Cisco PIX, IPSEC and activation Key
Hi there, I've got a Pix 506 to play with and wanted to configure some IPSEC-Settings... The PIX told me that it needs an activation key... I ordered the key through the web-form and when I received it I wanted to activate it... As the Pix was already in use without activation key I was not prompted for a new key anymore. In the Cisco-documentation i read that there is no command to change the activation key and that I have to install a new Software to the Pix to activate the key... I tried to download new software but I was not allowed to - so could someone please tell me how to change the activation key without having another software-package? best regards Dietmar Prantner ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) _ FAQ, list archives, and subscription info: http://www.groupstudy.com/list/cisco.html Report misconduct and Nondisclosure violations to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

RE: PIX activation key [7:34450]
Well, I've seen an "R" version and a "U" version but never a "UR" version. I have always been under the assumption that they were mutually exclusive. As for the lack of an activation key, that is odd. What is the current version of the OS? Have you tried to run an upgrade? When you apply for a feature license, such as the free 56-bit (DES) encryption feature, you will be given a new activation key generated via the serial number. I would apply for the 56-bit key and then do an upgrade to the latest code (6.1.1), which will prompt you for a new key if needed. Re: PIX activation key [7:34450]
If you're not changing the features, then you won't need to put a new activation key in. If you are changing the features then you will have a new activation key, so you don't need the existing one. I used to cut and paste the activation key all the time "just in case" but never used it. I seem to remember some images not showing the activation key in show ver. I don't think I ever found it. I just took what I thought was a risk at the time. The free DES image is a bit of a mystery to me at the moment. Used it a few times to allow PDM, but not sure why Cisco do it. Who knows - you could maybe even upgrade a Failover Pix using the DES image :-) Gaz ""Radford Dion"" wrote in message [EMAIL PROTECTED]">news:[EMAIL PROTECTED]... > I've just got a hold of a PIX 515UR and I want to upgrade to the lastest > software, but when I do a show ver there is no activation key. > > Is this normal, or do I have to obtain one from somewhere? > > Dion Radford > Mellon Site Services - Europe > 71 Queen Victoria Street, London, EC4V 4DR > +44 (0) 20 7653 2850 - Work > +44 (0) 20 7653 2227 - Fax > +44 (0) 794 092 8809 - Mobile > Email: [EMAIL PROTECTED] > > * > DISCLAIMER: The information contained in this e-mail may be confidential > and is intended solely for the use of the named addressee. Re: PIX activation key [7:34450]
Dion, On the PIX 515 that we have, the activation key is listed directly under the serial number of the "sh ver" (the very last line). Perhaps you are running really old PIX code??? In the past I have successfully obtained the correct serial number by applying for the IPSec upgrade license for the PIX. You need the PIX serial number, but not the activation key. They will e-mail you a new activation key that works for the desired software version and will also have IPSec enabled (not 3DES though). - Tom In article , "Radford Dion" wrote: > I've just got a hold of a PIX 515UR and I want to upgrade to the lastest > software, but when I do a show ver there is no activation key. > > Is this normal, or do I have to obtain one from somewhere? > > Dion Radford > Mellon Site Services - Europe > 71 Queen Victoria Street, London, EC4V 4DR +44 (0) 20 7653 2850 - Work > +44 (0) 20 7653 2227 - Fax > +44 (0) 794 092 8809 - Mobile > Email: [EMAIL PROTECTED] > > * > DISCLAIMER: The information contained in this e-mail may be > confidential and is intended solely for the use of the named addressee. > Access, copying or re-use of the e-mail or any information contained > therein by any other person is not authorized. PIX and the Activation Key [7:59574]
