RE: Sniffer Pro 3.5
Got a question for ya Will. Have you ever had to diagnose network performance or response time problems??? How about poor application performance on your network??? If so, what tools do you use??? I personally believe that any questions regarding the use of Network Associates Sniffer products are valid in this or any study group pertaining to network theory, design or certifications. Sniffer products are some of the most widely used and trusted network troubleshooting tools available today. Just ask any experienced Network/Systems Engineer. All Cisco SE types that I work with have used these tools quite frequently. I would strongly suggest taking a moment to think about how a study group members question relates to networking in general before you flame them in the future. Remember, network theory and troubleshooting are a BIG part of most Cisco Certification exams... Of course, this is just my personal opinion and does not reflect the opinion of Cisco Systems, Inc. I would guess that I'm not alone in my opinion however. Please feel free to e-mail or call if you have any questions... Thanks for your valuable time... Re: firewall help needed, urgent
For the LinkSys, are you using the latest firmware? The latest version is 1.36 The delivered version didn't support ipsec passthrough and other stuff but now it does. Goto http://www.linksys.com - firmware upgrade is right on the home page. I didn't personally test this unit but my group did and they had problems with vpn also. However they found that the mtu had been changed from other experiments in lab. Once they put the mtu back to 1500 and got the latest firmware, they reported that the Linksys worked fine. The only problem I know of now with the Linksys is that my group reports that X-windows clients aren't working through it, everything else does though I use one at home but I haven't tried anything more fancy than normal email and surfing. Re: Passed CCNP - Need info on study resources for CCDP
Sundar, I began studies for CCDP (yes, you need both CCDA and CID) after completion of CCNP. I just passed the CCDA exam and recommend Top Down Network Design and Boson. I didn't find the exam particularly difficult from a technical perspective. TDND will give you all of the non-technical information as well as a refresher on some of the basics. Boson will help you get a "feel" for how the DCN test will be formatted. I believe that completing everything possible before attempting the CCIE written will only be helpful. Design may not be specifically added to the R/S test, but we should know something about this area sooner or later. That's a real-world perspective. Helena, The general rule is, any material in the BSCN course is testable. Personally I wouldn't expect much on Not So Stubby but defintely would expect at least one question Stub and/or Totally Stubby. There is a large amount of material covered in BSCN, "Not So Stubby" is only a small part of it. That's my 2 cents. Passed CIT, failed Founation exam.
Saturday I took both the Foundation exam and CIT exams. The CIT was moderately difficult with lots of questions on CCO, Catalyst 5000, and AppleTalk. Scored 759 out of 692 required. Failed the Foundation exam, (combination of Remote Access, Routing, & Switching exams). Each section is scored seperately but no where could I find the minimum score required to pass each section of the Foundation exam. My score where as follows: Routing720Pass Switching702Fail Remote Access 728Pass Does anyone know where to get info on the cut off scores? I thought the cut off was 700, I guess not. I plan on re-studying Wednesday and Thursday nights then retake the Fondation on Friday. The ironic thing is I took the Foundation Thursday, Passed Switching & Remote Access, but failed Routing. I boned up on Routing and Switching then my Switching score dropped. I am bound and determined to pass this exam Friday! Traffic Director problem
Hi All, I posted this few days ago. Anyone out there to share any idea about my problem? == I am running Traffic Director version 5.7 on a Windows NT server 4.0 SP4 to monitor rmon stats in catalyst switches (46 of them). I have two problems: 1) When I tried to install shared property file in one on the Catalyst 5000 switch I got the following message: -- Install aborted: Creating alarm for agent 3/23, Domain: RMON, Var: 1.3.6.1.2.1.16.1.1.1.8. Entry or Group not present in Agent: NTSC-5000. -- The line card in module 3 is WSX5224 (24 port 10/100 Autosense). NTSC-5000 is the switch name. The switch is running 4.5(4) (that is the standard for the organisation) and has Supervisor module II (WSX5506 - 100BaseFx, MMF). RMON is enabled in the switch and CDP is enable in each port. Obviously, no data is logged. I have another 20 Catalyst 5000 switches and none of them are giving this problem. The only difference in this switch is it has a WSX5012 (48 port 10 Half) line card. 2) When I add a Catalyst 5509 switch as an switch agent, I don't see any ports even though the test passes. Clicking on Learn does no avail. I have 3 other Cat 5509 without any problem. The switch is running 4.5(4), Supervisor module II (WSX5509 - 100BaseTx, MII), RMON and CDP enabled. Line cards are 7 WSX5225r (24 port 10/100 Auto ISL enabled). I appreciate any suggestion/comments/solution. So much "sniffing" suddenly ? Why ? what is the intention ?
