BGP load balancing questions [7:61095]
Hello groupstudy, I've been banging my head against the wall and figured I would defer this question to those of you more learned and experienced. Here is the the scenario: 2 routers running BGP Router 1 has a connection to ISP 1 and router 2 has a connection to ISP 2 Each receives full routes. Each provider has given us a class C address Only the class C from provider 1 is actively used, because provider 2 will probably be dropped eventually(ssshhh don't tell ARIN) The class C is advertised to both ISPs, however ISP 1 aggregates this address space so instead of being 1.1.1.x /24 it's 1.1.x.x /16 This was checked using various looking glasses. What that means is that traffic to my Class C will arrive primarily via ISP 2 because it will see the /24 I advertise though it. That is bad, for various reasons. Mainly because we are charged by usage from ISP2, but also because we are going to upgrade ISP1 to a fractional t3 and use ISP 2 primarily as a backup eventually. Also the traffic coming in is 90% via ISP 2 and 10% via ISP 1. If I remember from my studying so long ago, even prepending my AS number to ISP 2 will not work, becuase it doesn't even make it to that criteria, but rather see the /24 and chooses that route. I searched some newsgroups, but amazingly enough nobody seemed to have this issue. I saw someone who had a larger block than /24 and some suggestions there but that would not work in this case. Options not available: Using the Class C from Carrier 2 to load balance using IP space and traffic types Getting a class C independant of a provider from ARIN. (That costs money :)) Robert Message Posted at: http://www.groupstudy.com/form/read.php?f=7i=61095t=61095 -- FAQ, list archives, and subscription info: http://www.groupstudy.com/list/cisco.html Report misconduct and Nondisclosure violations to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

RE: Cisco routers and MRTG [7:56794]
MRTG reports in bytes not bits 1250 * 8 = 1 12500 * 8 = 10 I've found MRTG to be extremely accurate. We've just started using Solarwinds in addition to MRTG. It looks a lot nicer and is easier to use and isn't really all that expensive. IP subnet Tool - Slightly off topic [7:52999]
Good morning, I've been using an excel spreadsheet to track about 100+ sites on our network as far as subnetting etc. But we are going to be moving to a standardized subnetting scheme and I was wondering if anyone had an access database tool or other program that they would recommend for ip subnet tracking so you don't use duplicates ranges when adding a site etc. Does anyone know of a tool that will handle this? RE: Can anyone break this Cisco 4912G password? [7:40505]
Boson has some free utilities that include a password breaker. IT won't work if you have the high level encryption enabled. Someone posted some equipment for sale once on e-bay. They gave a limited logon, and did a show config. I cracked the password utility with the boson cracker and when it prompted for a password for higher level stuff I entered it and it worked. I didn't do anything to the machine of course, and I did let the seller know. But most people are aware of it. Also another common password I found is the company name. RE: please help **location migration** [7:40162]
I'm not sure if this will help but here goes: I used to work for a dotcom and we had to move our Datacenter from SiteA to SiteB with 2 different address blocks. The problem you might say is if you move the website what happens? Well we made a duplicate copy of the website (minus the database) at site B and then used IIS forwarding to point to the new site and put the Database under maintenance until we got it transferred to Site B. Then we changed our DNS entries for the website and left the IIS forwarding on for a few days. I now this doesn't actually answer your question but it could solve your problem. -Original Message- From: Kevin Campbell [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Tuesday, April 02, 2002 5:49 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: please help **location migration** [7:40162] I work for a collocation and bandwidth provider and need help with an issue for a migration. I wish I got paid for doing work for them. However even if I had the knowledge to write one of the papers they don't have, I would probably lack the technical writing skills. However if they want to start paying me I'd probably be a less obvious in my praise. I would agree that anything on their site is obtainable for free from anywhere else. However reading the papers I find that they written in an easy to understand form, so you spend less time having to reread information and can spend more time thinking about it. Page 314 Remote Access Book. - For HDLC links, STAC is the only available choice. Page 316 - For FRame RElay deployments, use the frame-relay payload-compress command to enable STAC compression on an interface or a subinterface. RE: CCNP exams [7:38097]
