2011-05-03 Thread Rick Schaefer
No, I've never tried an anodizing kit, I did use an anodizing remover
(BlueLightning Brand) with success. 10-15 years ago I polished the lower
trim on my elky, and the polish job was pretty good, but not great. To
protect it, I spray the pieces with a clear coat product from Eastwood.
The look lasted for a bit, but at this point needs to be redone. I am
currently trying to find time to strip and paint the Elky and when it comes
time for the trim I'll need to make a decision about which way to go, either
D-I-Y or let a pro do it. Cost will definitely be a factor.

For the hood trim, I'm assuming its Pot Metal, check with Superior Plating
or Superior Chrome out of Houston. I left the 2 forward corner trim pieces
from the bed with them this past weekend. Their estimate at the swap meet
was reasonable compared to repro trim and I know that they fit.
As for the bumper $400 does not seem too far out of line for a show
finish.Check with TriCity (I think that is the name) out of Tennesse,
they come highly recommended in the chevelletech forums. Again, with
original you know that there should not be fitment issues.

I know that there are people on this list who know a lot more about this
than I so hopefully someone else will check-in.

in the world won’t save them so I will need to have them re-plated or
replaced. Any suggestions on where to send re-plating, the places I have
used in the past have gotten way out of line on price, they want over $300
to re-plate the molding down the center of the hood and the bumper exchange
that we use is at about $400 a bumper. The new replacement bumpers are only
 $169.

The cloudy finish on the aluminum is the anodizing coating. The anodizing
needs to be removed before the parts can be polished. If you want to
polish them yourself, you can order anodizing remover from many sources (
caswellplating.com for one). Or if you have them polished by a pro,
he/she will know what to do. Then once they are polished, they should be
re-anodized to maintain the finish. Doing it yourself is not rocket
science but it is plenty of work.

As for replacement pieces, its generally recommended to keep your originals
and have them redone. Fit on replacement parts is hit or miss at best.

1- LS type motors will fit in anything.

2-Big (18inch+) wheels DONT belong on classics from the 50's 60's or

3-If a 57 Chevy has Fuel Injection badges on the fender, it is probably
NOT a Rochester unit (see 1 above).

4-Don't throw anything away if it is worn, rusted or generally unusable -
The Rat Rod crowd can find a use for virtually anything. It probably
is as much work to achieve the correct patina on a rat rod as to achieve
a first class paint job on a classic or rod.

5- Many AC Cobra kit car owners insist on listing their vehicles as a 64 or
65and I'm sorry but even as a chevy guy I can't condone an LS

 motor in a Cobra.

6-I like seeing MOPAR street rods with MOPAR propulsion; and Ford Street
rods with a Ford powerplant. I understand that a 350 is cheaperto
 build, but really.

7-An ORIGINAL unmolested 41 Willys Autocar is a cool and rare car in its
 own right.

8-An unrestored (needing it) 52 Pontiac All Steel Woodie Wagon with a 389
should NOT be advertised with the tag line Its Only Original
   Once!

9-Its cool as heck to watch the AutoCross, where an unknown from Kansas
dominates the PRO autocrossers. Including Kyle Stacy from Detroit
Speed, A Hotchkiss Truck, a Camaro built for Spectre and a Mustang from a
Name shop. I don't know how it ended, but at noon on

Friday the unknown had a full second lead in a 40 second or so lap.

10-During the October GoodGuys Event, *I AM* going to take a 150MPH ride
 with the pseudo-NASCAR concession.

11- It is entirely possible to get overloaded with great cars. After 2

Suddenlink (cable) annoys me with their semi-annual , or so it seems,

first run) and a DVR and am paying $100 with the latest increase. Just
seems to me that there are better ways. DISH advertising looks tempting
too.We don't often loose cable service, but a co-worker says that
his DISH is pretty reliable. But as I say I'm hesitant to change, will
the new be any better/different?

Used 60/80 grit with theses 2 tools :

and

I alternated so as to not overwork either and allow the compressor to
cool. BTW compressor is a 60 gallon 5HP Kobalt.

Still need to finish it up, but the remaining paint/primer was coming off
comparatively easy. I am using Norton Mirka paper.

from gouging the metal.

Do I need a 7inch or larger sander? Recommendation on brand? Coarser
paper needed?

what could be the possible cause on a 350 chev engine after sitting over
night the car will not start, it cranks and cranks and i can pump the heck
out of it to no avail, i need to pour a small amount of fuel down the carb,
than it will start and run just fine. if it sits a few hours it will start

What prep work is necessary before I cut install a reproduction patch
panel?I'm thinking that I should at least prime the backside before I
install it. So before I do, seems like I ought to wash it down - WITH
WHAT? and then go over it once with 80 or 120 grit sander. Would treating
the bare metal with some type of ospho metal prep HELP? OR HINDER?

