Re: [Chevelle-list] Horrific - keep it on the track

2008-03-02 Thread Karl Groves
This incident happened in PG county, MD. I'm not 100% sure of the location
but I know MIR is just down Rt. 3 a ways from PG county.

To put into perspective, I live near Baltimore and go to MIR, and these
people are AT LEAST 40 minutes closer to MIR than I am.

I heard this story on the news and at that time I was wondering, would
having more available tracks around, would that help with the illegal street

I feel really bad for the families involved and wish them the best after
this unfortunate accident.

currently they take up space in the back corner of my shop, currently there
are 6 of them 2 big blocks and the rest are mice. I'm thinking of getting
one of those little storage sheds to keep them in and free up some space. It

Re: [Chevelle-list] OPG

2008-01-31 Thread Karl Groves
My experience with OPG has been positive, for the most part. I did have a
bit of a customer service headache when I ordered some full length floor
pans which IMO were not full length. The description in the catalog made it
sound like the pans went from toe board to under the back seat and I didn't
know any better. The guy I spoke to when ordering them assured me this was
the case, but when they got here, the pans stopped just in front of the back
seat. Considering that under the seat was one of the worst areas for my
car, I really needed this. I called the same guy and asked him to see if
they had a pan that did go under the seat. He told me the part number of a
part that he knew was a full pan - the same part number I had in my hands!

On a positive note, they did offer to refund my money in full including
shipping (both the return shipping and the original shipping). I ended up
keeping the pans and fabbing the parts I needed under the seats. There was
another order that got messed up shortly after that and that time it was
completely my fault. Nevertheless, they gave me a complete refund on the
parts and ALL shipping.

My favorite OPG experience was I placed an order for several items. Two
weeks later I called to check on a delivery date. The customer service guy
says that it would take another week to get it shipped as they had just got
around to processing the order that day. Seems they had been real busy and
it was taking them two weeks just to process an order. He thought I was
being a jerk for thinking that was an unreasonable amount of time to get the
order in their system. That order took a month to receive and half of the
items were backordered. I still buy an occasional item from them because
they do have things that other companies don't.

but 90% of the I time use Classic Muscle, best on pricing, cost of shipping,

The Flowmaster kit was easy to install on my 70, however, after 6 years and
less than 20K miles, the mufflers blew out on the bottom from moisture
collecting and now they need to be replaced. The pipes themselves are not
in that great of shape either and this is on a car that doesn't go out in

I will say that Pypes has a nice system with the X pipe setup and you can
get it in stainless steel which is a huge bonus in my book. I'm probably

The only thing is, I personally don't really care for the sound of the Pypes

Actually, it seems to me like it's the cars that don't see a lot of
road time and go through cold winters that have more exhaust problems.
Also, a Flowmaster kit is really not expensive considering that for a
few hundred bucks it is a fairly complete kit that you can install
 yourself.

Hey all here is a good one. Not long after I got the 71 the car wouldn't
start I just figured it was the fact the positive end of the soleniod was
loose or the crappy battery terminals, which I am not ruling out yet.
Anyway today I jerked the starter off and fixed the soleniod. I tried the
key and it bumped over for a second then quit. Then I tried the lights,
nothing. So I thought bad connection, I wiggled the wires and checked the
fuses and nothing. So tomorrow I'm off to buy some terminals. Any other
ideas in case that don't work? Anyway thanks in advance.

Re: [Chevelle-list] o/t e-mail question

2007-12-21 Thread Karl Groves
It is really just a simple string search, as far as I know. Google probably
has some method of determining relevance when deciding whether or not to
include a page containing the e-mail address in the results, though. This
is just speculation, but for your e-mail address, it only returns 9 results,
though your address definitely appears on more web pages than that on this
list's archives. Google must be determining that the relevance (or, the
uniqueness) of those other pages isn't high enough to also be included.

Re: [Chevelle-list] O/T business

2007-12-18 Thread Karl Groves
Harlan,

I have no experience running an auto shop. I know a few who do and I also
have some experience with other small businesses (including my own freelance
web stuff, see sig).

Some of the people I know are in the happy position of being so busy they
don't need to advertise their services because word-of-mouth is so strong
they can't handle the business load as it is.

The problem small businesses (of any kind) encounter is how to advertise in
ways that generate a return on their advertising dollar. The bottom line is,
don't bother advertising if you're unwilling to spend real money and do it
for a long term. Advertising works by having people see your ad (and brand)
in numerous places a bunch of times. Placing a one-time ad in a local
newspaper is an absolute waste of money that would be better spent
elsewhere.

