Judging from the fact that Tom's doing VPN, I'd say 'with Exchange.'

I realize that you already have VPN 3000 Concentrator; but, try
Netscreen
VPN, it's lightening fast.

I have a VPN 3000 concentrator installed. When Microsoft Outlook is
launched with the VPN client connection, Outlook is extremely slow. Has
anyone encounter this or have any insight on this. Thanks.

OK, I have a DOS question that really is relevant to Cisco networking (sort
of. ;-) This came up a couple months ago, but I can't find the answer in
the archives.

What is the DOS command to see port numbers (services) in use on a PC?
Someone posted a command that would let you see the list of TCP and UDP
port numbers. One of my students asked how to do this and I remembered that
there was a command, but I couldn't remember what it was.

Thanks,

Priscilla

Check your IOS versions - the earlier versions were buggy (we had the same

the minimum spec. The latest IOS 12.1 IP Plus works just fine. Check CCO.

Compaq also has a free SNMP utility that will allow you to walk the MIB tree
and only query certain devices and is not very resource intensive at
all.it is called CNMS and it is downloadable or usually comes free on
the Smart Start cd-rom if you have access to onealso might want to think
about MRTG.Good Luck!

Knowing that this is not common practice, but I was wondering if it was
possible to connect a "host" (server) to one of the uplink ports on a
switch? Was wondering if there would be any difficulties involved with
this?
Has ayone attempted this uncommon practice? Thanks.

This may seem ridiculous to alot of you, but I am forging ahead with my
question and I sure hope someone can offer me advice or help:

I am finishing up in the cisco academy in mid-month and naturally, we use
cisco press materials. I have been taking these classes for 4 semesters.
I
am taking the CCNA next Monday morning. I feel prepared or so I thought
until
I looked at a Sybex book for ccna today.

It has so much more material in it and is so much more thorough, that I am
wondering what the heck I am doing taking this test Monday morning.
It
has stuff I have never heard of, or considered. I am scared to death.

I have the transcender software and take all the on-line stuff I can get
my
hands on, and I study constantly with the material that I have, but this
sybex
book has thown me for a loop. The stuff I have, I know well, but that's
all I
know. I have never even heard of a 1900 switch until today. In school,
 switches are switches. No specifics.

My question: Is cisco press and transcender enough if you know THAT stuff
really really well??? (I can tell I definately want sybex material for
 ccnp..)

Is sybex just so much better than cisco press that it gives more info than
you
need for future preparations in testing?

 Opinions, advice, critisms...nothing rejected...

 Thanks,

Re: Voice on the Network

2000-12-01 Thread Chris Boyd

Kevin,

I agree totally we have been battling VOIP troubles for a while and
almost from the outset Cisco's advise was upgrade. However, the upgrades
are usually to the ED version on IOSBut in their defense since they are
new to Voice arena they are constantly making changes, so we may not see a
GD series for a while...but we are currently running 12.1.2T ED have had no
problemsin a mixed environment of IP, IPX, and DLSWgood luck!

 Dear Group,

I'm sure some of you must be looking at VoIP for your various
organizations.

For the data side, we have a policy of only using GD for IOS on the
 backbone.

For telephony, you need to have a "T" version of the IOS but no "T"
version
 of the IOS is GD.

When we phoned up Cisco Tac just yesterday they didn't have any insight
into
when a "T" series IOS will be GD.

So, what do you guys think? On one hand Cisco is pushing Avvid et al -
but
on the other hand they don't seem to be supporting IOS sufficiently to
those
of us who like the feel of GD.

Isn't this contradictory? (and you might well ask - what's new..)

VOIP Troubles

2000-11-10 Thread Chris Boyd

All right guys I need some help

I have been working with Cisco for a while
now on a VOIP issue. The problems lies in both call disconnects and voice
distortion. We have followed all the steps for traffic shaping (QOS) and
rtp header-compression but these do not seem to help. We have 150 remote
sites all running 2600's with FXS modules that all come back into the host site
where we have 2 7206's.Each of these links are 56k frame-relay links with
16k CIR running very few applicationsmostly small transactionsand
Citrix clients. The call must then traverse two internal Ethernet
segments, routing through our 6509 backbone switch and then into a 3640 before
hitting the PBX. Cisco seems to think that we need to increase our
bandwidth to support the voice traffic, however, that is not something I have
been able to sell to the "powers that be". We sold this idea on cutting
cost and in our estimations for upping the CIR to even 32k will be significant
cost increase. Right now I am shaping to 16k with an 8kcommitted
burst so at any one time I should be able to burst to 24k. Assuming that I
am able to burst to port speed (56k)why would I have call distortion
unless there is some latencycoming through the ISP's switch? We also have another company site that also comes back in this way
and we have no problems with those calls.O.K. that being said (and
hopefully not too confusing to follow) here come the questions:

1. Has anyone else implemented VOIP in slow
links successfully?
2. Is anyone else having QOS problems with their
VOIP implementations?
3. Do I need to prioritize the voice traffic
through the local network?
4. Has anyone tried turning off traffic
shaping and letting the voice and data compete for bandwidth?

Thanks in advance for your feedback!

Router-based DHCP is often used for home/SOHO environments with NAT
overload to get many machines over a single serial line, especially in
conjunction with, for instance, 'ip address negotiated' on a Dialer
interface. The Inside interfaces generate DHCP using the negotiated
 serial interface.

On a larger scale, other options are much better.

 Not compatible. You can use an NM-4A/S if you don't need faster than 128K;
 otherwise, use two WIC-2T's.

(If you're already using your WIC slots, you can get an NM-2W which will
give you 2 more WIC slots.)

Re: Stuck in ROMMON mode

2000-08-02 Thread Chris Boyd

I might be wrong but I have had this happen before...let the person down
there do it...otherwise more headaches and extended down time.

Thanks,

Subject: Stuck in ROMMON mode

First time posting, so bare with me. Need help with this, I was doing IOS
upgrade to a 3640 remote router. The router was downloading from TFTP
server when it crashed. I am able to do a reverse telnet to if from a
7206
aux port. I can't copy the 3640 IOS software to the 7206 flash, 7206
keeps
disconnecting. I can go from a AS5200 aux to the 3640 console, but it
won't reverse telnet for some reason.

While I'm in reverse telnet to the 3640, I can change the confreg, but
then
it just keeps reloading. Any ideas?
My last option is to have a local person go this morning, download tftp
software and the IOS and try to boot tftp.

We tried to do a remote Xmodem, but it timed out. We will be trying
Xmodem
 locally today.

Re: May I ask you a question?

2000-08-02 Thread Chris Boyd

What routing protocol are you using rip, igrp, eigrp, bgp? If (igrp/eigrp)
on the secondary interface at the customer site add the bandwidth delay
x the router will determine the route

 Dears everybody.

I have a question of configuring my router.
I have 2 leased lines circuits to customer.
I want to use one line as a primary line, the other as a backup line to a
 primary line.
To configure the second line as a backup line, i used "the backup delay,
backup interface serial" interface configuration command.
but, how do i do customer's router?
i will appreciate for your reply.

 Thanks.
