[Cooker] Tuxkart Gown's Bow AI fixed
Hi, I spent almost all day yesterday fixing data/gownsbow.drv so that the AIs actually drive the track (rather than getting stuck on a wall). I've uploaded a package with the patch to ftp.linux-mandrake.com/incoming I've attached an image to this message that gives a visual look at the patch, the gray is the old and the red the new. I created it by running: awk -F, '{print $1\t$2}' on the gownsbow.drv files, and using the output as dataset files for Gtkgraph. I've submitted this patch to the author, hopefully he'll include it in the next version. I'll let you know if he says anything. gownsbow.png Description: PNG image
Re: [Cooker] TV-out config tool
yes, it write an Xfree config file for tv-out support. In fact, there are two parts : - a tv-out configure tool (card (ATI, Nividia, Matrox G400?, Voodoo3 ?), format (PAL, NTSC)). - a tv-out switch tool (select if a TV will be connected next time the PC will be (re)started). All are writen in Perl with Mdk's library interactive and can be included in MCC. The switch tool could be used in text mode too. Atitvout don't work directly with xfree and some features don't work on my ATI Rage 128 and perhaps Radeon and it need to start in text mode for switching. I have writen a switching tool that use atitvout but the new version is very easier to use and is more stable ! I prefer the new one ! [Cooker] failed compile of evolution 1.0.5-3mdk
I tried to compile evolution-1.0.5-3mdk.src.rpm from cooker... I was surprised that it has a build dependancy on XFree86-Xvfb. [Cooker] XPat2 Segfaults QCad
Hi On the latest cooker packages (XPat2-1.07-9mdk) XPat2 segfaults when you try to click on a card. Also it is built with qt2 (so you need the old libqt2 packages which arent on the mirrors any more, but I still have them installed) - can it be rebuilt with qt3? QCad needs updating too, it is built with GCC 2.96 still and qt2, so will not work without the aformentioned qt2 libs Cheers cris.

[Cooker] bug in php 4.0.6 about semaphores
Semaphores isn't released automatically. See http://bugs.php.net/bug.php?id=13490 This will cause some php applications to be unusable, especially, the applications that use the sem_acquire command, for example, horde/IMP ( http://www.horde.org/imp/ ). This bug doesn't occur in php 4.0.4 and php 4.1.x. As seen in, http://www.mandrakelinux.com/en/security/2002/MDKSA-2002-017.php?dis=8.0 , php in many Mandrake releases has been updated to 4.0.6, which has this bug. So, will Mandrake or Redhat plan to fix this bug by updating those old releases by php 4.1.x ? I have tried to put php 4.1.2 (from Mandrake 8.2) into my Mandrake 8.1 box, but there are many conflict dependencies that I can't resolve.

and I had to change the name of the libs (wasn't too happy with that). %files -n libsnmp%{major} %defattr(-,root,root,-) %{_libdir}/*-*.so Beware that I didn't test the package... Your %configure changes makes it compile, but now there's no tcp_wrappers or openssl support anymore. This is the case for the ucd-snmp package in Cooker too. The package still Requires openssl, due to the rediculous amount of Requires in the package (rpm should handle this for the non -devel packages, but it was put in manually in the package. Maybe I should have asked why my package compiles just fine on ML8.2 but not on Cooker... I get this error: checking for tcpd.h... no configure: error: Asked to use libwrap but I couldn't find tcpd.h. Same here... When you run configure with --with-libwrap=%{_prefix} then it isn't found... and the %configure hangs... Same goes for ssl. Time to file a bug report?
[Cooker] Bug list....
