Bug#386160: firefox: default searchplugins: not international and uninstallable by regular users
Package: firefox Version: 1.5.dfsg+1.5.0.4-1 Severity: normal There are following system-wide searchplugins installed in /usr/share/firefox/searchplugins: amazondotcom.src answers.src creativecommons.src debsearch.src eBay.src google.src wikipedia.src yahoo.src Some of these plugins are not suitable for international distribution and are useless for many non-american users. In particular: * amazondotcom - promotes an online shop, specializing in U.S. book titles in English and Spanish language; limited usefulness for people outside of the U.S.; * answers - service oriented on English-speaking audience only; * creativecommons.org - produces yahoo CC-search results in English language. * ebay - promotes commercial service with limited geographical availability * wikipedia - searches en.wikipedia.org only, does not search for anything in non-English sections of the Wikipedia. These plugins are forced for *all* users of the firefox, without respect of their localization settings, and they stay always on the top of the list of search plugins. In addition, regular users cannot uninstall these search plugins from their firefox, as they are not in their $HOME. Any custom search plugins, installed by regular users, appear below these forced plugins. Most of these plugins are not suitable for the firefox package and should be part of some firefox-locale-[a-z][a-z] packages. My personal opinion is that google, yahoo and debsearch are the only three search plugins which may stay in /usr/share/firefox/searchplugins. Debsearch is a vital part of the Debian project, Google and Yahoo! are the leading search engines with a good support of international users. About wikipedia and creativecommons I am not sure. These plugins produce search results in English language, but the projects are quite international. Probably, for wikipedia a search plugin which searches Google with site:wikipedia.org woulde be a nice substitution. -- System Information: Debian Release: testing/unstable APT prefers testing APT policy: (900, 'testing'), (800, 'stable'), (700, 'unstable') Architecture: i386 (i686) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Kernel: Linux 2.6.16.3 Locale: LANG=ru_RU.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=ru_RU.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Versions of packages firefox depends on: ii debianutils 2.17 Miscellaneous utilities specific t ii fontconfig2.3.2-7generic font configuration library ii libatk1.0-0 1.12.1-1 The ATK accessibility toolkit ii libc6 2.3.6-15 GNU C Library: Shared libraries ii libcairo2 1.2.2-1The Cairo 2D vector graphics libra ii libfontconfig12.3.2-7generic font configuration library ii libfreetype6 2.2.1-2FreeType 2 font engine, shared lib ii libgcc1 1:4.1.1-5 GCC support library ii libglib2.0-0 2.10.3-3 The GLib library of C routines ii libgtk2.0-0 2.8.18-1 The GTK+ graphical user interface ii libidl0 0.8.6-1library for parsing CORBA IDL file ii libjpeg62 6b-13 The Independent JPEG Group's JPEG ii libpango1.0-0 1.12.3-1+b1Layout and rendering of internatio ii libpng12-01.2.8rel-5.2 PNG library - runtime ii libstdc++64.1.1-5The GNU Standard C++ Library v3 ii libx11-6 2:1.0.0-8 X11 client-side library ii libxcursor1 1.1.5.2-5 X cursor management library ii libxext6 1:1.0.0-4 X11 miscellaneous extension librar ii libxfixes31:3.0.1.2-4X11 miscellaneous 'fixes' extensio ii libxft2 2.1.8.2-8 FreeType-based font drawing librar ii libxi61:1.0.0-5 X11 Input extension library ii libxinerama1 1:1.0.1-4 X11 Xinerama extension library ii libxp61:1.0.0.xsf1-1 X Printing Extension (Xprint) clie ii libxrandr22:1.1.0.2-4X11 RandR extension library ii libxrender1 1:0.9.0.2-4X Rendering Extension client libra ii libxt61:1.0.0-5 X11 toolkit intrinsics library ii psmisc22.3-1 Utilities that use the proc filesy ii zlib1g1:1.2.3-13 compression library - runtime firefox recommends no packages. -- no debconf information -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#382474: I had the same problem, now I have an other one
Moritz Winterberg schrieb am 05.09.2006 18:24: Well, actually I wasn't using the Sarge package before. I already had other problems with that one so I was already using a backported capi4hylafax_01.03.00-2 Version which as I said had no big Problems beside the one with faxrecvd script call discussed here. I never got those Discrepance Errors before though. It only started to appear after upgrading from 01.03.00-2 to 01.03.00.99.svn.300-3 ?? Now I checked and found out it seems to happen only when the call is speech instead of fax. When I call the Faxmachine from my mobil, I will hear the Faxtones from the Server and then the error will occur exactly when hanging up on my mobil. So I think it does not realy affect productivity as it seems. Its just little annoying because it always will dump the error to STDERR and syslog Moritz I am still using 01.03.00.99.svn.300-3, version 25 Aug 2006, and never excpected such errors in capi4hylafaxlog or syslog. Not with 3.1kHz audio or speech calls. Everything works fine here. BTW: Lionel, what's about version 01.02.03-10sarge2 ? Is bug# 382474 fixed in this version? Bug#386165: mouse button/wheel does not prevent xscreensaver from activating
