Fwd: [cobirds] Red-breasted Mergansers, Windsor, Weld Co. - additional note on pond location
Cobirders, I noticed this pond does not appear on Google maps or Mapquest, but it is just off the corner where 17th St turns east nevertheless. Perhaps it is one of the gravel pit ponds in that area. It often contains waterfowl. Larry Griffin Windsor, CO --- Forwarded Message Subject:[cobirds] Red-breasted Mergansers, Windsor, Weld Co. Date: Sun, 4 Apr 2021 13:23:06 -0600 From: Larry Griffin To: cobirds@googlegroups.com Happy Easter COBirders, As of 12 noon, there were approximately 40 gorgeous Red-breasted Mergansers in a pond just SW of 17th St and 392 (Main St) in Windsor. Turn south on 17th St and park at the corner across from the Associates in Family Medicine building. There were about 10 Common Mergansers and a lone Horned Grebe with the RBME's. [cobirds] Sandhill Cranes, Larimer Co
Large flocks of migrating Sandhill Cranes are passing over with the current wind storm. They are flying south and rather high. I saw several flocks numbering in the hundreds between 3:45 and 4pm. We are located in west Windsor near I 25. [cobirds] Parasitic Jaeger, Windsor Lake, Weld Co.
The jaeger was still present when I left at 3 pm today. It was near the center of the north side and rather close to the shore (10-15'). I viewed it across the lake with my scope for about 20 minutes from the park at the end of Birch Street. It was mostly resting on the water and preening. At one point it took to the air to harass a Ring-billed Gull. As the dogfight progressed, the gull turned the tables and aggressively dove on the jaeger - fun to watch! The jaeger then settled down on the water in about the same spot as before. Another observation to share - as I was driving along LCR 5 before visiting Windsor Lake, there was an enormous flock of white-cheeked geese, perhaps 5,000+, settling into the fields just north of the Budweiser Events Center between I-25 and LCR 5. They nearly darkened the sky! Among them were a few white geese, sp? (20 or so). [cobirds] Early nesting Black-capped Chickadees, Loveland, Larimer Co.
During a visit this morning to the Guarantee Bank on the SE corner of Lincoln Ave. and 29th St. in Loveland, we noticed a pair of Black-capped Chickadees constantly flying back and forth to a rather obvious 2" nest hole on the SW corner of the building. Their behavior certainly suggested they are feeding nestlings already. The hole is about 12' up in a stucco-like section of the wall. I suspect it may have been excavated by a flicker attempting to create a nesting cavity. I thought the combination of unusual location and early nesting activity made it worth reporting. [cobirds] Common Poorwill calling - Ft. Collins, Larimer Co.
Hi Cobirders, Last night just before dark I heard the unmistakable call of a Common Poorwill for a few minutes at my home in SE Ft. Collins. It was so close and loud, we first heard it inside the house! Although I've seen/photographed them here before, this was the first time I've heard one calling out of its normal breeding range - a real treat. [cobirds] Lesser Black-backed Gull, Ft. Collins, Larimer
Hi Cobirders, I visited Portner Reservoir (in Fossil Creek Park on South Lemay Ave.) this morning between 11am - 12 noon. It was about 50% ice-free. There was a nice mix of waterfowl and gulls present. A hundred or so gulls were on the ice. They were mostly Ring-billed, but also perhaps a dozen Herring and two handsome adult Lesser Black-backed Gulls were in the mix. Also, one Mute Swan was there along with the usual Redheads, Ring-necked Ducks, American Wigeon, Mallards and American Coot. There were many hundreds of white-cheeked geese of both species coming and going as well. Male Red-winged Blackbirds were calling from the cattails along the edge, perhaps setting up their territory early on this beautiful and unseasonably warm February day. Larry Griffin Ft. [cobirds] American Woodcock, Larimer Co.
