[Chevelle-list] Radiator
The repro radiator started leaking again. I did a bubba repair and seemed to have stopped it for now with JB Weld. I can replace it with a similar aftermarket cheapo for about $160, and I'm sure all the hoses will work. I also found an Aluminum radiator on Amazon for $200 (!) that looks to be closer to stock. Think the aluminum is a good idea or too much risk for that price? Brad

I just helped a friend put a 350 into his Camaro- and the only thing he added was headers, what a mess!!! none of the brackets fit that he had bought, we spent most of the day fabricating new brackets for the alternator which would not adjust with this new bracket and the pulleys would not line up!!! Re: [Chevelle-list] Radiator Replacement
I have a new 4 row core for a 64,65,66 Chevelle that I never used. I had it put on my tanks and started to install and found that I would have to remove the spacer from between the radiator and front mounting cross member. Or what they are called. It would work on a big block good, but for a small block the radiator would be farther from fan and out of the should. It never had water in it and never installed, I went back to 3 row. If any one is interested let me know, let it go cheap if you can use it. Darrell **Biggest Grammy Award surprises of all time on AOL Music. The cost of having it repaired a few years ago might have been more expensive then, but copper prices, all metal for that matter, have gone up at an alarming rate. Good idea to check prices; you might be suprised. -- Original message -- From: Josh Campbell [EMAIL PROTECTED] It depends one what you have in mind with your car, if you have an original radiator that you want to keep and do the numbers thing, then have it repaired. Otherwise I would buy a new radiator, I had one recored a couple years ago and it cost more to have it repaired than what it would have cost to buy a replacement. If you buy a new rad, copper is the way to go, seems like I read somewhere that copper radiators actually cool better than an aluminum replacement. [Chevelle-list] Radiator Replacement
Let me apologize up front for the long post. The last couple of times I went into the garage I saw some coolant under the left front of the car, it wasn't a lot, just enough to wet the floor with a 2 foot diameter spot. It doesn't take much to make it look like a lot plus when I checked the level in the radiator it looked like it was it should be. Checking it out I thought I could see a line coming from under the return nozzle of the radiator where the upper hose attaches. I am still using the old style tower clamps, I thought that may be the culprit and I was going to change out all the old style clamps with new ones. I drove her around a little today and when I stopped I checked it again to see if what I thought was the problem actually was. Well I saw a spot on the tubes about half way top to bottom about an inch from the left tank on the engine side of the radiator. Well here is my question, should I get this one repaired, or buy a new radiator. If a new one is the way to go should it be an aluminum one or an old style replacement. If aluminum is the way to go can it be painted black to resemble an original radiator? Thanks in advance for your replies. John L. Re: [Chevelle-list] Radiator Replacement
A radiator shop can tell you if it is worth fixing. Depends somewhat on how old it is. If it has a hole that has developed without cause by damage, I would replace it. I don't see any reason to change to an aluminum radiator. Yes, But don't just get a tap that's flat on the bottom. Get a tap called a bottoming tap, they have cutting threads all the way to the last thread at the end of the tap. They are used to bring the threads all the way down to the bottom of a blind hole. They are available at a good hardware store or autoparts store.Good luck Trooper - Original Message - From: timothy mcguire [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Chevelle-list@chevelles.net Sent: Sunday, February 12, 2006 11:47 AM Subject: Re: [Chevelle-list] radiator/ trans line hey ron, a flat bottom tap is that a standard tool ? maybe at the local hardware or auto parts? thanks ron, tim From: Ron Zeppin [EMAIL PROTECTED] Reply-To: The Chevelle Mailing List Chevelle-list@chevelles.net To: The Chevelle Mailing List Chevelle-list@chevelles.net Subject: Re: [Chevelle-list] radiator/ trans line Date: Sun, 12 Feb 2006 10:02:52 -0700 Hi Tim...maybe try a flat bottom tap?? H, I just picked up for my 69 a NEW - BIG Block radiator from a guy here