[cobirds] On singing American Dippers
Interesting to read Jeff's report about dippers singing on the Big Thompson river.Later this afternoon, as we were returning to the parking lot at South Platte park, we watched the American Dipper that frequents the river under the C470 bridge. After watching it pick at insects and an old Starbucks cup wrapper, the dipper started spontaneously singing it's beautiful song, which raised our curiosity. According to David Sibley's Guide to Bird Life and Behavior, both sexes of Dippers sing all year long, with a peak early in breeding season. Song establishes breeding territories in the spring, and winter territories in the fall and winter. Rare, out of place and out of season species include: (*) indicates new information on this species; CAPITAL LETTERS are used for very rare species, as listed by the Colorado Bird Records Committee. BARNACLE GOOSE Note this is a rare vagrant to Eastern North America; and extraordinarily rare in Western North America. Populations of both of these geese are increasing in their breeding habitat, and as of 2015 there are thought to be approximately twice as many worldwide Barnacles (880K) as Pink-Footed (410K). Note that Barnacle Geese are for sale as collector's/barnyard specimens to a much greater degree than Pink-Footed Geese. Barnacle Geese are sold as close to Colorado as at least Wisconsin and Michigan, and, so far, no midwestern or western state with sightings have included this bird on its state list. [cobirds] Fawn Brook Inn closing
After 38 years in business, Hermann and Mieke Groicher have sold the Fawn Brook Inn. The new owners will be the same people who own the Rock Creek Tavern and Pizzeria, also in Allenspark. They may remodel and open again, but who knows. The future of bird feeding there is uncertain. The Groicer's received the CFO homeowners/property owners appreciation award in 2006. I wanted to let the birding community know, as the closing date of the sale is Aug 28. The restaurant will close Aug 12. Also, keep Hermann in your thoughts, as he fell on Friday and broke some ribs.Feel free to contact me off line if you'd like more information. [cobirds] Mourning Warbler, Lamar Community College Woods (Prowers County)
This morning at about 8:30 we ran into Dotti Russell in the woods behind Lamar Community College, where she said that she thought she had seen A Mourning Warbler near the north end. Dotti was right! The bird was nearer to the north end, mostly skulking around in the wet scrubby undergrowth. Jane Stulp, Dan and I were all able to get diagnostic views of the bird, but full views were to scarce to come by, and photos couldn't be obtained. The bird spent most of its' time associating with a loose flock that included Yellow Warblers and Common Yellowthroats. Thanks, Dotti! The Great Crested Flycatcher previously reported by Brandon Percival et. al. was whooping it up in the south end of the woods, calling and eating slow moving bugs in the snow dusted environs. In the afternoon at the Meredith Feedlot ponds (Crowley county), 4 Dunlins in breeding plumage were present, as well as Stilt Sandpipers, Red-necked Phalaropes, and a few other expected migratory shorebirds, as well as a handful of Franklin's Gulls. [cobirds] Glossy Ibis at Cherry Creek State Park (Arapahoe County)
This afternoon, Dan and I found a Glossy Ibis associating with 7 White-faced Ibis in the pond across from the model airplane field at Cherry Creek State Park. The birds were methodically feeding in the cattails at the periphery of the pond, and in the wet field to the west of the pond. They disappear for long periods while in the cattails, but make periodic appearances that allow a fairly close look. [cobirds] Whimbrel bonus Long-Billed Curlew, Beebe Draw, Weld County
Coming back from the western slope today, we stopped by the Beebe Draw complex and were able to re-find Steve Mlodinow's lovely Whimbrel. In the south field at that road 42 location, while counting Burrowing Owls, a Long-Billed Curlew was a nice bonus. A great chance to study these 2 ridiculously long billed large shorebirds at once, even if they weren't exactly side by side. The curlew was then chased to the south by a Red-Tailed Hawk. [cobirds] Tree Swallow Chatfield SP, Golden-crowned Sparrow Red Rocks Trading Post, Jefferson County
After cancelling the DFO trio for the abysmal weather in the Denver area yesterday, we were ready to see what was out today. This morning at Red Rocks, the Golden-crowned Sparrow made a couple of cameo appearances over the course of about an hour, one from under the platform feeder, the other at the upper feeding area under the tree by the footpath (in other words, the usual haunts). The sun came out while we were at Chatfield a little later, and while looking toward the Plum Creek area from the sand spit by the marina, a single Tree Swallow patrolled the sky over the Mergansers there. [cobirds] Super Sunday, Rusty Blackbirds (4) Barr Lake below dam, Adams County
