Re: [Chevelle-list] 427 or 454?

2009-01-01 Thread Michael Pell
I like the 454. I've had both, and the little additional torque of the
454 makes for a great street engine in a heavy car.
It may not rev as fast or as high as a 427, but how often will you
really rev it high anyway?

You should have 400+ ft/lbs available to you at 2000-2500RPM, which is
quite a wonderful feeling. :-)

Either way, that BB torque is awesome.

12's should be do-able. That hard part is getting the car to hook up
with the manual trans. Sitting and spinning will kill an ET everytime. :-)

Anyway, the glue is another story. With any kind of contact cement
it's important to spray both sides and let it dry a few minutes
until it's tacky rather than wet (the Super 77 can says to bond
when it is "aggressively tacky"). Hold the can 6 to 8 inches away,
keep it moving and don't spray too much. If your headliner
material is porous it can ooze out the other side and it is hard
to get off.

Maybe it's a symptom of the fact that I park outdoors in all kinds
of weather, but mine fall down at least once a year, meaning that
the material separates from the bo ards. I have tried 3M Headliner
Adhesive as well as Super 77. Maybe some day I'll just buy the
pre-done ones and get it over with.

Going through stuff in my "car room" today, I came across a 2003 OPG

I had framed in a

2'x3' poster frame years ago.

To make room for some 2009 R/T posters that my brothers got me for

would be interested in it and I have no idea it's worth. I'll let it go

for a reasonable offer, as it belongs hanging up in some Chevelle guy's

garage!!!

I can send a photo of it!

P.S. Most of the other 68/69 Chevelle stuff I hd has been cleared out but

I still have a few odds & ends left:

- a few 1/64 diecasts (unopened)

- a couple of frameable prints

- a 1/24 scale (unopened) AMT model

- a couple of Chevelle cloth patches

I guess I'll farm out that stuff to ebay in the next few weeks when I

have time!

[Chevelle-list] SCAMS!!! Re: lost emails/1965 help

2008-09-01 Thread Michael Pell
A word of caution.
At a minimum, get someone to go look at it. There's often someone on
this list who's near an area. Ofter them some money for their time.
And/or you can try to arrange a professional appraisal. Pictures can
be incredibly decieving (and maybe even doctored up), and a write-up can
be completely false.

Plenty of people get scammed and screwed everyday.

If you can't get either of the above suggestions, you should probably
pass on the car. There's plenty of nice cars for sale, and will be more.

And if it is too dusty for a 'California' duster, then I use a wet wash

needed it. I did a 67 442 Olds for a guy a few years back and
since it left my shop he claims it hasn't seen water since. Myself
even after I get my 66 done, it will see water and a wash mitt if
I deem it nescessary. And when I stop showing it and start driving
it, it will probably get washed a whole lot more due to the long
overdue floggings it will recieve!!

I put the big sway bar from a 2nd gen Firebird onto my Chevelle. Bolts
right up, and really firms up the front end.

It made a noticeable improvement in front end handling.

Of course, those swaybars may be a little harder to find in the salvage
yards than they were 15 years ago..

take care,

I tried to find the answer in other forums, but had no luck. I'm having difficulties about
finding the right appropriate size and brand of sway bar to choose from that will fit my
application and that will not do me vehicle more harm than good. I was looking at the hotchkis
bars, but they use polyurethane bushings and I don't really want to deal with the squeaking.
I'm thinking about getting the 1 1/4" or the 1 3/8" front bar. Then later on get the
rear 1" sway bar. Would this be a good set up or is it too much? For the Hotchkis bars,
I heard that some have had their sway bars break since they are made as hollow. Is this
correct? I believe GP superstore is giving a 20% discount on Hotchkis parts. Also, some car
owners have suggested that OPGI has good heat treated sway bars. Does any one know of these
bars being worth the buy?

I use my 1970 chevelle as a street driver car, which has a 350 engine, 350 tranny, rebuilt 12 bolt 3.47 non-posi rear end, with some high performance parts here and there. I bought the lower box rear control arms from Ground Up. Most of the front suspension is of Moog parts and have front and rear Hotchkis springs with KYB shocks up front and Monroe shocks at rear. My car never sees the track, since it's not built as a racing car. However, if it helps, later on I will beef up the engine to a 383 in the future.

