Re: isdn status [7:12599]

2001-07-17 Thread Charlie Hartwell

The first call failed because there were no available b-channels at
the remote end (0x82A2).
>From this information I cannot see why layer 1 is going down - try
running "debug isdn q921" and "debug bri" to see if that gives any
clues - it is most likely to be a telco problem though.

Cheers

Ports with PIX Firewall [7:12605]

2001-07-17 Thread Lano Kris

I configured my PIX Firewall and opened all the TCP ports, I found that i
can ping yahoo or cisco by ip address but not with name i.e ping cisco.com
doesn't worked, then I opened all the UDP Ports also and my Surfing started
also I was been able to PING by name.

I just want to allow port 80 (HTTP), FTP , SMTP access to my users.

Which all Ports do I need to Open??

DO I Need to open a port for DNS Name Resolution ?
I am using DNS Server of ISP as I don't have resources to set-up my own DNS.

Please Help

NSE-1 and full BGP table with IOS 12.2 [7:12612]

2001-07-17 Thread George Stylianou

hi,

Does anyone happen to know the memory requirements for cisco NSE-1 running
IOS 12.2.2T in order to carry full BGP table (+/- 10 routes)?

I have seen problems with having 128mb - the router runs out of memory a few
minutes after rebooting then shuts down CEF and BGP.

thanks
George

I configured my PIX Firewall and opened all the TCP ports, I found that
i
can ping yahoo or cisco by ip address but not with name i.e ping
cisco.com
doesn't worked, then I opened all the UDP Ports also and my Surfing
started
also I was been able to PING by name.

I just want to allow port 80 (HTTP), FTP , SMTP access to my users.

Which all Ports do I need to Open??

DO I Need to open a port for DNS Name Resolution ?
I am using DNS Server of ISP as I don't have resources to set-up my own
DNS.

Please Help

Nowhere. Cisco says that the exam marks can change without notice and they
don't publish them. They are different for each exam. You will find your
passing score just befor the exam begins.

Re: BSCN [7:12555]

2001-07-17 Thread Cezar Fistik

Hey, be very well prepared. The exam is very hard. It doesn't even compare
with the CCNA. I just passed it (yesterday) and I got 896. Frankly, in the
middle of the exam I was sure that I won't pass it but as you can see I was
wrong. I didn't expec this exam to be so hard. I got lots of OSPF and BGP
questions, many policy routing and some supernettting. That's all I can
remember.

Regards.

The first call failed because there were no available b-channels at
the remote end (0x82A2).

HELP! Frame Relay HELP! [7:12632]

2001-07-17 Thread Ray Smith

I was doing one of the frame relay labs from Hutnik's CCIE lab books and did
not understand the following:-

1. Why is it that I could only ping from Router-A to Router-B and
vice-versa, but can not ping their own interfaces?

2. Why is the routing protocol (RIP in this case) configured on Router-A but
not on Router-B, yet I was still able to ping accross end-to-end?

Can someone out there explain this to me? Thanks

Re: Access List problem. [7:12525]

2001-07-17 Thread Jianfeng Wang

Line 6 should be there.

Line 5 define subset of line 6 with type of deny and is widest range in
prior lines.
should stay.

Line 4 source address is in range of 5 with type of permit. destination
address out of
range of 5, so, it equivalence to: permit x.x.x.x 0.0.31.255 y.y.y.y
0.0.0.63. This line
should stay.

Line 3's destination address out of range 4, 5. and fall into 6 with deny.
so, it should
stay.

Line 1, 2 are all in range 6 with permit, is overlapped.

Then, the access-list become:

1.access-list 101 deny ip 172.22.30.0 0.0.0.255 192.168.18.27 0.0.0.0
2.access-list 101 permit ip 172.22.0.0 0.0.31.255 192.168.18.64 0.0.0.63
3.access-list 101 deny ip 172.22.0.0 0.0.255.255 192.168.18.64 0.0.0.63
4.access-list 101 permit ip 0.0.0.0 255.255.255.255 0.0.0.0 255.255.255.255

If it is not wrong with my derive above and original access is equivalent to
access list
above, it is ealy to prove that none of those lines can be removed any more.
So, I think
4 lines access list required.

RE: VTP config on 3548 [7:12629]

2001-07-17 Thread Hire, Ejay

You have to go into VLAN Database mode first. i.e.

config term
VLAN database
vtp client
vtp domain domainname

config term
VLAN database
vtp server

It is important to put in into client mode before joining the domain. If
you don't, Murphy's law says that all of your VLANS on all of your switches
will be erased.

