RE: [Chevelle-list] Eastwood Header Paint
Herb, I think I am going to use VHT the next time around. But you're telling me that the texture of the header itself counts a whole bunch. The metal wasn't perfectly smooth as I had to strip off the factory Hedman paint (which was peeling right out of the box) with a wire brush wheel. But what you say makes sense. I'll just wack this one up to experience... I used the flame proof paint from VHT and believe it or not, the paint didn't burn off. If you remove your headers to repaint, then I recommend you get them sandblasted first. It really sounds sweet. I also had installed a set of Hedman headers, you know, the cheap kind that you have to paint. I didn't want to put a lot of money in the headers because I have a small block and plan on swapping it out in a year or so with a big block. Anyway, I had stripped those headers down to metal even though I bought them new. I used isopropyl alcohol to clean the bare metal. I painted them with Eastwood Header paint. They had dried for about a week and then I put a second coat on. I put the headers on about a week later and were on the car for a few weeks before today. My son and I took the Elky out for a drive to break in the new pipes. When we got back and popped the hood we noticed that the paint was peeling with lots of bare metal showing. What'd I do wrong? I'm ready to go back out, pull 'em and fix what I did wrong. Larry 72 El Camino

Take it to a windshield dealer they have the "right stuff" to make that little button adhere to the windshield. Cost, mine did it for free (tipped him though) The stuff tht you purchase over the counter is good but you have to watch it when you put that button on the glass. Many people put it on backwards. Go to the dealer it's worth the trip. Bob

RE: [Chevelle-list] Low Vacuum
Hi Gary, If I'm reading your post correctly, you say you have an Edelbrock 650 carb. This may not fix your lack of vacuum, but as far as being able to adjust your idle it may help. With the engine off, remove both idle mixture screws and using either compressed air, carb cleaner, or even WD-40, blow the the idle screw holes out. A while back I was having a hard time adjusting the idle on my Elky (Edelbrock 750) and after cleaning the holes the idle speed would actually change as I adjusted the screws. RE: [Chevelle-list] Power Steering
Just a thought Herb. You could choose to leave the car with manual steering if you like it that way. Unless you want the upgrade to power steering, you could install the pump for the brakes, but just skip the steering box when you plumb it up. If it is anything like the setup in last month's Chevy Hi Performance, you just have two return lines to the reservoir. If you do want the power steering and it is not too late, have you thought about a box rebuilt to modern specs (higher effort, faster ratio?) from a place like Lee Manufacturing? Yep, coming from SoCal. If you're paying $1.80-$1.97, it will actually be cheaper than we have here. The cheapest regular I have seen is $1.83, with most over $1.90. We have refineries all over, yet our prices jump when a pipeline ruptures in Arizona! I'm leaving in one week. We'll spend the weekdays in Sierra Vista (don't ask me why an elderly lady would choose to move way out there...) and then head to Scottsdale for the Millard Fillmore Corvette Classic (http://www.corvette-paradise.com/MILLARD.html) for the weekend. As of now, you can still GET gas... Just be prepared to wait in LONG lines. The price will probably be going way up too, the longer this goes on. I heard this morning that a place in Chandler was over $3/gal. I also heard a few places in the East valley were in the $2.60 range. I had a similar problem and it turned out to be the wrong size something in the carb. What ever parts control the idle circuit. It sounded like a pretty healthy durationed cam but when the carb was overhauled the engine had great vacuum and idled stock as could be. RE: [Chevelle-list] Replacing Fuel Lines
Tony, have you tried unbolting the rear shocks from the axle? This will allow the axle to drop a little further. Pay attention, though, as this will allow the rear to drop enough to let the rear springs to come out. Not a big deal if they do, as you just put them back on the axle and jack it back up. -Dave -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Behalf Of [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Monday, August 18, 2003 2:39 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [Chevelle-list] Replacing Fuel Lines Hey guys, I picked up some stainless steel fuel lines to replace the leaky ones on my 69 SS. RE: [Chevelle-list] lost brakes
I use the clear hose now by putting it on the bleeders and running into a small cup. Why throw the hoses out? Just don’t use them for anything but brake fluid. The reason the fronts are not bled is because I don’t have a 5/16 line wrench and stopped at a store to buy one, and they didn’t have one either. I'm going to have to see if I can find one locally, and also see if I can replace those bleeders with ones that take a 3/8 wrench like the rest of the world does. I have never bled a MC before and it's not a new one, so I don't have any plastic fittings. I've done the hose into the resevoir thing before though. I guess I'll have to buy some "scrap" lines. I suppose this means it will also have to be bled at the wheel cylinders again? I'll be disconnecting those lines at the MC, right? This is a big pain in the a** because I don't have anybody to help. You're supposed to bleed it before hooking it up to the brake system. They usually come with some plastic fittings and plastic hose for doing it in the