I have never had that experience driving with any sway bar, front or rear, that I don't
know how it feels. Some people say it's better and you can really feel the difference
than without one. Some also say to never drive on the streets without one. I don't have
one and I drive on the streets all the time. I mean, I do feel that "lean" feel
on the car that people talk about. So, should I invest in a pair of sway bars after all?
I'm all for any improvments in my driving handling. Bottom line, can anyone please point
me in the right direction with specific choices in helping me choose the right
combination of size for the front and rear sway bars and what brand out of many is the
best for me? It will be highly appreciated. thanks

Hmm, I wasn't able to use my original 307 mounts (engine and frame
mounts) on my 454.
That was in '99, and now I don't remember why. I remembered trying

The 454 went right in with the 350/BBC mounts.

I do have the frame and engine mounts to sell. Freshly powdercoated and
new engine mounts. ;-)

Tom,

I have a 307 car running a 350. If I understand you correctly, the
reason it went in is because I used 307 motor mounts. If I use these
same motor mounts I will be able to install my 454 without changing
the frame mounts.

If I go out and buy 454 motor mounts I will have fit issues.

Quick education on 1970 engine mounts.

6 cylinder cars ar ein the arold of their own.

307 cars have taller frame stands and shorter engine mounts. If you
have an original 307 car, you will need to use 307 engine mounts for
whatever you decided to put in. 307 mounts will bolt on to and chevy
V-8 engine. The 307 frame stands and engine mounts are also wider
than the 350/big block ones.

350/big block cars have shorter frame stands and taller engine
mounts. For these cars, use 350 engines mounts, they will bolt on to
any Chevy V-8.

Only one thing I would recommend different. Don't pump the pedal.
Crack the bleeder, have the helper push the pedal to the floor and
hold it, close the bleeder. Repeat until you see no more air bubbles.
>From the Baer brake tech sheet, " it's not a contest to see how far
you can shoot fluid across the shop floor." Plus if the master
cylinder was dry, don't forget to bench bleed it first.

Steve, I don't think the process is any different from bleeding
disc/disc systems. To start, I am assumming that the master
cylinder is all good and filled. Then start with someone in the
car and you and a can of brake fluid at the right rear drum. Have
the person punp it up and hold it. Then you crack the bleed screw
then close it. repeat over and over again going from the furthest
point to the the nearest. Never let the fluid go empty in the
master cylinder.

In a coffee can with brake fluid, I also use a tube that is out on

the bleed screw to help avoid sucking air back in .

I have never had a booster go bad.

hope this helps

Speaking of old hearses

When I was in Little League (some 30 years ago), my Dad had acquired a
early 60s or so Caddy Hearse. As I recall, he traded a stack of
Playboys about 4' tall. This became his "beer run" machine, as they (the
Jaycees) could put a lot of cases in there.

For an away Little Leage game, he cleaned out the old hearse, and we
used it to drive the entire team to the away game. And he let us take
shoe polish over the entire car! it was a hoot!

And if memory serves, he traded it off for a shotgun.

Awhile back I posted that my wife is retiring soon and did remark as
how a retired grandma looked good in a Cadillac. So I immediately
began looking for a 1959 Cadillac project. Scored one last night on
Ebay and got it for less than I was willing to spend, good thing it is
only about a 25 mile trip to load it on the trailer and back to my
shop. Exactly what I was looking for, 62 Series, 4 door, pb pw a/c ps,
has some rust issues in the normal places on these cars but is
complete, just needs to be a frame off job done. Anyway I know it
isn't what we all thrive on, but I've done a 72 El Camino and a 72
Monte Carlo so time for something different. Well, other then the 1944
B B Farmall I'm currently restoring and the 1968 Montgomery Ward's
250cc Touring Motorcycle which is finished and being ridden.

Just wanted to put something out to read as it is really slow.

Re: [Chevelle-list] OT: Microsoft Publisher 2007

2007-10-03 Thread Michael Pell
I certainly agree with all the comments about using Publisher. It is
not a web site development tool, and at least with the 2003 version,
produces some awful .html code, and the pages are poor at best.

And to be clear from my end, I'm not really "choosing" to use
Publisher. I've been asked to electronically publish a school
newsletter, and they build their newsletter in Publisher. :-) So,
Publisher it is. I just want to see what I can do other than convert it
to PDF (which does work quite well).

My choice of web development tools is NetObjects Fusion
(www.netobjects.com). I've been using it for about 10 years, and really
like it.
Not that I'm a "big time" web developer...

Re: [Chevelle-list] Tremec 5 Speed Info

2007-09-10 Thread Michael Pell

Hi Jerry,
I have a TKO-600 in my '69 Chevelle.

