Passed CCIE Written [7:30165]
Dear list, I've just taken the CCIE written qualification test and passed. I was queer though that though I thought i can answer most to of them I found the score says the other way around... I want to thank you to each and everyone of you and Lou Rossi (if he's in the list) for making it possible for me. Thank you all. I understand that the written test is a start of something far more difficult, guess no I will shoved myself into more serious studies than I've ever been for the lab. IIFC The Balrog was released from the netherworld when the dwarves mined too deeply. It is a fiery beast that even the orcs fear. It destroys everything in its environment. To destroy it you have to sacrifice yourself. Sure sounds like Bill Gates to me! I understand that Howard likes fine foods. If so, he would be Bilbo Baggins. More BGP fun - aggregate-address attribute-map vs [7:30162]
going through Parkhurst. 1.4 aggregate-address net mask attribute-map route-map name 1.5 aggregate-address net mask route-map name no difference. So what's the point? BTW the CCO command and configurations guides aren't a lot of help here. The command reference is quite sparse, in fact, when it comes to the switches available to the aggregate-address command. There is some slightly better information available on the TAC pages. Ever wonder about code bloat? I gather this is a god example of how it can happen. Today's BGP lesson - what can and cannot be used with the aggregate-address command. using either form - attribute-map route-map OR route-map - one can use the following set comands: community ( and all related switches ) extcommunity ( and all related switches - although I haven't a clue what this does - have not researched it yet ) local-preference ( used only within the same AS ) metric ( suggestion to a neighbor only, the neighbor does not forward it ) origin ( transitive - forwarded from originating router into eternity, so to speak ) weight ( local router only ) someone a while back had a question about commands that show up with the ? - this is a perfect example of not all commands having any effect in all situations, even if they do show up with the "help" I keep wishing someone would do a good book or white paper on route-maps... Re: OSPF into iBGP with Sync [7:30126]
To my knowledge, this is purely a cisco implementation issue and you'd need to look at the code or ask the coders what their particular intention was. OSPF didn't play much of a role in transit networks during the time when synchronization was a relevant option as far as I know so I doubt there was very extensive testing done on this particular feature. I would expect this was just an additional check to ensure route authenticity. Re: DirectTV [7:30136]
I love mine. The only con to it is no reception during really bad weather. It's usually a pretty severe storm with really thick clouds before I lose reception. Make sure you get the receiver with recording so you can record up to 30 hrs of shows ;) BTW I use DirectDish instead but it's pretty much the same service/channels. No internet connections "yet" on mine but I imagine the lag time for going into orbit & back for each ACK could be pretty bad Go for it ;) - Original Message - From: Jeff D To: Sent: Wednesday, December 26, 2001 8:00 PM Subject: OT: DirectTV [7:30136] > I was thinking about doing this, but was curious if anyone knows of anything > better or pros/cons to this: > > http://store.yahoo.com/dialadish/dirtvdsssatt.html > > Cheers, > Jeff Message Posted at: http://www.groupstudy.com/form/read.php?f=7&i=30138&t=30136 -- FAQ, list archives, and subscription info: http://www.groupstudy.com/list/cisco.html Report misconduct and Nondisclosure violations to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Cisco Secure Client to 3620 with dynamic map [7:30134]
I configured IPSec and ISAKMP on the 3620 using a dynamic map. I configure the pre-shared key with the following command: "crypto isakmp key ciscocisco address 0.0.0.0" but it would not work until I specified a specific IP address: "crypto isakmp key ciscocisco address 192.168.1.14" I am running IOS version 12.0 on the 3620 and Cisco Secure Client 1.1. Is this an IOS bug or did I configure something incorrectly. Re: OSPF into iBGP with Sync [7:30126]