Hi Cobirders, I arrived at Bobcat Ridge NA a little before 2pm. Parking was available at that moment, but the NA was clearly busy, not surprising considering the beautiful sunny windless 60 degree Sunday. Four or five birders were on the woodcock and kindly pointed it out to me. It was working east on the north side of the stream, feeding intensely. Its feeding behavior was fascinating, somewhat dowitcher-like, but more of a precise, slow bobbing up and down, a bit like a spotted sandpiper does. I was rewarded with a few decent photos. Once fed, it settled down into the leaf litter and became virtually invisible. I watched for its reappearance a full 30 minutes, but it had either escaped or settled in for a long winter's nap. [cobirds] Steller's jays, SE Fort Collins, Larimer Co.
Hello Cobirders, We've had 1-2 Steller's jays in our yard daily since Nov. 1. Today there were 3, possibly more, mobbing the resident Cooper's Hawk, along with blue jays and black-billed magpies. We're about 5 miles east of their usual haunts in the foothills. This is the first time we've seen them here in 14 years - most enjoyable visitors. Other birds of interest lately - the Cooper's Hawk had a mourning dove breakfast, leaving a huge pile of feathers for us to clean up. We've been feeding a flock of 25+ MO doves, which tend to attract the accipiters. A 1st year Northern Goshawk made an unsuccessful attempt to snag one last week. He paused long enough for a killer photo of him. We also watched a Red-tailed Hawk catch and eat a squirrel. YEA! They don't move quite as fast in the snow. [cobirds] Steller's Jays, SE Fort Collins, Larimer
To continue the thread on Steller's Jays east of the foothills, there was one at my home in SE Ft. Collins on Nov 1st and I photographed another today at my feeders. It could have been the same bird, no way to be sure. I live 4-5 miles east of the foothills. This is only the second time I've seen them here in 15 years. The other time was when we had a winter invasion of Western Scrub-Jays and Steller's Jays a few years back. Am wondering if this might be another invasion year. Larry Griffin Ft. [cobirds] Greater White-fronted Geese, SE Fort Collins, Larimer Co.
Hello COBirders, This afternoon there were two Greater White-fronted geese, one adult and one juvenile, resting on the ice at Portner Reservoir in Fossil Creek Park among several hundred Canada and Cackling geese. It is located off S Lemay Avenue just across from Southridge Greens Golf Course. There are 5-6 aerators in use here, which keep 100 foot circles of water ice-free along the SW edge of the reservoir. These circles have been packed with a variety of ducks and other waterfowl lately, although their numbers were down a bit today. During several recent visits there have usually been: Redheads - several hundred Ring-necked Duck - dozen or so Canvasback - dozen or so Common Goldeneye - 30-40 American Wigeon - 30-40 Northern Pintail - several Lesser Scaup - several Mallard - several dozen American Coot - several dozen Ring-billed Gull - usually 20-30 present, some catching fish on the edge of the open water Great Blue Heron - one today, also fishing successfully The geese have been coming in for several hours each afternoon, sometimes more than 500. The paved trail is quite close to the circles of open water, and afternoon lighting provides nice photo ops as well. RE: [cobirds] Re: No bird seed allowed at BCLP? No fair! How dare they!