The 3.31 gears will work great with the 5sp.

The only real 'gotcha' with installing the 5sp is that you'll need to do
some tunnel mods to get it to fit in, a pretty easy crossmember mod, and
shorten the driveshaft. Other than that, It's pretty darn close to a
direct bolt in.
I have lots of pictures and info at the website.

Please feel free to ask questions. I'm happy to help out.
take care,
Mike

Passenger side installed with only two bolt hole modifications. Install
time was about two hours after lining up, bolting, loosening, and
reinstalling about 4 times. Driver's side was a horror! It took over 4
hours and in the end I could not get three bolts to line up properly. This
was using new steel replacement inner fenders from The Parts Place in
Elburn, IL. I also used new front end bolt kit from Danchuk. I choose not
to drill new holes as the ones that didn't line up were well hidden inside
the fender and only noticeable with the tire off.

Also the new after market battery tray (also Danchuk) was a bit challenging
to get to line up 100%.

It has been known for a long time that the repro ones don't fit right.
Namely the bolt holes don't line up. I've always heard that you have
to make your own holes in the inner fender. I'll be experiencing this

Re: [Chevelle-list] Holley or Edelbrock

2007-06-26 Thread Michael Pell
I have a Holley 770 Street Avenger carb on my '69 with a 454 and a
TKO-600, and it's been great, right out of the box, and a simple adjust
of the idle mix screws. I was always pleased enough to NOT mess with
it. Then I took it to shop for some head work, and they tweaked the
carb a bit more, and now it starts and runs like a dream. Starts right
up, and I can drive away, even in cold weathe (electric choke). No
hesitation. It just works, which is a nice change.

Re: [Chevelle-list] JUNK Sanderson headers

2007-05-23 Thread Michael Pell
The Hooker Comps actually fit great on my '69. They just hang way too
low. I have stock ride height, with 3.5" of clearance under the
collector flange.

I drag them driving down my level driveway with minimal ruts in the gravel.
I'm with Dale, I'm about ready to go back to manifolds.

I'd try Doug's or anyone else, but no one else makes a
shortie/intermediate for a '69 with BBC and manual trans.

[Chevelle-list] Done! Re: Help bleeding brakes

2007-04-21 Thread Michael Pell
s moved to close off a
section of the brake lines the light will light.
With the test light connected the plug open a
front line and slowly apply pressure at the brake
pedal and watch the light. If it flickers and
stays on the valve has slid to the opposite side.
You should be able to bleed the rears now but not
the front. What you want is to have the test light
out. You may have to open the rear line and repeat
the apply brake pedal slowly while watching the
light until it stay out.

At some point in time the brake pedal was applied
with a leak or open line to the rear brakes and
the prop valve closed off the rear brakes. When
the prop valve closes off either side it is for
safety and you will have at least half of the
braking system to stop the vehicle.

Try the test light to see if the prop valve has
slid to either side.

The Prop valve is from a '69, I think. No

such pin as you mention. 2 inputs, 3 outputs,
1 idiot wire plug-in (currently not utilized).
I took the 1st MC back, and got another just
like it. It seems to be working better.

I finally got the fronts to bleed!!! And the
front wheels are done. This has not been fun.

Now the rears won't bleed at all, haven't
moved an ounce from the resevoir. I can see
bubbles move forward/back as the pedal is
pumped (1 man bleed kit), so I know that the
lines are clear and not kinked. At least some
air is getting moved at the rear wheel
cylinder as the pedal is pumped.

I did bench bleed the MC, that went fine.

I'm going to let it sitt over night hoping to
let the gravity do it's thing.
I don't think I've ever had this much trouble
bleeding brakes!!

Thanks for the suggestions.

For 72 anyway, there is a pin on the

I did successfully bleed the MC seperately, so I know that part is

I even , gulp, read the directions. Open the bleeder open on the

I can hear and see the air moving a bit in the clear hose from the

Any tips on how to get the fluid down the lines?

Re: [Chevelle-list] bypass hose big block

2007-03-13 Thread Michael Pell
I asked this very same question a few years ago. If memory serves (yes,
it's questionable) that hose allows the coolant to circulate through the
block before the thermostat opens (and thus allows the coolant to go
through the radiator). The point is to prevent hot spots around the
cylinders.
So there is some utility to it, but it doesn't seem to be uncommon to
block this off.

What will happen if I do remove it and is it recomended.

