Hi. I run another port scan test. This time the only service
which was up was telnet. Meanwhile the routers are 2501 which
I said 2503. Please check whether your routers support these
commands and inform me:
ip cef
rate-limit

Thanks
cheers

Re: Cisco Prerequisites

2000-08-05 Thread Oz

Erik,

That took about 2 minutes to find on the web and you probably needed
service pack applied ..
Thats what the hell that means and we all know you hate windows and thats
fine .
But please you cannot tell new folks to forget it .. I have worked in
huge enviroments that had lots of NT and windows and many issues would
not have been solved if my knowledge of NT was not there..
As a router dude you can get a lot of issues that can SEEM to be wan
related when in fact it can be simple desktop/server issues..
Sure there are many folks out there that know networking and unix but also
by not knowing NT windows could limit those same folks too .
Just like my limited Unix limits me .too.
And for folks just starting up NT is fine as chances are they will start
at the desktop anyhow ..
And there is not many unix desktops around these days .
And whether you like it or not Cisco is making more stuff for NT all the
time and there are some that are NT windows only ..
I don't care for any particular OS to me they all are the same.. But I
have to care because many places are multi OS environments and you need to
know a little about them all.
And I am not trying to start an OS war here just trying to give some
balance here..
The market has shifted and thats a fact and so will the workforce have to
shift in the direction of the market it's just that simple..
For someone on a limited budget NT can help them out sure they can do
Linux but right now there is not much market for entry level Linux folks.
Whereas win NT desktop there is tons of work..

And for Adedapo MTA errors usually are due to corrupted databases but I
have not played with exchange for a long time. But usally running MTACHECK
will fix it

A fatal MTA database server error was encountered. A bad list member

e1/r2 can only accept analog meanwhile isdn (PRI) can accept both
analog/digital since
they use different signalling, on-hook/off hook bits ,etc...

RE:

2000-08-05 Thread J. Oquendo

Well I hope I don't sound like out of line for mentioning
this but its very annoying and disturbing.

Please refrain from sending out messages without anything
in the subject lines. Its a very bad practice altogether.
I'm sure many on this list are also on other mailing lists
and it becomes difficult to determine which messages
should be read and which should be ignored.

Pesky little messages such as "Yes", "No", "where do I
find?" should be the last message someone sends out
without an effort to:

a. Answer someone properly
b. Provide relevancy in their messages
c. Search for an answer before asking it, e.g. checking
the archives, search engines, etc.

I was hoping this would be an all purpose mailing list and
not one filled with pesky little questions such as. How
many questions on the CCNA s/NA/DP\s/NA/IE/ etc.

Professionalism above all should stand out on this list
when addressing questions and or providing answers, after
all what are some of you high school retards or
professionals?

As for Brad Ellis selling equipment on the list... Who
cares its nice to see someone with a CCIE responding to
questions. He doesn't have answer squat and his presence
gives many confidence to move forward with their studies.

And working at some large corporation does not give anyone the right to believe their
better than anyone else even if its working for Cisco directly.

Putting someone down for something shows your own deficiencies, so if you have nothing
positive to say you know what...

Don't say it.

2000-08-05 Thread kien theng lee

hi, =)

oh, i am a full time telecommunications student who is about to get his
masters degree in 4 months (dec 2000). i have been studying CCNA, ACRC and
had some hands on training with the IOS. i am currently working on BCRAN.

i need to get a job by december or next year jan because of my status in the
US. i have about 2500 to 3000 dollars to spend on anything, a cert that can
help me to get a job real soon. cisco training (instructor- led) is too
expensive, therefore i am thinking about MCSE. a little cheaper. i have only
a PC at home that's all. and i do not have time to shop for any home
networking equipment because again, i am going to school full time and my
time staying in U.S is until feb.
i was under the impression that any cert will helpme to get a job sooner
than none. thank you

Interesting. I have now removed the access-list that was applied inbound to
the port in question.