A lot of posts are coming up on sniffing. Just curious, if these folks could also pour out their intentions with the sniffing tool, perhaps the wiser/learned/experienced/academecians may be able to give direction to their thought. Sniffer can be used to test Layer 1 - Layer 7. I use it a lot for Layer 2 , Layer 4 only. I couldnt care what layer 3 is doing becoz I " health check" with layer 4. The best Sniffing tool on this earth today is from RADCOM. Man cant afford it even if man had money. In the country with largest population called India , we have only 1 of that tool. RADCOM today has only 70 employees the world over. The free sniffing tool also sniffs enough to let a network admin troubleshoot most of the network issues and plan on fine tuning. RE: 53-byte ATM cell (laymans terms)
(Here's that post I've tried to send a couple times...) If you are asking for a reason, I may be able to break it down to a basic. One of the reasons ATM uses a fixed cell size (53-bytes) is to make it a little faster. Lets look at it through the OSI model. When data travels down through the OSI there may be various size differences in different technologies (ether, token, FDDI). This of coarse produces thinking on the OSI's part as it flows down the layers. We all know thinking takes up some time. Well, with ATM and the fixed size, the lower layers know what is gonna come out every time so they don't have to rethink their strategies every time a different packet is sent through because they always know how big it will be (53-bytes). The less the thinking, the faster it can pass the info onto the line. I know this is very weak but this is how I was taught it and I think it helps to explain in Layman's terms. Think of it like this. If UPS didn't have to weigh their packages every time they sent it out in the trucks, just imagine how much faster it would get on the road. Hope I helped...I think I just helped myself remember. ;) Mark Zabludovsky ~ CCNA, CCDA, 1/4-NP [EMAIL PROTECTED] "If you need luck, apparently you're not prepared...Go study!" ~Mark Zabludovsky~ _ FAQ, list archives, and subscription info: http://www.groupstudy.com/list/cisco.html Report misconduct and Nondisclosure violations to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

You probably have offended the List Gods. This list employs a system of filters that looks at every word in your post. In any one word is in there (doesn't matter under what context), it's out of here! Unfortunately, the list of banned words is not available for public consumption. I also understand the frustration of spending time making a real good post and it goes into the bit bucket somewhere. In the end it's the list's lost not yours. Re: IPX
If you simply wish to filter out all updates *except* the Netware file servers you can use an output sap filter on the wan interface of *each* router. (I am assuming that you have IOS feature sets on your routers which support IPX.) For example: Router A ipx routing access-list 1001 permit -1 4 access-list 1001 deny -1 <-- not necessary due to implicit deny but I prefer to have it in there for readability interface s 0 ipx network AC ipx output-sap-filter 1001 interface e 0 ipx network A - After you implement the output sap filter, wait 60 seconds and do a show ipx servers. The non-server entries for the remote sites should go away. Check out the link below for more information. http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/701/34.html As for implementing IPX EIGRP, this would depend on the speed of your WAN links and the amount of required (i.e. servers) SAP traffic. Using IPX/RIP, it takes 480 bytes every 60 seconds to advertise 7 SAP services. If you have fast links and a small amount of required SAP traffic then implementing IPX EIGRP might be unnecessary. If on the other hand you have lots of required SAP traffic I would definitely implement IPX EIGRP. If you do setup it up, don't forget to disable IPX/RIP for the WAN interfaces. For example: Router A --- ipx routing int e 0 ipx network A int s 0 ipx network AC ipx router eigrp 100 network AC network A ipx router rip no network AC -- Hope this helps, Sandy Turnage SH Wesson wrote: > In regards to ipx routing, how and when do we determine if running ipx > routing is enough as compare to when to run ipx eigrp routing? Cert Totals
