RE: [Chevelle-List] Chevelle club respect - an open letter to club officers

2002-10-19 Thread 396guy
Title: Message

Chevelle 69,

I know that Chuck reads this mail forum often and
maybe he'll kick in here as I certainly don't speak for Chuck and I don't know
just where or how far he intends to take ACES.  Is is to be an organization
with nationwide exposure (like NCOA was in its heyday) or the LGC national
organization?

While I'm not a marketing person by any means, but that's
where it's at, and I'm sure Chuck has marketing savvy.  If, IF, ACES is a
means to an end then I think it needs to be promoted more OUTSIDE the regular
Chevelle circle, much as you suggest.

I would (or have dedicated volunteers) make an
appearance at EVERY car show and cruise in possible for exposure and not just
ACES/Chevelle events; otherwise you're just preaching to the choir.  I
realize that Chuck's schedule probably prevents him from doing this on much more
than a local scale or thorough word-of-mouth, but there just might be enough
folks out here that would be willing to carry an ACES banner, set up a small
promotion (and membership drive) table at local and regional shows to increase
membership.  With the demise of NCOA and its folding into the LGC
organization, I'd attend every LGC show and recruit members.  Every
~Goodguys~, ~World of Wheels~, ~Daryl Starbird~ shows and ISCA shows should
have a booth with a representative.

The ~volunteers~ would require a booth setup of some type
commensurate with the event, membership forms, promotional material, merchandise
to show/sell, a mission statement, etc. plus above all, an enthusiastic attitude
to promote ACES in particular and Chevelles in general and a stick-to-it
outlook.  The ACES rep could even ~donate~ door prizes and/or donate/pick a
~Chevelle-of-the-show~ award.

Aside from two or three ACES and or Chevelle a year, I try
to make 8-10 local type car shows and a couple of "professional" shows a summer
season and I'm close enough to a couple of ~Goodguys~ shows to have made them
this year.

There is a lot of potential out there but, again, it boils
down to just where Chuck wishes to take ACES since that's our major vehicle to
promote Chevelles on a national scale.

  Gents,

This is NOT meant to slam anyone, criticize, or cause hurt feelings. My only
intentions is to help start brainstorming ideas on how to get a little more
respect for our clubs and people from Chevrolet and parts manufacturers
  and retailers.

Here's the way I see it, and I may be wrong, please correct me if I am.
I think that while GM support has dwindled in some ways (increased in others
maybe) that part of it could be our own fault. Maybe not directly, but maybe
we could be doing more for ourselves to get the respect and recognition that
our hobby deserves. I think we would all benefit a lot from an increase in
support from GM & manufacturers. While it's great that we have as many
parts available as we do .that says something in itself. It says how many
of us there are and that there is one heck of a demand. But that demand is not
"in your face ..here we are" visible. It's in the form of onsies and twosies
phone calls and web orders to "little guys". GM has no way of seeing
  this!

Chuck has been wonderful at ACES and as our only national club to
represent us we need to throw our support behind him even more. While the guy
has to be busier than a one armed wallpaper hanger with his good arm
tied behind his back taking care of club stuff and his show and
all, he can't be expected to do everything. That's where clubs and
officers are going to need to help.

While we are a mighty force with just our online numbers, but
the amount of Chevelle owners I have talked to at cars shows that have never
heard of ACES or local Chevelle clubs, and are not "online" is a majority of the people I have talked
to!  We will need the majority of them with us to show the numbers of
people we have to GM and others. I am sure local clubs have their ways of
recruiting locals and that's probably better in some places than others. While
local recruiting by clubs is great it will only get you so far. It won't reach
but a small percentage of the people and it's like swinging a bat blindfolded,
you'll get some, but it's a small percentage of those that are out
  there.

  So
how do we get to the rest? How do we get the respect from showing our numbers
in force? How do we help ourselves? We can begin by doing the easy thing
first, and that is making sure that all of our online resources a

RE: [Chevelle-List] Throttle Linkage

2002-10-19 Thread 396guy

Rich,

There should be a hole in the throttle arm of the carb as
well, about the overall size of a nut for a 1/4" bolt.  There is a rubber
~grommet~ that fits in the hole with (normally) a nylon bushing that has a hole
your throttle rod fits into then the rod is secured with a cotter pin.  The
ball-stud arrangement is for later cars with a throttle
cable.

