Hi:

Does anyone know the address for a web site that will walk you though the

Absolutely, especially point number 3 - I would be very surprised if

from those whose servers (e.g. collection stations) it protects is that

I have this theory that you can call yourself and internetworking
engineer when . . . .

1. You have run a debug command on a customer router while

you have caused the CPU to exceed 100% and the router has hung/crashed.

2. You have edited an ACL remotely and reapplied it only to find you

3. In both of the above scenarios you have made up some story for the

the router, claiming that "a reboot may help the performance problem .
. blah . . blah"

4. In each of points 1 & 2 the customer in question is a major account

Well, I really expect some flame for my opinion, but I have some
non-technical comments regarding checkpoint.
OK, let's put it this way, I really don't feel comfortable around
registering checkpoint server and sending them the registered IP address. I
understand this is only meant for copyrighting purposes, but again it still
doesn't make sense to me, they produced the S/W and they have all the IP
addresses of the installed machines?
I might be a bit paranoid here but...
Anyway, I appreciate your opinion on this.

Re: T1, FT1 and Channelized T1

2000-08-08 Thread Oz

T1  = 1.536mbps
Fractional T1 is 128 k minimum increasing in 64 k chunks
Channelized means it can be split up into 24 channels

Some folks use the term fulll T which to me means a fat 1.536 meg pipe
yes I know it listed as 1.544 but thats the gross BW you lose 8k in
housekeeping..
its real name should be a DS-1

i had great link that explained all this i will try and find it for you

2000-08-08 Thread Stevan Pierce

1) If your colleages sent you the config files from the 5505 switch fabric
then it would look similar to the second line "somertarou>(enable)";
however, your colleagues sent you the config off of the supervisor engine.

2) To get the to the switch fabric, get the address of the fabric and telnet
to that.

Besides, I think ForeFront (now SmartCertify) sales guys are TOO PUSHY AND
PERSISTENT - they kept calling me repeatedly inspite of the fact that I got
really annoyed with them and clearly asked
them never to call me again and that I'm NOT interested at all in their
product any more.

I write this to the group so that everyone thinks twice before leaving their
name/address/phone number/e-mail on their web site before downloading the
demos - earlier today I was woken up by the same over-zealous sales guy from
Forefront and it wasn't the first time grrr ("Oh, I was
wondering if you're still interested in the CCNA CBT NO, I'M NOT -
REPEAT - NOT INTERESTED IN THE DAMN CCNA CBT FROM YOUR COMPANY.. NOW WHAT
PART OF THAT DON'T YOU UNDERSTAND ???")

The sales tactics used : The list price of the CCNA CBT is $1800, but
they'll give you all kinds of discounts (bring the price down to about $1200
or so), and if you express your inability to buy an expensive CBT product
(which isn't worth the money, imho, going by the demo I downloaded), they
will try to sell you all kinds of installment plans to sell you the CBT,
throw in freebies (buy CCNA 1.0 now and we'll throw in CCNA 2.0/ICND for
free)... anything to make you buy!

I have to agree here. My company purchased the ForeFront CCNA CBT last year
for my training. The cost was $1800 (US), which also included ACRC. While
not bad for an overview, there were gaps left open in the end. What I did
find useful was the visualization that the CBT provided. I used the books
to get the complete coverage of the material and then the CBT for
visualization of some of the more complex topics. All in all, however, I
don't think I would waste that much money again for CBTs. I passed my next
3 CCNP tests with only books and resources from the web (well, this group
too, of course!) and found this method, while somewhat lengthier, to be more
complete. If time is critical, take the class and get it over with. You'll
get class materials to continue your studies as well as an instructor to
answer questions all day long (hopefully).
Good luck!

I've been battling it out with a local company here in San Diego to begin
night classes geared towards CCNP. But thus far they're sticking to their
day only schedule. They've instituted that e-learning program but still, if
you can't get the time off to go to their site, you also can't get the time
to sit at work and do it.
This leads me to ask if anyone knows about good CBT training that covers the
tests for CCNP?

2000-08-08 Thread keith wood

Stephen,

I placed my CV on www.dice.com and landed a job in NYC inside 1 month. Not
bad... I didn't take it as the Yanks dont get enough holidays and the visa
was way too restrictive for a family guy (wife not able to work over there
etc). The money was in the $100K range though (apparently thats pretty
average for networking guys in NYC). I believe www.monster.com is not a bad
recruitment site either.