I needed to get my two- cents worth in on this thread. One would think the Bear Creek Lake Park management would recognize and appreciate the obvious economic windfall we birders have brought to the Park in order to see the brambling. Has anyone approached management to learn their reasons for the feeding ban, and to point out the potential loss of additional entrance fees from birders? Larry Griffin Ft. [cobirds] Barrow's Goldeneye family, Echo Lake, Clear Creek Co. Aug. 2
Hi all, Sorry for the late report, but we just got back from a 5 day trip based in Fraser and we don't travel with portable computer devices. On the way over, Aug. 2, we went up to Echo Lake to look for the Barrow's Goldeneye family. On arrival at noon they were close to the trail around the lake affording good views and photo ops. We counted _six_ ducklings following mama around. We didn't see any other birders at the time, but Elaine Coley reported only four ducklings seen that morning. So hopefully ours is good news. We also enjoyed photographing an American Three-toed Woodpecker at Monarch Lake in Grand Co. on Aug. 3. And a juvenile Brown-headed Cowbird temporarily confused and surprised us at the summit of Guanella Pass (11,669') above Georgetown on Aug. 5. Larry and Janie Griffin Ft. [cobirds] Duck Lake, Larimer County
Hoping to see several FOS shorebirds that Cade Cropper reported on yesterday, late this morning I visited Duck Lake, which is just south and west of Fossil Creek Reservoir off CO 392. It was quite productive with 13 species of shorebirds and undoubtedly more since there were peep at the far south end which I couldn't ID at that distance. They were: Black-bellied Plover - 6, in handsome spring plumage Semipalmated Plover - approx 10 Killdeer Black-necked Stilt - at least 3 American Avocet - 20+ Willet - at least 2 Lesser Yellowlegs Whimbrel - 1 flyover Sanderling - 10+ Stilt Sandpiper - 6+ Long-billed Dowitcher - approx 40 Wilson's Phalarope - 200+ Red-necked Phalarope - at least 1, probably more In addition, there were hundreds of ducks of 13 species present, including all three teal. Also, from a distance, I viewed the posted pond NW of the Kechter Road overpass of I25 and saw numerous spotted sandpipers, a Marbled Godwit and at least 7-8 Forster's terns among other waterbirds. 56 species including 15 FOS in about an hour and a half made for a satisfying morning. [cobirds] An addition to the Larimer County Red-bellied Woodpecker thread
There was a Red-bellied Woodpecker at my home in SE Fort Collins back on October 26, 2002. I was not yet into digital photography of birds, so I can't provide photo confirmation of the bird. However, I am intimately familiar with the species, having grown up birding in the East. Its unique chiv-chiv call alerted me to its presence even before I saw it. [cobirds] Harris's Sparrow, Ft. Collins, Larimer Co.
A winter adult Harris's Sparrow visited our feeding area in SE Ft. Collins this morning long enough for several photos. A first winter individual was also seen and photographed here on Nov. 19, 2010. In comparing the two, today's bird has a considerable amount of black feathering around the throat, lores and forehead, although some white under the throat remains. It was nice to have one so early in the season. I don't see this species every year. Larry Griffin Ft. [cobirds] Moon birding
To continue with Karl Stecher's delightful moon birding comments, he, along with Jack Hailman, John Terborgh and several other high school birding buddies who became life-long birders/naturalists, introduced me to this fascinating aspect of birding back in the 50's. We would sit for hours watching the full moon in teams of two, one watching, the other recording the data. The approximate size of the bird, relative to the prominent crater, Tycho, (ie: 1/2 T, 1 T, 2 T, etc.) was recorded, as was the direction of flight (for example: in at 8 o'clock, out at 2 o'clock) and the time in seconds to cross the moon. This information gave a rough idea of how high the birds were flying, as well as its geographic direction of flight. Identifiable sounds and shapes (ducks and geese were pretty obvious) were also noted. I don't recall where the data was sent or if this work continued, but I assume it supported worthwhile migration studies. At any rate, it is indeed fun and exciting to watch the nocturnal migration this way. I would encourage any birder with a scope to give it a try during these lovely full moon evenings. [cobirds] Timnath Reservoir update, Larimer Co.
Hi COBirders, I visited Timnath Reservoir this morning from 10am to 1pm. Jim and Karen Schmoker, and Ray and Joan Glabach were also there enjoying the Everglades-like spectacle. We visited the East Bay, the reservoir view at the NE corner in the subdivision and finally, Timnath Park on the south side. I counted 126 Snowy Egrets along the dam in the park and there were at least 50 more on the east side of the reservoir, but no Great Egrets. There were countless hundreds of pelicans and cormorants present, along with many shorebirds too distant for me to ID. I did tally 9 species of shorebirds, most of the ones Nick Komar reported yesterday, plus Long-billed Dowitcher (10) and Least Sandpiper (no Sanderling however). We also saw two Forster's Terns and one Black Tern. Among the numerous Western Grebes we found two Clark's Grebes. Also seen were one each Marsh Wren, adult Bald Eagle, White-faced Ibis and Great-tailed Grackle. This is certainly an exciting spot worth visiting. Larry Griffin Ft. [cobirds] Pacific Loon, McIntosh Lake, Longmont, Boulder Co.
