buffer overflow

2000-07-10 Thread Nathan Cruz

I am trying to boot up a 3000 router I bought
recently. When I try to boot up it tries to netboot but of course it can't
because I don't have the file it tftp'ed from in production. I went in to rmon
and changed it to manual boot, when I boot from ROM it comes up and goes through
the boot process then it says "hit return to get started" when I do it cycles
through and says the same thing again.

When I try to net boot from a tftp server it starts
the file transfer then it says "{buffer overflow  - 3541504/3541154 bytes}
I have 8 meg flash in the server. Is there a way to erase the flash without
getting into config mode. Or any suggestion on how to get this thing up and
running. Thanks

No problem. You dish is C-band. Just plug the serial cable to your

ip addresses then you are ready to go.

Monitoring Traffic

2000-07-10 Thread Nahrajieh Anggaon

Dear friends,

How do you monitor traffic that trigger DDR on a Cisco isdn router? What
command do you use to monitor in real time what station is causing the DDR?
We configured a Cisco 1700 series that dials to two different location. One
is to the internet and one to Head office. The problem is that router is
dialing where no one is using any application. I noticed that after the
router is
disconnected, after a few seconds it dialed again.

Thanks in advanced.

Re: Which access-list increase load the most?

2000-07-10 Thread Paul Borghese

MRTG can do CPU/Memory. You just need to find the correct MIB and set it up
MRTG. Start looking under 1.3.6.1.4.1.9.local.system.

I believe the CPU mib is around .56-58 under cisco.local.system but I am
doing this from memory so I may be way off. Look in the Cisco doc set or
use snmpwalk.

Hello all wiser than I:

If I've got two 2600 series routers, both with the Internal T-1/Frac T-1

it just a cable? If so, which kind? Also, can I then channelize the full

Do I use a different cable if I need to hook up to 56k DS0 WICs instead?

RE: 2501's back to back

2000-07-10 Thread Jim Mayoh

Kevin;

I started out with very similar equipment and I would like to add to Rauls
suggestions. Once the two routers are configured and communicating "back
to back":

1. I suggest that you spend a "little" more money. Invest in two cheap
10BaseT hubs c/w Cat5 cables and use the two AUI transcievers to connect
the LANS to the routers. I suspect that you could find this equipment for
less than $50.00

2. I then set up a terminal session from my PC to the console port on
either router (I use Terra Term Pro, far more reliable and easier to use
than HyperTerminal).

3. Set up a LAN connection through the ethernet port on your PC on to either
LAN segment, remember that each LAN will have a unique IP address and you
will probably have to reboot your PC to switch LANS. Once all the IP
addressing is in place you can do a lot of configurations, labs, TFTP loads
etc. on this set-up.

4. I think one of the most fascinating things I do is to capture the packets
travelling on the LAN. It's pretty easy to get hold of promiscuous mode LAN
analyser software such as SnifferPro, NetXRay etc. This will allow you to
really see the OSI model at work!

I used this set up to do everything from RIP to OSPF and like they say there
is no substitute for actual doing the configurations and figuring out what
went wrong and why.

I hope this helps you get an idea what is possible with the equipment that
you have.

Yours truly;
Jim Mayoh

That's the line voltage on a telephone line, and
as we know, a telephone line does not carry a

Re: High availability design with FR, how?

2000-07-10 Thread John Neiberger

If you're worried about your 4500 dying, then either buy another to have
there waiting, or get a 24/7 service contract that would get a replacement
to you quickly if needed. If you're worried about the circuits to your
building going down all at once, then you simply need to get separate
redundant links to your provider.

If you're worried about the provider, then things get a little stickier. To
again quote Howard the Great, "What is the problem you are trying to solve?"
It's such a great quote, why not use it? And it applies. Redundancy is
fine, but what exactly is it that you're worried about? To gain complete
and full redundancy would be an expensive venture at best, and a nightmare
at worst. How much is it worth to your company?