I currently contract through S.Com (www.scom.com) they are pretty good and
have offices in the states (and worldwide) - why dont you give them a go?

Good luck.

2000-08-08 Thread Joe

1st Question - If I were to have a router here and a router in someone elses
house (dual ethernet of course) and added ip helper address to each of them
pointing to the other, would he see all my broadcasts... ie netbeui ... ie
see each other in our net neighborhoods?

2nd Question .. (the OT part) - can anyone point me in a direction on
finding some comprehensive "how to's" for setting up a VPN between
(NON-CISCO) my machine using a cable modem and a friends machine using a DSL
modem... also, if it were done, would we see each other in our net
neighborhoods and be able to map each others drives?

thanks for any help in this...

out that Cisco Press has come out with two books which go as under:

1.ICND(exam No :- 640-507).
2.CCNA 20 Exam Preparation guide.

I am a little confused as to what book am I supposed to buy.
Please suggest which is a better book to buy out of these two.

If not these books are there any other books that are available in the
Market that satisfy the CCNA 20 Routing & Switching Objectives.

Regards,

Rajagopal Iyengar.

ANthese routers would be connected how? Through WTWW (Window to Window
Wiring)? 2 soup cans and some string? Thin Air?

The point is, there could be any number of things in the "atmosphere" that
would effectively filter out your broadcast crap (and his too...) before it
got to its destination. With the limited info you have provided, it is not
very easy to tell...

What problem are you trying to solve by load balancing? Equalizing
load on the HQ routers? Reconvergence after failures? Equalization
of the load on the T1s?

Is bandwidth optimization more important than increases in
out-of-sequence packets? Is traffic equal among the sites?

RE: "You can call yourself and internetworking engineer when . . . ."

2000-08-08 Thread HILVING, JAMES (SBIS)

I have to say that I was surprised when I found a show command that will
crash a router in the first releases of 12.0.
The first time I played in a customers 8500 Series running 12.0 I did a
bunch if show commands until I found out Cisco added "show diag ? ". I
decided it would be interesting to try every option possible behind it and
see what was shown. Then, the router completely quit responding. Of course
this happened around 2 AM 800 miles away from my building. So I contacted
the customer to go in and reboot the box. The customer said that all the
lights on the entire chassis were bright red. After the reboot the box
recovered saying possible write erase preformed and of course went right to
the setup dialog. The config was not in the router anyway and the customer
failed to back it up. So of course I spent the next three hours helping the
customer figure out how to restore the configuration by tracing cable and
looking at IP addresses assigned on each machine.

Now I can't tell my new employees that show commands will never cause a
problem...But if it does you blame it on that Cisco IOS.

(tongue firmly in cheek)

I have this theory that you can call yourself and internetworking
engineer when . . . .

1. You have run a debug command on a customer router while
investigating a performance problem, or perhaps a security issue, and
you have caused the CPU to exceed 100% and the router has hung/crashed.

2. You have edited an ACL remotely and reapplied it only to find you
have blocked all traffic including telnet from your desk and you are
now locked out.

3. In both of the above scenarios you have made up some story for the
Help Desk/1st Line Support and asked them to get the customer to reboot
the router, claiming that "a reboot may help the performance problem .
. blah . . blah"

4. In each of points 1 & 2 the customer in question is a major account
that has threatened legal action against your company for failing to
maintain SLAs, or to close the account altogether.

Does this sound familiar to anyone? Have you every felt that cold
feeling in the pit of your stomach when you entered a command and the
screen froze? Did you blame hardware/software/customer/gremlins i.e.
anybody and anything but not yourself?

;-)

I believe that is a mistake in Todd's book. You can only have one default

Otherwise the packet would not know where to send the packet.

The problems I am trying to solve are reconvergence after failures in HQ and equalization of the load on the T1s.

The traffic is pretty equal among the remote sites.

What problem are you trying to solve by load balancing?  Equalizing
load on the HQ routers? Reconvergence after failures?  Equalization
of the load on the T1s?

Is bandwidth optimization more important than increases in
out-of-sequence packets? Is traffic equal among the sites?