I try and salvage them from old 4-bbls whenever possible
because nobody made them in the aftermarket for a long time.  If you want
to email me offline, I have a few pics of how it's suppose to
look.

RE: [Chevelle-List] car dollies

2002-10-09 Thread 396guy

I towed my son's (then) 69 Camaro on one about a 100 miles
or so - mostly highway.  Put the front wheels on the dolly, roped the
steering wheel to the the door, put it in neutral (automatic) and pulled it
home.  The place you rent the dolly from should supply instructions.
If not, check out a U-Haul dealer, I know they have a little instruction guide
for theirs.  Also, make sure your 64 Impala will fit on the dolly.
U-Haul had a hard time finding one wide enough for the ~older~ car.

RE: [Chevelle-List] Water pump hose size for BBC

2002-10-03 Thread 396guy

Kent,

The rep from Coolflex swears up and down it's 2" as well. I probably have
the exception to the rule but...I just replaced my radiator with an aluminum
unit. The current lower hose is a flex hose. Thinking I'd have to get a
longer one I didn't pay attention to which end went where when I removed it.
Testing for length after the installation I found it would still work. Then
I thought, did I just get lucky with the two ends so I turned the hose
around and it still fit. I then measured the O.D. of the lower hose outlet
on the water pump and it matched the input on the radiator. Both will take
the 1 3/4" hose size. Granted the pump is nearly 15 years old and I
purchased it from Summit simply as a chrome replacement, but it's apparently
not the same as other big block water pumps. Looks like something I'll have
to remember if/when the pump needs replacement - get a new hose at the same
time :)

[Chevelle-List] Water pump hose size for BBC

2002-09-30 Thread 396guy

This may sound like a silly question, but what is the standard hose size
(I.D.) for a BBC water pump? A rep from Cool Flex said that every big block
(not just Chevy) the he's seen has a 2" I.D. hose outlet. On their site,
when ordering a lower hose kit and checking the Big Block box, they come
back with a 1 3/4" on one end and a 2" reducer on the other. I just
replaced the radiator in my 67 big block car and double checked the lower
hose and it's 1 3/4" on both ends. I'm using a Summit (long) water pump
that I've had for close to 15 years now...have they changed or do I have an
odd pump?

[Chevelle-List] Vent window handle for 67 Elky too

2002-09-30 Thread 396guy

John,

I think I deleted a message on this thread - are there different mounting
styles between SS and non-SS or Malibu and Elky vent windows? I need a pair
for my 67 Elky as well. Is the CHV4350 (pair) just the left (PP00186) and
right (PP00187) sides combined? Doesn't appear to be since the pair are
listed to fit only 66-67 (are these the SS handles?) where the individual
units fit 64-67 (non-SS?)

There are so many versions of Outlook Express, but try under Tools >

replying to a message and "...including original message..." is probably NOT
selected. On Outlook 2000 it's under Tools > Options > Email Options - On
replies and forwards; then you select from a drop down box what to do with
the original message.

.030 over is a pretty standard rebuild and it takes nothing away from being
a "stock" engine. Now, aluminum intake, headers, hot ignition, chrome
accessories...yes. A standard rebuild with a stock appearing top end is
still stock IMO. Either way, don't trash the engine.

RE: [Chevelle-List] Keeping my numbers matching spun bearing block in the car?

2002-09-24 Thread 396guy

Unless you can find another date coded block with the
correct suffix and you want to keep it ~numbers matching~, you'll have to
rebuild the current engine.  I'd redo the whole thing and tank the block
and heads to remove any bearing particles, surely they've contaminated the
entire engine.  (Do they still tank blocks and heads anymore?  Maybe
sonic cleaning is the preferred method now?)  Crank kits are readily
available in .010/.010 up to .030/.030 if yours can't be salvaged.  I'd
also think seriously about replacing the rods (or at least having them checked
for size) on those bearings that let go.  Have the shop check the cam and
lifter surfaces very carefully as well.

Losing a bearing doesn't always come with dropping oil
pressure.  if you have a light it probably doesn't come on 'till the 8-10
lb range anyway.

Another option probably in the same price range would be a
350/330hp crate engine and keep your original if the car is a
driver.

Hey guys, it's been a few years but I'm back on
the list for a little bit :) (Hi to AZJimmy if he's still around... He still
has those cruise-master cruise control units we were trying to figure out..
  heheh)..