If your system goes down for a short period, are you losing a lot of money?
Are you in e-commerce? Can you handle being down for a few hours? If so,
then get the service contract. If you absolutely cannot handle being down
for more than a very brief period, then make sure the higher-ups understand
that this type of redundancy *might* get very expensive very quickly.

Then again, it all depends. :-)

VSAT connection

2000-07-10 Thread Yip Chan Keong

Dear all,

Does anyone has any experience in connecting VSATs to AS5300? We have a 20W
VSAT antenna with a 301 IDU which is in turn connected to a 2600 router.
the AS5300 is connected to the 2600 thru ethernet.

Can anyone comment if this arrangement is OK?

Many thanks in advanced.
best regards,

Re: High availability design with FR, how?

2000-07-10 Thread John Neiberger

We have a design similar to that, and it does create some difficulties. To
make it worse, not only do we have a "duplicate" standby router, but an IBM
mainframe as well! here's the layout:

We have about 90 remote branches, and about 30 of those are considered
"front line" branches with PVCs connected back to our HQ. The remaining
branches have redundant connections to the front line branches. All
branches, however, have another PVC that goes over the frame relay network
to an AT&T POP and from there back to our HQ on a clear channel T-1 with
frame encapsulation. In the event of a disaster at our HQ, we simply dial
in and move the circuit so that instead of pointing to our HQ, it points to
our disaster recovery facility where we have a 7513 and an IBM s/390 waiting
at our disposal.

The obvious downside to this is that it is VERY expensive. Your
organization would have to have some big bucks to have this setup. Our side
of any switchover is fairly easy. We swing the circuit over and someone
loads up the latest config from our main router onto the new router.
There's not much more to it than that, but it took a LOT of work to make it
this easy. We have a 7513 running IP, DLSW+, tn3270-server, channel
connections to the mainframe...it's fairly complicated and required a lot of
fine-tuning.

It's important to note, though, that in our case we are not using HSRP, per
say. We do have a standby router, but it's not "hot". Timeliness is an
issue. In the case of a disaster, several members of our disaster recovery
team fly to the recovery site (across the country) and get everything
rolling. It takes some time, but it sure beats being down for days when
you're losing thousands of dollars a day, not to mention losing customers
and making current customers very angry with you.

HTH,
John Neiberger

Re: High availability design with FR, how?

2000-07-10 Thread John Hardman

Hi

It is not so much the out lying sites I am worried about, I have a dial
backup (ISDN BRI to PRI) now. There are only a couple of sites that fall
under the HSRP mandate.

But I have a single 4500 doing the host part (i.e. the hub in a hub and
spoke design) of the FR network. So what I need to do is have the 4500
backed by another 4500 running HSRP and have all interface serial and
ethernet failover.

Thanks for the reply!

Re: Which access-list increase load the most?

2000-07-10 Thread Howard C. Berkowitz

Absolutely true that it depends -- and it depends on even more factors.

Even more important than the pure CPU load is the switching path that
will be caused by using a given access list (or other feature that
examines traffic). This is especially true on high-end routers with
multiple processors, which can do distributed forwarding and
filtering.

If, for example, you add a filter to a 7500 and don't watch what you
are doing, you could jump from DCEF (that doesn't go through the CPU
at all) to fast switching. Optimum and both NetFlow and Distributed
NetFlow would probably have been better options.

Unfortunately, the rules just aren't simple. The forwarding path for
a particular feature depends on the IOS release level, possibly
microcode levels, platform, and interface type.