In Todd Lammle's book for CCNA 640-407, on p. 202 he has set a default route
of BOTH 172.16.40.2 and 172.16.20.1. How does one do this, just enter the
IP route command as such, one right after the other (??):

ip route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 162.16.40.2
ip route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 162.16.20.1

???

The reason I ask is that in his book for CCNA 640-507, he states on page
253, "Default routing is used to send packets with a remote destination
network not in the routing table to the next hop router. You can only use
default routing on stub networks, which means that they have only one exit
port out of the network."

The two books seem to say contradictory things. Is it because the 507 exam
is based on a different IOS? What gives?

Router to DSL line compatibility

2000-08-08 Thread Frank Wells

Hey folks,
Has anyone used a dual ethernet router to connect their home LAN's to a DSL
to ISP line? I was wondering if I could get by without having to buy a DSL
router of sorts. Does a 25xx or 26xx dual ethernet router even have the
ability to route DSL?

If I do need to get a DSL router, which model would you recommend based on
the premise I would like to be able to play with some NAT configs and some
VPDN kind of stuff too.

I am currently using a Alcatel DSL box and static IP from the ISP.

Thanks a lot.

Question about BSCN

2000-08-08 Thread J. Scott Branscum

I passed CCNA 1.0 late July. Now moving on to CCNP 2.0. I have CCNP Preparation
Library for CCNP 1.0 + BCMSN. I'm thinking of moving on to ACRC and CLSC since BSCN
is not out yet. Or should I just go on to BCMSN? Are Boson tests the best practice
software to use for CCNP 2.0? Is ACRC and CLSC Exam Guide useful? If not, what do I
use in place of these?
I know that ACRC has a companion ACRC Exam Guide, but what is the main text for CLSC
Exam Guide?

I use mostly Cisco Press books for study.

Not able to pay high costs of classes, so self study is the only way I can go.

Re: IP classless/Default routes

2000-08-08 Thread Adam Hickey

No, there is nothing incongruous here. You add the static route for the
default route which tells the router that "if you don't know where the
destination is, just shove it out over here". Lammle has to use the two
static route commands because router B is in the middle of two networks. So
when router B doesn't know of the destination it has to shove the packet out
two sides so that each of the other networks can take a look at it and
decide what to do with it.

It is this kind of confusion that leads to the use of synamic protocols
rather than static routes.

2000-08-08 Thread McMasters, Eric

That also falls in-line with when we wanted to see what "debug all" would do
on the core router. After about a minute of continuous logging messages it
just stopped working. Again we had to reboot the router and we were somehow
able to blame it on the server guys! "Sir, the NT servers were generating
excessive broadcasts which filled the routers buffers and forced it to shut
down. You know Sir you really should talk to those server guys about
configuring their equipment right." Ah the good ole' days, huh Mike!!!

Too funny. I can think of one incident about 4 years back when I was in the
military and we didn't know anything about configuring cisco equipment. A
friend of mine who lurks on this list like me (you know who you are Eric)
and myself were trying to play a prank on a fellow co-worker and block
traffic on his computer. We thought of an ACL to block his IP address but
he was smart enough to change it if we did that. So we settled on creating
a filter by mac address. The problem was we couldn't apply it to the
interface so after a little reading we figured the interface needed to be in
a bridge group to apply this ACL. Now, this interface was serving our
entire building which was the Communications Squadron for the base.
Needless to say when when everyone in the building started yelling we
rebooted it and blamed it on a software crash on the router (hey these
things happen:)...

Did you blame hardware/software/customer/gremlins i.e.
anybody and anything but not yourself?

;-)

It sounds like you're trying to assign IP addresses from the same subnet to
two different interfaces, which you can't do. By definition, each interface
on a router needs to be in a different subnet.

I wouldn't call it load-balancing so much as it's load-sharing. On routers
where you have multiple interfaces for VLANs configured, you can make one
router the primary for certain interfaces/VLANs and the second router the

Yes, you can get any Cisco router with dual ethernet.

I have Alcatel 1000 DSL modem (output ethernet) connected to Eth0 (Cisco
3202) and NAT thru Eth1. This case if you have only one IP from ISP and your
private LAN. It work great for me.

Good Luck.