Anyway, I've got a '71 Chevelle SS with the #'s
matching CJD code motor and years ago I had it rebuilt... Nothing
extraordinary, and in fact I have no idea on some of the specs.. The only
thing I can remember is they supposedly used Keith Black HyperEutectics.. But,
regardless, aside from painting it FORD BLUE (YECH!!), the also apparently
didn't do the best job in installing the bearings.. See, I'm cruising down the
highway a few months ago turning about 4000rpm (3.31's, P235/60/15's on stock
SS rims, and a TH-350 with a shift kit and a stock converter) and it gets this
rattling/knocking noise.. I pulled it over immediately and got it towed
home.. At first I thought it might have been the battery's
negative motor-ground came off (mostly frying my fusible link) and was
rattling against the fan.. No such luck-- I dropped the pan a little and
fished out some chunks of metal.. Yeah-- I think its a bearing.. Strangely, I
didn't have an oil light go on.. So I hope that means I'm in the clear as
far as major components go (block, heads, etc).. Amyway, do I keep this motor
in the car (it's already 30 over) or stick it on a stand and install a freshly
rebuilt 350? I was thinking about canibalizing the block for the pistons
but I was advised to just build another motor... I intend on keeping the
numbers matching block period, but I just figure I'd like to know if its
wise to do a bearing job on it or play it safe and drop in another
  rebuild...

Moneywise they're both going to run similar
because I intend on tearing down my original block and tanking it... I WILL
have it painted the right color whether or not it goes back in the car right
  now..

Anyway, any advice is greatly appreciated :)

Chilton's shows the HO to be from either a 69 Corvette 327/T.H. or 65/66/67
Corvette with Powerglide.HO doesn't show up on big cars, Chevelles,
Camaros, or Chevy II's. If it is HD, it could be a 350 from a 69 big car
w/M.T. or a 66/67 Corvette with short water pump without exhaust emission.

Best to get a casting number from the block to determine for sure the cubic
inches.

There are no known numbers of cars painted a particular color, just as there
aren't numbers on how many bench seat, red, 4-speed cars came with a vinyl
top and AM/FM radio. I don't mean to be sarcastic here, but GM claims all
records were lost. The only real numbers we do know are how many of a
certain model series were built such as 180,401 Malibu V-8 coupes and 55,309
1968 Super Sport coupes (see

Chad,

I believe this is Tripoli Turquoise in 68 -
http://www.dalesplace.com/images/chevelle_shows/aces2002/68-69/p001206.jpg -
one of my favorite colors beside orange.

Your prices are probably pretty close except the shifter. B&M shifters run
in the $150-$175 range. For $11.5K, I'd check the mechanicals like brakes,
suspension, engine condition (such as a compression check, will it run on
unleaded fuel, etc.) You don't mention the transmission type, TH350 or TH400
maybe?

you bring your own pieces since they're not making a profit on the parts.
Except for mating the headers to the front pipe though, you can install the
rest of it yourself. I did it using a small piece of pipe to slip over the
header reducer and front header pipe, clamped them temporarily till I drove
to a muffler shop and had them welded. The hardest parts were getting the
old exhaust off and getting the "H" pipe cut and installed correctly laying
on my back.

If I had to do again (which I may on my 67 Elky soon), I'd let the shop do
it. Back is getting too bad to be laying on the concrete for a few hours.
:*)

I have a short .wav file of them at

Kent,

Didn't mean it that way. :*)  The only time I've ever
chastised anyone was using a shot of John Griffis '71 on eBay trying to
sell theirs.  Instead of taking their own pictures, they said, "It looks
like this...(sic)"

If Mr. Macy brings the car I'll see what I can do about
some engine shots.  Don't know if he'll let me trace the tach wire or
not...

    Sorry about "stealing" your

on July, 29th. when we were talking about the Rarest Cars in the

"details" of the engine detailing (vacuum hose routings, fuel
lines, PS set-up w/remote and ps hoses, heater box hoses, engine ground
straps, and if it has a factory tach where does the wire
enter/exit the firewall ?  - my assembly manual is
unclear).  I realize that sounds like a lot, but that is my Christmas

greatly appreciated.   Hopefully, he will bring the car to the show.

RE: [Chevelle-List] exhaust question

2002-09-17 Thread 396guy

I don't think the Turbo style mufflers will get any deeper, just older and
never sound like Flowmasters. Check
http://www.flowmastermufflers.com/web10/pages33-34.pdf for their mufflers
and/or the American Thunder kit which is the entire exhaust - although you
will have to modify it for stock exhaust as they're designed to
"cut-to-length-fit" headers.

