RE: CCDA Study material [7:71111]
Group, To answer the question regarding Knowledgenet from thread below...I've recently purchased a few courses from Knowledgenet - cvoice, dqos and evodd. It's basically 6 weeks of self/web-based study with hands on lab scenarios and sample exam questions for each class. My first course was cvoice. I went through the coursework just about everyday for six weeks. At the end of the six weeks I sat the cvoice exam and passed - the only material used was from knowledgenet and the cisco website - a little hand-on experience helped as well. I'm in the process of sitting the exam for dqos - this upcoming Friday... Thanks. So what is the current exam number? 640-861 DESGN Is it just one exam that I have to take? Yes, It's just one exam to get CCDA. Lots of exams to get CCDP. Do you know what the new exam number will be or is? I think it's the same answer as the one above. It just came out but I don't think you can still take the old one, as I implied before. Cisco shouldn't change the exam for a while. It took them years to do the development on this class and test. And they did a great job, from what I can tell. I was looking at taking the following course, what do you think: http://www.knowledgenet.com/courselibrary/cisco/courses/desgn_pf.jsp An advantage to taking the class is that you will get the 1,000s of pages that Cisco wrote for the course manual. I don't know much about Knowledgenet. It appears to not be a real, carbon-based classroom where you go in person to the site and can easily interract with the instructor and other people taking the class, which is a major benefit in a design class. In fact, the exercises for DESGN are designed to be done with a team. Can you do that with this Web-based training? It's possible that they do a good job with their Web-based training and simulate the real world well. I just don't know. Cisco recommends that DESGN be taught with a simulator that will let you do some design tasks. They recommend OPNET. Does Knowledgenet let you use OPNET? I would ask a few questions before shelling out a lot of money for the Knowlegenet course. Has anyone else here on GroupStudy used them? If you do use them, let us know how it goes. Thanks and good luck with your CCDA. Priscilla Thank you! --- Priscilla Oppenheimer wrote: CiscoNewbie wrote: Hi all. I am going up for my CCDA cert and would like to know what are the recommended books and material to study with? Nothing is out yet for the new version of the test, as far as I know. Your best bet would be to take the instructor-led class, if you can afford it. With a good instructor, I think DESGN could be a really great class. It's got tons of meat now, much more than before. It has a big focus on systems analysis as it is taught at universities, as a real discipline, not just a bunch of hand-waving. The class also has a huge scope, covering almost everything you ever wanted to know related to campus and enterprise networks, from business (which they call social or organizational) goals, technical goals, topologies, architectures, modular design, addressing (including IPv6), routing, voice, network management, and security. One focus is on the SAFE architecture, so look that up on Cisco's site and learn it. There's also some AVVID stuff Many of the course modules are partially based on my book Top-Down Network Design. Many of the modules say that Top-Down Network Design is recommended reading. Top-Down Network Design doesn't cover some newer topics, though, such as SAFE and AVVID, although it did cover voice in a limited fashion, since Cisco has been harping on that for years now. DESGN covers voice in gory detail, however. It seems to have all of the old CVOICE course in it. Each module in DESGN has many chapters, each of which is literally hundreds of pages long. The person turning it into a book (not me unfortunately) is going to have a heyday. :-) I haven't taken the new test, but if it really tests all that's in the course, it's going to be one of the hardest tests out there (and that's a good thing. It's about time design got some respect. :-) Anyway, bottom line: if you can take the older version of the test, then there's lots of study materials. If you have to take the newer version, then you should take the instructor-led DESGN class or wait a few months for study material. Priscilla Thanks. - Do you Yahoo!? SBC Yahoo! trunking 10/100 access ports for avaya ip phone [7:62045]