FYI the access-list was access-list 101 permit tcp any host 64.220.150.9 eq

Said list would most definitely have denied your trace. And all the pings

The access-list, at the time of removal, indicated 1200 hits or so, Might

I tested telnet access from here, but of course I'm on the inside. :->

Re: Friday Follies Returns!!!!!!! - A small Puzzle

2000-08-05 Thread Scott Jordan

Here's most of your answers

Scott

1) what version of IOS is running?
-> 12.1(2)

2) What is the name of the IOS image?
-> C2500-jos56i-1.121-2.bin

3) What routing protocols are running?
-> IP, IPX - Routed Protocols
-> Frame-Relay - Routing Protocols
Should have looked deeper on this one but forgot - probably EIGRP or OSPF.

4) Are there any other routers connected? If so, on what ports?
-> S0

5) If there are other routers connected, what IOS versions are they running?
-> 12.1(2)

What are the names of the flash images on those routers, if there are
routers?
-> C2500-JOS561-L

6) Provide every detail you can about any WAN protocols running
-> Frame-Relay DLCI 300 on S0

7) What is the privilege level password?

8) What model number router are you telneted into?
-> 2500

9) What model number routers are connected, if there are any connected?
-> 2500

10) Who played the Cisco Kid? ( extra credit - how did you find that
answer? )
-> DuncanReynoldoPlayedCiscoKid - Router name of neighbor

11) Extra Extra credit - identify all security enabled on the router

Re: VPN 3DES ON 2MB Link with 25XX

2000-08-05 Thread Chuck Larrieu

Have fiannly gotten around to printing out the IPSec Design Guide published
on the Cisco site.

http://www.cisco.com/cpropart/sync-src/ccstcp/cc/techno/protocol/ipsecur/ips
ec/tech/
watch the word wrap
need a CCO login to get there

rather interesting publication, with 15 pages on IPSec, 27 pages on design
considertions, and over 370 pages of case studies/configurations!

the relevant protion to this conversation is the design guide, which does
talk about performance, memory usage, and processor impact. The information
presented is not a complete as I would hope, but it is indicative.

for example, using a 16xx router, and a 125K clockrate on a back to back
serial link, a file transfer that took 10 minutes with no encryption took
only 18 seconds longer using IPSec. CPU usage was at 29% on average during
the tests. ( The publication states that "the same test was run several
times and the times were averaged together")

Although there are several charts measuring bandwidth % used with different
size packets on several router platforms, I am disappointed to find that
this presentation is not particularly detailed, nor particularly rigorous.

One chart compares performnce in megabits per second of several routers, one
of which is a 2514 ( no 2501's ). Said router without encryption perfermed
in the range of 2.4-9.9 mbs, and with AH and ESP enabled dropped to 01.-0.2
mbs. there is a column labeled "suggested bandwidth" but no explaination in
the text. There is a rather interesting line stating that "the suggested
bandwidth is reduced from the maximum possible to bring the CPU utilization
more within accepted limits"

the same table states that a 7505 popping AH and ESP was filling a 6 mbs
serial link with a 70-75% CPU usage rate.

All this leads me to infer that the chances are very good that doing what
you are planning to do will be bad for the router. IPSec checws up processor
cycles. With a T-1 to fill, your poor CPU's are going to burn along at 100%
utilization to fiull that bandwidth. Not good for router!

Given these kinds of numbers, you may find your remote users complaining a
lot about "slow performance" and with good reason. your 2 meg pipe becomes a
100K pipe, assuming the router doesn't shut down a lot due to overload.

Anyone got some other good reads on IPSec and router resource utilization?

Would you please provide an example or two to the

while folks may take issue with writing styles, I find
it difficult to believe that 'Mr. CCNA' would have
many errors. The guy has trained hundreds to pass the

then please do all of us a favor and call them out to
augment the learning process.

Thanks.

E1/R2 Signaling

2000-08-05 Thread lee

Hi all, I've configured an E1/R2 on AS5300 for a customer. Actually this
E1/R2 is use for WAP(Wireless Application Protocol) testing, which is using
Nokia 7110 WAP cell phone to dial to the E1/R2 line. Basically Nokia 7110
WAP have 2 kinds of call type, first one is 'analog' and the second one is
'ISDN'. I managed to use 'analog' call type to dial in to the E1/R2 line but
not 'ISDN'.
Can I assume that the E1/R2 line cannot accept 'ISDN' call ???
I've checked with the Cisco TAC engineer about this issue, but they couldn't
conform to me whether E1/R2 can accept 'ISDN' call or not.
I hope someone can give me the answer on this.