Greetings, I have been given the opportunity to install/configure a new 506E pix firewall which our client had purchased from another supplier. Configuring it to provide basic connectivity seemed somewhat linear (I will not be using any IPsec features ;) ), the client had also purchased a 168 bit licence key. Ok, my question is, what am I supposed to do with this serial number provided on a (official-looking) document that accompanied the pix? I thought the pix would prompt me for an activation key after booting the flash, as explained in this url, http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/vpndevc/ps2030/products_installation_g uide_chapter09186a0080089812.html#xtocid38 ? however, it booted up normally into the default prompt ( pixfirewall> ). RE: PIX and the Activation Key [7:59574]
Depending on the version of PIX code the unit is running, you might not have to do too much. First, go to your PIX, and issue the 'Show Version' command. If you are running 6.1 or higher (I believe), you can go into config mode and issue the 'activation-key' command followed by the 4 sets of alpha-numeric characters. This will "install" the 3DES license on the PIX. The alpha-numerics you enter are not derived from the "official-looking document". Rather, you are supposed to go onto the CCO site, and under the PIX registration page, you will have a link for requesting your PIX Activation Code. You submit the Serial Number of the PIX (found on the back or bottom of the unit) and the alpha-numerics found on the "document". In return, you'll receive an email with the activation code. That activation code is what you enter at the PIX console. Now, all the code acquisition process aside, if you are running an older version of PIX OS, then you have to tftp the PIX OS to a tftp or http server, and then pull it back from the tftp/http server while in ROMMON mode. This basically is like you're installing the PIX OS. At the end of the download process to the PIX, and right after you reboot it, you'll be prompted to enter new activation keys. This is where you enter the alpha-numerics acquired from Cisco via Email. RE: PIX and the Activation Key [7:59610]
If you chose the "Register for purchased Feature Upgrade..." (which is found on the link that follows) and was then prompted with the output listed below the link, then you were in the correct place. You have to register the 3DES license you purchased. To register the license, you have to provide the CCO Account information of the client who purchased the Firewall (Firewall has to be registered to the owner of the firewall, and thus the owner has to have their own CCO Account). The exception to this rule is if your company is providing managed services for the firewall, which includes you providing the firewall appliance yourself. www.cisco.com/cgi-bin/Support/browse/psp_view.pl?p=Hardware:PIX&s=Softwa re_Configuration "License Registration This page is for use when you have purchased and received a PIX Firewall Connection Count or Feature License Upgrade. New PIX owners do not need to use this page - only those users who have purchased a Connection Count or Feature License Upgrade." The part about New PIX owners is deceiving because it should indicate that the rule applies to new PIX owners that purchased the firewall as a 3DES bundle with the 3DES Licensing already installed. You still have to register the PIX to your company/client's company, which should automatically associate the 3DES licensing with your unit by Serial Number of the unit itself. If it doesn't, then you still have to register the 3DES License. If you still have to register, it's recommended that you contact customer service to assist with the registration. My bet is (from experience) that you will have to go through the registration page mentioned above, and then follow the installation procedure mentioned in my previous post for activating the 3DES license. Just a note- When you issue the Show Version command on the PIX, it should give you a list of features Enabled or Disabled. If you see Enabled following to the right of the 3DES entry, then you know for sure your 3des license has been installed. An example follows: Licensed Features: Failover: Disabled VPN-DES:Enabled VPN-3DES: Enabled*** Maximum Interfaces: 2 Cut-through Proxy: Enabled Guards: Enabled URL-filtering: Enabled Inside Hosts: 10 Throughput: Limited IKE peers: 5 This is from my PIX 501 with 3DES License installed. RE: PIX activation key on 4.1(6) [7:13187]