Because of the nature of your business, you'll want to really target your
advertising in places which are local and relevant. I'm not sure about your
area, but we have a magazine here on the east coast called Cruisin
(http://www.cruisingmagazine.net/) which would be a good place to advertise
if you were on the east coast. There's probably some stuff like that in
your area. This would be the kind of place to look to advertise.

There are many other things you can do that can raise brand awareness:

- Sponsor a car show. There are a lot of car shows which need
sponsors. They need to pay for the space, trophies, advertising, etc., and
sponsors help them offset these costs. The fee to become a sponsor varies.

- Become involved in some local car clubs. I know some people in
some of the clubs I belong to keep pretty busy just doing stuff for other
members.

- Network with other similar services. For instance, if you do
everything except paint, work out a partnership agreement with a body shop.

- Sponsor a Shop Night with one of your local clubs, where club
members can come to the shop and learn something (as long as it is
interesting and useful)

- Get a website and put interesting information on it. Show the
quality of your work and write articles which show your knowledge and
passion.

If you decide to go for it full time, all I can say is good luck. I find
one of the biggest challenges to be finding a way to grow the business while
also DOING the business. About 7 years ago, I ran a talent agency, booking
tours across the US and Europe for some heavy metal and punk bands. The
bands were popular enough that booking the tours wasn't really a problem.
The challenging part was that as the owner of the agency, I not only had to
do business (book tours) but also run the business. I had to be human
resources, accounts payable, accounts receivable, the marketing department,
the IT department, and then I could actually do the work that got the money.
That added a major amount of stress and served to get in the way of making
money.

This October, I weighed heavily whether I was willing to go out on my own.
These days I'm an IT consultant. In September I was looking to leave the
company I was with. During my job search, I found numerous opportunities
which would have allowed me to go out on my own. The challenge, however
would have been ensuring that the rate I charged would cover not only the
money I wanted to make while doing the work, but the money I didn't make
while running the business. In other words, if I wanted to earn $x per
hour, I needed to earn at least 2*$x while producing, to cover the time when
I wasn't producing. Keep that in mind when setting rates - you need to be
making money when you're at the desk paying bills or accepting payments, or
doing sales, not just when you're doing real work.

Good luck, man!

Not sure about shows, but I know he does actually drive it to the Lost In
The 50s cruise at the Glen Burnie Target.

He entered the car in the East Coast Indoor Nationals last weekend with just
one blower.

This is an actual car from my area (here in MD). I've actually seen/heard
and watch it run down the road. He typically trailered the car to each show
and then drove it from the trailer to the show spot. Not that it wasn't
perfectly driveable, but was a definite gas hog!

Since this picture and actually this past year he has gone to a single
blower set up so he can drive the car on the street and not have to tow it
to the shows. He told me it took over 300 HP just to run the thing with the
two blower set up. Wild to say the least!

I am attempting to decide which engine I am going to swap for my existing
350ci. I am considering the GM Crate 383ci 405hp partly because it comes
short some parts. Will the following parts from my 350ci work on the 383ci,
MSD distributor, water pump, flex-plate, and harmonic balancer. I already
know my headers will fit and I have a good working carb. I can use. I think
the 350 and the 383 are the same block with just a different bore and stroke
(probably not quite that simple)in which case these parts should be
interchangeable. The one I am the most uncertain of is the distributor. If
the parts are not interchangeable I will then probably have to go with
another 350ci that I can use these parts on. Would be nice to have the
extra power of the 383ci though.

Currently I am having a upgraded 700R4 transmission installed with a 2400
rpm lock-out converter along with either 3.55 or 3.73 gears (will make that
decision in the next couple of days) including having posi. installed.

I think this combination should match up well with the 383ci, or if I have
to, any of the 350ci crate engines.

Thanks in advance for your help.

I should have waited until Christmas, but it's too late now. I guess I will
just have to look at it as a early Christmas present to myself that the wife
doesn't know about. Oh! Oh! Another bad boy. Our cars do seem to get us
in trouble once in a while in one way or another don't they?

