[Cooker] Differences between OpenPBS and ScalablePBS.
In my opinion, this should be in the ScalabePBS package because in the current packages the description is exactly the same: The Scalable OpenPBS version incorporates scalability, fault tolerance, and feature extension patches provided by NCSA, OSC, Sandia, PNNL, U of Buffalo, and other leading edge HPC centers. This version is based upon OpenPBS version 2.3.12 and may be freely redistributed.

[Cooker] OpenPBS / ScalablePBS?
Hi! We use OpenPBS in a cluster with Mandrake 9.0. I was going to update to 9.2, but I have found that: - OpenPBS depends on old tcl, tk and elf libraries. - There are ScalablePBS packages that don't have these problems, but: * What is ScalablePBS? The web page is still the same... * Does substitute OpenPBS? Anyway, OpenPBS should be recompiled against tcl, tk and elf libraries present in 9.2 or dropped from 9.2 contribs. Regards.

[Cooker] 9.2 problems with Dell Laptop c640
Hi, I have few of hardware related problems with a dell latitude c640 1. I use a TEAC CD224E DVD drive with this. I can see that drive is properly recognized while booting. But I don't have a /dev/dvd created. ( dmesg is attached.) 2. I do have a PCTEL 2304WT v.92 modem. I can't see 9.2 recognizing this as valid modem. I'm trying to set it up as per http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/pctel-linux/. This appears to be little old. Is this correct? 3. As reported earlier, I have disabled ACPI due to system lock up. I can't suspend the system now which was possible with Mandrake 9.1. If anybody is interested in helping me debugging the problem, I can provide sufficient information. thanks in advance, --jaimon

Yes, I can unplug the power cable from my laptop now. But only irritant is, my battery monitor no longer work. I can live with this for the moment. ANother problem I face is with pmsuspend. I could suspend my machine with Mand9.1 by running from a console screen. I can't do that anymore. I used pmsuspend2 and it copied entire image to disk. When I reboot 75% of time system get locked. ( If I had been running X). I'm yet to debug more into this. --jaimon On Wed, 2003-10-22 at 20:18, Buchan Milne wrote: > -BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- > Hash: SHA1 > > Jaimon Jose wrote: > > Thanks. Looks like there is a problem with this client ( or my python binaries). Once I break the downaload, I get an error when I restart btdownloadgui. After existing file checking, it comes out with an error "symbol fcntl" not found. Its little confusing since fcntl is a libc symbol. No, It's not *after* installation, it's *during* installation. Once you have selected the packages and these start to being installed, wait until glibc package is installed, then switch to the console (ALT+F2) and delete the directory. Keep into account that /lib/i686 will be wherever your root partition is mounted in the installation process (somewhere in /tmp I think).
Re: [Cooker] VIA EPIA 800 C3 processor
It seems that the problem is that glibc package from Mandrake 9.0 has some libraries optimized for i686 (with the CMOV instruction) in the directory /lib/i686 and that the Via C3 cpu (which has not that instruction) is detected as i686. So, the solution is to delete that directory as soon as possible, when the glibc package is installed, to avoid programs use those libraries. I can't test this until saturday, so if anybody else can test it (cc. to my e-mail address please). Regards.

[Cooker] XFdrake i810 suggestion
On every Mandrake version since I can remember, when using X w/ 3d accel I all-ways have had to add Option "XaaNoPixmapCache" in the device section. If I don't add that there is pixel corruption. I know you guys gotta know about this right? I've installed on many motherboards with integrated intel video and all-ways have had the same problem. Kinda like the certain Sis chipset that you have add the SWCursor option to. Will it be to difficult to have XFdrake do this auto-magically?
[Cooker] Failed Upgrade attempt report (from 8.2)
Everything was going find until "Please wait finding packages to upgrade" and then it hung there, further investigation shows no installer or kernel related error messages. Top showed runinstaller2 using all the cpu cycles and slowly gobbling up all available memory and swap space. I eventually ended task on the process and the install ended there. I rebooted back to my original desktop without any problems. Of other interest there were 4 instances of kreiserfsd, 3 of them zombies, i dunno if that's normal or not. I was looking for the install log to attach this email, but couldn't find it.

