EEC will have 3 5/16" tube connectors on the top front of the tank. One in each corner & 1 in the middle. They connect to a vapor recovery module located above the rear axle. I just checked rockauto.com for you. They have a new drum/drum Bendix M/C for a 68 Malibu for less than $45.00 and many rebuilds for half that. Course NEW may have been on the shelf 40+ years. Re: [Chevelle-list] (no subject)
No, I've never tried an anodizing kit, I did use an anodizing remover (BlueLightning Brand) with success. 10-15 years ago I polished the lower trim on my elky, and the polish job was pretty good, but not great. To protect it, I spray the pieces with a clear coat product from Eastwood. The look lasted for a bit, but at this point needs to be redone. I am currently trying to find time to strip and paint the Elky and when it comes time for the trim I'll need to make a decision about which way to go, either D-I-Y or let a pro do it. Cost will definitely be a factor. For the hood trim, I'm assuming its Pot Metal, check with Superior Plating or Superior Chrome out of Houston. I left the 2 forward corner trim pieces from the bed with them this past weekend. Their estimate at the swap meet was reasonable compared to repro trim and I know that they fit. As for the bumper $400 does not seem too far out of line for a "show" finish.Check with TriCity (I think that is the name) out of Tennesse, they come highly recommended in the chevelletech forums. Again, with original you know that there should not be fitment "issues". I know that there are people on this list who know a lot more about this than I so hopefully someone else will check-in. Re: [Chevelle-list] (no subject)
The cloudy finish on the aluminum is the anodizing coating. The anodizing needs to be removed before the parts can be polished. If you want to polish them yourself, you can order anodizing remover from many sources ( caswellplating.com for one). Or if you have them polished by a pro, he/she will know what to do. Then once they are polished, they should be re-anodized to maintain the finish. Doing it yourself is not rocket science but it is plenty of work. As for replacement pieces, its generally recommended to keep your originals and have them redone. Fit on replacement parts is hit or miss at best. Thats close to what I did. I googled headlight adjustment and found a pretty simple procedure. In general back the car a set distance back from door, and adjust to a certain height & spread. I saw the Willys Truck also-the re-paint took it out of the coupes class - but still nice to see an unmolested 41. To me both seemed like a 4/5 scale model of a 40 Ford. I didn't realize that they were "compact" We think alike when it comes to the MOPAR Super Stockers. The one had its hood perched up on the roof -Just like the good ole days at Islip speedway. I took a pic of the Lancer - Was talking with a young couple whose last name was Lancer -they were fascinated by the name - Once I pointed out the tri-tone paint they were really fascinated, they hadn't noticed. Last thing I didn't mention before, I noticed maybe 4 or 5 National Chevelle Owners Association window decals, but not one from ACES - I might have just missed them but it struck me as a bit odd. Maybe we can meetup in OCT. [Chevelle-list] GoodGuys Ft Worth
Spent 2 mornings there. Had a great time. Don't know whether I'm inspired to get my elky back on the road or discouraged by the high quality of workmanship on display. I also learned several things: 1- LS type motors will fit in anything. 2-Big (18inch+) wheels DON"T belong on classics from the 50's 60's or 70's. 3-If a 57 Chevy has "Fuel Injection" badges on the fender, it is probably NOT a Rochester unit (see 1 above). 4-Don't throw anything away if it is worn, rusted or generally unusable - The "Rat Rod" crowd can find a use for virtually anything. It probably is as much work to achieve the "correct" patina on a rat rod as to achieve a first class paint job on a classic or rod. 5- Many AC Cobra kit car owners insist on listing their vehicles as a 64 or 65and I'm sorry but even as a chevy guy I can't condone an LS motor in a Cobra. 6-I like seeing MOPAR street rods with MOPAR propulsion; and Ford Street rods with a Ford powerplant. I understand that a 350 is cheaperto build, but really. 7-An ORIGINAL unmolested 41 Willys Autocar is a cool and rare car in its own right. 