Package: xscreensaver Version: 4.24-5 Severity: normal Hi, When I do not touch the keyboard and do not move the mouse, I can press mouse buttons or roll its wheel without preventing xscreensaver from activating. And once activated, xscreensaver exits as soon as I touch the wheel or any mouse button again. So it looks like mouse button/wheel events are not taken in account when checking whether the activation timeout has expired, while they are taken in account when checking whether the screensaver must be disabled because the user touched the mouse/keyboard. Buttons are not important since you often mouse the mouse before clicking. But, the wheel is often used without moving the mouse, especially when reading long documents. It is a little boring to have the screensaver activating there just because you only rolled the mouse without moving it. Bug#385937: Please improve the long description
How about the following: Description: A userspace driver for Mellanox InfiniBand HCAs libmthca is a device-specific driver for Mellanox InfiniBand host channel adapters (HCAs) for the libibverbs library. This allows userspace processes to access Mellanox HCA hardware directly with low latency and low overhead. . This package contains the loadable plug-in. . Homepage: http://www.openfabrics.org/ I don't think that the libmthca description is the right place to try and define InfiniBand, but I also updated the libibverbs description to the following: Description: A library for direct userspace use of InfiniBand libibverbs is a library that allows userspace processes to use InfiniBand verbs as described in the InfiniBand Architecture Specification. InfiniBand is a high-throughput, low-latency networking technology. InfiniBand host channel adapters (HCAs) commonly support direct hardware access from userspace (kernel bypass), and libibverbs supports this when available. . For this library to be useful, a device-specific plug-in module should also be installed. . This package contains the shared library. . Homepage: http://www.openfabrics.org/ What do you think? (if it's the case, it's possible that the rc file is incompatible between the two versions) I've had this problem for a while, probably a few months, I thought it was some temporary problem so I waited to see if it would fix itself after an upgrade. :-) --- .sane.bug/xsane/xsane.rc2006-09-05 06:00:55.0 +0200 +++ .sane/xsane/xsane.rc2006-09-05 05:52:42.0 +0200 @@ -5,7 +5,7 @@ tmp-path /tmp/ working-directory -/d/local/home/jh +/home/jh filename out.pnm filetype @@ -27,7 +27,7 @@ fax-fine-option -m fax-viewer -gv +ghostscript fax-width 14136115 fax-height @@ -41,11 +41,11 @@ fax-ps-flatdecoded 1 e-mail-from -[EMAIL PROTECTED] + e-mail-reply-to e-mail-smtp-server -localhost + e-mail-smtp-port 25 e-mail-authentication @@ -59,7 +59,7 @@ e-mail-pop3-port 110 e-mail-project -kalle +emailproject e-mail-filetype .png multipage-project @@ -117,11 +117,11 @@ tool-tips 1 show-histogram -1 +0 show-gamma 1 show-batch-scan -1 +0 show-standard-options 0 show-advanced-options @@ -185,9 +185,9 @@ auto-correct-colors 1 gtk-update-policy -0 +1 medium-nr -13 +0 paper-orientation 0 preset-area-definitions @@ -197,7 +197,7 @@ printerdefinitions 1 printer-name -hemma +new printer printer-command lpr printer-copy-number-option @@ -205,9 +205,9 @@ printer-lineart-resolution 300 printer-grayscale-resolution -300 +150 printer-color-resolution -300 +150 printer-width 13316915 printer-height @@ -225,7 +225,7 @@ printer-gamma-blue 65536 printer-ps-flatdecoded -0 +1 preset-area-name DIN A3 port. preset-area-xoffset
Bug#386166: lyx-qt: Dialogs (crossref + citation) are slow to open in 1.4.2
Package: lyx-qt Version: 1.4.2-4 Severity: normal I am using lyx-qt 1.4.2 to edit my thesis (960 Kb) and dialogs to insert/edit cross references take about 5s to open and dialogs to insert/edit citations take about 2s to open. This was not certainly the case when I used lyx-qt 1.3.x and also for 1.4.1 I think (while not sure for the 1.4.1 because I used it only during a short time) My CPU is a P4 at 1.7 GHz. The lyx-qt process uses 100% of the CPU during the dialog startup. Working with smaller documents (like articles for example) does not take a mensurable time, so it seems to be parsing the document contents during the delay to open the dialogs. Bug#386167: evolution-exchange: Can't see mail messages that are available on the server
