Thanks Dale. I think mine is a wide ratio Muncie as well. Although I
haven't checked the numbers on it yet, from the input shaft it looks like
an M-20. My car is still an auto with the TH400, but I'm doing the
conversion to a 4spd. Haven't really gotten that started yet..still
collecting parts, but it sounds like I might be able to stick with the rear
gear I have. I think it's somewhere in the 2.79-3.07 neighborhood.

My Malibu was a grocery-getter from the factory. I think it started life
as a 350 2 barrel?, TH350 auto and was gold exterior with a black vinyl
top. Now it's a 396/TH400, soon to be 4spd, primer gray and I tore off the
vinyl roof to repair some rust.

As many of you have said, this car is taking much more time and money then
first planned, but Oh Well! I love the beast!

Matt,

The 396 has gobs of low end torque and for normal, everyday driving I
haven't found the higher gear to be detrimental at all. I ran a 2.79 gear
for about 11 years and only went to the "lower" 3.07's because I wanted a 67
rear end again (previous was a wider 68> rear) and that's what I happen to
find first. I have a wide ratio Muncie (2.52 1st gear) which helps a bit as
well.

I'm looking at going to a 700R4 for a couple of reasons. (1) I'm getting
lazy and would like to be able to drink a cup of coffee on the way to work
:*). (2) Since 9/11 it takes anywhere from 20-40 minutes to get on the army
base I work at due to security checks and the constant stop-start in a two
block long line is getting old fast. (3) I run about 3000 rpm at 75 now and
with the overdrive I can knock that down to around 2000/2100 range for
better mileage and less wear and tear on the engine. I generally make three
or four fairly long trips a year to car shows from 150 miles to 800+ miles
each way and I could use the mileage.

yes it is but 4l80e has all kinds of weird electronics you have to buy a special harness to convert it and also the convertor has some sort of lockup wiring (not sure what). Big money part of doing the 4l80e was having transmission guy rebuilt it. Also the core alone was 800-1000. Also tail shaft has to be changed so Speedo will hook up as 4l80e has electronic Speedo.

Guess that got me informed,Larry. But to
be fair, either set-up would require rewiring(the Gear Vendors is

If you have that kind of money to throw around, why
not just install a built 4L80? All it is is a HD TH400 w/OD. Cheaper, strong, and
less hassle. If it was my car,I wouldn't even go that far. If the car already
had a TH400 installed,just install a set of 3.55's or something close. Add a
decent torque converter and you're ready to go. For a pure street car,the
difference between a 4.10 cog and a 3.55 is negligible,anyway. A big block can
easily pull a tall gear and 28" tall tire.
Ring gear spacers? In this day and age,I would not
even consider using one. No offense,Larry.

me his 4:10 have a 4 series carriers it was common practice to use a 3 series
carrier with a ring spacer when going to 4 series gears. his does not have
that so he will have to change. my suggestion offline (tom and i are really
good buddies in spite the fact we live on opposite coasts) to tom was to keep
the th400, fix the gears (the reason he is changing them is they are howling)
and put a gear vendor over drive in. the gears are shot any old way you look
at i so figure them a wash. i say to change over to 700r4 probably total is
$1000.00 - 1250.00. to do the gear vendor you are looking at $2500.00. bottom
line is you get for $1250.00 -1500.00 more a stronger transmission with a
separate overdrive with  six split speeds forward.the gear vendor is
rated for 1200 HP. simply unbolt rear housing of th400 , bolt over drive on,
shorten drive shaft and do a little wiring.you end up with a final drive of
  .75:1

No,it's not normal for them to whine. If they do,then they were set-up
poorly. The 4.10 Richmonds in my 68 Elky were as quiet as stock. My ZR-1 has
4.10 Dana Super 44's in it and they are totally silent, too. Ring & pinion
set-up is becoming a lost art but that's no excuse to accept sub-standard
work.
The only rear end I owned that was supposed to make noise, was the Halibrand
quick change in my 40 Ford coupe streetrod.

