BGP PfxRcd [7:29331]

2001-12-16 Thread JP

All,

I have three BGP routers learning full table from different ISPs, they are
fully
meshed IBGP peers.
If I do a "show ip bgp summary" on one of the routers:

Neighbor V ASMsgRcvd MsgSent TblVer InQ OutQ Up/Down
State/PfxRcd
10.200.255.22 4 1 3239033 1044612 604463300 1d02h
50645
10.100.255.22 4 1 730890 957516 604463300 20:18:35
59854
157.x.x.x 4 701 44859226 735704 604463100 5w0d
103907

The other two routers have similar output.

All three routers are learning about 103-104K routes from EBGP sessions, I
thought all prefixes learned from ebgp should be forwarded to all IBGP peers
but seems to me they only forward about 50% of these prefixes to their IBGP
peers.

What am I missing here?

Thanks

Re: OSPF network wildcard mask affects redistribution (Bootcamp [7:29335]

2001-12-16 Thread Nigel Taylor

Katson,
Based on what you posted I would recommend looking at the debugs
on R5 as the RIB is built and the IGRP routes are advertised to R4. If it
never leaves R5 for whatever reason then it won't be seen on R4.

There has been a number of discussions on this issue(ospf and mask
implementation) and ospf doesn't care about mask information in building the
local LS database. The use of netmask defined under the ospf process is
only a configuration enhancement which provides a simpler way to configure
multiple interfaces as compared to having to type numerous individual
statements that are local to the router.

Where the mask information does matter is when ospf router hellos are
forming adjacencies in which case this is a mechanism used to confirm the
connected routers are on the same network segment.

The most important thing to remember here is that OSPF is a
"link"(interface) state protocol. All ospf needs to identify is which
interface to implement the protocol so as to discover any other ospf enabled
routers.

Look at you router configs again. Also look at your LS Database "sho ip
ospf data router" and verify that the local router(R5) does know about the
link that you're expecting to see on R4. There is no issue here short of
this being one of those special "features" that cisco sometimes add to
various IOS releases...:->

Otherwise this should work without any problems..

HTH

Nigel

PIM kills OSPF [7:29336]

2001-12-16 Thread Peter Ahremark

Hello group!

I've noticed something weird...maybe I'm missing something. Two routers are
connected via a serial connection, both are running OSPF.

As soon as I activate ip pim sparse-dense-mode on both sides, all the OSPF
routes disappear from the routing-table. The neighbor-adjacancy is still up,
and the database
looks allright (haven't examined it closely though).

If I remove the ip pim sparse-dense-mode (on both sides) the OSPF routes
doesn't come back until I do a clear ip ospf proc.
If I only add the ip pim sparse-dense-mode on wg3r2 the OSPF routes
disappear on wg3r1.

In regards to IOS-versions, wg3r1 is running v12.1(9), wg3r2 is running
v12.2(5) (no T-releases here!)

Why should PIM kill OSPF ? Anybody got any clues? You can see some captures
of the configs below!

Thanx ahead!

/Peter

ISDN Issue [7:29337]

2001-12-16 Thread John Kale

Hi all,

i have a router setup to receive isdn calls from windows clients using TA's.
All the UK clients can connect but the france clients can't. with the debug
isdn q931...i can see RX <- SETUP but my router doesn't answer.
i also see the v120 and low layer compati message. CCO says for me to get
the v120 message means my router can detect v120 encap. i need tips on what
could be wrong and how i can solve the problem.

also sometimes the UK clients dial, connect, get issued an ip address from
my dhcp server(my router) but a windows error message then comes up 'error
xxx: cannot open port' .it takes a reboot of my router to resolve this
issue.

thank you for ur anticipated response(s).

regards,

John

RE: PPTP through PIX [7:28287]

2001-12-16 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

The NAT/PAT feature available in Win 2000 Server RRAS supports PPTP
(GRE + TCP/1723). Inside PPTP clients (rfc-1918 like) can open
connections that are outside RRAS (public).