We went to Barr Lake this morning, and as the frosty morning fog lifted, we followed Chuck Hundertmark's great directions on the trail below the dam. The fog cleared, and we found a male Rusty Blackbird perched up over the ditch below Barr Lake dam. This bird was just west of the dirt bridge between blinds 67, and spent much of his time feeding in the bright green foliage adjacent to the ditch. As we continued eastward on the path, just east of blind #4,and slightly beyond two grand cottonwoods (which are on the right), 3 more Rusty Blackbirds (2 male one female) were turning over waterlogged leaves in the branch of the ditch that is closest to the dam, and talking amongst themselves. [cobirds] Douglas County, Brant back at Chatfield, Greater White-fronted Goose at Redstone Park
So we set off at about midday to see if we could find the Brant that has been recently frequenting Redstone Park and found. a lovely specked bellied Greater White-fronted Goose associating with Cackling and Canada Geese at the baseball field labeled #2 on the map printable from the Highlands Ranch Metro District's website. So, we went to Chatfield, where, at around 1PM, we found the Brant associating with bunches of Cackling and Canada Geese first just north, then flying just east of the model airplane field, and visible from the parking lot there. [cobirds] Cherry Creek (Arapahoe) Fall Count on Saturday (9/14) is ON, MAJOR route change due to bridge failure inside the park
We have scouted Cherry Creek Reservoir this morning, and are pleased report that we will be able to perform the fall count as planned. HOWEVER, you need to know that there was a buckling of the asphalt involving the bridge that flows over Cottonwood Creek. The park is going to repair the surface, and it can be crossed on foot, but NO CARS can pass over until repairs are performed (which will be done in a time frame to be determined, according to the workmen there this morning). So, if you are coming, you CANNOT get to the West Marina (our 8AM meeting place) by coming into the park on Parker Road. You MUST either come across the dam or enter from Dayton (by Cherry Creek High School). Also, other things that will be of interest to participants: 1. We will be doing MORE WALKING than usual. This is because of the road closure, and because of standing water in places that are not usually wet. 2. Rubber boots or other water impervious footwear will be your friend tomorrow! As the rain appears to be abated, at least for now, water will recede, but paths will be wet, muddy, and grass will be wet. 3. Bug spray will be your second best friend tomorrow. They're out and they're hungry. 4.We are formally counting for a full day tomorrow. Any and all are welcome to stay for any part of the day, or the whole day. Be sure to bring snacks, lunch, and an amount of water appropriate for the duration of your birding day. 5. We will be asking you to sign a waiver first thing in the morning. Feel free to call if you have questions, and don't be afraid of the conditions, they will add a real treasuring hunting element to this great count! [cobirds] Better News on Cherry Creek, temporary road repair complete
So, the time frame for the bridge repair over Cottonwood Creek was apparently today. You can enter Cherry Creek by the usual routes, just look for water going across the road just past the 12 mile picnic area (i.e.in the usual place). And, trails are wet and muddy in a lot of areas and dry in some areas, so water resistant footwear is still in order, but don't worry about slogging knee deep in mud or water, as we will not be doing these things. [cobirds] Cherry Creek State Park (Arapahoe County) DFO Bird trip, some goodies still there
Today at Cherry Creek State Park, 20 birders were able to see the continuing juvenile Glaucous and Iceland Gulls (Thanks to Glenn Walbek for first spotting these great birds), which were hanging out this morning at the bird observation platform off of the Prairie Loop. We also had 5 Snow Geese (2 adults and 3 juveniles), first seen at the model airplane field (Thanks to Gene Rutherford for the heads up this AM), then later at the Cottonwood Marsh pond that is visible from the main park road. A Great Horned Owl on a nest was a nice treat (email me if you want to know where this bird can be unobtrusively spotted). No super early migrants, but distant calls from a resident Virginia Rail and a juvenile Sharp Shinned Hawk were highlights at the 12 mile nature trail. [cobirds] Acorn Woodpecker Colorado Springs (El Paso)
