[Chevelle-List] Chevelleabration 2004 Attn: Chuck Hanson

2003-06-18 Thread Dwight Fulton

Hi Chuck, My wife ( Shes the one that caught you changing clothes) has a suggestion for CB04: During the awards ceremony she suggests that you have a slide show or video presentation of the winning cars as you anounce them. It's impossible to know if the car you voted for won unless you know the owner. Just our .02
CB03 was great and know 04 will be better.

 Gents,
for those of you that have sand blasting units at your house. Do
you
ever have problems with the media not coming out through the hose? I am
using glass bead and don't have that much time on it, but I can get it to
work for a few seconds then it stops spraying media, only air comes out or
very little media. I often have to shake the table top unit to get the
media
to fill back down in the bottom as well.

I have a craftsman air dryer at the tank, but maybe the humidity is
causing
some of it to be sticky? It will sometimes develop a small hole in the
media pile near the end of the suction tube instead of caving and filling
back in. I'd really like to be able to use this thing and haven't got that
much use out of it yet. Might I need to change media already? Should I put
another air dryer on the line?

 Thanks!
   Steve

Re: [Chevelle-List] EFI on old motors

2003-02-07 Thread Dwight Fulton

EFI in no way will put "undue stress" on the engine or make it run hotter but, it will make it run smoother more efficently which tranlates into lower emissions and in most cases better MPG. The setup is costly and can be a hassle getting tuned in correctly but, you are rewarded with a very dependable, driveable and low maintence engine.

Hey all,

I have a friend that has an 80 Vette and he wants to add an after market EFI
on his motor.
His dad is trying to talk him out of it. He says that the EFI will burn
hotter and put undo stress on the motor.
I think he is way off base here. But I thought I would ask the expert panel
and see what you all think.
I think he will be much happier with an EFI. And get even better performance
out of it.

What is the consensus of the Chevelle community when it comes to clones? I
have a 66 Malibu that will have an SS hood and the SS paint scheme in the
rear. I will leave Malibu on the sides and not sure what I will put in
front of the blacked out grill. It will have a fuel injected 327 so I will
use the 327 flags on the front fenders.
In your opinion is this considered bad taste? Of course you can do anything
you want to your car, but the Corvette community seems to shake their head
at anything but factory looks. (You wouldn't put a Z06 emblem on a '63 if it
really wasn't) Just don't want to be an 'outcast' !!!

Hi Dwight,
In 22 years of collecting and selling vintage wheels I have seen one 15 x 7 wheel by this manufacturer EVER. You have to realize the one I have was probably a dispay wheel. I say this because of the time frame these wheels were made. 1963-66. Even the Corvettes only have 6" rims when the cars were made. Your vintage manufactuerers didn't start building wider until wheel well started to open up in 1969.
So to answer your question I have one wheel in 15 x 7. I do have a set of 15 x 6's. They have been repolished and repainted and have nice used (repolished) aluminum center caps installed on them for $2500.
I will sell the single wheel but it is the Drag Mag with the window in the spoke for $300.

I tried holley and they say they don't sell to the public so I tried Jegs and they have the part number is in their computer but it says not avaible from holley anymore. The part number is 34r1993. With out this part the gas in the back bowl drains into the intake when I shut off the car. I'm afraid if this keeps up very long it will wipe out my engine. I bought this used and the plate wasn't in it. Couldn't figure out why gas kept running in the intake. Looked at an exploded view and there it was. Any ideas? Thanks,Vernon

Re: [Chevelle-List] parts

2003-01-31 Thread Dwight Fulton

Rocker panels are pretty straight forward they go on pretty much as they come off but, door skins are a different story and can be tough to put on without damage unless you've done it B-4. I would suggest you get someone that's done it to help you. I am not trying to imply that you can't do it it's just tricky getting the flange bent back over the door frame without damaging the skin. Also you must take care in aligning the skin on the door frame in the right place B-4 welding so when you hang the door you can align it with the fender and quarter. I would suggest you get the flange folded back over the door frame not weld it then hang the door so you can align the skin with the quarter panel fenderand then tack weld in place then remove and finish welding. This way you can be assured that everything lines up.

Just an FYI. I found a new supplier for bucket seat foam sets and unlike my
previous supplier (who always seemed to have them on backorder), they list
separate sets for 1966-69 and 1970-72. They say that the hog ring locations
are different for each of these year ranges even though the overall shape of
the foam is the same, and that these foams will be a better fit than the
ones that are supposed to fit all of those years because the hog ring
indentations are in the right places.