I've heard negative things about acid dipping - namely it's nigh on
impossible to remove the residue so it keeps eating away. No experience,
just hearsay. I had mine blasted with walnut shells and it seem to work

RE: [Chevelle-List] Bench Seat ???

2002-09-17 Thread 396guy

When you say "split bench" seat, you mean a single bench
that the backs fold forward or something like a 60/40 split bench seat; actually
two seats but not buckets.  I don't think Chevelles had a true split bench
seat, just a normal bench and buckets.

RE: [Chevelle-List] Shiftworks 66/67 Chevelle dash gauge conversion set

2002-09-12 Thread 396guy

I don't know of anyone who has yet. I guess to retain the factory look it
might be alright but I notice they don't include any wiring for the BATT
gauge but maybe it's in the instructions on how to hook it up properly.
Would have been nice if they included copper tubing as per original GM
instead of nylon for $205. Although you can get a good set of AutoMeter
gauges for a whole lot less if you don't mind them under the dash.

[Chevelle-List] Fuse box wanted for 67 Chevelle

2002-09-09 Thread 396guy

Anyone,

Before I tackle a rewiring job I'd like to obtain a fuse box from a 67
Chevelle. It doesn't have to work (won't be used anyway) but I would like
at least 6"-8" of the wiring coming out the back. I want to have a spare
one to ~read~ and figure where original wires went.

I'm looking for a donation here but I'll gladly pay any postage/shipping.
Please email me off-line if you'd like to donate .

Dale,

Nice
write-up and pictures.  From their website, it looks like you can
tell that there is an LED array when the lights are lit, but from your
pictures it looks just like the regular bulb.  So, when you look at
your car with the LED array, can you tell?

The pictures didn't do the installation justice but I
wasn't about to reinstall the bulbs for a fairer test :*).  The
LEDs are brighter and give a ~fuller~ light as opposed to the ~single
spot~ of the bulb.  I've been told they are easier to see when
being followed in the rain as well.  Not being in the trailing
car however, I can't vouch for it, just what I was
told.

If I
were to install these, it would be a lot more expensive than the
$90!  Since you have to remove the housing and loosen the
bumper, it would make sense to replace the nasty looking
parts.  First, I would need new bezels ($150), then my lenses would
look like crap ($40), and I would need gaskets ($9).  Assuming I
could stop there, I would end up with almost $300 just to replace $1 in
light bulbs!

Isn't that the way it always happens?
LOL!

But
I do see the need for these.  Before I had my car painted, people
would complain and tell me how dim my brake lights were.  I tried
the brighter bulbs, but they did not last long and were a pain to
replace every few months.  So, I added a 3rd brake light in the
molding above the rear window.  I'll have to take a picture of this
to better explain, but it is not at all apparent that the LED bar is
there until I step on the brakes.  The shop also fixed up the
reflectors and now I have great visibility.

I've had a third brake light for some time.
Originally I had a $19.95 special from AutoZone.  When I had the
interior done a couple of years ago, I had an LED unit installed in the
console unit that goes up and over the package tray.  I don't have
any pictures of it specifically, but it's in the raised section of this
photo - http://www.dalesplace.com/images/chevelle/backseat1.jpg

Title: Message

In the case of the 67 where the socket has to be pulled out
to remove the bulb as opposed to removing a lens to get to the bulb,
these would have to be no larger in diameter than the 1157 bulb itself to fit
back into the tail lamp housing.  On a 67 you can't get to the bulb by
removing the lens.  Summit lists these for $40.00 each (for 80221)and
$13.70 (for the smaller 80220) they're both on backorder.

On cars that you remove the lens to replace the bulb, these
would certainly be simply to install although the larger one w/32 LEDs
is about the same total price.

[Chevelle-List] Coolflex radiator hoses

2002-09-08 Thread 396guy

Anyone ever use these on a big block? I have a standard 1 1/2" top hose and
1 3/4" bottom hose. Coolflex recommends one 2" coupler and one 2" adapter
with 1 3/4" reducer for the lower hose. Why the 2"? Both the lower water
pump hose and lower radiator hose connections are 1 3/4" aren't they?

Both those colors were available in 71 but I don't know if
you could order the specific combination.  Have to check the trim tag to
see if it was factory or not.  Would have 61 (Sandalwood) and 62 (Burnt
Orange) codes.