Thanks in advance.

regard,
lee

I can see a number of people attempting to connect. My side is reporting
things like BAD Seg and BAD SEQUENCE NUMBER

A couple of you have been kind enough to provide outputs from traceroutes,
both before and after I removed my access list ( which shouldn't have caused
a problem anyway )

I set up a computer on the same subnet as the router in question, and have
no trouble telnetting in, access-list or not.

So, I'm attempting to contact my ISP to see what they have to say.

As you can see, the router in question has a public IP address, and at this
point is not behind any other device on my side which could be interfering.

Sorry about that.

What are the names of the flash images on those routers, if there are

RE: --- Not own broadcast

2000-08-05 Thread Bob Vance

I found this question interesting.
Maybe, I missed it, but I'm surprised that there wasn't more discussion
on
this one.

> 192.168.1.16/29 - R1 - 192.168.1.32/29
>|
>|192.168.1.252/30

> 192.168.1.255.
>which node or nodes will receive the packet?
> a) All nodes on all subnetworks
> b) Only the node at address 192.168.1.255
> c) Only the nodes on subnetwork 192.168.1.16 that have broadcast
reception
>enabled
> d) All nodes on subnetwork 192.168.1.16
> e) All nodes on subnetworks 192.168.1.16, 192.168.1.32, and
192.168.1.48

My answer is D.

The question says nothing about *accepting* the packet,
so it's reduced to a routing question:

Onto which segments, if any, will the routers send this packet?

I believe that the question, as stated, doesn't have enough information
to
be answered absolutely (but, then which ones do ;>).

Certainly, all nodes on the local segment, 192.168.1.16, will receive
the
packet (whether or not they accept the packet is entirely another
question,
although we hope that the author understands the distinction |>)
So, D) could be a correct answer.
B is out, since it is at a minimum a subnet broadcast address, not a
specific node address.
E and C
(Let's leave out the question of,
"...what the meaning of "is", is."
)
are also right out.
So, we are left with whether A is correct.

Under classful rules, with subnet prefix length /29, the address
192.168.1.255
is host 7 on subnet 192.168.1.248/29.

This 7/-3 is a subnet broadcast address, -1.

In addition, 248/5 is the -1 subnet. So we have the address:
   network=192.168.1  subnet=-1   host=-1
.
This is supposed to be *recognized* as an "all-subnets" broadcast by
hosts
and must be accepted (RFC1122) by all hosts in all subnets of
192.168.1.0/24
network.
But, again, but this is irrelevant to the question of who *receives* the
packet.

Under classless rules, the address
192.168.1.255
is simply host 7 on network prefix 192.168.1.248/29.
Thus, this would simply be a directed broadcast.

The question is what will R1 (and R2) do with the packet?

At least two questions remain for the diagram:
. are the routers configured to forward directed subnet broadcasts?
. do they ignore all-subnets broadcast address

Are we to assume
no ip directed-broadcasts
?
Under 11.3, the default is
ip directed-broadcast
.
OTOH, this only has effect when
ip forward-protocol ...
is set.

Presumably, in the absence of facts (I hate those things -- they always
get
me confused), we would assume the lowest possible configuration, so we
would
*not* assume that any broadcasts being forwarded.
Presumably, also the all-subnets broadcast would also be blocked.

So, I have to answer D.

***However***

Now, more interesting, is what if we ***did*** have
ip forward-protocol ...
and ip directed-broadcast
on all interfaces?

*Now*, what would R1 do with the packet?
Will he see it as a directed broadcast to 192.168.1.252/30 only?
Or will he see it as an all-subnets broadcast and put it on
192.168.1.32/29
as well?

I frankly don't know what the behavior of IOS is vis-a-vis the
all-subnets
broadcast issue.

But, the all-subnets broadcast is deprecated as early as RFC1812.
Seeing it as an all-subnets broadcast would require that the routers be
configured for some kind of deprecated classful behavior.

