If it is just the front bearing or clutch, replace them rather than the
entire compressor, they can be replaced without the recovery, evacuation,
and refill of the refrigerant. You may also just be low on refrigerant or a
bad switch causing the compressor to not stay engaged and that rattling can
make you think the compressor is bad. If you do need a compressor I would
stick with the delco, but I biased, I have worked at a GM dealer over 40

Hi everybody,

Unfortunately I have what seems to be a collapsed lifter in my 69 El
Camino. If I try to adjust it, I can turn it until it stops tapping,
and then when I try to go the additional quarter turn, it starts
tapping again.

My question is, does the year of the block matter, or are all SBC
lifters basically the same? It is a 1958 283 engine block. Most auto
parts store computers only go back to 1968. What was the last year for
the 283?

I need to buy my parts and I want to make sure there aren't any
problems/surprises.

I looked up the 1958 283 engine specs here. It says:

Valve Lift Zero Lash: Intake: .398 Exhaust: .398

http://www.secondchancegarage.com/public/628.cfm

Also my parts list is:

intake gasket set
sillycone
valve cover gasket set
oil filter
lifter set (may as well change them all)

Am I missing anything?

Thanks,

Re: [Chevelle-list] 69 chevelle

2011-05-07 Thread Jim Thompson
Let me back track. My 65 does have a vin plate on the driver side post. It
has so many layers of paint I could not see it at first. Second, vin were
standardized in 1979 before that each manufacture had their own system.

To: The Chevelle Mailing List
Subject: Re: [Chevelle-list] 69 chevelle

There seems to be some confusion about the different plates we all are
talking about here so here is a brief description of each to help.

The 65-67 Chevelles has the VIN tag on the left front door hinge pillar.
68-72 are on the left dash visible through the windshield. This is the tag
that identifies your car with the DMV for licensing, ownership, etc. It is
illegal to tamper with or remove this tag. There are several places you can
find the hidden VIN's on these cars. Since the frames can be changed,
probably the best place would be on the fire wall under the heater blower.

The tag on the left hand portion of the cowl is the trim tag. This tag
gives you body build date, trim codes,Model year and ID, interior style,
body color, etc. Most restorers feel this tag is also very important to the
car but it will not suffice for a VIN tag with the DMV and it is not illegal
to remove.

The protect-o-plate is a plate that came with your classic when it was new.
It came in a cardboard pamphlet in your glovebox. It was used for warrantee
purposes. It is coded for all the options on your car and thus can identify
an SS for 69-72 when SS was simply an option. Other Chevelles 65-68 an SS
can be identified in the VIN code.

The build sheets were sheets with all the specific cars options so the guys
on the line knew how to build each individual car. They were to be thrown
away after they were used but many guys simply stuffed them in the seats,
doors, above the glove box or gas tank and anywhere else they could hide
them. So if you can't find your build sheet it's because someone else did
many years ago and tossed it or the guys on the line that day were doing
their job correctly and disposing of your sheets correctly. These sheets
have all your options on them and thus can identify a real 69-72 SS.

There are other ways to identify an SS Chevelle from 69-72 such as unique
paint codes, engines with matching VINs, W in the VIN of the 72's, etc. But
the build sheet is the gold standard.

Hope this clarifies a few things.

Tony

sitting out as proud as it used to. Old methods used butyl tape that gave
just the right fit. When using the new sealers the installer must make sure
he applies the proper size bead to bring the window out to it's correct

I looked at some of the pics I took on tear down. There are two tabs one is
just below the steering column where the fire wall bends back, The second is
on the side of the trans tunnel across from the floor drain plug. I have a
munci and it is on the passenger side of the tunnel. The cable comes across
and over the trans.

Haven't had any activity for a while so I thought I would start it off with
some technical questions

I am replacing the master cylinder on my 65 L79 malibu with Manual Brakes.
(The original cylinder is to pitted to rebuild). It came with a 1 inch
cylinder but as I am looking for a new one I see that the HD brakes used a
7/8 cylinder. As far as I can tell the rest of the components are the same.
Am I better off using the original 1 or will I gain anything with the 7/8.
I am restoring this vehicle back to original, it is far from numbers
matching but I want everything to look as original as possible. There are
quite a few different manufactures but the original delco is not available
any suggestions on what to buy, Dorman, A1 Cardone, Centric, Reybestos,
Bendix, or Wagner.