I have a 98 GMC 1 ton (3500) and have done the brakes 3 times. First time I
just changed the pads. The second time I had a shop do it ($200.00) and they
turned the rotors on the vehicle. The third time I pulled the rotors just
like Dan mentioned (had to use a puller to break rotor off the spindle) and
the next time a shop is going to do them. With the hub pressed on to the
rotor it was hard for the machine shop to set them up to turn. After I
bought pads and had the rotors turned I was into the job close to $125.00
and close to 5 hours of my time. I am not a novice at this sort of stuff and
had all the right equipment. Again as Dan mentioned the best thing to do is
make sure you use premium pads.

It depends. Where did the codes come from? Many times they
are generic, but they can also often be given to specific Web
sites or affiliates. If the code was given to a specific
affiliate, then it might only be valid for them and should
not be shared. You might want to see if any of these vendors
have affiliate programs. If so, you can both earn money and
give them discounts when you refer them.

Re: [Chevelle-list] OT: Microsoft Publisher 2007

2007-10-02 Thread Karl Groves
As someone who makes web sites professionally, I can tell you that without a
shadow of a doubt, Microsoft Publisher is absolutely the last thing I would
use to create an HTML document. The markup it creates is hideous and
everytime I see or hear about an HTML document created with Publisher, I
want to gouge my eyes out.

I write everything in Notepad, but I understand not everyone has the code-fu
I have. If you're going to buy something, buy Dreamweaver. As web tools go,
these tools are only as good as the person using them, but in the hands of a
layperson, Dreamweaver is far less likely to create as much of a mess than
most anything else.

Re: [Chevelle-list] OT: Microsoft Publisher 2007

2007-10-02 Thread Karl Groves
I don't want to sound too elitist, but my official opinion on the best web
site production tool is a knowledgeable and experienced web designer. There
are countless reasons for this opinion which would probably come off more
like a sales pitch, so I'll bite my tongue on that side of things and just
talk about the tools themselves.

HTML stands for Hypertext Markup Language. The act of marking up a
document goes back to the 13th century and the letterpress. Publishers would
mark up a document so the letterpress operator would know how to lay out
the document. HTML is just the electronic version of the same activity.

In HTML, every tag has a special purpose. For instance, the paragraph tag
delineates what is a paragraph. The text within p and /p is the
paragraph.

Tools such as Dreamweaver or Frontpage or whatever tries to make an educated
guess about what the user is trying to do. So, let's say you want to
create a heading at the top of the page. Using Dreamweaver, you can just
manually make the text large and bold. In reality, you should be using h1
for that, rather than playing games with the font. To the layperson, as
long as the text is big and bold, that's all that matters. There's a lot
more to it than that, though.

So, back to the tools, all of these tools make a guess about what you're
really after, and they really need to perform a balancing act between doing
what you say and doing what you mean. For most, like Frontpage, NetObjects
Fusion, etc. they really spew out a lot of terrible code that can cause a
lot of problems with cross-platform compatibility and maintenance of the
site. When it comes to Dreamweaver, it'll still let you hang yourself, but
it doesn't litter the code any more than you ask it to.

My best advice, regardless of what tool you buy, is that you spend some time
learning more about HTML. With proper knowledge of HTML, you'll be able to
make the tool work for you, rather than you working for it.

One more thing: If this is a website for a business, you really need to have
a professional do it. Stanford University's Web Credibility Project
(http://credibility.stanford.edu/) has been performing a long term study
into credibility on the web. They've found that the quality of the site has
a direct relationship to how much credibility a visitor ascribes to a site.

To illustrate this point, go to these two sites:
http://www.istal.com/smoke/
http://www.webaccessstrategies.com

Both organizations perform the same types of services. Which one are you
likely to regard as more professional and more likely to produce quality
work?

Just some food for thought.

Karl,

Well thats good to know, especially coming from a professional web site
designer. In about a month I'll have some money saved up from my
buisness...Is DreamWeaver the best web site designer? Or at least one that's
pretty good. I'm fairly good with computers, and I know that websites are
all HTML based. I've played with HTML a very very small amount, but that's
it. The publisher just seemed pretty easy to use and would do what I wanted
it to do(for now). I bought my domain on GoDaddy.com, and used thier little
web site builder. It was absolutely horrible...That's why I was looking into
publisher.

I made my rotisserie based on those plans.
Be careful of the measurements on those plans, they will not fit a Chevelle.

A whole lot of good that would do. Last time I called Comp Cams' tech line I
was put on with someone who was so obviously unwilling to help and unwilling
to do anything other than punch numbers into his little software. Anything I
said which deviated from answering his scripted questions was met with an
indignant repeat of the previous question. The whole experience sucked so
bad, I hung up and called Airflow Research instead. AFR was kind enough of
to actually talk to me about what I needed. Comp Cams should throw AFR some
commission for the order I eventually made of a full Comp Cams valvetrain.

