RE: Voice Over Internet [7:61467]

2003-01-21 Thread Pierre-Alex Guanel
Hi Neil,

I am doing voice over IP over the Interet with one remote location
with a 512k ADSL connection and VPN with PPTP. The voice quality is
extremely good, with no echos, delays etc... I am using netmeeting for the
voice over ip application and Windows 2000 server on both location as the
VPN servers. Clients are Windows 2000 Professional workstations.

Please check my logic: ospf / frame-relay / broadcast [7:60715]

2003-01-09 Thread Pierre-Alex GUANEL
On a non broadcast network, using the keyword neighbour will allow the DR
to start the adjacency with the indicated neighbours. Once the adjacency is
completed, all ospf traffic between neighbours will be unicast. Therefore on
such networks, you do not need to add the keyword broadcast on the
frame-relay map statement for OSPF to work.

[ However not having the keyword broadcast may affect other network
functions that depend on the broadcast traffic, therefore it is a good idea
to put the keyword broadcast in the frame-map statement].

Any flaw in my logic?

Evidence: (you can see here that r1 is sending to r2 (10.10.1.2 ) , r3
(10.10.1.3) and r5 (10.10.10.5) via unicast. You can see that r2 is

Happy New Year group study members ...

Is anyone currently studying for the CCIE Lab in the UK?

I have 9 Cisco routers / ISDN simulator / most of the CCIE Preparation
library and plenty of hands-on experience under my belt and 12 PC to
generate plenty of traffic.

I am looking for a study partner with ATM, Catalyst 3550 switches and Voice
Equipment or someone willing to share the expense of buying those gears.

Please contact me off-line if you are interested.

My lab is scheduled for October 29 2003.

Catalyst 1600 Token Ring Report - [7:56671]

2002-11-01 Thread Pierre-Alex Guanel
After a very long trial and error procedure and a bit of luck, I finally
figured this switch out!

There are no commands to setup VLANS from the command-line on this switch.

You must use the TrueView Manager software which is available for free
download

at: http://www.madge.com/downloads-software-archived.asp

Once on the page above, you want to download from the link: Smart
Ringswitch Software R4.3 - Dec 00 (for RS Plus and RS Express only)

When you open the download, the software will install automatically. The
rest is obvious

Pierre-Alex

NB. This switch run the same code as the SmartRing Switch from Madge. If
want a full documentation of the Cisco 1600 Token Ring Switch (since Cisco
Documentation on this Switch is very slim), you should go to the Madge Web
site.

BGP Best Path Algorithm -- Trick [7:56356]

2002-10-26 Thread Pierre-Alex Guanel
OK, from Cisco http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/459/25.shtml

Step 3: Prefer the path that was locally originated via a network or
aggregate BGP subcommand, or through redistribution from an IGP. Local paths
sourced by network/redistribute commands are preferred over local aggregates
sourced by the aggregate-address command.

Step 4: Prefer the path with the shortest AS_PATH

Step 5: Prefer the path with the lowest origin type: IGP is lower than EGP,
and EGP is lower than INCOMPLETE

My question: In step 3 if a path is locally originated within a AS, it's
path will always be shorter than any path learned through over means.

So what is the rational for this step? I bet it is used in some trick
configuration and I admit I have run out of imagination...

Any hint would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Pierre-Alex

RE: Outlets England [7:53864]

2002-10-08 Thread Pierre-Alex Guanel

Great Britain Wiring

I got to England after a long 15-hour trip ...

On my arrival I immediately went to a Electric shop to buy British Power
Cord.

Those are relatively cheap about 2 pounds something each, but I needed 12 of
those for my equipment.

The lad other there was very kind, he told me that I could make my own cord
from my American Power cord

using a socket that only cost half a pound. Here how it goes in England:

Green or Yellow is grown
Blue or Blank is neutral
Brown or Red is live

The process is pretty simple but quite time consumming: with a sharp knife
to strip the wires, a flat screw driver
and a Philips screw driver I made a plug every 10 minutes)

I also bought surge protectors at the store. They are not cheap out there
(about 8 pounds for a 4-plugs surge protector
and 12 pounds for 6-plugs).

