full duplex and port speed not configuring

2001-02-19 Thread Gayathri

Hi Group,

We recently moved one our Management Station - UniX box ( its a Netview
box) from 4th to 5th floor. I have connected it to a CAT55 switch.

When it was coonected to a Cat55 switch previously , it was operating in
full duplex 100mbps. But when i moved it yesterday to another switch port
also a CAT 55, the port just doesnt reconfigure to full duplex , 100 Mbps. I
manually tried to configure at the switch port. When i try to do it, the
port gets disconnected.

I have maintained the same vlan, just that its now connected to a different
cat55 in another floor.

Any thoughts why this happens? I cant get the port up and down, because this
is a management station and , once it is up it will send 1000's of pages. So
i have to make sure what i do is right.

Strange thing is htat, I moved to more unix boxes, and they dont seem to
have this proble,\m.

I am sure that the unix bozx is configured for full duplex, since it was
previosuly operating in full duplex mode.

Thanks in advance for any inputs

Regards

Thanks for all the varying thoughts,

It is good to hear first hand information from like minded people than to
visit some recruiters/head hunters web sites and make wild guess.

It looks like CCIE is the ultimate. These middle level certificates only

DHCP

2001-02-22 Thread Gayathri

Hi Group,

I have 2 DHCP servers and I have defined both the IP helper addressess in
our routers

Now, if a client quieries for an IP, which of the servers will respond
first?

The problem I have is we have defined one subnet in DHCP Server and not in
the other.

When this user is querying for an IP , he is not getting a response.

interface Ethernet0
 ip address 10.X.X.X 255.255.0.0
 ip helper-address 10.X.1.X
 ip helper-address 10.X.1.Y

The said subnet is defined in the DHCP server 10.102.1.Y but, still there
is no response. when the client requests.

The main reason we have 2 DHCP servers is for redundancy.

Please note that they are independant of each other .

Does this mean that , when the client is requesting, the router first
forwards to the first DHCP server and since it is not getting a response ,
is dropping it?

Thanks

While I do agree that you need to do a bit of research before coming to psot

Infact we can learn from each others problems. For people who dont want to

switch capacity - backplane

2001-03-09 Thread Gayathri

The catalyst 6000 series supports upto 130 Gb ports. And the backplane
capacity is 32 gbps.

So if i use all the 130 gigabit ports , does it mean that i am
overutilizing.

I cant relate the sizing of the ports to the switch backplane capacity.

Thanks in advance for any clarifications recvd.

outlook for future?

2001-03-12 Thread Gayathri

Hi Group.

Is the situation really that bad as we are hearing ? If so , then I guess we
need to rethink of these certs. For people who are in the process /mid-way
to acheive these certs its disheartening to know that they are not of the
same value anymore.

I heard that a lot of CCNP guys are on bench. Is this true?

How long do u think that this trend will continue? Personally, I feel this
is more of a clean up process and things will fall in place in due course.

network response time

2001-03-16 Thread Gayathri

Hi ,

I am trying to monitor network utilization on LAN for a particular
application.

The server is connected to a CAT55 switch . The intention here is to see the
response time from the time the users starts using the application, till the
server replies.

When I contacted my vendor, they said I have to use a software called end
point. But he also mentioned this can go upto the network layer only.
Moreover, this utilization is for the whole vlan.

But the end result I want is , how much time the server has taken to reply
back to the client? What is the network response time and breakdown of the
time by server, network and application.

is there any way to acheive this result?

thanks and regards

yes , cisco has an authorised training centre in India. Even for CCIE exams
you can take the lab exams in Bangalore.

Training institutes which offer this courses are MicroLand, Datacraft.

Please help - this is quiet urgent

2001-03-27 Thread Gayathri

Hello

I have a strange problem here. WE upgraded our AS400 system. The AS 400 is
equipped with a fddi card and a fast ethernet card both on 2 different
vlans.

When I try to connect from my NT server to the AS400 the session keeps
timing out. This problem occured only after the upgradation.

out of 34 branches ( this is a banking environment) only 3 servers can
connect.