locally, Bill's Jr Radiator in Dayton. He sells them for $165 (before tax, shipping etc.) Mine came sealed in a box and we opened it and it looks great. Might be a little different than original so doubt it will work for the authentic crowd, but should cool my engine just fine. I have a manual transmission but will have an air conditioner so I got a 4 row. This guy knows his stuff and we are working with him to give him our old radiators to get dimensions so he can custom make anything he needs to. He's willing to custom make tanks, get 3 rows to cool as well as 4 rows (something about core size) and he even will tig weld on aluminum stuff on aluminum radiators to make them fit. Can't you remove the radiator cap and look inside to see how many rows a radiator has? You should be able to count the tube ends, from front to back, to determine 3 or 4 row. Am I right? RE: [Chevelle-List] RADIATOR
The reason I ask is because I sell restoration parts for these cars. I was getting prices on Modine radiators earlier today. $165 is a very good price, even if it's not a Modine. If there's a company out there distributing radiators to retailers at great prices, I'd like to know who they are. That's why I'm interested in ClimatePro. I was not able to find them on switchboard.com. It would be helpful to know what city state they are in. the Radac label is on top of the Climatepro label. I was able to find Radac w/o a problem. I'd like to find ClimatePro and see what their story is. I just ordered an alum rad from http://www.streetrodstuff.com/Products/157/. They're $298 now plus (mine was) $21 shipping and $50 for A/T cooling. A couple of other folks on Team Chevelle have purchased them and I finally took the plunge - see http://www.chevelles.com/forum/Forum27/HTML/000460.html. I talked to Dave Z, one of the owners I think, and we went through the "custom" configuration on the phone to ensure things were at least ordered right. RE: [Chevelle-List] radiator
You know, I went throught this ordeal earlier this year and here's what I learned: One: Aluminum rads save weight but are not easily repairable. Two: Copper rads can be fabbed up by your local rad shop and they'll do all the work, including in and out, for less than $400. And, when you pick up a stone and it starts leaking, they'll solder it and you're back on the road. The Muscle Factroy in CA. sells Desert Coolers. 4 core, copper , vertical flow radiators. low $200 range. I have on in my 65 Elky. My only complaint is the top tank hose is on the pasenger side not on the drivers side.! and IMO short flows to the lowere hose resulting in inefficient or equal dissipation of heat. [Chevelle-List] Radiator Question
I replaced the radiator mounting pads on my 69SS. Purchased them from Ground up. They don't fit, or at least two of the four don't. My radiator is a 3 core, (wishing for a 4 Core). Two of them are to small. What do I need to order? Ground Up only shows one type and size.Thanks. Craig
RE: [Chevelle-List] Radiator Question
I am showing 2 sizes. One is (allegedly) for 3-row and the other is for 4-row. Naturally the 4-row ones would be bigger, so maybe that's what you need. Is it an aftermarket radiator? If so, that might explain the fit problem. I've been through the same thing (1967 SS396 with a 350 motor). Unfortunately for you, I had it easier, as I was replacing hoses. I was able to go to a parts shop with my old hose and compare a few hundred hoses until I found one I could use. I do remember that I had to shorten the hose. It had the right bends, but was too long. I will look to see if I can read part numbers off of my hoses and get them to you. When you go to a parts book, look at the 327 hoses for 1966 and also look at 350 hoses for a 1969 for potential ideas. So, if you find a correct hose for a '66 w/V8, it's probably not going to fit. If you want to email me privately ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) I happen to have a early-style Summit chrome housing w/ O-ring seal new in the package that might let you use a stock '66 upper hose if you can get one. -Dave -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Friday, January 04, 2002 7:57 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [Chevelle-List] radiator hose help Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List In a message dated 1/3/02 10:22:58 PM Atlantic Standard Time, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: Hey John, you mentioned it's a 350, which wouldn't be stock for a '66 -- does it have an early style thermostat housing?
