Jay, The telco can loop your CSU/DSU either internal or external. They can only loop the CSU portion of your CSU/DSU. Are they actually able to give the CSU inside the Cisco Router a command to be looped or are they really just looping the smart-jack/demark ? I've been on the phone with telco and seen that when they claim to have the CSU\DSU looped, what they are actually doing is looping the smart-jack/demark, which will loop all traffic from the csu back on itself. Holy cow Batman! Around here the network is so big and complicated, not to mention dynamic, that I don't know how you'd ever maintain that kind of acurate detail. Heck, they think I'm anal just because I want interface names and IP addresses on the drawing. :) Yes, I agree that you're better to error on the too much information side though. Do you incorporate any layering in your drawings? The new visio also has some drill down capabilities for each device as well that's pretty handy. Again, it's only as good as the info input though. Transition from private network to public [7:19181]
Is anyone aware of any links or research that discuss the advantages of taking a large enterprise from an expensive private network (OC-3s and private lines all over) to more use of the public network, in terms of cost reduction and efficiency? Many will still argue that a tightly firewalled private network is necessary, but -- out of the box here -- is it really? Couldn't one put protection on files and route them over the public network? Couldn't an enterprise save $$ by using the public network for email? At first, people might say, No! we don't want all your corporate email dumped on the Internet, which is crowded enough. But, if corporations make more use of the Internet and develop more dependency on it, wouldn't they have more of a stake in the development and improvement of it? If anyone knows of any public white papers on this subject that have been posted or would like to share thoughts on this subject, I'd appreciate it. I am not looking for a flame war, just education. The question I have is of what use is the binary math method of subnetting as compared to just using a program that does subnetting? If the point to the exercise is to produce a plan for subnetting that can then be entered into each device on the network or into a DHCP server setup, what else is achieved by doing this manually? It seems to me that the point is not the journey, but the arrival at the destination. Indeed arrival as quickly as possible, with the least source of error. As Cisco even says; The purpose of this tool is to provide a way to calculate IP subnetting which is fast, easy, and error free. Doing such calculations manually is time consuming and susceptible to common mathematical mistakes, especially in conversions between binary and decimal numbers. So what is it I am not understanding? Token Ring in home lab questions
Dug through the archives and found very little on setting up Token Ring in a home lab. I'm still confused. How is this done? Any good sites that I can go to find out this information? Among other equipment, I've got an SMC MAU, a Token Ring NIC installed in a PC, DB-9 to RJ45 media filter, and a 2504. What type of cable do I need between the media filter on the router and the MAU? I know it's not a standard Cat 5 cable because Token Ring uses different pins than Ethernet. What about the cable between the PC and the MAU? The NIC card can handle either RJ-45 or DB-9. On the MAU, there are two ports that are labeled RO and RI with small push button switches next to them to enable or disable "wrap". What are these for? Any information would be appreciated. PLCC tool and 4000M+ questions
1.)Does anybody know where I can get a PLCC (Plastic leaded chip carrier) extraction tool so I can replace the boot roms in some 2500's. Or is there another way of removing them without damaging them? 2.) Cisco's website and their technical staff claim that the 4000M+ can only handle 8MB of flash memory (two slots that can each handle a 4MB flash module)even with upgraded boot roms installed. I find this hard to believe. Anybody ever upgraded the 4000M+ with more than 8MB flash or is it even possible? PLCC Tool, 4000M+ Flash questions
Let's try this again. I sent this once but it didn't make it for some reason. I have two questions. If anyone could answer them I would really appreciate it. 1.) I can't locate a PLCC (plastic leaded chip carrier) extraction tool to change some boot rooms in some 2500's. Where can I get one or what can I safely use in place of it? 2.) Cisco's website and tech support claim that the 4000M+ can only handle 8 MB of flash (4MB + 4MB in the slots). I find this hard to believe. Has anyone found out any differently?
