Look into Dennis Laganiere's and Brad Ellis' Study Guide for the CCIE
written. I got a deal on it through Amazon.com. Laganiere makes a good
 search term.

Check out Dennis Laganiere's website, too. www.laganiere.net I am amazed
how much advice he gives away. As someone who is almost finished with a
book of advice and learning labs, I can say that the amount of advice he
gives away for free convinced me that I could not write a little book with
just advice about preparing for the CCIE. Thus, the advice is a small
part
of my book, and the scenarios and explanations of the scenarios are the
 major part.

Thanks, Doug, for making me work harder.

 Hey Everyone,

We will be moving the mailing list function to a new server. If you are
currently receiving this list via e-mail, you will be affected. This
has been planned for some time now but we need to move faster then I
would like. I just received a bill from our co-location facility for
the GroupStudy service and let's just put it this way, in most locations
rent on a two bedroom apartment is less expensive. So we need to try
and reduce our bandwidth usage (an eventually find another co-location
 facility).

It has been quite clear for some time now that the GroupStudy server
needs help. We are dropping an unacceptable number of messages (I
personally have had five in a row discarded) and the messages that make
it take a random amount of time to propagate. To fix this, I have
purchased a new server and bandwidth (at a lower cost facility). We
will be migrating to the new server in the next few days. Once the move
is complete we will cut over to the new server.

But wait it gets better .. We are dumping majordomo as our list
software! Our new software will allow you to change a number of
options. For example you will be able to suspend distribution of the
e-mails, receive e-mails in digest format, change your e-mail address,
 etc.

You will receive a welcome message with your account information. The

message will contain your username/password, instructions on how to
login to the server, and instructions on how to unsubscribe. Please
save this e-mail for future reference. It is also a good idea to login
to the server and set your password to something more memorable then the
 random password given.

If you stop receiving e-mails from the list after the change, please
send me an e-mail (after verifying it is not a problem at your end such
 as misconfigured anti-spam software etc.).

 Take care,

 Paul Borghese

New CCNA tracks [7:71256]

2003-06-24 Thread Dennis Laganiere
I haven't seen anything about this before, so I thought I'd share an article
from CertMag

Cisco_PolishesCisco Polishes CCNA Certification
Cisco Systems will announce several enhancements to the Cisco Certified
Network Associate (CCNA) program tomorrow, June 24th. CCNA, Cisco's most
popular certification, was introduced in April 1998 and is the entry-level
certification for the Cisco Career Certification Program. It requires
base-level knowledge of IP networking and troubleshooting. Enhancements to
the CCNA program include a new two-step exam path, revisions to content and
a new recertification option.

Candidates will now have two paths to approach CCNA certification: a
single-exam path that includes exam #640-801 (which will be available June
30th) or a two-exam path that includes exam #640-821 (Introduction to Cisco
Networking Technologies, or INTRO) and exam #640-811 (Interconnecting Cisco
Network Devices, or ICND).

RE: Simple config issues [7:70482]

2003-06-10 Thread Brian Dennis
Do you have a route to x.x.x.x? If your router does not have a route to
x.x.x.x it will not install the static route in the routing table since the
next hop is unreachable. As far as RIP goes you are seeing the correct
behavior. Remember that RIP is classful.

RE: OSPF over FR [7:70025]

2003-06-05 Thread Brian Dennis
You can not mix point-to-point and non-broadcast network types which is
what you are trying to do. You can make them neighbors but they will
never install routes into the routing table. Look at their OSPF
databases and you will see the LSA's but the routers will not install
them in the routing table. Also note the Adv Router is not-reachable
error message above each LSA.

Network types that use a DR (broadcast and non-broadcast) can be mixed
together just as network types that do not use a DR (point-to-point and
point-to-multipoint) can mixed but DR types can NOT mix with non-DR
types.

Re: 2 different CCNP certifications [7:66547]

2003-03-31 Thread Dennis Laganiere
It depends on how strong (and or overconfident) you are. If you REALLY know
all the material, than the Foundation is a nice shortcut. It's quite a bit
more expensive than the other exams, but cheaper in total (if you pass); and
if you pass, you're through in one test session. The problem is, if you blow
one part of the test, you blow it all.

For most people (myself included) taking the separate tests allows you to
compartmentalize your studying - study switching for a few weeks, and take
the test; study remote access for a few weeks, and take the test; etc.
Unless you've got BGP running through your nervous system all the way to
your ASs, than I would go the multi-test route.

Just my $.02

Since I just recently passed my CCNA I thought I would continue on up the
ladder. In looking at the CCNP I see there are 2 ways to get it.

 1. Take the BSCI 640-901, Switching 640-604, Remote Access 640-605 and
 Support 640-606 exams.
 OR
 2. Take the Foundation exam 640-841 (combination of the BSCI, Switching
and
Remote Access exams) and the Support 640-606 exam.

What is the difference and what is proffered?

