RE: VPN3002 Network Extension Mode [7:32309]

2002-01-17 Thread McMasters, Eric

I'm rolling out an install for about 30 sites using the 3002 coming back to
a 3060 and I ran into a similar issue. I will insert this caveat that I am
not running network extension mode. Good ole' NAT/PAT for me...

Anyway, when I would monitor my sessions there was always one site that had
a zero in the Bytes TX section. I would try to reset the session and it
never worked. The Bytes RX counter would increment, but never the TX. I
finally checked the IP that was being assigned from the VPN pool and I
couldn't ping it either. Very strange, since the IP was in the middle of
the pool and all of the other address worked fine. Come to find out
everytime that a site would connect and get assigned this particular IP
address nothing would work. I duplicated the problem across several
different locations and all had the same result. I verified that the IP
address wasn't being used anywhere else in the network and I took some
Sniffer traces. Basically, the I could see traffic destined for the IP
address, but the 3060 would never respond. I ended up having to remove this
single IP address from my pool and everything works great now.

I currently have a TAC case w/Cisco to verify my findings and to find out
what the problem is. My guess is that it may be some sort of bug...actually
I'm surprised that TAC hasn't told me to upgrade my IOS yet! Sorry for the
longish post, but I thought it might be of some interest.

Subject: RE: VPN3002 Network Extension Mode [7:32309]

Hi,

I am using the exact same setup between 2 of our offices. In fact, it
works
so good, I am able to put a VoIP call from my office in NY to an office
in
Malaysia over the VPN. It is amazing.
We were able to save my company almost 6k a month by dropping the
frame-relay ;-)

Here's the thing...
You should have no problem pinging the concentrator from 3002, or vice
versa. You should be able to do this whether or not the tunnel is
established. These are both public addresses, and if you can't ping
from
one side to the other, you won't be able to establish the tunnel in the
first place.

Remember that each side has a public and private address. You need to
put
the concentrator's public IP address in the 3002 client's IPsec
settings.
Then setup a group and username for the 3002 client on the concentrator
and
you should be home free.
Once that tunnel is established, you should be able to ping the private
address of the concentrator / client as well as all the machines behind
it
from either side.

Did you put the concentrator or client behind a firewall or did you put
it
parallel to the firewall?

Also, you might want to check a machine from each side with a tracert to
a
machine on the other side to see how the packets are moving. If you do
a
tracert from a workstation on the client side, you should first see your
3002 client address. Then see your concentrator address. Finally the
destination machine you did the tracert to.
If the packets are not attempting to go in this direction, it is most
likely
a routing error on the gateway or a router.

Good luck and I hope this helped a bit :-)
   Regards,

RE: Sniffers [7:31296]

2002-01-08 Thread McMasters, Eric

I've always used the Dolch products. I believe the one that I've used was a
Dolch 64. You can get a variety of network card for it from 10/100, Token
Ring, FDDI, and ATM. Of course the prices will vary depending on the cards,
memory, etc, but they usually run around 10-15K. Not cheap, but it comes in
a hardend case which packs up nicely for easy transportation. You can see
their entire line at www.dolch.com.

Of course if you are looking for something a little bit more inexpensive you
could always get a copy of Etherpeek and load it on a PC. I've been using
it of late and it works really well. You can take a look at it at
www.wildpackets.com. You can also download a 30 day evaluation copy just to
check out.

Hope this helps!

Hey gang,

Servers database became corrupt thus preventing messages from being sent
out. It has been fixed so if you do not see your posting, please resend. I
have shipped more memory to InFlow. Lon has agreed to install it for us.
This should help. So by the way, the server will be down for a little
while tomorrow :-)

The truth is we desperately need some better equipment. Currently we are
using a server I built for $500 dollars two years ago. I purchased a used
Dell Server but need to upgrade the RAID array and a few other things before
putting it online.

Take care,

Weird sniffer issue... [7:22273]

2001-10-05 Thread McMasters, Eric

Okay I know that you may be getting sick of my sniffer questions since this
is the second one this week, but I've never seen this before, so here goes.

I'm using good ole' Etherpeek and while monitoring a network I started
getting duplicate IP address errors. After further investigation Etherpeek
shows the MAC address of the router as the conflicting MAC. This is
happening on several servers supposedly having a duplicate address as the
router interface on the same segment. I have never ran into this problem
before, so I thought that I would ask the experts. What is causing this to
happen and why?

