L3-Switching & Inter-vlan routing [7:6096]
the following packet match the same rule will be directly switched by the L3-Swtich or MLS-enabled Switch. Inter-Vlan Routing: This is kind of routing. This first packet and the following packet will be routed by the router, not switch. So you will find the Inter-Vlan routing can not provide wire-speed forwarding. ** CCSI: 21130 XuJing ** Message Posted at: http://www.groupstudy.com/form/read.php?f=7&i=6096&t=6096 -- FAQ, list archives, and subscription info: http://www.groupstudy.com/list/cisco.html Report misconduct and Nondisclosure violations to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Re: CCIE Lab setup [7:4872]
You'll need to be able to setup the 2511 for term server/console connections to the LAB routers. Look at the Cisco CCIE Routing Webpage and click the equipment list link to see what they use in the CCIE Lab - that will probably answer some of your questions about whether to replace or not. http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/625/ccie/certifications/routing.html It's true the modular routers will hold their value better, but so do the multiport 2500's as so kindly pointed out when I asked for help on the mailing list with my lab setup. -e- - Original Message - From: "Rashid Lohiya" To: Sent: Thursday, May 17, 2001 10:36 AM Subject: CCIE Lab setup [7:4872] > Hi, > > my currently lab setup at home.I need a little advice. > > I am thinking of replacing my collection of 25xx routers with modular > routers to practise lab scenarios for CCIE. > > Please can you advise whether it would be advisable to get rid of my 2511 > and buy a 2-Port Asynch NM to give my my 16 Asych RJ45 feeds. > > I am also thinking of buying a 4-Port Serial T1 Card for my 3600, to give me > 6 Serial interfaces to practise most FR scenarios, instead of buying a > 2521/2522. > > coupled with my regular 2600 with FE, 1003, and 2 x 1750's 4v's (2xFXS Cards > & Bri) . What does the following mean ?it's cut from a description of WS-X4232-L3 on cisco website. The Catalyst 4003 and 4006 Layer 3 Services module provides interVLAN routing for the Catalyst 4000 family switch and provides Layer 3 switching between the Gigabit Ethernet interfaces. Now i read somewhere like x25 retry command and backup interface command ... how can i use them can anybody send me the configuration and also will this work on ver 11.3 i tried it on ver11.3 but i think it doesn';t support it Pls suggest something . Re: Wanna Be a CCIE? Try This One [7:6076]
Chuck, Is that what set off the great "Virtual link" thread, which I might add, has become quite heated? I was just skimming the list for the past couple of days, so I didn't really catch the beginning. I'm not sure it's been resolved yet, but I know the answer to the question if that's of any interest. It's kind of a trick question... In OSPF, traffic between two non-zero areas (such as area1 and area2 in the diagram below) must traverse the backbone, area0. This is a special circumstance though, because router2 is virtually linked to area0, since it doesn't have a direct connection. The end result is that traffic between areas 1 and 2 does pass through area0, but not in the way most people think. R2 is a backbone router, by virtue of it's virtual link, so it may pass traffic between areas1 and 2 directly. This does not break any rules, and is in fact a desired behavior. Re: What do "interVLAN routing "and" Layer 3 switching " mean [7:6084]
Hi OK I'll bite... Yes there is a difference. It gets a little convoluted, but there is a difference. L3 switching: Think of a L3 switch as a multi port router that operates at wire speed. The 2948G-L3 is an example. It is just a 50 port Ethernet router. So L3 switching is routing traffic at wire speeds. You could use one of these to route between VLANs, or route between networks. Inter-VLAN routing: This is a technique, technology that is only used to route traffic from one VLAN to other VLAN(s). It generally takes place at wire speeds inside a Cat switch with a L3 switch option, but is often see with routers that do not work at wire speeds. So the bottom line... think of a L3 switch as a device, and Inter-VLAN routing as a technology. Re: ATM for home lab: MM or SM? [7:6077]
>From what I've seen recently on Ebay, the prices for 4500/4700 SM modules have been cheaper than 4500/4700 MM modules. Your cabling won't affect the upper layer protocols, so the cheaper cable is the best choice. Also, I rarely see SM modules in the LS100 switches advertised on Ebay. If you decide to buy SM modules for either of your routers, make sure you got a switch with SM lined up first. Wanna Be a CCIE? Try This One [7:6076]
Ever wonder what the CCIE candidates talk about on the CCIE list? The following message came through today. I thought the bright folks on this list might be curious, and might want to venture an answer. Begin original question: Guys, I wonder if there is anybody who remembers the discussion on Virtual Links in OSPF. It was posted some time ago but I can't seem to find it. The scenario was something like this: ___ ___ |Area 0 | |Area1||Area2| |R0|--| R1 |--| R2 | |__| |_||_| There is a virtual link from area 2 to Area 0 via Area1. Traffic needs to get to R1 in Area 1 from R2 in Area 2. Assume that the virtual link has to use R1 (To create the V.Link). Does the traffic flow passed R1 (in Area 1) to Area 0 and then back to area 1, or does the actual flow just to R1 from R2. I cant remember the conclusion, and I cant seem to find it on the archives. Quite interesting issues. End of original question Chuck One IOS to forward them all. One IOS to find them. One IOS to summarize them all And in the routing table bind them. -JRR Chambers- Message Posted at: http://www.groupstudy.com/form/read.php?f=7&i=6076&t=6076 -- FAQ, list archives, and subscription info: http://www.groupstudy.com/list/cisco.html Report misconduct and Nondisclosure violations to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Re: help --------------Pls ................OIR Error [7:6021]