shtml Software Installation Notes This section provides information about installing software on a PIX Firewall. Note If you are upgrading from an earlier software version, save your configuration and write down your activation key. The following topics are discussed in this section: Boothelper Installation Downloading a Software Image over TFTP Using TFTP Commands TFTP Download Error Codes Upgrading the Activation Key Boothelper Installation Note The Boothelper installation only applies to PIX Firewall units with a diskette drive. Follow these steps to install the PIX Firewall software using the Boothelper: Step 1 Access CCO at http://www.cisco.com and log in. Then access the PIX Firewall software downloads at the following website: http://www.cisco.com/cgi-bin/tablebuild.pl/pix Step 2 Download the Boothelper image from CCO and the current PIX Firewall software image. If you are using Windows, also download the rawrite.exe program from CCO, and download a TFTP server from the following website: http://www.cisco.com/cgi-bin/tablebuild.pl/tftp The UNIX and LINUX operating systems contain a TFTP server. Step 3 To prepare a UNIX or LINUX TFTP server to provide an image to the PIX Firewall, edit the inetd.conf file to remove the # (comment character) from the start of the "tftp" statement. Then use the ps aux | grep inetd command string to determine the process ID of the current inetd process. Use the kill command to kill the process. The process will restart automatically. Continue with Step 5. Step 4 If you are using Windows, use the rawrite program to put the Boothelper image on diskette. A sample rawrite session follows: C:pix> rawrite RaWrite 1.2 - Write disk file to raw floppy diskette Enter source file name: bh601.bin Enter destination drive: a: Please insert a formatted diskette into drive A: and press -ENTER- : Number of sectors per track for this disk is 18 Writing image to drive A:. Press ^C to abort. Track: 78 Head: 1 Sector: 16 Done. C:pix> If you are using UNIX, use the dd command. For example, if the diskette device name is rd0, use the following command: dd bs=18b if=./bh601.bin of=/dev/rd0 Step 5 Get the TFTP server working on a host in your network and add the PIX Firewall binary image to a directory accessible by the server. Step 6 Connect a console to the PIX Firewall and ensure that it is ready. Step 7 Put the diskette containing the Boothelper in the PIX Firewall and reboot it. When the PIX Firewall starts, the pixboothelper> prompt appears. Step 8 You can now enter commands to download the binary image from the TFTP server: a. If needed, use a question mark (?) or enter the help command to list the available commands. b. Use the address command to specify the IP address of the PIX Firewall unit's interface on which the TFTP server resides. You can abbreviate this command as a. c. Use the server command to specify the IP address of the host running the TFTP server. You can abbreviate this command as s. d. Use the file command to specify the filename of the PIX Firewall image. You can abbreviate this command as f. In UNIX, the file needs to be world readable for the TFTP server to access it. e. If needed, use the gateway command to specify the IP address of a router gateway through which the server is accessible. f. If needed, use the ping command to verify accessibility. If this command fails, fix access to the server before continuing. Use the interface command to specify which interface the ping traffic should use. The Boothelper defaults to the interface 1. You can abbreviate the interface command as i. g. Use the tftp command to start the download. The following is an example session: Cisco Secure PIX Boothelper Version 6.0(1) pixboothelper> a 10.132.12.66 address:10.132.12.66 pixboothelper> s 10.129.0.2 server 10.129.0.2 pixboothelper> i 0 current interface is 0 0: i82557 @ PCI(bus:0 dev:13 irq:11)ethernet0 100basetx 1: i82557 @ PCI(bus:0 dev:14 irq:10)ethernet1 not_init 2: i82557 @ PCI(bus:0 dev:15 irq:15)ethernet2 not_init pixboothelper> f pix-6.0.1-release file pix-6.0.1-release pixboothelper> tftp tftp [EMAIL PROTECTED] ... Step 9 After the image downloads, you are prompted to install the new image. Enter y. Step 10 When you are prompted, enter your activation key. How to get the activation key for my clone Pix? [7:36531]
Hi Everyone, After struggling for the past two days, I have successfully cloned a Pix firewall by using my PC. I plug the 16MB flash card into the PC's ISA slot and the PC recognize that it is a Pix flash card (cost me $400.00). It boots up fine and everything seems to be in order. However, after the boot up sequence, it asks me for the activation key. I've been trying many different possible scenarios without much success. I even tried to use the activation key from another Pix firewall but that doesn't work either. Anybody know how I can fake my clone Pix with a fake activation key? By the way,I am running Pix OS code version 6.1(2). I even tried 5.3(1), 5.3(2), 6.0(1) and 6.1(1) and one of them works. By the way, the PC has 128MB of RAM and a 16Mb Flash ISA card. I tried to clone a Pix520. Please help. Jason __ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! Re: How to get the activation key for my clone Pix [7:36536]