Re: Strange one (for me at least)

2000-08-08 Thread Minh Vu

You need to assign two different subnet on your router.
i.e IP Ethernet 0 : 10.0.0.1
IP Serial 0 : 20.0.0.2

You can not set same subnet on the router because function of router is
route from one subnet to another subnet.

Good Luck !

RE: Strange one (for me at least)

2000-08-08 Thread Aaron K. Dixon

You can't put an Ethernet and Serial interface in the same subnet. If you
needed to be in the same subnet you would do bridging between the
interfaces. I don't know what mask you were trying to use, but even if you
used a /30 this would work. Your network address would be 0, hosts 1 and 2,
broadcast of 3.

Greetings,

I've have a 2500 router, I was giving the Ethernet interface ip
xxx.xxx.xxx.1, and the serial interface xxx.xxx.xxx.2. The router came back
with an error message the ip addresses are overlapping. Any idea why this
happens and can I force the router to accept it.

Thank you,

Need recomendation

2000-08-08 Thread Patrick Stiever

Ladies and Gentleman,

I need another recommendation, I have about a dozen or so routers,
LocalDirectors, and Switches here at our HQ, I would like to buy something
like a 2509 router so I can hook them up from their console port to the
2509's async port. That way I don't have to run back to the NOC with
laptop, cable, and try to console in. Basically, I need a info on what
piece of equipment would be best suited for this application. Thanks again.

YOu should be able to if everyone is following IPSec standards. The only

If so do you have a sample config?

In Todd Lammle's book for CCNA 640-407, on p. 202 he has set a default
route
of BOTH 172.16.40.2 and 172.16.20.1.

What gives?

What is your subnetting plan? The answer to the problem lies in subnetting.

Why do you want to force the router to accept it?

PBX - to handle circuit switched voice and/or data traffic.

Channelized means that the T1's [or FT1's] bandwidth is TDM'd [Time Division
Multiplexed] into discrete 64k chunks. [even if there's only 56k available to handle
voice/data traffic - there's still 64k chunks].

The discrete chunks lend themselves very well to synchronized switching and
cross-connection - as in a PBX or any telephone switch.

An unchannelized T1 is just a data pipe Nx64k wide. It's generally what would be at
the router side of a CSU/DSU - more suitable for packet switched applications.

This is - in a way - an oversimplification of this stuff, but I hope it's helping

Did you blame hardware/software/customer/gremlins i.e.
anybody and anything but not yourself?

;-)

Boson tests the best practice software to use for CCNP 2.0? Is ACRC and
CLSC Exam Guide useful? If not, what do I use in place of these?
I know that ACRC has a companion ACRC Exam Guide, but what is the main text
for CLSC Exam Guide?

I use mostly Cisco Press books for study.

Not able to pay high costs of classes, so self study is the only way I can

Re: Need recomendation

2000-08-08 Thread Kenneth

why not just get a Console Management Switch? It's much cheaper than buying
a router to manage other routers.

Here's a pretty good brand: WTI, their website is at www.wti.com

The cheapest one I think is a 4 port cosole that costs around $90.00 at CDW.

these boxes have a 10BaseT interface so you can telnet to it (it supports
it) and control the routers connected to its console.

Way cheaper this way... hope this helps.

Patrick,
I would recommend a 2511RJ. This way you can just use the correct
console cable. The octal cables are rollovers, but if you have a
catalyst that needs a straight-thru you will then need to daisy-chain
another rollover.

Need opinions on Netcracker

2000-08-08 Thread Chance, Larry

Hello everyone,

I'm evaluating a network design program called,
Netcracker Professional (unusual name, huh!)
 http://www.avdinc.com
Are there any folks on this list-server that's used it
and can share your thoughts on how you like it?

I've used it to discover my network and it has
a neat map with all my routers and switches.
It's supposed to allow various 'what-if' type of
changes. I only have seven days to eval
it so I gotta hurry.

Also, BSCN class is available for my area in October.
Is that a good start for CCNP 2.0? I just passed CCNA.

Cheers,

Larry

Re: Strange one (for me at least)

2000-08-08 Thread Dale Holmes

Are you saying that the xxx octets are the same (i.e. A.B.C.1 and A.B.C.2)?