I had the same problem rebuilding the latest kdebase (cooker) for Mandrake 8.2. The problem was with autoconf 2.5. Use the older autoconf with "export WANT_AUTOCONF_2_5=0". Regards.
[Cooker] Installation report
I installed it on two different systems. both had very similar hardware. Intel motherboard with / integrated intel chipset for video and sound. Both pc's acted the same unless otherwise noted. Installation There was a ncurses style message, about a alternate boot message, is this just cause it's cooker and it's something I don't know about, or is the new norm? Title "9.0 Beta 1 - Installation" picture is crook-et, I'm sure you guys did this on purpose. At "Choose installation class", I changed themes and received the following error "An error occurred, theme_changed..propagated", the theme did switch, and re-switching back and forth produced no errors. It appears that the error appears on some dialogs but not others though out the installation if you try to switch things. Package Group Selection, selections are not aligned vertically. During the package installation it refers to 8.2 everywhere, instead of 9.0. First Time Wizard (root & user) First Time Wizard (Gnome does not have a screen shot) Suggestion for pop box setup wizard, replace Login: with User Account Login:, or something other than just the word login, I think it could confuse windoze users. Konquerer popped up with the Mandrake expert screen, I responded no thanks, then it looked like it was to ask me a question when a segfault occurred in Konqueror 0x412975e9 in wait4 () from /lib/i686/libc.so.6 0x41313340 in sys_sigbbrev () from /lib/i686/libc.so.6 0x410bea73 in waitpid () from /lib/i686/libpthread.so.0 0x40837785 in KCrash::defaultCrashHandler(int) (sig=11) at kcrash.cpp:224 I logged off, and then received the following error message "INIT: Id "x" respawning to fast: disabled for 5 minutes" further investication shows: (EE) GARTInit: AGPIOC_INFO failed (Invalid argument) (EE) I810(0): AGP GART support is not available. Make sure your kernel has agpgart support or that the agpgart kernel module is loaded. (EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration. I made no X changes, lsmod showed the agpgart module loaded, I rebooted, it came back up. (The second pc came up to a ncurses display telling there was trouble with X, nice touch, however I wonder why the first pc didn't do this?) Kpersonalizer comes up every time Koffice Workspace crashed with Kpresenter open, same backtrace as Konqueror Where's openoffice? File associations rpm is not associated in Nautilus The default font size in Gnome appears to be smaller than Kde appear to be different sizes, is this something that can be worked on? I want to do more testing, I wanted to test different types of mime types in Gnome and Kde, but I don't wanna waste my time either. So if there's something in particular you guys want me to test let me know. I also wanted to switch out hardware (ps/2 mouse switched with usb), test Alcatel modem, just let me know how I could help.

If the option is still there I suppose it has to work for somebody (well, may be not ;-)) I mean, I think the packager should not disable things. [Cooker] Scanner problems with mandrake 8.2
I use a Acer 3300U scanner and everything was fine with 8.2Beta 3. Configuration detects the scanner and installs it. With the released 8.2 also, configuration detects the scanner and installs. devfs finds it whenever I switch on the scanner and puts an icon on desktop. sane-find-scanner reports the same. But xsane fails to find the scanner. I'm suspecting the usb driver shipped in released version. Please find attached logs from snapscan.conf and xsane. PS: I use firmware u222v067.bin (see log file). The one shows in the conf file is result of trying out with different firmwares. Re: [Cooker] Sound card problem with mandrake-8.2
This problem is solved with 'modprob'ing sound. Thanks to Pierre Fortin for suggesting that. I have the same problem with another machine as i mentioned in the previous mail. This is a Duron system with onboard SiS controller. I get trident driver while configuring. Everything plays well( xmms, realplayer, alsaplay etc. ) but no sound. I tried removing alsa and loading trident driver alone. But it didn't help. When I recompile the kernel along with trident driver as part of kernel (instead of module), i get sound properly. So, I'm expecting some kind of conflict with modules. Is it alsa? Please find attached log files for more information. After running drakenet again, and cancelling the autodetect, I could configure the netaddresses. I've been using Mandrake 8.0 onwards in Dell latitude and know that this is supported. But after loadeing maestro driver and letting xmms using oss driver as audio pluggin, I could use audio. Thanks, --jaimon

