Re: [Chevelle-list] Headers
Given that I have a long water pump and all "modern" brackets on my 1958 block, it seems like all of the SBC brackets are interchangeable. I don't know of any significant change from a 1968 350 to a 1970 350 in terms of brackets, but I plan to put one on my '70. That's a little ways down the road though. Right now it doesn’t even have an engine in it. By "get rid of", if you mean "free" then, no. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Wednesday, April 26, 2006 3:32 PM To: The Chevelle Mailing List Subject: Re: [Chevelle-list] Headers John will that bracket fit a 1970. it say's it's for 64 to 68. and also do you have one to get rid of, or are you saying i can buy one from Old car network

Re: [Chevelle-list] Headers
Since I have a BBC, it might not be exactly the same, but I went through something very similar. I bought a set of Sanderson for my 396. I did have a clearance issue with the BBC driver's side alternator bracket. I ended up grinding off the bottom part of the bracket just below the bolt hole so both the header flange and bracket could both be mounted properly. It works well, and it seems strong as ever. The alternative would have been to grind on my coated headers, and I didn't want to do that! I've built a few streetrods in my day,Denny, and here's what most of us in the industry call a blockhugger. (notwithstanding Sanderson's terminology) http://www.sandersonheaders.com/pagesbypartnum/cc1.htm You would think the header makers could get their terminology standardized. Funny thing is,when I called Sanderson to order some of the blockhuggers, the salesman said "Oh,what you want are some of our intermediates". Heck,I give up. What’s the requirement for the collector dump (CC10) at the firewall instead of straight down (CC12)? Automatic vs. 4-speed? Both sets have the same measurements. Re: [Chevelle-list] Headers
I dont have Dougs on my Chevelle, but I have them on my 67 Nova with a SBC, and they fit excellent! Look great, sound great, etc. Couldn't be happier with them. -Tim King-
RE: [Chevelle-list] Headers
I have no actual experience, but a custom fit for '64-'72 should be better as there are differences. I think Doug's is what used to be "Doug Thorley", but I'm not sure. Thorley's headers had a good reputation. [Chevelle-list] Headers
Evening, I am looking for some feedback. Has anyone used Doug's Headers? I have a 66 396 and am still looking for headers. Most header applications cover 64 - 72. Doug's lists a set specifically for 64-67. Common sense would make you think that these would have the best chance of fitting correctly. Comments. thanks Mark

[Chevelle-list] Headers
After calling about 8 header mfg. today...one thing pops out. All are slightly different, andif you want the best Jet Hot coatingIt's better to have Jet Hot apply it. Hooker and Hedman treat their own headers, and sometimes the insides may or may not be sprayed and cured properly. After all the calls to MFG. and installers as well...I decided to buy my Hooker headers from Jet Hot and have them custom apply the ceramic coating and ship to me! Call me a fool, but the quality of application came up time and time again! So.if I'm unsatisfied...I'll be glad to tell you!! Herb, Jere and I spoke on the phone and emailed a number of times. He can't do headers for my combination of Mid Year Corvette, small block, raised ports, angle plugs, and side pipes. Primary tubes would be too short, and his headers only fit the C3. He did say that he would consider "fixing" a set of Hedman's to work with my heads. RE: [Chevelle-list] Headers
I went a different route for my headers with the recommendation from my cousin who had used them on 383 647hp with great results. Sanderson Headers. I had clearance problems with the header that were on the car when I bought it. They were too close to the steering column and the frame causing rubbing and contact during driving not to mention a nightmare to remove and install them. With the Sanderson I definitely noticed a performance difference the first time I drove the car, and I now have easy access to the plugs and all kinds of room between the steering column and the frame. One thing they provide is very easy removal and installation. I bought them coated and they look great. They are very expensive though maybe two to three time that of Hooker. Houston Texas Yellow Pages. COATING & HOT DIPPING Listings You may be able to find something here. I did a Google search for ceramic coatings Houston Texas. Larry (Z)
RE: [Chevelle-list] Headers
I called Jet Hot about sand blasting and coating. The price was half the cost of a new set of ceramics from Hooker. If I could find someone that would coat my old ones in the Houston area..I might try it! Houston is awful large and with all the refineries we have you would surely think someone ceramic coats in the area! What year are you running your dimpled headers on? I have coated Hookers on my '69 396 with no dimples. The driver's side was no box of chocolates to install, I can tell you that. The only clearance issue I had was that the brake lines needed to be moved a 1/4" or so on the drivers side. The claim that they are coated inside and out is a myth, I have been told by some race car builders and a person who does the coatings for a living.