When i try to sniff at the nt server, the output shows that there is a SYN
from the nt server and RST from AS400.

IBM guys are here, but we dont seem to get across a solution.

The NT server are running service pack 3.

Is this related to any session time out ??

If anybody has come across a similar problem please share your ideas. CAnt
seem to decide whether at all this is a network problem

Thanks

Router- As400 - connectivity

2001-03-29 Thread Gayathri

Hi Group

Just to share with you, a few days ago on the 27th I had asked ofr help
regarding the AS400.

Now it seems like presently the problem is solved.

The AS400 team increased the MTU on the AS400 box to 4096 and it seems to
work okay. This is very strange because the mtu defined on our router is
1500. I can texpalin the theory behind this but for now it jsut worked.
Earlier we used to get a DR watson error at the branch servers. the dr
watson error was something like this.

If anybody can interpret this

ping inconsistencies

2001-03-29 Thread Gayathri

Hi,

In our network, whenever i try to ping a ip address there is inconsistenet
replies, after every 10th ping it times out and replies again, this is very
inconsistent. But the network is okay when I ping anywhere else. I have
checked ofr the counters, errors on the access layer switch, core layer,
everything looks okay.

The network is liek this

user PC - access layer switch - distribution layer - core layer

This Ip address I try to ping is on the FDDI ring in the core layer, its an
AS400 Box

ANy ideas why htis could happen.

debug ip error

2001-04-02 Thread Gayathri

Hi Group,

Recently due to some problems my colleague issued a debug ip error command
on the rsm.

The problem is we could not stop the process at all. We tried using the no
debug ip error but it never came out of the process, there was a lot of
details regarding routing info . Luckily for us we had HSRP.

We had to reboot the RSM , manually i.e, remove the card and insert it back.
Is this a common thing that we cant stop the debug ip error process.

Thanks

and if you are in India its available for around 500rs.

With IPSec enabled on Win2k , server at both ends over the wan links just

Within the same subnet, and when windows 2kservers are in the same domain ,
i can ping them.

I found from cisco web site that , nothing need sot be enabled at the

handling the ipsec.

Any thoughts??

I found from cisco web site that , nothing need sot be enabled at the
router, and the router has to just forward the packets, since win2k is
handling the ipsec.

Any thoughts??

wan link utilization. [7:13735]

2001-07-25 Thread Gayathri

Hi Group,

Any thoughts pertaining to this ??

There are 2 locations connected via fast ethernet . Both locations have 7507
routers.

There is a need to replicate files among these two locations . But it seems
that the transfer is very slow.

So In order to speed up the transfer, our AS400 system administrator has
tried to change the buffer size in the AS400.

at default 8K the transfer is slow, at 1M the transfer is the fastest, and
at maximum 8M the transfer is quite slow. During
all these changes, the Dark-Fiber FE utilization remained below 25%.

Would like to know how to maximum the AS400 usage for the FE link without
affecting other traffics that also need
to flow from these two locations.

Why does the transfer slow down when the AS400 buffer size was set to
maximum 8M. I thought the router would just send whatever as long the link
is
not "fully" utilised. Are there any parameters/settings apart from
priority list/queuing that we could configure at the router to help to
expedite
the transfer.

Thanks...

Hi Gayathri,

You'll need to configure TRANSLATIONAL bridging between your Token
Ring and Ethernet interfaces.

This following link may help you in understanding the underlying
technology:
http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/cisintwk/ito_doc/mmbridge.htm

Here's a URL from Cisco's web site that will assist you in the
configuration commands:
http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/software/ios120/12cgcr/i
bm_c
/bcprt1/bcsrb.htm#xtocid409317

Finally, this link gives a good example of the actual configuration and
how to troubleshoot:

load balance on ospf [7:27761]

2001-11-29 Thread Gayathri

Hi Group,

Is it possible to load balance between a 2Mb link and 1Mb link on a cisco
router running OSPF, since they are not equal bandwidth?
Appreciate if anyone can enlighten how we can acheive this? A quick search
on cisoc site did not furnish much details for me. Apart from tuning the
cost is there a good way of doing this?

Thanks
