Re: Internet Router? [7:33639]

Scott, we just replaced our 7204 w/128 MB with a 7505 256 to handle dual
DS3s. At last glimpse there were 103,000 routes. This upgrade was for
future impacts. The 7204 has been reallocated to handle another DS3 all
by itself. Hope this helps...just my .02

Scenario:
I'm looking for a Cisco router that will be providing Internet connectivity
running BGP and that will be able to handle the capacity of 2 PTP T1's to
the Internet. I know minimum RAM will have to be 64mbs for BGP routes. I
just want to know what people have tried that does and doesn't work.

My choice would be a 3640 for future T1 expandability and/or a HSSI port.

Thank you for the input.

MrSpiffy, Good news!, the CCNA is good for 3 years instead of 2. My
certificate from Cisco states valid through September 16 2003 and I
passed the exam in 2000. If you were in the undertaking of CCNP and your
CCNA expires then you would have to re-cert CCNA Get the
CCNP and you will just need to pass the re-cert exam on that from here
on out..

require a current valid CCNA to move onto the CCNP track. I have a few
questions:

1. When will my CCNA expire? Im guessing in 6 months time as I once heard
that CCNA is valid for 2 yrs.

2. If my CCNA expires in 6 months does this mean I have to complete any one
of the CCNP modules within the next 6 months for me to still be allowed to
go for CCNP without having to do CCNA v2? Or does it mean i have to complete
all 4 CCNP exams within the next 6 months prior to my CCNA expiring? i.e.
just wondering what happens if my CCNA expires whilst im undertaking CCNP.

Thanks for your help!
Cheers,

had been disconnected ready for me to move the router. I noticed that it
took a while to accept the password, and around a minute for write mem, so I
did a sho proc cpu.
CPU was running constantly at 99%, although looking through the detail there
was only around 35% in total. It was almost all in IP input.
I put no keepalive on the fast ethernet and cpu utilisation went straight
down to 1%.

Didn't have time to check what traffic was going on.

Anybody have any explanation?

I started working on my CCNA in March of 2001, I hadn't touched a router
before that. I finished my CCNA in April, finished my CCNP in July, and
then took my written on September 9th. From September 9th to the test day I
was pretty much non-stop Cisco.

I read all of the common books:
Caslow
Doyle Vol I II
Lan Switching
CCIE All In One
Cisco Practical Studies
Cisco Access List Field Guide
Cisco Packetized Voice and Data
and many, many dozens of downloaded PDF's off of CCO

I bought my own rack so I could work on it as much as possible, but the best
thing I did was find 2 other people that were preparing for the exam, and
wanted to take it around the same time I did. Having people to bounce ideas
and thoeries off of is amazingly helpful. The two others that I studied
with were first time test takers also, the first gentleman took it on Jan
6th and is CCIE #8593, the other gentleman took it on Jan 12 and is CCIE
#8630. So three for three out of our group is pretty good.

My best advice is what you've heard many times: Practice, Practice,
Practice...know the commands, you just don't have time to think about it in
the lab.

Good luck to all.

issues.

John Neiberger wrote:

We're having an interesting issue that just appeared recently. We have

why, but if one of these machines is connected to a 2924XL switch, it
regularly experiences a blue screen of death either at login or within 5
minutes of login.

We have identical machines that operate fine if they're connected to
our Bay switches or Cisco 1900 switches.

Have any of you seen anything like this?? That makes no sense to me.
The only difference I've been able to determine is that Spanning Tree is
turned off on those particular Bay switches and 1900 switches, yet it is
turned on on the 2924XL switches. So, perhaps these PCs are reacting
badly to STP BPDU.

Any thoughts? Our LAN people are doing some testing with different NIC
software and Novell client software and I'll post back to the list if we
determine the actual cause of the issue. But can you think of why it
would only happen if they're connect to a 2924?