Questions on CCNP exams

2000-07-10 Thread Bob Edmonds

I was enrolled in the cisco networking academy for 2 years at my highschool
and have just graduated this year. While in the academy I was using a CCNA
practice exam program that ciscopress put out. While using this program I
noticed many errors, you know wrong questions/answers. I sent and email to
ciscopress notifying them of this problem, and they responed by asking me to
do a review of the 850 questions and let them know which ones were bad, and
in return they said that they would pay me. I wrote them back saying that I
would gladly do the review and as far as payment went all I wanted was some
free books. The executive editor of ciscopress wrote back saying just send
me a list of the books you want and you'll have them. I sent a list that
consisted of 9 books and sure enough, once I completed the review, he sent
me the books as well as a check (the check was much unexpected and much
appreciated!!!).
Now begins the questions. I've read that the CCNP exams' format has
been changed and new material will be covered in order to reach the level of
CCNP. I was wondering if the books that I got: which are the CCNP
preperation library, BCMSN, ACRC (Laura Chappell), as well as DCN (for the
CCDA), CCDA, and the CID book: will these books be "outdated" due to the
change? And if so, what will I need to supplement this change in the exams?
Basically what I'm asking is , where can I get the knowlege need to pass the
exams?
I've been reading the posts on this news group for a 2 days now and it
seems to me that this place is awesome!!! Everyone here is soo helpful and
knowlegable of cisco equipment. Ohhh, and by the way I just passed the CCNA
exam on July 8th, I only whish I would have found this group before I did.
I found it the night before the test and spent hours reading the posts.
Well this is getting rather lengthy so I'll be stopping now. Any
information be helpful.

Thank you,

Bob

RE: High availability design with FR, how?

2000-07-10 Thread Odell, Jeff

John,

Depending on your bandwidth needs you might want to consider ISDN. My
company uses BRI ISDN to back up each frame relay connection. Fairly
inexpensive and with a few lines in your router config, can automatically
come up when the frame relay goes down. I would recommend a 800 series
router for relatively low traffic sites (I use them for small offices of up
to 30 people) to back up a 2600 running the frame connection.

All in all, it is a relatively cheap and functional solution.

If you share some more info like your bandwidth requirements, etc. I am sure
others will chime in with other recommendations.

Hi All...

I have a mandate from on high that all of our routers now have HSRP support.
Not a problem on the LAN side, and I have worked out the point to point line
issues by using channelized lines and creating two serial lines. But the
frame relay (FR) is killing me!

So far the only solution seems to be with the telco providing a second FR
host line that in the event of failure we call a computer at their end and
dial a few numbers and the PVCs are moved to the secondary FR host line.
Needless to say doesn't sound too hot to me, as it requires that everything
work just right to get a reasonable failover, and this may not be in a
timely manner.

Anyone have any thoughts?

RE: Running a DC powered Catalyst 1900 ???

2000-07-10 Thread Ray Mosely

Somebody else said that it was 48
volts.
That's
the line voltage on a telephone line, and
as we
know, a telephone line does not carry a
lot of
amps, so almost any 48 volt source would be
enough.
Two
marine batteries, or four garden tractor batteries
would
carry it for many days before needing re-charging.
You
could hook up 8 of those big square 6 volt batteries.
5 or 6
9-volt batteries would probably run it, but they would
poop
out pretty quickly.

The
best bet is to find a telco supply, like Marlin P. Jones,
and
order a 48 volt power supply.
http:/www.mpja.com
Their
catalog lists 48 volt supplies starting at $4.00 and up.

Good
luck,

transmit data. Does this depent on a Cisco interface or is there a standard
for. I also would like to no what are the difference between an channelized

What kind of info is transmitted over TS 0 ?

Any help or good resources about an E1 are apreciated.

Thanks in advance

Re: set up a WAN

2000-07-10 Thread John Neiberger

This depends on several factors:

1. Do you need connectivity only to transfer this file, or are there other
applications for which you need site-to-site access?

2. Is speed really a necessity? In other words, does this file have to get
there really fast or do you mind if it takes a while?

3. How much money do you have to spend?

If you only need the circuit up to transfer files from time to time, you
could check into getting ISDN lines set up. Configure your routers for DDR
and make the file transfer traffic "interesting."

If speed isn't really a consideration, go buy some 33.6 modems and be done
with it. This might create some high long distance phone bills, so you'd
have to weigh that cost against the cost of these other services.

If you need connections up all the time, check into DSL, point-to-point T-1
or fractional T-1, or frame relay services over T-1 or fractional T-1.

There are some other factors, but I think we need to get answers to these
questions before we go any further.