I'm starting to think that computers are the work of the devil! Routers and
switches to a lesser extent...

TIA,
Eric

Network utilization levels... [7:21884]

2001-10-03 Thread McMasters, Eric

To all,
I'm monitoring a network and I'm seeing high network utilization
levels on the main (only) network segment. My question is that I've always
heard the rule is 60-70% and your in trouble and can start experiencing
network degradation. Now my question is where can I find this in writing?
I've been searching CCO and other Internet sites for the better part of a
day now and I haven't found anything stating what percentage falls within
the best practices / industry standard arena.

I know that I have read this info in books, but again I think it just states
this as a rule of thumb. I know all networks are different and the
saturation number may change depending on how many collisions are occurring
etc., but I'm at a loss trying to find this info anywhere. Any assistance
would be greatly appreciated!!! Thanks and I hope everyone has a great
day!!

The errors are stating that certain process CSAuth, CSMon, CSTacacs, are

is this just something that has to be with NT and ACS v2.1? Any advice is

Cisco 7400 router... [7:12275]

2001-07-13 Thread McMasters, Eric

I was just wondering if anyone out there has had a chance to work on this
new box. I was poking around CCO yesterday and this seems like a very cool
router, but I was just curious if anyone has actually worked with it. It
looks like it is using the same NPE processor that you can get with the 7200
and it uses the same PAMs, but is it as stable? According to CCO the thing
is only 12in. deep which would put it on the scale of a 2600 series router.
Pretty cool to pack that much power and flexibility into a small box.
Anyway, thanks for any information you may have!!

RE: Cisco 7400 router... [7:12275]

2001-07-13 Thread McMasters, Eric

The PAMs are the same and it has two built in 10/100/1000 ports. There is
one version that will only use the LAN PAMs, but the processor is the NSE-1,
which is the high-end 7200 processor. It also does the Parallel eXpress
Forwarding (PXF), which Cisco is marketing as out performing non-PXF
processors from 50-300%! Now we all know what to think of those wonderful
marketing numbers, but it is still a pretty impressive box that will support
over 40 different PAMs from a DS0 to OC-3. Not bad if you ask me...anyway,
it only matters if it will actually DO what Cisco says it will.
Laterzzz

What I've found on CCO is that there are actually three flavors of this box.
One is for Broadband functions, the second is a CPE edge device, and the
third is a gateway box that only supports the LAN PAMs. The PXF will also
provide accelerated performance for NAT, ACLs , LLQ, CAR, and NetFlow
accounting. It can also provide VPN and firewall (IOS) functionality.
Pretty interesting

Setting up site to site w/two PIXes is very similar to setting it w/two

Q1. Yes, and it's relatively simple because two Cisco routers have the same
default values for the crypto attributes, so the 'tunnel' comes right up if
the pre-shared keys are the same.

Q2. I don't know because I've never done it between 2 PIXes.

Passed CCIE Written!! [7:9246]

2001-06-20 Thread McMasters, Eric

I just wanted to drop everyone a line and say that I passed my CCIE Written
today on the first try!! It was pretty much what I was expecting, but there
were those obscure areas that got me. Just to go ahead and beat the rush of
email asking what I used to study here ya' go

Bridges, Routers, and Switches for CCIEs - Bruce Caslow (Read it from cover
to cover, good read)
TCP/IP Vol. I - Jeff Doyle (Ah, the networking bible came through. I just
skimmed certain areas)
Boson CCIE Exams 1, 2, and 3 - (This was the first time that I've used a
Boson exam and I really liked them. I would recommend them to anyone.)
Interconnections - Radia Perlman (Need I say more)

All in all I spent around one to two months preparing for the exam, but I
could of probably taken it after the first month. I made a bet with my
co-workers concerning passing the first time and purchasing large amounts of
beer if I didn't, so I wanted to be over prepared.

I hope everyone is having as great of a day as I am, and as always I want to
profess my undying love for this forum and all that it brings to the table.
I've been a member for close to three years now and you learn something new
everyday. Unless your Howard and then you learn something new once a week
or so! Cheers!!