box. Bending up some scrap metal lines works too. Put the fittings into the master cylinder, attach plastic hoses so that they dump back into the reservoir, fill it with fluid, and pump the pedal until there are no more air bubbles. Then remove the plastic fittings and hook up your brake lines and proceed to bleed the rest of the system. -Dave -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of John Nasta Sent: Monday, August 18, 2003 8:56 AM To: Chevelle List Subject: [Chevelle-list] lost brakes Hmmm... My 69 El Camino seems to have lost its brakes (drum BTW). I replaced all of the shoes, wheel cylinders & hoses, and bled the rears (believe it or not, I can't seem to get my hands on a 5/16 line wrench for the fronts). Yesterday I started it for the first time with the intention of moving it (it was going to be the first actual drive, albeit in a back yard), but the pedal goes all the way to the floor, even if I pump it. It never seems to build any pressure. I used DOT3 fluid. The master was dry, but I am completely flushing the system, so the rears at least should be well bled out. The other big moment was when I went to put it in gear and nothing happened. I quickly put it back in park and hope that wasn't a total bonehead move, but now I'm thinking that maybe I just installed the transmission and never filled it. There is nothing on the dipstick. DOH! Unfortunately in the area where the car is, there isn't much nearby. It would have taken me about an hour to get trans fluid on a Sunday afternoon, so I'm blowing that off until next week. I also had the car out in the sun for insurance photos and noticed a few more things, but as my friend Jack said "the horse is dead". Anyway, let me know if you have any advice about the brakes. [Chevelle-list] Low Vacuum
I recently converted my car from manual brakes to power. They work, but I don't get the kind of assist I would like, so I got the vacuum gauge out and took some measurements. I barely get 10 inches of mercury at idle (the spec I think is something like 17). My engine is a 327 out of a 1967 Corvette. A previous owner added a Edelbrock performer series intake and 650 cfm carb. Judging from the idle, I doubt very much that the car has any kind of radical cam in it. Using my vacuum gauge, I systematically went around the carb and the intake individually pulling hoses and blocking that port, looking for leaks. I still get about 10 inches (unsteady). I then tried the trick of spraying carb cleaner around the base of the carb, and the runners on the intake looking for a change in operation. I didn't see any. A friend told me to check the idle screws. When I tried that, I found that I could slow the idle speed if they were near closed, but once opened up a bit I get the same basic idle speed (and vacuum) over a very wide range of adjustment. I was actually afraid the screw would come out. This has morphed from being a brake issue to being a "is my engine OK" issue. What has me a bit confused is that the stinking thing runs pretty well. I seem to have lots of power, and the idle is reasonably smooth. It'll idle in the driveway all day and not stall. Does anybody have any ideas. I want to paint this car, and want all the mechanical issues taken care of before then. If I need to pull the heads, now is the time. While the tranny cooler lines were disconnected and there was no coolant in the engine, I made a note and taped it to the steering column so it hung over the ignition lock. All it said was "NO". [Chevelle-list] 1969 Malibu door panels
I found out this weekend that my original door panels also have the wood-grain effect. I think I could send these out to have them reproduced if enough people are interested. There was some talk about it last week, so let me know how many people would want them. I also don't have a sample of the rears. I seem to remember some little nameplates that said Malibu on my door panels, and those seem to be gone. Also, near the top of each panel, above the window handles, there is a roughly 2x3 inch rectangular opening. What is that for? OTTOMH I can't think of anything that size up there. And finally, what's the best way to separate the top metal piece from the cardboard? Re: [Chevelle-list] Paint you own car vs maco, earl?
If the fenders are NOS I would consider them good but if they are reproduction I would reprime, unless they give instructions otherwise. NOS black has good salt spray properties and who knows what the repro has on it. If they are repro fenders check adhesion of the primer in the known rust areas. Use a good sticky tape, Duct tape would work. Just tape it and pull the tape off. Are you going to use epoxy primer on the body? Re: [Chevelle-list] Paint you own car vs maco, earl?
I'd say you have a good idea what you need to do at this point. The black primed new fenders should accept your primer as is. Expect to spend some time on the fiberglass hood. It is real difficult to get one to look as good as metal, plus over time you will see shrinkage in the fiberglass and primer that will expose any little flaw that is under that shiny surface. Can't be helped. My perfect (three years ago) 65 El Camino is starting to show all of the above. Only thing I can do is a little rework to cover up the ever growing number of flaws that are coming out with time. Perfection is the benchmark that always seems just out of reach, but it is still a worthy goal. Good Luck. Be sure to read and follow directions for the converter. Most require cleaning with soap and water after their use. And be sure to use an etching primer after getting to bare metal and before using plastic or primer. This will prevent a recurrence of surface rust.