A friend came across this, I though you guys would get a kick out of this
true story.
Joe P

A New York man retired. He wanted to use his retirement money wisely, so it
would last, and decided to buy a home and a few acres in Portugal. The
modest farmhouse had been vacant for 15 yrs.; the owner and wife both had
died, and there were no heirs. The house was sold to pay taxes. There had
been several lookers, but the large barn had steel doors, and they had been
welded shut. Nobody wanted to go to the extra expense to see what was in the
barn, and it wasn't complimentary to the property anyway..so, nobody
made an offer on the place. The NY guy bought it at just over half of the
property's worth, moved in, and set about to tear in to the
barn...curiosity was killing him. So, he and his wife bought a
generator, and a couple of grinders..and cut thru the welds. What was in
the barn...?

Go to; www.intuh.net/barnfinds/afa70.htm and start wishing you had bought
the place.

Please let me know if I'm totally out of touch with reality :).

Yesterday I went to look at a 65 chevelle malibu convertible. White with
blue interior, reported to be numbers matching. It was a 30 footer at
best. Panels were generally straight, some peeling cracking of paint
between the trunk lid top well. Passenger front fender was pushed in
right at the front corner, looked like they sideswiped a garage door.
Looked like a 10 year old Earl Sheib paint job. Interior looked like it
was recently done. Door panels looked original with repair carpeting added
at the bottom 6 inches-I don't think that was original. Carpet good, Front
bench seat cover looked relatively new clean except for a 2 inch gash
under the drivers butt.Recent aftermarket A/C added but the water pump
pulley had no provision for a belt Motor looked like it could have
been original.

As I raised the hood to look at motor I asked how much.20K! And the
look on my face must have confused the girl, she said, oh wait a minute let
me check the list inside. A minute later she returned Oh I was wrong its
30K! What the heck are these dealers smoking? I went in thinking it
would be in the 10-15K range. It was certainly an OK driver but 30K is
premium money for a 65 - at least I think it is.

I went there with the intent of really looking it over good, but decided
there was no point for further discussion. Is it
possible/likely/reasonable to look for a 65 convertible in the 10-15 K range
that isn't a basket case? Or am I really out of touch with the market.

[Chevelle-list] Bumper Rechroming - nonChevelle

I was wondering if anyone out there had any good advice on where to get some

To me, these pictures are another example of why I love old American cars
and motorcycles. These things scream America to me. There's a certain
style and substance about something like a 53 Buick Roadmaster, or an old
Harley or one of these gas stations that is, at least to me, distinctly
American, and it is sad to see that sort of style and substance disappearing
under wrecking balls and auto crushers.

Sure thing. I'll grab those numbers sometime this afternoon.

BTW - I just realized an error in my list. The Edelbrock Performer RPM is
new. It was installed on a 76 Vette for literally a day. For those of you
with 3rd gen Vettes you know the hood clearance issues they have. The
clearance problem was so bad with the RPM that it was taken off and replaced
with a regular Performer. So, this intake is essentially brand new.

Frankly, I don't know what any of this stuff is worth which is why I don't
list any prices. No reasonable offer will be refused, as they say.

The console itself is in pretty good condition, but dirty. The color is a
tan/brown color, but the lid for the box is black. From a structural
standpoint, I'd say Great. From an appearance standpoint, I'd say fair.

I can take pics of any of these parts. In fact, I planned on doing so this

Re: [Chevelle-list] Off topic

2007-04-07 Thread Karl Groves
To add to what Chuck said, my 76 Stingray was the same way.
To me, its all part of the experience. I know a lot of people will
disagree, but I honestly look forward to being exposed to noises.
About a month ago, I had to fly to Kentucky for my uncle's funeral. The
rental car I ended up getting was a Mazda 3. The car was so quiet, it drove
me insane. I'm used to hearing the noisy tires on my truck and the wind
noise and the big V-8 engine with the dual exhaust. 5 minutes outside the
airport, I found myself jamming down the road in that Mazda 3 at 110 mph
because all that feedback I get from my truck was gone. It's a good thing I
never got pulled over. I decided to use the cruise control from then on.

So, back to the point, if you're not a big fan of noise like that, you may
want to avoid the Vette. I dunno what a 2000 is like but my '76 had a lot
of the same kind of noise. I loved it but it doesn't sound like you will.