Hi I spotted this on the alt.certification.cisco list this AM and thought I would forward it here since the question has been asked s many times. In a follow up post asking where he got these figures, his reply was from his network academy instructor. Final review of BSCN Thomas II book
Rating: 4 on a scale of 1-10 If you haven't gone through the archives to see my first few comments then I will recapitulate. What I did not like: 1) Too many errors (typo, figures, wrong answers,) 2) No flow and standard in the writing. Example: If there is a command review at the end of a chapter, the reader (me anyway) expect that there will be command reviews in the following chapters 3) Lack of explanation and information in all the tables and diagrams 4) Very confusing presentation of the commands. No flow again and no order 5) Intros only to OSPF, BGP and EIGRP. Not enough info and not very well ordered. 6) Lacks: RIP, RIPv2 ,IS-IS (at least basic stuff) What I liked: 1) Fairly good review of the Ip addressing scheme; Classes, Sub/supernetting, CIDR, IP Unumbered, Classless Classful, VLSM etc... tricks stuff for beginners (chapt 4) 2) Very good intros to OSPF, BGP, EIGRP and good definition of terms 3) Very good description of the output of different SHOW commands, OSPF especially Overall this book lacks depth and I do not feel that this book will help you with your BSCN exam very much, unless you are looking for an intro to routing protocol and you want to add a book to your library. I wouldn't recommend this book for anything else. Not worth $101.95 cdn I am not recommending this book for the BSCN but rather a few other books. A MUST is Mr Doyle's ROUTING TCP/IP which covers OSPF, RIP, RIPv2, EIGRP and IS-IS. There is a second edition of INTERNET ROUTING ARCHITECTURE by Mr Halabi, which covers BGP inside and out. With those two books (which you will need anyway for your CCIE library) you will be able to understand about routing protocols. Just a man's point of view ! Any comment are welcome! Re: Data Link / Windowing
I`m going to attempt to answer your question..bare with me first the windowing mechanism i take it you mean the LLC sublayer? ..i have heard of analogys that in the LLC layer that the SSAP`s and DSAP`s (source and destination acess points) are like windows or hooks into the higher levels ...but i have never heard of the windowing mechanism. also any retranmission/sequence errors within the TCP/IP stack is done by 1 the physical layerCSMA/CD or 2 the transport layer...flow control Do you mean the FCS/CRC ...as this ius a checksum that is checked at each level of encap It sound to me that your describing CSMA/CD but i`m not sure if you mean the FCS/CRC (frame check sequence/Checksum) then the answer is at all 7 "layers" if you mean windowing and sequence checking that happens at the transport layer. i am confused by yuor question as i have never heard of it...but please (and list) tell me if i am totally misunderstanding the question... sorry if it`s wrong steve >From: "Billy Monroe" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> >Reply-To: "Billy Monroe" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> >To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] >Subject: Data Link / Windowing >Date: Fri, 20 Oct 2000 08:41:48 -0700 > >Regarding the windowing mechanism, a Data Link layer feature: > >Three types of retransmissions may occur to correct sequence errors: > >Go Back to N, Selective Repeat and Stop and Wait. > >Do you know in which circumstances the method above will be applied ? > > >Thanks, > >Billy > > >_ >FAQ, list archives, and subscription info: >http://www.groupstudy.com/list/cisco.html >Report misconduct and Nondisclosure violations to [EMAIL PROTECTED] _ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. Reply to your challenge MIKE KINLEY :here's a challange....
Mike Kinley This is not challenging enough :-) See, since you are handling a hospital traffic AND since you want to ROUTE ALL HTTP from clients, the best thing for you to do is to install a WEB-REDIRECTOR . The best in the market today is from www.alteonwebsystems.com Here is a return chalenge to you. the access list solution has some problems associated with it. What are they ? Note: I am not criticizing Bills solution. That also is an option. If you can send a network diagram, I will recreate it in m lab and show you the affect of using an access list and a Web Director.