Anyone have any insight on the pro's or con's regarding applying trunks to all 10/100 access ports on a 6509. Presently, I have a cisco voIP environment - using a data vlan and an auxiliary vlan for voice traffic. I've been asked to make an avaya phone work in this environment. Input from Avaya had me make the access port a trunk, make the data vlan the default vlan and apply the aux vlan to the port as well. It does work - my question is in regards to performance and/or design best practices. TIA Robert LEGAL NOTICE Unless expressly stated otherwise, this message is confidential and may be privileged. No, I said it's used by upper layers. Those layers are aware of it, though. The Service Location Protocol (SLP) RFC, for example, states which IP multicast address to use. The Realtime Streaming Protocol (RTSP) knows about IP multicast too. I don't know the details, but RTSP specifies a method for a client to find out what IP multicast address a server is sending to. There's a presentation description that includes the multicast address. If you look at the RFC for RTSP, there's lots of discussion of multicast. RTSP is nominally an application-layer protocol, at least according to the author of the RFC. Priscilla I think it is correct to say that a higher-layer protocol may assume that a lower-layer protocol will require use of a layer 3 multicast service, but doesn't itself implement multicast. The upper layer entity (in strict OSI terms) need not have direct access to the multicast network layer service, but potentially could indirectly request that functionality through higher-layer service interfaces. Without looking at the Transport Service Specification, I can't remember if it has the semantics, with the Connectionless Transport Service, of multicasts. My general recollection is that you use a network service address and let the Network Service figure out the semantics. There's probably lots of others too! Layer 2 multicasts are used for IP multicast, but for many other purposes too, such as BPDU, CDP, VTP, DISL, AppleTalk Name Binding Protocol (NBP) lookups, etc. Priscilla TIA Robert Priscilla Oppenheimer http://www.priscilla.com Priscilla Oppenheimer http://www.priscilla.com Message Posted at: http://www.groupstudy.com/form/read.php?f=7i=47650t=47591 -- FAQ, list archives, and subscription info: http://www.groupstudy.com/list/cisco.html Report misconduct and Nondisclosure violations to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

The range of addresses for Ethernet is 0x01:00:5E:00:00:00 through 0x01:00:5E:7F:FF:FF. Switches A and B also have a redundant fiber between them. Regarding the hardware, The core 6509 has 2 supervisor engines with dual MSFCs. The two 6506 have only one supervisor engine and their MSFC DO NOT do routing at all. My concern/question is that if the supervisor engine of one of the distribution 6506 died, can access switches attached to this 6506 re-route to the redundant link? I doubt this will work because the the supervisor engine of the 6506 has all the configuration (including vlans) for the ports/trunks attached to access switches died. Is there any way to to set them up so that if the supervisor engine on one distribution 6506 dies, all ports/trunks on this 6506 can still be OK with redundant link? The interface has secondary addresses of x.x.155.254, x.x.156.254 and x.x.157.254. Servers on this network are dropping packets, one in particular, serverA-x.x.155.219, is dropping packets 50% of the time. Moved the server to a different switch, same vlan105, the problem continues. Moved the server to vlan100, it works fine. Replaced cable and nics. Ensured proper speed and duplex are configured. No output from a debug vlan or span. Opened a TAC case a few days ago and the problem still remains. I just got a suggestion to remove and rebuild the vlan105 interface on the router. That will happen later this afternoon. RE: High CPU Utilization [7:15272]
Nabil, We recently had the same issue on several 7500's and the High CPU (80-100%)was attributed to code red. However, at the onset of our problems, we did enable CEF and netflow switching on a few interfaces, via recommendations from TAC. That brought the CPU utilization down to 40-50% instantly. After cleaning up the code red issues, CPU utilization tapered down to 25-35%. I love my job!!! Otherwise, you have to make those changes to both MSFCs manually (AFAIK). That's why it's advantageous to use the Native IOS, so that you can configure (what appears to be) a single router with a boatload of interfaces, and all sync and replication between the active and redundant Sup are automatic (by default in Native IOS 12.x and higher). You can run the Native (aka Supervisor IOS) for Enhanced High Availability in which case the one of the Sup/MSFC acts as a total physical backup for the other (i.e. it appears as one Sup/MSFC). We just did some testing on our 6509 today by yanking out the active Sup and timing it until the other came up. HSRP / MSFC Configurations on 6509 [7:11684]
Thomas, I'm awaiting the delivery of a 6509 w/dual MSFC's and would like to configure HSRP and HA between the two. Must HA and HSRP be configured simultaneously? It seems from my reading that HA will provide redundancy between the supervisor engines and HSRP will provide the routing redundancy between the MSFC's - is this true? RE: NAT / citrix connectivity [7:7709]