You're gonna get a fair amount of noise from ANY Corvette,
Dan. If you look at the design, the rear wheels are right
behind the passenger compartment, and with the aggressive
tires used on the Corvette, road noise (especially on the
rough pavement you described) is problematic. I just swapped
my '99 roadster (straight across for a '67 SS396 convert!)
 for the same reasons.
The problem is exacerbated in the coupes because what you
have is essentially an amphitheater behind you and the noise
is redirected forward right at the passenger compartment.

 Last Corvette I owned previous to the C5 was a '69 big-block
roadster, and honestly aside from the overall level of
 sophistication (suspension, brakes, drivetrain amenities),
the overall driving experience of the C5 was still pretty
much the same as the '69. The seating position, the way the
front wheel humps impinge on the forward view, the shape of
the windshield and the viewable area through it, the
relationship of the driver and the controls...
all pretty much the same. The part I enjoyed most about the
car, however, was the consistent 25-27mpg I got at 70-75mph!
For us, the 'Vette was our economy car...

If you really have your heart set on a 'Vette, Dan, you can
add more sound deadener back there and switch to a set of
Michelin Pilots. Both will help reduce the noise, but it's
still an aggravation... at least it was to me.

Besides that, I watched the value of the 'Vette continue to
decline, while the value of the '67 'vert keeps going up.
Plus, I get a lot more thumbs up in the Chevelle! No brainer
for me. Besides, I think I'm done mid-lifin'.

 Good luck with your decision.

  I just test drove a 2000 Corvette with a 350. I like the
 car and it's
very low mileage and very clean! The only problem we had,
 was driving
the car on rough texture asphalt roads. The noise coming from the
rear hatch was pretty bad. Could it be a leaking rear
 hatch seal or a
misfit rear hatch? The hatch seems flush when you inspect
 it in the
rear and I did look at the gasket and it seems OK.

The car drives like a dream, is very responsive, but when
 you hit the
rougher asphalt, and have to drive on it for many miles
 the sound can
be deafening. Trying to talk in the car is a major pain
 and while it
has a great Bose Stereo, what good is it with all the noise.

If the noise is a problem with Vettes, I don't want one,
 old or new!

[Chevelle-list] Why men never get published in Dear Abby

2007-03-29 Thread Karl Groves
I figured you guys might get a kick out of this:

Letter to Dear Abby
Dear Abby,

I've never written to you before, but I really need your advice on what
could be a crucial decision. I've suspected for some time now that my wife
has been cheating on me.

The usual signs. Phone rings but if I answer, the caller hangs up.
My wife has been going out with the girls a lot recently although when I ask
their names she always says, Just some friends from work, you don't know
them.

I always stay awake to look out for her taxi coming home, but she always
walks down the drive. Although I can hear a car driving off, as if she has
gotten out of the car round the corner. Why? Maybe she wasn't in a taxi?

I once picked her cell phone up just to see what time it was and she went
berserk and screamed that I should never touch her phone again and why was I
checking up on her.

Anyway, I have never approached the subject with my wife. I think deep down
I just didn't want to know the truth, but last night she went out again and
I decided to really check on her.

I decided I was going to park my Harley Davidson motorcycle next to the
garage and then hide behind it so I could get a good view of the whole
street when she came home. It was at that moment, crouching behind my
Harley, that I noticed that the rocker covers on my engine seemed to be
leaking a little oil.

Is this something I can fix myself or should I take it back to the dealer?

I just got back from the drag strip where I made my first passes. The first

cleaning supply box, chair toolbox. The second pass was 14.608 @ 93mph and
my final pass was 14.701 @ 92.57mph. I don't know if this is too shabby for
a 4200# car, with me in it, on pump gas and on street tires running a 3.31

Don't get me wrong, I wasn't knocking the idea of the wing. I'm certainly
not an engineer but you look at the spoilers and soon-to-be-wings on
NASCAR's COT, top fuel and funny cars, and think of the wing as a
stabilizing and rear down force item. In order to obtain the speed it does,
I assume down force is sacrificed for aerodynamics.

Or, like Rick said, maybe too much down force on the back would make the
front end tend to lift. It'd be a fun ride none the less!