Are you using NAT ? Save yourself a few hours of study and realize
that
PPTP and NAT don't mix ? Since there is no way to identify GRE and
forward
it to a given end host (at least none that I know of) you cannot use
PPTP to
connect to a PATd box (It may be possibly to PPTP to a statically NATd
box).

Re: ISDN Issue [7:29337]

2001-12-16 Thread Nigel Taylor

John,
My first thought would be to see what would happen if you called the
router
from a regular phone(i.e from france). Does the router answer? We make
use of some
TAs as well and when we were testing out the circuit to verify if the ISDN
switch type
and SPID info given to use by the ISDN provider was correct we just used a
regular pots line

Since your UK office can connect it's safe to assume that your ISDN
configuration
(SPID, switch-type) on the router is correct. Another thought is to make
sure you
have the physical bri tied to a dialer(configured for fracne) so that the
call can be answered.
I'm not sure but this could be a problem if you're using caller-id on any
part of the router
configuration.

Post the configs of the router and any debugs you have of the circuit when
the call is
being received

HTH

Re: 2509 configuration [7:29341]

2001-12-16 Thread Router Man

shawn,

Your configuration looks ok, and this should work. Try Pressing "enter" a
few times when you see this message:

R2509#telnet 10.1.1.1 2001
Trying 10.1.1.1, 2001 ... Open

Also, make sure that your loopback interface is up. It should always be up,
but just make sure using "sh ip int brief". If that is not the problem.
Make sure that your cables are plugged into the console (not the aux) port,
and make sure that the lines you are trying to connect to are the ones that
are connected to your routers. You may have not connected lines 1-5 to
anything, which could give you this message. If all of my suggestions fail,
let me know.

You have both loopbacks on the same network. Try putting one of the
loopbacks on a different network.

CCDA [7:29348]

2001-12-16 Thread Juan Blanco

Team,
I will be taking the CCDA test next Saturday, I am studying the followings
Books from Cisco Press (Top-Down Network Design and CCDA Exam Certification
Guide)..
My questions are the following:

Are these books enough to pass the test and use the knowledge in the future
Will the Boson test help me to verifiy my knowledge before taking the test
Any tips of how to approach all the scenarios without wasting a lot of time
in each one

Thanks for taking your time (I know is valuable) in responding...

Juan, in my opinion they are enough, although it never hurts to practice
with the Boson tests. I think I used #2, #1. Lots of concepts and case

Token Ring Setup Help [7:29351]

2001-12-16 Thread Andrew Michael

Hi everyone.

I'm unsure of which cabling I need to set up a token ring lab. Currently,
I have four ISA Token Ring cards. These cards have an RJ-45 and D-9
connections available. Is there an advantage of using one over the other?
What do the pinouts look like for a token ring network?

Any help greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance.

RE: 2509 configuration [7:29341]

2001-12-16 Thread FRED BADGER

Looks close.

Four steps needed
1.ip address to routable interface ok

2.a route table or default route must be established to direct return path
Telnet traffic ok

3. line configuration of vty password must be performed.

r2509(config)#line vty 04
r2509(config-line)#login
r2509(config-line)#password cisco

not ok

4.an enable password must be applied ok

Good luck

Passed 640-505 Bcran [7:29353]

2001-12-16 Thread Lee James

77 Questions, 90 minutes. Took this exam 12-14. Hardest Exam I have ever
taken. I like that. Not like the mickey mouse MCSE exams where you are in
and out in 15 minutes. Very obscure theory questions. This was my first CCNP
exam, and I'd say the majority of the questions were isdn, DDR, x25. (40%)
Know them inside and out. You will get questions from every chapter from the
book, Used BCRAN book in the CCNP prep library, hands on, and boson exams.
Boson exams are ok, but nothing like the real thing, except for the drop

Re: cisco academy's routing skills final ,tough!!! [7:29212]

2001-12-16 Thread Brian Whalen

I really don't agree that everyone should pass, tho perhaps that was a
wisecrack I didn't see. Inevitably in any class some students try and
some don't. If everyone fails then yes perhaps that is a problem, but
given the material difficulty, I would expect a substantial failure rate.