Hello ALL,

For the blessed event of removal from mailing list to occur, one need be
cognizant of the procedures involved.
One obviously cannot simply remove oneself apparently without a lot of hand
holding and parental guidance reminiscient of when one was in Elementary
school and one was duly reprimanded for something like tossing gum at girls,
putting tacks on seats, or flatulating in class.
The inconsistency of the mental awareness seemingly inherrent in individuals
who cannot grasp the minor ability to simply UN REGISTER themselves is quite
comparable to the mental obscurity of our current pathetic puppet president.
Since y'all cannot comprehend the simplictics available through the
Craft-O-Matic (thank you) unsubscribe routine, there is NO HOPE for ya.
You'll merely have to accept ALL INCOMING E-MAILS as there will be many more
to come, and you'll have to change your profile to incorporate that of which
you have become--a drooling, sniveling, incomplete Human being, subject to
ANY form of sarcasm ANYONE sees fit to have you incur.
Since you don't like where you are, go be somewhere else where your kind is
accepted like at the Salvation Army. There you should have no problem with
mental compatibility for explanations of things will be on a par with our
excuse of a president and you.

Stumble away as quickly as possible!!

Re: [Chevelle-list] Timing cover pan gasket

2007-02-03 Thread Michael Pell

John,
Sorry, I didn't notice if anyone replied or not, so I'll take a stab at
it anyway.

Yes, you can replace the TC gasket by lowering the oil pan. It's a
pain, but can be done. The hard part is getting the pan gasket to seal
properly afterwards.

I've done this successfully; one single time in my life, but might
work, if you don't mind the look. Take some brake cleaner and spray the
TC gasket thoroughly. Try to get all the oil out. Let it dry for a few
minutes. Take your handy-dandy self-reproducing nasty old Ultra-Black
silicon, and fill up the outer edges of the TC where it leaks. Smooth
it over with your finger for that "almost hilllbilly" look.I
successfully sealed up a front seal on the bottom side of a TC like that
once. Fortunately, no one could see the work of art that silicone
provides. But it worked, no more leak! and only took a few minutes
of effort.

However, I've tried a couple of times since then with less success.

There's also some other products similar to silicone that advertise
'instant seal' even with oil present to seal up similar oil leaks. Find
them near the silicone in your local auto parts store.

Good luck,
Mike

With 4.56s, your 1st gear will be mighty short, much shorter than what
you have with your 2.20 1st gear now.
I'm quite sure you'll want a taller rear end gear to tame down that
"Starting Line Ratio".
Maybe not though. Like I said, I have a customer with 4.88s and the

But is something to think about.

Good afternoon Chevelle List: I am planning to have a Tremec 5 Speed
installed in my car this spring. I am requesting any & all thoughts &
advice, even if it's just thinking out loud. This is an expensive
item and a one shot deal for me so if there is any info or experiences
out there I should know about, please don't be shy!

Aside from normal installation situations, one item that has been
brought to my attention is that there have been problems & difficulty
in power shifting at high rpms from 2nd to 3rd. The car is a fair
weather weekend driver only, an occassional, OK, more than occassional
few gears on the street, with a trip to the drags once or twice a
summer. My reflexes aren't what they were 40 years ago & I don't do
power shifting anymore anyway. The next item is whether to go with
the .64 or .82 5th gear. Would I be giving up all top end punch with
the .64 for the sake of really low highway rpms or would the .82 put
me whare I want to be & still give it some power if needed. I've done
the math on the web calculators but it appears to be a judgement
call. 1st gear will be 2.87 and the rear will be a Moser posi
3.73. The car is a 65 SS with a .40 over 327, Muncie M-20 with Hurst,
Edelbrock Alum heads & manifold, Demon 750, Comp Cams 274 Extreme,
MSD, and Hedman. It currently cruises the highway at 3400 rpm at
65mph with 215x75x15 redline tires. Mostly Show but its got plenty of
Go. I'm looking maintain performance & make it highway enjoyable.
All thoughts, ideas, and any experiences you're willing to share will
be greatly appreciated. Sorry for the long entry. Had to get all my
thought down. Thank You All.

Re: [Chevelle-list] Tremec 5 Speed

2007-01-26 Thread Michael Pell

Hi Phil,
Some mighty good questions! (and thanks Alex).

If you really want a better shift, upgrade the shifter to the McLeod
shifter. It's expensive at $349, but will give you a little better
shift. If money is a concern, then I'd recommend you give the stock
Hurst shifter a try. It's a decent shifter. I think you'll also find
these transmissions shift much nicer than the Muncies. One major
difference is that you do not want to force the transmission into gear
like you may have in the past with the Muncies. Just break that habit
and palm the shifter into gear without forcing. You can get a quick
shift with a little more finesse.