2002-09-08 Thread 396guy
Title: Message

  Dale,

  Nice
write-up and pictures.  From their website, it looks like you can tell
that there is an LED array when the lights are lit, but from your pictures it
looks just like the regular bulb.  So, when you look at your car with the
  LED array, can you tell?

  The
pictures didn't do the installation justice but I wasn't about to reinstall
the bulbs for a fairer test :*).  The LEDs are brighter and give a
~fuller~ light as opposed to the ~single spot~ of the bulb.  I've been
told they are easier to see when being followed in the rain as
well.  Not being in the trailing car however, I can't vouch for it,
  just what I was told.

  If I were
to install these, it would be a lot more expensive than the $90!  Since
you have to remove the housing and loosen the bumper, it would make sense
to replace the nasty looking parts.  First, I would need new bezels
($150), then my lenses would look like crap ($40), and I would need gaskets
($9).  Assuming I could stop there, I would end up with almost $300 just
to replace $1 in light bulbs!

  Isn't
that the way it always happens?
  LOL!

  But I do
see the need for these.  Before I had my car painted, people would
complain and tell me how dim my brake lights were.  I tried the brighter
bulbs, but they did not last long and were a pain to replace every few
months.  So, I added a 3rd brake light in the molding above the rear
window.  I'll have to take a picture of this to better explain, but it is
not at all apparent that the LED bar is there until I step on the
brakes.  The shop also fixed up the reflectors and now I have great
  visibility.

I've had a third brake light for some time. Originally I
had a $19.95 special from AutoZone.  When I had the interior done a
couple of years ago, I had an LED unit installed in the console unit that goes
up and over the package tray.  I don't have any pictures of it
specifically, but it's in the raised section of this photo - http://www.dalesplace.com/images/chevelle/backseat1.jpg

I had Spectre hose covers for a while and they do look
kinda cheezy IMHO.  Never could get them to fit at the ends (always frayed)
and they looked kinda dull after a short while.  A nice set of chrome
(or red or blue) clamp covers look good on a clean, black
hose.

I put a set of these in my 67 Chevelle a few months ago
as a ~test~ subject for these guys.  You have to remove the tail lamp
housing to remove the bezel and finally the lens.  The LEDs mount
to the outside (not though a plug in socket like the bulb) via a simple
3/16" stud and grommet arrangement.  I have some very ~unscientific~
before and after pictures in my blacked out garage for comparison, and steps
on what it took to install them in my car at my "dalesplace" link
below.  On the home page is a link to LED Tailight
Installation.  The pictures are not conclusive to view but the
lamps are much brighter especially in the sunlight.

I don't think a direct replacement is possible due to the size of the single
bulb compared to the size required for an LED array. Third brake lights are
available in LED as well as regular lamp form that will fit on the package
tray. A plug in connecter (like a trailer hitch) would make it removable
but I'd leave it there. I've had one on my 67 for quite a few years - a
very good investment.

RE: [Chevelle-List] 67 Chevelle vs. El Camino frame

2002-09-05 Thread 396guy

Well, according to GM's publications, in 1967 all Chevelles
had the same wheelbase of 115".  The convertible and Elky had boxed frames,
the convertible had 14 mounting points, station wagons had 12, and all others
had 10.  This is according to a September, 1966 publication of 1967
Chevelle chassis specs.

You may be thinking of 68-72 years.  In 1969/70, which
I have GM specs for, show the 2-door sport coupes and convertibles had 112"
and 4-door cars, wagons, and Elkys had 116".

RE: [Chevelle-List] Vacuum problem?

2002-09-04 Thread 396guy

Craig,

I assumed the cowl vent was open all the time and
not shut all the time; although the poster didn't specify which.  May
be a bad assumption on my part (?)  Being open all the
time would be an indication of no manifold vacuum at the valve to close it
under normal driving conditions or when at idle. I don't know the vacuum hose
routing from the flapper valve but the line may be pinched or the valve is
bad.  Since you would normally have 14-18 inches of vacuum at idle, that
should be more than enough to close the flapper valve.  I would assume it
opens at somewhere between 5 and 10 inches of vacuum when you nail
it.