Subject: CCIE written RS [7:65972]

To All the CCIEs out there:

 I'm a newbie to CCIE...:-)
I'm currently trying to prepare for my written Exam
And honestly it's very puzzling and scary

These are the books that I have read so far:

 LAN switching, Clarks
 Routing with TCP/IP I, Doyle
 Internet Routing Architecture, Sam Halabai

I fear that the above books are not enough. I'm also going to read every
last one of the Cisco recommended links.

I was wondering if you could please tell me:

 1) What book do I use to study for IP Multicast, QOS, and Multiservice.
 2) What should I focus on the most (Especially For those of you who
 recently took the exam)
 3) If I need to buy more books

Thank you all very much in advance for your response.

I spent several months last year updating everything to the new blueprint
(as I'm sure every other author did), and I think it's now representative of
what's out there. That said, the new exam is much toughter; you're lucky you
passed the old one. Make sure you don't let your status slip... :-)

A default route, aka a route of last resort. For BGP, route to the next
hope must be explicitly in the routing table. This is one of the
pre-reqs
for BGP to advertise its own routes as well (unless you have
synchronisation
turned off).

In my deployments of BPG, we alway suse the loopbak interface for iBGP
peers
as this is already distributed using our IGP, and then use the interface
address of the peering routing for eBGP, with a atatic route to that IP.

Good old bgp :). Right now lets spark of some discussion about the
security
of BGP peering :)

There is only one test, but it covers all the materials from the four CCNP
exams. You could use whatever study material you used the first time
around, but keep in mind the tests have evolved in the last three years, and
there are some new topics. Here's the link on the Cisco website:

http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/10/wwtraining/certprog/testing/current_exam
s/640-851.html

I've been studying the various topics, and started putting together a
practice exam for Boson. It should be released in the next week or so, but
please keep in mind it will be in beta for a while, shaking out the bugs and
adding new material.

I hope that helps...

RE: Pinging a Multicast address [7:65132]

2003-03-12 Thread Brian Dennis
John,
You can look into using Multicast Routing Monitor (MRM). Here is a
working config.

R5
ip mrm manager myTest
 manager Ethernet 0/0 group 226.2.3.4
 senders 1
 receivers 2 sender-list 1
!
access-list 1 permit 161.1.45.4
access-list 2 permit 161.1.127.1

R4
interface Ethernet0/0
 ip address 161.1.45.4 255.255.255.0
 ip mrm test-sender

R1
interface FastEthernet0/0
 ip address 161.1.127.1 255.255.255.252
 ip mrm test-receiver

R5
mrm myTest start

Basically you configure a manager, multicast test sender, and multicast
test receiver. In this case R5 is the manager. R4 is the multicast
sender and R1 is the multicast receiver. Look at some of the show ip
mrm commands to see the results.

This can also be used in the real world to monitor a real multicast
stream. The config is essentially the same except the multicast test
sender isn't needed.

Ahhh, but cats are better because dogs won't try and sit between you and
your monitor; on top of your monitor swinging their tail in front of it; or
lay with all their body weight on your mouse-hand, do they? Oh wait...
those aren't good things, are they - never mind...

At least cats sleep alot, and they generally leave you alone while their
doing that, right?

Just believe me, cats are better...

RE: Certified Cisco System Instructor (CCSI) [7:64319]

2003-03-03 Thread Brian Dennis
In order to become a CCSI you have to be sponsored by a Cisco Training
(Learning) Partner.

In today's market there aren't a lot of jobs, if any, for CCSIs. I would
estimate that about 50% of the CCSIs I know aren't teaching authorized
Cisco classes anymore. All the good CCSIs I know are off on there own
consulting or teaching private classes.

Unless someone can teach a ton of Cisco classes right off the bat (MPLS,
CVOICE, CWFUN, MCAST, etc) I would be very surprised if a Cisco training
partner was willing to sponsor someone new.

FTP site needed for MPLS for 2500 files [7:63054]

2003-02-14 Thread Dennis Laganiere
A few months ago I put together a free document for loading an experimental
version of IOS that allows you to run MPLS on cheap 2500 series routers. I
didn't create the software, I just gave instructions for installing it and
then pointed out where the files were, for anybody who wanted to play with
it.

Since then the ftp site where the files were posted keeps deleting them (not
surprising, since I didn't ask permission)... Is anyone running an FTP
server where the files can be posted for anybody who wants to play with MPLS
to be able to pull them down? Think of it as contributing to the common
good of the group (or rather, groupstudy)...

Let me know. Thanks...

Re: Blown Away By The New CCIE Written [7:62396]

2003-02-04 Thread Dennis Laganiere
The Bruno book is just a place to start. It will at least give you an
introduction to each of the topics...

I would recommend reading both of Doyle's Routing TCP/IP books, Sam Halabi's
Internet Routing Architectures, Caslow's Cisco Certification, as well as a
good MPLS book.

I'm the author of one of the Boson exams for this test (which means I have a
bit of an agenda), so I think those are useful too...