I have a 2.73 rear behind my small block and 700R4, and I can tell I
need more. I do get about 24 mpg cruising on the highway, but I have
been planning to upgrade to a mid-3 series gear as well. 3.31 is a 20%
increase for me and was likely what I was thinking of as this get very
close to the "optimal" factor I have seen where they say divide 10 by
first gear ratio and you have a good rear ratio (10/3.06=3.27). But
with the large step between first (3.06) and second (1.63) on the 700R4,
it might be better to go to the high end of the scale:

3.06*2.73= 8.35
3.06*3.31=10.13
3.06*3.55=10.86
3.06*3.73=11.41
3.06*4.11=12.58

Also, I assume I need a new carrier. I thought that the 12 bolt mid
range carrier took 3.07 to 3.90 gears, but I have also seen it listed as
3.73 and below, and 3.73 and up, so there seems to be confusion out
there...

offline (tom and i are really good buddies in spite the fact we live on
opposite coasts) to tom was to keep the th400, fix the gears (the reason
he is changing them is they are howling) and put a gear vendor over drive
in. the gears are shot any old way you look at i so figure them a wash. i
say to change over to 700r4 probably total is $1000.00 - 1250.00. to do
the gear vendor you are looking at $2500.00. bottom line is you get for
$1250.00 -1500.00 more a stronger transmission with a separate overdrive
with  six split speeds forward.the gear vendor is rated for 1200 HP.
simply unbolt rear housing of th400 , bolt over drive on, shorten drive
shaft and do a little wiring.you end up with a final drive of .75:1

I sure like that idea vs the four speed auto. BTW the 700R4's are well
over $1500 if bought new.

Hey Tom, my question with the used gears would be more if they're set up
properly. I really see no problem with used gears. I put them in my 12 bolt
and have had no problems. (Although the car has not seen a lot of road
time!)

OK here's the old hot rodder's take on rear axle ratios and trannys. Keep
the TH-400 and get a 3.73 gear set. Why not do the four speed?. You could
get your 400 rebuilt and shift kitted twice before you could pay for the
700granted the 700 is a very good tranny, but it may be more expensive
in the long run if you race it much. I think it's best to be at or less
than 3K when cruising the highways. The 3.42 10 bolt is what all the G-body
guys strive for, but If I could change my 3.08 tomorrow, I'd go 3.73. I
drive the freeways about 40 miles a day and cruising at 80 runs 3k on the
tach. Mileage? Who cares, I didn't buy my car to get good mileage, that's
what "TowRopers" are for:)

Every 4-series gear I ever heard had a pretty good whine. I think that's
pretty normal. Especially the 4.30:1 F**d I once had under a '70 M*g
(when I was still over on the dark side).

Hi,

For 12 bolt C axle
I know that Richmond makes two different sets of 3,73's one for the 3 series
carrier and one for the 4 series carrier.
They also make 4,88 4,56 4,10 3,90 to fit the 3 series carrier

I don't think that you can go lower than 3,73 with the 4 series carrier.
I installed this gears last summer behind a small block and a Muncie, it's
a little bit short on the top end but it should be ok behind your possible
0,70 ratio on 4th gear which would make it a 2,61

I agre with clint. Behind the torque of a big block 3.31 or 3.55 will
work nicely, especially with an OD.I have a s/b with 700r4 and 3.31,
my seat of the pants feeling is for my combo 3.55 would be better.
Question though, if you drop lower than the 3.73, will you need a new
carrier?

self this past year i put back the original gear set that was in there when
built which was 3.36.1 ratio was 373 ratio it has a m21, and going down the
highway with 373 was tuff i would be winding the motor out more then i liked
to to get to a cruisin speed thats why i went with the original i would
have liked the 342 ratio but i couldnt get it cause i have a 10bolt rear

Hey Tom
I will have to agree with everyone that either a 3.31 or 3.55 gear would
be great. Right now you could do the gears and then do the trans down the
road. Valid point was brought up, what series carrier do you have now? If
you are going to get the 3.31's you better start looking now as noone
makes them new, you gotta reuse a GM set.

On the note of the 700. Mom's car has 3.55's and just loves to cruise with
the torque of the big block. Although we were all set to put a 3.31 in it
when we found out the housing was an early one. So were just gonna save it
for the 65 and stick with the gears she has now.

We can talk about this more at the next meeting if ya want...

Yes,you will need a new carrier,Rick. That's probably the main reason I
never switched to 3.55's.

Since we're on the subject, what do you guys suggest for a 396/4 speed
combo? I was thinking 3.31 or 3.55. I would like to be able to drive on
the highway for long distances occasionally.

With that motor a 3.31 & 700R4 will boil the tires off & be great
on the highway.