If so, then you are trying to tell the router that its Ethernet interface
and its Serial interface are connected to the same network, which is almost
certianly not the case... Why would you want to do such a thing?

Since Howard didn't say it, I will:

What is the problem that you are trying to solve by forcing the router to
believe that these interfaces are on the same network?

I believe that the built-in CSU/DSU on the 1602's will only support 56k. If
you have a 64k circuit, you will need to buy a serial interface card and an
external 64k CSU/DSU. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Re: (Off-Topic) Openview vs Sniffer

2000-08-08 Thread Shawn T. Carroll

It would help to tell us more about what you're monitoring and in what
detail.

With a lot of nodes on your network often the only thing you need to know
at the highest level is "is it up". If it's not, you can drill into where
it's not working telnet here and there, etc. or use the monitoring ap that
came with your device.

How big is your network? Now many nodes, how many different things
running over the wires? i.e. IPX, SNA, or just IP? How many different
applications?

Sniffers on your network (at strategic points) will allow you to
monitor/troubleshoot to an almost infinitely small level of detail, but
you need two things to go along with it: 1. the skill and experience to
use it, and 2. the money to buy the agents and console software.

IP classless/Default routes

Let me clear this up a little, you can place more than one default route in
the routing table but the router will only use the first entry.
If that link goes down the next default route will be used.
Here is the config,

As Stefano gave in his reply we can imagine that it is in slot 4. Then enter
"session 4". You will verify the slot as given above. That will get you to
the 5505# prompt. It may require passwords just as a router will.
The router module may be a daughter card on the Supervisor engine. I believe
that it is called a Router Switch Feature Card (RSFC). Then enter "session
15".

CCIE Written Passed

2000-08-08 Thread therussells

Well, I finally passed with a 72%. Not great but it was above the 70 required.

I will soon post my study materials and other related information on my website
www.thetestpage.net

This is diffinetly possible for anyone. 1 year ago I'd never touched a router. So
don't give up.

Remember that a great deal of the questions are trick questions.

Have fun

Thank you,

Think of them as a 2501 with a built in hub. The 2505 has 8 ethernet RJ-45
ports. The 2507 has 16.

I need to practice urgently BGP, OSPF, EIGRP, etc. using Hutnik's... until I

Please let me know who are the nice people who I was told that allow folks

"NEW "CCIE certification requirement

2000-08-08 Thread kien theng lee

Hi, guys
i have found this from the web (posted by someone named hsb)

The new qualifications for CCIE have been announced. I have a copy of some
practice questions. They are as follows:

1. Describe the history of the papacy from its origin to the present day,
concentrating especially, but not exclusively, on its social, political,
economic, religious, and philosophical impact on Europe, Asia, America, and
Africa. Be brief, concise, and specific.

2. You have been provided with a razor blade, a piece of gauze, and a bottle
of Jack Daniels. Remove your appendix. Do not suture until your work has
been inspected. You have 10 minutes.

3. 2500 riot-crazed aborigines are storming the room. Calm them. You may use
any ancient language except Latin or Greek.

4. Create life. Estimate the differences in subsequent human culture if this
form of life had developed 500 million years earlier, with special attention
to its probable effect on the English Parliamentary System. Prove your
thesis.

5. Write a piano concerto. Orchestrate and perform it with flute and drum.
You will find a piano under your chair.

6. Based on your knowledge of their works, evaluate the emotional stability,
degree of adjustment, and repressed frustrations of each of the following:

a. Alexander of Aphrodisias
b. Ramses II
c. Gregory of Nicea
d. Iammurati

Support your evaluation with quotations from each man's work, making
appropriate references. It is not necessary to translate.

7. Estimate the sociological problems which might accompany the end of the
world. Construct an experiment to test your theory.

8. Define management. Define Science. How do they relate? Why? Create a
generalized algorithm to optimize all managerial decisions. Assuming an IBM
3270 with 257 Radio Shack and Panasonic terminals and each terminal to
activate your algorithm. Design the communications interface and all the
necessary control programs.

9. The disassembled parts of a high-powered rifle have been placed in a box
on your desk. You will also find an instruction manual printed in Swahili.
In 5 minutes, a hungry Bengal tiger will be admitted to the room. Take
whatever action you feel appropriate. Be prepared to justify your decision.