I also put together a fairly basic study guide for this exam that you can
download from www.cramsession.com (but you have to really look around to
find the free version)...

Lastly, I put together a bunch of free material at www.laganiere.net

I hope that helps give you a place to start getting ready for a second
attempt. As hard as the qualifying exam is, trust me, the lab is much
worse...

Has anyone taken the new format of the written test? I just got my head
handed to me. Needed a 58 to pass and got a 47. I definitely studied the
wrong material. I thought the test would emphasize OSPF, BGP, WAN and the
basic Routing Protocol interaction. Boy was I wrong. 75% of the test was
Multicast, IPX, Token Ring and QoS. I studied QoS pretty well, but
slacked
a bit on Multicast and totally wrote off Token Ring or IPX. Ooops$300
down the drain. Anyone else have a similiar experience? As far as what I
used, I thought the official CCIE RS Exam Cert. Guide would be enough.
Uhh, that's a big NO! Bruno and clan don't even cover half of what was on
this test. Anyone else recommend something different for next time?
Should
I just say No to all books and print out all the links on the Exam
blueprint
page? I think that's what I'm going to do this time, oh, that and
 concentrate on useless protocols.

Re: Richard A. Deal Books [7:62027]

2003-01-29 Thread Dennis Laganiere
Having written one book and a bunch of web content, I can tell you that
(IMHO) it's great to be able to keep updating and tinkering around with what
you've done. Once something is printed on the page, it can haunt you
forever - electronic documents, on the otherhand, can evolve over time to
become better and better...

I don't know if this is univerally true, but the best thing about writting a
book for me was to be able to say I wrote a book... Getting a pat on the
back from your mom, being able to send copies to a few old friends,
monitoring the comments on Amazon, and getting e-mail from people who said
it was useful; those were are the highlights for me. The actual process of
writting is always painful, and that big a project can seem to take forever.
That said, I'd do it again if I found a topic that interested me enough to
spend four or five months buried in it...

Just my $0.02

specific figures, but a ballpark figure would be interesting.
  Thanks!

They don't pay you to write the book, but they do pay you royalties on the
sales. So, how much you make depends on how well the book sells.
Regardless,
though, it's only a few dollars per book. We don't do it for the money. We
do it because we have a lot to say! :-)

The publisher gets most of the money made on sales. They incur costs
printing the book, of course. They also incur many other costs.
Personally,
I think that they incur a lot of costs that they shouldn't. They redraw
our
figures, with the end result looking exactly the same except with numerous
errors; they edit the material, with the end result being incomprehensible
sentences in some cases; they layout the book pages, wrecking the flow in
 many cases, and so on.

Some publishers, rumor has it, are trying to streamline this and are
letting
authors work with a WYSIWYG template that requires less messing with by
 non-technical people.

People often complain about the quality of books. Someone said it was
because it's easy to get a book deal these days. That's not true. (Maybe
it
was true during the boom?) The quality problem is due to the processes
currently in use for producing books.

I think Web-based training materials are much better in many ways. Now, I
have done some work for CertificationZone, so I'm a bit biased, but I
loved
what they said in a recent e-mail about the advantages they have over
books
(more up-to-date, more accurate because they can more easily fix any
errors,
more interactive with color graphics, etc.)

I'm enrolled in Cisco's CCNP Network Academy program and just completed
their Multi-Layer Switching curriculum last semester.

In their online curriculum, they refer to two flavors of switches: Set
 Based and IOS Based

In Cisco's Network Academy online curriculum universe, Set Based
switches
are switches which use set commands, e.g. 4000 6000 series switches.
IOS
Based switches don't use set commands, e.g. the 2900XL switches.

However, if you look at Cisco's CCNP Switching book by Hucaby, et al.,
 they make the following distinction:

IOS-based commands (found on CAT 1900/2820, 2900XL, and 3500XL) are
similar
to many IOS commands used on Cisco routers.

 Set-based, command-line interface (CLI) commands (found in 2926G, 4000,
5000
and 6000) use set and clear commands to make changes to the configuration.

Re: Simple Question [7:61830]

2003-01-25 Thread Dennis Laganiere
CLI is simply the Command Line Interface, meaning you are given a prompt to
enter commands at. Set- and IOS-based CLI's appear on different families of
switches. There is a third category of switches that are configured through
menu choices.

I've already posted this, but in case it doesn't make it back to the
original author of the thread - I tried to answer this question by listing
which models of switches use which CLI, and provide a sample configuration
for each. You'll find this free document at www.laganiere.net, please let me
know if you find it useful...

 I have a simple question.

I am confused about hearing about these three things:
 1) IOS-BASED SWITCHES
 2) CLI-BASED SWITCHES
 3) SET-BASED SWITCHES

Now, can somebody very accurately classify what these mean and categorise
the common switches into the three groups?

Im not even sure if there are 3 groups or only 2. If its 2, then it means
that two of the above groups mean one and the same.