I know that I will need to remove the primer from the immediate area
where I will be welding, how far should I strip it back? I do have
weld-thru primer for the stripped areas. Thanx again.

 http://www.chevelles.com/showroom/showphoto.php/photo/21067/cat/500/ppuser/1865
. I have a patch panel that goes as high as the tape. I am cutting
off the entire length because the inner panel is rusted also and there is no
way that I would be able to deal with that thru the holes I have cut now.

First question - Where should I cut the panel. I'm thinking (dangerous)
that I only need to go as high as the body line located just below the trim
rivets.I like that area because if I do a less than perfect job, it
will be partially hidden by the trim.

Second question ( or statement) - I am going to flange and overlap the
top seam. Should the new panel lie over the original or should the new
panel be tucked under the original?Does it matter? I can get to the
entire backside of that seam thru the access panel in the bed and should be
able to seam seal it pretty well.

Third - any hints/tips on drilling out the spot welds along the
bottom? I bought a special drill for them but my first attempt resulted
in the bit walking. Should I drill a small pilot hole?

 Thats all for today. Thanx

Re: [Chevelle-list] Fuse Block

2010-11-03 Thread Rick Schaefer
Before swapping the fuse block, I would take the 2 halves apart and see what
is going on.I bet that you have corrosion between the contacts. To
disassemble the 2 halves, there is a small bolt (7/16 or so) in the middle
of the engine side of the firewall that needs to be removed.Unless
it is broken/split, the block itself doesn't go bad, the wiring internal
connections are what cause problems.

Also, I think it will be difficult to find someone to sell ONLY the fuse
block. They will try to sell the entire harness. Of course that would
eliminate any defective wiring.

I BELIEVE that an original replacement would be easier to deal with than an
updated version. The wiring color code will be uniform and all connections
will be in the same location. What ever you do, when reassembling be sure
to use plenty of dielectric grease on the contacts and in the fuse block
voids. The grease will keep out moisture dirt to prevent future
problems. Good luck with it.

On Tue, Nov 2, 2010 at 5:44 PM, Brad Waller b...@epage.com wrote:

I think the fuse block on my ’67 is going bad.

I blow fuses randomly for the brakes, and even when I replace the fuse the
brakes sometimes don’t work. Then they do. Either way, the turn signals
always work. This implies the wiring after the fuse block has to be
pretty good and it is either the fuse block or the dash wiring.

The reason I suspect the fuse block over the dash wiring is that I can play
with the fuse and the brake lights will start to work or stop.

Assuming it is the fuse block, am I better off replacing it with a stock
fuse block, or an aftermarket one with modern fuses?

Re: [Chevelle-list] ceramic headers

2010-08-07 Thread Rick Schaefer
I have used Doug Thorley Tri-Y headers ( model 375Y) and am very happy with
fit. I bought them 15 years ago uncoated and had them coated. The Try-Y
headers are suppose to be beneficial for a street vehicle. I think that
they have a coated version now.

I bought Jet Hot Hooker Super Comp headers. They look nice, but easy to

You must have lost a ground while under the dash. Find it and you should

As for the brakes, where the booster and master cylinder both off the grand
prix? On the booster there is a shaft. They can be short or long. They don't
mix and match. A long shaft in a shallow master cylinder can be an issue.
Also when switching from manual to power, you need to move the pin in the
brake pedal to the other hole. If I remember correctly, move to the top
hole, but either way, the OTHER hole.

If you want it all at once, I'd be careful with any supplier. Many will
NOT tell you if an item is backordered unless you specifically ask. I've
never had any direct dealings with OPGI, but they in particular are noted
for back ordering high shipping costs. Most any supplier will put a
kit together for you at a discount. Hinshaws Ausleys are both well
known for customer service. Also Legendary is a new (to Chevelles)
manufacturer of interior parts and apparently they are very high quality.
Again, no direct dealings but I listen when people talk.

Re: [Chevelle-list] 700 R4 Trans

2010-06-20 Thread Rick Schaefer
The 700 can be run without any electronics. If you want to take
advantage of the torque converter lockup you do need 12 volts to the tranny
and a specific solenoid inside. No big deal at all. The lockup will drop
your cruise RPM 2-300RPM. IE cruising at 60MPH and running (for example)
2000RPM, if the converter locks, your RPM will drop to approx 1750. There
are a few companies that sell a lockup kit for less than $100. or you can
search the internet and find specific items that you will need and get the
cost to less than $50.A 700 is a good investment for a daily driver.
BTW - you will need to shorten your driveshaft for the 700.

