Yes, you could use /24 subnet masks, and with your addressing scheme this would be the proper thing to do. Address them like this: Router1: Ethernet 0 10.0.1.1 255.255.255.0 Serial 010.0.2.1 255.255.255.0 Serial 110.0.3.1 255.255.255.0 Router 2: Ethernet 0 10.0.1.2 255.255.255.0 Serial 010.0.2.2 255.255.255.0 Serial 110.0.3.2 255.255.255.0 In you examples below, you have inconsistent subnet masks on each end of your router links. The masks must be consistent and each link must be on its own subnet. Another issue, which would make things fun to play with, is the fact that you have three links between the same two routers. Perhaps you should start with setting up a single link first, and then add the other links later to see how it affects your routing. Good luck! Hey Group, I finished reading Lammle's CCDA and allready got one of the Boson tests for CCDA. I registered to write the test on July 31st. This was the earliest I could schedule for the test at that location. Concidering that I have another month to prepare, I was pondering the idea of reading another book...Can't hurt right? ;) I was wondering which one to get? I looked at BN, and found CCDA Cram notes. This one looks good to me cause it only has about 300 pages and I think I could fit that in easily, but I've also seen people comment on the top-down network design book. CCDA Case Studies? Where are they?
Hey Groupies, Well I got back good responces on my ccda prep post so I wanted to thank you all for that. One of the, most stressed, things were the case studies on the test. I, myself, understand that this will be the hardest thing on the test. Now my question is simple: I can get all the practice questions in the world...but where can I find practice case studies??? My book only has like 3 and I would like to try a wider variety before the test. Anybody got any ideas??? BGP - 1 DS3, 4 backup T1s, 1 ISP
Hello folks that are also "Geeking Out" over the 4th of July--- We are revamping the Internet architecture, and we are going to have a brand new external 7507 with 1 new DS3 and 4 T1s. There will be EBGP and static routing. Right now the T1s are on the existing external router with static routes and OSPF. The internal router (and it's replacement 7507) has/will have static routes and EIGRP. EIGRP is the main protocol in the netork. Anyway, the 4 T1s will backup the DS3, but when the backup occurs, I'd like them to load share. I read that ebgp-multihop is the technique to use when load sharing parallel links, using the loopbacks vs. the regular neighbor addresses. a. Can you tell me if my proposed BGP config is correct or point out things that are wrong or missing? Config. is below. b. Is this backup strategy good? c. The T1s won't be used unless the DS3 dies, right? d. Do I need to worry about filters or attributes (like weights, local preference, MED, etc.) in this case? e. Oh, should I do ip route-cache or no ip route-cache on the T1s and DS3? I figure leave the defaults ip route-cache to save on CPU cycles. f. I want this config. to be a stepping stone in case the we decide to connect to another ISP. It seems to me using HSRP would be the best thing to do. That way, not only do the two routers act as redundant links for each other, they can load balance across them. Mike W. Ken, ATM is definately on the lab. I suggest getting the CCIE All-in-One Study guide (hardcover) It has 80 different labs you can do in your home lab. It was my understanding that if you have completed let's say in my case acrc and clsc for ccnp 1.0 that even after July 31, you can still complete the ccnp 1.0 by doing the support and bcran. Is this correct? Now I'm starting to have my doubts after reading some of the posts. On July 31, you will no longer be able to take the old tests but you can still use them to get your ccnp it will just be the 1.0 version. This is my understanding please correct me if I'm am wrong. One of my favorite pastimes is to argue with the various authors of the Boson tests about things in the material that is ambiguous or confusing. Those poor guys who wrote the CID practice tests. They're gonna just start deleting my mail without reading it :-> In the case you mention, this is not untypical of the Boson tests. To be fair, it is not untypical of some of the questions on Cisco testes either :-> You can always take advantage of the option to e-mail the author. I have found the writers to be quite willing to clarify things. This does not mean their answer is "right", but at least you'll get a better feel for the reasoning. Besides. In my experience, the Boson authors are pro's, and like to help folks out. Now that I actually have a copy of course material to refer to ( notice how in the Boson correction, much of the answer justification is based on references to course material ) and can look things up, I see a lot of things that are interesting. One of which is that sometimes the course material is a bit dated. Another of which is that sometimes Cisco itself isn't consistent from one exam to the next in terms of what the right answer may be. Another of which is that sometimes even the authors of the quizzes and the supplementary study guides may find themselves a bit amused, not to mention confused, by some of the arbitrariness of some of Cisco's promulgations. Both the books I am reading for CID/CCDP for example, have comments regarding real world vs. test world. I would say that the Boson tests in general, are much like Cisco tests. Count on missing 2-3 questions just because they are poorly worded, or confusing, or flat out wrong. The rest - just get yourself into the Cisco frame of mind. Foundation Exam 640-409/CCNP 1
All, I am preparing for the foundation exam 640-409/ccnp1 and looking for feedback concerning the weight of the subject matter from each of the 3 exams. Basically if if may be more weighted toward the acrc, clsc, cmdt etc. Also I found out Cisco changed it to 70Q/75 minutes. Wondered what that meant? If the questions will be more specific or general? BGP Issue
It seems that I cannot get me 134.141.11.0/24 network redistributed into OSPF. If you look at my router 3 and 4 configs I setup the route-map and redistribution the same. 192.168.253.0/24 gets propogated into OSPF as an E2 route just like I wanted but the 134.141.11.0 doesn't. AS5300 with IOS 12.0(7)T