RE: Free CSIDS v2 BETA [7:6800]

2001-06-06 Thread McMasters, Eric

Jason,
Thanks for the info on the exam. I'm scheduled to take it on the 21st. I
just wanted to shed some light on the CPSM/IDS products. The IDS Director
software from what I could find was the original software that NetRanger
used. It would plug in with HPOV, but Cisco is phasing the Director
software out and moving everything to the good ole' Policy Manager platform.
As it stands right now CSPM will only run on NT, but according to Cisco a
version for W2k is on the roadmap. If I had to guess the Director
software portion of the exam will be minimal, since they are moving away
from that platform.

I don't have any exp. installing the 6k blade, so that will all be new to me
as well. Where did you get this info, and could you post a link if
possible?

I just finished an install w/CSPM and IDS, and all I have to say is that
they are a long way from having a centralized management platform that will
take care of their entire Cisco Secure product line, which is what they are
marketing. I spoke with some people at Cisco and the CSPM development team
is separated into two groups, one for IDS and one for firewalls. That is
where the CSPM 2.3(i) and (f) come into play.

If you install 2.3(i) you get all of the cool IDS reporting features, which
is what anyone that installed an IDS wants. The draw back is that CSPM
won't automatically detect firewall configs, which sucks if you already have
firewalls deployed. This also means that you have to make all
configuration/IOS changes through CSPM, and the last thing is that CSPM
doesn't support any PIX IOS above 5.3!

If you install 2.3(f) you get all of the new firewall functionality, where
it will go out and detect existing firewall configurations etc., and it does
support newer IOS versions. You still can manage all of your firewall
configurations/IOS upgrades through CSPM, but if you need to make a change
via CLI you can and then just force CSPM to update itself with these new
changes. Draw back...you lose all of your IDS reporting functionality. You
can still setup an IDS and have it doing all of your shunning, tcp resets,
etc., but you just won't be able to get automated reports. This means that
you will have to go to the CSPM box and physically go through the IDS viewer
and look at all violations. This could take hours based on how the IDS is
setup to monitor.

On the bright side there is a new version of CSPM (v3 I think), which is
again on the roadmap. This version is suppose to merge all of the
functionality of 2.3(i) and (f) into a single platform. When this happens
CSPM will actually be able to perform what Cisco has been marketing.

AnywayI'll get off my soapbox now! I hope that this provided some
useful information to someone! I hope everyone has a great day, even though
it's raining in KC!!

The title of the test is Intrusion Detection System with Policy Manager so
I would assume: CSPM(i) and/or UNIX Director managing IDS Sensors (plus the
new Catalyst 6000 IDS blade). Basically, the IDS line.

Having taken it today, I can say those were in fact the topics. Very, very
hard test. I feel I know the CSPM(f i) and IDS Sensor portion fairly well
(having spent the last two weeks labbing it at home, and Thursday and Friday
on an actual customer install), and scored only marginally on those sections
due to the detail in some areas (usually I could narrow it to 2 answers). A
lot of it I could do better on if I had more items memorized (directory path
info, etc.).

Having never touched, nor seen documentation on the UNIX Director, I could
only guess on those questions. HP OpenView is used by this product as well.
(I'll be researching both topics so I can pass the CSIDS v1 test for my
company' Advanced Security Specialization Certification, which only requires
me to pass this test to go from our current Security Specialization
Certification). If I didn't know better, I'd say the UNIX Director line was
getting phased out just looking on Cisco's IDS section (it's not linked nor
mentioned, but you can find it with a UNIX Director search).

I have documentation/hands-on lab material for the Catalyst 6000 minime
blade, but never read through it. Can you believe it runs on NT4? That's
about the only detail I recall (you never touch the GUI interface, all CLI).

I used this test as a minor prep for the CSIDS v1 test and had no time to
prepare for it (I was 20 minutes late to the test as is). My guess is that
this test will replace the CSIDS v1 test (which as been around for some
time, but previously wasn't a requirement for the Security Specialist Cert).