I would therefore think that a classless (for lack of a better term)
router
with no local 192.168.1.0/24 addresses would simply treat the address
192.168.1.255 as any other routable directed broadcast address.

If so, in our case, R1 & R2 know about 192.168.1.252/30, so the packet
would
be put on that segment (ignoring, for the moment, that the connection
between R1 & R2 looks like a point-to-point serial connection).

Now,
All of the above having been said, I tried this on my own network:
(which consists of 4 segments connected by a 3640 and a few other
segments connected by some 25xx. The segments have several Unix and
windows hosts on them.
   )

pluto ## ping 10.255.255.255 # network's mask (nonVLSM)= 255.255.252.0
PING 10.255.255.255: 64 byte packets
64 bytes from 10.10.120.12: icmp_seq=0. time=4. ms
64 bytes from 10.10.120.1: icmp_seq=0. time=5. ms
64 bytes from 10.10.120.11: icmp_seq=0. time=6. ms
64 bytes from 10.10.120.10: icmp_seq=0. time=7. ms
64 bytes from 10.10.120.12: icmp_seq=1. time=0. ms
64 bytes from 10.10.120.10: icmp_seq=1. time=2. ms
64 bytes from 10.10.120.11: icmp_seq=1. time=3. ms
64 bytes from 10.10.120.1: icmp_seq=1. time=4. ms
64 bytes from 10.10.124.200: icmp_seq=1. time=58. ms

So all the local hosts responded, as expected (answer D).

But then there was this 10.10.124.200 response. I have no idea what
this
box is (I no longer have control over the network).
Either it's one of the 3640's interfaces, o

the 507 exam. Also, if you didn't purchase the Lammle book as "an
actual informative source" then what did you buy it for? Expensive paper
weight I'd say! :)

debug output always in observed order?

2000-08-05 Thread Field, Brian

General question about using the debug command. If I've turned
up debug for a number of different types of events, am I guaranteed
to see these events logged in the order in which they occurr? Is it
possible that the different events don't actually get logged in
the precise order they're observed (assume all events are related to
inbound packets, on one interface, and thus are serialized)

Thanks
Brian

CCNA v2.0 Todd Lammle Book

2000-08-05 Thread Marco Rodrigues

Not be to rude or anything, but this book is very poorly
written. Luckily I have some previous experience and wasn't relying on
this as an actual informative source. There are some many mistakes, that
are not even in the errata.

Can anyone out there recommend another source of information for
the 507 exam? I'm reading all the white papers on certificationzone.com
and they are very well written and informative.

Thanks!

just out of curiousity, does this mean that you have no cisco experience or
is it just that you are seeking the lab experience to pass the related

Fixed it.
PATH crap in NT, not taken in DOS shell.

MRTG Perl help required

2000-08-05 Thread Phil Barker

Hi Gang,

Can anyone help me to fix this Perl code ?
I've installed Perl and MRTG on NT.
I'm attempting "perl mrtg mrtg.cfg" which is producing
the following error : "Cannot find location of MRTG
executable"
I am in the run directory as I should be WHERE MRTG
file IS ???

PS : I already tweaked the code from its default of
Unix to NT so that aint the problem.

Oh ... If you can, please recommend me a good Perl
book or two. I'm fluent in 'C'/'C++'.

Regards,

Phil.

NAT & Snmp Issues

2000-08-05 Thread Steve Nelson

All,

When using NAT on an interface I understand that snmp traps from that
interface is not possible because of the embedded address held within the
data field of the packet, however can I use sub interfaces and have NAT on
one and then run snmp on the other ? I will be using frame relay so I will
just set up another PVC for the second sub interface to allow for managment.

Cheers

Steve

Suppose you found yourself in a situation where you were troubleshooting,
and for whatever reason you had limited means at your disposal. For example,
password recovery is not an option for business reasons. The former network
administrator left the firm in anger, and it turns out he did not document
anything, including passwords. Suppose you are here just to perform a low
level network assessment. Or suppose you are a new hire at a NOC, and you
have only limited access to production routers, but you still want to learn
what you can by observing?

Come on in! See what you can see!