From the XFS FAQ: " Q: Why do I see binary NULLS in some files after recovery when I unplugged the power? If it hurts don't do that! Basically this is normal behavior. XFS journals metadata updates, not data updates. After a crash you are supposed to get a consistent filesystem which looks like the state sometime shortly before the crash, NOT what the in memory image looked like the instant before the crash. Since XFS does not write data out to disk immediately unless you tell it to with fsync or an O_SYNC open (the same is true of other filesystems), you are looking at an inode which was flushed out to disk, but for which the data was never flushed to disk. You will find that the inode is not taking any disk space since all it has is a size, there are no disk blocks allocated for it yet. This same will apply to other metadata only journaling filesystems. The current linux kernel VM will write out the metadata after 1/60th of a second and the data after 30 seconds. So the possibility of losing data when unplugging the power within 30 seconds is quite large. The only way of being sure that your data will get to the disk is using fsync in the program of sync after closing the program. " There is also a thread about this in the linux-xfs mailing list. You can see it at: http://marc.theaimsgroup.com/?l=linux-xfs&m=100607082003066&w=2

Hi, I have an Acer 3300U scanner which is supported by snapscan backend from sane-1.0.6 onwards. This scanner reports type as "FlatbedScanner22", but this was not there in sane-1.0.6. However, by installing sane-1.0.6 with patch or 1.0.7, I can get my scanner working without any problem. Can we get this added/recognized by scannerdrake from next release onwards. [Cooker] X Server startup problem with Beta2
I've upgraded to Beta2 from Mandrake8.1. Upgrade was smooth untill I rebooted the machine. I was not able to start my XServer in user mode but the same was okay as root. I always get an error Authentication failed. After a little bit of plying around with strace, I realized, pam thorugh xinit is looking for a file /var/run/console/$user file. A mere presence of this file will do. Is this a known problem or am I missing something in my setup? Thanks, --jaimon
[Cooker] Problems in getting audio working with default kernel
Hi, I installed 8.2B2 and my audio stopped working. xmms or mixer doesn't report any error in accessing audio device and continue to play. But, no sound comes out. [Cooker] 8.2beta2 feedback
Hi, While installing beta2, I skipped internet connection details. But network was set up correctly. Moving forward, I chose to upgrade the available packages from mirros (I know i shouldn't have done this when I didn't setup any internet connection details.) I expected a dialogue box for internet connection details. But, to my horror, the system just stalled. I could switch to other debug and consoles but couldn't comeout. I had to hard boot the system after this. Can we fix this for the next releases. Thanks, --jaimon

[Cooker] urpmi (gurpmi?) problem
Hello all, this is my first post to the list cooker ... and is to inform about some problems I'm having with MandrakeUpdate. I'm now using Mandrake Cooker, I upgraded from mandrake 8.1 a couple of days ago. My intention was to use some packages in Cooker in my laptop running 8.1, but since MandrakeUpdate didn't work properly, I upgraded to Cooker in the hope it would solve that issue. The main problem was a coredump when doing an update, but in Cooker I'm getting the same problem too. Yesterday I also upgraded (by searching the packages in MandrakeUpdate) to urpmi-3.1-5mdk, gurpmi-3.1-5mdk and rpmdrake-1.4-6mdk. And I have now and additional problem, now it tries to download the lists with curl (I think it used wget before). curl is reporting a problem in the arguments passed and cannot download package lists. So, what's better ? to delete those packages and reinstall them manually? to edit some config file and made again wget the download tool by default ? And how about that coredump I'm getting when I do an update ? Thanks a lot, and I'm sorry for reporting so many problems in my first post to the list ... ;-) Regards, josé manuel.