Whether this has anything to do with the carb secondaries I
would doubt since they're operated at the carb via the spring - unless the carb
has recently been rebuilt and not put back together properly but I think they're
be a sucking sound you could definitely hear.  Unless you can feel when the
secondaries open under a load at WOT, I don't think you'll see them open just
winging the engine while you're watching it.  And I sure hope you're not
testing it like two guys I read about that got stopped in a car with the hood
off.  One guy was sitting in the engine compartment to verify the
secondaries were opening while the driver was hauling a$$ down the
road!

  Dale, that's
what I've always thought but I think the cowl induction system works manifold
vacuum drops - as in when the throttle is punched wide open. My understanding
is that vacuum is what keeps the cowl closed - that's why is snaps open when
you turn off the motor. I am not a mechanic and could be wrong about all this
  - but the logic of the system seems to indicate this is how it should
  work.

  issue..
  All,

  I have a 65 Chevelle 4 door wagon and have a
question regarding the way the car sits. The body of the car is sitting about
a half a inch to the passenger side. The tires are really wide and barely fit
under the car. The car only rubs when making left turns. The car is setup with
Airbag suspension and I am not sure how to determine what the problem would
be. If you look at the body mounts you can see that the bolts aren't straight.
Just curious if anyone has any suggestions as to where the problem could
  be..

RE: [Chevelle-List] leaded or unleaded fuel

2002-08-30 Thread 396guy

I ran my (now sold) 74 Vette with unleaded for a year, I'm running my 67
Elky on unleaded and I ran my 396 on unleaded for 14 years. I too have
heard that due to the heat/cool cycle you probably won't have any problems
with valve seats. However, when you rebuild the engine you should have
hardened exhaust seats installed. I rebuilt my 396 last winter and had this
done.

As Dan said, check to see if someone has put a catalytic converter on the
exhaust. If that's the case, you HAVE to run unleaded or it'll burn it out
in no time.

RE: [Chevelle-List] '67 327 questions (Camaro SS reference)

2002-08-26 Thread 396guy

Dunno about what was required with the SS package on 67 and 68 Camaros but
my Chilton's shows no less than 8 327's for 67 Camaros (incl a few 210hp
models) and 2 for 68 Camaros as well as various 350's for both years. An
"EA" coded 327 is from a 65-68 Chevelle.

Chilton shows:
67/68 Camaro 327 3 or 4 speed (210hp) "MA"
67 Camaro 327 w/ex. EM (with exhaust emission) "MB"
67/68 Camaro 327 PG. (210hp) "ME"
67 Camaro PG w/ex. EM "MF"
67 Camaro 327/275 3 or 4 spd (275hp) "MK"
67 Camaro 327 3 or 4 spd w/ex. EM "ML"
67 Camaro 327 PG (275hp) "MM"
67 Camaro 327 PG w/ex. EM "MN"

"MS", "MT", "MU" and "MV" were 350 suffix codes for 67/68 Camaros.

The "SS327" text was pulled from the original poster of the question.

I just ordered an alum rad from http://www.streetrodstuff.com/Products/157/.
They're $298 now plus (mine was) $21 shipping and $50 for A/T cooling. A couple
of other folks on Team Chevelle have purchased them and I finally took the
plunge - see http://www.chevelles.com/forum/Forum27/HTML/000460.html.
I talked to Dave Z, one of the owners I think, and we went through the "custom"
configuration on the phone to ensure things were at least ordered
right.

RE: [Chevelle-List] '67 327 questions

2002-08-24 Thread 396guy

Jim,

Actually there was a 275hp and 325hp 327 in '67 - the 325hp being the L79
and the 275hp version being the ~base~ 327. My 67 Elky has the 327/275hp.
There was no 210hp 327 available in 67 Chevelles; there was a 210hp 327 in
the Camaro but it had a "MA" engine suffix code. The SS327 would be a
Camaro since the 67 Chevelle SS specified the 396 minimum (at least in the
US) but the Camaro could be ordered with SS trim and the 327. BTW, the EA
code was used from 65 to 68 327/275 w/o heavy duty clutch in Chevelles.

F-body stuff takes work to install - definitely not a
bolt-in.  Better off sticking with 69-72 A-body cars (Tempest/GTO,
Chevelle, Skylark/Grand Sport, etc.) or getting an aftermarket kit from someone

Maybe not the definitive expert, but Dan Carr has done a
lot of research and if you look at http://www.chevelles.com/shop/ss_ident.html#72,
 "Some early
sales literature implies that an SS-307 was available, but that is probably not
the case since it was contradicted by some mid-year documents."   I'd
bet the 307 never was sold with the SS package, at least one's never surfaced
that I know of.