Package: evolution-exchange Version: 2.6.3-1 Severity: important I can see that there are messages available on the Exchange server, by looking at it via OWA in a browser. Also, in the side bar I see Inbox (2) if for example there are two unread messages available on the server (after clicking on (Send/Receive). But the new messages are not available in the list of message headers. If I quit evo and restart it, the messages appear in list of headers. The problem is intermittent though frequent, and has started in the last month or so. The few machines that still have those HDDs have the latest Sarge 2.6.8-3 kernel, acpid, DMA disabled, drive power management disabled (through hdparm). To be honest though, we have swapped out the HDDs on most of them for Compact Flash cards and those machines they have been rock solid since. I believe I originally discovered the problem using debsums. I'm not sure what tool generated the output pasted into the report. A likely cause seems to be maintainer scripts attempting to remove a depending package's doc dir and replace it with a symlink to a dependant package's dir, but I don't know the details or history of your package. Don't put anything system specific into the docs. It's also possible, that one day this patch will be dropped, because of a better solution or any issues and then upstream docs may be outdated (and wrong) then. So I really don't think it's a good idea to put this into upstream docs. And my point is that if it's not put into the upstream docs (and believe me, I'm not disagreeing that is shouldn't be), then it the patch should be dropped from Debian. You otherwise will have users who have no idea where the default value is coming from. I could simply add a note [1] to the xsl:message, where you (upstream) output, which format is used (fo/docbook.xsl - root.messages). IMHO this is enough to make users aware of this little workaround. [1] E.g.: See /usr/share/doc/docbook-xsl/README.Debian for more information. Hi I have now tried to build the package manually to be able to reproduce the problem and track it down better. However I fail to do so now. This probably mean that the build failure is the program segmentation fault, of which I do not even know what program that is. Bug#386184: python-dev: Adding default symbolic links for library paths, include paths, and libraries.
Package: python-dev Version: 2.3.5-2 Severity: wishlist Hi. I have an application that I am compiling against Python development files (it uses Boost Python). The build system uses include path usr/include/python2.3, libpath /usr/lib/python2.3/config, and shared library /usr/lib/libpython2.3.so since default versions are not available. This has the consequence that when python-dev is installed (for example on etch) this will fail to compile, since only 2.4 files are installed (since the default Python in etch is now 2.4). I was wondering therefore if it made sense to have generic /usr/include/python, /usr/lib/python/config, /usr/lib/libpython.so symlinks. If you feel it does not, feel free to close this bug report. Bug#386187: simultaneous win and loss results in both
Package: singularity Version: 0.22-1 When I completed the game, it went through the win dialogs, but then it informed me my moon base had been discovered. That put me over 100%, which meant I was discovered, so I lost. After informing me I had won. I am not completely certain the win and loss were exactly simultaneous, because I had speed set to maximum, but the win script did run first. Being told I had finally won, and then being told it was too late, was ironic to say the least. Bug#385722: please consider splitting off sysvutils
tags 385722 - pending thanks [Petter Reinholdtsen] I've tested this package split with debootstrap, and it had no problem handling it. Because of this, I've commited the change to svn to have it included in the next upload. I did some more testing, trying to upgrade the package using 'dpkg -i', and ran into serious problems. It refuses to upgrade because sysvinit pre-depend on sysvutils, which include a file already in the old/existing sysvinit. I suspect the pre-depend is the problem. I am not sure exacly how to fix this, and am removing the patch from svn while we look into this issue a bit more. To follow up some more, I have a few suggestions for things that could be done to help resolve the problems I encountered: - mondoarchive should check if filesystems are read-only before trying to use them for scratch or temp - mondoarchive should exclude afs filesystems when option -N is used - mondoarchive should exclude paths from the find command (Making catalog of files to be backed up) if the path has been excluded with the -E option - mondoarchive should prefer /tmp and/or /var/tmp over other paths for temp and scratch (if there is enough space) - maybe even prompt the user if insufficient space is available in /tmp or /var/tmp - mondoarchive should try to avoid network filesystems for temp and scratch (give preference to local filesystems if there is enough space) -Kevin -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Somehow it seems that rlength in do_match() gets a bad value inside the MSB_SUPPORT code ... without really understanding what is going on, it seems that the following patch seems to address the special case mentioned previously. Bug#386193: replicator: Replicator works on etch amd64
