[Chevelle-list] Surging HELP!!

2010-04-03 Thread Dave Benjamin
I was playing with my Beaumont Thursday from a stop light. After it started
surging will idle fine but if I hold at 1500rpm it surges 3000 to nothing back
and forth. I think it must be carb. I did change fuel filter and pump but no
change.

Is carb problem ease fix?

I was going to change carb and I already have one here, but when I checked
numbers it is a 17080212. 1980 454 BB. Can I still use it on my 350?

Thank you for any help.

Boys and girls,

Speaking from the industrial side of things, rubber has a shelf life of 5
years, period. Why? Because it is too costly to shut down processes to replace
premutarely failed product. When it comes to suppling a customer with a gasket,
O-ring, diaphragm, expansion joints, etc., we take a strong look at when
product is produced. Many gasket sheets, for instance will have a stamp like
3Q05; meaning it was manufactured in the third quarter of 2005. Another
important consideration is how long has it sat on a distributors shelf before
being sold. Of course, there are other factors to be considered such as
environment, packaging, how it was stored, etc. but these don't come into play
with tires.

How can I say this with out sounding ugly; Dan Z. from the Rubber
Manufacturers Assoc. is a liar! He seals his fate when he states ...without
any scientific information to back it up. Bull Sh!t. He knows good and damn
well, if he can read, that there is a shelf life associated with rubber. If he
is not informed, why is he the spokesperson for this organization? Just someone
else out there trying to cover up! and pr otect, in my humble, but informed,
opinion.

Just some thoughts from the other side of things,

Rich

Manual drum brakes were standard equipment with both power brakes and power
disc brakes as options. If you are converting to power brakes (you say you
need to order a booster) why not consider power disc brakes? Many companies
offer excellent disc brake conversions. Do a Google search for disc brake
conversions and you'll see a number of good companies such as Master Power
Brakes, Stainless Steel Power Brakes, Inline Tube, etc. and priced from
$900-$1100 in most cases and contain all parts (lines, booster, etc.) necessary.

Re: [Chevelle-list] fuel guage test

2008-05-10 Thread Dave Benjamin
I had that problem with my car ounce. If you undo the connector in the trunk or
just behind the bumper and attach it to ground you should see gas gauge move if
it is working. They supply the gas gauge with + and the wire going to the tank
is -. It is variable resistor the more fuel you have the more your gas gauge
reads (better ground from the tank).

Just specifying 15 tires isn't enough; you need the size and aspect ratio.
Try the calculator at http://www.chevellestuff.com/tools/rpm_calculator.htm to
give you an RPM range for a given tire size, rear end gear, and transmission.

FWIW, when I went from a 4-speed to 700R4 I don't remember anything having to
do with wiring, only the correct cable for the kickdown. But then, I had mine
done at Phoenix Transmission in Texas; drove in w/4-speed, drove out with 700R4.

[Chevelle-list] 700R4 shifting

2007-09-27 Thread Dave Benjamin
I just picked up a 700R4 to replace my 350 Turbo in my 1968 Beaumont. Currently
RPM too high on highways. Is there any way to get a 2spd column to shift all
the gears. It can just do the 3spd now, but 1st is hard to get.

Thank you for all input. Also found the shifter cable thread handy.

Taking time to beat on the classics.

  Subject: [Chevelle-list] Fender-Door Gap Adjustment

I'm finally getting round to try to even out the door to fender gap on my
72 elky. Both sides are equally bad, a good gap at the bottom then widen
out significantly at the top. I believe that the doors are hung straight
because the door to rear quarter panels have an even gap. Pictures are at
link below.

  http://www.flickr.com/photos/[EMAIL PROTECTED]/sets/72157601417827062/

It appears to me that the same adjustment is out of whack on both sides, but
which one?I've never messed with the panels so want to get some advice
before I loosen the fenders.

Is it possible that frame sag is pulling the front of both fenders in? The
body core support bushings were replaced with poly about 10 years ago.
Honestly I don't remember if I had the problem before it was painted (years ago
also). Painter did take the fenders doors offback then.
  thank you.

Re: [Chevelle-list] reupholster?

2007-08-11 Thread Dave Benjamin
I have done a few Different years in chevelle seats. You will need original
foam to get the right look. I have added padding or thin foam to get rid of the
concave mark your but leaves in the seats over the years and it makes the
covers nice and tight looking. I just did buckets with new foam for a friend
and they looked nice when done.

There are some pics on my web site of differant ones I have done in the past.

Good luck

Pelle- Having done a few seats over the years, more than I’d like, unless
you’re after a custom look, you’ll likely need to buy the appropriate foam for
your Chevelle. This has the rope- like material that you will have to attach
the hog rings to in order for it to have the proper shape. Hopefully somebody
will have better input for you as well. I’m not an upholsterer, just a guy who
works on his own cars.

  Hi!

  A few Q:s

I'm in the progress of reupholstering the back seat.

Allt that is left of the old back seat is the bare metal base and springs,
due to rats and mould!