Dan has some interesting information on the 71 Heavy Chevy
as well.  According to the car in question, the 13417 VIN would be
correct.  The Heavy Chevy was based on the base Chevelle model and not the
Malibu.

Sure is rare! Not too many Burnt Orange Heavy Chevy's came with a blue hood
complete with black stripes. I don't know exactly how "rare" the Heavy
Chevy is but with as much restoration as this one needs I don't think it'd
be worth it. Not even sure if there's $500 worth of parts left - maybe some
core charge value in the engine/trans/etc.

RE: [Chevelle-List] 67 Cowl Tag Help

2002-08-14 Thread 396guy

Donnie,

Wish I knew. I'm finding more strange numbers on '67 trim tags and it
doesn't seem to be plant specific. I saw two '67s at the ACES/MidAmerica
show built at the Kansas plant with numbers beside the dates. I found
another with a "BF" location and can't tell if it's Baltimore or Flint but
it has a six digit number below the paint code as well. See
http://www.team67.com/information/oddities.htm. If anyone knows if these
are plant codes, Fisher codes, etc., I'd like to know as well.

Never used one but I've had a Hurst Comp Plus in my 67 for the past 16 years

Your book matches what GM says. Looks like a foul-up on one or the other;
the trim tag does show beige paint and medium fawn interior - sound right?
Many states' title have the VIN as well. Is it on the title?

The 3904826 is for 66-71 all special high performance big blocks

RE: [Chevelle-List] Headers and spark plug wires

I've had the best luck with 135 degree boots with headers. Some 90's will
fit and some 180's will fit, but I haven't found 8 plugs yet that will work
with all 90's or all 180's. I have found that all 135 degree angles will
work. Personally, I like Taylor wires. They come in the 135 degree boot
and the plug boots are easy to grasp.

RE: [Chevelle-List] Vin #'s

2002-08-13 Thread 396guy

The model series will show if it was V8 or 6 but not what size V8 or 6.
Example for a base '64 Elky, 45380 was a 6-cyl and 45480 was V8 - the Custom
El Camino got a 45580 for a 6-cyl and 45680 for a V-8. The trim tag model
series should match that portion of the VIN.

  Larry,
The path, the road, same thing. Could also mean
the way. The English language apparently has more words than the Spanish

Maybe the arrows are so he'll know which way to push?
Fairly decent looking racer though.  I can tell him it's not a SS simply
from the VIN #13637.  Even the 65 SS V8 had a 138 VIN and the 65 SS 6-cyl
was 137.

RE: [Chevelle-List] Lower front control arms

2002-08-02 Thread 396guy

If you're looking for tubular arms, you might try Fat Man Fabrications at
http://www.fatmanfab.com/. $749 for upper AND lowers (stock width or 3"
narrowed) and in an email to me, they claim a direct bolt on with no
fabrication required. Well, the shop I contacted that had them claimed
that. I told them I simply wanted to unbolt the stock arms and replace
them; no B-body spindles, no turned ball joints, etc.

~~
Simply unbolt the factory ones and bolt up the new
ones.

Thanks, and Have a Great day

Trivia - 5,897 standard V8 Elkys built as opposed to 24,337 Custom V8 Elkys

Custom was ordered about 5 to 1 over the standard edition.

RE: [Chevelle-List] Documenting my '67 Chevelle

2002-08-02 Thread 396guy

Donnie,

Some states' DMV will do a title search and turn up previous owners, some
won't. I'm sure there's a fee involved if they'll do it at all. The
Protect-O-Plate is a good place to start for options the car came with.
Unfortunately, GM here in the states didn't keep good records and from what
they say, those they did have were lost in a warehouse fire years ago.
Heaven (or an old line worker) only knows what the punch card would
indicate.

While I agree with Craig that if it's a Canadian built Chevelle you're in
luck, I disagree to some extent about information compiled at various web
sites. Probably 90% of data I have is regurgitated from (1) a GM Restoration
Kit that shows options, weights, colors, etc and (2) a GM Parts and
Accessories Manual I retrieved from the trash from a Chevrolet dealer I
worked at in 72. The other 10% is gathered from personal observations and
ownership of 5 67 Chevelles and 2 67 El Caminos, plus people here and at
Team Chevelle who have collectively spent more time than I under the hood,
laying on their backs, and confirming options and such from their own
sources. While some have implied that I sneer at restoration types, that's
their forte and I have no qualms about picking their brains for information
to share.