My personal preference and suggestion is nearly always to go with the
TKO-600. IMHO, 5th gear will take care of itself. 1st gear however,
can become a nuisance if it is too short. I used to have the
equivelant of the TKO-500 (3.27 1st gear) and didn't like 1st because it
was too short. I was shifting partway through most intersections. I
swapped to the TKO-600 when it became available. It helped
considerably! Now I can get all the way through intersections.

Once in a while I'll recommend the TKO-500, when the rear gear ratio is
taller than a 3.55 and/or a really high winding motor with a narrow
power band like a 302, and/or a smaller motor that needs some help
motivating the car.

Here's a calculator to see some hard numbers:
http://www.5speedtransmissions.com/gear_calculator.html
And you can compare your Muncie 4sp against the TKO-500 & TKO-600 side
by side.

With your gears and tires, the difference between the .68 and .64 5th
gear is only 109 RPM at 60mph (1,847 rpm & 1,738 respectively)

I would argue that you won't even notice.

However, look at the 1st gear ratios MPH vs RPM. Let's say you shift
at 20mph out of 1st (just to give a concrete #). With the TKO-500,
you're shifting at 2,960 rpm, with the TKO-600 at 2,598, and at 2,317
with your M20.The 3.27 1st is pretty steep.

Now, personal preference plays a big role. I have a customer with 4.88
rear gears and a 3.27 1st gear, and he loves it. That would drive me nuts.

I'm assuming you know about the required tunnel modifications. If not,
see here: http://www.5speedtransmissions.com/3550_66-7_gm_a-body.html

And if you don't have a price list for all the parts, you can get them
here: http://www.5speedtransmissions.com/gm_3550_package.html

And I always encourage people to asks lots of questions, and ask around
for varying opinions. You're right, only want to do this upgrade once! :-)

You will love the upgrade. These transmissions shift great, and it's
awesome cruising on the interstate at 70-75mph along with everyone else,
and still be able to hear yourself think. :-)

take care,
Mike

Aside from normal installation situations, one item that has been

in power shifting at high rpms from 2nd to 3rd. The car is a fair

the .64 or .82 5th gear. Would I be giving up all top end punch with
the .64 for the sake of really low highway rpms or would the .82 put

the math on the web calculators but it appears to be a judgement

Re: [Chevelle-list] Heater Hose Removal

2007-01-25 Thread Michael Pell

ha! reminds me of a funny story, well, at least funny to me.
A buddy was trying to get a heater hose off (before we knew Jim's trick,
at around age 16-17). He worked at it for at least 15 minutes.
Pulling, pushing, yanking, cursing, sweating, and just carrying on. He
was pretty mad before he gave up in disgust. I asked if I could try,
and he gave me the 'yeah right' look, and said "go ahead", probably
with a few more curse words involved.

I reached in twisted once, and pulled it right off. My laughing
hysterically didn't seem to help his mood any, but makes me laugh to
this day.

Those things can be a real bear sometimes. I like the grease idea.

Cut them off at the end of the heater core stub, then slice the hose
lengthwise with a razor blade or utility knife, separate the cut with

Bob Lutz is having an influence. He is trying to make the Malibu the new
"hot" car to compete with the Japanese and German offerings instead of the
plain vanilla rental that is just an afterthought for buyers.

Some quotes from the article:

Say "Chevy Malibu," and some Americans think of a 1960s muscle car.
Unfortunately for General Motors Corp., many more think, "rent-a-car."

GM's Vice Chairman for product development Robert Lutz says the new

Malibu's

more refined looks, improved ride and quieter interior are a milestone in
the company's multiyear effort to upgrade the look and feel of its sedans
and coupes. Now Chevy is going for a more international feel -- a European
look with an inside that borrows from 1960s American style.

"It's a poster boy for what we are trying to do," says Mr. Lutz, who

joined

GM in 2001 with a mandate to lead a revitalization of its vehicle design.
--
On the outside, the 2008 Malibu looks German, with an exterior profile and
proportions similar to a Volkswagen Passat.

The interior is a more dramatic departure. The dashboard has a "dual
cockpit" look. "It's almost a direct lift from the '58-59 Corvette
interiors," says Mr. Lutz.

