In a message dated 1/14/2003 7:44:52 PM Eastern Standard Time, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: I would not want to use acid dip because you have to remove trim tag. If you have a numbers correct car the replacement rivets calls into question the originality and makes it look like you switched tags. This is not meant to sound smart ass but probably will, but what are you supposed to do about rust under the body tag, leave it there? It will eventually work its way out into a fresh painted area. I took both the VIN and the body tag off my 70 when I was restoring it. I put the VIN back on before it went out to get painted. Besides, the last 6 digits of the VIN are stamped in 2 different locations on the body as well as the frame. It just seems to me that being quite anal. I just used regular pop rivets to put the body tag back on. My car is not original anyways, and besides the point, it's my car so I'll do the best job I can to prevent the rust demons from coming back. I can understand not taking it off if it is some kind of super car, such as a Yenko, L89, LS6, L79, etc, but for a modified car or other than an Original Restored car, I wouldn't worry about it. Just my opinion. Tom

$2100, that was the body and 2 doors. But for that price they also e-coated the body and doors. So every square inch of steel is primered with e-coat. The frame will cost me $300 to sand blast. Rust, grease, paint, sealer, etc. But you get back virgin looking steel. They bake it in an oven to melt and loosen everything then dip it and then it is run through a neutralizing bath. Just had mine done and I couldn't be happier with it. The solid floors I thought I had.. well their not so solid. I have to replace two small sections in front. Right where the air conditioner was. I had a Mustang media blasted once and it turned out to be a nightmare. It will punch holes in weaker metal even if there are no holes there now. Re: [Chevelle-List] blasting a body
The fastest, safest and best way to strip a car is acid dip. It will cost about the same as media blasting. Maybe a little more. They don't use sand. Sandblasting is one of those universal words everyone uses to describe what they want done. They do sandblast the frame, I'll get mine done this spring. Acid dipping will get in every nook and cranny and remove EVERYTHING. Rust, grease, paint, sealer, etc. But you get back virgin looking steel. Re: [Chevelle-List] blasting a body
Hey All, Haven't finished all of it yet, but used Aircraft stripper on my 67. Did Front Cap, rear deck lid, and both doors in about 3 hrs with pressure washer. Get the kind in the 1 gallon can, seems to be stronger than what is in the aerosol can. You'll probably still have to go over it twice, First coat will get the paint and the next one will get the primer. But like someone said earlier don't be a dumbass like me and not use gloves, that stuff does burn. LOL David
RE: [Chevelle-List] blasting a body
I did that with a '69 LeMans I had...what a mess - and yeah, it does burn! Plan on using stripper in my engine compartment. Just waiting for a day I can keep the doors open. Most of the "skin" on an airplane is aluminum, and very thin aluminum at that. THERE are also places that will chemically dip the car/panels, this takes off the paint & all the rust with no warpage, some places will even dip/coat it after it is done. this is more expensive, but very nice- i think someone on the list just had a body dipped and e-coated??? - To Unsubscribe please visit www.chevelles.net/list.html To start a new topic, send mail to: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Actually you should NEVER use silica sand to sandblast. It is stated plainly on every bag of silica sand. I work in the largest glass plant in the world and the prime ingredient in making glass is silica sand. The effects take a long time to show up and are worse than emphysema. Breathing that dust is bad news, folks. Wear the proper safety gear when sandblasting. Re: [Chevelle-List] blasting a body
I brought all my lose parts that I can carry like hood, fenders, trunk lid, rad support, inner fenders, to a shop. He has a huge room where he blasts somthing that looks like baking soda. He said it's a his own special mix. He wears a full spaceman suit when he is in there blasting. The cost was $500.00 and well worth it in my opinion. The parts came back 100 per cent bare metal and no damage. I was going to bring the body shell to him but with new quarters on and car has vinyl roof so was not that much to blast compared to a lot of work to bring the body to him. I should have planned better and gave him the whole body. I did some of my own blasting with sand but will not do that again. They say the sand silica is very bad for your lungs. - Original Message - From: "Dave Benjamin" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Monday, January 13, 2003 2:00 PM Subject: Re: [Chevelle-List] blasting a body > I also use the Aircraft paint stripper. You could always use the stripper "Aircraft Remover" It's nasty stuff though so you have to use gloves and peel the bubbles up paint off with a putty knife and neutralize it with water after. (You do have to use gloves when applying and when scraping and make sure to wash it all off otherwise nothing will stick to the body afterwards)Man that stuff burns. The problem with using sand is it can warp and work-harden body panels which ruins them. Sandblasting a car takes an expert that really knows his stuff and those people with the expertise are uncommon. I just wouldn't do it. Re: [Chevelle-List] blasting a body
I'm assuming with the talk of sand being to abrasive that you can get sand in a corse and fine grade, but even the fine is too corse to the novice sandblaster. Is this correct? Sandblasting can and will deform the body panels leaving you with a wavy panel. What is the suggested method and approx. what does it cost. On a side note, i will not be blasting the fenders, doors or trunk lid because i'll be buying new ones. Re: [Chevelle-List] blasting a body
Unless you are an expert at doing that,I would highly recommend some other method. Sandblasting has ruined more sheetmetal than most of us will ever know. I would think there would be someone in your area that offers plastic media blasting, baking soda blasting,or even a Redi-Strip franchise nearby. The only things I would sandblast would be the undercarriage or chassis.