This afternoon at about 1PM, Dan David Dowell and I converged at the site of the Acorn Woodpecker sighting. We talked to Deb, one of the homeowners (along with Mike), who happily shared pictures and stories about the bird. She said we are welcome to enjoy her feeders, and is excited about the bird. David found the bird in a deciduous tree just behind their garage, where she provided nice photo opportunity, and where we were able to share her with another neighbor. The previous directions are great, just follow Cheyenne Blvd to the Sacred Grounds coffee shop, and the bird is frequenting the area of the Grinch/Santa house (1804-1810 Willow Cir). Once the Grinch is gone, just look for a red and white For Sale by Owner sign that's perched in the corner of the yard. There is street parking, but it's also for the coffee shop, so consider a nice cup of coffee or tea in appreciation! Also, two resident Border collies are occasionally out, but friendly. Joe and Cobirders, Dan Brooke had the Royal Tern (as well as a Forster's Tern and a Franklin's Gull) at (Sand)Barr Lake this afternoon at about 1:45 PM. He was on the usual spit near the north end, and was flushed by about 10 Canada geese after about 10 minutes. We are on day 8 of a male Calliope Hummingbird in our Aurora yard, the first we've seen in about 15 years here. Of course, it's been an odd summer, about 3 days after the High Park fire started, a Mountain Chickadee showed up and fed a fledgling suet (nonstop) for about a week (we've never seen this species in the summer), and we've had 2 male Lesser Goldfinches that came 2 days after the Waldo Canyon fire blew into the inferno that came into the Co Springs foothills, and they are only our second record in 15 years. One way to honor Candace Stuart, who was truly a gift to the birding community, would be to consider making a contribution to WILD B.I.R.D., as Debbie Strimple continues the tireless work started by Catherine Birdie Hurlbutt, caring for wild birds in the urban interface. [cobirds] Vireos at Chatfield (Jefferson County) continued
To continue Beth Partin's observation, we arrived at Chatfield at about 1:15 and took up watch. We heard the Plumbeous vireo sing in the trees before the bare spot when we were on the way to the nest site, but never definitely heard or saw the Yellow-throated. We also watched the Western Wood-Pewee raid the cup shaped nest, without interruption by any other bird, and take nesting material to its own nest nearby, settling in for a few moments after each effort. In the area, in addition to the Pewee, we found nesting Least Flycatcher, House Wren and Broad-tailed Hummingbird. At about 2:45, we heard the Plumbeous sing in trees fairly to the west of the nest site. Sorry about the oddity of our Black-chinned sparrow posting while in Grand Junction earlier this week. Somehow it refused to go through on this site, but can be read directly on the www.cfo-link.org. [cobirds] Black-chinned Sparrows feeding fledgling, NT Canyon, CO Nat'l Mnmt, Mesa Cty
Today, Dan and I were in Colorado National Monument(Mesa County) seeking out west slope specialties, and after checking out the Devil's Kitchen area we decided to try our luck in No Thoroughfare Canyon. We were following a singing Gray Vireo up the trail when we were stopped by an unfamiliar buzzing sound, which was associated with some barely visible birdsthat were low in ajuniper. When the birds popped up, we had two adult Black-Chinned Sparrows feeding a begging fledgling! After some frantic calls to front range birders (thanks Steve Mlodinov for Larry Arnold's phone number), we actually were able to use a smarter-than-me phone for internet access, and googled the Grand Valley Audubon Soc. After so poking around on line, I called Nic Korte (new president of the group) who dropped what he was doing and came to see the birds. I wanted someone over in this part of the state to have a good location for the birds, even if it's only for today... We (Dan) took lots of photos, so we will be sending documentation to the Records Committee, and to eBird. If you've seen any of these sparrows this spring, note Larry Arnold's plea. I think they definitely were seen on a spring count over here, but am not sure what their status has been since, until today. The birds were first seen about 0.4 mi up the No Thoroughfare trail, where a large Butte begins on the left, and ranged up to a bend in the trail where rough black Precambrian rock meets the trail bed. This is before 0.5 mile on the trail, where there is an alleged water hole. We didn't go that far. The fledgling is flying short distances after the parents, so who knows where they'll be tomorrow. They were, at times, right on the trail's edge, and pretty unperturbed by our presence (for about an hour and a half) and passing (oblivious) hikers. Occasionally, we would see the male at the top of a pinyon, where he would softly sing his "bouncing ball" song. Some fun! [cobirds] White-faced Ibis at Cherry Creek State Park, Arapahoe County
At about 1PM today there was a flock of about 10 White-faced Ibis in the (flooded) Cottonwood Marsh Wetlands area. Visible from the Belleview Ave side, or by parking at the Cottonwood Marsh trailhead and walking in toward the west side. Also a large (about 200 birds) mixed flock of swallows over the reservoir near the marina, battling the fierce winds. We tallied Barn, Tree and Cliff Swallows. [cobirds] Cherry Creek State Park
