I have a radiator problem that I hope someone has an answer for. I am
restoring a 65 L79 with a manual transmission and no a/c. I got this car
 in
pieces so I do not have the original radiator or fan shroud. I ordered a
radiator #604644-1 and a fan shroud #605623 from Ecklers. The radiator I
received is perfect except there is no flange on the engine side of it to
bolt the fan shroud to. I can't find any pictures of a non A/C L79 so I
don't know exactly how it correctly mounts. I called Ecklers and they
confirmed that I have the correct radiator for this car and I can easily
fabricate some brackets but I want to put this car together as correct as
 possible. Any suggestions?

I have a new 4 row core for a 64,65,66 Chevelle that I never used. I had it
put on my tanks and started to install and found that I would have to remove
the spacer from between the radiator and front mounting cross member. Or
what they are called. It would work on a big block good, but for a small block
the radiator would be farther from fan and out of the should. It never had
water in it and never installed, I went back to 3 row. If any one is
interested
let me know, let it go cheap if you can use it.

It depends one what you have in mind with your car, if you have an original
radiator that you want to keep and do the numbers thing, then have it repaired.
Otherwise I would buy a new radiator, I had one recored a couple years ago and
it cost more to have it repaired than what it would have cost to buy a
replacement. If you buy a new rad, copper is the way to go, seems like I read
somewhere that copper radiators actually cool better than an aluminum

A radiator shop can tell you if it is worth fixing. Depends somewhat on how old
it is. If it has a hole that has developed without cause by damage, I would
replace it. I don't see any reason to change to an aluminum radiator.

Subject: [Chevelle-list] Radiator Replacement

Let me apologize up front for the long post. The last couple of times I went
into the garage I saw some coolant under the left front of the car, it wasn't a
lot, just enough to wet the floor with a 2 foot diameter spot. It doesn't take
much to make it look like a lot plus when I checked the level in the radiator
it looked like it was it should be. Checking it out I thought I could see a
line coming from under the return nozzle of the radiator where the upper hose
attaches. I am still using the old style tower clamps, I thought that may be
the culprit and I was going to change out all the old style clamps with new
ones. I drove her around a little today and when I stopped I checked it again
to see if what I thought was the problem actually was. Well I saw a spot on the
tubes about half way top to bottom about an inch from the left tank on the
engine side of the radiator. Well here is my question, should I get this one
repaired, or buy a new radiator. If a new one is the way to go should it be an
aluminum one or an old style replacement. If aluminum is the way to go can it
be painted black to resemble an original radiator?

Thanks in advance for your replies.

Yes,
But don't just get a tap that's flat on the bottom. Get a tap called a
bottoming tap, they have cutting threads all the way to the last thread at
the end of the tap. They are used to bring the threads all the way down to
the bottom of a blind hole. They are available at a good hardware store or

Where did you get your information?

As far as I know I am the only one that took the radiator cap off and
looked down into the radiator. Did anyone come into my house while I was
gone and look at my radiator?

Bill did mention that he can get a 3 core radiator to cool as well as a
4 core if he does the centers as mentioned below. BUT..that is NOT what
 I ordered...nor is it what I received!

I am not sure if I can get a digital picture to come out right to show
the full 4 rows inside or I'd take the pictures. I had to lean my head
into different angles to count all 4 rows, but they are there.

Now, this is NOT a radiator you'd want to put in your car to show for
originality. It's NOT original. But it should do the job. Bill mentioned
this radiator is also used for trucks and it has a heater house outlet
on it where the original did not. Doesn't bother me. I am going for
modified anyway. I just need a radiator that fits, does the job, and
that I can count on to be reliable.

Anyone want to challenge me to try to get the pictures to show it? Or
 will you take my word?

even if it's not a Modine. If there's a company out there distributing

That's why I'm interested in ClimatePro. I was not able to find them on

Thanks Tom. I can sell Modines at those prices and they have a lifetime

Not to say that recores are necessarily bad either. As long as he gives a

2003-01-15 Thread Chevelle 69
H,
I just picked up for my 69 a NEW - BIG Block radiator from a guy here
locally, Bill's Jr Radiator in Dayton. He sells them for $165 (before
tax, shipping etc.) Mine came sealed in a box and we opened it and it
looks great. Might be a little different than original so doubt it will
work for the authentic crowd, but should cool my engine just fine. I
have a manual transmission but will have an air conditioner so I got a 4
row.

