**Shared RAM and Backplane

2001-03-10 Thread Deepak Sharma

Hi

Is shared memory on the 3500XL switches

(*snip from cisco.com)
Shared-Data Buffer
A key attribute of the Catalyst 3500 XL architecture is its shared-data
buffer, which employs 4-MB of DRAM in its initial deployment. The
shared-buffer architecture optimizes buffer utilization through dynamic
allocation across all ports and by avoiding packet duplication for
multicast or broadcast traffic.
(*end of snip)

same as a backplane on 6000 series switches? (eg 32gb)

are they the same idea, but on different scales?

thanks

***Flaws in IOS 11.x and 12.x***

2001-03-03 Thread Deepak Sharma

"Cisco fixes flaw in IOS software"

Cisco Systems said there is a vulnerability in all of the 11.x and 12.x
versions
of its Internetworking Operating System software that could allow an
attacker to
intercept and modify TCP traffic going to and from routers and switches
running
the IOS software. Cisco officials said the company has fixes for all of
the
affected versions and has made them available to all of its customers.

Re: Citrix deployment

2001-02-26 Thread Deepak Sharma

We are currently trying to deploy Citrix with our client software over the net.
Currently my understanding is:

- client LAN/WAN resources are very minimal, but this depends on the type of software
you are deploying
and what type of resources its using. We will be using just a simple database query on
the server side and Crystal
reports writer on the client side. Basically, all you need on the client side is a
browser that has java applet
enabled and just lots of mem. All the processor work is done at the Citrix server.
- We did not increase our bandwidth (currently oc3 with 10MB committed rate)
- We did not be changing our QOS. B/c we have VOIP running and Video/Data running on
our backbone.
We found that it wasn't really needed.
- Watch out of 16 bit apps, its gets kinda flaky from there., Also watch for internally
developed softwareI've
noticed any software that is made by a non software company (Like the one i work for)
always does not fully
test there product before launching it. There might be memory leaks, but the
programmers won't tell you that, until you've restarted
your computer about a dozen times!

I have no experience of Citrix but have already started doing research.
However I am running mainly into marketing - sales blurb about how wonderful
 the technology is etc etc
 Very little real life stuff

What I am looking for is real life Citrix deployment issues (from the
 LAN/WAN infrastructure point of view)

 - what are things to be aware of

 - how important are QOS capability / packet shaping capability
 - what are peoples experience of this

 Look forward to your comments.

Re: Denial of Service question [1:2057]

2001-02-19 Thread Deepak Sharma

Here is what I use:

I place the following commands under the unprotected interface facing the
Internet. The syntax for the command is as follows:

rate-limit {input | output} [access-group [rate-limit] acl-index] bps
burst-normal burst-max conform-action action exceed-action action

The numbers mean the following:

bps
Average rate in bits per second. The value must be in increments of
8 kbps. In the example below, 100 is the average rate in bps.

burst-normal
Normal burst size in bytes. The minimum value is bps divided by 2000. In
the example below, 150 is the normal burst size.

burst-max
Excess burst size in bytes. In the example below, 200 is the excess
burst size.

Here is a practical example of how I like to configure rate limits:

! Allow UDP to occupy no more than 2 Mb/s of the pipe.
 rate-limit input access-group 150 100 150 200 conform-action
transmit exceed-action drop
! Allow ICMP to occupy no more than 575 Kb/s of the pipe.
 rate-limit input access-group 160 496000 55 575000 conform-action
transmit exceed-action drop

! Rate limit (CAR) ACLs for UDP and ICMP.
access-list 150 permit udp any any
access-list 160 permit icmp any any

Security Issues

2000-11-19 Thread Deepak Sharma

1st question

Any security issues with ATM?...i know it kinda acts like a VPN (and
those are pretty secure), but should i be running IPSEC or some other
type of encryption?
3661's latest IOS on a dedicated OC3?/...im thinking what if some1
vampire taps the line??..can they see the data??..

2nd question

I need to hack into my companys router (they want me to attempt
it)...any hacking scripts or holes i should be looking for?..there on a
3700 i beleive with 2500's on the wan for the branch offices...ios
10.0maybe...lol...maybe even lower...