Hello, I recently moved up to a fully cooker environment to get some of the recent updates (KDE 3.0.1, gcc 3.1.1, et al) Anyway very nice so far, but with the good comes a few bug reports... KDE stuff first: 1) KDM: I've noticed a slight security problem with kdm, or rather in kdm_greet, I think. When I set it (kdm) to not show users, it works fine as long as I log in to and out of the root account only. However, when I use my perssonal account then log out again, the users are shown again (including root.) 2) Kpersonalizer: I know that this has been reported on-list before, however, I may have it tracked down. I appears that kpersonalizer seems to be ignoring the /usr/share/config/kpersonalizerrc all together. Additionally, kpersonalizer.cpp seems to be re-writing the ~/.kde/share/config/kpersonalizerrc every time (and promptly ignores it if you're root). 3) Ksplash/ML: I can add new themes but, I can't seem to be able to configure any of them for my personal tastes. Additionally, the rpm doesn't put entries into the new style menu, only the original KDE menu. 4) KOffice: I installed using the isos on the ftp.sunet.se mirror and noticed that koffice is not on the disc. Additionally, at that time it was in contrib not in main, whereas the i18L stuff for it WAS in main. I finally got it and installed it. It's rpm too does not create entries in the other menus, only the KDE original. 5) the KDE rpms: this is more of a question than a bug report: why is it that the srpms are mark not to build if you have their counterparts installed already? This makes it difficult to try and fix things in the code and then rebuild the package. I was snooping around in the kdebase-3.0.1 code to see if I could fix the bugs myself, but it won't let me build the package since I have kdebase-3.0.1 installed already. This shouldn't matter since I'm doing this as a user not as root. Also I noticed a few switches in the spec file that I don't know how to call at build. The way I learned rpm was just to do a: rpm -ba package.spec and that would build it. With these specs, I don't know how best to build them since they have no documentation about how they are to be built. 6) KDE and other DE's as a whole: Why are we putting them in the /usr heirarchy? KDE and GNOME should be located in /opt/DE name as per LSB and FHS recommendation. 90% of the distributions put them there, why don't we? If it's only to remain RH compatible, let's cut the crap. Mandrake isn't close to being RedHat-compatible nor is Red Hat a Mandrake-compatible distro. Mandrake may be based on Red Hat historically, but it is not compatible anymore. This also allows the Mandrake KDE developement team to add different versions of these DEs without requiring MAJOR changes to the /usr filesystem nor major hacks to the build process. Please let's make them compatible with majority of the GNU/Linux base, put them back into /opt. Non-KDE stuff: 1) Webmin: I use it a lot for samba administration on my network, I go to use it and lo, it won't start since it can't resolve my IP to hostname. I tried using a vanilla copy (0.980-1) from www.webmin.com with the same results. If I install an earlier vanilla version (0.970-1), it runs. 2) Mozilla v1.0.0: PSM again and Java support. but you already know about that... Like I said, over-all cooker is almost at release quality, but small things are making it not what I would classify as production material yet. -- Gary Sent from seele.gvsu.edu 1:35pm up 22:28, 3 users, load average: 0.05, 0.19, 0.68 Mandrake Linux release 8.3 (Cooker) for i586 = Founder GVLUG. I would have to say that it's far closer to release quality than 8.2 was. Cooker has been rockin' lately. The only show-stoppers I know of are PSM/Java in Mozilla, disappearing mouse, and broken Xinerama in XFree. The Mozilla Java works if you use Ranger's rpms, and you can always retrograde XFree to 4.1 from Mdk81. OOo has horrid fonts, but again that is fixed with Ranger's OOo and PLF's freetype (or rebuild your own freetype --with plf). KDE is still making ~/.kde[3]? directories, which are unnecessary, but not troublesome. The version of LICQ in cooker is terminally broken, and nobody has built any V8 rpms. Media playing is, er, challenged in Mandrake, but then there's the wonderful world of PLF to meet those needs. And FINALLY cooker has a no-excuses, fully-functioning wine. BTW the redirect is necessary to keep from screwing up tty1 on init5. So, what is it that mousedrake is doing to make the mouse work? not much. it accesses /dev/psaux and a few other stuff. You can reproduce it with: % perl -I/usr/lib/libDrakX -Mdetect_devices -e 'detect_devices::hasMousePS2(psaux)' It may also tell the X server to change the protocol, but it shouldn't happen in that case. also try disabling gpm?