I forgot to put in the link to the page on Cisco.com

The 35xx's software is the same as the 2900xl, so you can look to the
2900xl's documentation. The section on VTP is about 2 pages down.

Add the broadcast command to your dialer map.

Re: HELP! Frame Relay HELP! [7:12632]

2001-07-17 Thread Marc Russell

You don't need a routing protocol to ping a directly connected neighbor ip
address on the same subnet. Inverse arp should of taken care of the layer-2
to layer-3 mapping. As for your own interface add a frame map command for
your own interface and it will work.

Re: Question About Ciscowork [7:12621]

2001-07-17 Thread John Neiberger

Call Cisco! Seriously, if you don't have a service contract on this
software, get one because you're going to need it. CW2k is great if you
can get it working, but it has so many problems that sometimes it takes
a while to resolve them all. We couldn't get it to work at all on HPUX,
even with Cisco's help, so we migrated to NT. We decided to get the
LAN Management Solutions bundle and had lots of problems with it. With
Cisco's help we were able to resolve a couple of issues but it still
wasn't stable and had some major bugs.

So, we had to wait for the latest release which seems to be working
just fine, but we need to run it on a bigger box. Right now it's on a
dual-processor 450MHz machine and it's hogs the cpu pretty badly.

Anyway, back to issue at hand. There are a number of reasons why you
could be having problems with the ANI server and you really should
enlist the help of a Cisco engineer. It may end up being very difficult
to resolve this on your own.

Good luck!

John

Re: Source Quench [7:12477]

2001-07-17 Thread Amit Gupta

Hello Priscilla,

Thanks for your response.

Yes, it could not be a problem with the NIC since Ping
from any of the UNIX machines is fine.

I am using the default timeout while pinging from Unix
machines. I get a Source quench message even when I
specify a higher timeout setting.

RE: Error in configuring ISDN [7:12611]

2001-07-17 Thread Danner, John (ZoomTown)

The spids are definitely wrong:
>From debug:
07:14:249108103167: Null Spid: 0

>From config:
isdn spid1 0
isdn spid2 0

Is this in a lab setting with a isdn simulator or with a transport from the
phone company?
If it's with the phone company you need to put the spids the phone company
gave you into the configuration or you won't be able to dial correctly.

If it's in a lab - I don't know. :(

I may be way off, but I thinks your spids are wrong. Call the Phone company
and ask them what your spids are supposed to be.

Re: PIX 506 Hang up!!! [7:12653]

2001-07-17 Thread Patrick Ramsey

Are you saying that normal operation has all 3 leds on and when you go back
there to reboot it, all three leds are off?

Sounds like a hardware problem. If that is not the case, and all three leds
remain on, then you might have memory problems. Either bad memory, or
NAT/PAT is using all available memory and then locking up.

What are your resources like while the machine is working proerly? Have you
monitored the pix throughout the day to see proc. utilization / memory
utilization?

When I turn its power off and on it works fine for few hours...
and each time It needs to switching off/on the power key.
I do know how to investegate this problem or what is the cause of it...

Re: Boson [7:12609]

2001-07-17 Thread Eugene Kushnirskiy

I found BCMSN and BCRAN tests to be about 70% accurate. CCIE written seems
to have 2 types of the test. If you get the first one, Boson represents
about 30% of it. If you get the second one - it represents about 60-70%. The
good thing about Boson is - it teaches you the way Cisco asks questions on
tests.

RE: Ports with PIX Firewall [7:12605]

2001-07-17 Thread Kent Hundley

Lano,

No offense intended, but I think you need to do some research. I _strongly_
recommend that if you intend to setup and administer your companies PIX
firewall, you read at least:

Building Internet Firewalls - Chapman and Zwicky
The PIX configuration guide - cisco systems
(you can probably knock these out in a weekend)

Also, TCP/IP Illustrated vol 1 is excellent.

You need to understand what the commands are that people are supplying you
and why they work. Its pretty clear from your question that you don't know
how DNS works and you've never configured a PIX. Everyone has to learn
somewhere so I'm not trying to bash you, just offering a little constructive
criticism.

Security is very critical and if you've been charged with maintaining your
companies security perimeter you need to get up to speed very quickly on at
least the basics.