Well not sure about the stat but since its an event not an specific error I would try following : - Though there is an OIR event configure same port & put it online, verify X25 works. Even if it works make sure you dont have any errors on link. - Try changing cable/PA/bay on same box. - If you another router running same image then use same cable/pa to make sure if you get same error. If that works then change logging level, also make sure you dont have any records by typing following commands if its there then add more information to mail. - show exception - show align thanks, rahul. - Original Message - From: "Arun" To: Sent: Saturday, May 26, 2001 10:06 PM Subject: Re: help --Pls OIR Error [7:6021] > Hi > Here the detail for u i have ver 11.8 runnign on it > > Cisco Internetwork Operating System Software > IOS (tm) 3600 Software (C3640-JS-M), Version 11.3(8), RELEASE SOFTWARE (fc1) > Copyright (c) 1986-1999 by cisco Systems, Inc. > Compiled Tue 02-Feb-99 14:13 by dschwart > Image text-base: 0x60008918, data-base: 0x608E8000 > > ROM: System Bootstrap, Version 11.1(20)AA1, EARLY DEPLOYMENT RELEASE > SOFTWARE (f > c1) > System image file is "flash:c3640-js-mz.113-8", booted via flash > > cisco 3640 (R4700) processor (revision 0x00) with 49152K/16384K bytes of > memory. > Processor board ID 13831748 > R4700 processor, Implementation 33, Revision 1.0 > Bridging software. > > > Regards > Arun Sharma > > ""Chuck Larrieu"" wrote in message > [EMAIL PROTECTED]">news:[EMAIL PROTECTED]... > > Beat the hell out of me. > > > > In the past I have posted about problems with earlier 12.x codes, where if > I > > plugged serial cables into a serial interface while the router was powered > > on, IP would not work, although IPX would. > > > > I've had people tell me I was an idiot, and this couldn't happen. Re: CIT Exam Cram Book [7:5294]
I knew the book existed because it was advertised in the Remote Access Exam Cram, but I could not find it at any of the big Canadian retailers either. However, one day I came across a bunch of copies at Price Club/Costco in Kitchener Ontario. And it was only $25.99 instead of $44.99. This was several months ago. For what it's worth, I'm not particularly fond of this series and have a hard time trusting what I read is accurate, however it's ok as a supplemental review. RE: Different kind of switching [7:6064]
Its all on www.cisco.com. You just have to dig for it. A quick search on "autonomous switching" brought up many links. Here is the first. http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/software/ios11/cbook/cip.htm #xtocid1051776 watch the wrap. > -Original Message- > From: mak [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] > Sent: Sunday, May 27, 2001 11:13 AM > To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] > Subject: Different kind of switching [7:6064] > > > Hi, > > Would someone can tell me how can I locate the info about the > difference > between different kinds of switching, such as fast switching, flow > switching, distributed fast switching etc. > > Thanks > > regards, > mak > FAQ, list archives, and subscription info: > http://www.groupstudy.com/list/cisco.html > Report misconduct > and Nondisclosure violations to [EMAIL PROTECTED] Message Posted at: http://www.groupstudy.com/form/read.php?f=7&i=6067&t=6064 -- FAQ, list archives, and subscription info: http://www.groupstudy.com/list/cisco.html Report misconduct and Nondisclosure violations to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Free Layer 3 Catalyst Lab (Kitty++) [7:6066]
More is never enough. This obvious truth being stated, we'll move on to the details of our latest 'event' :-) Using reverse telnet to 24.3.233.101 with a userid and password of 'ebay' you will find the following toys port 2008Catalyst 5000 /w WS-X5530-E2 NFFC supervisor 3 engine port 2007Cisco 4500 /w fast ethernet (not yet functional, must be made to netboot due to small flash) port 2006Cisco 7206 /w fast ethernet port 2005 Cisco 2501 port 2004Cisco 2501 port 2003Cisco MC3810 port 2002Cat 2912-XL-EN (due in Tuesday) For the moment all of these devices have no passwords beyond the userid ebay/password ebay needed to get past the terminal server HOWEVER the last time I provided a free online lab some buttnozzle, against my explicit instructions, went around and put passwords on every device. I don't mind providing this stuff when its around but this kind of behavior drives me to distraction so there is now a new policy: This stuff will be freely available over the long Memorial Day weekend and you can email myself ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) or Peter Slow ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) and we'll patch up anything that goes wrong. Once the weekend is over we're going to lock it down for our personal use HOWEVER we will accept small cash bribes ($10?) via paypal for a day of dedicated access. I think this will keep the lab available, still darned close to free, and save Pete and I a lot of tech support headaches. We owe massive props to: Peter Slow - the world's youngest AND shortest CCNP (17, 5' nothing) - for the loan of the Catalyst and supervisor engine Optimum Data - for the loan of the PA-FE-TX, the WS-X5224 in the Catalyst, and the entire 4500 /w fast ethernet. Dan Jaffe - for the loan of the Cat 2912 You can reach Optimum Data @ 800-879-8795 and I counted maybe 80 - 100 25xx series routers in their warehouse when I was in there a week ago. I think Michael Beacom ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) is the guy handling education sales now that I am gone. ISL and MTU [7:6059]
Hi group I am currently studying for BCMSN 640-504 and I thought of this question: If you reduce MTU from the default 1518 byte size to 1488 you will not get baby giant frames if using ISL True or False ? This is not a question from any book or any exam and I had it since I was studying for CCNA. Any input is welcome. PS Thank you all in advance this is a great forum and I learn something new every day !
