First, have you made sure that all the hello and hold
times are the same on all interfaces on all routers in
the AS.

http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/cisintwk/itg_v1/tr1908.htm#xtocid15

The default hold time is 3 times the hello time. Is
there any reason to not keep this relationship?

I'm going to play with this in my lab this weekend to
verify that all the timers need to be set the same but
I have a feeling that DUAL will get messed up if they
are not.

Network Management Sofware [7:52886]

2002-09-08 Thread Linda & Vaughan Beckerling

Anyone know of some great shareware/freeware or low cost Network management
software. To run on win 2000 server/desktop and analyse traffic flows and
report link state. We host multiple small business WAN's providing remote
office connectivity soutions.

HP Open View is prohibitively expensive and Cisco Works will cost the
company upwards of $2200 and at this price, my CIO would rather purchase
another 1700 router.

We are having bandwidth problems (limited bandwidth via 256k leased line).
Our ISP is implementing a Lucent AP450 QOS box as a managed solution and it
is just compounding the problem. Also, my CIO is concerned that if I
implement an IOS based SNMP solution it will add to the protocol overhead.

For the MCAST+QOS exam you will probably want to look at at

Cisco Press - Beau Williamson
Developing IP multicast networks

Cisco Press - Srinivas Vegesna
IP Quality of service

Syngress - Mike Flannagan
Administering Cisco QOS for IP networks.

Obviously Cisco.com has a wealth of information.

Also, you should study the blueprint for the exam and be aware that the

For the MPLS exam (which I dont have experience of)

You could try

Neal,
I you'll also need to have the crypto maps added to the physical
interface through which the tunnels are built. Paste a copy of the complete
configs without the debug output. However, what I noted seems to be the
only thing that stands out! Watch the word wrap...

Re: IPsec - what is wrong with this config? [7:52865]

2002-09-08 Thread Neal Rauhauser

Since I want the crypto to flow over a tunnel that is where I placed
the crypto maps. I realize that Fa0 on these two machines is the same
subnet, but it won't be when I place one of them in Omaha and the other
in Houston - hence the tunnel structure.

I found the IPsec stuff in the Hutnik & Satterlee CCIE Lab Study
Guide(cool book!) after I learned to do it the hard way - my config
appears correct but doesn't work. I removed the startup-config and I'm
going to go at it from scratch later today.

However, you still have until October 25, 2002 to take the RTING (BSCN)

Keep in mind any monitoring solution using SNMP will add traffic to the

experience with modular QoS CLI [7:52898]

2002-09-08 Thread Tom Scott

Does anyone on this list have experience with modular QoS CLI
in a production network? I'd like to know what issues you deal
with that might help us as we start implementing and testing.
I'd rather stay on a per-device level for now; that's the reason
for using the CLI. As long as we're dealing with only a few
routers, we're willing to take the time to configure each one
separately.

Later we might move to some of the management tools like QDM and
QPM. If you also have experience with those tools, I'd like to
hear the story, the Good, the Bad and the Ugly.

RE: Voice Certification [7:52734]

2002-09-08 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hi all .

There are different roles within voice specialization .
for example i took the track for achieve this two specializations.

Cisco IP Telephony Support Specialist
requirements:CCNP,CVOICE,DQOS,CIPT

Cisco IP Telephony Operations Specialist
requirements:CCNA,DQOS,IPTT(still not taken by me)

And there are other roles focused to design , to Cisco Unity , and so on.

The order from easier to harder , at least for me has been :
easier --- DQOS--->CIPT--->CVOICE ---harder

passing scores.
--
CVOICE:710 pts
CIPT:699 pts
DQOS:720 pts

IPTT (IP Telephony Troubleshooting) exam is the only one remaining to pass

by me , and i wonder if somebody knows something about this exam , and when

can i get supplementary materials to study.

Exporting data from user tracking DB [7:52900]

2002-09-08 Thread David j

Hello,
I'm making a script and I'd need a system to use the User Tracking database
registers, I know that there's a way of exporting the data from cli (that
would be fine for me):
http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/477/Campus/ut_export_data.html
but unfortunatly this only works with Solaris and NT, and I have CW
installed on a HP-UX.
If I could avoid to work directly on the database (via DBI or isql) would be
great. The other option would be use a modified (by me)version of devexp,
but I'm in a hurry and I need to finish the script asap.
thanks for your time boys...
David.

Speaking with the caveat that one should never wager as to what might of
might not appear in the lab, I am convinced that over the next year it is
likely that one will see IP phones in the Lab, and one will need to
configure things such that these phones connect to a Call Manager somewhere.
Lord knows there are enough of them at the Cisco facilities! It would not be
too difficult for the folks at Cisco to make it possible without having to
put Call Managers into the Lab itself.