John Mack, who led the Malibu's interior design team, says most versions
will come with two-tone interiors, such as "cocoa and cashmere."

dark gray plastic parts" -- renting a GM car "becomes a national

I personally never in 5 years had a single complaint about the fit or

I also had a time when Goodmark shipped the correct panel but for the

quarters for the same car using "original GM tooling," and
listed as the "finest quality" available, and the only ones
licensed by GM - for the low-low price of only $400. That is
about $200 less then everyone else. As a skeptic, I placed a
call and talked to Jason on the other line. This is what he said.

Question: Your competitors have two repop fenders available,
one that is "standard quality," and one that is "newly
retooled" and the only "GM Restoration Part," with better body
lines. Which are your $260 fenders - the good ones, or the
bad ones. Who manufactures your fenders?

Answer: They are both the same fenders. There is only one
manufacturer in the world, and that is Dynacorn. The panels
are licensed by GM for restoration purposes, stamped overseas,
and distributed by Goodmark and Cars Inc., among others. The
tooling is wildly expensive, and there is only one set of
tooling for these fenders in the world. If someone else is
advertising two qualities of fenders, they are selling the
same fender piece for two prices. Beware of these guys.

Question: Okay, assuming that is true, you are stating that
your fenders are the "GM licensed" fenders, the best
available, made with the best tooling in the industry, and
manufactured by Dynacorn and shipped directly to your
warehouse in Huntington Beach, Ca?

Answer: Yes - that is why we have the best price around for
that fender and are able to offer it to you for great savings.

Question: I also noticed a similar situation with your "full
quarters" for the same car. You are supposedly selling the
best available GM Restoration quarters for $200 less then the
competition. What gives?

Answer: Same issue. Only one set of tooling, and Dynacorn
has it. These are the only GM Restoration quarters (the same
being offered by Goodmark), and we offer a substantial savings
because they are shipped directly to San Diego and we truck
them up to LA. That savings goes straight to you. Oh - and
they are on sale too right now. Get your order in quick.

Now - Are they feeding me a line? Do they really have the
best stuff for substantial savings over the competition - or
do they

2006-12-12 Thread Michael Pell

FYI.

Hello,
This may be a needle in a haystack thing but here it goes. I
recently came across some paperwork for a 67 Chevelle I had in the mid
80's. It is the original paperwork for the car (retail order) I was
hoping by chance maybe someone in your club may know if the car is still
in Indiana and maybe a slight chance they know who has it. I sold the
car in 85 or 86 I lived in Huntington IN at the time , the gentleman who
purchased the car lived in Anderson IN and I think had the last name of
Wolfe (not sure about that) The Chevelle is a little rare because it
was a Malibu with a 283 and a factory 4 speed , the car also had
factory buckets with a console and the clock . It was red with a black
top and interior and the car was nice at that time. I do have the VIN
number and I thought the owner would like to have this
paperwork.plus it was one of my favorite cars and I would like
to have it back if possible. Any help or suggestion I would be more than
happy to listen too.

[Chevelle-list] Brand new Goodmark '69 Chevelle door shell

2006-12-07 Thread Michael Pell
Just and FYI regarding the new reproduction Goodmark doors, they aren't
any better than any other repro part, maybe even worse.
The one I bought was 1/2" too short (top to bottom)!! The body man had
to add 1/2" to the bottom of the door!! Arrg!
And, he had to shim it OUTWARD by nearly 1/3" to get it to be flush with
the front fender. And there was a couple of other little gotchas that
he had to fix.
So far at least all the internals seem to fit in, and the glass fits. I
probably should've just replaced the outer skin.

And the repo repair rocker panel (don't know manufacturer, but was from
The Paddock) was way off also. It was a full 1" too long length-wise,
and too narrow across the top. He had to add an angled horizontal piece
the length of the rocker (less the 1") that started at about 1/2" down
to 1/4". Another customer has 2 of these for his car, and they have
the exact same dimensions, thus the same problems!

How could they be so far off!Arrrgghh!!! Fortunately this guy is
good enough to work around these problems.

Mike

I've been doing business with the "little guys", AutoObsession, Old Car
Network, etc for a few years now.
You always get to talk to the same guy, who after a while remembers who
you are.
You can't beat the customer service, because it's their own business,
and they CARE about these kinds of discussions.
They can provide the same items, and often match the prices of the "big
guys", or at least close enough for me. What's another dollar on a part
to get the service you want and demand? And they will give you an
honest opinion as to the quality of a part if you ask.

came with the Cortez silver on lower panel and in middle of deck lid rear

Did all of the Malibus that came with the lower side body trim have the

Here's an example:

Was it a standard paint scheme?