The activation key is tied into the serial number of the PIX (I assume the serial # is somehow related to the flash card) so using the key from one PIX will not work in another. I had to RMA a PIX 515 a few months ago and needed to send Cisco the new serial number and they sent me the new activation key later that day. The 56-bit key is free, though, from CCO, but you still need your serial number. Not sure what you would do in your case though, to be honest... - Original Message - From: "Athony Jones" To: ; Sent: Tuesday, February 26, 2002 2:02 PM Subject: How to get the activation key for my clone Pix? > Hi Everyone, > After struggling for the past two days, I have > successfully cloned a Pix firewall by using my PC. > I plug the 16MB flash card into the PC's ISA slot > and the PC recognize that it is a Pix flash card > (cost me $400.00). You got a good price on the flash card However, this is not a wise move. Bad karma to do this installation anyway... Worse karma to ask for help on a public list with numerous Cisco people on it! (grin) Anyway, the activation key is tied to the serial number, which of course is on the flash card. Now you can get a 56-bit DES key for free, although I still wouldn't admit how you're using the card in your own box. :) You may want to get a Yahoo account and then a new CCO account to get a little anonymity behind you! Re: How to get the activation key for my clone Pix? [7:36561]
I don't think he needs to worry about reprise from Cisco if it is just for study. I'm interested in this too but from a tinkering "how does it work" perspective. There are lots of confusing things about the pix software install/upgrades/downgrades and then add in the activation keys and serial numbers. Not even close to the confusion of trying to upgrade catalyst supervisor engines from 2 to 5 and having to go one step at a time. Ah, if all things were easy like 2500 images :) Subject: RE: How to get the activation key for my clone Pix? > You got a good price on the flash card > > However, this is not a wise move. Now, nowlet's not threaten each other. I'm sure the guy is just messing around with this to see if it's possible to get the contraption to just work. Besides, what's the big deal anyway? I doubt he has any intentions of selling anything or doing something outrageous like that anyway. It's sort of interesting anyway - like the whole idea of porting the JunOS onto a unix box and seeing if you can still capture most of the functionality of their routers. -Original Message- From: Jason Sullivan To: Athony Jones; [EMAIL PROTECTED]; [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: 2/26/2002 4:58 PM Subject: RE: How to get the activation key for my clone Pix? Yahoo! RE: How to get the activation key for my clone Pix [7:36574]
First, Jason made an observation, not a threat. :) Second, there's a fine line between lab and real-life with things like that, and I could certainly appreciate that aspect... It's one thing to do it on your own and "tinker", it's another to post stuff blatantly in a public forum. If nothing else, perhaps everyone else isn't quite so ethical as yourself about it? Third, the Juniper Olives were blessed by Juniper in the beginning, so it's not like they're a random hack... Now, however, they aren't, and the there is a plausible threat from Juniper about dissemination of that information. Oh, and fourth, check around EBay, there is one idiot who has cloned the PIX and decided to put it on EBay. So there's your move beyond tinkering. Now that all that is done, can we get back to studying? :) -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of Roger Sohn Sent: Tuesday, February 26, 2002 8:12 PM To: '[EMAIL PROTECTED] '; '[EMAIL PROTECTED] ' Subject: RE: How to get the activation key for my clone Pix? Jason, This is a **really bad idea** (tm) Assuming that this is for a lab :-) , a better idea would be to go ahead and buy a PIX 501 - you should be able to do most of the tasks required by the CCIE Security lab on that. And don't worry about the karma, there aren't any dumb questions, unless you break NDA. Frank Jimenez, CCIE #5738 Systems Engineer Cisco Systems, Inc. Nice purchase on the flash card, btw However, this is not a wise move. RE: How to get the activation key for my clone Pix [7:36627]