  Do I proceed like this

  1. First I need a layer of fabric or jute to protect the foam against the
springs I guess.

  2. Then there's a layer of foam? How thick should the foam layer be?

Any more layers on top of the foam except the new cover?

  3. Then I attach the hog rings!

  Best regards

Re: [Chevelle-list] LOST KEYS

I have had keys made by using the door lock. The lock is coded and any lock
smith can make it from the code. I think door lock is the same as ignition
on 1966. It cost me like $10.00 cdn to have one done. Trunk lock should have
code also.

You should always know the codes for your keys. There is a chart in the
Fisher Body Manual that you can lay a key (or a paper copy of a key)
against and it will tell you the codes for your locks. Just for fun I did
this w/ a guy who I knew at an Olds dealership in PA. I emailed him the
codes from my 1968 Olds keys and he made me a new set w/o ever seeing the
originals. The new keys worked fine. Pretty cool.

I just installed a Tremec 5 speed into my 68 SS. I switched
from a TH 400. The problem That I have now is bad wheel hop.
I never had it with the 400. I have boxed my lower control
arms and installed urethane bushings. Plus I have airlift
drag bags in my coils and Monroe coil shocks. I'm thinking
that I might have to get a set of traction bars, but I don't
want to loose the stock look. Have any of you guys used
traction bars or adjustable upper control arms to fix a
problem like this? The only thing that I can think of, that
might have changed in this switch over is the pinion angle.
Thanks ahead of time for any helpDennis

I believe if your only engaging a small part of the gear you need to
shim it closer to the flywheel. You'll wear out the bendix gear and get

 Ben,

I have a console that I bought used, but never installed it in my 65
SS. I bought the console and other parts to convert my 65 SS from an
automatic. They were purchased from Chevy Sports in Rancho Cordova by
Sacramento CA. I called to see if they had a console, and he said no.
He said they are pretty rare and that no after-market is available yet.
He said they are worth about $800. if you can find one. If you are
still interested, I will send a pics and talk price. I also have a
4-speed and original linkage. The 4 speed worked very well, but it
needs a second gear sincro - it shifts great up in all gears but I had
to double clutch to shift down to second gear. I never used the linkage
 - bought new Hurst. I went to a Richmond 5 sp in 92 - so the 5 sp has
been sitting in the garage for a while. I will give you more detail if
 you are interested.

[Chevelle-list] Bad Long week end

2005-07-03 Thread Dave Benjamin

The Beaumont Takes
One

We went for a nice little cruise Friday and when I
was coming back into town a Mini Van was stopped ready to make a left turn in
front of me. For some reason she decided to try to make it and I was too close
and couldn't get it stopped in time. Everyone is fine. I am thankful we were in
the Beaumont and not our little Honda. They do take a good hit. She was charged
but now I have to get the hot rod fixed. It doesn't look to bad in the pictures
but it needs a bunch of work now.

I am now looking for some parts. Any help is
appreciated.

[Chevelle-list] Saved another 1

2005-06-04 Thread Dave Benjamin

I saved another chevelle from the crusher. Almost
heard about it too late. Tires were off gas tank out ready to go on the pile. It
will be excellent partsfor my other cars. Too bad I can't use the doors,
there is no rust on them. It even has the factory clock.

Do they use the same frame for the 2 and 4 door
cars??

I’ve tried all the forums I can
think of so on the off chance someone on here
  knows….

I have a mystery connection in my
85 camaro, it’s a female connection under the middle console. Can’t
figure out what it’s for and the wiring diagrams don’t show it (or at least I
can’t find it in the ones I’ve checked).

I think it could be for a
passenger power seat (which I don’t have). The driver’s side is power so
maybe they just include the other connection.

I didn't powder coat it I painted it with
Flat black epoxy. Three coats and it almost looks factory.

With the manual set up I used pedal from an
1986 trans Am (Borg Warner 5spd)and the hydraulic set up. The pedal part went
pretty good(Same main bolt size and I cut down the 69's brakepedal to fit
the 86 rubber pedal cover)but getting the hydraulic unit set up on the
right angle to get full stroke was a real job.

Some of the key tumblers you insert the key

  Hello

Does anyone know how to dismantle a 1968 Chevelle
ignition switch. I didn't disassemble the dash, but have to put it back
together. If you know what I'm talking about then you know that it is
surrounded by a chrome plastic bezel that threads onto the switch housing. I
won't go over the stainless part where you insert the key, so I suppose
youhave to remove the switch and then slide it back inonce the
housing is attached to the bezel, sort of like how the glove box assembly
works. Not sure if I'm off base on this one, but can anyone help.

Basically, yes (IMO) but actually no. The U.s.
built Super Sport was built on the same basic body and chassis but in 66, 67
and 68 theSuper Sport was a separate model from the Malibu (138xx VIN as
opposed to the Malibu (135/6xxx VIN); the same way the Malibu was a separate
model from the 300 and 300 Deluxe. The Malibu could be had with a 6-cyl
or a V8 (283 or 327) where theSuper Sportcame with the 396 engine
  as standard equipment.