What would be a possible range of tire sizes for a 15" rim and a 6" wide

I have no idea of the height, but a 26" or so would be in the ballpark.
I'm guessing around a 180/70 R15 ???

I want a set of headers that fit, look nice, are coated to continue to

Which headers should I consider? I see lots of choices.

From the dragnet list:

This is more of a general discussion topic than a drag racing topic, but
since it's about Dart Machinery, I thought it would be okay to post it...

Big O Tires is trying to keep Dart from using the terms "Big M heads" and
"Big M blocks", saying that people would confuse them with their company
name. You can read the whole article(Check out who else they are suing)
here:

Pretty frivolous, if you ask me. Maybe if enough racers wrote letters to
Big O, they would drop it...

Hi Stephen,
I've done exactly what you describe to my  '69 Malibu, except that I
tend to go to the track 2-3 times per year with it for fun.
I'tll cost you far more than $2k, I can assure you.  I have over $5k in
parts just in the rear end;  wheels and tires will run you $1k plus.
Now, I do have a race ready Ford 9" setup with all the goodies, so it
can be done for less, but not a lot less.  Then there's wheel tubs,
fabrication, rebuild trunk floor, etc, etc.

Feel free to check out the tons of pics and pages of my car at
http://www.prostreetcar.com.
And feel free to ask me questions.  I can give you plenty of lessons
learned on what not to do.

I might even have some parts to sell, such as a narrowed Ford 9"
housing and Detroit Locker.  :-)

take care,

Re: [Chevelle-list] The death of my 454

2006-07-06 Thread Michael Pell

A scattershield is the same as an SFI bellhousing (also known as a
blow-proof bellhousing).

For "dialing it in", you must ensure that the transmission input shaft
is straight into the back of the crankshaft, with a tolerance.
Picture putting a broomstick into a hole.  Now move the broomstick up,
down.side to side, etc.   An input shaft is much the same.
Most of the time things will line up fairly well, but not within
specified tolerences.   Blocks have core shift, bellhousings are
varying quality, varying tolerances, etc, so it's quite common for the
input shaft to NOT be lined up, and not be perpendicular to the block.
When this happens, the trans won't be as easy to install, shifting
quality can be affected, clutch release can be affected, and worse of
all, your input shaft bearing can prematurely wear out.

Check out tech tip #4 on this page for instructions:
http://www.5speedtransmissions.com/techref.html

Yes, hopefully your installation shop will know about this and have
done it.  It's a bit of pain to do, but well worth the effort.
And have them check that the bellhousing front face is square to the
block.  My last install had a block with surface irregularities that
misaligned the bellhousing.    That was tough to figure out.

SFI once stood for SEMA Foundation, Inc. (SEMA is now not involved but SFI
kept the name) and does the standards for racing equipment - bellhousings
being one of those pieces. A scatter shield is basically a term for a
bellhousing that's not suppose to explode but rather contain a
clutch/flywheel explosion. A scatter shield must meet SFI Specs to be
accepted by and X-HRA body.

What Mike meant was that due to manufacturing tolerances, the critical
alignment of bolting the unit to a block may not be exactly aligned due to
the dowel pins in the block not being exact. Most mfgs have offset dowel
pins available that you can use to align the bellhousing perpendicular to
the block insuring the transmission input shaft is dead-on straight with the
crankshaft.

loose from the spot welds and wrapped around my crank, dimpled 2 pistons,
scratched up at least 1 cylinder wall, shaved off the bottom of the oil pump
(that would explain things), and filled up the bottom end with little shiny
metal shavings.

My mechanic/ mistake corrector said it would cost about $6000.00 to get the 454
back to working order and suggested I look at crate motors as a cheaper/better
option. My rebuild on the 454 was done in 1986.

I selected Basko Performance Engines to build a new motor for me as they have a
good reputation and are close to me here in the Phoenix AZ area. They are also
putting a lot of work into my Edelbrock square-port closed-chamber heads.

They are in the process of building me a Merlin "Big M" 565 ci cast iron engine
with a solid roller cam, steel crank and JE pistons. I picked up a new Proform 950cfm
carb and am anxious to get everything back together.

I am currently running a Muncie M-21 but have been looking at the Tremec TKO-600 5-speeds for a while and am contemplating a swap.
My question of the day is: Should I invest in a good blow-proof bell housing while everthing is apart, and if so, which brand is recommended? Will the same bell housing fit both the Muncie and the Tremec?