Somebody's already been selling 'em on EBay. And I never said legal action should be brought against anyway... I merely said it wasn't a bright idea to discuss it in a public forum where Cisco people were at. As for discouraging the program, I hardly think this would do it. You don't see people cloning ATM boxes, or VoIP stuff, do ya? So the argument of this is a cost-effective marketing tool for the CCIE program hasn't historically been a problem. *shrug* If people want to do it, they'll do it. However, I don't think it is advisable to discuss it publically, nor sell it. Whether to another person for "study purposes only" or whatever... Control gets lost after that. And you can get a 501 for the same price, if not less than the 16 meg card anyway, so what the hell is the point in building your own? It's not the price-point! RE: How to get the activation key for my clone Pix [7:36583]
Just for the record.. I picked up a 501 NEW in the box for $401.00 US and no shipping. Just sales tax. This was not 3DES.. just plain of DES and 10 users. Works like a top.. Place is in FL but apparently they use IngramMicro as the fulfillment center(still had the lable) The new 506E pricing just got came in at $1,100 which like they said, is cheaper then before. SonicWall is in serious trouble with these price points. I use both the PIX is a better firewall for the price. I have no experience with Nokia so I can not comment on their product vs. a PIX. In my own lab a I have a 506. I would like to have another pix with a dmz interface. I am sure pretty sure they will cover pix to pix and dmz in the ccie security. But even on ebay to buy a 520 with three interfaces usually runs over $2k. I have a full lab at home - atm, token ring, isdn, frame - ten routers and three switches. Another $2k to $3k for a pix with three interfaces is beyond my reach. RE: How to get the activation key for my clone Pix [7:36638]
Personally? I have two 520's that I got a sweet deal on (EBay). But other than that, what is the functional difference between having two 501's and two of something higher? By that, I mean what is the difference between setting up VPN's to the outside interfaces versus a DMZ? What is the big deal? There's nothing that you can't test yourself on with a pair of 501's that will be that dramatically different with 506's, 515's or whatever The difference would be in the permissions or translations, but as long as you understand that difference, I don't see what the big deal is. Other than playing around for emulating a customers network, I've really never used my DMZ interfaces for lab testing. So if I didn't have them, it wouldn't affect me one way or the other. -Original Message- From: Wes Stevens [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Wednesday, February 27, 2002 8:56 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Cc: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: RE: How to get the activation key for my clone Pix? Scott, Have you purchased a smartnet contract for your 520's and other routers? By the book the software is not tranferable and your pix's and routers are no more legal then the code in the pix flash card that was bought on ebay. >From: "Scott Morris" >Reply-To: "Scott Morris" >To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] >Subject: RE: How to get the activation key for my clone Pix [7:36638] >Date: Wed, 27 Feb 2002 09:58:30 -0500 > >Personally? RE: How to get the activation key for my clone Pix [7:36638]
No we were talking about the legality of using the pix flash board in a pc in a home lab. Cisco cannot tell me what to do with the hardware I purchase. As far as the software in the flash if it is bought on ebay it is not legal to use it. But my point is that is the same on any software in flash on any used Cisco device. If the flash card is bought new through Cisco or a distributor it is not clear that using it in a non Cisco pix is illegal. As for the person selling the homemade pix on ebay he also is doing nothing illegal as long as all he is selling is hardware. Just as with any Cisco used device it is the responsibility of the buyer to make the software that will be used on the device legal. >From: "Scott Morris" >Reply-To: >To: "'Wes Stevens'" >CC: >Subject: RE: How to get the activation key for my clone Pix [7:36638] >Date: Wed, 27 Feb 2002 11:24:20 -0500 > >That was STILL not the conversation we were having... > >It doesn't have to do with purchasing a router or a firewall and being >technically licensed to use the code or not... > >It has to do with purchasing a small PIECE of the router or firewall, using >it to build something NEW that most definitely is NOT a Cisco box, and then >either talking about it publically and/or selling it. Correct. but the discussion we were having was regarding particular firewalls over another specifically for the purpose of studying for the CCIE Security test. Therefore nothing like "real life". :) For a real network, you are absolutely 100% correct! RE: How to get the activation key for my clone Pix [7:36646]