We stopped by Cherry Creek State Park (Arapahoe County) this afternoon. Not a lot of gull diversity (one juvenile Thayer's and 2 adult Herring gulls among a large number of Ring bills), but we did see our first of season single American White Pelican (looking ready for spring) as well as a lone Double Crested Cormorant. [cobirds] No roadrunner on dinosaur ridge (Jefferson county) today
In overcast skies with cool temperatures today, about 17 birders had a no-show of the Greater Roadrunner . I think that Joe Roller might agree that 1. Cold, 2. Wind, 3. Snow, and 4. Overcast conditions may all be suboptimal for seeing this bird. So, if you are on the lookout, consider warmer sunny days as perhaps your best option. By the way, on the trip yesterday, the bird was not perturbed by buses on the road, bikers with loose dogs on the trail, runners, hikers, or odd humans with binoculars and cameras. [cobirds] Common Loon at Chatfield
After being on Joe Roller's excellent roadrunner adventure, we went to Chatfield SP, where the wind was calm, the water was glassy smooth, and a basic plumaged Common Loon was foraging near the northeast corner of the lake, closer to the dam, as viewed from the handicapped fisherman's platform. [cobirds] Pueblo Rusty Blackbird, Fountain Creek Harris's Sparrow
Hi Cobirders, This morning, after walking to the far end of the Valco Pond complex in Pueblo, we had a drop in visit from the Rusty Blackbird originally reported by Steve Mlodinow on January 1. No luck with the Swamp Sparrow. At about 12:30, we stopped by the nature center at Fountain Creek in El Paso county, where we added some seed to the platform (which helps on the days that the visitor center is closed, Sunday through Tuesday). We were rewarded with very nice looks at the adult Harris's sparrow, scratching under the bushes and around the feeder in the company of other bird, but did not see the White Throated Sparrow. Things to consider after you've (hopefully) seen one or more Snowy Owls at Barr Lake. [cobirds] Birding Sedgwick and Phillips counties today (added Common Redpoll)
To all, After finally seeing the Common Ground-Dove at the reported site in Sedgwick County near Julesberg, we decided to try to follow some of the birds that Nick Moore and his group reported on yesterday. At the Lion's Club pond just east of Holyoke off of Highway 6, we looked for, but did not find, the Rusty Blackbird. But as a nice surprise, we did find two COMMON REDPOLL working in the same ditch, just on the south side of the pond. Skipped the Holyoke cemetery, then went to the Haxtun Sewage Ponds, where the previously reported three Greater White Fronted Geese, one Snow Goose, and many Cackling Geese intermingled with Canada Geese, Mallards, and Canvasbacks. Off to Haxtun City Park, where mixed in with enough Robins to make Alfred Hitchcock nervous, the Northern Parula and Wood Thrush were able to be re-found in the crowd. Thanks to the couple from Glenwood who made sure we knew that the Thrush was still lurking about! [cobirds] Juvenile Sabine's Gull Cherry Creek State Park, Arapahoe County
This morning at about 9:30 we spotted a juvenile Sabine's Gull. We were in the lot just above the East Boat Ramp, it was (of course) on the opposite side of the reservoir. Later in the morning it was flying in an area where it would probably be visible from the Lake Loop. How any bird is tolerating the boat traffic out there is beyond me! [cobirds] Least Bittern at Holcim Marsh, Fremont County
This morning between about 8:30 and 10AM, 4 birders (Dan Brooke, Jan Swarm, Bill Maynard and I) saw the female Least Bittern make 4-5 trips across the marsh. Many thanks to Bill, who got us in the right location on the south shore to see the bird (if you go, walk about halfway down the south side of the marsh to the largest open area of water that's near the shore, but rimmed by reeds). At one point she was harassed by an Eastern Kingbird, which drove her into the marsh. We were at the Dallas Creek day area at Ridgway State Park this morning at about 11A when 2 Caspian Terns spent some time cruising over that part of the lake, then headed north. We did not relocate them at the north end, but there are lots of areas in the north part where the reservoir is hard to view. Also, Rufous Hummingbirds in Ouray yesterday and today, only 1 Black Swift on nest was seen in Box Canyon. Both Black-chinned sparrows were singing close to where Chip Clouse had reported the farthest one a few days ago, at about 400m up the No Thoroughfare trail, past it's confluence with the Devil's Kitchen trailhead. Many other usual Mesa county species were also in attendance, including Gray Vireo, Gambel's Quail, Ash-throated Flycatcher, numerous Black-throated sparrows, Pinyon Jays, Common Ravens (with young), etc. Cheryl Teuton Aurora (but currently in Grand Junction) -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Colorado Birds group. [cobirds] Continuing birds at Cherry Creek SP this afternoon
