I know this might veer off topic:

Maybe I am biased (and partly curious), mostly due to working at a
 company
that actually did refer to its building sub-units as pods, and
subsequently its network subnets (with a scheme pretty much dictated by
 the
company campus' physical subdivisions) as pods, but does the Cisco HQ
campus have multiple building pods as well? It is an actual term used
 in
architecture. Has it perhaps slipped over into being part of Cisco's
  network terminology?

Perhaps this preconception on my part had me thinking of the pods in the
BSCN book in this manner. I did notice, perhaps I am wrong, but the
individual pods in the Cisco book tend to have separate areas (in OSFP
scenarios This might seem like a stupid question, but sometimes having
  english as my
2nd language, makes it more difficult for me to understand what the
 writer
  is trying to tell me.

I am in the middle of my BSCN book, and are now seeing the word POD
 showing
up several times. It tells me that each POD has a number of routers,
and
there are a certain amount of POD's.

Reading the explanation at http://www.dictionary.com gave me NO answers
 to
this one, and the closest thing I can guess my self to is that POD's
are
kind of departments or subnets, unless the Prince Of Darkness has been
involved with Cisco networks lately :-)

Thanks for any replies to this one.

When talking about using SSH on the router please take into account the

Re: Dead console port [7:10245]

2001-06-28 Thread EA Louie

Raul - my apologies...I've been busy with non-email and non-router
activities for the past few days. Now that I'm back...

The method I used only works with a blank configuration (I actually had
priveleged EXEC access by guessing the enable password of cisco)

For a non-blank configuration, the only solution I could propose is cracking
the box and somehow erasing the NVRAM, and someone more knowledgable than me
would have to lead you through that exercise.

 Dear group,

I saw EA Louie's post on how he got into his router which had no config on
it and a dead console. From reading on the CCO site he seemed to have used
SLARP to upload config to the router. I found the article on CCO and tried
to duplicate the feat on a router with a dead console and a config. It did
not work, any insights? Does the router have to be configless for this to
 work?

using the Cisco Press study guides and CCO.

I just got my CCNP yesterday. I used three or four books per test:
CiscoPress  1) Courseware Book, i.e. Cisco Internetworkign Troubleshooting;
2) CCNP Support Exam Vertification Guide; ExamCram 3) CCNP Support; and
Sybex 4) Support by Todd Lammle and et al. A lot of money, but now these
bboks are my reference library for my CCIE studies.

I am just wondering if anyone has any recommendations for good books,
especially involving routing protocols such as OSPF/BGP/EIGRP, for someone
at the CCNP level looking towards gaining enough knowledge for the CCIE
written and eventually CCIE lab (gulp). I am after not just a study
guide,
but for more detailed info - not targetted at a specific exam but more to
increase the detail of my knowledge in these areas.

A couple that I am looking at (that you guys have talked about in this
 list):
-Routing tcp/ip vol 2 by Cisco Press
-Top down network design by Priscilla

It would be great if you could make some suggestions as to what good books
 you have found.

 Thanks in advance!

Re: 2503 for CCNP ? [7:10248]

2001-06-28 Thread Circusnuts

It's a good router, but just one device is not going to help with the CCNP.
To be honest, I backed away from using the lab while taking these tests.
They are Cisco Press based remembering the details concepts seemed to
help more than the practical hands on. Don't get me wrong, industry
experience helps flush out the ridiculous multiple choice options.

What's constitutes a good price ??? Between the lay-offs summer (very few
people studying), Cisco equipment is very reasonable lately. I've purchased
quite a lot: fully populated LS1010 for $3500, loaded 2502 for $395,
3524XL-EN for $950, 2621 for $1549.

Do you already have Routing TCP/IP Volume One? It covers OSPF, RIP,
IGRP, and EIGRP as well as route maps, all of which you have to know for
some of the CCNP tests.

For BGP, I'd recommend two books:

BGP4: Interdomain Routing in the Internet by John W. Stewart III.
Short but truly excellent little book!

Internet Routing Architectures, 2nd Edition by Sam Halabi.

Another good book for CCNP/CCIE level study is Bridges, Routers, and
Switches for CCIE's by Andrew Bruce Caslow.