Thanks,
John

One of the high points? the customer had sent Mr. CCIE an L3 switch

Mr. CCIE said from what I see here, I'll bet you have a routing loop. I'll

Oh, it did not hurt that Mr. CCIE had fifteen years technology experience,

even in the texas metro areas. I will never forget hearing th old addage
Frame Relay is considered unreliable. As well, I went to Network
Solutions training held by Global Knowledge in November which covered,
designing service provider networks using ATM, Frame Relay, BGP, MPLS
etc. It gave us a lot of insight into the real scenarios. The instructor
was an older person who was experienced and smart as a tack. I had to
ask him (even with providers in the class) what the hell's up with
frame relay bouncing around so much?, and he said They are screwing
with things, making upgrades, etc, but they will never tell you
that but not to blame the providers, its back to frame relay's need
for maintnance, etc. Since we have had our own ATM cloud, (partial
upgrade for some of our 24 entities) I have noticed the lack of issues
compared to those still on frame through a provider. Hope this sheds
light

You are touching one of the right buttons Larry.

I feel that customer service had gone down hill for several years now. I
even had a discussion with a guy from my providers NOC this morning, where
he had an attitude, and called me for not cooperating with them.

I have three offices in Houston and one in Dallas that are with this
provider on Frame Relay, and I was told that the three Houston offices could
get on Zoned Frame Relay, because they would all go on the same metro ring,
but that the Dallas office could not.

However, my problem this morning with a downed circuit between two Houston
offices, they told me was caused by a cut on a SONET ring in Dallas.

I questioned that, and asked him to explain how that was possible, and he
got rude and I could hear him discuss with a colleague that they were
wasting their time on me.

I am not a SONET expert, but if two offices has a PVC on a metro ring, they
should not be affected by a SONET problem in another city - or am I wrong
here ???

Also, in accordance to the SONET ring specification, it says that they are
bidirectional, and they will change you from one ring to another in
milliseconds in case of a cut, so the user should never see anything.

I appreciate any comments.

Thanks,

Ole

Having read many of the replies to this topic, I'm curious to why my biggest
frustration with service providers hasn't been addressed.

We have been an ATT shop for many years and I have been involved since we
first started using their service. In the beginning we had an excellent
account team that included a person to escalate repair issues to. And that
person actually took the ball and ran with it, pressing the issue toward
completion. They have degraded so far that I truly believe that they have no
intention of getting anything fixed during the late night hours. Also, they
no longer even have account teams that are employed directly with ATT but
are contracted. Overall, my question to this string is; does any company
still seem to care about repair issues and customers satisfaction within
that realm?

During the years I have been administering frame relay, I have been dealing
with four different providers and four different telco's, but I have so far
not seen any circuit being up for a long time without problems.

I believe that the longest I have seen a f.r. circuit being up is about a
little less the half a year, and one of our providers had an average of
downing one of our circuit every 1.5 months.

We have four circuits (three branch offices and one corp.) with a provider,
and all three branch offices has now been down once (at different dates) in
less than four months.

So, I am looking for a possitive story in the Frame Relay world. Who can
with a smile tell me about a frame relay connection that has been up for a
year or more - or would that be totally sci-fi???

I am getting SO frustrated and irritated that I have to deal with so
much trouble with simple WAN connections.

Thanks,

Ole

Re: Need BCRAN latest Dumps! [7:28236]

2001-12-10 Thread George Murphy CCNP, CCDP

I found that in the CCNP track, dumps were not necessary to pass. It was
kind of like a college course with concepts and lots of basic theory
application. You just had to commit to studying the material either way
or you risk failing due to % of possible questions. The materials are
easily learnable and not so in depth, just the beginning brushings of
the deep concepts. In my everyday duties, I find that the things I
REALLY run into are what counts. Like multi vendor equipment working
together...etc, real challenges, not What is the North American ISDN
standard? type BS and even the CCIE is a 1 product certification. In
essence, its the real world experience that is making the $$$. Anyone
who braindumps though will have a case of dirt-and-pebble mouth from
falling on their face anyway. I do have an appreciation for people who
really learn the material, because I have seen them be effective in
situations due to the fact that they were up to date on the current
technologies and fresh from their training and studying. These folks
did not have the most experience, but they were good troubleshooters and
well trained.

Just my .02
Cheers!