Not as great of numbers, but continuing variety of shorebirds this afternoon at Cherry Creek. At the observation deck area off of the prairie loop, there were still Semipalmated Plovers, Western and Semipalmated sandpipers, a Sanderling, a large number of Wilson's phalaropes, Avocets, Willets, Marbled Godwits, both yellowlegs, and Long-billed Dowitchers. The Caspian tern was on the spit at the marina at about 6PM, keeping company with gulls, Pelicans, Double crested corms and the ongoing Neotropical Corm, but when we were leaving at about 7PM, a last look in the Southeast corner showed that the tern had popped up with the gathering gulls there. [cobirds] Ongoing Three-toed Woodpecker Douglas County, Two Eastern Phoebes at Chatfield
This morning, the spit at Cherry Creek Marina held 3 Willet, 6 Marbled Godwit, 14 American Avocet and an alternate plumaged Spotted Sandpiper was bumping around in the corner there. We went to the spot well described by Bob Brown and others on highway 67, 0.3 miles from Rampart Range road in the fog and mist, parked in the pull out adjacent to the 2 sectioned piece of wood fence, and Dan opened the car door next to the woods only to have a female American Three-toed WP on the tree beside us. Fastest three-toed woodpecker in the west! As we enjoyed her hard labor, a noisy male Hairy WP came onto the other side of the same tree, offering a nice side by side comparison. From there we went to Chatfield, where as we passed by the little parking area for fisherman that is just after the right turn to go to Plum Creek Delta, a large flock of Yellow Rumped Warblers were working in the trees, going toward the edge of the reservoir. Embedded with them were two Eastern Phoebes and a Chipping Sparrow. The whole thing got blown up by a Cooper's Hawk, but the group was reforming in the same area when we left around 1:15PM. The bird was actively feeding beyond the end of the dock, generally looking in the direction of the dam tower. [cobirds] Neotropical Cormorant remains at Cherry Creek
As of 4:30 PM on the 14th, we were able to re-find the juvenile neotropical cormorant at the marina at Cherry Creek State Park. No Dunlin or peeps were seen at the observation deck in the prairie loop, although many American Avocet were present. Earlier in the afternoon at the central garden area of Garden of the Gods in Colorado Springs, we watched a Prairie Falcon pair chase a migrating Osprey, and a Raven bomb a Broad Winged Hawk, and some White Throated Swifts and a Cooper's Hawk also flew over in the heavy winds present at about 1:30 PM. [cobirds] Common Loon Cherry Creek State Park
At 9AM, a Common Loon in breeding plumage was easily visible from the Cottonwood Marsh Observation area (on the Prairie Loop). It was working back toward the south end of the reservoir (closer to the area of the east boat ramp) by the time we left it at about 9:30. All of the other birds reported by Bob Andrews et al were also able to found with some number changes and some movement on their parts. To summarize: South end of reservoir: Semipalmated plover, hanging out with some killdeer. The Clark's grebe could be scoped closer to the center of the reservoir from here, westerns appear to have fled the coop. Cottonwood Creek Observation Area: Avocet continues, one Greater Yellowlegs popped in while we were there. Marina spit and beyond: Lesser Black Backed Gull on spit with many other raucous gulls. Two Franklin's gulls were in a group that was loosely aggregated in the water near the tower. [cobirds] Yellow-bellied Sapsucker Grandview Cemetery
We were able to find the adult male sapsucker of Dave Leatherman's postings in the pine trees and adjacent deciduous trees in the SW corner at Grandview Cemetery in Larimer County, just east of the portapotty. He was working in the vicinity of a female Downy WP and a creeper at about 11AM. Advice for the weekends - beware of golfers! They periodically have to jump the fence in pursuit of errant balls (one fellow then went on to whack the ball he'd just retrieved into a nearby tree!). Near the lower Latham outlet area, a large pond on the south side of CR48 held a pair of Greater White-fronted geese in addition to about a thousand white cheeked geese. A pair of Sandhill Cranes stalked in the background. Cheryl Teuton Aurora -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Colorado Birds group. We saw the female Long Tailed Duck this morning at W Gravel Lakes, as did a large birding group which was also there. At about 11:00 this morning, the dipper was in the more active water between the I76 bridges and Lowell Ave. It was harrassed by a low flying Kingfisher, and disappeared from view for about 20 minutes. The dipper then reappeared, and was last seen working in the rocky part of the stream just below the dam/spillway which is just to the east of Lowell. He moved over into a tree just beside the Sandbeach Lake Trailhead (between the parking lot and the little kiosk on the trail. He was intently staring at the area near a woodpile just off of the trail, and was not perturbed by hikers walking just below him.