184 questions, 3.5 hours. I was done in 1.5 hours and I went slow and
steady and made comments on the items I knew and had info to add/disagree
on. 12 weeks from the test close date (June

Too bad your not staying in KC because I have a rack I would sell you!
Anyway, I found that music stores that sell amps/mixers usually sell those
type of boxes with the racks built in. I did some checking and they are
pretty reasonable and would fit the need. Anyway while your in KC you have
to hit the BBQ joints, like KC Masterpiece, Gates, Boardroom BBQ, and just
about every other place listed in the phone book. Also, I'm not sure where
your coming from, but it's cold here...25-40 degrees without wind chill.
Hope you have a good time in KC!

Subject: Router Flight Cases

Hi, all,

Y'all recall that I posted a few weeks ago for a router cabinet. Well, I
got some good leads, and then my circumstances have changed...again. I
will be spending alot of time in KC in a corporate apartment for the next
2-8 months, so rack mounting my routers at home won't do me any good. I
want to take them with me on the plane to my new quarters.

Does anyone know where I can buy one of those flight cases with the 19 inch
rack inside that are about 3-4 feet high, and can can hold about 8 2500
sized routers? (The AGS will be staying at home.) I plan on taking my
routers with me so that I can while the hours away with study. The case I
am looking for is very similar to what the instructors use to transport
their routers from class to class. Most of us have seen them: the
instructor pops the top and inside are the cabled routers ready for use.

I have been all over the web, and can not find exactly what I need. I don't
even know if flight case is the right word.

TIA,

Charles

Broadband Wireless...

Hey there everyone I was wondering if anyone had any good resources, such as
white papers, etc on broadband wireless technology. I'm looking for both
high level documentation and some down and dirty stuff also, so that I can
become familiar with this technology. I've been checking out the Cisco site
and found some info on their product line, but I'm looking for something
more along the lines of tech docs. Any assistance would be greatly

RE: 4 books for $6 - check it out.

2000-11-09 Thread McMasters,Eric

I was a member of this club and I think it was a pretty good deal. You only
had to buy one or two more books at regular club prices and then your
obligation was over. Also, every time you signed someone up under you they
got the discounted books and they you could pick up to $120 or 3 books for
free (minus SH). Their prices are cheaper than most on-line book stores,
you don't need a credit card to pay or sign-up. They are slow (3-4 weeks)
when delivering, but I think it's worth it for the price you pay for the
books. As far as the monthly book card that comes, you can decline the book
on the website and you can actually decline 3-4 months in advance. I'm not
a member anymore, since it has been awhile since I ordered a book, but for
someone who wants to start building a library then this is a good way to
start without making a significant investment. In my particular case I
received around 15 books for the $9.99 you pay for the initial set, and then
buy getting some friends to sign up. I bough a couple of books at member
prices and then I was finished, and SH wasn't that bad. If I remember
correctly SH was usually less than $20 for 2-3 books. Now you add that to
the $9.99 you paid and you couldn't get one of those books for that price.
Just my $.02. Hope this clarifies some of it for everyone.

RE: CatOS or IOS?

2000-09-27 Thread McMasters, Eric

When we started purchasing 6509's our Cisco NSA Engineer advised us not to
use the integrated IOS because there are some major bugs that are associated
with it that have not been addressed. Now this was a couple of months ago,
so maybe these issues have been addressed, but I would do some investigating
first. If you are familiar with the Cat OS then I would go in that
direction and wait for the integrated IOS to become more stable. Just my 2

I'm getting "not bad" at searching CCO.

However, I've drawing a blank try to find a link that will explain the
feature set for Service Provider IOS.

I found out by accident that Service Provider IOS doesn't include bridging
as the routers in our lab have SP and when I tried to configure "bridge 1

Sure enough, do a ? at conf t and no "bridging" stuff is there.

So, can anyone point me to the feature set for Service Provider IOS?

RE: Exam for CCDP Cert

2000-09-26 Thread McMasters, Eric

At the tracking site they have two separate certs, CCDP 1.0 and 2.0. All of
the certs are good for 3 years before you have to recertify. That is at
least what the tracking site shows. My suggestion would be to take get the
CCNP 2.0 and then take the CID 3.0 (640-025), so you can be a CCDP 1.0 and
then when the replacement comes out for the CID exam take the new beta and
then you should be good to go on the CCDP 2.0 path...if you pass the beta.
That's what I'm planning on doing at least. Hope that helps.

The 2.0 path lists the 025 exam.

You only get to be a CCDP 1.0 though which probably means you recertify in

recertification required, do not pass go, do not collect $200, you are now a
CCNP 2.0.