Re: [Chevelle-list] List Etiquette

2007-02-24 Thread Karl Groves
Larry -

I've been participating in discussion lists since back when only geeks (I
mean that in the good sense) had computers. I've also run my fair share of
lists as well. Discussion list etiquette is important to ensure harmony of
the list. Truth is, while some people may use their computers solely for
recreation, others (like me) make their living on their computer. So the
last thing these latter folks need is a mailbox full of crap. In my
opinion, discussion list participants owe their fellow list members the
respect of following a few simple guidelines.

Here are a handful of rules I use on the lists I run.

No fighting. Healthy disagreeing is cool, fighting sucks and you will be
banned.
Do not discuss politics or religion (unless your list is political or
religious in nature, of course).
Similarly, keep the discussion on topic. We are here to discuss
__. While many of us may be interested in similar other, things,
the one thing we know we agree on is and so that is what we
discuss here. If there is something off-topic you feel you absolutely must
share with us, please mark it as off-topic with OT in the subject line.
That way the other list members can choose to delete the message if they'd
rather not read off-topic messages. Please refrain from posting too many
off-topic messages. If we feel you're posting too many off-topic messages,
we may be forced to moderate you.
Please do not post personal messages to the list. If your message is meant
for only one other list member, then send it directly to that list member.
This goes for responses as well as original messages.

The rules for the lists I run are generally longer and more involved than
this, but the above are the ones I feel are most important.
There are several other resources out there for list etiquette, including an
official RFC - http://www.faqs.org/rfcs/rfc1855.html

Bottom line is that list etiquette is all about respecting the other list
members. As the Internet becomes the playground of laypeople, a lot of
things like list etiquette go by the wayside. The inmates really are running
the asylum sometimes.

It is good that this list moderates itself rather well because I've seen
some good list go to hell in a handbasket. It sounds like the list you're
referring to could use some gentle moderation to maintain its usefulness for
its members.

Oh, BTW - I should have sent this to you in a personal e-mail. ;-)

of them emails back with Hey I can't come because its my 50th birthday.
Then instead of changing the subject line everyone answers saying Happy
Birthday or whatever. So then a simple Who is coming to the meeting
turns into 25-30 nonsense emails. Is there a way to let them know this is
annoying and he should be emailing certain people instead of to the group
without offending them ?

Don't get me wrong, the Chevelle List is pretty good about not doing this.
Would emailing the list moderator be the best solution and explain to him
the problem? I value everyone's opinion and would appreciate some input. Now
the problem is this, Does everyone on the list want to hear about this or
should I ask you to email me directly ?

That's been my experience as well. However, it doesn't really explain why,
when the belt engages completely (stops slipping) the fan runs nonstop.
The fan clutch should not be engaged at highway speed.

My semi-educated guess says that the fan clutch is bad, causing resistance.

I have just had an expensive weekend. My 46 Chevy Truck's 700R4 trany dies.
The guy that installed the trany, put a small trany cooler under the truck.
This was done way before I bought the truck. The small cooler didn't get
much air movement. The new mechanic is installing a high efficiency cooler
in the front of the truck to get better air flow for keeping the trany cool.

I don't race the truck, but want to drive it on long drives. The truck has
an old radiator that works well with the 350 LT1 engine. It runs 185 which
is fine but it has no transmission lines for cooling in the radiator. Do you
have to cool the trany through the radiator, or is it better to have a large
separate trany cooler instead? What about a fan pushed cooler, would it be
better. After the cost I am investing, I don't want to go through this
again!

It's a stock running 427 from a 1967 Vette. It is complete, but I'm sure he
will take the distributor out. He's having some problems with the engine,
that I believe are electrical in nature. He plans on putting in a larger
crate motor! It would not be my choice for a nice 67 Stingray, but I don't
have his money!

I think I can get the engine cheap, but want to be fair. I need to do some
checking to see what the HP is on the engine. I would imagine around 390 and
doubt it's the 430HP, but that's a big guess!

Michael. I remember you posting a long story about the door issue several
weeks ago. Hearing it again makes me think that the story begs the question

I don't mean to be critical. I'm just wondering if there's more to the
story, like Goodmark refusing to accept the return or something else. IMO,
a bad product is one thing, but if they were also unwilling to honor a

Subject: [Chevelle-list] HELP - Question about body panels

Folks - I am asking for some expertise on this issue - sorry it is long, but
it is a good read.

I noticed that in Ground-Up Restorations, there are 2 different quality
levels of new repop fenders for the 1971-1972 Chevelles. One, part #
RF-71L, is listed at $260, and is not listed as a GM Restoration Part.
Another, part # RF-71GML, is listed at $319, and is supposedly newly
retooled, and offer a more definitive fit, with sharper edges. It is
listed as the GM Restoration Part for our cars.