The RJ-45 connector is for UTP (unshielded twisted pair, also known as IBM
Type 3) token ring wiring systems. RJ-45 Token Ring MAUs (Multistation
access units) are available for these, and you can use standard Cat5
(EIA/TIA 568A or 568B) patch cables.

The DB-9 connector is for STP (shielded twisted pair) or Type 1 (an IBM
nomenclature) token ring wiring systems. IBM 8228 MAUs are available for
these connections. The associated patch cable is an STP cable, DB-9 male to
an IBM Data Connector (it is a connector that looks like it could plug into
itself, also known as Boy George connectors).

There are also cables that are RJ-45 to IBM Data connector, and DB-9 to
RJ-45 (known as media converters)

The advantage of using the UTP wiring system is the ability to use any Cat5
wiring system to connect the token ring stations. The STP wiring system is
typically bulky and considered obsolete today. However, it was also
considered to be more dependable than the Category 3 cabling that was
available at the time the Type 1 system was introduced.

Here is a link to a page with the pinouts for either:

2001-12-16 Thread FREDL L AZARES

Usually you're given a preview of the Hands-On topology with minimal info
and without
full details though. The key to passing is more practice! I simulate the
the hands-on and
provide my own scenario details and configure/run it in the lab. At
Southwestern College,
Chula Vista, CA, a Cisco Academy Regional Center passing rate is 50% for
Sem5/6.
You still have a second chance but will lose 100 points toward your
grade.

Re: cannot ping loopback IP addresses [7:29345]

2001-12-16 Thread Wojtek Zlobicki

How are your loopbacks learning about one another? You will want to
redistribute the information about your loopbacks into a routing
protocol or use static routes. Ideally, I would but the loopbacks into
separate
networks and then advertise those networks via the routing
protocol of choice. I see the network 100.0.0.0 being advertised
but I am not sure as to what it will default (classful or
classless addressing). An output of sh ip route
would be nice.

RE: cannot ping loopback IP addresses [7:29345]

2001-12-16 Thread Baker, Jason

because both of your routers (loopbacks) by your subnet masking to the
router are on the same LAN so when
you try to ping they look at local interface.

Re: cisco academy's routing skills final ,tough!!! [7:29212]

2001-12-16 Thread Priscilla Oppenheimer

It wasn't a wisecrack, but it wasn't very well stated. The final exam
should be a summary of what was taught and practiced in class. It shouldn't
contain surprises or new materials or test new skills that weren't
developed in the course.

The course developer's goal should be that everyone passes. Everyone
passing means the course worked. That doesn't mean that everyone will. In
this particular example, I would imagine that to pass, a student has to
spend a lot of time practicing. Ensuring that is outside the course
developer's control. On the other hand, the course developer could
incorporate lots of labs, practice tests, etc., into the materials. It
sounds to me like the interim tests were multiple choice and the final was
hands-on. That's broken.

A couple on the 700. But nothing to worry about. It was more product
questions rather than set command questins. I looked over the 700 series
chapter briefly, but we dont use any at our remote sites where I work so
didnt put too much emphasis. Learn more then just how to configure x25. Most
of the x25 questions are obscure theory questions and they are relentless
with them. Again, something we dont use at work.

ADSL Configuration with PBI in San Jose [7:29366]

2001-12-16 Thread James Wilson

I have enhanced ADSL service with PBI here in San Jose and have purchased a
1751 with the WIC1ADSL. Do I need any information from PBI to configure
ADSL support? Has any list member in the Bay Area configured ADSL with
PBI? I've seen some sample configurations but do not know if they apply to
PBI here...

Thanks!