3rd question

We have a checkpoint firewall...most "up to date" software revision (
thats what my boss says, but i dont believe him..lol )...any
holes?...anything i can hack with??...progs and such

thanks..
Deepak

ps. Im not a hacker.i know you all are thinking that...hehehm, also
any links or sites with this type of info would be nice

Re: Need Advise - Cisco AVVID

2000-11-09 Thread Deepak Sharma

Depends on which type of setup you have, try to ask the following questions
to your service provider:
-any type of encryption running on the WAN/ATM ( ipsec, etc. )
-who has access to the WAN link, either OC3, T3, T1, etc( im talking
about the actual physical box where the lines reside...if there outside
the building, watch out for vampire taps, etc )
-ask them what type of telco would take over incase of hardware failure
-are the backup routers and atm cards on site for quick recovery
these are the problems I personally ran into when deploying Lucent/ATM
w/ cisco 3661's across our WAN

Win2k SNMP Traffic

2000-09-06 Thread Deepak Sharma

Ok here's the scenario.

Multiple branch offices,( LAN, WAN slowest 56k and fastest oc3) and
cisco routers from 1900's to 3600's )

PDC, and a whole lota BDC's. NT 4.0 PDC and BDCs; still wanna see the
those computers when I go into network neighbor hood.
BT.Dell is now shipping all there new Pc's with win2k
professional, and refuse to go back to win9x for me. ((
ba*tards))this causes me to have alota headache, cause win2k has
SNMP traffic enabled by Default when we get them...and now I can start
to see all the new win2k machines in network neighbor hood. This is a
problem due to security reasons and management and blah blah blah...and
there's NO possible way I can go, or tell the techy there to go to
disable SNMP traffic on all the new comps!!!I was thinking about
goin to all the branch offices and config. the routers to block snmp
traffic ( port 161 off the top of my head ),

So is there any way i can block SNMP traffic on win2k professional from
the routers..cause i still wanna see the pdc and bdc's.but this
is not too important...I just REALLY need to stop those win2k machines
from appearing on network neighborhood

most networks (small and medium size business/networks) use NT. So mcse is good

if u dident know that sorta stuff, and when u take the ICND courseyou'll get
completely blown away, b/c ICND crams everything in your head for 1 week

Really Obscure Things like IBSYS, EXEC 8, IBM 1130 Disk Monitor,
AHS-11, IBM 360 DOS, PRIMOS, etcyep.

Somehow, I have managed to eke out a networking existence.

No, I dont believe it is highly essential... however, I believe most that
working in the Networking Infrastructure area have been brought up through
 the LAN/Server Administration area.

MCSEs should have a better understanding of the associated Windows
protocols. The same is true CNEs, they should have a better understanding of
the Novell networking model and protocols.

It boils down to experiance not letters or certifications. Just like
anything else, you can work through the Cisco certifications with dedication
and commitment, but experience will make this much easier to relate to.

 I would imagine.

I seem to have created a bit of a stir - and I apologize to both Edgar and
the list in general for my rudeness. I do indeed expect to post questions
[already have in fact] to the list, and I'm always grateful for advice and
 pointers.

On the other hand - and I've already replied to this offline with Edgar - is
it unreasonable to assume a high [and broad] level of networking expertise
from someone billing themselves as a certified Networking AND Design
 Associate?

I'm working on these self-same certifications - and I intend to do it in
such a way that when I have the credentials, I'll also possess the hands-on
skills they're supposed to represent. I could read a book, browse a website,
memorize a few practice exams and very likely breeze through any written
 exam Cisco presents.

To then mis-represent myself as a credentialed networking craftsman though -
would be an insult to every certified individual with the skills to back
them up - and just the sort of behavior that belittles the accomplishments
of those who have come before.

So - I throw myself upon the mercy of the court - and plead guilty for
 lobbying for truth in advertising.

I don't have much time to respond to this one due to a large looming
 project, except...

 1) Drew seems to have a nasty non-helpful attitude, and if you (Drew) post
to the list asking any questions, I hope you are greeted with an equally
sarcastic and immature response as yours.

 2) Edgar, I would recommend that you at least try something before posting
something like where do I start. I think this list is more I have tried
something and it doesn't work, or I have this situation, and what are your
recommendations. MOST everyone will give you great advice and
recommendations when you approach it this way. Except for a select few, and
you have to expect that from any list. :-)

 Friends,

I have a Cisco 2505, laptop on Win98, and a desktop with Linux
6.2 and I will like to connect them.

I have a PCMCIA ethernet LAN card for the laptop, an ethernet
LAN for the PC with cables all around.

The objective is to learn Cisco router configuration and
 Linux/Win98 TCP/IP operations.

Anyone want to volunteer to instruct me to put all the pieces to
together over the coming week or so?