Brian, It's a 3 year timer, not a two year timer for recertification. I got the certification to compliment my experience, not to say that I know what I'm doing because I have the CCNP certification. Those people that get it and are entry level will be weeded out by hiring managers. Those that have experience AND the certification can stand on their own from a hiring managers standpoint. Even the certification and experience do not make that person an expert. The CCNP exams CAN be passed by less than par individuals. That said, that is why there is a high-level certification. The CCIE, which when combined with real experience (pretty much required to pass), proves you are the cream of the crop. CCNA shows you want more and have started to learn the basics of routing. CCNP shows you have at least a basic knowledge of how things work. I don't think it shows that you can implement it. You need to have the experience to back up the certification to show you can implement it. The CCIE can pretty much be taken at face value, because almost anyone who has the certification has the experience anyway, but in order to pass the lab you have to prove something more. All the other certs simply pull you apart from other candidates if you have a reasonable amount of real-world experience. Passed Final Exam for CCNP ( Support ) [7:38018]
Hello, I figured I'd let everyone know I've passed my final exam for my CCNP. Below are answers to FAQ. Please note they are my personal opinions, not general consensus. 1. What order did you take the tests? CCNA (07/00) Switching (11/00) Routing (04/01) Remote Access (10/01) Support (03/02) 2. Why so long between the tests, did you fail any? I've never failed an exam in my life. I've taken 13 so far. I study for each one and make sure I'm prepared. Unfortunately due to work, other obligations and procrastination I didn't pass them sooner. It does make things more difficult in some ways, but since I work with Cisco equipment daily, it helps me keep fresh. 3. Which exams were the hardest? They are listed easiest to hardest. CCNA Switching Remote Access Support Routing Support was more difficult than it had to be, since I waited so long between tests and it has content based on knowing those other areas. 4. What books and study methods did you use? CCNA - Sybex Switching - CiscoPress Routing - CiscoPress Remote Access - CiscoPress and ExamCram Support - Sybex Everything was self-study and on the job experience. I also use brainbuzz.com for a final review before taking the test to make sure I didn't miss anything, overall I wasn't too impressed with their content though. Reading about how other people passed did help to give me confidence. Each person will find a different study method that works for them. I've never taken a training class for any of my certifications. 5. How many years of experience do you have? 8 Years of IT experience as follows: 3 Years, Routing and Switching firewalls etc 3 Years, Servers RAS etc 2 Years, Desktop Support, Computer builds, Retail computer sales 6. What's next? Tough decision, I need to upgrade my MCSE (UGGG) since I still have to use those skills. However I think the CCIE is of much more benefit to me. I have to make sure I'm committed and really study for the CCIE. My work is going to have training for the W2K stuff for our entire group so I've got to learn it one way or the other. I'm going to try and get some training such as a CCIE bootcamp. If anyone knows of a good bootcamp let me know. I'm leaning toward pursuing my CCIE, but it'll be a tough road. I don't believe in quitting, so if I start down that road I know I won't quit, but the high probability of Lab failure frightens me. I hate to fail anything. 7. Did you get a raise etc? Nope, as a matter of fact no one in our department is getting a raise at all this year. I guess some of us are just happy to have a job. We were told we should get year-end bonuses this year, something we didn't get last year. 8. Who paid for the training etc? The last few tests my employer has paid for, but the books I've paid for simply so that they belong to me and I can keep them for reference. I hope that helps anyone out there studying. Keep at it. The tests themselves weren't as hard as I would have hoped. Passing on them is about 700 on a scale of 300 to 1000. That's pretty low, but at the same time the quality of the questions was inferior to other exams. If you have a good reading comprehension level you can probably gain 100 points off just that. Aux port - Dialer setup question [7:21088]
While studying for my BCRAN test, I decided to test some of what I learned however I think I may have hit a bump. I think the problem is you can't put an aux port into a dialer pool because it doesn't have a physical interface. However for the purpose of this exercise I let you in on what I have attempted. I have 2 routers, I have a modem connected to each aux port. The 2 routers have a link between them, if that link goes down I want 1 router to call the 2nd and establish a connection using the aux ports. Do I have to have an asynch port in order to accomplish this? RE: Legacy DDR won't keep quiet [7:20854]