Whoa, Chuck!  "Cognoscente"?  You been reading
Webster's again? :*)  Wow!

Speaking of things in print...the Year One (spring
98) catalog I have shows SS427 flags for 66/67 Chevelles but state,
"427's weren't originally factory-installed in '66 models but it's a common
swap.  For this reason, we're including these emblems
here."

Concerning the Z-16's they state that the prototype was
built in Baltimore on a hardtop chassis and the other 200 (and I quote "all
Z-16s were hardtops") were assembled in Kansas City using the convertible
boxed frame.

Four years ago at least, the "Tech Car" prototype was
owned by and on display at the, then new, Floyd Garrett.

RE: [Chevelle-List] Car Poll...Favorite Year?

2002-07-30 Thread 396guy

Have a point there Chad.  There's a difference between fast
and quick; as in how ~fast~ the car will go and how ~quick~ will it get to a
given speed.  My first 67 SS with a 4.10 gear would run 100/110 and not
have much left.  This was with factory bias ply tires on the
Interstate.  For 7 weekends straight I drove it from Ft. Sill, OK to Kansas
City (900 miles round trip).  Left OK Sat around noon after military
inspection was over and returned on Sun night.  Another 67 I had with
4.56 gears ran the quarter mile in the low 13's right at 105 mph at 5600 in 4th
gear.

Theoretically, my current 67 SS with a 3.07 gear would/could run
147 mph top end at 5600 but would run the same quarter mile probably in the 15's
at less than 100.  So, while it may be faster, it's not
quicker.

Fast?  I never thought that the old muscle cars were "fast",
only "powerful".  My dad told me his 67 chevelle would only go 100
mph,  but it would smoke the tires through first and second, and
chirp in 3rd.  it was a 396.  I heard the 440's were monsterous and
extremely powerful and would beat the 396's...but I don't want to debate
on that, lol.  I dont know if I said this before, but I met a guy at my
grandparent's 50th anniversity a couple days back and he had a 1970 Daytona
Charger with a 440 six pack, and he said that his friend rode with him once
and told him "muscle car, my ass!", so chuck punched it at 20 mph and broke
the tires loose and before you know it, they were on the freeway at 130 mph
and chuck told me his friend was crying, "slow down, slow down".  It was
  a good story.  :)

Being the skeptical and show me the proof type, I got
involved with a thread on Team Chevelle.  http://www.chevelles.com/forum/Forum29/HTML/001832.html
The Popular Mechanics web site (http://popularmechanics.com/automotive/sub_coll_vintage/1999/4/65_chevelle/)
said one was built for Bunkie Knudsen although GM claims ALL were hardtops and
only 200 of those made.  Anyway, the TC thread has a gentleman who claimed
to have owned the car and bought it used through the GM Tech Center and was
triple Gold and not Red, Black or Yellow.  No dealer records, no insurance
records, no state vehicle registration records exist so far.  Like FOX
News, I just report it, you decide.

The Z-16 conv. myth has been circulating for
along time. I veiw it the same as Big Foot. They my have fabed up one in the
engineering/reaserch dept. just like they did a 4 wheel drive El-Camino. but
the only thing the 4X4 El-Camino saw was the big blue torch. Being the Z-16
conv has not sown up in 37 years ,  I am willling to bet dollars to
dounuts,  that if they proto-typed a 65 BB Z-16 type conv it meet
  the same  scrap heap fate

Unfortunately it's not on the ones you send though
Larry.  In fact, sometimes it's difficult to understand who or what you're
replying to sometimes as there is no thread. :*)

In regards to the possibility of a '65 Z-16
convertible ever existing, I remember reading a letter that was sent in to the
read forum of one of the many magazines that I subscribe to.  The
letter asked if there was ever a "...160 mph speedometer that was factory
installed in a '65 Chevelle ?  The letter went on to say "The
reason I ask is that about six months ago while looking through a junkyard, I
came across a '65 Chevelle convertible and I noticed it had a 160 mph
speedometer."  The editor's response was that there was supposedly
one '65 Chevelle Z-16 convertible built, but not found.  And that Mark
Meekins (spelling ?) from the National Chevelle Owners Association would be in
contact with the author of the letter.
That letter was written a number of years ago.
And I have never heard another word about it.  Perhaps it was a dead end
?  Just thought I would share that story for those who have not heard
  about it.