RE: [Chevelle-list] Headers
I called Holley Hooker today…I was surprised when the rep told me the ceramic headers can still show rust. He said the ceramic coating is very porous. I know the coating helps heat dissipation, but I also thought it helped the headers resist rust. I have a set of Super Comps, but they are the old style with plenty of rust!. I know there is SS, but they discolor so bad over time! Oh well! Has anyone used the alternator, Power steering and AC brackets? Good luck finding someone to make custom headers. I can't find anyone within 150 miles that makes custom headers anymore. If you live in a lower rent area, maybe you can find them, but in metro areas the shop can make more money doing catalytic converters and standard installs all day than taking a few days to make something custom. I had my 4 or 5 year old headers ceramic coated in 1997. I have not yet noticed any rust or other corrrosion. You might have to buy non-coated headers & have them done by a shop that specializes in the coating. Mark, I have a 66 with a 4spd and a 454. I have Hooker Super Comp headers, and no dings, and they fit really well. The are pretty close to the steering column, but they dont hit it at all. -Tim
RE: [Chevelle-list] Headers suggestions
I have 2” Hooker Super Comps on my 71 with no dinging. I hate dings. My motor isn’t stock though and I race it. Since you have a stock engine I would suggest you buy the 1 7/8” tube Super Comps. The smaller tube headers provide more bottom end performance and that is what you need most in a stock or slightly modified street engine. I've run Hooker Comps in the past but won't do so,again. Too many little things I don't like about them. Just my opinion, though. You might check out Hedman or Sanderson for some smaller tube headers for that 396". Re: [Chevelle-list] Headers suggestions
I have not had a set of headers that I did not HAVE to ding. I have a '65 with a 502 in it, and 2" primaries and had to persuade (with a hammer, and piece of wood) them in. Buy the uncoated, beat em up a bit then have them coated. You do not lose performance by dinging them up. It generally makes the tubes flatter, but does not actually decrease the inside diameter. If you were to drastically bend them, or kink them, only then would you increase the inside diameter of the pipe. So, basically, no matter what you buy, you will probably end up hammering them a bit. On a side note, I also put in 3" exhaust from pypesperformance.com and it is absolutely awesome. I bought the Pypes mufflers, and the X crossover with cutouts. Has a real good throaty sound through the mufflers, but fairly quiet. Not obnoxious like a big block through Flowmasters. I wanted that 'sleeper' sound with good performance, and managed the both.. RE: [Chevelle-list] Headers
Hi Eric, I have a set of AFR 305's waiting to go on my Elky. It took me a while but I did find one company that is willing to cater to the raised exhaust port. Stahl Headers. However, when I ordered a set their design did not clear three of my spark plugs so I returned them for a refund. I've since found out that Stahl is designing a new header for the early Chevelles and have gotten an AFR head for their jig. You might contact them to see if their current design will work with the particular heads you have. Ask for Judy and tell her I sent you. http://www.stahlheaders.com/index_old.html Herb Lumpphttp://users.adelphia.net/~hlump/index.htm -Original Message-From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]On Behalf Of [EMAIL PROTECTED]Sent: Saturday, November 20, 2004 2:56 PMTo: [EMAIL PROTECTED]Subject: [Chevelle-list] Headers Does anyone on the list have a bbc with raised exhaust port heads? Re: [Chevelle-list] Headers *update*
Ok this is an update for whoever was asking about headers on Brodix raised exhaust port heads. Well supposedly if you believe the Chevelle tech board the Hooker Super Comp headers fit with no modifications, but then I have been reading there about motor mounts for over an hour and have heard every possible scenario as truth on these damn frame mounts. Sbc and bbc are different... only 307 frame mounts are different... neither are different and both put the motor in the same place... bbc uppers and small block lowers will raise the motor an inch... blah blah blah... bah humbug! :P Here is my scenario... so take what you will from this... I bought this car (a 68 300 deluxe [do all 300 deluxes come with a 350? or are they available with a 307?]) and had a 350 small block in it when purchased. I now have a 496 BBC with Brodix raised exhaust port heads on it (they have been milled slightly) dropped in and a set of #2250 Hooker Super comp headers. I left the frame mounts that were in the car in there and used a set of moroso BBC upper mounts. Well with this scenario my driver side header collector hits the floor pan pretty bad. No way to ding fit this. Now I may try a 307 or a 350 upper mount and see if this takes the motor down enough to fit the headers. My only concern is that if I do that I think the oil pan is gonna hit. So I dunno... Motor is pulled for the winter while I try and figure out what is up and try and find some 307 or 350 uppers or maybe some plain jane motor mounts ane see what the difference is. Here is a link with pics that are supposedly the difference between the small block lower and uppers... http://www.chevelles.com/cgi-bin/forum/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=9;t=011336 ,but at this point I think no one really knows. I may end up making my own or I may end up ditching these heads to go with some bigger cc heads and change pistons to go 8.5 to 1 and go with forced induction like I really want to do anyways. Have all winter to figure it out. RE: [Chevelle-list] Headers
Man that a serious head for a 396! Wow! Well I have the same heads on my car and when I had it in my G body the hooker super comps fit with no problems. However the G body headers don't come anywhere near fitting in the chevelle. I'm gonna try a standard set and see how they look shortly. I have a set of Brodix BB2-Plus heads on my 396. The engine is in a 67 Malibu, are there any companys that make Headers for heads with raised exhaust ports?