Anyway, just passing along the info that there seems to be a source for more
accurate reproduction foam sets (they are also more expensive, so I will
continue to carry the others for the price-conscious, just remember to order
early because they are always backed up).

I
owned a 65 Corvair Monza convertible a lot of years ago. It had 4 one barrel
carbs a 4 speed. I wish I still had it! It was a pretty good car. The
early ones had a lot of problems but by 65/66 they had worked a lot of the
bugs out of them. I bought mine used (but in excellent condition) for $800.
It would be worth about $10,000 today.

To be honest, I welcome any RWD offering from GM as long as it's RWD V8 powered. What they call it doesn't matter. How it performs does. Calling this "Aussy" a GTO is one thing but, it will never be a GOAT. Same goes for GM producing a new"Chevelle", it will never compare to a SS396 or SS454.

I believe that if the General would bring back the 70-72 Chevelle body
style( with a few updates ) and put "New Technology" in them as: LS1, overdrive
trannys, Modern engine management systems i.e.: MPG's. They would sell the H
out of them. I'd beat a path to my local Chevy dealer.

what. If you had your choice(you didn't) between a two door,V8,RWD SSE and the

The fastest, safest and best way to strip a car is acid dip. It will cost about the same as media blasting. Maybe a little more. They don't use sand. Sandblasting is one of those universal words everyone uses to describe what they want done. They do sandblast the frame, I'll get mine done this spring. Acid dipping will get in every nook and cranny and remove EVERYTHING. Rust, grease, paint, sealer, etc. But you get back virgin looking steel. They bake it in an oven to melt and loosen everything then dip it and then it is run through a neutralizing bath. Just had mine done and I couldn't be happier with it. The solid floors I thought I had.. well their not so solid. I have to replace two small sections in front. Right where the air conditioner was. I had a Mustang media blasted once and it turned out to be a nightmare. It will punch holes in weaker metal even if there are no holes there now.

Craft-O-Matic Adjustable Subscription Cancellation Unit. The unit
can be
obtained from most hardware stores and dental clinics.
Be sure to obtain the proper permits to operate the unit from the
Nuclear Regulatory Commission and the Food and Drug Administration
in
Washington D.C. USA.
Be sure to carefully unpack the kit and place each component in its
accompanying mesh safety bag.
Mount the Pershing DF4 mesinator on top of the perforated Gerring
Mach
77 refibulator and attach them using the eight-millimeter torque
fork.
Be sure that the refibulator is mounted at a 66 degree angle and
properly dispersed so that it is flush with the curved section of
the
Pyrex thistle tube.
Place the four sections of the triangular separation gear into the
posture cylinder and lock them into place using the band aid
adhesive strip.
Insert the wiggling pin into the wobbling hole, making sure that it
seated correctly.
Place the D cell battery and the eleven 9 volt batteries in the
power
chamber.
The device should be calibrated before operation using the optional
digital corkscrew accessory pack prior to operation.
Insert the digital corkscrew through the electronic combustion
service
chamber using caution not to touch the reinforced tungsten igniter
control module and quickly turn the inverter drive to 28.6 degrees.
Turn the Craft-O-Matic Adjustable Subscription Cancellation Unit
upside
down and hit the bottom plate with a 48-ounce ball-peen hammer while
shaking the unit vigorously.
Force open the door to the incineration valve compartment and set
the
pressure gauge to 719 psi.
Close the door and seal it shut with duct tape.
The unit should now be properly calibrated and ready to use.
Before activating the Craft-O-Matic Adjustable Subscription
Cancellation Unit, you must first elevate it to a height of 229 feet
above sea level to insure that the unit receives the proper oxygen
level
and barometric pressure.
Point the aerial to 17 degrees north by northeast to within the
parameters of the Telstar GS-2 weather satellite and apply pressure
to
the wing shaft on the southern most section of the modular
accelerator.
Using the special ratchet adapter supplied with the unit, rotate the
heater core to the "on" position. The "on" position has been
obtained
when the green light begins to flash, signifying that the red light
is
about to go off.
Once the red light is off, flip the toggle switch labeled "ON/OFF"
to
the "ON" position and count to 47 before logging on to the system.
Logon using your username and password and wait for the prompt.
Once prompted you must check the box with the appropriate action you
wish to take and then press the pressure release button and turn off
the
compressor while turning the hand crank at 231 meters per minute.
Next, press control, alt, delete, caps lock, shift, number lock,
escape
and tab simultaneously.
Press enter. You will have one second to complete the procedure.