This guy knows his stuff and we are working with him to give him our old
radiators to get dimensions so he can custom make anything he needs to.
He's willing to custom make tanks, get 3 rows to cool as well as 4 rows
(something about core size) and he even will tig weld on aluminum stuff
on aluminum radiators to make them fit. Anything custom, new, or need
repairs, give this guy a call. Small mom and pop shop so you get
personal service. He's willing to do business with anyone in the U.S.
and ship it as needed.

RE: [Chevelle-List] RADIATOR

2003-01-15 Thread John Nasta
The reason I ask is because I sell restoration parts for these cars. I was
getting prices on Modine radiators earlier today. $165 is a very good price,
even if it's not a Modine. If there's a company out there distributing
radiators to retailers at great prices, I'd like to know who they are.
That's why I'm interested in ClimatePro. I was not able to find them on
switchboard.com. It would be helpful to know what city state they are in.
the Radac label is on top of the Climatepro label. I was able to find Radac
w/o a problem. I'd like to find ClimatePro and see what their story is.

Thanks,

They're $298 now plus (mine was) $21 shipping and $50 for A/T cooling. A couple
of other folks on Team Chevelle have purchased them and I finally took the
plunge - see http://www.chevelles.com/forum/Forum27/HTML/000460.html.
I talked to Dave Z, one of the owners I think, and we went through the "custom"

right.

You know, I went
throught this ordeal earlier this year and here's what I
learned:

One: Aluminum
rads save weight but are not easily repairable.
Two: Copper rads can be fabbed up by
your local rad shop and they'll do all the work, including in and out, for less
than $400. And, when you pick up a stone and it starts leaking, they'll solder
it and you're back on the road.

I am
showing 2 sizes. One is (allegedly) for 3-row and the other is for 4-row.
Naturally the 4-row ones would be bigger, so maybe that's what you need. Is it

I've been through the same thing (1967 SS396 with a 350 motor).
Unfortunately for you, I had it easier, as I was replacing hoses. I was
able to go to a parts shop with my old hose and compare a few hundred
hoses until I found one I could use. I do remember that I had to
shorten the hose. It had the right bends, but was too long. I will
look to see if I can read part numbers off of my hoses and get them to
you.

When you go to a parts book, look at the 327 hoses for 1966 and also
look at 350 hoses for a 1969 for potential ideas.

John,

it sounds like you have the later-model thermostat housing. So, if you find
a correct hose for a '66 w/V8, it's probably not going to fit. If you want
to email me privately ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) I happen to have a early-style
Summit chrome housing w/ O-ring seal new in the package that might let you
use a stock '66 upper hose if you can get one.

 Hey John, you mentioned it's a 350, which wouldn't be stock for a '66 --
does it have an early style thermostat housing? I believe the early ones
(pre-68?) point almost directly forward off the engine, while the later
housing were angled off towards the driver's side. At least this might
help
with the upper hose. I don't know what to tell you about the lower one.

the neck is angled to the drivers side of the car , this would be helpful to
me if you could tell me which one that would be. as for the bottom it angles
slightly to the left below the water pump. but one is better than none

thanksjohn

Re: [Chevelle-List] radiator strip paint ?

2001-11-10 Thread ALBBIEs1
John,

Thanks, I had ordered the radiator paint from Eastwoods. Also, thanks to the others that gave input. Wes thank you on the carb cleaner tip to clean off old radiator paint. Bought a can and it is SUPER in stripping the paint of the radiator tanks and support frame. Just awaiting the arrival of my Eastwood order with my radiator paint and other items.

Thanks all,
Dwaine

Yes,
do not use the standard Hardware black paint...it will go on to thick and actual
hurt the flow.

[Chevelle-List] radiator strip paint ?Chevelle folks, I recently
purchased a BB radiator and have a strip repaint question(s). 1)
Anyone strip the old paint from the upper, lower tanks and finger guard? If
so, what has worked well for others? I was planning to use a small wire
wheel with a power drill. Any other suggestions? 2) Paint? I saw
a radiator black can spray with Eastwood. Supposed to go on thin with good
cover but doesn't block air flow and with stands temps up to 250 F. Any
suggestions or thoughts? Thanks all, Dwaine 66SS