Package: replicator Version: 3.1-sarge-1.6 Severity: wishlist In despite of reporting on a i386 machine, I am pleasure to inform you I was able to run replicator on an amd64 machine running etch. A few fixes should be applied though. I downloaded the i386 version from etch and installed on amd64 by forcing the architeture. Besides the fixes on the previous reports (tar) I had to install deboostrap in order to have devices.tar.gz. I've changed repli-common and repli-install to accept amd64 (replacing i386) and that is it. The client was also a amd64 and I select etch on /etc/replicator.conf. I am a C guy and I do not know perl enough to put amd or i386 on the files, that is why I am not sending a patch. Bug#383690: Latest update breaks ntp
Hi Daniel, Here's a strange one! I assume a bug-report is appropriate, and I'll make one, but I'll need your help in figuring out which package to report it against... I have a machine (darkstar) running etch, which I use for testing debian installer things. I did an aptitude update ; aptitude upgrade before leaving for the 3-day weekend. When I returned today, Tuesday, I tried to do the same thing, to pick up any changes that happened over the weekend. The Tuesday aptitude upgrade told me that a whole bunch of packages were being kept back (as well as the usual flock that wanted to be upgraded; etch is testing after all). I aborted to think about things. After thinking, I allowed it to proceed and it updated what it could. But it still had a bunch of packages being kept back. I tried aptitude dist-upgrade just to see what it would propose, but aborted before letting it have its way, because it wanted to delete a bunch of stuff that looked like I wouldn't be happy if they were deleted. It claimed a number of things were broken as well. I managed to save all of this in a typescript, which is attached. I'll leave the machine unchanged for a while, if you want me to run any tests or retrieve any log files. Any advice on where to send the bug-report will be appreciated! Thanks! Bug#386192: Set LANG to and whatever.UTF-8 in /etc/environment
Package: fai-doc Version: 2.10.5 Severity: wishlist AFAIK debian is commited to switch to UTF-8 encoding. So would be nice to have for FAIBASE from example/simple an /etc/environment file that set's LANG=foo_BAR.UTF-8 LANGUAGE=foo additionaly to PATH. UTF-8 is a must have in multi language environments. Helping new installation to get it right from scratch when they start with the example/simple setup would therefore be a win. Achim -- To me vi is Zen. To use vi is to practice zen. Bug#385525: FTBFS with GCC 4.2: uses removed minimum/maximum operator
There is no more upstream for this package that is used by gatos, a tv player for old ATI All in wonder video boards. I don't own this kind of board now. Bug#386200: rails: script/console fails, need /usr/bin/irb
Julien Delange wrote: In fact, I installed rails. In the directory created by rails a script called scripts/console is useful to debug the program through irb. But it fails : Hi Julien, Yes, it you need irb for console. That's why rails Recommends irb. Recommends: irb ( 1.8) Aptitude and dselect should automatically install these, but it is not required as you can run your application without it. - Adam PS. irb is the interactive ruby and it is very useful for development. I use it all the time by just typing `irb`. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Bug#383870: fetchmail: Fetchmail duplicates my SPAM every 10 minutes - ARGH!
Matthias Andree wrote: -BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 Helge Hafting wrote: Still, rejecting on TO address is tricky, mailing list mail is usually not addressed to me. Unfortunately, you haven't shown your configuration file yet. I suspect you're using a wildcarded multidrop configuration. Still, it'd be nice if fetchmail would delete successfully delivered messages when exim goes sour. That would at least avoid message multiplication, although I would probably not get any mail through if all the x first messages are bad. That'd be a exim problem though, not a fetchmail fault. Looks like I solved the problem by making exim accept 100 bad messages instead of just 4 before giving up. Still a DOS waiting to happen. Bug#386204: Please consider enabling the Speex audio codec
Package: vlc Version: 0.8.6-svn20060823.debian-3 Severity: wishlist Debian's vlc has no Speex support compiled in which is a pity, considering that Speex is a really-free audio codec and used by free software people in combination with Theora.