Basically my total cost of conversion was: 6 pounds for the plugs + 48
pounds for the surge protectors (less than $100) ...

the expected result:

Then I cleared R2. R2 did not get the extra route. Here is R2

RE: Fwd: Re: BGP loop [7:51169]

2002-08-11 Thread Pierre-Alex Guanel

Hey Pete,

Thanks for the explaination. It does make sense now!

There were two things I was not aware of:

1) Routers prefers the EBGP routes due to E vs I preference
2) You are only allowed to advertise your best path for a particular NLRI

I went back to my books and tried to find references on the first point.
This is what I found: (Doyle, TCP IP vol2 : page 115)

1) Prefer path with the highest administrative weight
2) Prefer path with highest Local_Pref value
3) Prefer path originated locally i.e. from an IGP
4) Prefer path with shortest AS_Path
5) Prefer path with lowerst origin code
6) Prefer path with lowest multi_exit_disc value
7) Prefer EBGP paths over IBGP path
8) Prefer path with shortest path to bgp next_hop
9 install equal-cost routes in the Loc-RIB (maximum-path enabled)
10)prefer path with lowest BGP router ID (maximum-path not enabled)

There is no mention of EBGP path versus IBGP. Worse, if I was to go by the
rules above I would have to conclude that R4 should have chosen the path via
AS102 because of the highest LocPref. (see below)

R4sib
BGP table version is 3, local router ID is 192.168.250.4
Status codes: s suppressed, d damped, h history, * valid, best, i -
internal
Origin codes: i - IGP, e - EGP, ? - incomplete

Network Next HopMetric LocPrf Weight Path
* 172.16.0.0   10.10.4.2  0 100 101 i
* i 10.10.2.1 100  0 102 101 i

There must be a set of rules out there that precede the rules above ...
Where did you learn about those? Are they published some place?

Thanks,

Pierre-Alex

RE: Fwd: Re: BGP loop [7:51169]

2002-08-11 Thread Pierre-Alex Guanel

Hi Pete,

Here is the reference for rule 2: You are only allowed to advertise your
best path for a particular NLRI

Internet Routing Architecture (Second Edition), Sam Halabi page 155

The best routes, as identified by the decision process, are placed in the
Loc-RIB. These routes become candidates that can be advertised to other
peers or placed in the IP routing table. If a route is not placed int he
Loc-RIB, it cannot be placed in the Adj-RIB-Out for advertisement to peers

Still looking for a reference to Rule 1

Re: break via reverse telnet [7:51192]

2002-08-11 Thread Pierre-Alex Guanel

That's correct... If you want to use a different escape character use the
command escape-character followed by the ASCII number
Example:

config t
line vty 0 4
escape-character 1

where:

1=A
2=B
3=C

etc...

BGP loop [7:51169]

2002-08-10 Thread Pierre-Alex Guanel

This is the network:

AS101(R1) --- AS102 (R2) --- AS103 (R3)--- (R4)-AS100(R0) to AS101
(R1)

(R3 and R4 are IBGP neighbors)

I have route 172.16.0.0 on AS101 (R1) that is advertised via BGP.
When i do a show ip bgp, the only routers that have two paths to
172.16.0.0 are R3 and R4. R0 and and R2 only have on path

Given that I have a loop, I would have expected R0 to also have a path to
172.16.0.0 via As103 and R2 to also have a path to 172.16.0.0 via AS103.

Do I have a configuration problem or is this the default behavior of BGP
that it won't accept another path if it already has the information from a
directly connected neighbor? Is this to prevent loops?

Frame-Relay NNI -- [7:49849]

2002-07-26 Thread Pierre-Alex Guanel

My frame-relay switch died, so I put 2 1700 routers back-to-back to get
enough interfaces.

I made sure to use the interface type nni between the two 1700, yet it
looks like the two frame-relay switches are not talking to each other.