Shrug, You indicated that even if we use NAT, client-side changes will still have to be made. I found one document on the citrix site that speaks of ICA Browsing with firewall address translation - NAT. This document provides a straight-forward solution but requires making a change on both the client and server side. Is there any other documentation that states the need to configure the client as well. My dilemma is that I've been asked to provide a solution that will allow the citrix client to create a session to the citrix server in the new subnet - and doing so without touching the client-side. If you need interoperability, go with 802.1q. Even if you're all Cisco, some of Cisco's stuff doesn't support ISL. I say use whatever is available and works for you, keeping in mind that reconfiguration in the future will be necessary if you change trunk types. If that's not a big deal, I wouldn't worry about it. If it will cause a horrendous headache to have those trunks down for a minute or two while you reconfigure, then think toward the future and pick 802.1q. g I have noticed a configuration difference between the two. It was supposedly fixed in IOS 12.1(2), I think, but I've noticed this in 12.1(5) still. When using ISL, all of your VLANs are placed on subinterfaces on the router. This is because all frames coming across that trunk have an ISL tag for VLAN determination. In 802.1q, the native VLAN (VLAN 1 by default) is not tagged so you have to place the configuration for that VLAN on the major interface. All other VLANs would be on subinterfaces. RE: vlans and trunking
Pete, You are correct. I will have to add the additional vlans manually. However, another project that just got put on my plate is to look into the whole VTP issue. Through my reading, I like the idea of the vtp pruning as well. What are your thoughts on VTP pruning? VTP transparent mode means that the VLAN config on each switch is only locally significant. That means if you add a VLAN to a switch, you will have to go and add the same VLAN to every other switch, which is exactly was VTP is intended to prevent :) If you would like VTP to work, it would be wise to configure a couple key switches as servers and set the rest to client mode. Before doing this however, I highly suggest you read up on VTP and become comfortable with the nuances before you begin a migration. (Some parting shots) I passed, but I received by FAR the lowest score of any Cisco exam I've taken. I was worried that I might have failed it, but I squeaked through somehow. I must agree with others who have mentioned how awful this test is. Sheesh... These were some of the most vague questions and answers that I've ever seen. This is definitely a test where you need to master the art of answering questions the "Cisco Way (tm)." Interestingly, I received a 0% on spotting security issues, which was amusing. :-) I only remember about four security questions and I feel that I got at least two of those correct, while one of them was almost incomprehensible. The SNA kicked my hiney, as well. I even have some experience with it from work and I supplemented that with the Sybex CID study guide and still did not prepare nearly enough for the types of questions I was asked. I only got 42% on the SNA section. The rest of the test was better for me. I think the other categories were all 75% or higher. Believe me, I was sweating big-time while the test was being graded. I was NOT looking forward to more preparation if I had to take it again. Also, there was a LOT of Windows/NetBIOS stuff. Learn it, live it, love it. I think that to do *really* well on this test, it's necessary to have hands-on experience with these protocols. It would be hard to prepare fully for these questions otherwise. I've noticed something else that maybe some of you can relate to. When I passed the CCNA test, I was absolutely ecstatic! I wanted to party all day. When I passed the DCN, I was very happy as well, but not quite as much as when I passed CCNA. I finished up CCNP a couple of weeks ago and felt more a sense of relief than of joy. The only reason my wife and I celebrated was that the next day was Valentine's day so we combined the two occasions. Tonight, after passing CCDP, I'm not even excited at all about it. Weird, huh? However, if I ever finish CCIE, I doubt there will be much of a lack of excitement. Then again, maybe I'm wrong. I think that for some of us, the joy comes in the pursuit, not the catch, and with every cert that we finish, that's one less trophy to hunt and we have to find something else to stay happy. Who knows, maybe after I finish up CCIE (sometime before 2005 g) I'll actually go back and finish up a college degree! :-) Okay, I'm rambling. I'll go to bed now. router training lab
Hello Group, I want to build a router lab that will allow me start the CCNP track. First and foremost is obtaining some usable hands-on training. The equipment that I have is as follows: 1 - 1900 switch 1 - 2900 10/100 switch 1 - 2500 router 2 serial / 1 bri 2 - 3600 router both have 1 2port ethernet module - very limited associated cabling - very limited funding My question is simply...What can I build in this present situation that will provide hands-on router understanding. I want to learn more about rip, igrp, ospf, eigrp and bgp. Any thoughts or comments will be greatly appreciated. Regards, Robert Robert M. RE: BSCN/Routing 2.0: Here's the Gouge...