I also just realized that when I replaced the floor I didn't replace the
return spring retainer that is welded in. can anyone give me a measurement
for the correct location, just the distance from the Heel or toe bends
at the lower cowl area, this would have been a lot easier while it was on
the rotisserie rather than back on the frame. I also omitted the speedo
cable retainers if someone can give me an idea where they were originally
locsated.

This is a short video of a new Ford plant in Brazil . One look at this

It will also point out why more assembly plants will go offshore.
You won't doubt that Ford, GM, and Chrysler are destined to go under,

They will survive, but their assembly operations in the U.S. likely

I do not understand why everyone always points the finger at the union work
for the decline of the auto industry. The union workers only ask for their
slice of the pie, so they can provide a good living for their families.
After all, it is upper and middle management that directs what products will
be, designs them, and sets the direction the company will take. If they
design junk, the union workers just assemble the product as designed. Funny,
I never hear about management's big salaries and their large bonuses they
get regardless of how their company does. Bonuses should be tied to the
performance of the company. Management needs to set the example and be
honest. Also the dealer's service department plays an important part. If
they don't provide good service (several trips to fix the same problem and
charge the customer each time) the customer will go elsewhere. Service will
always sell not matter what the industry is.

The fuse has nothing to do with the brakes. Check the brake light switch on
the pedal bracket. The wires going to the switch maybe rubbing and grounding
out.

You could bypass the block and use an inline fuse. The short could be at one
of the bulb sockets. Try tracing the short with a probe test light.

I think the fuse block on my '67 is going bad.

I blow fuses randomly for the brakes, and even when I replace the fuse the
brakes sometimes don't work. Then they do. Either way, the turn signals
always work. This implies the wiring after the fuse block has to be pretty
good and it is either the fuse block or the dash wiring.

The reason I suspect the fuse block over the dash wiring is that I can play
with the fuse and the brake lights will start to work or stop.

Assuming it is the fuse block, am I better off replacing it with a stock
fuse block, or an aftermarket one with modern fuses?

Retorqueing after thermal cycling is a good idea but not brass nuts, they are
too soft and may strip out.

The only reason a carbon gasket will fail is if air/exhaust is able to pass by
it causing it to oxidize. I would take a real close look at your flanges. Are
they lining up properly? Is there any nicks or any other imperfections in the
mating surfaces that may cause mis-alinement's? You would be looking for any
cuts or burrs that would damage the integrity of your sealing media.

Tighten your bolts in sequence, assuring that you have a even compression of
the gasket. Torque in increments 1/3 of the end result you wish to achieve and
then once around to check. Whenever you touch one bolt, it changes to values of
the other two.

Hope this helps.

I have used Doug Thorley Tri-Y headers ( model 375Y) and am very happy with
fit. I bought them 15 years ago uncoated and had them coated. The Try-Y
headers are suppose to be beneficial for a street vehicle. I think that
they have a coated version now.

I bought Jet Hot Hooker Super Comp headers. They look nice, but easy to

Re: [Chevelle-list] brakes/fuel gauge

2010-07-15 Thread Jim Thompson
The proportioning valve balances the front to rear brakes. Under hard to
moderate braking the car will nose dive or the rear brakes will lock if the
valve is incorrect. If you feel even braking front to rear, your are fine.

Some times the whole gauge cluster needs to be grounded. Simply connect a
wire from a screw in the cluster to a solid place on the dash or firewall.

Also check the ground on the sending unit at the tank.

Well, Kim was right, my booster was jusk, replaced it and now every thing
seems ok, i did not swap the porportioning valve over from the donor car,
should i do that? (this is the block on the framewhere all the line run
correct?) i assumed the porportioning valve was the round valve that i
swapped over that was right under the master cyl that was about 3-4 long.

also i checked the fuel gauge connections at the dash and in the back, all
seems ok, when i ground the wire in the back the gauge drops down to E so
what does this mean? a bad sender?

Good advice, Rick. A reputable local trans shop is the way I'd go, too.