Jason, I know that the software is not transferable. My point is that buying a pix flash card on ebay and using the code in it is no worse then buying a router and using the code in it's flash. There are on any given day 65 pages of cisco gear out on ebay not to mention all the other resellers. Legal action would not be an effect way to handle the issue. The key on the pix install is for des functionality and I suspect was put in for export control reasons. But a similar structure would be needed to do any type of software control. Cisco must feel that the advantages of smartnet bring in a high enough percentage of the used routers to make the added headaches of software keys not justified. Another question - If pix flash card is bought new through a cisco distributor and put into a pc instead of a pix, what is the policy? >From: "Jason Sullivan" >To: "Wes Stevens" >Subject: RE: How to get the activation key for my clone Pix? >Date: Wed, 27 Feb 2002 07:56:10 -0700 > >Actually if you buy a router on E-bay you don't own the software and it is >illegal. > > >Software Transfer and Licensing >Overview >Like many high-tech companies that produce software, Cisco adopts a policy >of non-transferability of its software in order to protect its intellectual >property rights. If it's any consolation, yes. And also upgraded one of them after purchase (2meg to 16meg). RE: How to get the activation key for my clone Pix [7:36638]
That was STILL not the conversation we were having... It doesn't have to do with purchasing a router or a firewall and being technically licensed to use the code or not... It has to do with purchasing a small PIECE of the router or firewall, using it to build something NEW that most definitely is NOT a Cisco box, and then either talking about it publically and/or selling it. THAT is the conversation we were having. I don't think anyone cares that someone has a bunch of Mercedes hood ornaments at their home. If they go out and purchase a cheap car and stick the Mercedes hood ornament on it, some people may think it's funny, others not. If the person then tried to tell everyone about their new Mercedes or worse yet, tried to SELL their Mercedes THAT is a problem. Anyway... Enough bantering on this and going nowhere... I have work to do. -Original Message- From: Wes Stevens [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Wednesday, February 27, 2002 10:48 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Cc: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: RE: How to get the activation key for my clone Pix [7:36638] Scott, I am not trying to have this "degrade into personal territory ", truly not my intent. I would venture to say that the majority of home labs have not purchased smartnet contracts. Many people seem to feel that it is un ethical to use code in a pix board purchased on ebay but do not have the same problem with the code that comes in flash on router or switches purchased on ebay. RE: How to get the activation key for my clone Pix [7:36687]
hmm as far as I know the S/N is dependent on the special S/N written in block of BIOS (onboard flash) of the intel motherboard. That number is compared with the key during the boot They used http://www.VxWorks.com as a platform for Cache Engines, LD and perhaps for pix also For instance, for CE, bootstrap is checking the MB serial and also HDD rom versions... if they are not valid (made for cisco) then software is not loaded greetz alex > -Original Message- > From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of > Athony Jones > Sent: Tuesday, February 26, 2002 9:02 PM > To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]; [EMAIL PROTECTED] > Subject: How to get the activation key for my clone Pix? > > > Hi Everyone, > After struggling for the past two days, I have > successfully cloned a Pix firewall by using my PC. > I plug the 16MB flash card into the PC's ISA slot > and the PC recognize that it is a Pix flash card > (cost me $400.00).