Anyone try this trick before. This is what I get:

Bus Error [7:49592]

2002-07-24 Thread Pierre-Alex Guanel

I have had bus errors on my Cisco 4000 router.

I ran a memory diagnostic on memory addresses 0x0004
to 0x067F which should have covered tests for DRAM lower location,
boot EPROM, Flash EPROM, and DRAM upper location as well as Onboard
ressources and system IO

The result of the test seems to indicate that my DRAM (lower location) is OK
but that the main board of the router is defective?

Is my interpretation correct?

Voice of IP / Frame-Relay and remote labs [7:48947]

2002-07-16 Thread Pierre-Alex Guanel

I am about to start studying Voice topics for the CCIE lab

How does one test that a call has actually been placed succesffuly when
doing remote-labs? Or maybe this is not possible and you actually have to
buy the gears to see the stuff working ...

I bet you would neeed some type of robot to pickup the phone (just
kidding).

Thanks,

Pierre-Alex

would be missing quite a lot in doing a voice lab other the Internet. Are my
assumptions correct? Or am I just paranoid ...

Thank you,

RE: Benchmark CCIE [7:47320]

2002-06-25 Thread Pierre-Alex Guanel

Thank you for the Tips Bernard. I will change my bad habits :)

Just curious... When you configure your routers do you enter all the
commands in global config mode, then interface mode, then router mode
? Or do you configure the routers according to the sequence in which the
router operates (for example: Layer 1, Layer 2, Layer 3)?

I have found that when I configure my routers the second way, I feel much
more in control of what is going on (because the config is logical). The
down side is that I take much more time because I am some how thinking about
the process while I am doing it.

On the other hand, when I configure from memory (i.e. all commands in global
mode, then interface mode ...) there is no internal dialog but things are
going much faster and I can keep within the timeline.

I would like to know how the folks who took the CCIE and those who are close
to taking it configure routers under time presure: memorization of configs
or sequence in which the router operates

Thanks,

Pierre-Alex

If you were running RIP it could trigger the link ...

2002-06-14 Thread Pierre-Alex Guanel

From router B, I pinged a boggus destination. This triggered the bri
interface on router B. Here is the output of the debug dialer events from
Router A. You can see that router A (for no apparent reason) is trying to
call router B (even though it is router B who initiated the call.) Of course
the result of this is that the isdn timers will time out because the only
channel available is busy with the call initiated by router B.

Why would router A attempt to call the next hop? (172.16.1.2)

Sending 5, 100-byte ICMP Echos to 1.2.3.6, timeout is 2 seconds:

You have default routes pointed towards one another. You ping an address
that doesn't exist on either router. The first sends it off to the second.
The second doesn't know what to do with it so sends it on to its default
which is the first.

I do agree with your statements ... However, what is the need to open a
second channel when there is one already opened? Shouldn't Router A use the
already existing channel?

Re: ISDN -- challenge! [7:46496]

2002-06-14 Thread Pierre-Alex Guanel

Ok, here are the result of my tests (cummulative)

1) I gave the loopbacks unique IP addresses and tested

result: no change

2) I assigned isdn1 f0/0 to vlan11 and isdn f0/0 to vlan12
on isdn1 f0/0 ip address was 192.168.10.1/24
on isdn2 f0/0 ip address was 192.168.20.1/24

I left the default route unchanged on both routers and tested

result: no change

3) I remove the default route and created specific routes instead

on isdn1: ip route 192.168.10.0 255.255.255.0 172.16.1.2
on isdn2: ip route 192.168.20.0 255.255.255.0 172.16.1.1

result: no change. When the first bri channel was up, I was able to ping nor
the two fast ethernet interfaces nor the two bri interface. Strange!!!

4) I added the keyword name to each map statement (as suggested by Gaz)

on isnd1:dialer map ip 172.16.1.2 name isdn2 broadcast 5554000
on isdn2:dialer map ip 172.16.1.1 name isdn1 broadcast 5551234

result: double success. RouterA (isdn1) did not try to initiate another
connection AND I was able to ping the fast ethernet interfaces and the bri
interfaces.