I think it is pretty well know that sometimes requirements include
configurations as if certain things exist, whether they do or not.

I think it should also be obvious that Lab scenarios are being evolved to
the point where CCIE Labs can be given over remote connections ( such as a
Sylvan test ceter, for example ), rather than having to physically show up
in San Jose, RTP, etc.

Last time I was in the Lab, I found no real reason to even look at the rack
( although I did, for various stupid and wrong perceptions )

Given the published equipment list as it stands today, (
http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/625/ccie/certifications/routing.html#45 )
it would be possible for there to be IP phones. However, and again checking
CCO (
http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/625/ccie/certifications/voice_faqs.html#2 )
at present the only phones are analogue.

Cisco tends to make announcements as to content changes several months in
advance. Until it apears on CCO, all one has is speculation.

That information should pretty much tell you how to prepare.

Re: CCIP Cisco press [7:52878]

2002-09-08 Thread Lars Bucher

hi

to prepare i used the following:

- MPLS and VPN architectures
covers all you need (read all chapters up to and inclusive the ospf
chapter). but you really need to understand the content. the passing score
is quite high (818) and the exam really tough. i'm quite experienced and
found it one of the hardest cisco exams! a colleague of mine, who is ccie
and mpls experienced as well, needed 2 attempts...

- IP Quality of Service
- Developing IP Multicast Networks
compare with the cisco exam blueprint to decide which chapters to read. i
managed the exam with just these 2 books plus the boson test. take care:
it's really a lot of stuff in this exam. also quite tough. but passing score
'only' 720.

both exams will be much harder than the bsci...

i hope you're not too scared now. good luck and cheers
lars

In the first chapter of the CIPT course book there are a number of URLs
of documents including

Cisco IP telephony Solution Guide
Cisco IP telephony Network Design Guides

If you have reasonable internet access and a printer (preferably fast
and full duplex) it would be worth printing them out and reading them.
They contain a wealth of information.

It would also be worth taking a look at the avvid product pages to get
the current specs of the avvid hardware.

If you want to round out your study you could also look at Syngress's
Cisco AVVID and IP telephony design and implementation. It doesnt go
into the detail needed for the exam but does give a great high level
view of the avvid architecture that (at least in my case) really helped
put a perspective on all my other study.

Then that presumably gives some bounds. At the time IP telephones are
added to the equipment list, it might be reasonable to assume
connectivity via the Call Manager, but not the Call Manager itself,
would be part of the lab.

It's probably reasonable to assume that an analog or ISDN simulator
could be present now, so calls between FXS/FXO, E&M, or ISDN ports
are possible.

Unicast flooding on switch ports [7:52907]

2002-09-08 Thread Hitesh Pathak R

Dear Group,

I am having a setup like this :-

cat6k -- cat6k < Coer switches
   | |
   | |
   |  Cat5k| <= Floor switch
   |  Cat5k| <= Floor switch

I am connecting the sniffer on one of my core switches (cat6ks) and without
doing port mirroring (SPAN) able to see the unicast packets flow between 2
Windows NT servers. Does this indicate unicast port flooding ??? or is this
the default behavior of my Sniffer s/w. I am using Network associates
Sniffer s/w. The port where the PC is connected is also in the same vlan in
which the Windows NT servers are connected. Both the Servers are connected
on the same switch. The servers are Win2k.

Has anybody faced a similar problem like this ???

many thanks in advance

Hitesh

RE: IPX and Timers [7:52850]

2002-09-08 Thread Hello Goodbye

I tried to update just one of the ipx eigrp timers and
found the other did not update as well. I'm not
thinking that this can be done in eigrp. I just dont
see how they would ever synchronize in eigrp. With
IPX RIP you can change the update interval and the
time it takes the route to be marked invalid will
update with this. You can change the ratio with the
ipx rip-multiplier command. I have been unable to
figure anything like this out for eigrp. Where did
you read or hear otherwise?

network design results [7:52909]

2002-09-08 Thread John Brandis

First, I wish to thank all of you who contributed to the question of network
design. In particular, I would like to thank Larry Letterman who spent a
fair bit of time, and explained in detail, why he made changes and what
benefits these changes made.

The end result:

Each switch in the network, has a GBIC connection to the core. Originally,
only 2 switch's per floor would have a fibre link to the core, and all other
switch's on that level would "daisy chain" from that. It was put forward to
me, that in the event of a failue back to the core, I could have a potential
problem with STP between switch's. The root switch, would see multiple STP
networks. This could leed to a problem.

Besides that, just simple configuration will get through the implementation
phase. Have trunk links carrying for all VLANS on the switchs. Assign VLAN
membership per port and away we go.

If any one is interested in seeing the final design, please feel free to ask
for the doco. Its really such a simple design.

I had around 20 people willing to help. I wish to thank you, the un-sung
hero's.