The Super Sport (also referred to in GM literature as the
SS396 model)carried no Malibu script or badges but many state's DMVs
still classified it as a 'Malibu' or simply a Chevelle.

Canada DID produce a Malibu SS model that was simply an
option on the Malibu and basically consisted of theRPO A51 Sports
Option (bucket seats)but did include 'Malibu SS' badging and could be
had with any engine, except maybe the 396 (not sure). I have photos of a
  66 Malibu SS with a 230 6-cyl and a 67 Malibu SS with a 283. See http://www.chevellestuff.com/67stuff/gallery/supersport/mel_anderson.htmfor

Basically, yes (IMO) but actually no. The U.s.
built Super Sport was built on the same basic body and chassis but in 66, 67
and 68 theSuper Sport was a separate model from the Malibu (138xx VIN
as opposed to the Malibu (135/6xxx VIN); the same way the Malibu was a
separate model from the 300 and 300 Deluxe. The Malibu could be had
with a 6-cyl or a V8 (283 or 327) where theSuper Sportcame with
the 396 engine as standard equipment.

The Super Sport (also referred to in GM literature as
the SS396 model)carried no Malibu script or badges but many state's
DMVs still classified it as a 'Malibu' or simply a
Chevelle.

Canada DID produce a Malibu SS model that was simply an
option on the Malibu and basically consisted of theRPO A51
Sports Option (bucket seats)but did include 'Malibu SS' badging and
could be had with any engine, except maybe the 396 (not sure). I have
photos of a 66 Malibu SS with a 230 6-cyl and a 67 Malibu SS with a 283. See
http://www.chevellestuff.com/67stuff/gallery/supersport/mel_anderson.htmfor
documentation on the 67 Malibu Super Sport w/a 283 2-bbl engine and http://www.chevellestuff.com/66velle/gallery/malibu_ss.htmfor
the 6-cyl Malibu SS.

I was at a cruise last weekend and this guy had a sweet camero 67 there
abouts. I watched the guy use an aerosol spray can to clean the windshield
with some foam stuff. The part I didn't like is he sprayed the window then
sat the can on the beautifully painted hood (twice). That doesn't strike me
as some one that built the car but only bought the car.

My two cents.

Not that many of you really care, but I wanted to share. I entered my
first
show this past weekend. There weren't any prizes or places given out, so
I
guess it was more of a display. I figured I'd be kinda out of place, but
after arriving and getting my baby set up, I felt right at home next to
some
of the other classics. It was great to have other enthusiasts and several
hundred people ogle over my Chevelle. What a great feeling. I guess this
 is what it's all about!

By the way, for those that may be wondering, I managed to get that back
seat
out, and install the seatbelts so the whole family could attend! Good
 times!

It is a '71 Malibu red with black int. It has 78k original miles . 350/350
with 2bbl. Engine code AP. Car runs great, tranny is great. 10 bolt rear,
not sure of ratio. Am waiting for previous owner to mail me the build
sheet/owners manual etc. The body is in good shape except for the rear
quaters and floor pans. Never wrecked or modified from original
configuration. Can't wait to start on resto. I guess the first thing to
work
on would be the manual drums up front. Brakes work well, just not like I
would want them to. I have always owned/worked on Chevy trucks, this is
the
first car I've ever owned. Hopefully 20 years of truck work will help on
my
chevelle. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

We can not figure out exactly where the water is coming in but if it rains
or we wash the car there is about 3 inches of water in the floorboard. We
have taken the heater box out and siliconed it and it is still pouring the
water in. We want to put the carpet in and do the finishing touches so

we can drive the car but until we stop the water we are at a standstill.
We

Try a smaller WP pulley. Just think of a 10-speed bike. It will make your
fan turn at a higher RPM.

Unless you live in a hot climate (which you don't) a 180 thermostat is
fine
for the street. However, if your cooling system currently is at 210 the
thermostat alone won't fix it; it'll open earlier (do you have a 195 in
there now?) and slow the temperature ascent but eventually it'll still
reach
 210. Have you verified that this 210 reading is accurate? Factory gauge
or
aftermarket? How old is the sending unit? GM gauges work based on
resistance and if you can locate the resistance scale for your car (a
factory service manual might contain it) you can use a combination of
resistors to check the accuracy of the gauge.

A fan shroud always helps with a mechanical fan but I don't know if '66s
came with one from the factory or what your feeling is regarding the
addition of one. I personally like fixed-blade fans used in conjuction
with
 thermal clutches.

The radiator isn't very old, is it? How long has it been since the
system's
 been flushed?

 Brad O.

I just ordered a Be Cool 180 degree thermostat for my '66 327 from
Jeg's,
 and had a
question about it- They also offered a 160 degree model. I spoke
 w/another car
enthusiast, and they advised to stick with the 180 thermostat, as the
160
 might impact
how well the heater performs in the Winter. Can anyone provide any
 feedback on the 2
options, and will this definitely help my motor run cooler? She
currently
 runs a
constant 210. I wanted to see what options I had without having to
 install an electric
  fan just yet..

  Thanks!