 Thank You

 John,

This is most likely due to the fact that you have a dynamic
access-list configured, yet the dynamic list is not applied to that
interface. Once you have the 'access-enable' command defined, telnet
on
tcp 23 is used exclusively to authenticate.

 Try something like this:

 line vty 0 3
  autocommand access-enable host timeout 20
 line vty 4
  rotary 1

Now the router will listen on TCP 7001 for actual telnet traffic
 to the CLI.

 John,
By default packets sourced by the router will not be affected by an
outbound ACL. Since the outbound ACL does not see the telnet traffic
sourced by the router, the router does not add an entry to the inbound
ACL to allow the traffic to return. Try telneting from behind R5.

RE: hsrp isl trunking [7:57896]

2002-11-26 Thread dennis cherry
The way we have it is 2 routers connected to the 4000 switch with 4 vlans on
the switch. Have set up 4 subinterfaces on each router, 1 for each van. Each
with a separate ip address corresponding to the vlan number. We have 2 HSRP
groups set up with 2 vlans in each group. 1 router will be the active for 1
group (2 of the vlans) and the other router will be the active for the other
group (2 vlans). On each subinterface for each router for each vlan, it has
a unique virtual HSRP IP address. I originally thought that all would use
the same virtual HSRP IP address. You are saying that there should be 4
groups (1 for each vlan) instead of the 2 groups that we have?? Or is it OK
with 2 groups and the 4 unique virtual HSRP IP addresses on each router??

This type of setup wasn't covered together in our class, just vlans and HSRP
seperately. But in this lab we have Vlans running thru HSRP router doing ISL
trunking and the routers are also running BGP and EIGRP to connect to a
remote router. AHHH!

Thanks for your help.

2002-11-24 Thread Dennis Laganiere
I posted a free document at www.laganiere.net that has sample configurations
for each of the different types of switches so you can see how the CLI
works. Other then that I can only recommend reading the Sybex book, and
working through the Boson sample exams.

Good luck...

hsrp isl trunking [7:57896]

2002-11-22 Thread dennis cherry
In my Cisco Academy class, we are doing an lab with a lot of different
topics rolled into one lab. We have 2 routers set up with hsrp and has a
virtual ip address. Now a 4000 switch has 4 vlans configured on it and to
use isl trunking to the hsrp routers. These routers have 4 subinterfaces on
the fastethernet port going to the switch (one subinterface per vlan on each
router). On the 4000 switch we set up a default gateway to the hsrp virtual
ip address. But on the hsrp routers when we set up the subinterfaces and
enter the standby command for the virtual ip address, I thought that we use
the hsrp virtual ip address but the instructor says no. She says we need to
put in the vlan number as part of the virtual ip address. Example:
subinterface number for vlan 20...Fa0/0.20, ip address...10.200.20.2,
standby ip address...10.200.20.1. And for vlan 30 it would be 10.200.30.1
for the virtual ip address. I thought that all subinterfaces would use the
same hsrp virtual ip address. I tried to find more info on the Cisco site,
but could not. Is this actually correct?? Why would the virtual ip address
be different for each vlan??

 Team,
This morning I was able to pass the DQoS test, wow...what a rideThe
test
is very hard if you don't have
the Course Book and the reason is because all the information need for the
test is very well put and organized by the course. All the information
required for the test is on Cisco's web but is very hard to find it, the
test follow the blueprint by the book. I want to give my special thanks to
Chuck Larrieu (The Long and Winding Road) for his support. I really
recommend this test for those who are in the process of taking the lab.
The

find all the information need for this test except the Course Book (fully

MPLS on 2500 - Success (so far) [7:56058]

Switching VTP [7:55438]

2002-10-11 Thread dennis cherry
I'm in semester 7 of the Cisco Academy program and one subject is not clear.
This is the VTP revision number that is sent out between switches. Normally
the number increments to indicate the most current information to that
switch. And when you are introducing a used switch into your network you
have to reset the number to 0.

That's the sticking point, how to reset it. The official academy text say to
power cycle the switch to reset the revision number. A student who works
with these says the same. But on the Cisco web site it says to change the
domain name and then change it back to reset the number. The Cisco Press
certification guide says to change the mode to transparent then to server.
Or it says to change the domain name and change it back. Or it says to issue
the CLEAR CONFIG ALL command (on set based switches) to clear the VTP info
and the revision number.

Also, when you issue the command SHOW SPANNING-TREE on a 4000 series switch
it gives a listing of the different ports and information about those ports.

EXAMPLE: INTERFACE FA0/1 (port 13) in spanning tree 1 is FORWARDING

My question is, what is the (port 13) to mean?? The actual port on the
switch is port 1, not 13. Each interface has a number that seems to
increment but INT FA0/12 is (port 25) where if they incremented correctly it
would be (port 24). The info says it's a designated port. What??

You're right about the IS-IS part. Our instructor in my BCMSN class brought
that up just last week. Also for the new exams, there are simulation and
drag and drop type questions. On my BCRAN exam, there was even a question
where I had to enter the commands to configure frame relay. Some questions
give you a list and you have to pick the command, some you just have to know
as you get no list.