Ditto on your gear ratio selection... The 2.73 won't cut it with the
overdrive trans. I had 3.08 gears in my '66 wagon w/700R4 trans, and it
never was in its sweet spot while cruising @ 70 mph. Changed to a 3.42
and the motor is a lot happier, plus mileage picked up about 1.5 - 2 mpg to
boot! Since less throttle is now required to maintain any given speed, I
had to reprogram the ECM for my Holley FI system, but it was only small
tweaks in the light cruise mode.

Also with 2.73 gears and overdrive you'll be cruising at 1200RPM (more or

Is there any way to rebuild a 65 chevelle steering column? There must

Re: [Chevelle-list] wiring question

2010-02-03 Thread Jim Thompson
Just a few questions. Can you start the engine? Are you sure the gauges are
wired correctly?

I understand your confusion, just went through this myself.

I will start with the temp gauge. The sender is screwed into your block, head
or manifold. This contact grounds the sending unit. The ground is not complete
until it gets hot when a bimetal contact expands inside the sender. The wire to
the sender goes to the back of the gauge. The other wire on the gauge goes to
the fuse block and is hot in the “on” mode. In a stock GM harness several hot
leads come together and are simply twisted and soldiered in a bunch with tape
wrapped around it. If you have a test light check both sides of the fuse with
the key on and off. If the light goes on and off at the fuse box using the key
repeat the test at the back of the gauge. If the light fails at the back of the
gauge try using a jumper wire straight from the fuse box. If this fails run a
wire to the sending unit. If this fails replace sending unit.

The secret is start where you know you have power test each link until you lose
the power then back track.

The sender has a float like the one in your toilet. As it goes up and down the
resistance changes. Under the carpet is a flat harness that has a connector
under the dash and under the back seat. The tan wire can be tested at both
locations, these do not usually fail. So if you have power at the gas tank
sending unit skip, testing those connections.

The fuel gauge sender has one tan wire (hot) and one black ground. Check the
tan wire with the test light. Turn the key to “on’ before you get under the
car. If it is hot at the sender I would make sure the ground wire is good. The
test light ground wire should be clipped on the sender where the normal ground
wire is attached and the probe inserted into the connector on the tan wire this
way you test your ground. If it fails move the ground of the test light to some
part of the body. If it works then I would replace the end of the ground wire
and clean all the rust around the screw hole in the body. One trip under the
car is enough.

If all this does not help I would suspect that you have wired the gauges
incorrectly.

principles of operation here. I dont understand how they work.I hope someone

I will suggest again that ground is critical. Your fuel sending unit should
have its own ground wire. The temp sending unit is hot, internally the switch
closes to ground. With the key to “on” both should be hot. Your fuse box should
have one fuse marked “gauges” if it is hot on both sides. Then it is a ground
issue or short in the gauge harness.

I would suggest disconnecting the tan fuel sender feed wire at the fuel tank.
Turn the key to RUN position and wait a few moments (some gauges are slow) with
the tan wire disconnected the fuel gauge should read past full. Then ground the
tan wire anywhere to the body and the gauge should read empty. If you get no

If you want to check the gauges, send 12 volts directly to them and see if the
needle moves. If the needle moves, the gauges is good and there are wiring
issues elsewhere. I’ve seen brand new sending units fail. There should be 12
volts at the bulkhead connector with the key in the run position for all wiring
to the gauges.

Is the fuel sending unit grounded to the body? If the temp gauge isn’t

Are the gauges new? How about the dash harness and the engine harness? Did the
gauges work before you made your changes? The reason I ask is that the pins are
in different locations at the firewall. If one harness is from a 70 and one
from a 71-72 that may cause your problem.

I had a hell of a time with the dash in my 70. Must have pulled it out and put
it back in 6 times. Make sure that you have the three black ground wires hooked
up. One goes to a screw on the cluster, one to the metal frame of the dash

My problem turned out to be the headlight switch. Power to the cluster passes

not making contact. Here is the topic on chevelles.com. It has some great pics

You may also buy premade ends that can be spliced on to the old lines with a

Re: [Chevelle-list] winter storage

2009-10-14 Thread Jim H. Thompson
Are you using a quality car cover? Many have a moisture layer. If you raise
the car up use jack stands under the boxed part of the frame. I suggest
using one layer of cinderblock covered by a one inch piece of plywood under
the jack stand since the car is on dirt not concrete. Just use plastic
sheeting from the hardware store the same kind that you would use under the
house.