8-An unrestored (needing it) 52 Pontiac All Steel Woodie Wagon with a 389 should NOT be advertised with the tag line "Its Only Original Once"! 9-Its cool as heck to watch the AutoCross, where an unknown from Kansas dominates the "PRO" autocrossers. Including Kyle & Stacy from Detroit Speed, A Hotchkiss Truck, a Camaro built for Spectre and a Mustang from a "Name" shop. I don't know how it ended, but at noon on Friday the unknown had a full second lead in a 40 second or so lap. 10-During the October GoodGuys Event, *I AM* going to take a 150MPH ride with the pseudo-NASCAR concession. 11- It is entirely possible to get overloaded with great cars. After 2 or 3 hours they started looking very similar. Maybe I'm just getting to be a grouchy ole man [?] Rick Schaefer 72 TPI El Camino <<330.gif>>
Re: [Chevelle-list] OT:Test E-mail
I'm on ATT DSL at a premium level, its an extra $5 or $10 a month. I'm pretty sure that my download speed would be acceptable for video. I'm also usually slow to accept change. I still pay 99% of my bills by mail. Suddenlink (cable) annoys me with their semi-annual , or so it seems, rate hikes. I've got their expanded basic service, one movie tier (not first run) and a DVR and am paying $100 with the latest increase. Just seems to me that there are better ways. DISH advertising looks tempting too.We don't often loose cable service, but a co-worker says that his DISH is pretty reliable. But as I say I'm hesitant to change, will the new be any better/different? Anyway, just ramblin out loud. I know that there are options for internet access too. [Chevelle-list] Sanding
Is a pain in the butt! I'm either doing it wrong or have the wrong equipment. It took me 3 hours to sand the clearcoat, paint, primer and MOST of the factory paint from *ONE* of my elky fenders.I don't think it should take that long. Used 60/80 grit with theses 2 tools : http://www.amazon.com/Ingersoll-Rand-4151-6-Inch-Vacuum-Pnuematic/dp/B4XOT6/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=industrial&qid=1291834205&sr=8-1 and http://www.amazon.com/Porter-Cable-7336-6-Inch-Variable-Random/dp/B222YH I alternated so as to not overwork either and allow the compressor to cool. BTW compressor is a 60 gallon 5HP Kobalt. Still need to finish it up, but the remaining paint/primer was coming off comparatively easy. I am using Norton & Mirka paper. I also bought a sanding backer for my grinder but it was difficult to keep from gouging the metal. Do I need a 7inch or larger sander? Recommendation on brand? Coarser paper needed? I want to do the entire car and finish it in this lifetime, Thanx. -- Rick Schaefer 72 TPI El Camino

Re: [Chevelle-list] Quarter Panel Repair - PREP PATCH PANEL
What prep work is necessary before I cut & install a reproduction patch panel?I'm thinking that I should at least prime the backside before I install it. So before I do, seems like I ought to wash it down - WITH WHAT? and then go over it once with 80 or 120 grit sander. Would treating the bare metal with some type of ospho metal prep HELP? OR HINDER? I know that I will need to remove the primer from the immediate area where I will be welding, how far should I strip it back? I do have weld-thru primer for the stripped areas. Thanx again. [Chevelle-list] Quarter Panel Repair
This will probably be the first of many messages as I attempt to repair this http://www.chevelles.com/showroom/showphoto.php/photo/21067/cat/500/ppuser/1865 . I have a patch panel that goes as high as the tape. I am cutting off the entire length because the inner panel is rusted also and there is no way that I would be able to deal with that thru the holes I have cut now. First question - Where should I cut the panel. I'm thinking (dangerous) that I only need to go as high as the body line located just below the trim rivets.I like that area because if I do a less than perfect job, it will be partially hidden by the trim. Second question ( or statement) - I am going to flange and overlap the top seam. Should the new panel lie over the original or should the new panel be tucked under the original?Does it matter? I can get to the entire backside of that seam thru the access panel in the bed and should be able to seam seal it pretty well. Third - any hints/tips on drilling out the spot welds along the bottom? I bought a special drill for them but my first attempt resulted in the bit walking. Should I drill a small pilot hole? Thats all for today. Thanx Rick Schaefer 72 TPI El Camino