Congratulations and thanks for the input. I'll be attempting the BSCN in a few weeks. Good success to you and all the others who are pursuing the various cisco certs!! Robert Lopez Pfizer Network Planning -Original Message- From: Jennifer Mellone [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Friday, October 20, 2000 5:59 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: BSCN/Routing 2.0: Here's the Gouge... I'm debriefing myself within hours of passing this test (my first CCNP test), so the information I share is fresh in my head. I hope it helps some folks out there. The Breakdown: 61 questions, 75 minutes, need 690 (on a scale of 300-100) to pass. It took me 1 hour, and I'm a slow test taker. Section Analysis: Routing Principles (not so many questions) Extending IP Addresses (not so many questions) Configuring OSPF in a Single Area (tons of questions) Interconnecting Multiple OSPF Areas (alot of questions) Configuring EIGRP (not so many questions) Configuring Basic Border Gateway Protocol (tons of questions) Implementing BGP in Scalable Networks (not so many questions) Optimizing Routing Update Operation (a few questions) Implementing Scalability Features in Your Internetwork (a few questions) Types of Questions: 1) Theory, and lots of it, where you have to pick the best 2 or 3 of the bunch 2) Here's the config, and what does it mean, what does it do 3) Which config. accomplishes the following xxx 4) What command do you use to do xxx, and you select from a huge list in the exhibit; know if you're in global mode, interface mode, etc. 5) Drag drop "matching" style 6) Summarization related 7) Apply the theory you know to some situation, such as interpreting show command outputs Key Concepts to Study (theory and implementation): Distance Vector/Link State, How BGP/OSPF/EIGRP work (e.g., updates, hellos, opens), ip helpers, OSPF LSAs, Summarizing, BGP route selection criteria, route reflector, next hop, prefix list, policy routing, redistribution (for BGP/OSPF/EIGRP), basic show commands Resources: 1. If you have the BSCN course material, that's great. Or buy Cisco Press BSCN book when it comes out. These are bread and butter for the test and keep you focused on what you need to know for the test, rather than having to dig around multiple sources (I hate that). 2. Supplemental resources to further explain things that you don't fully understand from the above are Doyle's TCP/IP Cisco Press book, ACRC Cisco Press book, Halabi's Internet Routing Architectures Cisco Press book, and Thomas's OSPF Cisco Press book (to view the show command screen outputs). I basically used these for reference, not for reading cover to cover. Practice Tests (do after you think you're done studying for the test): 1. Boson (I bought test 3, which has some lu lu's on there, especially quiz D. Each of 4 quizzes in test 3 had 51 questions, so test 3 had 204 total questions. Some questions stressed the same stuff over and over, but that's ok so I can retain and take each quiz just once. Test 1, 2, or 3 can be downloaded for about $30 each from http://www.boson.com/) 2. Free CCO/Colt (strange wording that will deflate your confidence if you use that as a basis for your understanding, plus they don't give you the answers; they just tell you which questions you answered wrong) http://www.cisco.com/cgi-bin/front.x/wwtraining/colt/ColtLogin.pl Misc. Tips: There is no such thing as too much studying! The questions really make you think and apply what you learned; very few questions are simply recalling things by rote (those of course, are the easy ones). Close the books by 10pm the night before the test and watch ER :-) I'll post to the list as I continue the road to CCNP. Jennifer L. I would like to make another note. After reviewing the Cisco whitepapers that I downloaded to help me study for these exams, I noticed that there were even more questions on the actual exams that the answers to them came directly from the Cisco Documents (imagine that). I would recommend that while studying for the exams, anyone who REALLY wants to know the material should get as much information as possible directly from the Cisco Documentation, in addition to any other study materials that you may have. Remember the end goal is NOT just to pass the exams, but to know the material. In every technical interview that I have had, no one has ever asked me what score I received on an exam. They dug down deep into my knowledge to see what I actually know, which is miniscule to what most of you have :-) . I did find a couple that the answers were wrong, so make sure to double check your answers. And they are