Thanks for the help and have a safe holiday,
Steve

Re: [Chevelle-list] Wanted - pics of 4-inch and 6-inch cowl hoods

2006-06-19 Thread Michael Pell
I have a 5" Harwood cowl hood on my '69. Not exactly a 71/2, but maybe
close enough for you.

See it here: http://www.prostreetcar.com/69_malibu.html

Some things to keep in mind with a tall cowl FB hood;
1) They warp at the rear corners in the sun/heat, which is typical of
FB hoods.
2) Visibility is really limited, as in I have about a 2-3" "window" to
look through between the cowl and the mirror. Also, the right front
corner of the car is totally obstructed
3) I can't use the windshield washers without cutting the rear lip off
the hood, which I'm not too eager to do for structure/strength reasons
4) The stock hood with cowl seal will block off the engine compartment
air (ie hot air) from entering the cowl vents. I'm going to try a
stock cowl seal, but as it is now, my car feels like the heater is on
once the engine is hot because the engine compartment air comes right
inside.

I really like my hood, but these are just some things I learned the hard
way. The visibility issues can be dealt with, but not the wipers, and
hopefully I can improve the hot air issue.

One cool feature (to me anyway) is that you can put gauges inside the
cowl. Clean look, easy viewing, they don't fade/corrode, and you don't
have to clean them. :-)

Take care,
Mike

If you truly want to go "wicked fast" at the drag strip then you need
an automatic transmission.  A manual is fun, but very difficult to get
really good 60 foot times with at the track.   And if you're at all
serious about "wicked times" then you'll need a good high stall speed,
with a trans brake in an auto trans.

It's just not a simple task to get a manual trans to launch well at the
track, at least not without a well tuned suspension and an adjustable
clutch.

The trick to the GV unit is that
1st over is almost identical to close ratio 2nd gear.  This allows you
to hit first over when you would normall grab second, without having to
clutch or move the shifter.  Then go to 2nd over at the nest shif, then
3rd over, never actually shifting into 4th, although the ratio in 3rd
over is almost 1:1.

While the 4.56s are deep for an
ordianry BB, mine's happiest between 4500-7500 rpm.  If I went to the
TKO I could put 3.55s back in and still have the same total gear ratio
I currently do in first with the 2.20 geared Muncie.  As it is, I'm
only going through the lights at about 6000, where I'd like to be
closer to 7000.

Re: [Chevelle-list] overdrive thoughts

4.56 cogs are a lot of gear of
a big block, unless you're running 1/8" mile. If you run a Gear Vendors
unit, the weak link is still the Muncie trans. Not sure how one would
allow a clutchless 1-2 shift, though. Herb is more familiar with the GV
od unit so maybe he will add his input.
A Tremec TKO-600 would be
strong enough but have heard they don't really like to be powershifted
at 6500+ rpm. The shifter position probably wouldn't be a problem and
very little tunnel work would be required,if any. Cost would be a
wash,too. You wouldn't need a 4.56 cog with their ratios,either.

between 2 possibilities for an overdrive in my 64 and would like some

primary use is dragracing, but I drive to and from the strip, 35 miles
each way.  I'm running nearly 4000 rpm on the freeway to do 65.  My
thoughts are between a Tremec TKO 5 speed or a Gear Vendors overdrive.

Hi Devin,
I have a TKO-600 5sp in my 69, and I love it.   It's behind a 454 also
(roughly 500-550 ft/lbs).
The TKO will bolt right in place of your Muncie, with the following
exceptions:
* You'll need a 26 spline clutch disc
* shortened driveshaft with 1330 series slip yoke installed
* and some tunnel work to get it in.

Beyond that, it's pretty straight forward.
I don't have any real specific details on the 64-7 Chevelles, but it'll
be the same as the 66/67, which is nearly the same as the 68-72s.
:-)

If you want to use the original console, you'll need a 2" offset
shifter , which can be purchased from Forte (through me if you want),
or McLeod also has a 2" offset shifter available.

Your 4.56 gears will be way too much for the 2.87 1st found in the
TKO-600.   You'll want more like a 3.55 - 3.73 range.
Here's some calculators:
http://www.5speedtransmissions.com/calculators.html

and swap details:

And the site has lots of other info. I'd be glad to answer any specific questions you have.

take care,
Mike

way underrated.  I expect that someday I'll end up scattering it.  The
Tremec is much stronger, but I've never seen one installed and really
don't want to move my shifter position, not to mention I don't know how
well they shift at speed.  Anybody running either of these options out
there?