Re: Can someone tell me what the spoofing below means [7:28091]

2001-12-04 Thread George Murphy CCNP, CCDA

Hey Bob, see below of Cisco's explanation, but essentially you are
having BRI0/0 stay awake to keep route tables active. Everything is
good if this is what you are intending, as we do at my employer.

Routing
Once defined, interesting packets must be routed properly for a call to
be initiated. The routing process depends on two things: routing table
entries and an up interface over which to route packets.

Interfaces - up/up (spoofing)
In order for packets to be routed to and through an interface, that
interface must be up/up as seen in a show interfaces output:

Montecito# show interfaces ethernet 0
Ethernet0 is up, line protocol is up
Hardware is Lance, address is . . .
What happens to a dialer interface that is not connected? If protocol is
not up and running on the interface, the implication is that the
interface itself will not be up. Routes which rely on that interface
will be flushed from the routing table, and traffic will not be routed
to that interface. The result is that no calls would be initiated by the
interface.

The solution to counter this possibility is to allow the state up/up
(spoofing) for dialer interfaces. Any interface can be configured as a
dialer interface. For example, a Serial or Async interface could be made
into a dialer by adding the command dialer in-band or dialer dtr to the
interface's configuration. These lines are unnecessary for interfaces
that are by nature a dialer interface (BRIs and PRIs). The output for a
show interface will look like this:

Montecito# show interfaces bri 0
BRI0 is up, line protocol is up (spoofing)
  Hardware is BRI
  Internet address is . . .
In other words, the interface pretends to be up/up so that associated
routes will remain in force and so that packets can be routed to the
interface.

There are circumstances under which a dialer interface will not be up/up
(spoofing). The show interface output may show the interface as being
administratively down:

Montecito# show interfaces bri 0
BRI0 is administratively down, line protocol is down
  Hardware is BRI
  Internet address is . . .
Administratively down merely means that the interface has been
configured with the command shutdown. This is the default state of any
router interface when the router is booted for the very first time. To
remedy this, use the interface configuration command no shutdown.

2001-11-30 Thread George Murphy CCNP, CCDP

Good timing Paul, I just installed a VPN module in a 1720 last week. I
have configured the router (after updating the IOS) to establish a
tunnel as a simple router to router peer over the internet, but it is
not complete because the other side is not completely installed yet.
Here are the links I used to get tips. Scroll down to about 1/2 of the
page and you will see examples for several scenarios. They are pretty
handy and should save you some time. There is even a link to enable SSH
on the routerGood Luck!

To get blunt, which one of these specializations is going to be more in
demand/pay more in the long run? I like both technologies, but what really
brings this post is a price list I saw recently from a VAR in Kansas City.
They were charging around $150 for security stuff, but for phone stuff it
was $225 and up.

I like both technologies, but am not sure which is going to be the better
road to take. Would appreciate any input on this matter.

You may get more help on your problem from a Microsoft newsgroup. It's hard

Jason, this is one of the best questions I have seen in a while!... The
reason is I do
have my CCNP and CCDP as well as MCSE 4.0 (With Win2k knowledge) and have
been in
countless scenarios where (in my full time job), the things I know about
Microsoft have
led me right to the problem even though they (users, mgrs) all claim
Network Problem.
Just the other day two load balancing 2k servers were spewing multicasts and
bringing
down network resources like U.S. Jet Fighters on Taliban bunkers. It was
this knowledge
and the sniffer that got the answer and made me look like I was on top. Also
(part time
side job). All of the small business consulting I am doing is requiring the
Whole
Picture type consulting. I am able to provide MCSE, CCNP, CCDP and
sometimes A+ type
advice at a pretty penny, and what makes the penny shine most brightly is
the all-in-one
package they experience. Best of luck to you, hope this helps

Here is an interesting perspective on what happened September 11.

Some good news from all of this:

By now everyone has been hearing the death toll rise and reports of the
destruction from the terrorist attacks on the US.
These were deplorable acts that we will never forget. But now is a time to
look at the other side of the numbers coming out of New York, Washington
and
 Pennsylvania.
The sad but somewhat uplifting side that the mainstream media has not
reported yet the SURVIVAL rates and some positive news about the attacks.