Now OPG has similar fenders - but only one part # for a left front fender -
PZ00611, listed at $269 (and on sale right now for $220). I also took the
time to notice that their full quarters for the same car using original GM
tooling, and listed as the finest quality available, and the only ones
licensed by GM - for the low-low price of only $400. That is about $200
less then everyone else. As a skeptic, I placed a call and talked to Jason
on the other line. This is what he said.

Question: Your competitors have two repop fenders available, one that is
standard quality, and one that is newly retooled and the only GM
Restoration Part, with better body lines. Which are your $260 fenders -
the good ones, or the bad ones. Who manufactures your fenders?

Answer: They are both the same fenders. There is only one manufacturer in
the world, and that is Dynacorn. The panels are licensed by GM for
restoration purposes, stamped overseas, and distributed by Goodmark and Cars
Inc., among others. The tooling is wildly expensive, and there is only one
set of tooling for these fenders in the world. If someone else is
advertising two qualities of fenders, they are selling the same fender piece
for two prices. Beware of these guys.

Question: Okay, assuming that is true, you are stating that your fenders
are the GM licensed fenders, the best available, made with the best
tooling in the industry, and manufactured by Dynacorn and shipped directly
to your warehouse in Huntington Beach, Ca?

Answer: Yes - that is why we have the best price around for that fender and
are able to offer it to you for great savings.

Question: I also noticed a similar situation with your full quarters for
the same car. You are supposedly selling the best available GM Restoration
quarters for $200 less then the competition. What gives?

Answer: Same issue. Only one set of tooling, and Dynacorn has it. These
are the only GM Restoration quarters (the same being offered by Goodmark),
and we offer a substantial savings because they are shipped directly to San
Diego

Re: [Chevelle-list] Body off Frame How-To?

2006-11-22 Thread Karl Groves
First thing you need to do is remove EVERYTHING you can from the car.
Chevelle bodies are HEAVY.

Now, others may have different tricks tips to share, but the end goal is
the same: Take the body off the frame and roll the frame out from under the
body.

My method is this:
1. Place 1 saw horse at each corner of the body.
2. Jack up the body
3. Place pieces of wood (4x4s at least) between the saw horses, so you're
supporting the body
4. Roll the frame out

Seems simple, right?
Well, I've demolished 2 sets of saw horses (that's right, 8 saw horses) this
way.
The first set was metal, and the manufacturer claimed they supported 800lbs
each. I think they got their lbs and grams confused because the legs
buckled on the two front ones causing a chain reaction an the car fell
The second set was (seemed) more substantial, with a claimed capacity of
1000lbs per pair. I'm guessing that the Chevelle body weighs more than
2000lbs because one sawhorse completely shattered and 2 of them buckled, but
did not break.

I've now constructed my own saw horses out of 4x4 wood, held together with
1/2 inch threaded rod, bolted up nice tight.
I have a 4x4 top piece, 4 legs that are 4x4s and braces (front back, and
each side) made from 2x6s.

I do not know for sure that this will hold, but I'm almost positive it will.
If it doesn't, the next step is welding some up!

I'll let you know how it goes

I know, there are no stupid questions, only stupid answers. Hopefully we
won't get any on this topic.

I know the classic A-body cars we love have some problems that need to be
addressed occasionally on cars that have not been apart in 30-plus years.
One of those happens to be the frame - notably, the frame mounts that are
prone to rusting. I want to inspect my frame for rust, and in the process,
put some POR-15 on it to prevent it rusting for the next 30 years or so. I
plan to pull the car apart starting in January, but I don't have any high
dollar tools or access to a local shop. Is there an easy way (or not too
incredibly hard way) to pull the body in my garage? Can I use an engine
hoist to lift the front, support it on some concrete blocks and a 4x4, do
the same with the back, and roll the frame out from underneath it? Without
buying some special tools and/or shop time, I am not sure of any other way.
Any local guys know a place that can help me with this endeavor? My body
shop of choice will only work on the body when it is on the frame. The
ideal situation would be a good body guy that would work on the body while
it was on a rotisserie so I could have 6-8 months to work on the chassis.
There are at least a few guys here that have done this - what did you do?

Now if I can only prevent the if you give a mouse a cookie routine...

