Re: x.25 stock exchange system.

2001-01-05 Thread Sam LI

Well
to enable the x25 on your router, you need

int s 0
  encap x25

if the stock exchange provide ip address, then
int s 0
  encap x25
  ip address A.B.C.E 255.

and forward it to ethernet interface
int e 0
  ip address X.Y.Z.Z

then you can enable any routing protocol that you want
like RIP,

router Rip
  network A.B...
  network X.Y

 Hello colleagues,

I have heard that after changing the ISDN switch type (both global and

effect. Do you know if that is true ?
Thanks for your help in advance.

Re: ccie lab

2001-01-04 Thread Sam LI

Folks
I agree that no one is willing want to put ccie 102400 on their name card.
Let me tell you how do the management level look at ccie, at the very
begining when
cisco launch ccie, every one is very very crazy about ccie, engineers and
vendor,
as far as engineer concern, they can ask more, for sure. The companywise,
the more ccie
we get, the more discount we get. What happen nowaday, if you are ccie,
that's great,
if you are not, it is fine with us. We need someone who is able to perform
and work,
not BS. A lot of my friends on passing thier ccie, they don;t want to work
as engineer any more,
or even don;t want to work in the cisco enviroment, and they want more, $
and position.
"manager" is the entry level for them. Right before, i leave
my previous company, I have interview a lot of ccXXs. Most of them don't
desire the CCxx title.
This is not hard to understand this, hunderds and thousands of "21 days
became ccxx" books
study materials out there, as long as you can affort few weeks off and a
couple of thouand $ on
buying these books, you can be one of them.
It is a chellenge if you became one of the CCxx.

I don't see a problem with the lab being so booked.
So many people taking the exam and the number of ccie's being so low. Is a
good thing. If someone qualifies and feels they are ready let them go. You
should schedule your lab at the next available time and go take it. If you
fail then tell me how long would you want to wait. Myself I will schedule
the next available time and take it again until I pass. Most great battles
have been won by attrition, since Moses to CCIE.
 Duck

I certainly agree with all the points Chuck made. One thing that Cisco
could
 do is
change the requirements to take the lab besides just passing the written
 exam. I am not
saying by any account that the written is easy, but I know people that
have
 passed it by
pure luck and really don't know a darn thing. I know a person right now
that
 has passed
the written by getting the passing score on the dime, and he is taking the
 lab soon. I
wish good luck to him, however he is walking in blindly with out EVER
 actually
configured a router. He has no internetworking design or troubleshooting
 experience in
the real world, however he is going to go and take the lab exam just to
"see
 what it is
 like"

I don't think Chuck's ideas are cruel and unusual. I think they really
need
 to make this
tougher then it already is. Who wants to put "CCIE #102,000" after their
 name? If they
just open more racks it may get to that point. I believe the written exam
 should be
scratched with a new format with a higher passing score. Truly the money
 issue sometimes
makes little difference. If someone has 30,000 grand to spend on
equipment,
 classes,
books etc., a few more grand can't hurt. And if their company is paying
then
 who cares
right? I know a company that has spent countless dollars actually flying
a
 guy to
Canada, putting him up in a hotel...and paying for his labthey did
this
 5 times
before he passed his lab. Those slots could have been used for someone
that
 actually
knew what they were doing and had a chance to pass. It would be nice if
 they had a 4
hour lab prequal after taking the written. Something that would not
require
 a proctor to
pass. You would be given many different scenarios at Sylvan and require to
 configure
them with a virtual IOS. The configs would be sent to an evaluator at
Cisco
 and then you
would be contacted a week later concerning scheduling your real lab date.
 This could
weed out some of the flunkies.

If Cisco ruins the value of this exam, they are not going to have any
future
 revenue
 from it.

I redistribute IGPs into BGP and set the redistributed route's metric to
certain value. If I use "redistribute xxx metric yyy " command, metric
value
is set correctly for ospf and static but doesn;t work for RIP, IGRP, and
EIGRP (no matter the yyy value, metric value always 0 in show ip bgp).
Using
route-map, the metric is set correctly for all protocols.
Anybody knows the reason why ?