There are probably too many good books to mention, but I've found those
to be indispensable.

Hi!
Here is the list of devices that would support Layer3 switching:
http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/lan/cat5000/rel_5_2/layer3/intro.htm

You can also read a little bit about it in this white paper:

http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/cc/so/neso/lnso/cpso/l3c85_wp.htm

The question here is why 2600 is not listed as one of the options, although
it has a fast ethernet port and supports ISL, for example. I think it is
because of the performance issues. It might happen that 2650 series will
support it some day also. Who knows...?

RE: SSH over Internet - secure? [7:10251]

2001-06-28 Thread Sean Young

Let me also add that Secure Shell version 2 is very secure. Furthermore,
use OpenSSh because it is free and I believe the latest version is 2.5.x
or something. One other thing, if you change the keylength from 768
(which is th default) to 1024 with SSH version 2, it will make box
rock-solid.

Re: Secondary IP Address Disappeared !! [7:10274]

2001-06-28 Thread Kevin Wigle

I can't speak to the BRI modules having problems but they probably had to
turn the router off to insert the BRIs and then start up again.

Look at bug CSCdr51651.

When the router was rebooted, an error msg appeared on the console about
permanent address not allowed on a negotiated interface - or words to that
effect.

We weren't using a negotiated interface. This probably refers to the new
command ip address dhcp (which really is a rename of ip address
negotiated)

Anyway, on reboot - the IOS would delete any secondary addresses.

We had to move to another IOS version.

4500 vs 4500M [7:10278]

2001-06-28 Thread Alex Lee

Group,

It is my understanding that the 4500M uses a different microprocessor and
perhaps some other system feature differences.

My question are :
Would IOS images listed for 4500M work also on 4500 if it meets the minmum
system requirement like flash and RAM size ? Or, if there is such a thing
that there are different images for 4500 and 4500M.

Also, is the flash interchangeable between 4500 and 4500M ?

Thanks

RE: Cisco Works [7:10266]

2001-06-28 Thread Georgescu, Aurelian

First, it uses SNMP. You can greatly simplify and say it's a GUI that helps
you use SNMP to manage your CISCO stuff.
Second, you have to read the manual (no shortcut here, sorry!). You have to
start by installing CD One, which is the main server component. Then you
can add different modules for various platforms, if you purchased them. Pay
attention to the hardware/software requirements for each module. You will
find detailed description of each step along the way in each module's
manual. Then you can use your browser to connect to the server.

Re: Ethernet multicast [7:10272]

2001-06-28 Thread Priscilla Oppenheimer

At 09:12 AM 6/28/01, Ramesh c wrote:

The first three bytes are still a vendor code (with the multicast bit
turned on). So that reduces the number of possible multicast addresses.

If
so how are the Addresses generated or stored?

The Ethernet driver keeps track of which multicasts to listen to.

2)How are the Ip Multicast address mapped to Ethernet multicast address?

IP multicasting transmits IP data to a group of hosts that are identified
by a single Class-D IP address. In dotted-decimal notation, host group
addresses range from 224.0.0.0 to 239.255.255.255. Network stations
recognize an address as being a Class-D address because the first four bits
must be 1110 in binary.
A multicast group is also identified by a MAC-layer multicast address.

The Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) owns a block of MAC-layer
addresses that are used for group multicast addresses. The range of
addresses for Ethernet is 01:00:5E:00:00:00 -- 01:00:5E:7F:FF:FF. When a
station sends a frame to an IP group that is identified by a Class-D
address, the station inserts the low-order 23 bits of the Class-D address
into the low-order 23 bits of the MAC-layer destination address. The top 9
bits of the Class-D address are not used. The top 25 bits of the MAC
address are 01:00:5E followed by a zero, or, in binary:
0001 0100 0

Priscilla

Unfortunately, I don't think you can use the isdn call command on the 1603. I

attention to the hardware/software requirements for each module. You will
find detailed description of each step along the way in each module's
manual. Then you can use your browser to connect to the server.