Having said that, if all you want to do is allow inside users access to
HTTP, FTP and SMTP on the Internet, all you have to do is make sure the PIX
interfaces are up, routing is in place and create appropriate NAT and GLOBAL
statements.

The default mode on the PIX is to allow everything from the inside interface
out and only replies from the outside back in. This would include things
like DNS, HTTP, FTP, SMTP, etc.

Assuming that you have an IP address range given to you by your ISP:

nat (inside) 1 0 0 (allow all users on the inside to get global addresses)
global (outside) 1 start_ip-end_ip netmask x.x.x.x

I don't know what you mean when you say "I opened all the TCP ports", but if
your saying that you created a conduit or an access-list to allow all TCP
ports in the outside interface, _you don't need to do that and it's VERY
dangerous_! This is why I say you need to understand what your doing and
not just have people give you configs.

If you read the PIX docs it goes step by step through an initial simple PIX
configuration, which is what it sounds like you have. My advice would be to
read it and follow it to the letter. If you follow the instructions you
should end up with a simple working config.

If you want to start creating access-lists later and applying them to limit
outbound traffic once you understand how things work you can always do that.
Until you fully understand how the PIX works and all of its commands, its
best to start simple and build up your config.

Let me say again, based on what you've stated, it doesn't sound like you
need any conduit or access-list statements. If you have them and your
explicitly allowing traffic in the outside interface, you have likely opened
up large security holes. If you need more help contact me offline and send
me your config.

Again, I cannot stress enough, read the PIX setup doc, it tells you
everything you need to get started with a simple configuration.

HTH,
Kent

Re: OT:anybody knows how to become a CCSI? [7:12564]

2001-07-17 Thread Neil Schneider

Actually, #2 is the worst part. There are a limited # of cisco certified
training providers, and you need sponsorship by one. In fact, the training
center has to pay cisco for each class you are certified to teach, and if
the center no longer sponsors you you loose your CCSI.
The test teach isn't too bad, a one day hands on configure the routers part
and a 1/2 day presentation. You have to present two modules from the ICND
course. All of the hands on is based on ICND as well, except setting up a
router as a frame relay switch.

RE: Ports with PIX Firewall [7:12605]

2001-07-17 Thread Kent Hundley

Sanjeev,

I really hope that this is not taken from your PIX config because the
acl_out access-list is effectively completely disabling the PIX adaptive
security algorithm.

This config would allow all TCP and all UDP packets in the outside
interface. In other words, the PIX would not block any inbound TCP or UDP
packets at all. I can think of no reason why anyone would want to do that
except in very limited test lab situations.

Based on the original request, there's no reason for the poster to use
access-lists, the PIX ASA will permit the return packets from the inside
user requests automatically.

Bottom line, this config is downright dangerous and would completely open
the firewall.

RE: Question About Ciscowork [7:12621]

2001-07-17 Thread Rossetti, Stan

What version did you upgrade to?

I have ciscworks cd-one 2nd edition and I have a tremendous amounts of
problems. I have most of them worked out through trial and error, but I
have been working on them for quite a while. I don't have a service
contract yet and that has been the major problem. I was also running
CiscoWorks on a single processor (450MHZ) with 512 meg of ram and it was
so slow!! I am now using a dual gig processor and 1 gig of memory
machine and it is a lot faster.

One of things that I believe is important when setting up Ciscoworks is you
only have to set the CW2000 daemon manager to automatic under services on a
nt machine and set the rest of the CW2000 services (cw2000 ani database,
cw2000 cmf database, cw2000 essentials, etc...) to manual. The Ciscoworks
software will automatically start the daemon manager service which in turn
will start the rest of the CW2K services.

If you have all of your CW2K services set to automatic then the Ciscoworks
software will try to start them once the daemon manager is turned on and
then windows NT will try to start them as well, which causes a conflict.

Thanks

Good luck!

John

The spids are definitely wrong:

>From config:
isdn spid1 0
isdn spid2 0

Is this in a lab setting with a isdn simulator or with a transport from the
phone company?
If it's with the phone company you need to put the spids the phone company
gave you into the configuration or you won't be able to dial correctly.

If it's in a lab - I don't know. :(

Well...since ICQ uses a wide range of ports it may be easier just to block
access to the ICQ authentication server...

Experiments on why the routing table is growing [7:12667]

2001-07-17 Thread Howard C. Berkowitz

This is a very experimental draft that still may be of interest to
people who are interested not just that the BGP table is growing, but
why it is growing. It's coauthored by Elwyn Davies of Nortel (UK)
and Loa Andersson of Utfors (Sweden).