Good advice, Rick. A reputable local trans shop is the way I'd go,

Ditto on your gear ratio selection... The 2.73 won't cut it with
the overdrive trans. I had 3.08 gears in my '66 wagon w/700R4
trans, and it never was in its sweet spot while cruising @ 70
mph. Changed to a 3.42 and the motor is a lot happier, plus
mileage picked up about 1.5 - 2 mpg to boot! Since less throttle
is now required to maintain any given speed, I had to reprogram
the ECM for my Holley FI system, but it was only small tweaks in
the light cruise mode.

and talk to the shop monday AM. I checked NAPA, AZone Oreilly and
parts were not available. I'll hope that the machine shop can get them
from a local jobber. Thanx all.

Almost everyone got dealer pricing on parts anyway but if a person wanted

Independent machine shops today generally rely (I would gather) on not only
the labor but the markup on the parts as well.

Re: [Chevelle-list] Tires for my 67

2010-05-11 Thread Rick Schaefer
Dales mentioned that real world, tires have differences. Once you select
a size or brand, go to Tirerack.com . Search for your selection, then view
the specs link. They give info on circumfrence, diameter, reommended
width, revs per mile and other stuff too. Very informative.

And if you do decide to go for a larger diameter (than stock) wheel/tire
combo; its really not that difficult to change the drive/driven gears in
your tranny.

Did I spell circumfrence correctly???
On Tue, May 11, 2010 at 8:54 AM, Dale a396...@fidnet.com wrote:

 Wouldn't a 70 series tire give a narrower tread footprint than a 65 series
tire for a given size? A comparable 215/65R15 and 215/70R15 BF Goodrich
Radial T/A shows a 7.0-inch tread width for the 65 series and 6.4-inch read
 width for the 70 series.

Technically the blanket statement that *any* tire size change will affect
your speedometer reading is correct but as long as you keep the overall
diameter within .1 or .2 of the original, you shouldn't notice a
 difference.
Even with the 205/65R15 your speedometer will only read 0.1% too fast. At
 a
real 65mph *real* speed your speedometer will read 65.65. A taller
205/70R15 is .8 taller and will make your speedometer 3.1% too slow; a
65mph reading on your speedometer would really be 67mph.

I've owned a lot of 67 Chevelles and if you can read their sweep
speedometers within 2mph, you're doing pretty good! :*)

You might check my web page at
 http://chevellestuff.com/tools/tire_calc.htm.
Just plug in the 195/75R14 in the Stock tire size and play with the New
 tire
size. It'll compare Sidewall, Radius, Diameter, Circumference, and Revs
 per
mile for each size and report how slow or fast your speedometer will read
 as
 a percentage.

One should be aware that 'calculations' don't always reflect the real world
and tire manufacturer's differ a bit and many tire sizes just aren't
 readily
available. Looking at the same BF Goodrich Radial T/A chart doesn't list a
205/65R15 size but does list a 225/60R15 which is .1-inch taller and would
make your speedometer read 0.4% too slow. Play with the calculator then
find your favorite tire mfg and see what they offer.

I agree with your tire size selection, try to go with a 70 series size tire
to widen the stance a little bit. Any tire size change will effect your
speedo. You will need to change driven/drive gears once you select your
 tires.

would like your opinions. I have a 65 Chevelle and it currently has a 350

stroke the engine by a local engine builder. Plans are to do the rebuild
this summer because he builds alot of racing engines and winter is his busy
time. He said it will have between 425 to 450 horsepower.
I want to put in a 700R4 transmission for better highway cruising. I
have looked at many different transmission companies. Has anyone ever used
Monster transmission? They seem to have decent prices and kits to complete
 the conversion.
I would also like to upgrade to front disc brakes. Brakes really confuse
me. I see a really big range of prices. I do not need the high end brakes
just better than drums can offer.
I am also thinking about a March serpentine belt system. Of course, next
comes the rear end rebuild with a posi-unit. Any suggestions on gear ratio?

Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated,

Agree with Dale, there are many reputable tranny builders acrossed the
country. I'd find one within an easy drive. Anyone, no matter how
experienced, can turn out a unit that goes sour. Much easier to resolve a
problem face to face than to have to pull a defective tranny ship it back
somewhere. What is your location, maybe someone will have a recommendation
that is local to you.