On our router we have following statements:

First, it uses SNMP. You can greatly simplify and say it's a GUI that helps
you use SNMP to manage your CISCO stuff.
Second, you have to read the manual (no shortcut here, sorry!). You have to
start by installing CD One, which is the main server component. Then you
can add different modules for various platforms, if you purchased them. Pay
attention to the hardware/software requirements for each module. You will
find detailed description of each step along the way in each module's

let's talk about BGP! [7:10297]

2001-06-28 Thread CiscoG

Hello fellow successful Engineer's;

For all you BGP gurus, I have a situation here. Currently
preparing for my BSCN exam, I have a lab at home that I recently implemented
BGP on. With only 3 routers, it worked fantastic! Then I decided that wasn't
good enough and now I wanted to setup a Route Reflector. In a Hub and Spoke
topology, I chose to make the Hub router the Router reflector and have the
two spoke routers clients. Performing a show ip bgp neighbor on each
router, displays the correct information and verifies connection is
established. The problem is, not one router is learning any BGP routes! I
will post my basic BGP configuration below just to verify that is correct.
Any ideas on this challenge would be appreciated! Thank you!

6509 [7:10299]

2001-06-28 Thread khramov

hi,
I am trying to config 6509 switch. I am adding vlan interfaces to the
RSM. I've got some Class B addresses and class C addresses. When I add
a class C address and for s.m. I put 255.255.255.0 it comes back with
message that /24 is a bad mask for this address. When I put 255.255.0.0
it accepts it. Will it cause any problems? Is there a problem with
running class B and class C ip addreses at the same time?
Switch itself has a class B address.
Thanks in advance,
Alex

T1 concept? [7:10300]

2001-06-28 Thread RJ

Hello,

What is the difference between a frame connection to a branch office (I have
configured this) and T1 to the internet (I don't know how this is
configured).
I have heard that our company has a T1 from a (HQ)Atlanta to
(backoffice)Tampa.
Also they have a T1 to the internet.
They also have numerous frame connections to small offices through out the
country.

When somebody says that they have a T1 to the internet what exactly does
this mean? What protocols (encapsulation) are they running? Is it PPP or is
it a frame connection? How does one connect to the ISP?

I am sure these questions have simple answers. Can somebody please explain
this concept?

Thanks in advance.

Regards,

RJ.

Re: let's talk about BGP! [7:10297]

2001-06-28 Thread Bradley J. Wilson

It doesn't look like there are any other subnets left to learn - every
router is configured with the same network statements.

Roger Gore suggested static routes to non-existent routes that point to
null0 as the next hop - this is a good suggestion. I just wanted to point
out the *why* part. :-)

1603 router config - part 2 [7:10304]

2001-06-28 Thread Andrew Lawrence

I've managed to connect 2 1603 routers together up to a fashion but I
have 2 questions

From one router I can ping the other router (it dials the number
connects and then the ping replies)

From the other router if I ping it dials but gets disconnected, a debug
shows the following

01:50:12: BR0 DDR: rotor dialout [priority]
01:50:12: BR0 DDR: Dialing cause ip (s=172.30.70.2, d=192.168.10.2)
01:50:12: BR0 DDR: Attempting to dial 02077394093
01:50:12: %LINK-3-UPDOWN: Interface BRI0:1, changed state to up
01:50:12: %DIALER-6-BIND: Interface BR0:1 bound to profile Di1
01:50:12: %ISDN-6-CONNECT: Interface BRI0:1 is now connected to
02077394093
01:50:13: %LINK-3-UPDOWN: Interface BRI0:1, changed state to down
01:50:13: DDR: Call disconnected, 1 packets unqueued and discarded
01:50:13: BR0 DDR: has total 2 call(s), dial_out 0, dial_in 0
01:50:13: %DIALER-6-UNBIND: Interface BR0:1 unbound from profile Di1
01:50:13: BR0:1 DDR: disconnecting call.

Question 1 Why is it doing this , I haven't really paod much attention
to authentication, is any going on !

Question 2 If I have PCs on the network with the router that does dial
out OK and have their default gateway set are they likely to communicate
with a server on the other side (if that has its gateway set as well)
i.e is there any other ip type config required on the routers?