RE: [Chevelle-list] headers and heat shields
If it is the same as the small block, (which shouldn’t be too different), You just have to drop the starter, bolt it on, and put the starter back in. Not much harder than just replacong the starter. RE: [Chevelle-list] headers and heat shields
John; I'd bet Mega torque could get you one. Thanks, I appreciate your thoughts. I just try to help. I'm new here, but I have loved Chevelles for as long as I can remember. And yeah, the people here are great. I think this chevelle-list is allot of fun. I admit I don't know it all, and big blocks aren't my norm. I like to hear the mouse motors roar, guess I'm a sucker for the underdog. After reading all today's posts I went out and stamped my vin # on my frame. Can't be too safe nowadays. I'm going to look into etching the # on the glass too. I figure why not, it can't hurt, and car thieves need to be deturred(misspelled?) anyway good luck with that big block. I think header distance from the starter might have some bearing too. Its your first musclecar? Oh I envy you. Its a special feeling owning one. or should I say being owned by one guys? I feel like the fifth wheel here, but being an ornery redhead with two big brothers I feel right at home. Well, back to the garagePep. Chevelles, they're not just boy toys ;-)
Re: [Chevelle-list] headers and heat shields
By the way, is it hard getting the shields on in a BB chevelle with headers?
Re: [Chevelle-list] headers and heat shields
Diane, Thanks for the info. and I do believe you because I really don't know this being my first muscle car. It really does'nt matter who I get the answers for my problems from as long as they make sense and I admit that you seem to know a lot more about these things than I along with all the great fellas on this list . Thanks again John H. 66 SS

Blazer-man Well, speaking from years of owning chevys I can tell you heat shields are a good investment. I had the same problem with several cars and it went away instantly after adding the shield. Don't believe me? call "Mega torque" Starter and alternators in Kansas City 816-231-7032 . Heat shields do just that. they shield from heat. hence the name ;-D, take it from the pros. Just trying to pass on knowledge :-Diane
Re: [Chevelle-list] headers and heat shields
Also, on my Chevelle, I have a remote starter soleniod, and its up on the firewall, so it doesnt get nearly as much heat as the starteranother option for those of you having a big problem with hot starters.