In any circumstance, whatever device who generate traffic to any target,

Re: IP Classless

2000-10-30 Thread Sam LI

let's assume that we have network 10.0.0.0 and its subnet 10.1.0.0/16
10.2.0.0, 10.3.0.0 ... and a default route
ip route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 serial 0

 10.0.0.0
 10.1.0.0
 10.2.0.0
 10.3.0.0
S 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 (Serial 0)

when a packet reach the router and ask for the destination 10.1.1.1 (for
example) it will match
one of the above rule 10.1.0.0.
now when another packet reach this router and ask for 10.4.0.1 (for example)
now, since there
is no rules under the 10.0.0.0 network, it will drop even there is a static
route.
This is the no IP classless

for the ip classless, the packet ask for 10.4.0.1, it doesn;t match the
anyrule inside network 10.0.0.0
and DO NOT DROP the packet but seek the best alternative out, in this case
is Serial 0

While configuring and OSPF demand circuit over ISDN, I noticed that the
ISDN
link would disconnected and immediately reconnect - because the change in
ospf topology was triggering and LSA flood - forcing the ISDN line to
reconnect. However, the dialer enable-timeout setting was at it's default
of 15 seconds so the ISDN link should have been forced to wait 15 seconds
before attempting to reconnect (and thereby giving the LSA flood time to
pass). However, this did not happen. No matter what I set the dialer
enable-timeout to, the redial happened immediately.

Question: What am I missing? (or mis-understanding)

 Thanks in advance!

 Hi all,

 I need your input here.
I have 4 remote sites that are connected to HQ via FR as the primary WAN
 connection.
I need to have ISDN DDR for all remote sites to HQ in case a FR circuit
goes
 down ...
On the BRI interface at HQ ... I only need 1 ip address right?
Can I get the HQ router to assign dynamic ip addresses to the remote
site's
 bri interfaces ...

I would appreciate it if you could point me to references on CCO regarding
 this scenario ...

 Thanks much,

 Greetings All

I have a 2511 with 4 MB of flash in it. I need to upgrade the IOS needs
 7MB. I tried canabalizing another 2511 I had and adding it's 4MB to the
1st
routers 4MB making what I believed to be 8MB. But when I tried to tftp the
new image over I still got an error saying not enough memory, and yes I
had
opted to erase the flash first. When I went and looked at the flash the
router saw it as two 4MB cards instead of 1 8MB.

What do I need to do to get the flash blended together to act as 1 8MB?

Subject: Frame Relay Map Help

I am working through Caslow's Bridges Router and Switches book and I am
trying to get a firm understanding of frame-relay.

I have generally recreated the lab on page 126 with the minor changes of
adding another router and changing addresses. For those without the book
(which is very good by the way) this is frame on physical interfaces in a
 hub and spoke configuration.

The hub can ping all spokes, and each spoke can ping the hub. However,
spokes can not ping each other until the 'frame-relay map ip" statement is
added to point to each spoke.

Everything can now ping everything else. Now we save the configs and
 reload.

Since map statements have not been added on the spokes to point to the hub
(since they were originally learned dynamically) I expect that dynamic
inverse arp to be disabled, and there will be no dynamic entries on the
spokes for the same protocol and the same dlci.

This is not the case in my lab here is the relevant part of the config
on one spoke, and the results of 'show frame-relay map'

 interface Serial1
  ip address 192.168.14.2 255.255.255.0
  encapsulation frame-relay
  frame-relay map ip 192.168.14.3 201
  frame-relay map ip 192.168.14.4 201
  no frame-relay inverse-arp

 Router2#sho frame-relay map
 Serial1 (up): ip 192.168.14.1 dlci 201(0xC9,0x3090), dynamic,
   broadcast,, status defined, active
 Serial1 (up): ip 192.168.14.3 dlci 201(0xC9,0x3090), static,
   CISCO, status defined, active
 Serial1 (up): ip 192.168.14.4 dlci 201(0xC9,0x3090), static,
   CISCO, status defined, active

Can someone explain why this is happening? (also explain how disabling
frame-realy inverse arp works since I get similar results).