  *** The Buildings ***

  The World Trade Center -
The twin towers of the World Trade Center were places of employment for
some 50,000 people. With the missing list of just over 5,000 people, that
means 90% of the people targeted survived the attack. A 90% on a test is an
 'A'.

  The Pentagon -
Some 23,000 people were the target of a third plane aimed at the Pentagon.
The latest count shows that only 123 lost their lives.
That is an amazing 99.5% survival rate. in addition, the plane seems to
have come too low, too early to affect a large portion of the building. On
top of that, the section that was hit was the first of five sections to
undergo renovations that would help protect the Pentagon from terrorist
 attacks. It had recently completed
straightening and blast proofing, saving untold lives. This attack was
sad,
 but a statistical failure.

  *** The Planes ***

  American Airlines Flight 77

This Boeing 757 that was flown into the outside of the Pentagon could have
carried up to 289 people, yet only 64 were aboard. Luckily 78% of the seats
 were empty.

  American Airlines Flight 11
This Boeing 767 could have had up to 351 people aboard, but only carried
 92. Thankfully 74% of the seats were unfilled.

  United Airlines Flight 175
Another Boeing 767 that could have sat 351 people only had 65 people on
board. Fortunately it was 81% empty.

  United Airlines Flight 93
This Boeing 757 was one of the most uplifting stories yet. The smallest
flight to be hijacked with only 45 people aboard out of a possible 289 had
84% of its capacity unused. Yet these people stood up to the attackers and
thwarted a fourth attempted destruction of a national landmark, saving
 untold numbers of lives
  in the process.

  *** In Summary ***
Out of potentially 74,280 Americans directly targeted by these inept
cowards, 93% survived or avoided the attacks. That's a higher survival rate
than heart attacks, breast cancer, kidney transplants and liver transplants
 - all common, survivable illnesses.

The Hijacked planes were mostly empty, the Pentagon was hit at it's
strongest point, the overwhelming majority of people in the World Trade
Center buildings escaped, and a handful of passengers
gave the ultimate sacrifice to save even more lives.

Pass this information on to those in fear and the media. Don't fear these
terrorists. The odds are against them.

However, I haven't heard any details yet but apparently someone at

Right now, we have a large frame relay network but I'm seriously

 Any thoughts?

I had this same experience with them a while back. They covered the basics
and may be
good for someone just getting to know the ins and outs (theory etc) but as
far as exam
prep they did not pass with me.

Kevin Wigle wrote:

If I recall properly, these folks have gone through a few company names.

I think they used to be Fore Systems.

A few years back I purchased their cbt's for ICRC and ACRC.

I was just starting my Cisco studies in those days. At the time I was a
Banyan Vines guy (CBE/CBI) and an NT guy (MCSE) with a smattering of a few
 Unixes.

I was very disappointed with the material. The presentation was very
glizty
and appealing but there were many problems with the validity of the
content.
I forwarded over a dozen screen captures of incorrect information to them
over the course of a month. Finally I was at the point where I was asking
for some compensation for the shoddy material.

They eventually agreed that the material had flaws (how do you disagree
with
a screen capture?) and said had I complained within 30 days I could have
returned the CDs with a full refund. This of course they reminded me at
the
5 week mark. I failed my first attempt at ICRC using their material. I
was
woefully un-prepared although I could ace their practice tests. The exam
at
the time had lots of material that the courses did not cover. They did
send
 me a exam voucher.

I sold the material on eBay and got some of my cost back.

They have since called me many times - I think everytime they changed
names,
(and sales people turn over) trying to get me to buy until I told whoever
the unfortunate soul was that in my eyes their reputation preceded them and
 no thanks.

I haven't been contacted in a long time now.

However, that doesn't mean their present offerings aren't
better

Congrats Ole Drews!, You have a lot of respectable experience and now CCNP to

what count the most!..

Ole Drews Jensen wrote:

Here's a thanks to all of you who directly and indirectly helped me pass my
CCNP exams. I passed CIT this morning as the last one.

The CIT exam was the one I felt best prepared for, but passed with a lower
score that any of the others. I felt that the questions were worded very
badly compared to the other exams, and I was asked questions about specific
details that I did not recall having read in any of my books. Anyway, I
 passed - so I'm happy!