RE: simulations questions [7:53662]

It depends on the pool of questions that you get. On my BCRAN exam, I had 1
drag and drop, several that gave a list of commands and you had to pick from
those to answe the question and 1 where I had to cofigure frame relay on the
fly. Others have said that they had more of the drag and drop type and less
of the others. Some say they had more of the configure type questions. Best
to be prepared for all situations. If you know the material, it will be easy.

Re: New CCIE written [7:52717]

2002-09-05 Thread Dennis Laganiere

If you take a quick look in the group archives at www.groupstudy.com you'll
find several months worth of comments about it, but basically they dropped a
few older technologies, added a bunch of new ones, upped the number of
questions, and ratcheted up the level of the questions. It's much harder,
but I think it's more relevant and does a better job of getting you ready
for the lab.

I wrote a free study guide for the exam last month that is posted at

FW: RE: CCIE qualification Exam, misconception? Lo [7:52235]

2002-08-30 Thread Dennis Laganiere

I've spent the last three months updating Cramsession, Boson and Quizware
test preparation materials, so I've been buried in this for a while now. I
would definitely agree that the new blueprint is much harder then before;
and I think Bernard's suggestion about preparing as if for the lab is a
great idea.

I would, however, like to offer a slightly different perspective on this.
Many people who passed the old written exam were nowhere near ready to face
a lab attempt. From this point forward, the people enter the lab for the
first time will be in a better position to pass; and that might save you
time and money in the long run. I feel like what you need to know for the
new written is more relevant, not just for the lab, but in the real world at
work as well.

Perhaps I'm just being overly optimistic, but I don't see this as a pure
negative... Just my $.02, let's see if I'm just as well-disposed after I
spend the long weekend writing test questions on QoS... :)

Thanks all, and good luck with your studying. Please let me know if I can
do anything to help...

Yes I talked to Dennis for Boson #3 and he is updating his version weekly.
It's nice to know that I don't have to purchase it again down the road.

Does Boson 4.0 provide good help on the new ccie written.
Or do we have to wait for a newer version of Boson ?

FW: New CCIE Written Exam [7:50946]

2002-08-08 Thread Dennis Laganiere

It's a weird time right now because there isn't much out there yet. Your
right that I updated the free cramsession.com study guide; I've also updated
Boson #3 and I've got a new practice test coming out on Quizware.com in the
next few days. I'm sure everybody else is updating their stuff as well. In
a few months there should be lots of stuff, but right now you're caught in a
transition.

I'm up to my neck in this stuff because I've been updating all my materials
over the last few months, and that's going to continue for a while as I
continue to grow the question databases. If there are a number of people
getting ready for the new exam, we should start doing something together;
either here on groupstudy, at @!#$.com or off-line. I've been doing a
lot of work with my router pod recently to create troubleshooting and
configuration questions, and would be glad to help out.

Let me know if I can help...

Are there any new study guides or practice tests out for the new exam yet? I
see that Dennis has updated his study notes but I have not been able to find
any other updates than what is on Cisco's website which do not tell you
much. I took the old exam on the 6th and I scored a 58 percent. I was not
really ready to take the exam but thought I would give it a shot before it
was retired. I know some on this forum have taken the beta of the new test
and wanted to know what new items do you need to know in addition to the
items tested on the old test.

just getting into it. 1500 pages of documentation to read :-O

They do IGRP, EIGRP, RIPv1, RIPv2, and OSPF. Don't believe the output of
 the
 router ?

BGP is expected to be released real soon now, but according to Cisco
people I've spoken to, it will not be a full featured release.
 Limitations
as to the number of routes processed and stored, for example ( due to the
physical limitations of the switch ) I.e. don't expect to get full BGP
 routes over your DSL connection.

The CCIE Program is proud to announce the upcoming release of the revised
CCIE Routing and Switching Written Exam (350-001). The new version of the
exam will go live, and replace the current exam, on August 7th, 2002. Note:
The revised exam will consist of 150 questions and be 180 minutes in
duration. To prepare for this exam, candidates may wish to review the exam
blueprint and study suggestions.

Fw: Re: Boson CCIE Tests [7:49121]

2002-07-18 Thread Dennis Laganiere

I don't think it's fair that I be excluded from commenting... I usually try
and stay out of conversations that I have a vested interest in; but here
goes...

I think there are a lot of very useful tools to prepare for this exam, and
if I were preparing to take it I would avail myself of several of them. The
subject matter is both broad and deep. Shawn Kaminski has talked about a
project he's developed that people say good things about; I think Bernard's
Boson #1 is very good, and of course I'm particularly fond of Boson #3, but
I'm hardly impartial about that... :)

On my website I posted several free documents to help with some of the more
problematic topics; and I put together a list of common wisdom CCIE Written
exam preparation from the groupstudy archive. You can get access to them at
www.laganiere.net. You can also grab the free study guide at
www.cramsession.com; it's fairly superficial, but it will give you a place
to start. You'll also find a list of corrections to it on my website...