FREE!!!. There was a mad rush at that gas station since everyone wanted to get the cheap gas. If you were an owner of a nearby gas station, I bet you would be furious to see all your customer lining up at another gas station. Now tell me who would you blame, the gas station owner who reduced the price of gasoline or the people who are lining up at his gas station? I see analogy of this scenerio with US Government giving out H1-B visas. Now H1-B is an invention of companies like Microsoft and others who love cheap labour. And then of course it has blessings of majority of leaders in Washington. So if foreigners are taking advantage of this who is to blame, the people who are seeking H1-B or who are giving it. I'd say it US government one should blame and not the H1-B seekers. On top of that I know that H1-B in nothing more than an elegant form of slave labour where an employee has absolutely no right what so ever and companies exploit them to the max. One of their salesman was being interviewed by the local newspaper, St Petersburg Times, and he was naming off the advantages of hiring foreign workers, and I quote, "We just placed one man in Boston for $55k/yr if it had been an American they would have had to pay $85K/yr". I keep wondering about that level playing field George Bush Sr was always talking about. Well put... Basically, if you do not like your job, find another. If you are having issues with people from other cultures and backgrounds, get over it. This is AMERICA It's only going to get better. Lets face it, the boundaries of the world are shrinking. The folks who have issues with "foreigners", better take a closer look at the content of your heart. I have to go, I have work to do. Hello Engineers, I would like to address a few issues regarding H1B visas as this became the hot topic for some frustrated people who could not qualify to get a job opening. I am amazed how people like here in this big educated list talk about such things, especially in the golden age of IT, where there is no boundary of country, caste, religion, race, color etc etc. We are talking big internet, and transit points, and gateways and routers, and global connectivity and reachability and balancing and faster access. These are true hypocrites who take advantage of the technology but when it comes to personal things they discriminate between x y. To end this talk, I would add an example. If you are given a option to buy a foreign product much more sophisticated, cheaper, durable, and having lot of advantages V/s selecting any local made brand of the same product which may or may not have the same features but it will be costlier, which one would you people personally go for. If you say local product, I will be sorry my friends we are using the best type of US products all over the world because of blah blah reasons and if everybody thinks your way, then ??? you get what I mean, and I am sure in US also many different products from different countries are given preference over local products. Thinks yourself as a product and the employer as the customer you will get a answer. Everybody loves his country, and is proud of it, but when it comes to being a customer whatever is best for you, people go for it. Think broader, Do broad, increase the bandwidth of your heart, and reduce the delay of your mind get to pure business, where there is no difference between a citizen or a expat, quality job is the requirement cisco is the certification. i apologize everybody if I said something wrong. I just want to say think broad, be global and stop criticising others Be a polished product local/Foreign people will go for you all over the world. Thanks. __ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! RE: CCNA pass
Congratulations Andrew!! The CCNP path or CCDA is next. Take your pick and have at it. I recently obtained my CCNA and I'm presently preparing for the CCDA exam. I'm using the DCN book along with Internet Routing Architectures for study material. I also have my sights set on the CCNP track as well. I picked up the BCMSN book by Thomas Thomas for my first test for CCNP. The ultimate goal is the coveted CCIE. With a lot of hard work and determination I'll get there. Good luck to you and keep working hard. Regards, Robert Lopez Network Analyst Pfizer Anyone from Southeastern Michigan? Hello I'm studying for the CCDA exam using the DCN Cisco Press book and the CCDA Study Guide from Sybex. Will this suffice for my reading material? I recently passed the CCNA 1.0 test with a 845. Will there be any similarities between these two tests? Thanks in advance for any input! Robert M.