Hi Cobirders, The famous Pacific Loon is still enjoying McIntosh Lake in Longmont as of 10am this morning. I was able to find him in the westernmost arm of the lake out about 100 yards from the dam with my scope from the last parking area close to the lake and dam on Lakeshore Drive. A half mile walk to the west over the dam brought me close enough to get a better view, but I could only obtain poor, but identifiable, digiscoped images of him. He was very active and doing his strange surface feeding with an occasional dive. Cool bird! Larry Griffin Ft. [cobirds] Red-eyed Vireo, SE Ft. Collins, Larimer Co.
COBirders: While working in the yard about noon today, I heard and then saw a singing Red-eyed Vireo in one of our Black Willows, yard bird # 158. It didn't stay around long, perhaps 10 minutes, but I will be keeping an eye and ear out for it tomorrow. Larry Griffin Ft. [cobirds] Tricolored Heron and other Weld County birds, May 5, 2010
COBirders: Mary and Tom France and I visited several sites in Weld Co. today. We found good numbers of Marbled Godwits (30-40), Long-billed Dowitchers (40-50), Wilson's Phalaropes (20), Least Sandpipers (20+), several White-faced Ibis and a couple of Willets, along with the expected waterfowl at Wood's Lake east of Severance along CR74. At Loloff Reservoir (CR 57 at CR 50) there were large flocks of Wilson's Phalaropes (100+) and more Long-billed Dowitchers. A Peregrine Falcon zoomed in hoping to take a shorebird and sending the flocks into the air, but his attempt was unsuccessful. Upon arriving at Lower Latham Reservoir on CR 48, we found a Tricolored Heron in the wetland to the south, which gave us excellent views in flight as it flew west, alighted, then flew back toward us dropping into the marsh on the north side of the road. There were few shorebirds in the area, but we enjoyed the singing Marsh Wrens before leaving. [cobirds] Crossbills at Grandview Cemetery, Ft. Collins, Larimer Co.
Yes, the pair of White-winged Crossbills were present again today along with a few Red Crossbills. I arrived about 10am and Tom France said they had been seen earlier this morning. I spotted them near the SE corner (Section 8) around 11am where they foraged exclusively in the upper parts of the tall blue spruces for about 20-30 minutes, then flew north. Happily, several other birders saw them as well. Larry Griffin Ft. [cobirds] Great Crested Flycatcher (GCFL), Ft. Collins, Larimer Co.
COBirders: The GCFL I reported on the 3rd at our home in SE Ft. Collins was seen yesterday and twice today, first about 9am and again about 1:15pm for approximately 20 minutes. Once more I just missed a photo - digiscoping takes too long to set up! It seems to like our large yard. If anyone in the area wants to try for this bird, email me with your phone number at orchbir...@frii.com and I will call you with the address if and when the bird returns. Meanwhile, I will try to monitor its whereabouts and try again for that ever elusive photo. We are not far from the corner of Harmony Rd. and College Ave. Thanks. Larry Griffin Ft. [cobirds] Great Crested Flycatcher, Ft. Collins, Larimer Co.
COBirders, I had a nice mixed flock of migrants here at the house in late morning in SE Ft. Collins. Best bird was a handsome Great Crested Flycatcher, probably a juvenile as it didn't show much of a crest. Its deep yellow belly contrasted strongly with its gray breast. Its black and white tertials and rufous wings and tail were also well seen. I tried unsuccessfully for a photo. Traveling with it were Yellow Warblers, Wilson's Warblers, Red-breasted Nuthatches. It looks like fall land bird migration is finally here too. Larry Griffin Ft. [cobirds] Neotropic Cormorant and more, Timnath Reservoir, Larimer Co.