Lastly, I would look up every topic from the blueprint on both the CCO and
the groupstudy archives. They're really great free resources...

I hope this proves useful, and please let me know if I can do anything
further to help...

RE: Mac Layer access list [7:48324]

2002-07-08 Thread Dennis Laganiere

My intention is to buy an Aeronet 1200, which I believe will have much of
this functionality built in. For the initial testing I'm using an old
Lucent (Orinoco) access point that I had in my desk from the last time I
played with 802.11b two years ago. Since I've long since lost the cable and
documentation I haven't been very successful getting a console session to
make any changes (if anybody knows the cable pinout and console settings,
let me know). I can easily filter based on static IP addresses, but MAC
addresses would be better because it would make it that much more difficult
to hack.

By the way, even once I get the Areonet AP, the principle security tool is
128-bit WEP. The problem here is that WEP only offers encryption, not
authentication or other security features; and It's already known to have
been hacked - so the access list would still be nice as an extra layer of
security.

As others have pointed out, having your upstream router act as a bridge is
your best bet. Out of curiosity, what brand of access point is involved? If
you haven't yet, you may want to see if the vendor has an updated firmware
available for download that includes the option for the AP to filter by
source mac.

 Hi Dennis,

Iam preparing to take the written exam very soon (before the new format is
taken). I have posted this question to the group (Groupstudy) but I would
realy like to have your advice.
I have studied the following books:

 - Routing TCP/IP, Vol. 1, by Doyle
 - Cisco LAN Switching (CCIE Professional Developement Series) By
 HamiltonClark

 - Cisco Certification, Roures Bridges Switches for CCIEs, by Caslow

I was just wondering wether these books were enough for the written exam
or
not. I have the Sybex CCIE study guide available as well (borrowed it from
a friend). But personally I don't like Todd Lammle's books because he
explains even simple topics too much and that makes me sick of it !!!
Well I will be using Boson's #3 test as sample tests. Could you please
 give me your advice?

 Thanks,
 Hamid

 Hi Group,

I've just finished my CCIE Written today after studying for two months.
I need some advice as to how to start my CCIE lab study. I am not sure
where
or how to start. I have most of the routers I need for my lab. Could
someone
shed some lights as to what is the most effective way to go about this
 journey.

802.11a [7:47594]

2002-06-27 Thread Dennis Laganiere

I've been reading about the new, faster wireless solutions. Is anybody's
802.11a technology ready-for-prime time? I'm ordering a Aironet 1200 access
point to play with, and it should be capable (with the right antenna), but I
understand Cisco's product is not out yet... Anybody know anything about
the new a standard?

Thanks...

RE: 802.11a [7:47603]

2002-06-27 Thread Dennis Laganiere

There are several good write-ups on the technology on the CCO, so I knew
that; but I was looking for an actual product to play with to determine if
the 5 MGHz traffic interferes with other systems in my manufacturing group
(a major concern). Cisco's Aironet 1200 access point has the capability,
but it looks the antennas and NICs aren't out yet. D-Link has a fully
functioning set-up I can use for my initial testing.

RE: 802.11a [7:47606]

2002-06-27 Thread Dennis Laganiere

Several people sent me some excellent links. Thank you all...

Here's what I ended up with...

Cisco - The Aironet 1200 access point can be configured to support any of
the standards, but they only have 802.11b available right now.
NetGear - They have 802.11b and 802.11a access points, but nothing that will
do both, which means losing all my current investment in NICs.
D-Link - They have an access point that does both.

I went ahead and ordered the D-link access point and a couple of NICs so I
could start to play right away; and I'll upgrade to the Cisco unit once
they have a real product offering...

Thanks all, you guys are great...

By the way, if there are any Cisco people on the list who would like to put
me on a beta list, I'm open to it... :)

As a last note on this topic, I checked Orinoko just to make sure. That

For my current needs I can live with a fork lift upgrade when 802.11g comes
allong. So far I'm only out about $350 for the D-link access point that
supports both b and a. It will serve as a stop gap tool until the Cisco
solution is ready for prime-time. Other then the wait, I completely agree
with you...

 HOLD OFF FOR 802.11G!!
It runs on B's freq (so you get b's distance), you get a's speed (54mb)
and
is backward compatable with b clients.

I HIGHLY expect 802.11a to quietly go away.

Fw: CCIE home lab [7:46395]

2002-06-13 Thread Dennis Laganiere

I put together a free document with accumulated list wisdom on starting lab
preparation on www.laganiere.net, but just off the top of my head -

1) You only need one terminal server, and the 2511's sell well on ebay, so
I'd keep the better one, and sell the other to raise cash to buy some of the
other things you'll need.

2) If you're planning to take the exam before October, keep the 5k,
otherwise sell it and get an IOS-based switch (as of today).

3) Unless you're planning to take the exam before October, forget the TR
stuff (as of today).