the first thing that comes to mind is that OSPF is the only other routing protocol where RID is an inherant part of the structure and the process. as to why this becomes an issue, since RIDs can change based upon reconfigurations and reloads and process clearing, I can see the code getting confused. add a loopback. clear the ospf process, the RID changes, but does not change for BGP because the process is stable. or visa versa. this is starting to tell me that maybe there is a RID routine in the IOS code that both BGP and OSPF reference when starting up. write it off as "cronkite" because "that's the way it is"? not a bug, but a feature? >Sorry, this is totally OT, but STAY AWAY FROM THE MONKEY HOUSE! It's been torn down. > >Just finished Hot Zone by Richard Preston (yes it is actually possible to >read a non-cisco book :-0) Hey...I've worked in Biosafety Level 3 labs. Networking one of them was rather reminiscent of the Andromeda Strain. This was in 1970 or so, so interconnect phone systems were still quite rare. My company was bought by Electronucleonics, which built a large cancer virus production facility in White Oak, Maryland. The computer center was in Bethesda, MD, and we communicated by dialup. Unfortunately, there had been some screwup of dates, and the telco lines were scheduled to be brought in the day AFTER the big open house (no viruses present yet). But we had quite a guest list, and HAD to demonstrate things including the virology data management system. The only line available was on a pay phone. Unfortunately, when I found this out, there was no one at the data center that could change the timeout for connections, which was around a minute. While I was able to connect the pay phone to a pair that took it to my modem, I was now faced with the problem that there were two airlocked pressure levels between the phone and the computer. Someone had to drop in a coin, dial, and yell to me at the first airlock. I'd leap into it, cycle as fast as possible, run across to the next airlock, cycle that, and hope I could log in before the nuclear demolition device (ooops...wrong movie)...the login timed out. It was the most aerobic demonstration I ever did, for a couple of hours. Helpful people would find the phone off the hook and replace it, or try to make their own calls. Eventually, I got someone to go to the computer center and change the timeout to about 5 minutes for the evening. > >Anyway, this is one of the best and scariest non-fiction books I have ever >read. OSPF into iBGP with Sync [7:30126]
We discovered something on the CCIE list recently and I'm wondering if anyone might be able to explain the reasoning behing this behavior. BGP synchronization rules require that if an iBGP peer is to advertise a route learned via iBGP, it must have that prefix *and* the next hop for that route in the routing table already. An interesting added complexity to this occurs if your IGP is OSPF. If the router in question has learned these prefixes via OSPF, then the advertising router ID in the OSPF database must match the router ID of the iBGP peer that advertised the route. Has this behavior caused any problems for any of you? Do you know why the synchronization rules have a special case for OSPF and not other routing protocols? I was working with someone else on a practice lab and we ran into this issue. We were both going nuts trying to figure out why the iBGP routes weren't synchronizing and this turned out to be the cause. Any thoughts? "ip nat inside source" is effectively the same as "ip nat outside destination" when you look at the "flow". Not sure whether that's a good way of explaining it, but it works. Re: IP classless command [7:30056]
The history is like this: In the beginning it used to be that a classful IP address block (such as 170.15.0.0 /16 or 197.100.2.0 /24) was assigned to a particular organization for its exclusive use. If that organization chose to subnet that block, and the organization's routers did not have a route listed for a particular subnet of that block, then a packet for that block would be dropped (even if a gateway of last resort had been configured). The logic being that if your organization doesn't know where that subnet is then nobody does, and thus the packet is dropped. These days, ISPs have possession of various address blocks which they divvy up as needed to their customers. So its absolutely common for the various subnets of a particular classful address block to be split up amongst multiple organizations. So the ip classless command was used to get around this default behavior of the router. Recognizing the changed landscape of IP address allocation, ip classless became part of a router's default configuration starting with IOS version 11.3, permitting packets for any destination not explicitly listed in the router's routing table to utilize the router's configured gateway of last resort. Howard Berkowitz to speak at EveCon 19 [7:30121]