See below:

isdn2#ping 192.168.10.1

Type escape sequence to abort.
Sending 5, 100-byte ICMP Echos to 192.168.10.1, timeout is 2 seconds:

03:55:06: %LINK-3-UPDOWN: Interface BRI0/0:1, changed state to up.
01:12:32: BR0/0:1 DDR: dialer protocol up.!!!
Success rate is 60 percent (3/5), round-trip min/avg/max = 32/32/32 ms

state to
up
03:55:09: %LINEPROTO-5-UPDOWN: Line protocol on Interface BRI0/0:1, changed
state to
up

Now that the problem is solved (thanks Gaz, Daniel, Ahoang and Thomas), we
need to understand the reasons for the behavior of router A . To summarize:

1) Without the name keyword, routerA attempts to initiate a connection on
receiving a connection initiated by router B.

2) Once the channel setup from B is up, data traffic does not flow even with
proper routes.

My gut feeling is that name keyword is preventing data traffic to flow
between the two routers , even when the channel is up! This would explain
why routeA is attempting to open a new connection even though there is a
channel already up. routerA must be thinking that it is not allowed to use
the already existing channel to reply to router B ... but then it would mean
that something must have leaked from A to B to prone routerA to initiate a
connection ...
but what if not ip data?

I will do some more research on this and post my findingsremaksquestions
in a next post.

I have a question regarding switches. Can I connect multiple hosts together
on a single switch?
I though switches can only perform layer 2 switching and not layer 3
routing. Am I right?

CCIE RS vs CCIE Design [7:46173]

2002-06-09 Thread Pierre-Alex Guanel

A question to the current CCIE RS and CCIE Design engineers.

How much design do I need to learn for the CCIE RS?

Obviously not as much as the CCIE Design. But where do I draw the line?

How much is too much, taking in consideration that I am planning

to sit for the lab 9 to 12 months from now.

Thank you,

Frame-Relay - [7:46076]

2002-06-07 Thread Pierre-Alex Guanel

Sorry for posting this again

Please check my logic on this frame-relay traffic shaping scenario:

My Bc is 8,000 bits
My Be is 16,000 bits
My CIR is 64 Kbps

If I send 1 burst of 56,000 bits then 4 bursts of 4,000 bits, after the 4th
burst of 4,000 bits I will be able to burst again but not before that.
Correct?

Here is my rational (Assume no congestion in the frame-relay network):

During the first Tc interval, I send Bc+Be.
During the second, third and fourth interval I can no longer burst
because I have used all my burst credit.
At the end of the 4th Tc interval I have taken care of my first burst.

During the next four bursts, I am paying back so to speak on my credit
line because I am sending less than the CIR.
So on the 9th Tc interval I can burst again.

CCIE Written passed - Boson [7:45535]

2002-05-31 Thread Pierre-Alex Guanel

I took the CCIE written yesterday afternoon and passed (80%)

I was expecting more, but I flunked the performance/QoS section of the exam,
which I neglected somewhat during preparation.

I used both Boson #1 and Boson #3. Those 2 tests are complementary and are
NOT substitute for each other. Boson #3 focuses on SNA issues where as Boson
#1 focuses on the other networking topics.
If you can, you should purchase both tests.

For preparation I did a pre-test on Boson #3 and discovered how little SNA
and ATM I knew. For 3 weeks, I studied SNA and ATM using CCO + hands-on
until the whole thing felt natural. Then, on the 4th week of preparation I
repeated the same strategy with Boson #1. I dicovered 3 areas of networking
where I had some weaknesses. I only had time to work on 2 of them thoroughly
before the test.

Thank you to Bernard and Dennis for excellent test materials and to all
those who gracefully took the time to answer my questions. I particularly
want to thank Priscilla and Leigh Anne who both put me back on track several
times during the last two years and Daniel Cotts for squeezing some time out
of his busy schedule to spend some time discussing Cisco with me.