PIX 5.25 ftp Passive-non Passive [7:10306]

2001-06-28 Thread Mears, Rob

Question for the gods,

We have a requirement to retrieve data from a client's FTP server which is
not Passive in natures, meaning it does not support. My pix box has no
problems getting to FTP sites that support Passive mode. I am 90% sure the
problem is with the client and not me. I have researched this and have
found, in order to allow my users to the FTP I would have to open a range of
ports on the Fwall. Has anyone run into this and does anyone have a easy
fix? I am about to tell the client to (##$%^) just submit and upgrade their
FTP but who knows how long this will take.

How about some help.

Thanks

Curtis,

Here's a copy of the config. One thing that's important besides the
commands is that in the older IOS versions, you must do a Control+C to get
out of config mode, 'exit' is not a valid command. Also, the STS-10 does
not support routing, hence the need for the 'default-gateway' statement.
Other than that, you should be good to go:

RE: SSH over Internet - secure? [7:10251]

2001-06-28 Thread Kent Hundley

Sam,

As others have mentioned, SSHv1 has some problems and unfortunately, Cisco
has implemented v1 in their products, not v2.

Above and beyond this however, ssh can be vulnerable to a Man In The
Middle attack (MITM). This is because in the way most people use it, when
a client first connects to a server and get asked if they want to accept the
servers key, they simply say yes and move on. If you don't verify the key
independently, you can't be sure that your really talking to the real
server. Code has been written to specifically exploit this, you can find it
and more info on this topic here:

http://www.monkey.org/~dugsong/dsniff/

Bottom line, it's best if you first contact the server to get its public key
over a secured local network. Barring this, you should verify the key is
correct after accepting the key the first time you connect.

HTH,
Kent

Gday everyone,

Generally, do you feel that using SSH to administer a router over the
Internet is secure, assuming all other aspects of the router config are
secured?

Thanks for your input

Sam.

Five-in-one synchronous serial [7:10312]

2001-06-28 Thread Ole Drews Jensen

I am looking for a router with 3 or more synchronous serial ports for my
lab, but all the fixed 2500 models only have a max of two.

I can see that you can get a five-in-one synchronous serial WAN interface
card for the 2524 and 2525, but does that mean that I can connect five
different 2501's (to take an example) to this one port with a special cable?

Also, would that be the best and/or cheapest solution, or can some of you
with labs at home throw me a good idea what to look for?

I need the same kind of synchronous DB60 serial ports as my 2501's/2502's
have.

Thanks,

Ole

A friend of mine did the BCRAN at the same time as I did the BSCN a couple
of days ago. Both of the exams used the same format. Choose from an indexed
list of commands.
This still means that you may need to know the correct mode as some of the
commands are replicated at different modes. ie. The indexed list does
contain commands which are shown in the wrong mode.

When I did the BCMSN 2 months ago, it didn't use this format. Anybody know
if this has gone over to this format now? Some of the lads in the office
were wondering.

It doesn't look like there are any other subnets left to learn - every
router is configured with the same network statements.

Roger Gore suggested static routes to non-existent routes that point to
null0 as the next hop - this is a good suggestion. I just wanted to point

Hello fellow successful Engineer's;

Thank you!

No...

The 5in1 serial interface card (used only in the 2524 2525 ) is a single
port that can be used with 5 seperate cables but only 1 at anytime

I am looking for a router with 3 or more synchronous serial ports for my
lab, but all the fixed 2500 models only have a max of two.

I can see that you can get a five-in-one synchronous serial WAN interface
card for the 2524 and 2525, but does that mean that I can connect five
different 2501's (to take an example) to this one port with a special cable?

Also, would that be the best and/or cheapest solution, or can some of you
with labs at home throw me a good idea what to look for?

I need the same kind of synchronous DB60 serial ports as my 2501's/2502's
have.

Thanks,

Ole

no, the five-in-one refers to support for different standard, v.35 rs232
etc It is still a single port. If you need 5 plus serial ports on a
machine for a home lab consider an AGS+ , old, a little slow and noisy, but
you can't beat the price.

Re: connecting 3500XL and 2948GL3 [7:10159]

2001-06-28 Thread Bob S

Yes, it does. I think you mean you have a gigastack module and the
connectors look like copper but they are optics. Cisco does not support
copper giga until 3550 platfform.