10. There is a red telephone on the desk beside you. Start WWIII. Report at
length on its socio-political effects, if any.

11. Take a position for or against truth. Prove the validity of your
position.

12. Explain the nature of matter. Include in your answer an evaluation of
the impact of the development of mathematics on science.

13. Sketch the development of human thought. Estimate its significance.
Compare this with the development of any other kind of thought.

Extra Credit:

Define the universe. Give three examples.

What is your subnetting plan? The answer to the problem lies in subnetting.

Why do you want to force the router to accept it?

General question about using the debug command. If I've turned
up debug for a number of different types of events, am I guaranteed
to see these events logged in the order in which they occurr? Is it
possible that the different events don't actually get logged in
the precise order they're observed (assume all events are related to
inbound packets, on one interface, and thus are serialized)

Voice over ATM??

2000-08-08 Thread Niraj Palikhey

Hi,
Could somebody advise me the value of working in a voice over atm
environment?

I am on my way to achive the CCIE certification(well, that's my ultimate
certification goal). Presently, I am working towards my CCNP and have learnt
a lot about Cisco routers and routing in general.

I have an opportunity to work in a voice over atm environment. This is
dealing with Nortel GSP switches connected to Passport switches which is
connected to Lucent CBX 500 ATM switches. Will be part of the team that will
build this ATM core backbone. They also have plans to route data(ip) over
this ATM backbone possibly in the future.

Since I will not really be dealing with Cisco routers but more so with those
ATM switches and voice switches etc. is it worth it to work in this kind of
environment, keeping in mind the CCIE certification?

The pay is ok and I do understand any kind of ATM knowledge is good, but I
have yet to pass my CCNP and work with routers in a larger scale and
understand them better??

Would someone give me an honest advise?

Thank you.

Kind regards,

RE: Need recomendation

2000-08-08 Thread David Jones

I did this same thing but much cheaper. I had a Xyplex terminal server.
Configured each port as needed and cabled to the various console ports.
Built a menu so I could telnet or dial into the terminal server and choose
which device I wanted to connect to. Worked great. You can do the same
thing with an Equinox terminal server, just another brand name.

Network Drawing Program

2000-08-08 Thread Evan You

Hi all,

I am in the process of looking for a program that will draw a network based
on a database information. Basically, I have thousands of circuits mostly
leased lines and FR that I need to draw to do analysis work. I am looking to
diversify as much of the network as possible so there is not a single point
of failure in the network. Currently, we are using a database system that
has all the circuit information but it's very cumbersome to analyze.

If I am able to see the circuits drawn automatically on demand it would be a
lot easier. For example, if I wanted to see all circuits that went into a
specific sets of common equipment (router, ATM switch, FRADS, MUXES, DXCs)
then I could easily see the single points of failure in a network.

I've looked into Granite Systems but they are too expensive and there is a
limitation on the total numbers of circuits can be drawn at once.

If anyone knows of any other application, I would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Evan You - CCNA

RE: Strange one (for me at least)

2000-08-08 Thread Daniel Cotts

Is this a lab or production scenario?
I'll answer as if it's a lab.
I assume that your "xxx" means that the digits are the same for both
interfaces. For example Ethernet is 10.10.10.1 and Serial is 10.10.10.2.
Assume subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 . In that case the router thinks that
they are on the same subnet and thus cannot route between them. Try
10.10.11.2 for the serial. It should work.

No, you can't force it. You can use different subnet masks to create subnets
that are close numerically. Watch ip subnet zero.
Maybe for Ethernet 10.10.10.17 with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.240.
Connected PCs would have a default gateway of 10.10.10.16. Serial line could
be 10.10.10.33 with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.240 .

RE: Voice over ATM??

2000-08-08 Thread Daniel Cotts

Which is more important Certification or Career? Nortel and Lucent make good
boxes - especially the Ascend ATM switches that Lucent bought. You have an
opportunity to work on a great network buildout. Do it. Your primary skills
may be with those vendor's equipment.
Now with that skill set learn Cisco and make them interoperate. That would
be an enviable position!! Good luck.

Re: CBT Training Options

Hmm, I like this one, may be able to get a couple of routers sooner
afterall...

