    blasting a body

I just finished building one.  It was a piece of cake.
The steel was $178 all cut and ready to go.  The worst part is
drilling all the holes.  If you want pictures let me know.  I
did make a little adjustment, added 2 hyd cyl to raise and lower it on
the uprights.

The fastest, safest and best way to
strip a car is acid dip. It will cost about the same as media
blasting. Maybe a little more. They don't use sand. Sandblasting
is one of those universal words everyone uses to describe what
they want done. They do sandblast the frame, I'll get mine done
this spring. Acid dipping will get in every nook and cranny and
remove EVERYTHING. Rust, grease, paint, sealer, etc. But you get
back virgin looking steel. They bake it in an oven to melt and
loosen everything then dip it and then it is run through a
neutralizing bath. Just had mine done and  I couldn't be
happier with it. The solid floors I thought I had.. well
their not so solid. I have to replace two small sections in
front. Right where the air conditioner was. I had a Mustang
media blasted once and it turned out to be a nightmare. It will
punch holes in weaker metal even if there are no holes there
now.

I would not want to use acid dip because you
have to remove trim tag. If you have a numbers correct car the replacement
rivets calls into question the originality and makes it look like you switched
  tags.

The fastest, safest and best way to strip a
car is acid dip. It will cost about the same as media blasting. Maybe a
little more. They don't use sand. Sandblasting is one of those universal
words everyone uses to describe what they want done. They do sandblast the
frame, I'll get mine done this spring. Acid dipping will get in every nook
and cranny and remove EVERYTHING. Rust, grease, paint, sealer, etc. But
you get back virgin looking steel. They bake it in an oven to melt and
loosen everything then dip it and then it is run through a neutralizing
bath. Just had mine done and  I couldn't be happier with it. The
solid floors I thought I had.. well their not so solid. I have to
replace two small sections in front. Right where the air conditioner was.

This is not meant to sound smart ass but probably will, but what are you supposed to do about rust under the body tag, leave it there?  It will eventually work its way out into a fresh painted area.  I took both the VIN and the body tag off my 70 when I was restoring it.  I put the VIN back on before it went out to get painted.  Besides, the last 6 digits of the VIN are stamped in 2 different locations on the body as well as the frame.  It just seems to me that being quite anal.  I just used regular pop rivets to put the body tag back on.  My car is not original anyways, and besides the point, it's my car so I'll do the best job I can to prevent the rust demons from coming back.
I can understand not taking it off if it is some kind of super car, such as a Yenko, L89, LS6, L79, etc, but for a modified car or other than an Original Restored car, I wouldn't worry about it.  Just  my opinion.

$2100, that was the body and 2 doors. But for that
price they also e-coated the body and doors. So every square inch of steel is
primered with e-coat. The frame will cost me $300 to sand blast.

Hey All,

Haven't finished all of it yet, but used Aircraft stripper on my 67. Did Front Cap,
rear deck lid, and both doors in about 3 hrs with pressure washer. Get the kind
in the 1 gallon can, seems to be stronger than what is in the aerosol can. You'll probably still have to go over it twice, First coat will get the paint and the next one will get the primer. But like someone said earlier don't be a dumbass like me and not use gloves, that stuff does burn. LOL

You could always use the stripper "Aircraft Remover" It's nasty stuff though
so you have to use gloves and peel the bubbles up paint off with a putty
knife and neutralize it with water after. (You do have to use gloves when
applying and when scraping and make sure to wash it all off otherwise
nothing will stick to the body afterwards)Man that stuff burns. Used it on a
'71 Monte years ago and it works great.

The problem with using sand is it can warp and work-harden body panels which
ruins them. Sandblasting a car takes an expert that really knows his stuff
and those people with the expertise are uncommon. I just wouldn't do it.
Even if it costs a little more, the other methods will ensure a good job.
This is not a good place to be scrimping on money.

Sandblasting is kinda hard on aluminum. Most airplanes(but not all) are made

Most of the "skin" on an airplane is aluminum, and very thin aluminum at

You could always use the stripper "Aircraft Remover" It's nasty stuff though
so you have to use gloves and peel the bubbles up paint off with a putty
knife and neutralize it with water after. (You do have to use gloves when
applying and when scraping and make sure to wash it all off otherwise
nothing will stick to the body afterwards)Man that stuff burns. Used it on a

The problem with using sand is it can warp and work-harden body panels which
ruins them. Sandblasting a car takes an expert that really knows his stuff
and those people with the expertise are uncommon. I just wouldn't do it.
Even if it costs a little more, the other methods will ensure a good job.

THERE are also places that will chemically dip the car/panels, this takes off the

done. this is more expensive, but very nice- i think someone on the list just had a

Actually you should NEVER use silica sand to sandblast. It is stated
plainly on every bag of silica sand. Although this doesn't stop many
guys that don't want to pay for more expensive media and think they're
invincible. There are many other types of media that are much more
effective and much safer (this by no means negates the need for
respiratory protection) I personally like slag (Black Beauty) but like
the others say this is too harsh for body work.

2003-01-13 Thread Clint Hooper
I work in the largest glass plant in the world and the prime ingredient in
making glass is silica sand. Twenty five years ago when I worked in the rail
dock unloading sand cars,we weren't aware of the dangers of silicosis and
often didn't wear respirators. The effects take a long time to show up and
are worse than emphysema.
Breathing that dust is bad news, folks. Wear the proper safety gear when
sandblasting.

2003-01-13 Thread yenkochevelle
I brought all my lose parts that I can carry like hood, fenders, trunk lid,
rad support, inner fenders, to a shop.
He has a huge room where he blasts somthing that looks like baking soda. He
said it's a his own special mix. He wears a full spaceman suit when he is in
there blasting. The cost was $500.00 and well worth it in my opinion. The
parts came back 100 per cent bare metal and no damage. I was going to bring
the body shell to him but with new quarters on and car has vinyl roof so was
not that much to blast compared to a lot of work to bring the body to him. I
should have planned better and gave him the whole body. I did some of my own
blasting with sand but will not do that again. They say the sand silica is
very bad for your lungs.

Yep, but if you lean your zipper part of your pants on the car while the
Aircraft stripper is on the body, your Wife or girlfriend will sure laugh
while you hop around the shop trying to find the water real quick!
Don't ask me how I know ;)

You could always use the stripper "Aircraft Remover" It's nasty stuff though
so you have to use gloves and peel the bubbles up paint off with a putty
knife and neutralize it with water after. (You do have to use gloves when
applying and when scraping and make sure to wash it all off otherwise
nothing will stick to the body afterwards)Man that stuff burns. Used it on a

Sandblasting can and will deform the body panels leaving you with a wavy

Unless you are an expert at doing that,I would
highly recommend some other method. Sandblasting has ruined more sheetmetal than
most of us will ever know. I would think there would be someone in your area
that offers plastic media blasting, baking soda blasting,or even a Redi-Strip
franchise nearby. The only things I would sandblast would be the undercarriage
or chassis.