Quick thought. Why do you have "transport input none" on the con port of
your target router?

ATM with 7200 and IMA with CES [7:29368]

2001-12-16 Thread Adam Wang

Hi group,

I have a few 7200 with ATM-CES adapters in them. I
want to depoly them over WAN with a 4.5 meg bandwidth
to each. The telco handed to us 3 T1s. I would
assume an IMA device of some kind is needed here.
However, I still want to use the existing ATM-CES
adapters for this case. How would I set this up if I
use a Cisco IMA adapter? Are there any other external
IMA mux besides the cisco's IMA adapter that I can use
with my atm-ces module, and are less than $5000?

I'm new to ATM, so any input would be greatly
appreciated.

Adam

RE: CCIE techniques [7:29251]

2001-12-16 Thread jon kintner

you can always work on the typing speed w/o too much issue, though. I type
105 words a minute, but still have MUCH time needed in the lab at the
routers to learn. bringing up the typing speed should be easy
comparatively (sp)?

A question about virtual token ring interface [7:29370]

2001-12-16 Thread Raymond Cai

Hi, John

I saw you ask the question about usability of virtual token ring interface
several month ago on groupstudy, may I know your findings?

I 'd like to know whether it is possible to connect 1601 and 2501 back to
back with a virtual tr interface at each end and practice RSRB. seems to me
the connection is always closed no matter which encapsulation I use, direct
or tcp. I am not sure whether it is bcos of my config or the virtual tr
interface.

Another question is how come I can assign IP address to virtual tr interface
while using 12.0.20 , but not on 12.2.6.?

Appreciate your help.

Re: A question about virtual token ring interface [7:29370]

2001-12-16 Thread John Neiberger

I never found a use for the Virtual Ring interfaces. To test
DLSw and RSRB configs really requires something to generate
traffic and I only know of a few ways to do that.

First, if you have an IOS that can do APPN, search through the
archives for APPN and you'll find some configs that allow your
routers to be APPN end-nodes. If your DLSw or RSRB configs are
correct, your nodes will connect.

Another option is to have two PCs running NetBEUI. That's
probably the best option if you can do it.

Thirdly, you can use other routers as hosts but this can be
tricky. DLSw was not intended to transport IP but it can if
you tweak it correctly. I have set up SRB with DLSw and tested
it using pings but it definitely can be treacherous. :-)

Good luck,
John

77 Questions, 90 minutes. Took this exam 12-14. Hardest Exam I have ever
taken. I like that. Not like the mickey mouse MCSE exams where you are
in
and out in 15 minutes. Very obscure theory questions. This was my first
CCNP
exam, and I'd say the majority of the questions were isdn, DDR, x25.
(40%)
Know them inside and out. You will get questions from every chapter from
the
book, Used BCRAN book in the CCNP prep library, hands on, and boson
exams.
Boson exams are ok, but nothing like the real thing, except for the drop
down menus.
1 down, 3 to go.

Re: static routes [7:29372]

2001-12-16 Thread Router Man

When your hosts receives the ping, it will try to send a reply back to
destination network 10.2.2.0. The Hosts are connected on a 192.168.1.0
network. Your host should recognize that the destination network 10.2.2.0
is not on its local ethernet segment so it will forward the ping reply to
its default gateway(the hosts default gateway). The host's default gateway
should be 192.168.1.33. Make sure that your hosts have this default
gateway(192.168.1.33) configured correctly. Let me know if this was the
problem

Is there a time limited for taking all the CCNP exams? [7:29375]

2001-12-16 Thread Patrick Zhou

Hi, All,

A friend told me that, if I want to be a CCNP, I should pass all the
CCNP exams in TWO years. Now I'm wondering, is it true? Is there really
such a time duration limitation for taking CCNP exams?

Any answers are welcome! Thanks in advanced!

Can it be that Cisco Routers acting as FR switches never do...
AFAIR they are just not fully RFC compliant.