4) You definitly want something with more then four serial ports so you can
do frame

5) It's great that you have the 2503's, but get an ISDN sim (remember that
you might need NT1's)

6) Max the memory out on the routers and load up the most feature-rich
current IOS you can find.

Voice and ATM can be done on-line cheaply enough. At that point, you've got
a great pod, and can do most anything. I'd only suppliment it as you start
doing labs and see that you need specific things.

I hope that helps...

Re: CCIE RS written update [7:46373]

2002-06-12 Thread Dennis Laganiere

I don't believe Cisco has announced when the old version will go away, but I
think the common wisdom among the people who have taken the beta is that it
is much harder. If you're close to ready for the exam, now is a good time
to get in study mode and be done with it.

By the way, if I'm wrong and it turns out there's a lot of time before the
update comes up; so what... You'll already have finished it and moved on to
lab preparation, which is a lot more fun... :-)

If you need some extra study materials, I've posted some free documents as
www.laganiere.net and the old cramsession I wrote years ago is still at
www.cramsession.com (with corrections on my website)...

Good luck...

Maybe somebody will correct me, but you should be able to practice most of
the same material using another, cheaper, IOS-based switch. I put this
together some time ago, but here is a rough approximation of which switch
runs which software:

 Set-based Switches (CatOS)
 7 Catalyst 1200 Series
 7 Catalyst 2901
 7 Catalyst 2902
 7 Catalyst 2926T/F
 7 Catalyst 2926GS/L
 7 Catalyst 2948G
 7 Catalyst 2980G
 7 Catalyst 4000 Series
 7 Catalyst 5000 Series
 7 Catalyst 5500 Series
 7 Catalyst 6000 Series
 7 Catalyst 6500 Series
 7 Catalyst 8500 Series

 IOS-like Switches
 7 Catalyst 2912XL
 7 Catalyst 2924XL
 7 Catalyst 3550 Series
 7 Catalyst 3500XL Series
 7 Catalyst 2950 Series

 Menu Setup Switches
 7 Catalyst 1700 Series
 7 Catalyst 1900 Series
 7 Catalyst 2100 Series
 7 Catalyst 2800 Series
 7 Catalyst 2820 Series
 7 Catalyst 3000 Series

 Token Ring Switches
 7 Catalyst 3900 Series
 7 Catalyst 2600 Series

 I hope that helps...

I wrote the now very old document for this exam at www.cramsession.com, it's

On my home site I've published a list of corrections for the cramsession,
and posted a few other documents covering RIFs, the boot sequence and a few
other commonly questioned items from this exam. I also put togehter a bit
of collective wisdom from the groupstudy archives with tips on how to
prepare for this particular exam. Everything is free, and the site is

Thanks, and let me know if that helps...

I am also doing the Boson practice#3 and have the CCXX material. I am sure
you know about Token Ring paper.

Good luck and let me know how you do.

Subject: CCIE Written passed - Boson [7:45535]

I took the CCIE written yesterday afternoon and passed (80%)

I was expecting more, but I flunked the performance/QoS section of the
exam,
which I neglected somewhat during preparation.

I used both Boson #1 and Boson #3. Those 2 tests are complementary and are
NOT substitute for each other. Boson #3 focuses on SNA issues where as
Boson
#1 focuses on the other networking topics.
If you can, you should purchase both tests.

For preparation I did a pre-test on Boson #3 and discovered how little SNA
and ATM I knew. For 3 weeks, I studied SNA and ATM using CCO + hands-on
until the whole thing felt natural. Then, on the 4th week of preparation I
repeated the same strategy with Boson #1. I dicovered 3 areas of
networking
where I had some weaknesses. I only had time to work on 2 of them
thoroughly
 before the test.

Thank you to Bernard and Dennis for excellent test materials and to all
those who gracefully took the time to answer my questions. I particularly
want to thank Priscilla and Leigh Anne who both put me back on track
several
times during the last two years and Daniel Cotts for squeezing some time
out
of his busy schedule to spend some time discussing Cisco with me.

RE: ISDN BRI Simulator Comparison [7:44763]

2002-05-22 Thread Dennis Laganiere

Earlier today I proposed putting together some comparative information on
the various ISDN Simulators available. Since the question which simulator
do I buy? comes up regularly on the list, I though a cooperative effort to
develop an answer would be an interesting exercise for the group. Just to
start the conversation, here's a review of the two that I have in my home
pod...

Arca Emutel Lite
Recent e-bay sales: $1,250 - $1,400

Features:
* 2 port BRI
* Switch types supported: NAT-1, DMS100 and 5ESS

Default settings (just because I think its useful):

PortB-channel DN SPID
1 1 384000 384001
1 2 384010 384002
2 1 384020 384021
2 2 384030 384022

The default ISDN switch-type is basic-dms100

Pro:
* Been using it for a year without a problem
* Built-in battery backup means you can use it without AC power for a quick
demonstration
* Supports either S (4-wire) or U (2-wire) interfaces (selected through
software)
* Simple console-like configuration

Con:
* Since I'm using 2503's, it requires 2 x NT1 (approx $30 each on ebay)
* Power supply is an external brick. Minor thing, but kind of annoying.