[Cooker] Strange problems with lesstif in Mandrake 8.1
Lesstiff that comes with Mandrake 8.1 doesn't work well: - Sometimes variables show incorrect values within DDD. - Sometimes robot' sensors show incorrect values within Saphira (a tool to develop robot controllers). Both applications: - Use motif (or compatible) libraries. - Work well with Mandrake 8.0's lesstif. - Work well with Mandrake 8.1 if I uninstall lesstif and install openmotif (I recompiled DDD but not Saphira). [Cooker] problems with supermount and kudzu
I was trying to get supermount working by running the supermount app and letting it write to the fstab, the problem is that whenever the system is restarted i get a few extra unwanted lines appended to my fstab with kudzu as a one of it's options? each appended line is one of the drive's i got supermounted. It (fstab) generates a syntax error during init and i think it negates the supermount commands before it. If anyone can on this it will be greatly appreciated.

[Cooker] cookfire rc1
When doing port forwarding using cookfire rc1, your only given a choice for port number and internal ip range, it doesn't have a means of specifying source address to which to allow port forwarding and defaults to 0.0.0.0. A second posible issue could be we need to be able to https from a remote site, if it's possible will the source address be 0.0.0.0 as well? Is this being addressed or is it me? I work for a small microsoftie service company, they can't deal with a shell (ipchains), they work with a mouse.. Anyways i've allready contacted your sales depo about getting boxed copies of Mandrake Security.
[Cooker] Mdk8: "The remote host uses non-random IP IDs"
I ran nessus against a mdk8 box i built to run as a firewall and I got the following message.. The remote host uses non-random IP IDs, that is, it is possible to predict the next value of the ip_id field of the ip packets sent by this host. An attacker may use this feature to determine if the remote host sent a packet in reply to another request. This may be used for portscanning and other things. Solution : Contact your vendor for a patch Risk factor : Low I din't use kernel-secure-2.2 cause I wanted to learn iptables/ netfilters. Is this a security bug? Is there a patch? Should I be worried? Any kernel-secure 2.4 in the works?

[Cooker] 8.0 install reports
Very nice overall, I upgraded from ver 8b3, used iso images - After the install xinetd would not start. I had to reinstall xinetd package, /usr/sbin/xinetd file was missing when querying package, ok after that. - I selected expert mode, all package categories. After install using drakboot selecting Aurora traditional frame buffer would result in a setup with no Aurora, package Aurora-Monitor-Traditional-WsLib was not installed and after installing it, it worked fine. - Again in drakboot, if I manually inserted user root for autologin, X starts up with no apps or window manager of choice, not sure why? I just worked around it using ~/.xinetrc - fs config file did not add unscaled to some font dirs resulting in uglyfied fonts in kde, I guess cause they were not included in the official distro, ( is that a feature?) Other minor details (most probably other oss projects issues, all 8b3 issues as well) - gtv, xmms (smpeg) needs mpegs played in double size for video to display. - In gnome panel applet mixer and mini-commander - graphics don't render right (voodoo3) - Voodoo 3 h/w accel goes slow with E window manager, tested with tuxracer and others. My laptop upgrade is next (Dell Inspiron 3800) which has 7.2 Thank you for the great product, you all deserve a vacation :)