The IOS documentation has a section on QoS. Check CC0

Regarless of your method of preparation you need to take some test

to check your understanding. Boson was a great help in that matter.

Good luck on your exam.

TCP IP Sequence numbers [7:45131]

Dear Kris, Karago, Pierre-Alex, Chuck, Steven, Brian and everybody thanks
for helping me, I appreciate all your points. The conclusion I got it is to
leave EIGRP if I have no redundant link and go for Static routes therefore I
will save more bandwidth and not to be devil anymore.

To be honest I was thinking to configure the routers with static routes
from the beginning but I just gave myself a chance to try the EIGRP, its
really cool protocol and save much of the bandwidth if we compare it with
RIP or IGRP.

About my idea of choosing different subnets even with point to point HDLC is
because in the beginning I tried to configure the three fast Ethernet
interfaces with the same subnet 129.19.10.xx but the link does not work with
me, I tried to ping the sites but with no result so I decided to give them
different subnets, when I did that every thing works fine, I did not try to
give same subnet between each two HDLC interfaces, the time was so critical
as my customer wants the network to be active by any mean .

About the advice of Karago to Correct the Subnet Mask with /30, basically I
did not see a need of doing this as I am not service provider to conserve as
much as I can of what I have of IP addresses its private link and no ISP is
involved, that's why I did not confine myself with 4 bits at the end. Anyhow
its valuable advice and I will consider it in the future.

Bandwidth statement is really something I missed and I will configure it as
soon as I reach to the router terminal.

It's kind of a picky thing, but it's not accurate to say that the ACK
indicates the number of the next segment the host expects to receive.

TCP sequences bytes, not segments. The ACK number indicates the next byte
the hosts expects to receive. Of course, every segment has many bytes in
it. The Window field specifies how many bytes the host is ready to receive.

When host A sends acknowledgement number X to host B, why does B sets its
sequence number to X+1?

It doesn't. It sets the sequence number to the ACK number.

Where are you getting this info? It's not right.

The first thing I check when reading a description of TCP is whether they
know that bytes (not segments) are numbered. If they don't, I don't read
the rest. Also, be careful if they don't go beyond explaining the 3-way
handshake. Since the SYN, SYN ACK, and ACK packets don't actually have any
data bytes in them, the sequence number behaves a little differently. They
only go up by one, making it appear that segments are sequenced, rather
than bytes.

client sends: SYN initial seq number = 50
server sends: SYN initial seq number = 99, ACK = 51
client sends: ACK 100
client sends: bytes 51-100
server sends: ACK 101
client sends: bytes 101-150 ETC.

Actual size of packets depends on Max Segment Size (and how much data the
upper layer has to send). Actual number of packets sent before stopping and
waiting for ACK depends on the window size.

Check RFC 793, Stevens, Comer, many books other than pass the Cisco test
quick books. ;-)

Priscilla

I would expect B to set its sequence number to X,
since X is already the next segment number ...

thanks

Pierre-Alex

I would also add a bandwidth statement on the serial interfaces to specify

won't

You'd have to buy something like an Arca Technologies Emutel DUO which has

bit time [7:44142]

2002-05-14 Thread Pierre-Alex Guanel

I am looking for a good definition of bit time

I found on a networking encyclopedia that bit time is the same as bit rate
i.e. the ratio of the number of bits transferred between devices in a
specific amount of time, typically a second.

I am not satisfied by this definition. For example in the sentence The
active monitor holds the token for 24-bit time

how long is 24 bit times? (I am sure not one second!)

Thanks,

Pierre-Alex

Hi Pierre,

A bit-time is the time it takes to send a bit.

For 10Mb Ethernet a bit-time is a 100 nanoseconds (10 Megabit per second, so
1 bit per 100 nanoseconds), for Fast Ethernet it is 10 nanoseconds and so
on.

So if a workstation on a Fast Ethernet network were to wait 5 bit-times, it
actually waits 50 nanoseconds.