You need one of the following:
1000BaseSX GBIC module for fiber connections of up to 550 meters.
1000BaseLX/LH GBIC module for fiber connections of up to 10 kilometers.
1000BaseZX GBIC module for fiber connections of up to 100 kilometers.

Look here for more info:

I am trying to connect 3500XL and 2948 through a GBIC. It did not work
because I had copper GBIC's in both and the 2948 doesn't accept copper. My
question is, does the 3500 accept fiber GBIC's so I can wire them fiber to
fiber. Has anyone done this? I am currentlt using a 100MB crossover to
connect the 2 but would like to have a Gigabit connection between the 2.
Thanks.

I've managed to connect 2 1603 routers together up to a fashion but I
have 2 questions

From one router I can ping the other router (it dials the number
connects and then the ping replies)

From the other router if I ping it dials but gets disconnected, a debug
shows the following

01:50:12: BR0 DDR: rotor dialout [priority]
01:50:12: BR0 DDR: Dialing cause ip (s=172.30.70.2, d=192.168.10.2)

01:50:13: %DIALER-6-UNBIND: Interface BR0:1 unbound from profile Di1
01:50:13: BR0:1 DDR: disconnecting call.

Question 1 Why is it doing this , I haven't really paod much attention
to authentication, is any going on !

Question 2 If I have PCs on the network with the router that does dial
out OK and have their default gateway set are they likely to communicate
with a server on the other side (if that has its gateway set as well)
i.e is there any other ip type config required on the routers?

Re: 1603 router config - part 2 [7:10304]

2001-06-28 Thread Bradley J. Wilson

I'm not an expert at dial stuff (yet) and don't have a router in front of
me, but my first thought is: is the router sending the correct SPID? Also,
which debug script output are we looking at here, and what other debugs
could you run? Try running both q931 and q921 - that will cover both L3 and
L2.

Subject: 1603 router config - part 2 [7:10304]

OT - Ciscoview on Cat4000 [7:10333]

2001-06-28 Thread Gareth Hinton

Hi all,

Anybody experienced with the fairly basic Ciscoview package available as a
separate image on some switches (integrated on others)
I installed some Cat 4006's a few days ago. While I was on site the customer
asked if they were manageable from a browser. Bit of a bluff and a few
minutes later I downloaded the separate image for the Ciscoview package,
enabled http server and tried to set it up.
For some reason on that day we were having problems downloading the 5Mb Java
plug-in available from Javasoft, so as this was a bit of an extra, I said
I'd download the plug-in and send it to them.

I downloaded the plug-in, set up a 4000 at work and everything worked first
time on Win2000.
Customer says he's getting a blank screen after the enable password prompt.
This is the point where my Java plug-in takes over and I'm asked for SNMP
strings.
Set it up on a new NT machine, and I can't get it to break either.

Anybody know the details for the username prompt. I seem to be able to use
any username with the correct password. Is this only used for other
authentication methods such as radius/tacacs?
Don't seem to be able to do anything like a set username xx password
yy.

Anybody know any details of specific requirements for the client PC?

Details on CCO seem very limited. TAC is next, but I've been determined to
sort it myself until now.

Cheers,

Gaz

Ole- I can't remember right off the top of my head, but I believe it is the
2522 model that has like 4 or 8 DB60 Serial interfaces on it plus an
Ethernet interface.

This was used as a Frame Switch in my VoIP class at Global Knowledge back
in July of last year.

It sounds like this is what you would be looking for. Unfortunately, I
don't know what the avg. price would be for one.

Anybody else have an idea as to the price of the model I'm thinking of, and
what model it is, if it isn't the 2522??

no, the five-in-one refers to support for different standard, v.35 rs232

access lists?

(2) We presently have all our computers in just one domain. WIll this work
with VLANs?

(3)For those who are currently have VLANs operating in their companies, are
they pretty low maintenance? Are they complicated? Or easy to work with?

Thanks.

Buy the Boson test. Hate to write this but I counted 44 questions on the
written that were on Boson tests 1 and 2 (that's out of 100!) The questions
were too accurate - even had the same WRONG answers.

I like what you're doing though. You can't violate the NDA if you haven't
taken it yet.