Dear Friends, Howard Berkowitz will be doing a presentation this coming weekend, where he will combine his knowledge of Network Design with his expertise at all things Monty Python. Should be fascinating! EveCon 19 is a Science Fiction and Fact convention, that in addition to several other talks on computer topics (and routing...) has such things as Costume workshops, Chainmail lessons, 24 hour movies on a 180 inch projection tv, and the traditional drummers and belly dancers. Place is the Sheraton Reston Hotel in sunny Reston, Virginia. The convention runs from Friday until Sunday, non-stop. Cost $30. Howard's presentation will be at 3 pm in the Video Room. Re: 2 ISPs, BGP and load-balancing [7:30104]
If you want to get better control of your inbound traffic, you could talk to you ISPs. Some ISPs such as AS701 let you set the local pref and prepending through the community strings. Local Pref = 80 701:80 set localpref 80 Local Pref = 120 701:120 set localpref 120 AS Path prepend 1 701:1 prepend 1x: 701 [cust-AS] AS Path prepend 2 701:2 prepend 2x: 701 701[cust-AS] AS Path prepend 3 701:3 prepend 3x: 701 701 701[cust-AS] You always have better control of outboud traffic since you have full control of your bgp routers, but for inbound traffic tuning the above tool is pretty handy. Parkhurst Ch. 8 first lab not working [7:30115]
All/Chuck Wrapping up my BGP studies and using Parkhurst's BGP book to lab some stuff. The first lab in Chapter 8 (advertise-map) is not working for me. The routes advertise fine until I get to the step of shutting int loopback 0. rtrA retains the secondary route but rtrB is not receiving that route. All of my results follow the examples until this point. I've tried the lab several times and my configs are correct. If anyone has had any luck with this lab or if you could throw it together real quick, I'd appreciate it. It only requires 2 routers and a fairly simple config. My sanity may be at stake. t?t Thanks Chris Message Posted at: http://www.groupstudy.com/form/read.php?f=7&i=30115&t=30115 -- FAQ, list archives, and subscription info: http://www.groupstudy.com/list/cisco.html Report misconduct and Nondisclosure violations to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

RE: Problems [7:30079]
Etherchannel is for trunking between devices at layer-2; HSRP provides a redundant router, and is a layer-3 three thing. That's a gross simplification, but I think is shows that the two technologies are just plain different from each other. Nick's right. Etherchannel will continue to pass data at a reduced rate should one or more links fail (but not all, of course). HSRP will provide an alternative device to route traffic to a separate network segment, should the primary router fail. --- Dennis -Original Message- From: Nick S. Just make sure both PCs are in the same Workgroup (although technically not needed, it again simplifies things). Mike W. Do you have some good links to info about the inner workings of TACACS+? I'd like to read more about exactly how it works. As far as the HSRP, I guess at this point we need to be clear about what we mean when we say "Etherchannel supporting HSRP". Etherchannel does have it's own failover mechanism, so using HSRP between channels in a bundle is not possible nor needed. However, you could have, for instance, multiple etherchannel bundles and run HSRP between them as if they were standard interfaces. The Kid wrote: >Sure enough, I just looked it up and it does support up to 8 ports. >I don't know where I was getting 4 from. Maybe an older IOS version >or something. Thanks for pointing that out. Some line cards and devices only support up to 4 channels in a bundle. If I'm not mistaken, the Cat5000/5500 only supports up to 4 channels in a bundle. I don't know if this is a line-card or Sup limitation. However, from the document I referred to earlier, it seems some hardware supports up to 8 channels and some doesn't. Mike W. Re: 2 ISPs, BGP and load-balancing [7:30104]
Hi, Wow, there are lots of ways to achieve that, you might want to read some material on it, to see what's best for your network. I can think of some ways from the top of my head: 1. just receive all routes from both providers, and let the BGP process decide best on the algorithm. 2. you can use filter-lists like: ip as-path access-list 1 permit _1_ ip as-path access-list 1 permit _701_ ip as-path access-list 1 permit _7018_ ip as-path access-list 1 permit _1239_ to the big backbones, match them separately on routemaps, and play with local pref to achieve the load balancing. 3. you can ask from your ISP to supply you with communities which will be configured on your side also, that will prioritize on your router the routes going to their connected backbones. 4. you can use the bgp command: maximum-paths 5. you can see this link: http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/software/ios122/122newft/122 t/122t2/ftbgpls.htm As you can see, there is allot that can be done. good luck, Yaron ""TMS"" wrote in message [EMAIL PROTECTED]">news:[EMAIL PROTECTED]... > Hello > > I have two 4mbps internet links connected to 2 diffrent ISPs.