Depends on where you are as to what shop I'd recommend for a 700R4 - or

horsepower unit (up to 450hp is just under $1800 -
 http://www.phoenixtrans.com/html/gmtrans.html. Naturally if you're
nowhere close by Texas, I'm sure there are other shops just as capable.

There are a lot of aftermarket disc brake companies as well and most are
pretty good. Building a high horsepower engine, you shouldn't skimp on
brakes. Expect a good disc brake setup to run anywhere from $700 to $1500
depending on company. Don't settle for some $395 eBay special. Baer is on
the higher end but have excellent products. MP Brakes (mpbrakes.com),
Classic Performance (classicperform.com), Inline Tube (inlinetube.com),
and I'm sure there are more offer basic kits from around $700 up or a bit
more if you want power disc.

Your tire size will have some effect on the rear end gear you might want to
choose. A page at my site,
 http://chevellestuff.com/tools/rpm_calculator.htm, will let you play
around with tire sizes and rear end ratios based on your transmission
selection. Transmission gear ratios are shown for the most popular GM
transmissions; just plug in your rear tire size (such as 235x60x15), a rear
axle ratio (like 3.55), a highway speed (like 75mph) and it'll calculate
your RPM. Be aware there will some slippage with an automatic so numbers
won't be exact but they'll be relative regardless of ratio, tire size, etc.
 selected.

Taking my car for example, TH350, 3.36 rear end, 235x60x15 tires and at
75mph it calculates to 3245 rpm where my tach shows about 3500. Changing to
a 700R4 (and nothing else) with the overdrive ratio the rpms drop calculates
to 2270 at 75mph. I could run as low as a 4.56 gear and still only be
 turning 3100 at 75mph with the o/d.

anyone know a link that I can get a factory wiring diagram or can someone

button down all my wiring and its doing some goofy things. like not
getting any power anywhere, and yes I've checked all my fuses and such I'm
thinking a ground that I'm missing. I would also like to have a factory
diagram for the fact my car was originally an A/C car and since it was all
gone when I got it, its going to stay that way!! Anyway any help would be
 greatly appreciated. Thanks

[Chevelle-list] BackDrive

2010-01-02 Thread Rick Schaefer
I'm installing a console floor shifter in my 72 this winter. The
shifter has the neutral safety/ backup light switch on it. Yet factory
manual also shows a backdrive assembly. For what purpose? Lock the
column?

Can I use the stock column shift linkage as a backdrive? If so, do
I need the shifter mounted switch at all?Seems like if the back drive is
moving the column it would also actuate the column mounted neutral/backup
switch.

Will the bracket that connects the column shift rod assembly to the side
of the tranny, work with the cable setup of the floor shifter? Aftermarket
part seems different.

Went to install new front brake shoes
and found that my inner wheel bearing was stuck to the
  spindle. Here's the short version...

Tried to pry the bearing off, which caused the bearing to
  fall apart

Bought the biggest pair of channel lock pliers I could
find, heated the inner race w/ a propane torch (get it as
hot as possible) and was able to wrestle it off (sounds much
simpler than it was). Cleaned the spindle w/ coarse then
fine emery cloth. Let the spindle cool and test fit the new
bearing to make sure it slides on off (put some grease
  on the spindle). Everything's cool.

So, if this ever happens to you don't panic. Best way to
get the old bearing off is to try to pry it and if it breaks
apart use a torch and a big channel lock to get the race
  off.

If you need to cut the race, obviously avoid the threaded
part of the spindle and if you scratch the back part where
the bearing sits, clean it up w/ emery cloth. It won't kill
the spindle but obviously try not to gouge it. It helps to
get the race at least a little bit away from the backing
  plate.

Don't strike the spindle w/ a hammer. If you have to hammer
or chisel, work toward the backing plate. Don't apply force
  to the spindle.

  John Nasta

how bad it really is. I'll be asking for support soon.

sealed on the other side. Personally I have done both but never bothered to
clean up the welds. The second argues that the floor is not as strong when
 butt-welded.

 What is your preferred method?

Be careful with the length of the screws you install. Years ago I

Just a little caveat emptor... When I built the engine for my El Camino 4

It rotted from the inside and developed a hole, which caused a bad leak.
Today I bought the good old fashioned cast one and the walls of it are
substantially thicker. I was lucky not to get stuck somewhere. I first
noticed it when I was just moving the car from one side of the street to the

As for testing the gages, I can't be much help. It took me 4 tries,

I can make is to place a box on the floor on the passenger side, drop the
column onto the seat and place a blanket over it. Set the dash on these and
make sure everything works before you bolt it back up. I had a tough time
getting the dash lights to contact the repop printed circuit. If I turned