The only exams that require upgrades are the 640-4XX exams in the CCDP
track. Check the certification page FAQ.

I thought that Cisco is using the CID #640-025 for the 2.0 track. I read
somewhere on the site that it counts towards the 2.0 certification. It is
only slated for a future update, but for now.

The 2.0 path lists the 025 exam.

Just the one i.e. CID #640-025, try the Sybex Book by Robert Padjen ISBN
0782126391 which got a few good comments on the group, but apparently the
Exam is a pig!
You only get to be a CCDP 1.0 though which probably means you recertify in
two not three years.

Certificate and card yes. You can download the logo after accepting an

that anymore. Here is a link to the Certification FAQ's site. The
questions that you asked are addressed in questions # 16 - 18. Hope this

Does anyone know where I could get a good price on a new or used WIC (serial
or 56K CSU/DSU) for a Cisco1600.
I don't have a large amount of funds for my CCNA study lab and I found 3
1602s for less than I would like to mention so I couldn't pass them up. The
prices for new serial WICs I have seen are about $300.

Most study guide labs I have seen expect 2500s or better and so they often
use 2 serial connections. 1600s have only one but include one WIC slot.

Any leads would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

RE: You can call yourself and internetworking engineer when . . . .

2000-08-08 Thread McMasters, Eric

That also falls in-line with when we wanted to see what "debug all" would do
on the core router. After about a minute of continuous logging messages it
just stopped working. Again we had to reboot the router and we were somehow
able to blame it on the server guys! "Sir, the NT servers were generating
excessive broadcasts which filled the routers buffers and forced it to shut
down. You know Sir you really should talk to those server guys about
configuring their equipment right." Ah the good ole' days, huh Mike!!!

Too funny. I can think of one incident about 4 years back when I was in the
military and we didn't know anything about configuring cisco equipment. A
friend of mine who lurks on this list like me (you know who you are Eric)
and myself were trying to play a prank on a fellow co-worker and block
traffic on his computer. We thought of an ACL to block his IP address but
he was smart enough to change it if we did that. So we settled on creating
a filter by mac address. The problem was we couldn't apply it to the
interface so after a little reading we figured the interface needed to be in
a bridge group to apply this ACL. Now, this interface was serving our
entire building which was the Communications Squadron for the base.
Needless to say when when everyone in the building started yelling we
rebooted it and blamed it on a software crash on the router (hey these
things happen:)...

(tongue firmly in cheek)

I have this theory that you can call yourself and internetworking
engineer when . . . .

1. You have run a debug command on a customer router while
investigating a performance problem, or perhaps a security issue, and
you have caused the CPU to exceed 100% and the router has hung/crashed.

2. You have edited an ACL remotely and reapplied it only to find you
have blocked all traffic including telnet from your desk and you are
now locked out.

3. In both of the above scenarios you have made up some story for the
Help Desk/1st Line Support and asked them to get the customer to reboot
the router, claiming that "a reboot may help the performance problem .
. blah . . blah"

4. In each of points 1 2 the customer in question is a major account
that has threatened legal action against your company for failing to
maintain SLAs, or to close the account altogether.

Does this sound familiar to anyone? Have you every felt that cold
feeling in the pit of your stomach when you entered a command and the
screen froze? Did you blame hardware/software/customer/gremlins i.e.
anybody and anything but not yourself?

;-)

RE: 3640 memory question

2000-07-27 Thread McMasters, Eric

John,
By default the 3600 series does a 75/25 split of the DRAM and
allocates the 75% to processor memory and the 25% to I/O memory. This can
be changed to reflect a 70/30, 60/40, or a 50/50 split of this memory. The
I/O memory is automatically adjusted to reflect the modules that are
installed and the IOS feature set that is being used. Here is a link that
has a better explanation of this and when it should be changed. Hope this
helps.

To my knowledge Cisco has no plans to retire CID. In
fact, it is likely that this exam will become more
important with the CCIE Design track. Normally Cisco
takes about six months from the announcement of a beta
to retire a test, so (presumably) we're looking at the
current test until 2001. Note, the current test
objectives are dated and based on course materials
from 1997, so it would be a good idea to prepare for
the exam outside of 'current' activities.

OSPF question...