COBirders, Tom, Mary France and I spent a most pleasant morning enjoying several thousand waterbirds at two locations on the east side of Timnath Reservoir today. There were at least 3 Black-bellied and several Semipalmated plovers present, along with a dozen or so Long-billed Dowitchers and many Baird's, Least, Semipalmated and Stilt Sandpipers and Wilson's Phalaropes, along with a large assortment of herons, grebes, cormorants and gulls (mostly Franklin's). We couldn't find the Sabine's or Laughing gulls that had been reported. We initially looked for the previously reported Neotropic Cormorant in the roadside pond to the north of the mudflat viewing spot w/o success. But after a couple of hours we came back and a single suspect cormorant was there. While returning to the car for our cameras, it flew off to the NW. We then drove into the newly developing subdivision on the NE side of the reservoir. Following the existing blacktop to its NW end, we found a pond with a dead tree on its N side. A cormorant was perched there and it proved to be the Neotropic. As we were leaving about 12:15pm Mark Peterson arrived and confirmed our ID. The bird was still in this tree when we left. The open water and edges of the main reservoir contained many thousand birds. A steady stream of hundreds of gulls flew in from the east between 11am - 12 noon and congregated on mud flats way out near the west side of the reservoir, beyond reasonable scope range. Its so sad this reservoir has such poor access. Larry Griffin Ft. [cobirds] Least Bittern, Fort Collins, Larimer Co.
At least one (male) Least Bittern made several satisfying flight appearances at the Cottonwood Hollow (Artist's Point pond) site this am. It flew N above the easternmost cattails from the SE corner to about 1/3 of the way to the display board from the S end at 8:30 am. A few minutes later, it flew N 20' or so before dropping back into the cattails. At 9:30 I saw it, or another one, flying N out over the center of the pond. It flew out of my view, which was blocked by vegetation on the spit. I couldn't relocate it before leaving about 10 am. This was the first time I've seen a least bittern since early birding days back in Virginia in the 50's. They were common in the Dyke Marsh along the Potomac River S of Alexandria, VA at that time. Thanks to all those who reported least bitterns there, encouraging me to try for them. Larry Griffin Ft. [cobirds] White-eyed Vireo, Crow Valley CG, Weld Co.
COBirders: I heard and then saw the previously reported singing White-eyed Vireo about 9am this morning at Crow Valley CG. It was not far west of the central parking lot. I photographed a screech-owl that was seen by several others in this same area. It was identified as a Western Screech-Owl, but I wonder if it might be an Eastern. My photos clearly show a pale gray bill although it has relatively strong vertical streaks on the breast. I can forward a photo upon request and would appreciate more input. A fine Red-eyed Vireo was also singing and seen south of the picnic area. The other exciting find was a female American Redstart. Larry Griffin Ft. [cobirds] Record breaking day in the yard - SE Ft. Collins, Larimer Co.
COBirders, My yard list rose to 154 today after adding Northern Waterthrush, Cassin's Vireo and a Clay-colored Sparrow, traveling with a large group of Chipping Sparrows. Numerous Yellow-rumped Warblers, Swainson's Thrushes, Western Tanagers, a Gray Catbird and a Warbling Vireo were the most interesting migrants in the yard, rounding out a most exciting day here. [cobirds] Mute Swan, Ryan Gulch Reservoir, Larimer Co.
The previously reported Mute Swan was still in the area this morning, but it had moved to a smaller, separate pond just to the SE of the main Ryan Gulch Reservoir. It is accessible from another cul-de-sac to the south in that same subdivision off S. Taft Ave. in Loveland. It was in the company of a few other dabblers and divers. Larry Griffin Ft.
