Stus-List Recommendations to rebuild hydraulic cylinders for backstay

2023-11-17 Thread Allen Miles via CnC-List
Good morning All,

Septima has moved from Hampton Roads, VA to Bayville, NJ. Upon arrival we
noticed that the hydraulic cylinders for the backstay were leaking. Does
anyone have recommendations on a reputable service to rebuild them in the
NJ area?

They are Sailtec branded. However, the marina we are in refuses to do
business with them based on previous bad experiences. Love to support local
businesses but also want a quality job. Any suggestions appreciated.

Thanks and have a great weekend,

Re: Stus-List Anyone racing C&C 30 MKII?

2018-10-14 Thread Allen Miles via CnC-List
In response to several questions, Sailing is basic physics.

   1. You have the under body, the hull, keel and rudder and
   2. you have the Sails, in my case a dacron North main and a funny
   material 140 Genoa.

Each of these generate forces that have to be balanced to move quickly and
efficiently.
My winged keel is a NACA low speed symmetric airfoil and it generates lift
at a 4 degree angle of attack.
The hull carries its beam well aft and the underwater shape varies with
heel angle tending to come up into the wind if heeled more than 18 degrees.
The rudder balances the underwater forces and shouldn't need much playing
after you balance all the forces. Think of your autohelm.
I have all the sail controls needed to shape the main and Genoa. All are
adjustable from the cockpit.
The main sheet traveler is mounted on the bridge deck and is equipped with
a Harken Windward Car system.
Once the main is properly trimmed with the correct twist, the trimmer
doesn't change the foil shape, just its attack angle.
The Genoa is adjusted for power. I have adjustable cars to do that and a
hydraulic backstay.

Hope that answers the questions I've received. I've been real busy
cleaning up Michael mess.

2018-10-11 Thread Allen Miles via CnC-List
Hi Doug, I had Septima for 24 years. She has a winged keel. Sails really
fast and high if you limit heel to 17-18 degrees and no more than 4 degrees
rudder. I marked the leather wheel cover to indicate 4 degrees port or
starboard. Helms person puts approprite mark TDC, tells main trimmer, who
is playing mainsail lateral position with the Harken windward car on
traveler mounted on bridge deck, how helm feels. Too light, raise car, too
heavy, lower car an inch. The keel's foils are very efficient at racing
speeds. You don't want to stall them out.

I like the cleanliness of the installation, but is there a way to mount a
windlass that doesn't have the chain running over the locker and
effectively closing it off? I normally store two anchor rodes in the
locker and want access to the second where the bottom dictates.

I too am considering adding a windlass to ease retrieving the heavier
anchor on my 30-2. It appears to me that C&C used a standard forward
hatch/ chain locker assembly on their boats. Am I correct in that
observation? If so, is there also a windlass configuration where the
entire unit is mounted on the locker?

Re: Stus-List Fuel tanks

Is your tank shaped to fit the hull (like on my 30-2) or just rectangular?
If is shaped to fit an overflow pan that follows the hull shape I have a
recommendation.

I agree with Andy. I never entered Shark River because I didn't believe it

Re: Stus-List Cockpit Shower on 30 mkII

I mounted a hot/cold shower on the outside of the starboard locker in place
of the ac receptacle which I moved to the starboard coaming where it's
easier to plug in the shore power cord. It's out of the way under the helm
seat, but when you come back from a swim and climb the stern ladder it's
right at hand for a rinse off and the water just flows right out the
transom.

Tackled the problem differently on Septima. I installed a fresh water

the Admiral wanted fresh water feed), no chance for overflow on port tacks,
no sea water in the boat (that thru hull is closed all the time. Use tank

Re: Stus-List Pedestal wiring

2016-06-28 Thread Allen Miles via CnC-List
I mounted my Ram mike on the stern push pit rail mid way between the ladder opening and the turn on the starboard side. It's easy to fish one wire from the stern locker through the tubing. It's attached to a small box structure that accepts its clip.  It's easy to access, listen to calls, and, being hand held, it's far enough from the helm to not impact the compass.Allen MilesS/V Septima  C&C 30-2Hampton, VA-Original Message-