Good luck,

RE: Five-in-one synchronous serial [7:10312]

2001-06-28 Thread Daniel Cotts

Consider anything in the 2520-2523 range. They have two sync serial that
will do a max of 2 Mbs but the other ports will do up to 115kbs sync. If you
want all 2Mbs ports then consider a 4500M with a four port serial module.

RE: CCIE written blueprints. Lets pass this blueprint around [7:10341]

2001-06-28 Thread Dennis Laganiere

Before this goes to far, let me make some suggestions (from one who's been
there)...

1) There are several sites that have already compiled information for this
exam, including my own notes which are free on Cramsession (by the way,
you'll find a list of corrections for the most glaring errors in the
archives). You'll find a few of these sites if you search the archives.
2) There are several good books for prep-ing for this exam (a look in the
archives will provide this as well).
3) CCBootcamp sells an excellent set of notes for this exam (I don't know
how much they are, but I bet it's in the archives).
4) Grab the bosons to help firm up your knowledge (look to the archives for
opinions on this).
5) Read the archives (have I emphasized that enough)... :-)

Somebody mentioned that the test was $300 now. If you did everything I
suggested here (including downloading all three bosons) you'd spend less
then blowing the test just once...

Just my $.02

Lastly, if you can't find the corrections to the cramsession, write me
off-line and I'll send you the list.

2001-06-28 Thread Jennifer Cribbs

Well people, I did not pass. I failed my first test.

I got 603 with 615 to pass. I knew lack of experience would be a big
deciding factor in my score. I can only say, what
I knew, I knew real well and the other things, I guessed at.

Very very very hard test. Much harder than the 507 and the 504 in my
opinion. But, I am going to try and test again in
a couple of weeks. Most of what was on it was networking essentials with 98
and 95 and 2k admin thrown in with a
few bios questions to round it off. The network admin stuff is what really
threw me.

One more point here. If I had passed with 615, I would have quit studying
in this area for awhile, but this way when I
pass I will do better than 615. This test had very unfamiliar areas on it.

so my score is nowpassed two, failed oneoh well

I am going have a few drinks, take a nap and start studying again!!

Have a great day!!

2001-06-28 Thread Ole Drews Jensen

Thanks Daniel,

I am not that technical in this area yet, but does that mean that I can
connect four 2501's to one 2520 with two 2501's connected to the same
speed interfaces, and the other two 2501's to the low speed interfaces?

I was not aware that you could connect a high speed synchronous serial
interface to a low speed synchronous serial interface.

I was thinking about maybe a 2610 with 2 WAN interface cards, each with 2
synchronous ports, but I haven't calculated what that would cost me yet.

Thanks,

Ole

I would agree... e-mail me the blueprint and I'll see which parts I
can
 fill in =)

Why? I am not doing anything wrong. I am just answering the
blueprint
objective! If I was divulging Cisco exam info that would be a NDA
   violation.
If I am wrong I apologize.

Can I get some ffed back from the group? Is it wrong?

Re: VLANs [7:10335]

2001-06-28 Thread Sam

1. Yes, you can use ACLs to restrict traffic between VLANs (doesn't need to
be a L3 switch - any router supporting ISL or 802.1q will do the trick)
2. Yes, one domain can exist across multiple VLANs
3. No, they are not complicated or difficult to work with, but they do add a
measure of maintenance. Be sure to keep documentation current when working
with VLANs. Documentation will help tremendously when troubleshooting or
making changes with the VLANs.

Hope this answers your questions
Sam

 Hi guys,

I'd like to get a layer 3 switch for the company. We'd like to place our
main server and computers with sensitive information in VLAN2 and place
all
 other computers on VLAN1.

(1)For Layer3 switches, what is the security feature between VLANs? Is it
 access lists?

 (2) We presently have all our computers in just one domain. WIll this
work
 with VLANs?

(3)For those who are currently have VLANs operating in their companies,
are
they pretty low maintenance? Are they complicated? Or easy to work with?

 Thanks.

I'm not an expert at dial stuff (yet) and don't have a router in front of

which debug script output are we looking at here, and what other debugs
could you run? Try running both q931 and q921 - that will cover both L3
and
 L2.

 Subject: 1603 router config - part 2 [7:10304]

 TIA

 Andy