--

Title : An Experimental Methodology for Analysis of Growth in
   the Global Routing Table
Author(s) : H. Berkowitz et al.
Filename: draft-berkowitz-tblgrow-00.txt
Pages : 5
Date: 16-Jul-01

Measurements [3,4,5] have shown that the rate of growth of routes and
route instances in the default-free table have resumed exponential
growth, which had slowed to linear growth after the introduction of
CIDR [7]. This memorandum explores some analytical methods,
admittedly heuristic in most cases, to understand why growth is
faster than the simple rate of allocation. When accelerated growth
can be attributed to operational practices or poor understanding, it
may be possible to propose approaches to reducing the rate of table
explosion without reducing the services delivered to end users.

New drafts on BGP convergence [7:12666]

2001-07-17 Thread Howard C. Berkowitz

These new Internet Drafts are now standards track in the IETF
Benchmarking Technology Working Group. The terminology draft may
help clear up some often confusing BGP terminology, beyond the pure
area of convergence.

These were coauthored by a multivendor team, including Alvaro Retana
of Cisco, Marianne Lepp of Juniper, Sue Hares and Padma Krisnaswamy
of Nexthop, and myself at Nortel. Elwyn Davies (Nortel) should have
some early experimental data available in the next couple of weeks,
although this is to validate the methodology rather than make any
direct comparisons of commercial routers.

---

Title : Terminology for Benchmarking External Routing
   Convergence Measurements
Author(s) : H. Berkowitz et al.
Filename: draft-ietf-bmwg-conterm-00.txt
Pages :
Date: 16-Jul-01

This draft establishes terminology to standardize the description of
benchmarking methodology for measuring eBGP convergence in the control
plane of a single router. Future documents will address iBGP
convergence, the initiation of forwarding based on converged control
plane information and internet-wide convergence.

Title : Benchmarking Methodology for Basic BGP Convergence
Author(s) : H. Berkowitz et al.
Filename: draft-ietf-bmwg-bgpbas-00.txt
Pages :
Date: 16-Jul-01

This draft establishes standards for measuring BGP convergence
performance. Its initial emphasis is on the control plane of single
BGP routers. We do not address forwarding plane performance.

Re: PIX 506 Hang up!!! [7:12653]

2001-07-17 Thread Allen May

Sounds almsot like it's overheating & shutting off. Is the fan running in
it? If you know anything about SNMP you could use software to browse the
MIBs to check status. Keep in mind I never tried that. All I use SNMP for
is bandwidth in/out and cpu utilization.

Re: NSE-1 and full BGP table with IOS 12.2 [7:12612]

2001-07-17 Thread Frank Kim

George,
You probably end up better with 256megs of ram or more. With 128megs of
ram and you're running 12.2.2T code, assuming that you're running
enterprise or higher level such as for ssh, you probably using about 1/3
of your ram just for loading the ios code. So you don't have much. I
would stick to 12.0xT codes at ip-plus level if all you're doing is bgp on
that router. That will definitely use less memory.

RE: PIX 506 hang up!!!! [7:5132]

2001-07-17 Thread Farhan Ahmed

security breach is occurring
%PIX-7-106011: Deny inbound (No xlate) chars

Explanation This is a connection-related message. This message occurs when
a packet is sent to the same interface that it arrived on. This usually
indicates that a security breach is occurring. When the PIX Firewall
receives a packet, it tries to establish a translation slot based on the
security policy you set with the global and conduit commands, and your
routing policy set with the route command.

Failing both policies, PIX Firewall allows the packet to flow from the
higher priority network to a lower priority network, if it is consistent
with the security policy. If a packet comes from a lower priority network
and the security policy does not allow it, PIX Firewall routes the packet
back to the same interface.

To provide access from an interface with a higher security to a lower
security, use the nat and global commands. For example, use the nat command
to let inside users access outside servers, to let inside users access
perimeter servers, and to let perimeter users access outside servers.

To provide access from an interface with a lower security to higher
security, use the static and conduit commands. For example, use the static
and conduit commands to let outside users access inside servers, outside
users access perimeter servers, or perimeter servers access inside servers.

Action Fix your configuration to reflect your security policy for handling
these attack events.