Hth,
Remmert

I've had TAC close cases that were not even close to being resolved. I
assume that there's some type of reward structure for closing cases

It seems to me that the clients should close the case because they are the

satisfaction ...

I don't have access to the TAC Case Tool kit because I have no contract

Buy some tr nics and put them on a pc, and a cheap tr hub. I am pretty sure
you can pick up a cabletron with a console cable pretty cheap on ebay.
Short a cable and have it connected and it will probably send a beacon
through the network. Mismatch the speeds and see what happens. Maybe, hard
code the same LAA to two nic and see if you can generate frame copy errors
by using a third pc. Maybe, you can send tons of packets to the hub and
generate congestion errors. Taking a pc off the ring should cause burst and
maybe token errors. If you had some TR routers around you could connect to
the hubs as well. The show controllers tokenring xx command will display tr
errors as well.

Not sure if you can have duplicate tokens because there is only one full
token allowed on the ring at the same time even with early token release
enabled.

You'll probably need a protocol analyzer to capture the frames. You will be
able to see the active monitor and the standby monitor packets and you'll be
able to see the election process too. And you'll be able to see how the bit
is flipped in a tr frame. Not sure what software though for TR. Sniffer
would work and if you have an OS2 workstation, Navtel would work.

RE: output buffers swapped out [7:41986]

Answer to my own question:

on 7500 routers when the transmit-buffers backing-store command is enabled
and the transmit queue is full, packets are swapped from the MEMD into DRAM.
If the command is not enabled (default) then packets are dropped. A high
occurrence of output buffers swapped out simply indicates a lot of
traffic. No problem there!

Then you type ati4 and enter (even if you don't see what you type)

Logging - terminal monitor not working [7:39957]

2002-03-30 Thread Pierre-Alex Guanel

Kind of a silly problem but can't figure it out ...

I am connected to R1 via telnet. I have turned on debugging of ip packets

I also have issued the command terminal monitor

Yet I do not get anything logged when I ping the Ethernet interface of R1

Any ideas?

Thanks

I am curious, what is the reason for logging synchronous preventing debug

Route-map - Boson - incorrect? [7:38553]

2002-03-16 Thread Pierre-Alex GUANEL

Here are two statements from BOSON and their associated answers:

When a Match is made, the Route Map can change the route with the map-tag

When a Match is made, the Route Map will change the route with the set
command. (FALSE)

(1) is there such a thing as a map-tag command. The Cisco documentation has
a match tag but nothing like a map-tag

http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/software/ios120/12cgcr/np1_r

(2) When a match is made doesn't the set command change the attribute of
the route.
Boson indicates in their test that this is a false statement.

Am I correct or is the test correct?

Thank you!

The CCNA is a joke. If a employer is requiring a CCNA or CCNP I would hope
that they would do a little research and understand what goes into getting
these certifications. Also, you need the CCNA to get your CCNP so I don't
see how the CCNA would be more attractive. I am not sure why Cisco has
changed the CCNP track again, maybe too many people are passing the exams.
However, I passed all the exams in just under 6 months and I thought that
self study and the books were plenty to get throught the exams. Also, the
500 or 600 dollars you spend is for advancement and marketability in our
industry. I feel the most qualified candidate for a job will have On The Job
Experience along with an education and certifications. Remember this is your

My comment is with the CCNP exams. When I started it was the 500 series,
which was not long ago, now its changing to the 600 series. For some
people it takes a while to pass a CCNP exam, so I have not had enough
time to get a lot done in the 500 series, let alone switch to 600. I
know the 600 is not out yet, but still. Also here is a question, why
would someone want to take the last exam in the CCNP series, because
when you take the last exam, your 2 year timer starts ticking. Where is
the motivation there? I think I am just going to work on the course
material, and not take the rest of the exams, $125 a pop is a lot, and
you're right there are so many exams. So for CCNP it would cost me $500.
Then if I wanted to do the security, another 400-500$, that saying if I
passed everything on the 1st go. Then the books and courseware. Then
re-certification, this is an expensive proposition.