Re: [Cooker] Beta1 and beta2 installation report
El Mié 21 Mar 2001 12:33, escribiste: > it should be written: > > "To activate the mouse," > "MOVE YOUR WHEEL!" You are right, that is written, but I have checked that, as samebody said before, after moving the wheel, the motion is still erratic for a few (two or three) seconds. Here is another installation report as I promised: - After selecting packages, the installation program said that there was not enough free space in the hard disk to perform upgrading (the hard disk only had 50 Mb free). I stopped installation and I restarted Linux to uninstall some packages so upgrading could be done. But the installation process upgraded rpm databases to rpm 4, so I was unable to uninstall packages!. I had to perform a fresh install keeping homes only. This is not a usual situation, but, when it's present, the damage is very large for an inexpert user (you can fix it without carrying out a fresh installation switching to VT 2 in the installation and doing some things, for example, but not everybody knows how to do it). - I had the feeling that not all packages were present in the list of packages during installation (expert). Is this true? (maybe they were, but I navigated too fast through the installation steps). - The problem of misleading behavior with Microsoft IMPS/2 was not present with a Logitech Wheel mouse. - The problem of imposibility of changing CDs during installation was not present either. Please, note this was a fresh installation and not an upgrade as in my previous report. - I selected some packages with rpmdrake to install them, the program asked for the CD, I put the CD in, I pressed the button but nothing happened. (?!) - ppp is needed by kde-network and apmd is needed by kdeutils. I think these two dependencies must not be present because I can use kde-network and kdeutils without ppp and apmd. - After uninstalling a package with rpmdrake, it deletes the package from the list, so no problem here. It may be that this is related with the fact of being a fresh installation and not an upgrade. - You can't see kudzu screens when it detects new hardware if you use aurora. - Konqueror crashes sometimes if I perform file operations from a shell while showing the directory in konqueror. I was unable to identify the exact operations for crashing konqueror. It crashed once when I deleted the directory (rm -rf) but it didn't crash the next time. See you in next report :-)

[Cooker] Beta1 and beta2 installation report
Hello! I was going to send you a report with my experiences with beta1 when beta2 came out, so I send you a "all in one" report :-) Beta1 was an upgrade of a 7.2 system and beta2 was an upgrade of the beta1. * Problems present in beta1 and fixed (I think) in beta2: - X had ridiculous values regarding memory use in "ps". - kppp was not setuid. - openuniverse did "segmentation fault". * Problems present in beta1 and which may be (or may not be) in beta2 (I don't know due to the nature of upgrading): - squid package was unable to create squid user or group, I don't remember which one now :-( - pspell, pspell-devel, gimp-libgimp and xmms-oggvorbis are "old" packages which were not uninstalled despite the fact that I installed the "new" corresponding packages. - psacct package didn't make the files in /var/log, so I had to create them manually. * Problems present in both betas: - During installation, when it finished copying packages from the first CD, it asked for the second CD but I was unable to change the CD because it was being used for some process. BTW nice pictures during installation ;-). Which ones are going to be in the final release?. I propose penguins' renders or drawings with penguins doing surf, skying, playing football, etc. :-D - A manual entry in grub (menu.lst) for a kernel compiled by myself was deleted. - Makefile in kernel-source should have kgcc as the compiler instead of gcc (or can the kernel be safely compiled now with gcc-2.96?). - iptables-restore is unable to load a file which I have stored with iptables-save. - Aurora doesn't work with Matrox fb device (this happened with 7.2 too). - I had a Microsoft IMPS/2. If I select "generic ps/2 mouse with wheel" in installation the mouse behavior is erratic. I have to select "generic ps/2 mouse". Once installation is over, I can safely select "generic ps/2 mouse with wheel" in mousedrake, it works fine (this problem happened in 7.2 too). - rpmdrake doesn't refresh package list after uninstalling a package. - Doing "supermount enable" manually generates entries for supermount capable devices with noauto option, which I think is not desired. - All directories in /var/log except "squid" and "security" missed their execution permission for all users (including owner)! Ok, that's all for the moment. I hope it will be useful. See you in next report! ;-)

I found out after programs were unable to find libraries (in my mind, rebooting was not a option until i resolve the problem), I recreated the links manually. If I recall it did not make a backup of the existing ld.so.conf. It happened on both of my boxes (I was prepared for the second). This happened a few months ago when I had a 7.2 box and was upgrading glibc from the cooker ( i think glibc2.2.1-xxmdk) I also remember both times the glibc rpm complained about it needing ldconfig (did not mention newer version), even though it was allready installed (rpm -V ldconfig), on one box I installed the version of the 7.2 cdrom, on the other I downloaded the cooker ver. Didn't seem to make a difference though. Jose