Hi all, I recently face an issue of AS5300 running with IOS 12.0(7)T. Once I finish configured the AS5300, everything is running fine(like modem dial in). If I reset the AS5300, I still use a modem to dial in to the AS5300 and get the ip address(from the ip pool). But the dial in client can't communicate with the AS5300 anymore eventhough you got the ip assigned by the AS5300. If I erased the configuration on AS5300, and reapply the same configuration to the AS5300, then it's work again. I can understand the concerns some people may have about the upcoming retirement of the ver 1.0 exams. Although the gist of Cisco knowledge and general knowledge isn't going to change from 1.0 to 2.0, the equipment specific stuff is, and as some have noted things like BGP has been beefed up. It has often been debated here, the benefits of hands on versus certification with the general opinion being both are required but a lot more weight going to the hands on. Which is great but if you're studying to take an exam and it changes there can be (and is) a feeling that you've wasted time on stuff you're not going to be tested on and also that you're now not prepared. Now before I get flamed about "knowledge is the journey - not the exam", just think about it. It doesn't feel good to fail. You could be God's gift to networking but you still have to know Cisco's answer and you still have to know the product Cisco decides to test on. You could be working up at the Enterprise WAN side of things and you get asked about low end equipment or vice versa. You know this however and you study, but then the exam changes. Hey, all's fair but it's nice to know the rules beforehand. I'm sure this is why we're seeing a lot of people pushing to get to CCNP before 31 July. Not because they think they won't be able to pass a 2.0 exam - but because now they have to reconsider what has changed and make sure that has been covered in their previous preparations which probably involves more time, more books and maybe another course. We might be smart but who wants to throw a single question away if they don't have to? I'm guilty of this type of thinking. I sat around leisurely studying until bang - announcement of exams being retired. At that time I was only CCNA/CCDA. I perked up and put myself on a schedule to get CCNP my end July and maybe CCDP. (CCDP wasn't as important as the CID isn't being retired yet). I have accomplished both goals one month early so perhaps the retirement was something that just put a fire under my rear - but I did think that I better take these exams as I know what's on them as they have been discussed extensively on this list for the year I've been a member. When it comes to my business card or resume there isn't a ver 1.0 or ver 2.0 behind the certs - not legal anyway, but it feels good to have them now. Now I can concentrate on getting to ver 2.0 but the urgency isn't so high and maybe I can take some time out for life since I've studied hard for the last 3 months or so. I can also sit back a little and listen to what people are saying abut the ver 2.0 exams which will make getting to ver 2.0 that much simpler. So I think the nervousness is natural. I'm also a MCSE 3.51/4.0 but Microsoft has given us until 31 Dec 2001 to recertify so I'm chilling that and let others panic about getting it soonest. my lowly take. i agree with the previous message. i don't think it is supported anything under 7000. however, you will not see the command that is not supported in the config mode. i should not be 100% sure but i think it has been the tendancy. besides running netflow on 2XXX, you wnat to run netflow on core and possibly on distribution. not access-layer. read document man. everything is there. --- FREE! Besides, I'd rather not have to learn all the new info for the Switching test AND have to learn all the Routing test info. That's a lot of information! And that doesn't even take Support into account. I'd personally rather tackle each one individually. And The Patriot is an excellent movie! I'm definitely going to go see it again. Floating statics which point to a next hop address are, of course, hard-coded routes in your IGP table... no matter if the metric for a secondary or backup route has a larger AD the one with the smaller AD is hard-coded in the route table; if it goes down, there's no way for the route table to know it. What I have done to overcome this is to use the interface itself as the next hop, e.g.: 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 Serial0/0.1 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 Serial0/0.2 200 ... but, truth be known, I do not have a very granular explanation why this configuration is able to dynamically perform routing table maintenance. Largely because of my lack of hands-on at that time, it was far and away the hardest written exam I have ever taken. RouterSim 2.0 Evaluations Wanted
Group; I've looked at the Archives and been unable to get a complete picture of the effectiveness of RouterSim 2.0 My study mates and I are considering RouterSim 2.0 as a study tool. Primarily we are looking for the ISDN, access lists and the switching functionality. I saw a fairly negative post by a disgruntled purchaser and I would like other opinions. Boson has me confused. Regarding Multilayer Switching, how would one define a flow? Cisco Press and http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/lan/cat5000/rel_4_5/config/mls.htm#42593 make a flow seem like a stream of packets. However, to have distinction between different types of conversations, ip and port are assessed "A flow is a unidirectional sequence of packets between a particular source and destination that share the same protocol and transport-layer information." Boson asks, "A flow is a stream of segments between any two ip address/port number pairs" or "A flow is a stream of packets between any two IP addresses". The first is asserted as correct. Confusing, even after looking at it so long. Is Cisco using the term packet out of context or is Boson just trying to enforce the granularity of the question? It seems to me that this is a simple concept and should be reworded something like "http and ftp would be treated as TWO seperate flows between an identical pair of hosts." However, is this still a stream of SEGMENTS or PACKETS?