 Thanks

I saw on Amazon that Jeff Doyle's book (which seems fairly popular here on

March 2001. This is just in case you have recently ordered it and have
the

Re: USB -- Console connector

2000-10-23 Thread Sam LI

You can get the usb to serial port in the electronic shop, they should have
a driver come with this cable too,
hence the answer is yes or no
it really depends on the emulation program that comewith the cable
some program can't generate the "control break" or "control c" key, well you
can talk to the router
but you can't use it to send "control key" to recover password

Subject: Fwd: Re: IPX

If you simply wish to filter out all updates *except* the Netware file
servers you can
use an output sap filter on the wan interface of *each* router. (I am
assuming that you
have IOS feature sets on your routers which support IPX.) For example:

 Router A

 ipx routing

 access-list 1001 permit -1 4
access-list 1001 deny -1 -- not necessary due to implicit deny
but I prefer to
have it in there for readability

 interface s 0
  ipx network AC
  ipx output-sap-filter 1001

 interface e 0
  ipx network A

 -

After you implement the output sap filter, wait 60 seconds and do a show
ipx servers.
The non-server entries for the remote sites should go away. Check out the
link below for
 more information.

 http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/701/34.html

As for implementing IPX EIGRP, this would depend on the speed of your WAN
links and the
amount of required (i.e. servers) SAP traffic. Using IPX/RIP, it takes 480
bytes every
60 seconds to advertise 7 SAP services. If you have fast links and a
small amount of
required SAP traffic then implementing IPX EIGRP might be unnecessary. If
on the other
hand you have lots of required SAP traffic I would definitely implement
IPX EIGRP. If
you do setup it up, don't forget to disable IPX/RIP for the WAN
interfaces. For example:

 Router A
 ---
 ipx routing

 int e 0
 ipx network A

 int s 0
 ipx network AC

 ipx router eigrp 100
  network AC
  network A

 ipx router rip
  no network AC

 --

 Hope this helps,
 Sandy Turnage

 SH Wesson wrote:

In regards to ipx routing, how and when do we determine if running ipx
routing is enough as compare to when to run ipx eigrp routing? My
environment is growing from about 100 sap listings to maybe 2000 sap
  listings via a company merger.

My second question is via the following diagram

  Site A Site B Site C

Currently, IP traffic is going between Site A, B, and C. IPX is running
locally within each site but not routed to other sites. I wanted to
have
Site A and Site C to be able to talk IPX in order to see Novell servers
on
each site by enabling IPX routing. Site A has about 100 sap listings,
Site
B has about 2000 sap listings, and site C has about 750 sap listings.
In
enabling ipx routing across from A to C, how can I go about such that
Site A
only certain server sap advertisements from Site C. Basically, I only
want
to be able to see servers across A and C and don't need to see ipx
enabled
clients. Also, in this type of environment with the above number os sap
listings, should I just use ipx routing or should I use "ipx eigrp"?

  Thanks.

i am simulating an isdn call on an isdn switch with 2 S0 interfaces.
i am trying to configure DDR . as i am trying to ping the remote
router ( 192.168.0.1 ) the call gets initiated but gets disconnected
immediately.
i included the output of the isdn q931 command and my running config.

Can anyone summarize the differences between Cisco and CiscoPro product
line (2500 series) (besides one being blueish green and the other
being white). Is their a procedure that has to be done so that a
 CiscoPro can run any IOS?

 Thanks,

 Brian

I need to do a lab with DLSw and also IPX, Appletalk (but not ISDN)

How do I know which IOS version to use? IS there a quick way to check
it? Or I have to download every single IOS image and check it?

 Thanks