Teltone ILS-B-01 ISDN Demonstrator
Recent e-bay sales: $1,225 - $1,599 (New from the manufacture, $1,855.00)

Features:
* 2 port BRI
* Switch types supported: NAT-1, ATT Custom

Default settings (just because I think its useful):

PortB-channel DN SPID
1 1 835-86610835866101
1 2 835-86630835866301
2 1 835-86620835866201
2 2 835-86640835866401

The default ISDN switch-type is basic-nil

Pro:
* Built in power supply.
* Windows-based configuration (I haven't tried it yet, but the book makes it
look easy)

Con:
* Since I'm using 2503's, it requires 2 x NT1 (approx $30 each on ebay)
* Only has U Interfaces

I look forward to seeing what other people have used...

Thanks...

2002-05-22 Thread Dennis Laganiere

I'd agree, especially if you've got a study buddy to split the cost with...

On the other hand, the prices I found were from e-bay - so provided Cisco
doesn't drop ISDN from the lab, you can always resell the unit once you're
done and the only thing you're out is the delta in the prices and any
interest you might have lost by not investing in Enron stock... Ummm, forget
that last part... :)

For that price you might as well order 2 ISDN lines from your local telco.
That should only cost you about $80.00 a month as you don't need to get ISP
service with it. You would be able to use those for 17 months until coming
up even.

Re: CCIE Written Question [7:44578]

2002-05-20 Thread Dennis Laganiere

The problem of canonical and non-canonical MAC addresses exists because
Token Ring devices start reading each bit of a byte at the most significant
bit, while Ethernet devices start reading each bit of a byte at the least
significant bit.
The 0's and 1's are exactly the same on the Token Ring wire as they are on
the Ethernet wire. It is how the Network Interface Cards (NIC) and device
drivers read the 0's and 1's that is different. For example, an Ethernet
host would see 0100 when reading an unconverted byte sent from a
Token Ring host as 0010.

Since we usually look at MAC addresses in Hexadecimal, let's review how to
convert the numbers for our purposes. Take a look at the table below. It
provides the converted hex digits, and binary examples to show how the
numbers were derived:

0=0  ( - )   8=1 (1000 - 0001)
1=8  (0001 - 1000)   9=9 (1001 - 1001)
2=4  (0010 - 0100)   A=5 (1010 - 0101)
3=C  (0011 - 1100)   B=D (1011 - 1101)
4=2  (0100 - 0010)   C=3 (1100 - 0011)
5=A  (0101 - 1010)   D=B (1101 - 1011)
6=6  (0110 - 0110)   E=7 (1110 - 0111)
7=E  (0111 - 1110)   F=F ( - )
When converting from canonical and non-canonical, or the other way around,
take the address in one byte (two hexadecimal digits), convert the digits
based on this chart or by actually reversing the bits. Once the individual
digits are converted, swap them. For example, A7 would become E5, and E5
would become A7. There are several examples in the questions at the end of
this chapter.

I hope that helps...

I was just wondering if anybody knows a way to translate Ethernet MAC
(Cananical) to Token MAC (non-Cananical) vice versa??

I know how to do the simple ones:

 e.g. 1078.xsxx.

 HexDec SwapDecHex

 10   =  16=  0001    = 1000 =  8   = 08

 Or any other ones like

 DecHex
 101
 202
 303
 404
 505
 606
 707
 808
 909
 10 0A
 11 0B
 12 0C
 13 0D
 14 0E
 15 0F
 16 10
 17 11
 18 12
 19 13
 20 14
 21 15
 22 16
 23 17
 24 18
 25 19

But I don't know how to do it if they give me a large one e.g. Hex of 78,
or
 AC etc??

 Thanks.

 Hello,

I just want to add my own to what Dennis has said (actually I have
learned it from his book too - Thanks Dennis)

How can you easily memorize this you may be wondering...

 0=0  ( - )   8=1 (1000 - 0001)
 1=8  (0001 - 1000)   9=9 (1001 - 1001)
 2=4  (0010 - 0100)   A=5 (1010 - 0101)
 3=C  (0011 - 1100)   B=D (1011 - 1101)
 4=2  (0100 - 0010)   C=3 (1100 - 0011)
 5=A  (0101 - 1010)   D=B (1101 - 1011)
 6=6  (0110 - 0110)   E=7 (1110 - 0111)
 7=E  (0111 - 1110)   F=F ( - )

Like this: 3 Cats 5 Apples 7 Elefants and DeciBel. These stand for:
 3=C (and C=3 of course)
 5=A
 7=E
 D=B

The rest is really easy to remember because they are very easy to
project in your head in binary.
 0=0
 F=F
 6=6
 9=9
 F=F
 1=8
 2=4

 Good Luck,
 Peter
