I just ran into an interesting problem with the Cat4000 series. Cisco does
not support dot1q at this time on that platform. They are coming out with a
new IOS but it has not been released yet. You can only run ISL.

It's possible. Make sure the router has a 100BT interface and set up dot1q
between the router and the switch. use sub ints on the router to define the
Vans and your good to go.

I hope this is what you were asking.

RE: telco looping [7:24972]

2001-11-01 Thread Walker, Lori A, SOBUS

Jay, The telco can loop your CSU/DSU either internal or external. They can
only loop the CSU portion of your CSU/DSU. Their is a loop up command for
the CSU and another command for the NIE (for 56K/64K circuits)/NIU(for full
T1's) or smart jack whichever you prefer.

When troubleshooting a typical T1 with telco and they say they have
your CSU looped. Are they actually able to give the CSU inside the Cisco
Router a command to be looped or are they really just looping the
smart-jack/demark ? I've been on the phone with telco and seen that when
they claim to have the CSU\DSU looped, what they are actually doing is
looping the smart-jack/demark, which will loop all traffic from the csu
back on itself.

AFAIK, collisions on a serial interface cannot happen. Perhaps, I'm wrong,
but as Brian said, collisions are a side effect of half-duplex transmissions
where the two ends try to transmit at the same time. I can't think of any
other specification besides ethernet where collisions can happen.

Network Drawings [7:24574]

2001-10-29 Thread Hyde, Lori

Hi All
I'm wondering what you think of as necessary information on a network
drawing. I'm thinking that each site will consist of two layers of
drawings, one for the WAN and one for the LAN.
Here's what I have so far as necessary for the wan:
site name - site address - site contact name - wan router address - wan
address range - lan address and range - isp - circuit ID - contact info -
vpn/tunnel addresses.
Anyone have other suggestions?
Also, does anyone have an example of what they think of as a great network

Holy cow Batman! Around here the network is so big and complicated, not to
mention dynamic, that I don't know how you'd ever maintain that kind of
acurate detail. Heck, they think I'm anal just because I want interface
names and IP addresses on the drawing. :)
Yes, I agree that you're better to error on the too much information side
though. Do you incorporate any layering in your drawings? The new visio
also has some drill down capabilities for each device as well that's pretty
handy. Again, it's only as good as the info input though.
Thanks for the feedback. Maybe I'm not crazy after all. :)

Lori,

a good entwork drawing is based on *YOU* and the people you work with
solely.

When you are on call, what would you need to work on the problem from home?
Can you remember ip addresses? domain info? dns info? wins info for each
site? how about how many switches *should* be in a cluster? How about what
prots have portfast enabled and which should not? how about ipx network
info? How about what frame types you are using on the lan and the wan?

My network diagrams are *EXTREMELY* detailed all the way down to what mac
address is supposed to have what ip address and which ports are sticky and
which are not.

Remember, diagrams are only as good as the info on them. If they don't help
you or your juniors solve a problem, then they're useless. I try to make it
so that when my juniors are on call, I *DON'T* get called... :)

As far as I know my options are:

1) Cisco PIX accessed by VPN Client 1.1
2) Cisco 3000 (or 5000) Concentrator accessed by VPN client 3.1
3) Cisco IPsec IOS access by VPN Client 1.1

It would seem that option 3 is the most cost effective (assuming you already

Anyone with hints/info/caveats?

One thing to be aware of - the VPN client doesn't (at least didn't last
time I looked) support Windows 2000. It also has (once again, possibly
should be had) big issues with some ISPs, especially aol and netzero.

I have to agree with the other folks, the concentrator (we have 3
vpn-3030 systems deployed around the world) is rock solid - I've only
ever had one hang. The cisco VPN hardware solution is a great fit for
home offices connecting to the concetrator, and the 806 router also
works very well.

I've used the client to pix, and while it works fine, it's a real
p.i.t.a.

Transition from private network to public [7:19181]

2001-09-09 Thread Lori

Is anyone aware of any links or research that discuss the advantages of
taking a large enterprise from an expensive private network (OC-3s and
private lines all over) to more use of the public network, in terms of
cost reduction and efficiency?
Many will still argue that a tightly firewalled private network is
necessary, but -- out of the box here -- is it really? Couldn't one put
protection on files and route them over the public network? Couldn't an
enterprise save $$ by using the public network for email? At first,
people might say, No! we don't want all your corporate email dumped on
the Internet, which is crowded enough. But, if corporations make more
use of the Internet and develop more dependency on it, wouldn't they
have more of a stake in the development and improvement of it?
If anyone knows of any public white papers on this subject that have
been posted or would like to share thoughts on this subject, I'd
appreciate it. Thanks, Lori

If you study the Cisco press Cisco CCNP Support Exam Certification Guide
you will be 100 OK. I didn't get anything in the exam that wasn't covered