And I don't see a significant salary increase for CCNP certification.
Like a regular experienced Network engineer with MCSE/CCNA makes say
like 60-85K. Well that is the same range as a CCNP would make. I donno,
the way some of these help wanted ads are written, you would think that
CCNA is better then CCNP. I always see like CCNA highly desired.

I am already scheduled for 503, so there is nothing I can do about that.
But I ask myself this question. What is the difference between me going
to a testing center, paying 125$ for each of these exams vs. me going in
my bedroom, sitting down with a Boston or transcender to test my
knowledge. I think I might do just that. Besides, everyone says it is
more important to know the material, and then have some paper. I am not
knocking the CCNP, it's a great program. But right now I can afford
these ongoing cost, and the ongoing cost are not exactly justified. I
thought the exams for the CCNP did test my knowledge of the subject
fairly. My plan for right now is to learn all the material I would need
to be a CCNP, but not take the rest of the exams. If an employer request
I have my CCNP, Ill just say gimme $500 and Ill go do that.

should anyone be surprised that Cisco too is becoming victim to the
certification craze?

1) cert tests for everything under the sun

2) reduction of the CCIE Lab from two days to one

3) obsolete and EOL'd equipment in the Lab

4) lower level tests that have too many filler questions centered around
marketing materials

5) poorly worded questions? sometimes I wonder if this is just the
excuse of
those who don't really know the materials, but since I know your work,
Robert, in your case I will accept your judgement on this

It would be impossible for Cisco to test for everything out there - old
and
new. The question becomes this: is any certification forward looking or
backwards looking? Face it, the whole reason for certification is for
companies to go to the marketplace and show potential buyers that if
they
buy a particular company's products, there are plenty of people around
who
can work on it. This goes for any technology - from Microsoft to Linux
to
Cisco to anyone. Certification is nothing more than a marketing tool,
and
one more means to help companies sell. If certification is too easy,
then
sure, there is some marketplace backlash, but if certification is too
hard,
requires too much expertise, too much experience, then that has negative
effects as well.

One would hope that being a beta test, Cisco would throw out a lot of
the
bad

The statement that provoked my question is from RFC 1721. They say

Subnet masks are also necessary for implementation of classless
addressing, as the CIDR work proposes

thus the question if a routing protocol supports subnet mask does that
automatically mean that it can do CIDR?

( I think the answer is no because CIDR means that you could have masks
stilling bits from the newtork ID and the router may not like this I
also think that historically subnetting and Variable Length subnet masking
came before CIDR. But those are just speculations. I don't have examples /
references to support my arguments and I would like to know if I am correct.)

RE: VLSM and CIDR [7:37031]

2002-03-01 Thread Pierre-Alex Guanel

Chuck, to my knowledge the command ip summary-address is used to
summarize IP address pools for dial-up clients,

not for actually summarizing subnets. Also, Cisco CCNA Certification Guide
(ISBN 0-7357-0971-8), page 393 says: EIGRP and

OSPF are the only interior IP routing protocols to support route
aggregation. So I am prone to conclude that the ability

to do VLSM does not automatically means that you can do CIDR .

My two cents ...

kinda in answer to your private message:

http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/software/ios121/121cgcr/ip_c
/ipcprt2/1cdrip.htm
watch the wrap

according to this, Cisco's implementation of Ripv2 does indeed support CIDR

On the other hand, getting this to work appears to be problematic. A check
of Doyle shows no CIDR example for Ripv2 A look though Large Scale IP
Network Solutions yields this interesting sentence: RIPV2 is able to
support classless interdomain routes. It can propagate a classless route
through redistribution

I can't get a damn CIDR route to show up in the RIPv2 table no matter how
many hokey pokies I do.

At this point I'm going to assume you have tried RipV2 and have had the same
frustration I just had - seeing no CIDR routes. This calls for a bit more
research.