Heya Dwight... I can't speak from experience as far as the El Camino goes, but I can say that yes-- mirrors can be fitted from another car.. Specifically I know as of a few years ago Classic Industries (the Camaro people) had NOS bullet mirrors for their 70-72 f-bodies... They looked pretty identical to the bullet mirrors on my Chevelle... I know for a fact my driver's side bullet mirror is original to the car (paint was a 100% match)... However, the passenger side was blue underneath where it mounts to the door and way behind the mirrored glass.. Given my car's ...questionable... heritage (read: some unsavory characters have owned my car!) I'd assume the passenger mirror did NOT come off a 71/72 Chevelle :) I know they were popular all throughout the 70's and 80's... A pretty easy retrofit..

Raj

...PS Just remember to drill your holes in the right area.. heheh.. The driver's door I scored at the junkyard for my car had the regular square chrome mirror and my paint and body guy totally drilled in the wrong spot for my bullet mirror.. hehe.. He drilled where the old chrome mirror mounted forgetting that the bullet mirrors mounted down a bit farther to compensate for their size/shape... heheh.. He was angry to say the leasy :)

Bullet mirrors were on option on 72 Chevelles. Not 100% sure on 71 but I think they were an option as well. Usually the bullet mirror came in driver-side only configurations with dealerships adding the passenger side.

From my Chevelle Restoration Guide:

"For 1971 and 1972... However custom bullet mirrors, RPO D35, were available for these two years. With the SS package the driver's side mirror was remote control and was listed as part number 9878201. the body of the mirror was painted to match the color of the car. This option is not well known and is fairly rare. It was available only as a factory-installed option."

If you're not too concerned with originality, check the wreckers for
'80s bullet mirrors. They have a gasket between the body and the
mirror which was body-specific. I got a pair from a Caprice that,
when bolted to my 67, were not level. However, a pair of gaskets
from a Monte Carlo were just the ticket.

One of the body guys I know always uses body panel adhesive to install
1/4's
and other exterior patches. He cuts out the panel to be replaced...uses
a
panel crimper to form a step...fits secures the patch with adhesive 1
or
2 tapping screws. Once the adhesive is dry, remove the screws, and all
you
need is a skin of filler. No heat warpage, adhesive seals the lap joint
so
it can't hold water, no grinding welds. It works for him.

I don't know if he would use it on floorpans, though.

I really didn't mean to go ballistic either but, panel adhesive isn't
designed to be a stand alone product. It was developed to aid in panel
alignment and to stop or at least help deter Panel Walk during welding.
It should never be used by itself and the panel or patch never welded.

 Absolutely correct!!

Sorry guys, I was WAY too vague about floor pans! I think in no way
shape
or form should panel adhesive be used for floor pans. I would never use
it
for any car floor pan. That's a structure point. Absolutely NOT
acceptable
for that application. It does make a good patching technique for an
exterior panel, but that is as far as it goes.

My comment, I don't know if he would use it on floorpans, though. , was
not supposed to suggest that it could ever be an acceptable alternative to
proper welding and sealing of the floor panels, just a comment I should
not
 have typed.

You have my apologies for the confusion.

I just called one of the sheet metal manufacturers and was told that the
full quarter panels (not skins) for the 69 Chevelle are expected to be
available by next spring. Keep your eyes peeled as they say.

Makes me wonder where they get the cars that they test-fit these things

I wonder if they take volunteers, or if they just go to some junkyard and
buy a car for that purpose. It's probably the latter.

I have been doing bodywork for almost 30 yrs. now and in my experience
there are no perfect panels. Even new sheetmetal from the Big 3 has to have some
rework done on it before it's perfect. The thing to remember is you get what you
pay for. If your buying 1/4's buy the full quarter , they always fit better than
skins but they will still need some massaging to fit.
Patch Panels are the worst, Partial skins are better, Full skinsare
even better Full Panels are even better FactoryNOS is

You are correct Auburn can't be rebuilt is uses cones not clutch discs.

Eaton can be rebuilt but uses clutches. I went with the auburn the shop
that
 put mine together
said that all he has ever used and never had a problem with one. Either
one
 is a good choice

If anyone needs an Eaton posi I have a 10 bolt 8.5 brand new in box with
new
 bearing kit.

