Paul,

What would you say are the new additions in this exam compared to the
recently retired BSCI & BCMSN exams.

What are the extra topics one has to focus on?

I heard it was pretty difficult. I was wondering how they were going to go
through all that material in only 55 questions. Thanks for the input! I
guess I will have to find some new study material.

RE: Exam #642-891 BSCI/BCMSN Composite Exam [7:74915]

2003-09-05 Thread Paul Murphy
Scott,

I just took the composite exam this morning and passed.

First of all, the information given on the cisco site,

is incorrect. There are 88 questions, not 55-65 and the test is not 60
minutes, its' 120 minutes.

To study for the exam, I used Sybex-BSCI and
Sybex-Switching(copyright2003)and Sybex-CCIE study guide (copyright 2003).

I "highly" recommend you read the CCIE study guide, also.

Difficulty level on a 1-10 scale... 8 (in my opinion).

Exam #642-891 BSCI/BCMSN Composite Exam [7:74915]

2003-09-05 Thread Scott Tierney
Has anyone taking this new composite exam yet? I went and bought both the
BSCI/BCMSN books that Cisco recommended for training for this exam, but I'm
not finding all the info that I need in there. I see on the blue print that
there is a lot of Voice, QoS in the exam, but didn't find any of that in my
two books. Am I missing something (and that wouldn't be the first time) or
can someone tell me what links that they used to study for these sections.

One last thing, was it a hard test? :)

2003-09-05 Thread Scott Tierney
Karl, did you find what you were looking for? It is my understanding that
the 642-891 is the only test that you need to take to renew both
certifications. That is if you are already a NP/DP. According to the Cisco
website, you are being tested only on BSCI/BCMSN. Atleast that is my
understanding.

Exam #642-891 BSCN/BCMSN Composite Exam. [7:74077]

2003-08-17 Thread Karl HUTCHINSON
Has anyone taken #642-891 the BSCI and BCMSN Composite exam? I have tried
to find it on the www.2test.com site to no avail either to book or its cost
in US Dollars, UK Pounds or Euros. It seems to be replacing #642-841
Foundations which does not seem to be re-incarnated in any other form as
BCRAN has now to be taken seperately like CIT has to be.

The other strange thing I noted was that the CCNP recertification for the
future specifies #642-891 alone! No BCRAN questions it appears on
re-certification. What is happening to BCRAN? This exam also is slightly
strange as it is only 60 minutes instead of the usual 75 or 90. With the
dropping of BCRAN in CCDP where is remote access off to, no more Modems or
ISDN? Isn't progress rapid or wonderful...

Passed BCMSN Thanks to all [7:72598]

2003-07-18 Thread David Vital
Once again, the topics covered here and last minute questions answered by
group members have paid off. 2 down, 2 to go. Time to start chewing thru
BCRAN. I thought the Switching exam was definately easier than the BSCI
test. Only had two things throw me. One was a network diagram that I was
supposed to mark as an answer to the question and I could swear that the box
in the lower right hand corner said "more" I hadnd't finished answering
the question but wanted to know what more there was so I clicked it..and
it moved on to the next question. So, I'm sure I got that wrong. The other
issue was questions about 3500XL switches. I don't recall seeing anything
in any study material saying that they were included in the test. I've
worked with them and done some reading on them so I wasn't totally in the
dark, but it freaked me out for a minute.

Now it's time for BCRAN.guess I'll start tonight.

Andy,

You have written a terrific review and mini study-guide, as you always do.

I didn't know you had posted this when I wrote my review of CCNP Recert,
which condemned the BCMSN exam. :-) Didn't you find a lot of the questions
badly written?

Your explanation of the topics is right-on and very helpful.

I had a hard time with this part, despite my affinity for design:

"Identify the correct Cisco Systems product solution, given a set of network
switching requirements."

Do you have a URL that would help me learn that better?? Or do I have to go
through gazillions of URLs to get a good feel for that. Due to the economy,
I haven't helped many customers in Southern Oregon install new switches,
except for some low-end ones. THANKS.

