noisy cut cam drive and
flow master mufflers if those don't drive me nuts I think I will be OK
with the tires :-)

I will let you know what I think in about a month, I have to get the stock
rims restored yet.

John, Put a little meat on your Elky. My 65 has 235/60/14's. I went with BFG
radial T/A's. I have put about 12,000 hard miles on them and am highly
satisfied. RWL or not is a personal preference. I went with RWL and Iike the
look. They are on the old standby, Cragar SS wheels. If I were starting from
scratch I would go up to 15 wheels and tires. My disc front brakes are a
very close fit with the 14's.

  Sorry to hear about your ordeal. We weld panels on but do not
finish bodywork or paint, we are a metal shop. The thing that struck me is
the best quality work for the lowest price thing. Anytime it says lowest
price that usually means short cuts. He took the short cuts but still
charged you the high price.
A great job for a fair price is how I like to put it. 

I far from agree with this Ron guy but I understand how hard it is to bid a
job when you can't always see all the damage. Everyone wants a price so I
tell them it is an estimate only and, this is the key, I call them if we
find anything unexpected and let them come and see it before we fix it and
never ever spend the customers money unless he okays it first. To paint your
car without fixing the inner wheelwells etc is beyond my comprehension.
Maybe I missed this but why did you go so far away to get the work done?
Just curious.

Not that you don't already know this but even if you were happy with the job
nine grand is a little steep. You should always give the customer the
benefit of the doubt, I have often knocked some off the price if  it came to
more than I thought it should have. Making a little less and having a happy
customer is way better than making more from an unhappy customer as I
suspect Ron is about to find out.

He is still lingering around. He posted on TC not too long ago. He made the trip out to Nashville, then up to the MCC show a week later. I gave him a hand putting carpet in his green GMC Sprint in Nashville on that Friday night. Shoot him over an email, I'm sure he will get back to ya.