[Chevelle-list] Primer Gun
I need a gun to spray PPG epoxy primer. The info sheet for the primer I will be using says to use a 1.3-1.6 tip.In general from what I've read, primers usuallycall for 1.8 or above ( again in general from what I've read).I'm gonna order this gun http://www.powertool-box.com/product.php?productid=17085&cat=630&page=1 Description says it is for sealers -- this gun http://www.powertool-box.com/product.php?productid=17086&cat=630&page=1 says its for primers. Which recommendation do I go with - Paint supplier or Gun manufacturer? Thanx Rick Schaefer 72 TPI El Camino
Re: [Chevelle-list] Fuse Block
Before swapping the fuse block, I would take the 2 halves apart and see what is going on.I bet that you have corrosion between the contacts. To disassemble the 2 halves, there is a small bolt (7/16 or so) in the middle of the engine side of the firewall that needs to be removed.Unless it is broken/split, the block itself doesn't go bad, the wiring & internal connections are what cause problems. Also, I think it will be difficult to find someone to sell ONLY the fuse block. They will try to sell the entire harness. Of course that would eliminate any defective wiring. I BELIEVE that an original replacement would be easier to deal with than an updated version. The wiring color code will be uniform and all connections will be in the same location. What ever you do, when reassembling be sure to use plenty of dielectric grease on the contacts and in the fuse block voids. The grease will keep out moisture & dirt to prevent future problems. Good luck with it. I have used Doug Thorley Tri-Y headers ( model 375Y) and am very happy with fit. I bought them 15 years ago uncoated and had them coated. The Try-Y headers are suppose to be beneficial for a street vehicle. I think that they have a coated version now. Re: [Chevelle-list] Discount Codes/Interiors
If you want it all at once, I'd be careful with any supplier. Many will NOT tell you if an item is backordered unless you specifically ask. I've never had any direct dealings with OPGI, but they in particular are noted for back ordering & high shipping costs. Most any supplier will put a "kit" together for you at a discount. Hinshaws & Ausleys are both well known for customer service. Also Legendary is a new (to Chevelles) manufacturer of interior parts and apparently they are very high quality. Again, no direct dealings but I listen when people talk. On Fri, Jun 25, 2010 at 5:23 PM, wrote: > YearOne code HEAT3 > > In a message dated 6/25/2010 3:40:48 P.M. Re: [Chevelle-list] 700 R4 Trans
The 700 can be run without any electronics. If you want to take advantage of the torque converter lockup you do need 12 volts to the tranny and a specific solenoid inside. No big deal at all. The lockup will drop your cruise RPM 2-300RPM. IE cruising at 60MPH and running (for example) 2000RPM, if the converter locks, your RPM will drop to approx 1750. There are a few companies that sell a lockup kit for less than $100. or you can search the internet and find specific items that you will need and get the cost to less than $50.A 700 is a good investment for a daily driver. BTW - you will need to shorten your driveshaft for the 700. I'd go with someone fairly close to you. No matter how good the rep, something can go wrong with a tranny from any builder. And then its a pain ($$$) to ship back & forth for repairs. In the Dallas area I know both Phoenix Transmissions & Jakeshoe are reputable builders. And I've heard lots of good about Bowtie Overdrives in CA.So where are you located would be a good thing to know. Also with 2.73 gears and overdrive you'll be cruising at 1200RPM (more or less) - probably not the sweet spot for most motors. Search for your selection, then view the "specs" link. They give info on circumfrence, diameter, reommended width, revs per mile and other stuff too. Very informative. And if you do decide to go for a larger diameter (than stock) wheel/tire combo; its really not "that" difficult to change the drive/driven gears in your tranny. Did I spell circumfrence correctly??? I googled 2004 Blazer wheels and according to at least one source, they have an offset of neg 20 mm. I couldn't find an offset for chevelle wheels Dale has a thorough explaination of Offset & Backspacing here: http://www.chevellestuff.com/tech/wheel_offset.htm You might want to read thru it, measure the wheels you have now and try to decide. I didn't look at the specific kits, but the chevelle spindles 68-72 are identical to the camaro spindles 67-69.66-67 chevelle may be same also. The difference is the BOLT-ON steering arm. Agree with Dale, there are many reputable tranny builders acrossed the country. I'd find one within an easy drive. Anyone, no matter how experienced, can turn out a unit that goes sour. Much easier to resolve a problem face to face than to have to pull a defective tranny & ship it back somewhere. What is your location, maybe someone will have a recommendation that is local to you. [Chevelle-list] BackDrive
I'm installing a console & floor shifter in my 72 this winter. The shifter has the neutral safety/ backup light switch on it. Yet factory manual also shows a backdrive assembly. For what purpose? Lock the column? Can I use the stock column shift linkage as a backdrive? If so, do I need the shifter mounted switch at all?Seems like if the back drive is moving the column it would also actuate the column mounted neutral/backup switch. Will the bracket that connects the column shift rod assembly to the side of the tranny, work with the cable setup of the floor shifter? Aftermarket part seems different. Re: [Chevelle-list] Chevelle in mag.
Nice story Dan, Your car looks identical to my first exposure to a muscle car. My brother bought a bright red, 360HP '66 SS new. As I recall, he special ordered it to go FAST. Only option was a radio.Half way thru the order process, the Dealer/Salesman said "You really don't want to make any money on this deal". He often says that the wait was the longest 6 weeks of his life. Congrats on your ride and great selection of a Life partner who understands your obsession. I'm gonna guess that Scoggin-Dickey & RacingJunk are running a legitimate contest. But someone is contacting people thru email phishing for info, using the contest as a come-on. Re: [Chevelle-list] Good By Cruisers?
Interesting read, but I don't think that its entirely true. We (baby boomer generation) may not see a future classic in any of the current offerings, but in 20-40 years, WE won't be the cruisers. The kids of today will be harkening (can anyone give me the word I want?) back to their "Good-Old-Days" . Re: [Chevelle-list] the list
For sure, things will change. Question is how much?I think everyone is aware of Lists & Forums that are NOT like the chevelle lists. But I honestly believe that the people at Chevelle Tech & on the list willl keep things at an even keel. The guy who will manage (run?) the web sites has posted at both Camaros.Ney & Chevelles.Com and he seems reasonable & willing to listen to what works. Finally, Al has too much of his heart & soul & Life invested in his former web sites to turn them over to anyone who would not do right by them. We'll just have to wait & see. Worked for me. Once again: http://tnmcc.com/chevelle.html Plenty of talent on display in miniature. That site has been around for many years (with different web addresses) and it still amazes me. Re: [Chevelle-list] cowl screen
Be careful with the length of the screws you install. Years ago I ordered correct screws and they turned out to be either too long, or I installed them at the wrong angle. Either way, several extended too far and put a dimple into the outer sheetmetal. I didn't notice til I had 3 or 4 significant dimples. Paintless dent repair fixed them but it was aggravating. Re: [Chevelle-list] 454 will not start
Could be either or Autozone or most any other of the National Chains can bench check your module. It will need to come out of the distributor, but the test is reasonably accurate. If you are not getting any spark, it should be easy to detect a bad module. And you can check continuity of the coil with a meter. Again if it is the culprit it should be obvious. That booster is fairly common. Unless you are looking for 'correct" you should be able to get a reasonably priced booster at NAPA or other parts store.and FWIW - its been a few years since I bought mine, but a booster/master cylinder combo was cheaper than the booster alone. Go figure. On Fri, Jun 12, 2009 at 1:01 AM, wrote: > The check valve could be bad I suppose, but unlikelyYou can get > boosters from your favorite Chevelle/El Camino parts store.