Priscilla

RE: does BCMSN include LANE [7:56051]

2002-10-23 Thread Neolen capra
Well, I took the exam today, and there was not one question on
LANE, although cisco's response when I asked them was "maybe yes
maybe no", well not in those exact words.
I guess the cost effectivness of ethernet over LANE has slowly
killed it off to the point that cisco won't cover it in their exams.
I'm happy to say I passed.
Thanks,

Re: does BCMSN include LANE [7:56051]

2002-10-22 Thread Neal Rauhauser
I passed BCMSN almost two years ago and there wasn't a lick of LANE in
sight. 10/100/1000 ethernet and layer three switching have pretty much
slain every lick of ATM/Token Ring out there and Cisco's exams reflect
the changes in the market.

Today I walked in to a place to do an eval and I found Cabletron
ATM+TR ... first time I've seen it in production in at least three years
and part of the deal is to yank the stuff out and replace it with
ethernet.

Karen Webb's book is good. I would also recommend the Cisco Press "Cisco LAN
Switching" book by Kennedy Clark and Kevin Hamilton ISBN 1-57870-094-9 for
the SWTCH (BCMSN) 640-604 exam.

I have both books and find myself using them frequently when faced with
switching questions and problems. You should always use a couple of
different sources when studying. Also, don't forget the Cisco website. Cisco
pulls many questions for its exams directly from their site that aren't
covered in depth in any of the books.

There's a possibility that you may see some ATM, but if you did, it would
probably be regarding trunking with Multiprotocol Over ATM. Also, there's a
possibility of some ATM regarding Campus Design Implementation. The reason
that I say this is because there are chapters/sections on these topics in
the Cisco Press Cisco LAN Switching book, which is another book you should
seriously consider going through before your exam.

Also, just because it's not specifically in the blueprint doesn't mean you
won't see it. Cisco likes to throw in that little sentence that states,
"However, other related topics may also appear on any specific delivery of
the exam".

RE: Looking for people preparing for BCMSN 650-504Exam [7:44731]

2002-05-22 Thread Kevin Hunt

I passed switching today. Will pass Support tomorrow and then I'll be a NP.
This test is more theory than any others and there are at least 15 "gimmee"
questions that would be better served on a CompTia N+ test. There are about
12 really hard questions, and the rest are not very difficult if you know
the material. REALLY know the difference's between the command's on CatOS
and IOS. REALLY know VTP, trunking, etc
It's longer but easier than routing and remote access.

Hi all, Ill be taking my third CCNP exam on tuesday, so I thought I would
ask previous test takers for some advice, with out violating NDA of coarse.
Im also enrolled in CCNP Cisco Networking Academy at a local College. I have
a good instructor and have done alot of labs using Cat. 2900xl's, Cat. 4000
w/RSM and various router platforms. The Academy has really been great, we go
into extream detail with the labs (all designed by Cisco of coarse) and ive
been able to pass Routing and Remote access. But im always suprised by one
or more areas on the tests. Any advice is welcome.

P.S. What kind of product specific questions do they ask?

I have completed that course, I would suggest if you can getting a set based
and ios based switch, Cat1900 and Cat5000 are fine!

I used a mix of 3548's, 6509's and also a few 1900's for my exam!
Its a good idea to really practice the trunking and vlan commands on both!

Hope that helps!Anthony Ramsey wrote:

RE: bcmsn [7:31538]

2002-01-16 Thread Kaminski, Shawn G

I would suggest the CCxx Productions practice tests
(www.ccxxproductions.com) because they cover the same amount if not more
than Boson and are much less expensive. I know that people are bias towards
Boson on this group, but going the CCxx route would save people a lot of
money. I know that everyone doesn't like people pushing products on this
group, but I think this is for the best for people trying to get certified.
Most of us have already spent a fortune getting certified. Every little bit
saved helps.

(Disclaimer: I helped write the CCxx Productions materials)

pick up the Exam Cram Switching book from Richard Deal. It is inexpensive (I
think $29.95 new, probably around $19.00 or less used at Amazon) I found
this to be an excellent condensed book that covered quite a bit.

Just a quick note on the 1900s. The old 1900c switches, (size of a pizza

(software upgradeable to Enterprise edition) and enterprise catalyst
switches (1924-EN), you can choose IOS from the menu and is just like a

First off, let me say "Shame on me" for not being clear enough. There were
indeed other 2900 models that were set based, like a 2-slot Cat5000 but you
couldn't change the hardware. I have one of those, it's a Catalyst 2901.
But these were before the XL series. As fas as my comment about the newer
switches being deeper and using a DB9 console port, I may be confusing those
with older 1900s instead of 2900s.