[Chevelle-List] Response to Open Letter

2002-10-21 Thread Dwight Fulton
Folks I was gone on the weekend so didn't respond to any emails so I just read everything this morning.

Steve, I really understand where your coming from and agree whole heartedly I appriciate your zeal but, I believe we should concentrate our efforts on Tri-Sate Chevelles 1st and formost. If we!
turn our attention to other projects B-4 the club is on solid ground we will accomplish nothing and the club will suffer and disappear.

Please don't take this in the wrong light, I'm with you all the way. I just want to make sure that the club is on the front burner with everyone so we stay focused and on task.

I am looking forward tomeeting you on the 27th and seeing your excitementfor your hobby in action.

Re: [Chevelle-List] Coil Spring Recommendations, Door Skin Removal

2002-10-16 Thread Dwight Fulton

Dave, It's impossible to remove door skins then replace the same skins as they are welded on and could not be removed without inflecting major damage to them. If you only have small dents dings remove the door panels window regulator glass, them repair the damage.

  Hey!

I'm looking for a pair of front coils for a 67, with a slightly
stiffer-than-stock rate. I currently have a pair that are originally
intended for a big block with air and auto - what I thought would be
the highest stock rate. Anyhow, I'd like to move up a little in
spring rate. Can anyone recommend one aftermarket manufacturer over
another? Dropped coils are okay as well, because I'd be cutting
  stock height ones.

As well, is there an easy way to remove and replace door skins? I
have some dents and dings that would be easy to pound out, if I could
get just the outer skin off the doorframe and have some simple way to
  re-attach it.

  Thanks,
  Dave.

Re: [Chevelle-List] Looking for some parts

2002-09-26 Thread Dwight Fulton
Tim, You can dye your interior parts black with vinyl prep vinyl dye. Many OEM interior parts came to the dealership in one color only ( mostly tan and the bodyshop tech dyed it) If you prep the parts correctly and use good quailty prep dye it will last a long time. On the steering wheel you would be better off replacing it. I also need to repaint some of the metal interior parts like the glove box door, pillars, headliner trim. Does anyone know what color that is? Is it called dark green or Hunter Green or something like that? I tried that interior paint that OPG sells and it sucks. No matter what I did, it would not stick. It kept separating from the metal and leaving circles, almost as if the metal was contaminated with oil or grease. I tried every single cleaner/degreaser I had and still did it. I could not even get any type of primer to stick to it very well. Any suggestions??? [Chevelle-List] New Club

2002-09-25 Thread Dwight Fulton

Steve, I don't make my living doing bodywork anymore. I just work at home
on my cars and help out my friends whenever I can. I have a 2 car garage at
home that I can do anykind of restore work I need to. So thats how I limit
myself to Chevy's. Currently I have the 72 Elkie that I just got started on
I have a 84 Z28 that I bought from the orginal owner it only has 57,000
miles on it. I hope to have the frame of the 72 rebuilt and ready by Dec.
and then start on the bodywork.

If I can be of any assist to anyone out there fell free to let me know. My
knowledge is about 15 - 20 years old as I haven't worked in a dealership
since the mid 80's, but that works out pretty good if your interested in
67-85 Chevys.

I read several emails refering to 10-13 as a meeting date for the new club
but never got ( or saw the orginal about the date??)

Steve, While I can give you no real advice on starting a new club I do want
to encourage you to proceed. I live in Indiana about 40 miles west of
Dayton, OH. and would welcome a club closer to home. Please let me know if I
can help.
PS. The Paddock resto parts supplier is only about 20 miles from me they
might be talked into helping, don't know for sure but it might be worth a
shot.

Subject: [Chevelle-List] New Chevelle club forming in South-West Ohio
Date: Thu, 19 Sep 2002 21:59:35 -0400

Gents,
I am working on starting a new club in Ohio for Cincinatti and
Dayton area Chevelle owners. While there is one club in Ohio already,
it's farther than most of us in South West Ohio ( maybe northern
Kentucky and Southern Indiana?)are willing to drive to attend meetings.
The idea is to only recruit those unwilling/unable to join the current
club in Columbus, and to be brother clubs to include combined
cruise-ins.

I am interested in talking to people that got new clubs off the ground,
learn about club charter, rules, and the good, bad and ugly on
affiliations.

What are the benefits of talking to local businesses to your club? I am
thinking that if we can get discounts for club members and provide
information on what businesses can provide what services this would be a
win-win.

Any other advice and do's and don't 's would be appreciated.

Thanks!
  Steve