2000-06-08 Thread McMasters, Eric

Okay I have been looking for this answer and I still can't find it, so I am
bringing my question to all of the OSPF guru's that reside on this list.

Here is what I want to know.
I know that you can run multiple routing processes on a single router, i.e.
router ospf 1 and router ospf 2
Now will the networks that are configured under the each of these processes
know about networks in the other process, without redistributing?
Will they maintain separate routing tables?
If so, will all the routes be displayed when issuing the "show ip route"
command?

I just want to know if the networks that are configured under each process
will be logically separated on the router, or will they share the same
routing table? I'm getting frustrated, since I can't find the answer and
the 6 cups of coffee that I've already had aren't helping mattersI
appreciate any and all responses, and the time that you take in reading my
caffeine induced rants and raves..thank you!

RE: HSRP Question

2000-06-06 Thread McMasters, Eric

My interpretation of the examples that are presented are that the first
configuration will work, but will the second. Now, I am by no means an
expert, but I found in my handy dandy "Internetwork Troubleshooting
Handbook" where their example does not include the standby group number. I
also read that by not using a group number (ie 1, in this case) the standby
group would default to "0", and it would work. Could somebody please verify
this for me, because I would hate to propogate incorrect information.

OT: Cisco question...

I just had a quick question to pose to the group and I apologize for it
being OT. My question is this: What level of agreement do you have to have

a job in my area, but when I told them who I worked for they said "sorry we
can't talk to you" and that was that. I know why they have this agreement,
but I'm just curious at what level (Silver, Gold, etc) this comes into
effect, or is it on a case by case basis? Thanks in advance for any and all

New CCNP v.2!!!

2000-06-03 Thread McMasters, Eric

I just wanted to drop the list a line so that I could thank everyone for
helping me achieve CCNP yesterday. I successfully completed the Support 2.0
exam, which now makes me a newly minted CCNP v2. I would just like to
express my gratitude to the people on this list and there are too many to
name, so I will just extend my thanks to everyone who participates in this
forum.

Now I'll just say this...the test was 75 min. 61 questions, but these new
tests are variable from 60-70 questions, so the passing score varies also.
I had the CIT course in February, so I just used the flash cards at
Priscilla's site to brush up, and I must say that those flash cards rock the
casba! I would suggest that anyone that is taking the exam spend a couple
of hours there just as a refresher or to brush up because it helps! Anyway
thanks to everyone and now to relax and enjoy my weekend and drink a beer or
10! Then to start over and start reading some CID books. I'm going to take
that one by the end of the month! Livin' La Vida Loca!!!

In fact one guys tried to turn on RIP in our lab and couldn't figure out why
it wouldn't work. So I took a look at it and told him it would work much
better if he specified a network under the RIP process. I don't know about
some people, but I would have a problem working with someone who is
supposedly "Cisco certified", but couldn't accomplish a simple task like
turning on RIP. I'm just glad that these guys are working on Unix boxes and
not routers! On the other hand I work with a guy that has a great deal of
experience, but failed the test because he wasn't familiar with the question
format. It works both ways sometimes. The best way to overcome this is to
cover both areas so that you won't be left in the dark. Just my .02 cents!

Get my point? A co-worker just passed the test today using some practice
tests and a few study notes..I dont think he's ever even touched a router.

BSCN Beta Results...

2000-05-25 Thread McMasters, Eric

To All,
I've been trying to post this for the past three days, so if it is
duplicate for some I apologize in advance. The results were posted last
Friday and I already received my score sheet from Sylvan, so to say the
least I was surprised that I passed. I just wanted to pose a question to
the people on this list with this question. Is it possible that the Beta
tests are actually easier than the exam once it goes live? I have been
reading that everyone has passed these Beta exams, but I have not heard of
one person that has failed. Is this just a fluke? I just can not believe
that I passed the Remote Access, Switching, and Routing Beta exams and
didn't even study or crack a book. I just planned on taking them to see
what the test were going to be like. I have my CIT scheduled for next week
(I would of taken it also, but I couldn't get a time), so hopefully by the
end of the month I'll be a CCNP. I've read some posts on the CID that
aren't that encouraging, so I think I'll actually buy a book and study that.
Let me know what you think about this and maybe shed some light on the whole
thing for me. Thanks for everyone's help!