A quick question: I already had purchased sybex CCNA 1.0, so I opted not to
buy the 2.0 version. In addition to that, I ordered the ICND cisco press
book.
Do you think the ICND would makeup for what's lacking in the sybex 1.0 CCNA
edition?
Thanks Adedapo...

RE: IP classless/Default routes

2000-08-08 Thread Cohen, Michael

Actually, I believe this is incorrect. If you enter two static default
routes with the same administrative distance (in this case 1) then
(depending on any configured maximum paths statement, I believe the default
is 4) the router will load balance using both addresses. If the router will
load balance on per-packet or per-destination basis will depend on the
switching method used. The reason one of your default routes dissapear when
you disconnect one of your ethernet segments is that the route to your next
hop address for that default route dissapears. If a router does not have a
route to the next hop address then it will not install that route into the
route table even though it is statically configured. To test this scenario
using your previous example try adding a static route to 10.1.1.0
255.255.255.0 with a next hop address of 10.1.2.3. When both ethernet
interfaces are up you won't see that new static route for 10.1.1.3 in the
table because the administrative distance for that route is 1. The router
as a connected route with an administrative distance of 0 out it's ethernet
interface for that network. As soon as you remove the cable from the
ethernet interface with 10.1.1.1 connected to it (e0/0) the static route for
10.1.1.0 255.255.255.0 with next hop 10.1.2.3 will show up. At the same
time both default statics will remain in the routing table and be used in a
load sharing state.

Let me clear this up a little, you can place more than one default route in
the routing table but the router will only use the first entry.
If that link goes down the next default route will be used.
Here is the config,

 ip address 10.1.1.1 255.255.255.0
 no ip directed-broadcast

What gives?

RE: VPN 3DES ON 2MB Link with 25XX

2000-08-08 Thread Chris Larson

I would look and see if the Crypto card is available for the router yet.
Cisco had a PL2 card for the CET and Private Link technology and they were
working on (last time I checked) a card that would take the encryption and
decryption off the router processor and onto the Card. Again, I am not sure
if it is availbale. I though they were going to call it the PL3 which makes
it sound like it is for the Private Link CET technology, but the person I
spoke with said it was going to work for DES/3DES etc.

Have fiannly gotten around to printing out the IPSec Design Guide published
on the Cisco site.

http://www.cisco.com/cpropart/sync-src/ccstcp/cc/techno/protocol/ipsecur/ips
ec/tech/
watch the word wrap
need a CCO login to get there

rather interesting publication, with 15 pages on IPSec, 27 pages on design
considertions, and over 370 pages of case studies/configurations!

the relevant protion to this conversation is the design guide, which does
talk about performance, memory usage, and processor impact. The information
presented is not a complete as I would hope, but it is indicative.

for example, using a 16xx router, and a 125K clockrate on a back to back
serial link, a file transfer that took 10 minutes with no encryption took
only 18 seconds longer using IPSec. CPU usage was at 29% on average during
the tests. ( The publication states that "the same test was run several
times and the times were averaged together")

Although there are several charts measuring bandwidth % used with different
size packets on several router platforms, I am disappointed to find that
this presentation is not particularly detailed, nor particularly rigorous.

One chart compares performnce in megabits per second of several routers, one
of which is a 2514 ( no 2501's ). Said router without encryption perfermed
in the range of 2.4-9.9 mbs, and with AH and ESP enabled dropped to 01.-0.2
mbs. there is a column labeled "suggested bandwidth" but no explaination in
the text. There is a rather interesting line stating that "the suggested
bandwidth is reduced from the maximum possible to bring the CPU utilization
more within accepted limits"

the same table states that a 7505 popping AH and ESP was filling a 6 mbs
serial link with a 70-75% CPU usage rate.

All this leads me to infer that the chances are very good that doing what
you are planning to do will be bad for the router. IPSec checws up processor
cycles. With a T-1 to fill, your poor CPU's are going to burn along at 100%
utilization to fiull that bandwidth. Not good for router!

Given these kinds of numbers, you may find your remote users complaining a
lot about "slow performance" and with good reason. your 2 meg pipe becomes a
100K pipe, assuming the router doesn't shut down a lot due to overload.

Anyone got some other good reads on IPSec and router resource utilization?

Chuck