The order I did the exams in is as follows

 Switching 945
 Routing 954
 BCRAN 954
 CIT 965

After switching and routing the other 2 are rather easy. Just study the
Cisco press guides and use the cram sessions from brainbuzz. The boson
exams
are pretty good, especially for switching and CIT. also the edge tests that
come with the Sybex books are a big help. Sybex study guide has a lot of
information and will also be sufficient to pass the exams. But you don't
need both Cisco and sybex, only one will do and if I had to choose I would
 choose the Cisco press books

This is a study group so I have a question for which I need some education.
I am not looking for a flame war, just education. The question I have is of
what use is the binary math method of subnetting as compared to just using a
program that does subnetting? If the point to the exercise is to produce a
plan for subnetting that can then be entered into each device on the network
or into a DHCP server setup, what else is achieved by doing this manually?
It seems to me that the point is not the journey, but the arrival at the
destination. Indeed arrival as quickly as possible, with the least source of
error. As Cisco even says; The purpose of this tool is to provide a way to
calculate IP subnetting which is fast, easy, and error free. Doing such
calculations manually is time consuming and susceptible to common
mathematical mistakes, especially in conversions between binary and decimal
numbers. So what is it I am not understanding?

Greg,
We implemented BGP with two service providers a few months back. It didn't
take long to get the AS number (maybe a couple of weeks). It is easier to
justify if you are using two providers for redundancy. The IP blocks can be
your own or provided by your ISP. The 3640s should be fine for the job. Yes,
work closely with your ISPs. Will you be getting the entire routing table or
just a partial?
Best of luck to you.

so I was thinking maybe like a 3640 or something like that. Also I know that
I have to obtain an AS number and have two paths to the internet. How hard
is it to get an AS number and what is the usual wait time to recieve it? I
also know that you have to work closely with your ISP's. Do I have to own my
own block of public IP addresses or can I use the ones from my ISP's and if
I only have IP's from one ISP should I use that as the main route? Am I
forgetting anything? Again I am a rookie when it comes to BGP so I could be
way off. Any kind of insight or direction would be great. I appreciate the
help

Thanks

Re: Newly Minted CCNP!! [7:10391]

2001-07-01 Thread Lori

Hi David,
Congratulations on your CCNP! I have one more exam to go and a quick
question. On the
support CIT exam, did you also have an exhibit like the BCRAN where you get
to pick the
command? I heard that on the support exam there's no exhibit and you have to
do it
letter-for-letter from memory. Is that true? That would kind of freak me
out. At least
with the list, you know the exact syntax, hyphens, etc.
This isn't an NDA question, just one on the format. Thanks, and
congratulations!

I took Remote Access yesterday. The testing method is vastly different
from
the other three. Tons of exhibits!!! Unlike the other test where you might
type in a few commands or pick a command and router mode from a list.
Cisco
decided to change things a bit. You still have a list of commands with no
router mode, but you must type in the command into the answer field. So
not
only do need to know the answer, but NOW accurate typing is required.
Know the ports of the routers mentioned in the CiscoPress book for Remote
 access.

All and all I am glad it is over. I just melted a hole in my VISA card
buying books for my CCIE Written and Lab studies. FYI: cheap books try
www.bestbookbuys.com. This website is the AltaVista or Google of book

Token Ring in home lab questions

2000-12-27 Thread Lori S Carter

Dug through the archives and found very little on setting up Token Ring in a home lab.
I'm still confused. How is this done? Any good sites that I can go to find out this
information?

Among other equipment, I've got an SMC MAU, a Token Ring NIC installed in a PC, DB-9
to RJ45 media filter, and a 2504. What type of cable do I need between the media
filter on the router and the MAU? I know it's not a standard Cat 5 cable because Token
Ring uses different pins than Ethernet. What about the cable between the PC and the
MAU? The NIC card can handle either RJ-45 or DB-9.

On the MAU, there are two ports that are labeled RO and RI with small push button
switches next to them to enable or disable "wrap". What are these for?

Any information would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Lori

PLCC tool and 4000M+ questions

2000-10-24 Thread Lori S Carter

1.)Does anybody know where I can get a PLCC (Plastic leaded chip carrier) extraction
tool so I can replace the boot roms in some 2500's. Or is there another way of
removing them without damaging them?

2.) Cisco's website and their technical staff claim that the 4000M+ can only handle
8MB of flash memory (two slots that can each handle a 4MB flash module)even with
upgraded boot roms installed. I find this hard to believe. Anybody ever upgraded the
4000M+ with more than 8MB flash or is it even possible?

PLCC Tool, 4000M+ Flash questions

2000-10-24 Thread Lori S Carter

Let's try this again. I sent this once but it didn't make it for some reason. I have
two questions. If anyone could answer them I would really appreciate it.

1.) I can't locate a PLCC (plastic leaded chip carrier) extraction tool to change some
boot rooms in some 2500's. Where can I get one or what can I safely use in place of it?

2.) Cisco's website and tech support claim that the 4000M+ can only handle 8 MB of
flash (4MB + 4MB in the slots). I find this hard to believe. Has anyone found out any
differently? This 4000M+ has the latest boot roms.

Thanks,