Since there will not be any liquids in the block the temp does not matter.
If the garage is connected to the house consider building a clean room using
some 2x4 and plastic sheeting on wall the that is next to the house. You
will be surprised how a small space heater will work in plastic lean-to.
Also a halogen work light kicks off a bunch of heat.

I realize this has probably been asked a hundred times but hope you can shed
some light on the issue. I have an outdoor car port the ones with metal
poles and a tarp on top. My question is there anything to put over the
ground to help with the winterization. I have heard of putting down straw or
hay but think they would just retain moisture. The ground is clear of any
growth and is plain dirt. Is it preferred to put the car on blocks or just
let it sit as is on the rubber.

Also wondering what kind of problems would I run into if I were to rebuild
the engine in the garage while the garage is not continuously heated? I live
in eastern Canada and have but a few weeks left.

If the driver of the 59 had no seat belt maybe he would have died. If you
look through the passenger side window the dash board is intact and the 09
pivots on the corner of the driver side firewall. The whipping action of the
09 swinging around and striking the driver's door looks bad but remember how
big that front seat is and how much distance there is between the steering
column and the door.

I got some news for you therre skippy. That 2009 car is built from much
stronger metal than the 59 Impala is. Not to mention the 2009 car is much
more structurally sound than the 59 as well as the fact that the metal in
the 59 has had 50 years to begin deteriorating. News cars are designed so
the passenger compartment doesn't crush and it did it's job. That video is
very real. If you were driving the 59 Impala in that video..you'd be dead,

replacing it and it keeps blowing. Is it possible that its also feeding the
temp and fuel guages. and maby a bad printed curcuit is blowing the fuse.

terminal for the fuel guage. The temp guage did not move from its pegged
position. Iam stumped as to why there is no voltage at # 11 and Iam thinking
that my temp guage my be no good. Whats your opinions. Thanks Bob

 Bob,

The fitting above the oil filter is for your sending unit and the wire is
 blue.

As for testing the gages, I can't be much help. It took me 4 tries, pulling
the dash each time to get everything working in mine. One suggestion I can
make is to place a box on the floor on the passenger side, drop the column
onto the seat and place a blanket over it. Set the dash on these and make
sure everything works before you bolt it back up. I had a tough time getting
the dash lights to contact the repop printed circuit. If I turned them to
their positive stop, the brass contacts would pass the brass on the circuit.

Have you had your car to any shows or cruise-in's yet this year? I have had
 mine out but just cruizin.

 Thanks, Dan

Could some body tell me how to test a temp. guage and a fuel guage. My temp

neither one works, so if I go into the dash to replace the printed curcuit,
Is there a way to test the guages to see if there going to work with a new

be greatly appriciated. One more thing, there is a connection just above the
oil filter. Its an angled fitting. Is this where the oil press. sending unit

Here they are:

- Car and Driver 2004: 69 SS 396 red convertible with black top and black

In the process of sticking the BB in my 65 Chevelle, and the front engine
mounts don't line up. The new engine has a Moroso pan #20412.
The Jegs catalog says it fits Big Block Chevy engines (except Gen V and Gen
VI) in most chassis except 1962-67 Chevy II, V8 Vega/Monza, and
1955-57 Chevy.

The front engine mount is more than a 1 back from the stock location, and
the pan is against the rear of the cross member. When I switched from SB to
BB I do not recall changing the front mounts, but I may be wrong. Is there
another engine mount available. Has anyone run across this problem?

Re: [Chevelle-list] OT: The Best Radiator Type

2009-04-27 Thread Jim H. Thompson
A clean one. Copper or aluminum makes little difference if it is the correct
size. Flushing the cooling system and replacing a thermostat is a good
start.

If the hoses are 4 years old replace. If the fan is belt driven make sure it
is not slipping. Again if it is a few years old replace. If you have an
electric fan put a thermometer in the radiator and see when the fan kicks
on.

Just loosen the distributor bolt, pick it up, and turn it clockwise to the
next gear tooth, and drop it in. If it doesn't drop all the way in, rotate
the engine and it will drop in when the oil pump gear aligns.
Fire it up and set the timing. If it way off, go back the other way and use
the same method.