I showed you in my private reply the result of the EIGRP test I set up.
The
 answer was no problem

I also know from long lab rat experience that it is not a problem with
OSPF.

I have not tried with either IS-IS or Ripv2, but again, why not?

there may be issues with older IOS code. Some vendor older models may not
support it. But I have no reason based on my experience, to believe that
it
is an issue with current IOS code.

you apparently do have to redistribute the CIDR routes into RIPv2. Silly me.

Network Solutions yields this interesting sentence: RIPV2 is able to
support classless interdomain routes. It can propagate a classless route
 through redistribution

I can't get a damn CIDR route to show up in the RIPv2 table no matter how
 many hokey pokies I do.

At this point I'm going to assume you have tried RipV2 and have had the
same
frustration I just had - seeing no CIDR routes. This calls for a bit more
 research.

I think you're trying to outsmart yourself. Can't be done!!! ;-

Some vendor older models may
not
support it. But I have no reason based on my experience, to believe that
 it
is an issue with current IOS code.

The statement that provoked my question is from RFC 1721. They say

Subnet masks are also necessary for implementation of classless
addressing, as the CIDR work proposes

thus the question if a routing protocol supports subnet mask does
that
automatically mean that it can do CIDR?

( I think the answer is no because CIDR means that you could have
masks
stilling bits from the newtork ID and the router may not like this

 I
also think that historically subnetting and Variable Length subnet
 masking
came before CIDR. But those are just speculations. I don't have
examples
 /
references to support my arguments and I would like to know if I am
  correct.)

   Thanks,

Priscilla,

In the attachment (Cisco CCNA Exam Guide #640-507 Certification Guide: ISBN
0-7357-0971-8), page 167 - 168, the authors seem to indicate that CBPDUs are
sent from blocked ports! The ability for CBPDUs to be sent out of blocked
port seems to a determinant factor for the Spanning Tree to be recomputed
after a topology change

Here is a word by word copy of the passage. The part I have problem about is
the one with (!!)

Thanks!

Pierre-Alex

--(e0)Bridge-1 (e1)-- (e0)Bridge 5(e1)---(e1) Bridge 4 (e0)---(e1)Bridge 3
(e0)---(e1)Bridge 2 (e0)--- (To bridge 1 e0)

Cost advertised by B2 is 100
Cost advertised by B3 is 200
Cost advertised by B5 is 10
Blocked port: Bridge 3, port e1

Bridge 5's E1 port fails...Only Bridge 4's MaxAge expires. The other bridges
are still receiving CBPDUs on their root ports. After MaxAge expires, Bridge
4 will decide the following:

Step 1 My E1 port is no longer my root port
Step 2 The same root bridge is being advertised in a CBPDU on my E0 port
(!)
Step 3 No other CBPDUs are being received
Step 4 My best path (and the only path, in this case) to the root is out of
my E0 port; therefore, my root port is now E0.)
Step 5 Because no other CBPDUs are entering my E1 port, I must be the
designated bridge on that segment. So, I will start sending CBPDUs on E1,
addming my E0 port cost (10) to the cost of the CBPDU received in the CBPDU
entering E0 (200) for a total of 210 (!!)

Kind Regards,

Pierre-Alex

So a blocked port can receive AND send BPDUs Correct?

When you have an opportunity to read Clark and Hamilton the explanation will
fit. A blocked port is not physically cut. Data traffic is blocked while
BPDUs are allowed. Else, how would it know that a change in topology has
taken place?
Step 2. Yes, all along bridge 4 has been receiving CBPDUs on both ports.
Since e1 had the lower root path cost, it became the root port. There is no
need to forward the CBPDUs it receives on e0 out e1 because it has already
determined that a lower cost path exists out e1. Once the e1 link fails
bridge 4 already knows that it has another path to the root bridge via
bridge 3.
Step 5. Logically follows. It takes the CBPDUs that it has always been
recieving on e0 and now forwards it out e1. It has no clue why it no longer
receives CBPDUs on e1.
Now think about what happens when bridge 5 e1 becomes functional again.