Good luck,
John Neiberger

This may sound a bit off bit I remember seeing an article on Microsofts site
about protocol bindings and Outlook/Exchange. I used to do this at a place I
worked a year ago but I forget what the key is? Basically from what I
remember - the IP protocol was last on the list so the client->server would
try to talk all protocols until it got to IP at the end.

I will jump off now an see if I can find it for you.

2000-07-10 Thread Dale Holmes

Without knowing your methods of preparation I can only assume that you
studied from the "blueprint" and covered all the objectives therein.

Based on that assumption, here are 2 things to do:

1. Relax. Take you time during the exam, there is plenty of it...
2. Know what a RIF is, and who sets it under what circumstances...

If you have studied well, that should get you through the exam.

Good Luck!

Probably not ;((
if you are using a IRC chat stuff, then the common ip port could be 6667,
you may need to open this one then :)

Onderwerp: Internet chat..www traffic??

hello cisco people.
We have a series of access lists that are meant to ensure that all access to
the
internet via the browser goes through a proxy server. If an access list has
been
configured in such a way that it ensures that all www traffic to the
Internet
comes off a proxy server is it still possible to use chat software. if chat
does
not constitute www traffic then what is it.

Thanks in advance

Re: BGP exercises for BSCN

The technical information in Hutnik's book together with the labs are enough
resources on BGP.
I don't remember if it had any info on BGP clusters, though; That and
Certificationzone's whitepaper on BGP (the first one) were my sources.

Re: Easy Brain Teaser (Switching)

2000-07-10 Thread Matt Holbert

I have to agree with Joe (alhtough not in the same tone). I'm willing to
take it a step further, and say the cable doesn't even have to be pulled
out. As soon as the switch hears the MAC address on a different port, the
CAM table is updated.

Take HSRP for example. If you have two routers connected to the same switch
both running HSRP, if one goes down the other takes over almost immediately.
This means the CAM table must be updated almost immediately as well because
the virtual IP address has the same MAC address.

You can use Cisco 340 series wireless bridge which gives you around
11mpbs bandwidth and can be use to connect 2048 separate LANs. For
the 500 mile one you should find another way like framerelay, satellite
link, fiber

are no problem, you keep your certification as CCNA, any way, the CCNA 2.0
is easy, it just ask a little more about concepts and study cases.

FS: Cisco 2502

2000-07-10 Thread Diegmueller, Jason (I.T. Dept)

I am selling one of my Cisco 2502s because I don't need it anymore.
I'm looking to sell it direct as opposed to turning to eBay, thus
the email to here.

16MB DRAM, 8MB flash, 12.0(11) IP Plus IOS. Newest BootROMs straight
from Cisco already installed. I of course can and will include the
console cable, aux cable, and power cable.

I'll probably give it until the end of the week before I turn to eBay
if I don't hear from anyone first. Any fair offer will be considered,
simply because I hate the hassle of auction sites. :)

Re: Weird response

2000-07-10 Thread John Barnes

Ping sends an ICMP echo request, tracert may send ICMP
echo request or it may send a UDP packet. If the
tracert you are using is sending UDP (with increasing
TTLs), then an access list or firewall could be
reponsible for what you are seeing.

Ping works off of ICMP echo request/echo replies.

Tracert works off of the TTL value, it starts off with
a TTL of 1, then sends with TTL of 2 etc.. The router
that kills the packet sends an ICMP TTL expired back
to the sending host, so that's how it learns the path.
The outbound packet type is really irrelevant (it's
discarded), so empty UDP will work instead of an echo
request.

A Frame relay may be what you need.. cost tends to drop the more circuits
that you have.. plus you can adjust the CIR (speed) as you see fit with the
provider. How often does the file get transferred and how quickly does it
have to get there? If it gets tranferred overnight once.. a few IDSN lines
may be a better way to go..Need a little more info to give you a better
answer..