Just let me know if I can spread anymore misinformation =)

Cat 2900XL

Cat 8500

No idea what the CLI looks like, but Clark's book seems in indicate that it
was developed with the CatOS in mind...

RE: Switch types for BCMSN [7:29391]

2001-12-17 Thread Leigh Anne Chisholm

I've got one of the older 2900XL switches that can't be upgraded to the
newest 2900XL IOS software. It isn't deeper than any other 2900XL switch
I've seen. It also uses a standard console cable - the same that you would
use with a Cisco router.

My "early" 2900XL is also IOS-based, and not CatOS nor menu-driven.

The 2948G layer 3 switch (and 2980 I'd assume as well although I haven't
kept on top of switch releases and this one I'm not familiar with) use CatOS
commands but these switches are not part of the XL line. And if I recall
correctly, the old obsoleted 2901 switch was also CatOS based (and again
isn't part of the XL line).

The 2900XL series is funky in that although it does use IOS-based commands,
they don't follow the traditional commands - so yes Dennis you are correct.
Whether you're correct on which commands differ, I can't confirm that at the
moment (although I do recall that the trunking and portfast commands are
different and irritatingly so).

Cisco has had two releases of the "2900XL" series. The early ones were
deeper and (I believe) used a 9 pin console cable. I seem to remember that
they did not have the XL logo. Confirmation/denial requested from the list.

For set based command switches then best to be specific: 2901, 2926.

BTW 4000s are set based. 3500XL are IOS based.

I believe you are correct that the earlier 2900XL switches were (much)
deeper and required a DB9 console connector. All of the 2900s I've ever
used were IOS based, not set based. However, I can't say I've used all of
the different models 2900 out there =)

BCMSN Passed! [7:27086]

2001-11-21 Thread Mark Odette II

Well, I finally got all those silly MS tests out of the way (Upgrading to
W2K MCSE), and finally got to re-focus on writing the Cisco Switching exam.

Passed with decent marks too- 827.

Anybody looking to know this baby out, you definitely need to know all of
the topics listed in the Exam Objectives. If you absolutely can't get your
hands on some Cisco Switches and a C4500 router, then your next best bet to
get passed this beast, AND REALLY LEARN How to configure Cisco Switching -
Invest in the Cisco CIM for Lan Switching.

One thing though- Don't rely on it for MLS, as it doesn't even cover it :(

For that, you'll just have to memorize the commands for configuring MLS, and
all the associated config/hardware required for it.

But, if you CAN get your hands on at least one IOS and one SET-based
switch Do so, practice, practice, practice... and you'll ace this test
easy.

IMHO, Just the Cisco Press BCMSN book will not get MLS or Multicast in your
brain to the level required to be proficient. I suggest reading, and then
re-reading the Sybex BCMSN Study guide to help with this.

Well, off to BCRAN by next Friday!

Cheers and Happy ThanksGiving!!

I also read the BCMSN Ciscopress book and the ExamCram book. I've worked
with 2900xl,3500xl, and 5500 switches.

I like reading two books one technical and the other less technical book. I
also like using the cramsession study guides as a final quick read before
the test.

2 books + as much hands on as I can get + boson. That has never failed me.
I made it a habit to ask people what they used to prepare with to get an
idea of who best covers the subject.

Thanks.

I passed the BCMSN test yesterday. Three down, one to go. I'm taking CIT
next Friday. By the way, for those of us in the USA, tests are now $125 as
of November 1. I wish I would have scheduled my CIT test last week, I could
have spent that $25 on a nice steak at the Outback. Oh well.

I passed it at the beginning of the months.
I had questions about :
VTP, a lot of trunking, CGMP, IGMP, spantree convergence & timers, design
(which switch to put in which layer), troubleshooting (span config, leds on
CATALYST), questions about ports config (duplex, speed ...) on IOS, CatOS,
some questions on MLS (access-list & flowmask, cache entry, some config) ...

Re: BCMSN some question need help!!! [7:21836]

2001-10-03 Thread Stephane LITKOWSKI

Sorry but i was wrong, after a verification :

I think that :

Question 2 is not A
because, in case of RSM, you don't need to put the "set mls include"
command. It's automatic and MLS is by default enable on CATALYST that
support it.

So I think the answer is B.

Sorry for the confusion ...

there much ATM questions in the exam? What is the passing score? Was the
exam difficult? Are there many ambiguous questions?

Any infomration on how to approach this exam would be appreciated.