A little advise to those of you who are on the first step on the CCNP
 ladder:

 1) Read at least two books for each exam, unless you feel very sure you
know
everything you need to. A good rule that I have used, is to get a study
guide with good reviews. You can search, find and check for those on
http://www.amazon.com. A study guide usually uses an easier language that
you can better understand if you're reading about the topic for the first
time. As a second book, I like to buy a CiscoPress course or exam book,
because they are more detail specific regarding what they want you to know
for the exam. I do not recommend CiscoPress course or exam books as the
only
book unless you are good at reading and understanding technical
explanations. They can be a little hard to understand if you're not really
sure what they're trying to tell you.

 2) Download the Cisco exams from Boson. Take all three test exams, and then
buy the full version of the one you score lowest in.

 3) Look on the Internet for other good helping tools or descriptions. For
the CIT, I recommend using the Flash Cards that Priscilla has available
(http://www.priscilla.com), and for the BCMSN exam, I recommend my own
applications to help you train the commands on the Catalyst 5000 and
calculate Multicast layer 2 and 3 addresses. Those two applications can be
found by following my RouterChief link below.

Now on to CSS1 starting Monday or Tuesday when I expect the book to arrive.

 Have a nice weekend,

 Ole

Re: Pong Heartbeat [7:16337]

2001-08-19 Thread George Murphy CCNP, CCDP

Maybe pong is a new kind of ping reply. kinda like the way the dot
used to bounce back frm the other side of the screen. We have some
heartbeat situations with clusters ;-)

Priscilla Oppenheimer wrote:

Was this by any chance one of those guys (and it usually is guys, sorry)

spout tekkie terms? ;-)

Heartbeat was an Ethernet II technology. It wasn't available on Ethernet I,
so there were some compatibility issues. IEEE supports it also and calls it
SQE. When you install an external transceiver you have to configure the SQE
test signal. It should be disabled if the transceiver is attached to a hub.
The purpose of the signal is to test the collision detection electronics of
the transceiver. It used to cause all sorts of troubleshooting issues and
would be the number one thing someone who learned Ethernet 15 years ago
would tell you to look into.

Pong was a very cool video game. Please don't knock it. ;-) Could he have
meant ping?? Or, maybe Spong? Spong monitors system performance. I don't
think it has anything to do with Cisco though. I guess it could monitor a
few things on a Cisco router maybe.

Re: Word of Caution - RE: Shipping Home Lab Equipment [7:12913]

2001-07-19 Thread George Murphy CCNP, CCDA

I agree, we deal with this as well in our area and I cant believe their
disregard for
costly valuables. It seems like an easy way out without resposibility for
them. I would
just like them to consider how they would handle it if it were their
Catalyst 5002
that was being delivered to improve the network, that switches the oh so
precious data
they rely on. ;-)

Leigh Anne Chisholm wrote:

Just a word of caution for everyone out there that's buying equipment for
 their home labs.

Yesterday I had a Catalyst 5002 delivered to my home by UPS. It was
packaged in a Dell computer box and left at my door. The driver didn't
wait
for a signture or even to see if anyone was home. The box was left plain
 view from the street.

Apparently, that's UPS's policy. Unless the shipper indicates adult
signature required, UPS can just drop your package at the front door and
leave. There's the fact that since it was in plain view of the street and
since it was in a box that would be very enticing to anyone passing by,
that
was my first concern... but the other fact is that it had just finished
raining - and it was very likely we could get another storm shortly (since
it's supposed to rain all week). Just what I need -- a soggy investment!

If you're going to be buying equipment, I really don't recommend shipping
via UPS. When I called UPS to complain, I was told that UPS gets more
complaints that packages aren't left because they require signature than
complaints over packages being left without getting a signature so they're
not likely to change their policy any time soon (however why would they get
complaints about packages not being left if their policy is that they can
 leave packages without signature?)

 Guh.

If you think about it, that's all a router does. It resolves hardware

the
same thing. This was described to me years ago by a good friend who was in
the TAC. Simplicity. All the other complicated stuff is just extentions