Hi, I noticed my clock was running 6 hours of or something like that. The whole variable isn't used at all. I solved the issue by ( and don't ask me how I found it, I still don't remember ) making a symlink /etc/localtime - /usr/share/zoneinfo/Europe/Amsterdam I know that there is supposed to be a configuration app but I don't know how theses things work and I prefer to edit my system with vi instead of with drakconf if you don't mind. I am a bit clumsy with the mouse when it comes to configuring. Now let me show you the OpenBSD version of the config files; all in one file: http://www.openbsd.org/cgi-bin/cvsweb/~checkout~/src/etc/rc.conf?rev=1.74content-type=text/plain They all have a simple comment on all settings. Well, on my iBook2-500 (384MB) Mandrake 8.2 is about 10 times as fast doing most operations compared to MacOSX 1.1.5. Also MacOSX is so damn unstable it can hardly be used. I have at least one application crasch every day I run it, and I hate having to reboot after doing certain upgrades. MacOSX really sucks - let's see if Apple can release something usable within a few years maybe. Interesting, there must be something terribly wrong with mandrake on my Dual G4 then. It often takes up to 10 seconds to open a new window up from the item in the right mouse click menu. I fresh installed and only installed the packages on the left side of the mandrake package installer..that is the workstation packages (not games tho or scientific), i didn't install any of the server packages. Often the Mandrake control center just hangs an becomes unresponsive. BTW what is the command to force quit an app? Control,Alt, Delete seems to force quit the window manager an then logs me out. Sometimes other apps just hang an the system becomes unresponsive. I use Gnome, could this be the place where the problems stem from? I don't think Linux it self has crashed. I do not have lot of experienc of MDK 8.2 PPC or OSX yet, but I think that there are a lot more problems with dual processor support in mdk 8.2 than in OSX or single processor. I have experimented with both OSX and MDK. I have not had any problems with OSX. My best experiences with MDK and dual processor support were with 8.2 B when I compiled kernel 2.4.18(I think) myself. Then everything seemed to work all right. With ready compiled kernels I had a lot of problems. Now with latest kernel versions I have not had time to try yet. t Is it just me having a miserable time with it or is this a standard t life in Linux on PPC? As Obi-Wan said, it all depends on your point of view. To me OSX is miserable unusable, while Linux is perfect. And in the spririt of free software - if you don't like something - just dig in and fix it... :-) Best regards, Henrik While i agree OS X is far from perfect, for a first time user experience it's significantly smoother to install an start using without any hicupps. at least in my experience. Under Linux, the first 2 apps i tryed to configure (mandrake center, evolution mail) either hung an became unresponsive, or threw up an error at launch time. Thats not a very good start. When i decided to uninstall Mozilla from the mandrake software uninstaller i was forced to log out and the machine wouldn't let me log in resulting in a re-installation. Maybe im just very unlucky an my hardware is not suitable for mandrake linux but on the whole i get the feeling that Linux is no better than windows. It just seems to be unpredictable an does many freaky things. I Shall investigate Linux under AMD hardware, perhaps things are a little smoother and easier access to the newest versions of software. I think that important factors between OSX and Linux is, that linux is significally lighter at least if you do not need graphical interface all the time. With OSX I think that it is not possible to shut down graphical part and the graphics demands more resources. Other fact is to what os you can find easier the software you want to work with. These are just my opinions. Regards, Arto I have totally become very much attached to the Galeon web browser, altho the version with 8.2 mandrakeppc is very old and buggy i assume the newer version is much more mature. But the newer versions seems unlikely to work on PPC due to it's dependence on Mozilla 1.0. Hopefully on the x86 side things are rosier. I like the UI customization in Gnome using Sawfish but i was curious as to if it is possible to customize it further? Im a long time mac user an find it unsettling to see the cancel button on the far right corner of dialogs. I'd like to be able to swap the buttons around so the ok button is on the far right. Additionally, i'd like some global way of assigning specific key commands to every app system wide.. eg Command+Q for quit. I notice some apps use alt+f4 while others use control+q and others respond to nothing. Are these things possible to anyones knowledge? Does anyone think Gnome 2.0 will be a significant improvement on the version shipped with 8.2 Mandrake PPC?