Paul,If your goal is to put the Ram mike close by at the helm, I’d advocate for a cockpit bulkhead mount rather than a helm mount.  The reason being is that inside every microphone/speaker happens to be an active magnet and the movement of that magnet tends to play havoc with compass headings.    Now you may be like the myriad of boaters that barely glance at the compass and rely on the GPS at the helm, but if you are a compass user, I would set up a deviation table for the boat once the Ram mike is in place. Be aware that it will change when the speaker or the microphone is active and if you happen to move the mike around when sailing.Chuck GilchrestS/V Half Magic1983 LF 35Padanaram, MA From: CnC-List [mailto:cnc-list-boun...@cnc-list.com] On Behalf Of paul.hood via CnC-ListSent: Tuesday, June 28, 2016 1:03 AMTo: cnc-list-requ...@cnc-list.com; cnc-list@cnc-list.comCc: paul.hood Subject: Stus-List Pedestal wiring Im trying to send wiring (Transducer and vhf/power) to the Chart plotter and alao to a ram mike at the pedestal  Wire ends are factory and told by Standard Horizon not to cut.  They are 3/4" and 7/8" diameter each Pedestal Guard rail is barely 1" O.D.  I'm looking for recommendations. 2016-03-04 Thread Allen Miles via CnC-List
Never raced Septima since we re-positioned her to Hampton. She's really a
cruiser racer, but well equipped for club racing.

I just received preliminary notice of the upcoming Southern Bay Race Week and
Norfolk
Harborfest Challenge. What's involved in racing in cruising class and what sort
of boats would we be facing? What are the winds and tides like in these
venues? She has a wing keel so her PRHF is somewhere in the 140s. Can we be
competitive?

I'd have to assemble a crew. Oh, and reread the rules.

Re: Stus-List 35 modified keel

2015-04-23 Thread Allen Miles via CnC-List
Just an observation and maybe not relevant for a C&C 35.I have a C&C 30-2 with a shoal keel, my close friend Richard Stoltenhoff had a sister ship SeaCure with the deep keel,  Both boats were race equipped white sail boats. I've sailed both boats and they were well matched in the winds we had on LI Sound.  When Richard moved south to the Albemarle Sound (20 foot average depth where we sail, but tight 6' entrance to the creek and docks), he had his keel shortened and a Mars Metal bulb applied. We raced his boat after my admiral decided she didn't want her boat dinged by "ignorant" racers. Although SeaCure remained fast and retained her stability with the bulb, we had great difficulty fetching marks.  She just wouldn't point as high as Septima and the extra tacks or overstands just killed us.After Septima was hit by a lightening strike, I had her short hauled and ironically she was placed adjacent to SeaCure on the hard.  I looked at both keel stubs and they seemed to my eye to be identical.  My lead keel portion however had significant additional longitudinal area.  His deep mounted bulb was offset by my wing and stability was very similar.  My lateral resistance though was much greater and we could climb our way to a mark without pinching.Allen Miless/v SeptimaHampton, VA-Original Message-

Interestingly enough I've just written an article on Mars Metal for the next issue of Professiomal Boatbuilder Magazine. Their ability to provide not only a bolt on two piece bulb but the design service to recommend the weight of bulb to achieve the same sailing stability as the deep draft keel is discussed in the article. It has been a very successful program for the company.Rob MazzaSent from Samsung Mobile  Original message From: Paul Baker via CnC-List Date:04-22-2015 11:56 PM (GMT-05:00) To: cnc-list@cnc-list.com Subject: Stus-List 35 modified keel I'm sure you've all seen this, I often accidentally delete list emails without reading them, anyway, an interesting keel mod:http://www.sailnet.com/forums/general-discussion-sailing-related/197361-c-c-35-mod-bulb-keel-effect.htmlCheers,PaulOrange Crush1974 27 MkIISidney, BC

Stus-List Crew duties during a race

2015-04-22 Thread Allen Miles via CnC-List
I need some help here.  Our local sailing club on Albemarle Sound supports a low key racing program (no spin, but olympic triangle and hot dog course).   They are trying to increase the number of boats racing and that requires additional crew.  Remembering some great threads here on crew duties a year or two ago I volunteered to conduct some classroom  and on board sessions to bring new crew up to speed.  Unfortunately, I now can't find those threads. Can you direct me to where they're archived?Allen MilesS/V Septima  C&C 30-2Hampton, VA