I'm not sure if a cross cable is enough. What about the clock ? If we have 2
DTE cables are we able to generate the clock ? Maybe a DCE cable (for one of
the routers) be the best solution.

If it is just a serial port, you'll need a DCE, and DTE v.35 or something
similar. If it is a T1 rj45 WIC, cross pins 1-4 2-5 4-1 5-2.

RE: WIC to WIC Connection [7:12668]

2001-07-17 Thread Hire, Ejay

If you mean connecting 2 t1 wic's or 2 t1 csu/dsu's, Use a Cat5 cable wired
as follows
Pin 1 Connected to Pin 4
Pin 2 Connected to Pin 5
This will "crossover" the TX and RX pairs and make a t1 crossover cable.
If anybody doesn't have the stuff to make these, I'll make and ship one in
the US for $5.

If you want to connect 2 serial interfaces, then you need a DTE-DCE cable.
These are available from www.pacificcable.com.

You're correct. It will need a DTE and a DCE cable. The part numbers
are CAB-V35MT(dte cable) and a CAB-V35-FC(dce cable).

He need to configure the clock on the interface:

config-if#clock rate 64000

RE: Error in configuring ISDN [7:12611]

The Switch type as defined under the interface is Basic-ni. According to
http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/129/bri_invalid_spid.html this switch type
requires spids.
Additionally, this is an exact copy of the invalid spid example in the Cisco
troubleshooter. http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/129/bri_sh_isdn_stat.html
Not having an Ip address wil cause it not to work, but it won't cause the

Is this in a lab setting with a isdn simulator or with a transport from the

If it's with the phone company you need to put the spids the phone company
gave you into the configuration or you won't be able to dial correctly.

If it's in a lab - I don't know. :(

2001-07-17 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Yepas long as the DLCI's are on different interfaces you're fine.
Inverse arp should take care of the mappings for you but you could play it
safe by setting up some frame-relay map commands. I have this on several
routers and have had no problems so far.

ie:

interface s3/0.100 point-to-point
ip address x.x.x.x x.x.x.x
frame-relay interface-dlci 100
!
interface s3/1.100 point-to-point
ip address x.x.x.x x.x.x.x
frame-relay interface-dlci 100

Can we have two DLCI having the same number on the same router but point

Frame Relay (DLCI) Data Link Connection Identifier
Frame Relay virtual circuits are identified by their data link connection
identifiers or DLCI. DLCI have numeric values that are usually assigned by
the service provider or public carrier. Although they are typically assigned
by the service provider they are only important at a local level as the
service provider are not unique in the Frame Relay network. Also, it is not
unusual for two DTE devices connected with a virtual circuit to use
different DLCI values when communicating on the same connection.

The Switch type as defined under the interface is Basic-ni. According to
http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/129/bri_invalid_spid.html this switch type
requires spids.
Additionally, this is an exact copy of the invalid spid example in the Cisco
troubleshooter. http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/129/bri_sh_isdn_stat.html
Not having an Ip address wil cause it not to work, but it won't cause the
call not to complete.
This configuration doesn't require a dialer interface. It is using legacy
configuration.

The spids are definitely wrong:
>From debug:

>From config:
isdn spid1 0
isdn spid2 0

Is this in a lab setting with a isdn simulator or with a transport from the
phone company?
If it's with the phone company you need to put the spids the phone company
gave you into the configuration or you won't be able to dial correctly.

If it's in a lab - I don't know. :(

You're correct. It will need a DTE and a DCE cable. The part numbers
are CAB-V35MT(dte cable) and a CAB-V35-FC(dce cable).

He need to configure the clock on the interface:

config-if#clock rate 64000

You really have to be more specific for an answer. In general,
though, login is an application level function with management
aspects.

Do you mean synchronization as in who gets to transmit in a
conversation? If so, that's session. If you're thinking of data base
synchronization, that's application.

If there are 100k bits in a second, then the bit time would be 1/100k th of
a second. This may or may not not take into account any overhead as part of

3500 xl switch problem [7:12705]

2001-07-17 Thread Angel

Hello Everyone!

I changed the management VLAN of a 3500 switch thorugh the
browser-based cisco cluster management suite (CMS). By default the
switch IP address belongs to the management VLAN which is VLAN 1. Only
one vLan can be adminstratively active at the same time. By changing to
a newly created vlan I have lost the chance to manage the default vlan.
can't no longer console or access via the assigned IP address.

Thanks in advance if anyone knows anything about this!

Angel