RE: Firewall feature set feedback

2000-07-10 Thread Daniel Cotts

Read the Docs. Use ConfigMaker to create a ballpark view. Edit as needed.
Best to know exactly what you want to do. Use a protocol analyzer such as
EtherPeek to test and verify. Easy with two interfaces. More interesting
with three or more.

RE: Quick Puzzle

2000-07-10 Thread Ole Drews Jensen

:-)

I always like to see if I can get to a solution in at least one different
way than the most likely; Sometimes it turnes out to be more efficient like
in this example.

If you want to multiply X with 20 on your computer, you could ask it to do
it like this

Result := X * 20;

But it would actually be done faster, and thereby use less instructions, to
do it like this

Result := (X shl 4) + (X shl 2);

Shifting bits left (or right) and adding takes up less instructions than the
multiply function.

I know this is about 788 lightyears away from setting up a router as a
bridge, but I am just trying to draw a parallel.

BSCN Routing 2.0

2000-07-10 Thread joel.studtmann

Well, all, after all the horror stories I've heard
about ACRC, I just smoked the BSCN test with a 954.
Yes, I am very proud of myself :)

I like their alternative to the old 'type in the
command' box:  for those that haven't already heard, they give
you an exhibit with a bunch of different commands on it, and you put in the
number of the correct command.  (Or your best guess).

No more worries about trying to remember which
commands are plural (they were generally eigrp), and for the bad spellers, no
worries about if it's I before E in neighbor.

As to what I studied:

Originally, when I studied for the ACRC
exam, I read through both the Cisco Press book and Lammle's book.  At the
time, I didn't feel comfortable with a lot of the material.  The
books are designed primarily to get you to pass the test;  not necessarily
to teach you all the material.

I read Doyle's book almost cover to cover,
(skimming over IS-IS and some of the chapters that weren't in ACRC), and was
ready to take the ACRC exam in April.  Work related issues came up, was
gone through the end of June.

When I returned, I gambled and registered
for the BCSN instead of ACRC.  My main reference for the new topics (BGP,
policy routing) were Hutnik's All-IN-One LAB study guide and the first BGP white
paper at certificationzone.  I ran through some of the BGP and route-map
labs, reviewed OSPF and EIGRP yesterday, and took the test this
morning.

The Boson test was a big help.  While
the interface is still a little buggy, the simulated exam material was
excellent.

Going for BCRAN next week,

cisco homepage help!!

2000-07-10 Thread jeongwoo park

Hi everybody.
I was trying to login on cisco homepage, but I couldn't.
what is CCO?
Should I be a cisco customer who has purchased cisco product to login to
CCO?
I am a CCNA. Does it qualify me to be CCO user?
I have seen many links that I couldn't go through. Is that because I am not
a CCO user?
Could somebody clarify this?
Thanks in advance

Passed BCRAN today!!

2000-07-10 Thread Lonnie Paschall

Just passed the BCRAN today. I used the Cisco Press Builiding Cisco Remote
Access Networks book and the boson exams. The test was easier than the
others (ACRC, CLSC). I was suprised to find so many x25 questions in such a
new exam. Cant actually tell you any questions but I would know you ISDN
commands, X25, and Frame-Relay. Now on to CIT!!!

Amazon.com by isbn and got no luck their either. The lady at Barnes&Nobles
told me that the ISBN number is 1 digital to long.

Make one unnumbered to the other. If you have an IP address configured on
the Serial0 port, go to interface config mode for the Ethernet0 and enter
the command:

"ip unnumbered Serial 0"

How can you configure the same IP subnet on more than one interface in a
Cisco router?

set up a WAN

2000-07-10 Thread rayza manesh

How would you design this?
5 locations separated about 15 miles from each other.
The sixth site is located about 500 miles away.
There will be big file (5-10 MB)transferring between these sites.

Considering the cost what technology you would suggest.

Thanks for your respond

notifying the appropriate personnel of the true root cause of a failure when
a network outage occurs ( ie dhcp fails broadcast fails, switch port is
down, etc...

this is the only ok one i can find..does any1 have any more
suggestions??? and has any1 use this program in the network business