I'm taking a stab in the dark, but I think CDP sends traffic about every 90 seconds... Do a SHOW CDP Interface and see how often it is sending packets. If that is the case turn CDP off. Studying for the BCRAN, I have a lab with two 1602R's with BRI modules. I am simulating a FR connection with BRI configured for backup in legacy dialer-string mode. The backup works fine; ie. I pull the FR cable and the backup comes up, I send interesting traffic and the BRI dials and routes the packet. Problem is, even when there is no interesting traffic (even when I put an access list on it with 'deny any') the BRI still dials periodically. As far as I can tell it's about 90 seconds between. labelled #[other number] Bell: Please describe for me why you think it is down. Avi: Because it is dead. it is down. it is not functioning Bell: No, no, it's uh, it's resting Avi: Look matey, I know a dead T1 when I see it, and I'm looking at one right now. Bell: No no it's not dead, it's, it's restin'! Remarkable line, the T1, idn'it, ay? Beautiful bits! Avi: The bits don't enter into it. It's stone dead. Bell: Nonononono, no, no. It's resting. Avi: All right then, if it's resting, I'll wake it up.[Yells into wall socket] ELLO, MISTER TELLY T1! Bell: See- it's working! Avi: No it isn't- that was you. Bell: I never! Avi: Yes, you did! Bell: I never did anything. Avi: [Pulls wire out of socket and beats it against the side of the server.] 'Ello Mister T1 TESTING TESTING TESTING! This is your 9 o'clock cron job download! [Watches bits physically falling on floor] Now that's what I call a dead T1! Bell: No, no, you stunned it. Avi: STUNNED!? Bell: Yeah- you stunned it just as it was starting to accept packets. T1s stun easily, major. Avi: Um, now look mate. I've had enough of this. This T1 is definitely deceased, and when we hooked it up not more than a day ago, you assured me that its total inability to transmit was due to it being tired and shagged out after trying to pull across all of alt.binaries.pictures.erotica.really.really.nasty last night. Bell: Well, it's , ah, it's just pining for the ARPANET. Avi: PINING FOR THE ARPANET?!? What kind of talk is that? Look, why did it drop every packet as soon as we plugged it into this Sparc? Bell: The T1 prefers to drop packets from a Sparc. Remarkable line, isn't it. Lovely bits. Avi: Look, I took the liberty of dissassembling the smartjack last night, and found that the only reason that it looked like it was working it because you'd wired the lights to a battery. Bell: Well, of course. If we hadn't, it might have burned the whole smartjack out-VOOM VOOM! Avi: VOOM? Mate, this line wouldn't voom if you put four million volts through it. It's bleeding demised! Bell: No, no, it's pining. Avi: It's not pining, it's passed on! This line is not working! It has ceased to transmit! Bereft of data, it lies in peace. If you hadn't wired the lights it would have been recycled. It carries 0MB/sec! It's no longer functional- it's shuffled off the backbone and gone to meet its maker. THIS IS AN EX-T1! Bell: Well, we better fix it then. 'Fraid we're all out of working T1s. Avi: I see, I see. I get the picture Bell: I've got an AOL disk and a 2400 baud modem. Avi: Pray, does it work? Bell: Nnnnot really... Thank You, Robert Fowler Network Administrator MasTec, Inc. How do I get on the security announcement list? Is there a form on Cisco's site? -Original Message- From: Allen May [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Friday, May 25, 2001 11:07 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: For those using 12.1(2)T or 12.1(3)T [7:5904] Security scanning vulnerability that causes router reload. http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/707/ios-tcp-scanner-reload-pub.shtml Just an FYI for those not on the security announcement lists. DDR into a PRI [7:1701]
Ok here is my question, Say you setup DDR with analog lines back to a central location with PRI, would you need to have the MICA modems or is there a command that will let the PRI interface card use the lines from the t1-PRI? I've search the CCO and I've found a lot of information on DDR but nothing on the specifics for coming back into a central PRI. RE: DDR into a PRI [7:1701]
We have several remote sites that need to dial-in if there frame relay connection fails, I figured I would set them up with modems hooked to the aux port as a backup interface. My questions revolves around the central site with the PRI. I've been told my another NA that I work with that there is a command that you can enter that will allow you to use the dial-in lines directly on the router without using MICA modems. I thought a modem had to talk to another modem. Hope this helps. What kind of setup did you do and did it work successfully? -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Tuesday, April 24, 2001 9:49 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]; [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: RE: DDR into a PRI [7:1701] I'm confused give me more information!