I'd like to reiterate something everyone has said: THIS IS DANGEROUS.
During my first attempt, I was rather naïve in thinking it would be easy.
The body came up so effortlessly, but then that first sawhorse buckled and
the car fell and I spent the next several minutes thanking God there wasn't
anyone underneath the car. It really set me straight. BE CAREFUL

T.J, that is just about exactly the way I did it. If you
look carefully at the body of the car, the bottom sheet metal
has additional bracing located in the trans tailhousing area,
and further back. Find these sections and put your 4x4's
there. Jack it up from inside the frame first carefully. If
you can get under it, you can make the necessary block
arrangements to lift the body. Once it's up from the frame,
you replace the 4x4's and blocks and jackstands to the
outside of the frame. That way, you can just pull the frame
out from underneath it. For goodness sakes, be carefull!
This lifting and do this will kill you if you are not
careful. It scared me and I was so careful.

[Chevelle-list] NHRA Rules - Fuel Line

2006-11-18 Thread Karl Groves

It has been a lng time since I read the NHRA rules. From what I
remember, the rules say no more than 12-inches of rubber fuel line.
What do the rules say about Aluminum line?

The reason I ask is because I can't seem to find 1/2 fuel line anywhere. The
only 1/2 line I can find is Aluminum.

Any all comments are welcome, because I'm drawing a blank here.

[Chevelle-list] A part 3? (was RE: Part 2 (was RE: Small Rant: Customer Service))

2006-11-15 Thread Karl Groves

I know this is already a
tired subject for the list (it is for me, at least), but my scruples tell me I owe it to all involved to finish
the story.

After my frankly
unsatisfying phonecall with Vinny at Summit, my wife told me it wasn't just
once, or twice, but 6 times she's called there and gotten less-than-friendly
service. Idecided I'd sendSummit an e-mail - practically a cut
paste of what I've sent to this list - explaining my grievances.

The next morning, I got
an e-mail response from John, a Sr. Supervisor in Summit's customer service
dept. (I may have the name incorrect, I'll have to hunt down the e-mail). In it,
he asked for more details. I told him I'd rather talk on the phone. In my
opinion, you can tell far more about what a person means by how they say it.
Anyone can write the words "I'm sorry" in an e-mail, but you can usually tell if
they mean it if you hear them say it.

The conversation went
extremely well. John disputed Vinny's claim that there's no way to track
down who a customer talked to. John stated that their phone system keeps
records of which CSR talked to a customer based on phone #. Vinny said
that wasn't possible (I knew it was because we did exactly that, with similar
software, at my previous job). John stated - rather vehemently -
that he was going to track down who the people were and deal with them
accordingly. Naturally he couldn't say what that was, because he
needed to gather all the facts first, but I did leave the phone call believing
that certain heads were gonna roll around there.

John and I ended up
shooting the shit for another 10 mins or so and he told me that the next time my
wife calls, if anyone gives her trouble, that she should ask specifically for
him.

Ladies gentlemen,
this is how to keep customers. Mistakes happen. People have bad days. I've
had them, we've all had them. But when a customer complains, they do it because
they care. How many of us have simply just walked out of a store or
restaurant, or paid our bill somewhere and never come back? But
whena customer complains, they're saying "I want to give you my business,
but you gotta fix something first". John knew this and knew
how to deal with the situation. Kudos to him.

Will I send more business
to Summit? Probably. And I damn sure will escalate my call to John if/
when I get someone I don't like on the phone.

Will I send more business
to OPG? Probably, as long as I don't run into the shipping/ backorder
issues others have mentioned.

Anyway, just thought I'd
finish the story. Thanks for reading.

Pelle -

Run whatever tire pressure gives a nice, even wear pattern
on the tires. Too much air will result in more wear in the center. Too
little will result in more wear on the outsides. Somewhere between 30 and

2006-11-09 Thread Karl Groves
I know there are a few people here who have their own shops, so I figured
I'd share a small rant.

As some of you know, I'm doing a (rather slow) complete frame off resto-mod.
This will likely entail the replacement or rehab of literally everything on
the car. In other words, I will be buying a LOAD of parts and supplies for
this job.

My wife just called Summit Racing to buy some X-mas presents for my car.
She had credit card in-hand and was ready to blow a load of cash. However,
she was treated rudely by the person on the phone. They treated her like she
was some kind of dummy, so she hung up and told me.

I've been a Summit customer since I bought my first car, 15 years ago. I've
been an extremely loyal customer all this time, buying tens of thousands of
dollars worth of parts for 5 different cars.

I just gave my wife the # for Jeg's.
