Re: Problem with installation on older PowerMac - No CDROM devicefound
on our power mac 722 it wanted macs3c94.o as the scci driver Original Message Follows OK. Maybe it's not the mesh driver (that is the one you tried, right?) There's at least one other Mac scsi driver on that list, but I can't think of the name of it off-hand. Do you currently have linux installed? Have you ever had it installed? What was the scsi driver in dmesg? Use that. Wish I could be more helpful--anyone else out there know what scsi driver he's supposed to use? Re: Install failure - loss of data - HELP!
Well, thanx to the miracle of Norton Utilities (FileSaver & Volume Recover) I was able to resurrect my 'Macintosh HD' - the System Folder seems less than blessed now (I get a question mark when booting) but that's easily fixed - at least my data is still present! You mentioned partitioning things myself - I think I'll try this next and see how it goes! -Brice Stew Benedict wrote: >You mean the halt about not finding the RPM list? Re: X lockups
Stew, I ran this kernel and had the same results as I had mentioned earlier using the benh kernel. No exit X problem at all, fast, runs good but no modem. Even after running the control center it says it can not open modem. During the boot process I did note some problems that seem to be only related to the lack of a System.map. Re: Install failure - loss of data - HELP!
You mean the halt about not finding the RPM list? I don't know - 1 other person mentioned that, but it's all the same ISO, so I don't understand why it works for most people, and not others. (unless you were using testboot4 - which has no RPMS) The other stop at the lack of being able to create the bootloader partition is/was intentional, as it's needed for the boot scheme. If your MacOS is wiped out now, the best thing to do is re-install MacOS and just leave free space at the end of the drive, then the installer will do the right thing. Re: kernel 2.4.4 (2.4.6)
I downloaded this kernel from penguinppc.org/~benh. I think I got all the config done right for my machine. The kernel seemed to work fine as far as the exiting X problem. I had no problems at all. The 2.4 kernel really is incredibly fast. One problem though, my damn PPP still won't work. In fact even using the control center left it saying it could not open the modem. I tried minicom and it said there was no such device as ttyS0. > The problem you are having leaving X, sounds similar to one reported by > one of the employees with a TiBook. X Success (finally!)
Okay, finally got this evil X server up and running properly with the r128 driver.. Was a couple of things. I needed the line: Option "UseFBDev" in my video card device section... If I don't have it, it crashes on startup.. Then I needed to set: DefaultColorDepth 15 In the Screen section.. At 16 all of the colors are incorrect.. Yay. No more Xpmac for me. Now if only I could get 3D accelleration working properly so I can play tuxkart :) Ian --- Ian White email: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

My situation I guess is that I don't want to repartition (again). My current partitioning looks like so:'boot' : 100MB HFS, contains yaboot System Folder'untitled' : 4GB or so, contains YDL 1.2'Macintosh HD' : 5GB or so, contains OS 9.1It seems as though I cannot simply remove 'boot' and 'untitled' to let Mandrake do with as it pleases, w/o erasing 'Macintosh HD' as well :( This is what I'd like to avoid! Sure you can.Run your YDL install disk and using their disk partitioning tool, justdelete the partitions you don't want.Or do it MacOS with pdisk.I did that 50 times in the past 2 weeks :-\Jeff -- WebProjkt, Inc. Re: FYI
I understand your desire not to repartiion. You may be able to get away with manually taking out the untitled partition and creating a bootstrap, root, swap, and /usr or /home and then proceed with the install. If I understand your setup correctly, MacOS is as the end of the drive, so I would not use the installer partitioning tool to do this but do it either from YDL, the rescue image or MacOS. If you need assistance in doing this - holler, either on the list or directly. I'm on ICQ 18063833 if you want to go at it interactively. Re: Problem with installation on older PowerMac - No CDROM devicefound
OK. Jeff On Tue, 26 Jun 2001, Robert Zelnik wrote: > I tried it. I tried it. It wrote: Kernel panic: Exception in kernel pc c015ea2c signal 4 Rebooting in 180 seconds robert jeff wrote: > > You'll see another dialog box appear, which will have a list of > devices. Re: FYI
You can boot the 1st ISO from Open Firmware: boot cd:2,\\:tbxi or boot cd:2,\\yaboot The technique used in testboot4 will be applied in the next Beta. I know it seems a hassle to insist on that bootstrap, but if it's not there, the whole thing falls apart - you'll have a nicely installed system and no way to boot it. In the updates, I've replaced that halt with a warning, but if the user proceeds and does not heed the warning and does not create the bootstrap themselves, again you'll be stuck. (this applies to "NewWorld" machines - "OldWorld" machines bypass the bootstrap setup - you'll need to setup BootX on the MacOS side. All the installer really wants to see is some Apple_Free space at the end of the drive to create the bootstrap. FYI
I went and grabbed the ISOs for Mandrake PPC and found that on my Summer 2000 iMac DV (slot loading), the boot didn't work. I grabbed the testboot4.iso and the boot worked there - but I wasn't able to complete the install because DiskDrake seemed to be having a conniption fit that I didn't have a 1MB bootstrap partition (at least that's what the message says). I have YDL 1.2 installed currently, alongside MacOS9.1 - and they're both running pretty happily, so I was a bit surprised that I couldn't simply install Mandrake over YDL. I'll look into the partitioning scheme that you put down in the beta install guide and see if I can comply (w/o wiping out my OS 9.1 partition!) Sincerely, Brice Ruth -- WebProjkt, Inc. Re: X lockups
Took a look at System.map - seems those messages are coming from: c00a8fc4 t put_cmd640_reg_pci1 c00a9044 t get_cmd640_reg_pci1 c00a90c8 t put_cmd640_reg_pci2 c00a9158 t get_cmd640_reg_pci2 c00a91e4 t put_cmd640_reg_vlb c00a9260 t get_cmd640_reg_vlb The help on cmd640 mentions it's a common, buggy implementation on x86 motherboards - probably safe to drop it. I'll throw another kernel up - ftp://ftp.mandrakesoft.com/pub/sbenedict/vmlinux-no640 c0005840 T synchronize_irq c0005874 T __global_cli c0005a78 T __global_sti c0005af0 T __global_save_flags This looks to be part of the IRQ implementation on PPC: arch/ppc/kernel.irq.c - don't think we'll be losing this ;^) The SMP is intentional, but not for the RPM kernel. In 2.2, I couldn't boot an SMP kernel on a non-SMP machine, with this one it seems I can, and I'm considering using this kernel in the next iteration of the installer, so both type of machines can use it, and maybe we can get more machines running the graphical install, if I can get the Xpmac speed to pick up a bit. The AGP vs. PCI is probably due to switching to BenH's drivers. Is your actual card AGP or PCI? Any feedback from the folks with the X lockup problem?
